When the Clock Falls Back…

by Christine Swearingen Leave a Comment

On Sunday, Nov 1st, we fall back an hour. It’s my favorite night of the year, NOT! Just when sleep is perfect, you feel like it’s all about to fall apart. Fear not – I promise it feels scarier than it is. It may be a few early mornings, but your child will quickly adjust. Here are my tips for success:

There are two routes you can take with Daylight Saving Time, and which way you choose is dependent on how flexible a sleeper your child is.

  1. You can decide to start preparing your child now for the time change by pushing your child’s bedtime 15 min later every couple of days. This also means pushing the morning wake-up time 15 min later and nap(s). For example, If your child has a 7:30 pm bedtime and typically wakes up around 6:30 am, put him or her to bed at 7:45 pm and do not start the next day until at least 6:45 am. Slowly push to an 8:00 pm bedtime for a couple of days, then 8:15 pm, until you reach 8:30 pm by next Saturday, Nov 2nd, when that 8:30 pm becomes 7:30 pm. Remember, as you are pushing bedtime, you are pushing the morning wake-up and nap schedule.
  2. If the plan above sounds like too much work, I recommend putting your child to bed at his or her regular bedtime next Saturday and expecting an early wake-up. You can get your child whenever they wake up. Then, push the first nap of the day to match the new time and do bedtime on Sunday night at the regular time. Starting Monday morning, delay your response to your child by 15 minutes each day for four days until you hit their regular wake up time (before the time change). Also, sync up mealtimes with the new time, as that will help their body quickly adjust to the new time. Be sure to spend a lot of time outside, as sunlight will also help their body adjust.

Personally, I prefer the second route. It requires less thinking. And it’s almost like pretending nothing ever happened, which makes it all feel like less of a big deal! I also typically find that older children do better with the second route as well.

If your child has a toddler clock, start adjusting it on Monday morning by 15 minutes each morning until you have hit their regular wake up time (before the time change). I promise they will adjust quicker than you think!

The Dreamegg White Noise Machine

by Christine Swearingen Leave a Comment

With people spending more time at home than ever, “cabin fever” has taken on new meaning. Around the world, surveys have revealed that watching TV, cooking, and following the news have become the new favorite hobbies of suddenly home-bound citizens.

Of course, while the pandemic may have resulted in some major lifestyle shifts, it’s also brought about a widely welcomed opportunity to slow down and spend more time with those closest. The problem? Parents, especially moms, are in more desperate need than ever for alone time and adult time.

Making Quiet Time Happen

With going out being even less of an option than before, parents are finding new ways to get much-needed “me time” without risking exposure. From yoga and meditation to just getting creative in finding new at-home hobbies and spaces, moms and dads alike are finding ways to get their alone time and adult time without leaving the house.

Still, with tensions at an all-time high from stressing over work, school, and everything in between, how do you get away without going anywhere? That’s the question both seasoned and new parents have been working to find the answer to — and the Dreamegg White Noise Machine has been the solution for many.

What Is The Dreamegg White Noise Machine?

Capable of producing 11 soothing sounds, including white noise, lullabies, ocean waves, and more, the Dreamegg White Noise Machine is a compact quiet time creator used by parents and newborns alike.

For those with young children, the Dreamegg White Noise Machine can be placed in the child’s nursery or bedroom to help soothe them to sleep, serenading them into dreamland so that parents can get their much-needed relaxation time in.

For parents themselves, the Dreamegg can be used in a similar fashion. Just place it in your bedroom and let the bumps, giggles, and other sounds of children in the house disappear as you glide off into dreamland yourself. It’s also great for blocking out traffic and city noises for those who find themselves in urban or suburban areas.

How The Dreamegg Is Different

Designed to help children go to sleep faster and stay asleep soundly, the Dreamegg is small, compact, and highly-portable. Beyond that, it has key features that make it better than the average white noise machine — including a warm night light and timer so that you can start teaching a nighttime routine with ease.

That’s what makes the Dreamegg one of the key baby essentials and the perfect idea if you’re seeking pregnancy gifts or baby shower gifts to check off a box on a new mom’s “nursery essentials” list! You can save $5 off on Amazon when you use the Dreamegg coupon!

Thank you to Dreamegg for sponsoring this post.

Parker Baby Co. isn’t just another baby-centric brand. Founded by a husband and wife team, this small business has taken the market by storm, going up against the most expensive products from top name brands and offering affordable, high-quality, thoughtful products that every parent will love.

The company was founded by couple Kirsten and Sam who were quickly overwhelmed by all the baby products they were told they needed when they had twins in 2015. Ever since, they have strived to redesign these same products to make them multi-functional and fit for the modern family.

The couple now has four children to call their own, and throughout each experience of welcoming a new bundle of joy into their family, they’ve been able to try out new iterations of Parker Baby products and make notes about what they’d like to see added or changed first-hand.

Stamp My Feet: The Keepsake that Lasts

by Christine Swearingen Leave a Comment

We recently stumbled upon Stamp My Feet, a women-owned/grandma-owned business based in the Pacific NW. Stamp My Feet creates custom, beautiful, and stress-proof nursery keepsakes. We are pretty much obsessed with these kits. Just check out their Instagram feed and we know you’ll agree!

Stamp My Feet’s stamp kits contain a stylish gallery-wrapped canvas, letter and number stamps for personalization, and non-toxic ink. The canvases are erasable until sealed so you can get it just right, because wiggly baby feet and hands are inevitable. The kits even include a ribbon so you can hang your finished canvas on the nursery wall as soon as it’s dry!

Stamp My Feet says: Just ink your child’s hand or foot, stamp the canvas, and use the included stamps to personalize your little one’s name and birthdate. The stamps are clear so you can see exactly where you’re placing them. Easy-peasy, right? If you make a mistake or your baby wiggles and things get smudged, don’t stress, you can easily wipe off the entire print with a damp cloth or just touch it up with a cotton swab. It will be dry within 2-24 hours!

While Stamp My Feet kits are ideal for capturing a newborn’s footprints, they are also great for handprints at milestones like a first birthday or even the first day of kindergarten!  They are available in a variety of styles; so there’s a kit to suit any kind of event and every kind of décor, from minimalist to traditional.

This gift is especially perfect for any new or expectant parent. No guessing on size, gender, or wondering if they already have it — you’re all set! Order your kit here.

4 Moms Tell Us How These Diaper Bags are a Gamechanger

by Christine Swearingen Leave a Comment

Baby K’tan Diaper Bags

Baby K’tan is well-known and loved for comfortable wrap baby carriers. But, did you know they have two fantastic new diaper bags? Our village mamas had the chance to review these two bags and are sharing their feedback below. Check it out for yourself. If you love what you see, shop now!

The Flex Convertible Diaper Bag gives you the adaptability, practicality, and innovative design you need for ease. With features intentionally crafted to help you take everything you need anywhere you need to go, the Flex lets you and your little ones play, work, snack, and explore with flexibility and simplicity. It’s the bag you’ll rely on while they’re small, and love enough to keep carrying long after the diaper days are gone.

The Sojourn Backpack Diaper Bag lets you pack everything you need for a day trip with your little ones into one pack! Designed to keep your hands free and ready for adventure, the Sojourn includes all the features you love in larger bags, streamlined into an easy-access carry-all, perfect for travel, amusement parks, or wherever the day takes you.

Christine S. – Toddler girl – reviewing the Sojourn and Flex

I love the versatility of these diaper bags. The Sojourn is a perfect everyday bag. It has become my new go to! It is lightweight so even when weighed down with all of my toddler’s stuff, it still isn’t bulky. The tie dye print is AMAZING and I love that it’s washable so I don’t have to worry about it getting messy, no matter what we are out and about doing. It’s roomy and I have no doubt it will have plenty of space to still use when baby #2 arrives in a few weeks!

The Flex is awesome in that it can be carried over the shoulder or as a backpack. I like this one for longer trips, or overnight trips. It has lots of pockets and space and I like having the versatility of carrying style while away from home. Just like the Sojourn, it’s a lightweight material and doesn’t feel bulky even though it can hold all of the things!

Chelsea C. – Toddler boys – reviewing the Flex

As a busy mom with two young boys we also pack what I feel like is an abundance of things. I’ve used backpacks to literal small duffle bags to find what works best for us. I’ve found the Baby K’Tan mesh diaper bag as a great in between alternative.

It’s very versatile as it can be carried as a handbag, with the shoulder strap or the shoulder strap converts it into a backpack. It has many pockets for organizing and a great zippered bottom which provides cooler space. I really love the way it was designed, it’s been a perfect diaper bag for us.

Crystal B. – Toddler and baby – reviewing the Sojourn

After going through a few diaper bags with my now 4-year-old, I kinda knew what I wanted and what I didn’t want. I knew one of the things I absolutely hated was rummaging through the organized bag to find what I wanted, to then end up with a messy bag. This in turn made me really despise using a diaper bag when my son came along. Thankfully, we were quarantined so we didn’t have many places to go when my son was born!!

So what I love about this bag so much is that it has a zipper that allows me to FULLY UNZIP THE BAG!! I can open it and see everything that I packed. This bag is great for my 4-year-old and 1 year old so that I can pack necessities. It also has 9 POCKETS!! You hear that moms…9, one of which is an insulated pocket for refrigerated snacks and bottles and another dedicated pocket for wipes! I love the removable wet bag, especially during the summer months to just throw the swimsuits in there when we are done for the day. I also used to carry a separate changing station and now I don’t have to do that because it has one on the backside of the bag. The best thing about all this is that it’s machine washable!!! I can just throw this baby in with the laundry and I’m done! I have to say that Baby K’Tan really listened to some moms and created a great all-in-one bag for many different lifestyles.

Anais Z. – Toddler and Baby – reviewing the Flex

I am quite literally a mess. I love the idea of being organized and I do try but my efforts always fall short. I love the Baby K’tan Flex!! It allows me to maintain a bit of my sanity while toting around 2 toddlers (3 & 1). With just the right amount of pockets and compartments, I can carry around essentials and leave them in there for the next time we go out. There’s an interior side mesh pocket that would fit my tumbler perfectly but I throw 2 pouches and a spoon in there for easy feeding.

The bottom has a HUGE compartment for literally everything. I use it to store my kids water since they both like ice water. It really comes in handy on a hot day! I can fit about 4 bottles of water and 2 baby bottles comfortably. Other days, I keep snacks there.

Fortunately (for my wallet), my kids are at the ages where we don’t go thru 15 diapers a day so I just pack 3-4 of each size, along with an extra outfit and wipes and a diaper cream. There are a ton of pockets. I don’t use them much because I know if I do, I’ll lose everything (at least I’m honest with myself).

I love the Flex because it allows me to carry the right amount of stuff for my kids. My absolute favorite feature of this diaper bag is that it has a soft shell and is super lightweight! I like wearing it messenger style and it just conforms to my body. It’s so comfortable I forget I’m wearing it. Comfort has become key for me. I even use this as a diaper caddy at home! I’ve found so many ways to use this and make it work for my kids and I.

So in summation, this bag is totally worth it. It’s comfortable and fits a good amount of stuff for my kids with room for my wallet, phone and keys. The insulated bottom is discrete and when full, doesn’t make the bag appear overly clunky. It fits the perfect amount for a day out with kids.

Thank you to Baby K’tan for making this sponsored post possible.

Expert Advice for Working Mothers in 2020

by Christine Swearingen Leave a Comment

Being a working mom is a challenge. Being a working mom in 2020, in these unprecedented times, takes the challenge to a whole new level. We asked our experts for their top piece of advice for working mothers in 2020. Read what they have to say —

Julie Burt Nichols – The Wizard, Twiniversity: “If you’re breastfeeding, buy a micro-fridge for your office to store your pumped milk so you don’t have to keep it in the communal refrigerator. When shopping for a baby monitor, consider one that can be viewed over the internet through a private IP address so you can access the feed from the office.”

Natalie Diaz – The Big Cheese, Twiniversity: “Plan to have child care start 1-2 weeks prior to your back to work start date to give yourself plenty of time to make a smooth transition back to the office. Go through your closet one month prior to going back to work to see what pieces still fit and what needs upgrading for your new, fabulous body.”

Elina Furman – Elfin Media: “With school closures, lack of routines, and zoom calls at odd hours, it’s so important for mothers to reshuffle the division of labor at home. While taking on the brunt of the invisible load left us frazzled and tired before the pandemic, an unequal division during these times is simply not sustainable. Families need to create detailed lists of every household to do and divide accordingly. This is an excellent time to reframe and  equalize the household labor playing field, and women need to learn to delegate and give up perfectionism in the name of sanity.”

Jessica Hill – Founder, The Parent Collective: Invest in finding mom friends with kids the same age as yours.  While I realize this will take time you might not feel you have, we all need those people to enjoy and survive motherhood with – they keep you  company during the sometimes-monotonous early days with a baby and provide support as you juggle your work life balance (made harder now that many of us are home and attempting to do it all simultaneously).  Friends managing the same phases with kids will be able to relate to your joys and struggles in a way no one else will.

Kelly Mariotti – Executive Director, JPMA: Families are spending much more time at home and that will likely continue so be sure to check for safety hazards around the house that might be inviting to curious kids when you are multitasking and can’t be right with them.

Jada Shapiro – Maternal Health Expert and Founder, Boober: My advice to moms who are working, taking care of their babies, nursing and pumping (and for many right now at home doing all of this at once!) is to recognize that the struggle is real and that reaching out for help can make a huge difference in your mental health or in adjusting your feeding/pumping routines; sometimes a little expert advice and support is all it takes to start feeling better!

Lori Caden – Co-Founder and CEO, Proof: “Push back against perfectionism. There’s no way to be a perfect mother, but a million ways to be a good one.”

Tara Campbell Lussier – Founder, Arrow Birth: “Find your village. Working mothers can feel isolated and lonely juggling their numerous work/life responsibilities, especially in 2020. When you connect with people in a similar life season who inspire you to be the best version of yourself – wisdom, community, resources, and relief are abundant. They’re out there, so follow your own intuitive mothering instinct to find them.”
