When the Clock Falls Back…

On Sunday, Nov 1st, we fall back an hour. It’s my favorite night of the year, NOT! Just when sleep is perfect, you feel like it’s all about to fall apart. Fear not – I promise it feels scarier than it is. It may be a few early mornings, but your child will quickly adjust. Here are my tips for success:

There are two routes you can take with Daylight Saving Time, and which way you choose is dependent on how flexible a sleeper your child is.

You can decide to start preparing your child now for the time change by pushing your child’s bedtime 15 min later every couple of days. This also means pushing the morning wake-up time 15 min later and nap(s). For example, If your child has a 7:30 pm bedtime and typically wakes up around 6:30 am, put him or her to bed at 7:45 pm and do not start the next day until at least 6:45 am. Slowly push to an 8:00 pm bedtime for a couple of days, then 8:15 pm, until you reach 8:30 pm by next Saturday, Nov 2nd, when that 8:30 pm becomes 7:30 pm. Remember, as you are pushing bedtime, you are pushing the morning wake-up and nap schedule.
If the plan above sounds like too much work, I recommend putting your child to bed at his or her regular bedtime next Saturday and expecting an early wake-up. You can get your child whenever they wake up. Then, push the first nap of the day to match the new time and do bedtime on Sunday night at the regular time. Starting Monday morning, delay your response to your child by 15 minutes each day for four days until you hit their regular wake up time (before the time change). Also, sync up mealtimes with the new time, as that will help their body quickly adjust to the new time. Be sure to spend a lot of time outside, as sunlight will also help their body adjust.

Personally, I prefer the second route. It requires less thinking. And it’s almost like pretending nothing ever happened, which makes it all feel like less of a big deal! I also typically find that older children do better with the second route as well.

If your child has a toddler clock, start adjusting it on Monday morning by 15 minutes each morning until you have hit their regular wake up time (before the time change). I promise they will adjust quicker than you think!

I love the versatility of these diaper bags. The Sojourn is a perfect everyday bag. It has become my new go to! It is lightweight so even when weighed down with all of my toddler’s stuff, it still isn’t bulky. The tie dye print is AMAZING and I love that it’s washable so I don’t have to worry about it getting messy, no matter what we are out and about doing. It’s roomy and I have no doubt it will have plenty of space to still use when baby #2 arrives in a few weeks!

The Flex is awesome in that it can be carried over the shoulder or as a backpack. I like this one for longer trips, or overnight trips. As a busy mom with two young boys we also pack what I feel like is an abundance of things. I’ve used backpacks to literal small duffle bags to find what works best for us. I’ve found the Baby K’Tan mesh diaper bag as a great in between alternative.

After going through a few diaper bags with my now 4-year-old, I kinda knew what I wanted and what I didn’t want. This bag is great for my 4-year-old and 1 year old so that I can pack necessities. It also has 9 POCKETS!! You hear that moms…9, one of which is an insulated pocket for refrigerated snacks and bottles and another dedicated pocket for wipes! I love the removable wet bag, especially during the summer months to just throw the swimsuits in there when we are done for the day. I also used to carry a separate changing station and now I don’t have to do that because it has one on the backside of the bag. The best thing about all this is that it’s machine washable!!! I can just throw this baby in with the laundry and I’m done! I have to say that Baby K’Tan really listened to some moms and created a great all-in-one bag for many different lifestyles.

I am quite literally a mess. I love the idea of being organized and I do try but my efforts always fall short. I love the Baby K’tan Flex!! It allows me to maintain a bit of my sanity while toting around 2 toddlers (3 & 1). With just the right amount of pockets and compartments, I can carry around essentials and leave them in there for the next time we go out. There’s an interior side mesh pocket that would fit my tumbler perfectly but I throw 2 pouches and a spoon in there for easy feeding.

The bottom has a HUGE compartment for literally everything. I use it to store my kids water since they both like ice water. It really comes in handy on a hot day! I can fit about 4 bottles of water and 2 baby bottles comfortably. Other days, I keep snacks there.

Fortunately (for my wallet), my kids are at the ages where we don’t go thru 15 diapers a day so I just pack 3-4 of each size, along with an extra outfit and wipes and a diaper cream. There are a ton of pockets. I don’t use them much because I know if I do, I’ll lose everything (at least I’m honest with myself).

I love the Flex because it allows me to carry the right amount of stuff for my kids. My absolute favorite feature of this diaper bag is that it has a soft shell and is super lightweight! I like wearing it messenger style and it just conforms to my body. It’s so comfortable I forget I’m wearing it. Comfort has become key for me. I even use this as a diaper caddy at home! I’ve found so many ways to use this and make it work for my kids and I.

So in summation, this bag is totally worth it. It’s comfortable and fits a good amount of stuff for my kids with room for my wallet, phone and keys. The insulated bottom is discrete and when full, doesn’t make the bag appear overly clunky. It fits the perfect amount for a day out with kids.

Natalie Diaz – The Big Cheese, Twiniversity: “Plan to have child care start 1-2 weeks prior to your back to work start date to give yourself plenty of time to make a smooth transition back to the office. Go through your closet one month prior to going back to work to see what pieces still fit and what needs upgrading for your new, fabulous body.”

Elina Furman – Elfin Media: “With school closures, lack of routines, and zoom calls at odd hours, it’s so important for mothers to reshuffle the division of labor at home. While taking on the brunt of the invisible load left us frazzled and tired before the pandemic, an unequal division during these times is simply not sustainable.
