The Village Reviews: Joeyband

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

The Joeyband is a revolutionary postpartum positioning band that helps secure a newborn to a parent’s chest. The Joeyband can be used to help prevent falls and keep baby close during skin-to-skin contact. Skin-to-skin contact is vital after birth and has been shown to improve overall infant development, breastfeeding, temperature regulation, and bonding. Our Village testers were able to try the Joeyband and provide us with their thoughts on this innovative band.

Joeyband

This Joeyband is great to bring along to the hospital for immediate skin-to-skin postpartum. It is easy to put on and really helps you feel more secure in holding your baby – especially when you’re fatigued after a long labor and/or still feeling the effects of anesthesia. We tried the Joeyband with our newborn and were impressed with how quickly it calmed him down! We even caught a few smiles in a row while our son was dozing. It was a good reminder to keep up the skin-to-skin time. The fabric feels a little bit like swimsuit material and is really stretchy, so both my husband and I could use the same size. My husband loved the Joeyband even more than I did – I think it helps him feel that special bond that a lot of mothers feel through the nursing relationship. I anticipate my husband will be using this product a lot before parental leave is over. I was happy to learn that there are even more uses for Joeyband as our little guy grows up. We have a plane trip next month and I’m going to use it to help keep our son more secure and calm as a lap child. Thanks to Gugu Guru for giving me the opportunity to test the Joeyband.

-Alyssa J.

Joeyband

The importance of skin to skin for newborns after they are born has long been established. But the benefits extend beyond just the hospital stay – it’s actually recommended for the first 3-4 months, or until the baby becomes to squirmy. And babies aren’t the only ones who benefit from skin to skin.

Skin to skin is often delayed after a c-section, due to the risk of infant falls. The Joeyband allows for immediate skin to skin for mom and baby because it reduces that risk. It keeps the baby safe and secure against mom’s chest so that this important bonding can start immediately. This way both mom and baby can reap the benefits of skin to skin during the repair and transport process.

The Joeyband can also be used for kangaroo care in the NICU, where skin to skin is critical for preemie babies. Sometimes it’s all a mom can do if the baby is too small or unable to breastfeed. It can also be used by dads! Since NICU babies are often hooked up to tubes and wires, the Joeyband helps prevent these from being disturbed. It’s appropriate for twins and micro-preemies, too. And in the event of an emergency, the babies can quickly be assessed because there are no hooks or buttons, just a few rows of Velcro.

I was fortunate to have a full-term baby with no complications but still found the Joeyband to be useful both in the hospital and even now that we are at home. It allowed me to maximize my skin to skin time in the hospital and aided in breastfeeding because it supported my baby without the need for a bulky pillow. This took some of the strain off my back and neck. When I wasn’t using it to hold my daughter, I used it as a belly band to support my newly postpartum belly.

The Joeyband is soft and comfortable to wear. I was able to put it on and take it off unassisted because it secures easily with Velcro. Once its in place, you hardly notice that it’s there. I definitely recommend the Joeyband for all new parents.

-Misty H.

Joeyband

The Joeyband has been such an essential part of my daily routine. I love using this when I need to have a free hand to work on something while sitting. It is so comfortable and easy to put on and remove.  The gentle squeeze it gives to baby while I’m wearing her gives her security while being skin to skin. Our bond has grown stronger while having the opportunity to stay so close more often through the day!

-Valerie T.

Joeyband

I enjoyed testing the Joeyband product, and as a mom who had a c-section, I can see the great benefit it provides.

My son has reflux so in addition to taking Zantac he also prefers to sleep upright on someone’s chest. The Joeyband helped me to be somewhat hands-free on the couch and allowed us to enjoy the baby snuggles. Overall a good product for what it was designed for!

-Katherine H.

Joeyband

I have been using the Joeyband for about two weeks. It was very easy to use and made skin-to-skin time with my little one much more enjoyable. It gave me the freedom to use my hands, especially during my meal times, which a lot of new moms know can be a challenge  🙂 The band is thick and stretchy and my little one enjoyed the swaddle-like feeling the band gave him as he would quickly fall asleep. I liked that I didn’t have to worry about him rolling or sliding off of me. The Joeyband is a great product and I would recommend it to any new mom!

-Taylor S.

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

As you all know, finding the right car seat and stroller can be a daunting task. With endless options in the marketplace, we decided to dig deep and we struck GOLD: Evenflo introduced app-enabled safety technology, trendy designs, top of the line guarantees and other smart features to their products in their new Evenflo Gold line— and as the name implies, this gear will be a total treasure, especially for digitally-savvy parents. Plus, scroll down for  a special discount code!

Evenflo Gold Line

There are five products to this line, but today we’re focusing on the EveryStage Car Seat and Pivot Xpand Stroller System today.

Evenflo Gold Line Everystage

Evenflo Gold Line: EveryStage Car Seat

We love this car seat because it’s an all-in-one, grow-with-your child ride, hence the name. At the heart of this car seat, is the innovative SensorSafeTM technology. Here’s how it works: You download the free SensorSafeTM app and buckle babe to activate SensorSafeTM. The app syncs with the chest clip and alerts you the moment an issue arises with the buckle, harness or babe’s temperature. This incredible technology lets you stay focused on the road and can help to alleviate a great deal of anxiety that can come with driving with little ones in the car.

Aside from the high-tech advancements, the rest of the design is equally impressive. In the EveryStage Car Seat, babe will love the plush, premium fabric and ergonomic, durable accents. And you will love the premium level of protection and performance that’s ready to grow with your kiddo—it can hold up to 120 pounds! It also features EasyClick Installation that makes your babe’s strap 3x tighter than competitors—the wiggle-free ride is a game-changer. Another item to note is the in-seat reclining feature when your baby is little and rear-facing provides additional head support which also helps to keep airways open.

Evenflo Gold Line Pivot Xpand

Evenflo Gold Line: Pivot Xpand Modular Travel System with SecureMax Smart Infant Car Seat

Evenflo Gold goes above and beyond the expected—and luckily for us parents, you can rock and stroll with the Pivot Xpand with ease. A few key points: You don’t need any additional parts or tools to convert it from a single to a double stroller, and it can be configured 22 ways to make sure the transition from infant to a 55-pound-kiddo (or two!) is safe and comfy during all stages of growth.

The system includes one toddler seat as well as the SecureMax Smart Infant Car Seat, which has the same incredible SensorSafeTM technology built-in to provide total peace of mind for parents.

Priced at $499, this modular stroller system is especially an awesome option for expectant or new parents who plan to have more children in the next couple years. With the Pivot Xpand stroller, you won’t have to worry about needing to purchase a double stroller down the road.

Evenflo’s dedication to safety, quality, innovation and accessibility puts them on our radar. And bonus: If they’re on yours, try out their Gold gear for 100 days and enjoy a lifetime warranty. Plus, their customer care team, ParentLink, will help you install your car seat with live video installation support! Use discount code GUGUGURU10 for 10% off your purchase.

The Village Reviews: Monti Kids Wooden Books

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Monti Kids makes at-home Montessori learning easy and impactful. Montessori learning involves a series of specially designed toys that address a child’s cognitive, physical, linguistic, social and emotional development. Reading is a vital part of Montessori learning and has been shown to improve language skills and provide benefits that last throughout a child’s entire education.

Our Gugu Village testers were able to try the Monti Kids Infant Preview and Wooden Book. They had access to Monti Kids Infant learning module, which was created to correspond with the Special Edition Wooden Fruit Book. Testers were able to glean useful tips and watch a video on fostering early literacy skills. Here’s what a few of our Gugu Villagers had to say about the Monti Kids Infant Preview and Wooden Book.

Monti Kids

This Monti Kids Wooden Book is perfect for infants! It’s so well-made, with easy to turn pages and simple photos of fruits. My son isn’t eating much yet but still really enjoys looking at the pictures as I teach him the fruit names. It’s also very easy for him to look at it on his own, as the design fosters independence. I can tell that the simplicity is appealing to him.
-Carrie M.
Monti Kids

At 11-months, my little one is just starting to take an interest in books so I was very excited to have the opportunity from Gugu Guru to try the Monti Kids fruit wooden book.

To be honest, I have always been interested in the concept of Montessori learning but with everything else we are trying to do as moms, I felt overwhelmed on how to immerse myself in the concepts and introduce it to my child. I LOVE that Monti Kids provides an easy to digest and quick video on how to best introduce the book to your child to make it fun and maximize learning.

With no words in the book I was pleasantly surprised at how much my child would engage with the imagery pointing to each fruit as we flipped through. Since we received it I have spotted my child seeking it out himself to flip through – which is a big win in my book (pun intended).

The simple and beautiful Monti Kids wooden book and the easily digestible educational videos are helping me win at parenting!
-April A.

Monti Kids

We had the pleasure of testing out this wooden book by Monti Kids. The book is very nice, well put together! He really enjoyed looking at it and didn’t pinch his fingers at all! The book is fun and simple. Easier to focus and learn about each fruit. The book is lightweight and easy for him to hold. A little tough for him to separate the pages but he is 7 months!
-Tiffany B.

Newborn Must Haves for Active Families

by Abby Ludwig Leave a Comment

Are you getting ready to welcome your little one? We were so thrilled to work with popular fitness influencer, Dasha Anderson (founder of Kettlebell Kickboxing) and her husband Dan as they prepared to welcome their first little lady! Fitness plays a big role in their household and we wanted to highlight that with our picks for this active couple. Below we teamed up with Dasha and Dan to look back on the past few months since welcoming Baby Ariana and highlight some of their favorite newborn essentials for active families.

Cybex Balios Stroller and Cybex Q Car Seat: Dasha has described this easy-to-use travel system as, “Sleek and comfortable! The car seat and stroller have been both hiking with me and strolling through New York City. The baby loves it and we feel stylish and secure in it. The safety features alone make this travel system a no brainer.” This travel system was an excellent choice for Dasha’s lifestyle both in and out of the city! Since Dasha lives just outside of NYC, weather can be a factor. We recommended she pair her stroller and car seat with the 7AM Enfant Poncho (great for the carrier or the stroller!) and Blanket 212 Evolution (also great for the stroller!) to help keep her little lady warm no matter what!

Joeyband

Joeyband by Sleepbelt: We love the Joeyband for new parents and Dasha’s family was no exception. When seated, the Joeyband offers hands-free support to baby, making those early days of skin-to-skin significantly easier. This was such an easy way to promote bonding between Dasha, her husband, and Baby Ari.

Fridababy Baby Basics Kit

Fridababy Baby Basics Kit: This kit is a must for any registry. The Nose Frida is now used in nearly every household with a newborn and the NailFrida makes nail clipping not so scary. The Cradle Cap brush will also help with those early baths. But the real must-have here is the Windi, which will help relieve baby’s gas in dire situations!

Diaper Dekor

Diaper Dekor: We loved this Diaper Pail for Dasha, because aesthetically it doesn’t scream “Dirty Diapers inside!” It does an excellent job keeping odors out of the room and comes in three sizes. It is completely hands-free, won’t dent or rust and can be converted to a regular trash can once you’re done with the diaper stage!

Love to Dream

Love to Dream Swaddle: Our favorite swaddles by Love to Dream allow baby to keep his/her hands up while still giving them that tight, womblike feeling. “Love to Dream Swaddles are the best because like most modern parents we spent some nights traveling to Grandmas or taking baby to our gym. The swaddle created a level of consistency no matter the crib or the setting!” These will help baby sleep well no matter where you are!

Belli Skincare

Belli Skincare Hello Glow Bundle: This bundle, which includes the Healthy Glow Facial Hydrator & Moisturizer and the Eye Brightening Cream is a favorite amongst our new moms. “Skin care is tricky when you have baby – you need the best products with the most natural ingredients. My skin was super dry and I had a hard time keeping up with my skin care routine. Belli made it easy! The consistency was great enough to have on all day and into night with no reapplication for a busy mom.”

4moms Breeze

4moms Breeze Playard: Having recently moved into a house and being a dog mom, Dasha needed somewhere that her little miss could play safely. “It is great to give your baby a safe and secure place in the home to move for tummy time or play time. It [also] really helps new moms actually run to the bathroom! Was anyone else scared to do this in the first few weeks?”

Baby K'tan Active

Baby K’tan Carrier: Since Dasha does so much work from home, we recommended the Baby K’tan carrier to use immediately after arriving home from the hospital. Also, we love the K’tan Active here for obvious reasons! “Baby K’tan was amazing for a working mom trying to get things done! It’s literally the only way I was able to type anything and the main reason I was caught up on my inbox. Plus the baby never felt like I was neglecting her.”

Crane Humidifier

Crane Humidifier: We love the Crane Humidifier for so many reasons! Dasha was due in February in New York, an extremely dry and cold time of year. To keep humidity up during the cold months, Dasha set up the Crane humidifier in the nursery. This is also super helpful when baby has his/her first cold, inevitable in the winter!

Stokke Tripp Trapp

Stokke Tripp Trapp w/ Newborn Seat: While it is an investment, this was Dasha’s top recommended product. “In all honesty, this was the BEST item on my list mainly because of the mileage we’ve put in this elegant chair. The newborn attachment allowed me to eat dinner, drink coffee, and answer email like a regular person – all while still being with my baby.”

Dasha is also the founder of Kettlebell Kickboxing and has created a series of fitness programs that are easy to complete at home with very little (or no!) equipment. Check them out today!

Add to Your Registry: Best Wi-Fi Baby Monitor, Evoz Vision

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Freedom—when you want it. That’s what a trustworthy baby monitor feels like. You can enjoy that precious block of time to the fullest, only checking in when your heart feels a tug, or when you get a cry alert. It is truly a game-changer when you can sip (or chug—no judgement ever) that glass of wine, loving a carefree moment.

With that said, we searched the marketplace for the best Wi-Fi baby monitor, and found everything we were looking for, and so much more, in the Evoz Vision. The high-tech features use the latest and greatest to keep you in the know of all things baby related.

Connected via your mobile device, you can vividly see your babe day or night with its HD wide-angle lens—it delivers a pristine image. And, the patented alert technology helps the baby monitor detect a cry versus another household noise. Once a cry is detected, the monitor will send you an SMS, email or push notification to fill you in on the latest happenings.

While you’re apart, you can connect with your babe using the audio features as well. You can play lullabies, music, audiobooks, virtually snuggle—24/7 from almost any location. If Grandma and Grandpa want a daily peek, the easy-to-control security system lets you invite family and friends into the camera action, while keeping web intruders out.

Plus, amazing bonus, the baby monitor kit also allows you to store data. So, you can track your babe’s feedings, sleep times and more with the app, and share it with your doctors when you need it. The record-keeping aspect is huge—especially during the newborn stage.

As you can see, the Evoz Vision is not your average Wi-Fi baby monitor. With the technologically advanced features and unique cry detector, you can have sweet dreams again (and not lie in bed with both ears on high alert). Since you matter too, we highly recommend this amazing Wi-Fi baby monitor.

Learn more by visiting Evoz today!

Do you love it as much as we do? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

5 Way to Enhance Your Baby’s Language

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

By Elise Duryea, NYS Licensed Speech Language Pathologist

If there’s one question that parents of babies and toddlers are constantly asking it’s, “What should I be doing to help my child talk?”  The simple answer, in a nutshell, is TALK…12,000-15,000 words per day.  Sounds like a lot, doesn’t it?   Here are some ways to sneak language into your every day activities:

  1. Talk and Narrate What You Are Doing

Use full sentences which include verbs and adjectives as you engage in your daily activities. The best times to do this include getting dressed and mealtime, but can include taking a walk, food shopping, or simply going about your typical routine.

  1. Sing

Use “baby talk” when talking to your baby, and sing songs and nursery rhymes with toddlers. They love hearing your voice, learn prosody, and will attend to the speaker when the pitch changes from normal conversational tone of voice to a sing-song voice.

  1. Read Books

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends reading books to babies from the time they are born.  Books are an amazing way to teach your child how to label, learn vocabulary, ask questions, and learn to problem solve.  As your child grows, let them identify items, fill-in the words you omit in the story, and make predictions about what may happen next.

  1. Explore Your Neighborhood

New venues are new opportunities for different language experiences. Each time you venture to a new place – the park, the grocery store, the post office – it’s an opportunity to introduce new vocabulary that your child may not be exposed to in your home.

  1. Be Present

Last, but certainly not least, is being present and in the moment with your child. When you are tuned in to what they are doing and saying, language and learning will happen naturally!

Self-Care for You with Matrescence Skin

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

When it comes to finding time for self-care as moms, it seems as there is not one free second in the day. This is why we highly recommend investing the time into a skincare routine, which is safe and luxurious for your skin. It’s no secret we’re huge fans of Matrescence Skin, for so many reasons, as it is safe for pregnancy and breastfeeding and made with high-quality ingredients to help your skin stay smooth, clear, and bright. Check out some self-care routines and tips from real moms who love Matrescence below. You can learn more about Matrescence in our self-care gift guide, black-owned business gift picks, and baby shower gift guide.

Matrescence Skin Care

Megan, mom of 3: Self-Care! I always thought I was horrible at it. Then I started watching my daily routine. I get up at 5:45am to shower alone and open a nice bottle of wine at 8pm. ? Not everyday, but this time in my life these are the things I do to take care of myself. One day I’ll add a manicure, facial, can you imagine a massage, etc. to the list. For now just getting to wash my face or showering without a kid standing beside me is HUGE. I’ve been using Matrescence since last fall. When I’m pregnant/nursing it’s so important for me to use a product that is safe for my skin and my baby. Unfortunately I feel like some products labeled as natural don’t work as well but Matrescence is safe and makes my skin really glow.

Matrescence Skin Care

Sophie, mom of 2: As a mother, self care should be as vital as the coffee you crave first thing. Loving + nurturing yourself is a chain reaction. I’ve learned to put very little time but much effort forth into carving out tiny routines to get it in! Happy full mother equals loving patient parent, wife, daughter, sister… after a very unsuccessful first postpartum experience, I lost myself giving every ounce I had to my baby. I was left years later depleted, exhausted and with a weak immune system. I didn’t have anything to give to anyone else I cared for and definitely not myself. This time round I was well aware of how dark it got and I prepared myself on how to deal with the lack of sleep, the insanity of two kids and trying to work. I make it a priority no matter how hard to find those tiny moments throughout the day to self care; five minutes of uninterrupted me time. This is in the form of my skin care routines, quick meditations in the car, sipping tea looking at the hawks nest in the tree, taking the dog around the block, making rice bowls with homemade dressings, soaking in the bath with candles and listening to podcasts. Once a month I pamper with a massage or facial or manicure. It’s just about pausing and taking a break from life to be present with yourself and listen to what your body needs.

Matrescence Skin Care

Jean, pregnant with first child: Almost half way there! Let’s talk about self care during pregnancy, or even motherhood. My second trimester has been smooth sailing so far, so my self care routine hasn’t changed much from before pregnancy (epsom salt baths, journaling, meditation, yoga). BUT. There is one thing I need to be way more mindful of throughout this journey to reduce my stress and not go insane. And that is blocking out all the outside noise and looking inward. For some reason, this is the time when people love to give unsolicited advice, and on top of that, there’s so much conflicting information out there about what’s good for the baby and not. Pregnancy is such a different experience for EVERY woman, so this is the time it’s become more important than ever for me to really listen to my body’s needs, and consult the midwives I’m working with who really know my health history and what I’m going through. And that means eating high quality runny yolks, and smoked salmon (because dang, this baby loves them), drinking my matcha every morning, and massaging myself with CBD oil every now and then to reduce my back pain.

Matrescence Skin Care

Shelly, mama to one with one on the way: Self-care is always a work in progress for me. As a physician, and a mother, I tend to put others needs first. I really struggled with this right after having Mason but have been more and more intentional about it. Sometimes, I forget that it doesn’t take much effort to sneak a little self-care in – and how helpful this tiny slice of time can be for my mood. Some of my favorite ways to practice self-care are: Take a walk outside, read a book, meditate for 10 minutes, take a bath, pamper my skin, turn on some music, declutter (yes – this is self-care for me!), write in a gratitude journal, light a scented candle, watch a sunrise/sunset, get a quick workout in, open all the windows and let the breeze blow through the house.

Rachael Burgess

Rachael, mom to 3: My office is my haven. It is the place I go for a little me time. It is fully stocked with scented candles, essential oils, and chocolate. The walls are covered in inspirational quotes, and family pictures. And this couch is the perfect finishing touch, so sometimes while I am working I may sneak in a nap… I deserve it. My office is my sanctuary.

Thank you to Matrescence for making this sponsored post possible – we are so appreciative!

Hatch Baby Rest Plus: One of our favorite sound machine/nightlights has now received an upgrade. Pair with their app to create a truly essential product for sleep that will grow with your little one. Now an audio monitor as well as a digital clock, this is a must have for any nursery.

Larken X Bra

Larken X Bra: Made of moisture-wicking, ultrasoft fabric, this nursing/pumping bra will be a great addition to your wardrobe. It allows you to pump hands-free without having to undress or change and is comfy enough to keep on all day long. There are also no snaps, zippers, or tags, making it far more comfortable as your size fluctuates.

Bugaboo Ant

Bugaboo Ant Travel Stroller: Bugaboo has entered the carry-on travel stroller game! The Ant is the only reversible seat travel stroller on the market and it offers great suspension. It has a height adjustable handle, a near-flat recline for newborns, and an adjustable seat height for taller kids. Available for pre-order now!
