Why You Need Natural Fiber Sleepwear for Your Baby

by Christine Swearingen Leave a Comment

You want the best for your baby, and natural fiber materials are the best. The ergoPouch cocoon swaddle and pajamas are made from organic cotton and bamboo fibers. Below are three reasons why you need to purchase this natural fiber sleepwear for your baby.

  • Natural fibers are better for the skin

Eczema is a common skin condition among babies. It appears as red, crusty patches that are itchy and sore. Synthetic fibers like polyester can irritate the skin and cause an eczema flare up for your baby. Natural fibers like cotton, however, make it easier for the skin to breathe and also help regulate body temperature which helps reduce eczema flare ups. Not to mention, organic cotton materials mean no toxic chemicals sit against a child’s skin.

  • Natural fibers are more breathable

Breathable fabric is more comfortable and much more enjoyable to wear. It reduces sweating and will help prevent your baby from overheating, especially in the warmer spring months. Your baby may love to be swaddled, but if the material is too heavy the wrap will be too warm. Go with a lighter option like the 0.2 TOG or 1.0 TOG ergoPouch cocoon swaddle to keep your baby comfortable and contained during Spring and Summer.

  • Organic cotton is planet-friendly

Not only do you want what is best for your baby right now, you also want to think about your child’s future. Supporting organic products promotes a clean environment and sustainable practices for a healthier world. Organic materials are known for using less water, creating fewer toxins, and improving soil quality. All of these features help create a brighter future for your child to live in.

Sleep Regressions at All Ages — What to Do When Sleep Stops

by Christine Swearingen Leave a Comment

Thank you to Kim West “The Sleep Lady” for sharing this guest post with Gugu Guru.

You have followed all the steps, and maybe done the Shuffle for a week here and there. You have a baby who sleeps well. Then it happens. The dreaded sleep regression. Common at many ages and for many reasons, sleep regression is the single most popular baby sleep topic at Sleeplady.com. We have put together a handy list of articles with great advice about sleep regressions at all ages. If you’re struggling with a sudden setback, scroll through for an article that is age-appropriate now. If things are going well, bookmark this page for later — there’s bound to be a moment in the future where you need a little extra help getting back your restful nights. Find out:

  • What’s a sleep regression?
  • When will it end?
  • Sleep regressions at all ages

SLEEP REGRESSIONS AT ALL AGES: JUST A PHASE?

We’ve all been there. Baby has been peacefully sleeping through the night, and, consequently, so is everyone else. Hooray! And then, out of the blue, your sweet baby is up at all hours, wanting to be soothed, fed, and crying. What happened? Many refer to these short episodes as a Sleep Regression.

Want to read more about sleep regressions?
Read: Sleep Regressions — What Are They, and When Will They End?

WHEN WILL MY BABY’S SLEEP REGRESSION END?

If you’re asking yourself this question, chances are that you’ve been short on sleep, and so has your very cranky, sleep-fighting baby. Sleep regressions at all ages are difficult, but thankfully most children (not all, but most) don’t experience every sleep regression. If they did, no one would sleep during the first two years!

4 MONTH SLEEP REGRESSION

You’ve got the schedule down. Baby is FINALLY sleeping more… and then, WHAM! Suddenly she’s not. Welcome to what is commonly referred to as the 4 month sleep regression. Some may refer to this phase as increased wakefulness, but it all amounts to the same thing — you and baby have newly found your groove, and now baby just isn’t acting like herself.

Here’s some more about the 4 month sleep regression:

PRE-TODDLER SLEEP REGRESSION

I’m not going to claim that all babies experience a sleep regression (or two), but most do. And if there is one sleep regression period that seems to be abundantly common, it’s when babies learn to crawl and/or pull themselves to a standing position. This is a huge step in their gross motor development, and opens an entirely unexplored world. Of course they don’t want to sleep, and therefore, parents experience some very common baby sleep problems.

The pre-toddler sleep regression happens somewhere around 9 months-old.
Read: The 9 Month Sleep Regression — When Your Baby Stops Sleeping

THE 18 MONTH SLEEP REGRESSION

You were sleeping peacefully…and then you hear your toddler. He’s not just rustling around resettling. He’s screaming mad. Literally. As you drag yourself out of bed, you wonder to yourself what’s wrong? What could be causing your toddler sleep problems? Could this be two-year molars? An ear infection? Is he gassy from eating too much broccoli at dinner? Is his newfound walking (or running!) causing this?

The answer: It could truly be any of the above. But it could also be yet another sleep regression.

Are you dealing with the 18-month sleep regression?
Read: 18 Month Sleep Regression: How To Get Your Toddler Back To Sleep

Periods of interrupted sleep are common. Breathe and read up on how you can soothe your child to get through sleep regressions at all ages.

THE 2-YEAR SLEEP REGRESSION

Many parents breathe a sigh of relief once their child hits the toddler years. But then you’re dealing with molars, budding independence, and (for some) potty training. Logically, we think that development keeps moving forward, but when it comes to two-year-olds, you’ll notice that there’s a bit of backsliding as they learn new skills and grow up a bit, which includes the potential for another sleep regression.

Wondering about the 2 year sleep regression?
Read: The 2-Year Sleep Regression – How to Get Your Child Back to Sleep

Whether you have an infant who has suddenly gone back to waking every two hours, or a toddler who is frequently up at night, sleep is on the horizon. Once you hit the six-month mark, consistent gentle coaching can help you get on a schedule that works for the whole family.

SLEEP REGRESSIONS AT ALL AGES? USE THE SHUFFLE!

If you have already mastered The Shuffle, you can return to a shortened version to get back on track. If you haven’t done any sleep coaching, and would now like to address your child’s sleep, consider using The Shuffle after the regression. You can find help at The Sleep Lady through books, our courses, or a Certified Gentle Sleep coach online or near you.

Must-Have Sleep Essential: Kyte BABY Sleep Bags and Pajamas

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

It’s no secret that when babies and kids sleep well, the whole family sleeps well! As any working parent knows, it’s essential to have the right items to help your little ones sleep safely and soundly, as nothing is more important than healthy sleep habits for the family. Founded by a mom, Kyte BABY has thought of everything babies and kids need to sleep comfortably and safely. Read on to see why Kyte BABY is a much-loved sleep essential for so many busy families.

If you’re looking for the ideal baby clothing essential, especially for sleep time, look no further than the Kyte BABY Zippered Footies! The Zippered Footies are the perfect pajama, as they feature a dual zipper option that make wardrobe or middle of the night diaper changes a breeze. Made from the silky smooth bamboo rayon Kyte BABY is known for, these Zippered Footies are cool on baby’s skin and the stretchy material gives you the option to have a snug or looser fit while still staying comfortable and stylish.

kyte baby zippered footies

The Kyte BABY Zippered Footies come in a huge variety of colors, making them a perfect baby shower gift. Also, for those babies starting to walk they now have grips starting on sizes 6-12 months, so baby can wear this easy to wash and wear outfit all day long – for play, sleep, and everything in between! Check out the Kyte BABY toddler pajamas so baby can match with their siblings, too.

Kyte Sleep Bags

If you find your baby is having trouble settling down to sleep, we suggest you check out the Kyte BABY sleep bag. Many parents have reported that it helps their baby sleep through the night, and since it’s the safest alternative to a blanket in bed, it helps reduce the risk of SIDS too. That’s probably why the Kyte BABY sleep bag was voted the No. 1 Wearable Blanket by The Bump (2019). Their sleep bag is made of 97% rayon of bamboo, so it feels buttery soft and breathable. And, most importantly, it is easy to wash and features a J-shaped double zipper, which makes those middle-of-the-night diaper changes a breeze.

One of the reasons we love Kyte BABY so much is that they offer a plethora of options, not only for colors, but for warmth level, as well. TOG is a rating system that measures warmth and calculates how quickly a fabric uses heat. It is the standard when choosing the appropriate sleeping bag for your baby depending on the ambient temperature in their nursery.

Kyte baby sleep bag

At 1.0 TOG, it’s the ideal warmth year-round. However, Kyte BABY recommends a thicker tog during cooler months and a thinner size during warmer months. The Kyte BABY sleep bags help create positive sleep associations for baby so your baby can fall asleep and stay asleep easier, longer, and safer. They are incredibly soft and breathable while also available in 3 warmth or TOG options, so no matter your nursery temperature or climate your baby can sleep at the perfect level of warmth and layers for a safe and comfortable sleep environment. You can learn more about Kyte BABY on their website, Instagram, or Facebook.

When the Clock Falls Back…

by Christine Swearingen Leave a Comment

On Sunday, Nov 1st, we fall back an hour. It’s my favorite night of the year, NOT! Just when sleep is perfect, you feel like it’s all about to fall apart. Fear not – I promise it feels scarier than it is. It may be a few early mornings, but your child will quickly adjust. Here are my tips for success:

There are two routes you can take with Daylight Saving Time, and which way you choose is dependent on how flexible a sleeper your child is.

  1. You can decide to start preparing your child now for the time change by pushing your child’s bedtime 15 min later every couple of days. This also means pushing the morning wake-up time 15 min later and nap(s). For example, If your child has a 7:30 pm bedtime and typically wakes up around 6:30 am, put him or her to bed at 7:45 pm and do not start the next day until at least 6:45 am. Slowly push to an 8:00 pm bedtime for a couple of days, then 8:15 pm, until you reach 8:30 pm by next Saturday, Nov 2nd, when that 8:30 pm becomes 7:30 pm. Remember, as you are pushing bedtime, you are pushing the morning wake-up and nap schedule.
  2. If the plan above sounds like too much work, I recommend putting your child to bed at his or her regular bedtime next Saturday and expecting an early wake-up. You can get your child whenever they wake up. Then, push the first nap of the day to match the new time and do bedtime on Sunday night at the regular time. Starting Monday morning, delay your response to your child by 15 minutes each day for four days until you hit their regular wake up time (before the time change). Also, sync up mealtimes with the new time, as that will help their body quickly adjust to the new time. Be sure to spend a lot of time outside, as sunlight will also help their body adjust.

Personally, I prefer the second route. It requires less thinking. And it’s almost like pretending nothing ever happened, which makes it all feel like less of a big deal! I also typically find that older children do better with the second route as well.

If your child has a toddler clock, start adjusting it on Monday morning by 15 minutes each morning until you have hit their regular wake up time (before the time change). I promise they will adjust quicker than you think!

Thank you to Mahaley Patel for sharing this post with us!

The Dreamegg White Noise Machine

by Christine Swearingen Leave a Comment

With people spending more time at home than ever, “cabin fever” has taken on new meaning. Around the world, surveys have revealed that watching TV, cooking, and following the news have become the new favorite hobbies of suddenly home-bound citizens.

Of course, while the pandemic may have resulted in some major lifestyle shifts, it’s also brought about a widely welcomed opportunity to slow down and spend more time with those closest. The problem? Parents, especially moms, are in more desperate need than ever for alone time and adult time.

Making Quiet Time Happen

With going out being even less of an option than before, parents are finding new ways to get much-needed “me time” without risking exposure. From yoga and meditation to just getting creative in finding new at-home hobbies and spaces, moms and dads alike are finding ways to get their alone time and adult time without leaving the house.

Still, with tensions at an all-time high from stressing over work, school, and everything in between, how do you get away without going anywhere? That’s the question both seasoned and new parents have been working to find the answer to — and the Dreamegg White Noise Machine has been the solution for many.

What Is The Dreamegg White Noise Machine?

Capable of producing 11 soothing sounds, including white noise, lullabies, ocean waves, and more, the Dreamegg White Noise Machine is a compact quiet time creator used by parents and newborns alike.

For those with young children, the Dreamegg White Noise Machine can be placed in the child’s nursery or bedroom to help soothe them to sleep, serenading them into dreamland so that parents can get their much-needed relaxation time in.

For parents themselves, the Dreamegg can be used in a similar fashion. Just place it in your bedroom and let the bumps, giggles, and other sounds of children in the house disappear as you glide off into dreamland yourself. It’s also great for blocking out traffic and city noises for those who find themselves in urban or suburban areas.

How The Dreamegg Is Different

Designed to help children go to sleep faster and stay asleep soundly, the Dreamegg is small, compact, and highly-portable. Beyond that, it has key features that make it better than the average white noise machine — including a warm night light and timer so that you can start teaching a nighttime routine with ease.

That’s what makes the Dreamegg one of the key baby essentials and the perfect idea if you’re seeking pregnancy gifts or baby shower gifts to check off a box on a new mom’s “nursery essentials” list! You can save $5 off on Amazon when you use the Dreamegg coupon!

Expecting Multiples? Our Top Must-Haves

by Abby Ludwig Leave a Comment

I was extremely shocked when I heard that I was expecting my second set of twins. My identical boys were 2 and a half years old and while I knew they would be the best big brothers, I couldn’t believe I was going through this again! As Gugu Guru’s Director of Concierge, my mind immediately went to the products and gear that I would need for our second set (this time, boy/girl twins) who were going to be born in a completely different season than their older bros. Below is my latest list of must-have products for parents of multiples.

Newborn/4th Trimester Must-Haves

Frida Mom Products: When I had my first set of twins, I had heard so much about this Nose Frida and how wonderful it was. Quickly, I converted to their whole lineup of items and was so excited when they launched their ‘Mom’ line. I am a HUGE fan of their Upside Down Peri bottle and their Disposable Underwear were extremely comfortable, especially after my C-Section.

Belli Skincare: When you have multiples, you don’t always have time for a long skincare routine. Generally, I need to slap on some lotion, rub on sunscreen and I’m out the door! I love Belli’s tinted sunscreen as well as their Stretchmark Minimizing Cream, which helped greatly as I grew.

Simple Clothing: This sounds so silly, but it’s also so practical. Find clothing that holds up to lots of washing, is a style you like, and is easy to put on. With double the diaper changes, zippers or magnetic closures are a must! Some of my favorite brands are Magnetic Me, Little Sleepies, and Monica + Andy.

Love to Dream Swaddles: These have continued to be a favorite for our family. They are so easy to put on and great for midnight diaper changes. They wash easily (important when you’re wearing them twice as fast) and allow your little one to have his or her hands up. Now that my little ones are 3 months old, we’re slowly transitioning to their Swaddle Up Transition Bags.

Twiniversity: Twiniversity strikes again! They continue to be my favorite resource to share with twin parents. The site is full of great blog posts written by twin parents on that multiple mentality! Also, their founder, Nat has written the best book for expectant twin parents – What to Do When You’re Having Two.

Feeding Must-Haves

Easy to Use Bottles: When you have double the mouths to feed, it is important that you have bottles that you can assemble and clean as quickly as possible. I actually use a couple different types of bottles with my little ones, depending on our situation. When my babies are battling reflux, there is no better bottle than Dr. Brown’s Options Plus. They have an excellent venting system, are easy to clean, and are easy to assemble. I have also loved using the food-grade silicone bottles by Olábaby. These have minimal parts, are lightweight, and are also extremely easy to clean. Plus, they have accessories to work with your pump or turn into a sippy cup down the road.

Baby Brezza: From day 1, my twins were receiving a mix of formula and breastmilk. Feeding two babies is not easy, regardless of what you choose to feed. Both the Formula Pro-Advanced and the Formula Mixer Pitcher allowed me to quickly prepare bottles. Nothing better than efficiency when you have to listen to two screaming babes! Side note – they just launched a new diaper bag, as well, which was great for our road trip this summer!

Feeding Accessories: With two babies to take care of, the number of bottles we go through per day is truly fascinating. I have found that surrounding myself with proper accessories makes the cleaning process significantly easier. The Dr. Brown’s Dishwashing Basket, Boon Lawn Drying Rack (with fun extras), and an easy to use pump (like the Motif Luna or Elvie) have dramatically improved our daily feeding experience.

On The Go and Playtime Must-Haves

An Excellent Stroller: My #1 must-have for any parents of multiples is a good stroller! I would even argue that 2 strollers can potentially be a game changer for twins. I love keeping our Joovy Twin Roo + in the car for easy in/out access with our car seats. This is great for running errands, attending doctor’s appointments, and dropping off my older set of twins (when COVID doesn’t keep us at home) at activities.

The Bugaboo Donkey3 has also become our beloved all-terrain stroller. My babies – who are nearly 4 months old – still fit comfortably in the bassinets and my older boys love riding on the glider board to “help push” the babies. I can easily get 3 of my 4 kiddos on this stroller with no worries about lack of storage. It has a huge basket, great wheels, and an easy to fold up frame. I love that I can convert it to a single stroller when I need one (which is rare in our house!) and the side luggage basket is amazing. Plus, the bassinet frame becomes the seat frame, which gives us one less item to store. I always love multifunctional items for twins!

Infant Car Seats: When I am helping expectant parents figure out what car seat makes the most sense for their needs, I often focus on 3 things – weight, safety features/install, and price. Nuna has done an excellent job with their Pipa line creating car seats that are lightweight, have added safety features and are extremely easy to install. Their new relx car seat base is a game changer, allowing you to recline the seat within the base and having an even easier install than the intial base. One great thing to note – all Pipa seats will fit in the relx base (and the new rx seat comes with it)!

A Great Diaper Bag with Lots of Storage: I have tried out loads of diaper bags with my kiddos. I do think certain diaper bags are best for certain situations. Unfortunately, many of the ‘twin’ diaper bags fell short in my opinion, as they are just too big. I strongly believe that I will fill any diaper bag I use, no matter how big or small. To me, a diaper bag must have enough pockets (but not so many that they take up valuable inner space), great open storage, and easy to access bottle spots. If it’s a backpack, that’s just a plus! Baby K’tan recently launched their diaper bags and I am a huge fan! They are easy to wipe down, easy to fill, and have inner storage that makes sense.

A great playmat for 2 babies: As a mom of two sets of twins, I try to keep some sort of control on the amount of stuff in our house. I am not a minimalist, but I try to maintain a level of simplicity. One way I do this is by focusing on items that can function for both babies instead of one at a time.  The Lovevery play mat is a large playmat that will hold both babies for play, tummy time, and when I need to get tasks done around the house. It is extremely high-quality, easy to wash, and comes with excellent accessories that grow with your little one. I also love their Play Kits as well as Toys that provide all of my kiddos with age-appropriate developmentally based manipulatives.

Easy to Store Gear: Gear that is easy to store is essential with multiple babes. I love bouncers that fold flat, swings with small footprints and loungers that help with playtime. Check out some of my top choices by Baby Björn, 4moms, and Boppy.

An easy-to-use Carrier: I love wearing my babies. With 4 kiddos to take care of, it’s nice to have a hands-free way to hold one baby while tending to one of the others. Plus, it counts as tummy time anytime that little one is off of his/her back. I have tested out a number of carriers over the years and with my very short torso, I have a hard time finding a good fit. The Baby K’tan is great for the early days. I love the kangaroo carry and this helps keep my little ones snuggled close. The Boppy ComfyFit and ComfyChic carriers are super comfy and great from 8lbs on. They are easy to put on and are extremely adjustable and are great for wearing around the house or short walks around the neighborhood. I also love the Lascal m1 Carrier. Providing excellent ergonomic support for both parent and baby, this carrier is made of high-quality, breathable fabric and is great for all activities.

Nursery Must-Haves

Great Diaper Changing Products: I am a huge fan of all fragrance-free diapers. My littles all suffer from eczema so keeping parabens, fragrance, and dyes away is incredibly important to me. Some of my favorites are Eco Pea, Coterie, and Pampers Pure. Fragrance-free wipes are also so wonderful in those early days. Look for wipes that are 99% water initially. I love Water Wipes, Noleo, and Huggies Natural Care.

Crane Humidifier: My little ones always end up with a case of the sniffles right around 3 months. With a dry bedroom, I’m always looking for ways to moisten up the air. This will instantly help my little ones breathe and sleep, which means I get more shut-eye each night! Crane has the best line of cool mist humidifiers for your nursery and beyond! I keep one in each of my twins’ bedrooms every night!

Simple Swaddles: The Ollie Swaddle was great for us in the early days! This gave my little ones that tight swaddled feeling, ensuring longer stretches of safe sleep each night. I also love the swaddle blankets by Copper Pearl. They are buttery soft, stretchy, and a great size for long-term swaddling and beyond.

Great Crib Sheets: I am a HUGE fan of having loads of crib sheets for twinnies. There will inevitably be loads of messes in those cribs and the last thing you want to do is run out of clean sheets. I always have 4-5 sets for each baby on hand and my favorite sheets are by Carousel Designs. They have loads of organic options in fun patterns and you can even personalize your own bedding!

Bath/Teething Musts: My favorite hooded bath towels must be soft, cozy, and the right size for longterm use. I love the towels by Loulou Lollipop, which come as a set with a matching washcloth. They are adorable and so soft for that precious skin!
