New Mom Review: HALO Bassinest

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

New mama, Theresa, who is Gugu Guru’s Head of Design was offered the HALO Bassinest for review. Overall, she was absolutely thrilled with the product.  In this review, she lists the pros and cons from her experience.  We also gave HALO the opportunity to respond to the two cons from Theresa’s review and were pleased to discover that HALO has listened to their customers and is offering a new Bassinest stand this year to address customers’ opinions over the base size and weight.

Halo Bassinest

Pro: TONS of pockets
The HALO Bassinest swivel sleeper has three pockets for tons of storage (three pockets!) Diapers, wipes, diaper cream, burp clothes – if you have a c-section or are just exhausted in the middle of the night, everything is right at your finger tips.

Pro: Lots of cool features
This bassinet has everything you could want from music, vibration and a breast feeding timer all right at the ready for parents. Again this is a huge c section plus!

Pro: C section approved
The fact that the HALO Bassinest swivel sleeper comes right up to the side of your bed is a huge help for nursing and also after a c-section. I had to move minimally to get to my baby in the middle of the night. The swivel of the bassinet was the biggest help because I didn’t have to slide myself down the bed and pass the bassinet to get up. With the swivel, I can easily slide the bassinet (and baby) away from the bed so I could get on and off the bed with ease while healing.

Pro: Mesh/collapsing side
Even though most bassinets have mesh sides the HALO Bassinest has really large openings so it is very easy to see your baby while you are lying down. I also loved the collapsible side so I could touch my baby or put the pacifier in his mouth without even sitting up.

Pro: Room for baby to grow
I love how big the basket is that holds the baby. I happen to have a big baby (born almost 9 pounds) and as he has grown over the past three months, he still has plenty of room and sleeps comfortably as he wiggles around. My baby will get lots of future use in his HALO!

Halo Bassinest

Con: BIG base
This bassinet is not one that you can easily move from room to room during the day because the base is so large. It is hard to get it through doorways so you have to strictly use this bedside. (If you put it together in another room and then want to move it into your bedroom, it is a little tricky.)

HALO’s Response: The base is large, heavy and not designed to be moved. This keeps it firmly planted next to the bed where is used most of the time, but the unique swivel and glide give it movement. However, HALO recognized that parents want more mobility and is introducing a Bassinest stand toward the end of 2017. This will enable parents move the Bassinest throughout the house as some babies just sleep better in it, and parents would love to be able to provide that same safe sleep space when they move out of the bedroom.

Con: Additional Light needed (c-section specific)
The bassinet comes with two light sources. The first light source points to the floor and is very small. So if you are looking for some light in the dark to breastfeed, etc, this light won’t really help post c-section. There is a second light that shines in on the baby. I never felt the need to use this light because with the baby in such close proximity to me I felt I could check on him without the light.

HALO’s Response: With regard to the light there are actually two lights on the model: one which illuminates the floor so you don’t have to turn on a light if you are getting out of bed, and it was positioned that way so you wouldn’t disturb the baby. The other nightlight on the soothing center serves as a nightlight, and we believe many moms use this to gently lift baby out of the Bassinest for nursing. The amount of lighting needed likely varies from consumer to consumer, but these two features offer lighting close to the Bassinest to help mom and baby and should not disturb anyone else in the room.

Gugu Pick: MAM Perfect Pacifier

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Gugu Guru loves the MAM Perfect Pacifier. When it comes to safe sleep, industry experts consider pacifiers an absolute essential.  A study conducted in 2005 determined that use of a pacifier during naps and nighttime sleep reduces the chances of a baby suffering from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) by 90 percent.  With all nipples, there is a chance your baby may not accept a certain shape.  This can be especially frustrating with bottle feeding and pacifiers, and may force some trial and error before you discover the nipple your baby prefers. This is just one of the reasons we love the MAM pacifier line; the pacifier’s unique nipple with MAM’s SkinSoft™ silicone surface is so soft and feels more like mom that it is accepted by 94% of babies.

MAM has just introduced new designs for the brand’s signature MAM Perfect Pacifier including a new glow in the dark night range.  We can speak from real experience on our love for the MAM Perfect Pacifier because Gugu Guru’s founder, Monica, was a loyal customer to the pacifier for both of her babies.   You can see what Monica has to say about the Perfect in this video overview:

This launch comes with the announcement that recent clinical studies prove that the MAM Perfect Pacifier supports healthy teeth and jaw development, and in a recent study, the MAM Perfect Pacifier was shown to be the tooth friendliest of any pacifiers tested.

Why is this the case? The MAM Perfect Pacifier’s ultra-thin neck is 60% thinner and four times more flexible, making it the thinnest and most flexible pacifier on the market. Therefore, teeth have more room to grow and the risk of misalignment is reduced. The ultra-flexible nipple also makes soothing easier for baby.

The new designs for the MAM Perfect Pacifier are available exclusively at Babies R Us stores and online.

Real Mom Review: Snoo Smart Sleeper System

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

This review of the Snoo Smart Sleeper System is written by Emily Fette – a real life Gugu Guru registrant and new mom to Mallary.

When I was pregnant, I cross referenced all baby registry items with countless girlfriends and close cousins, as well as Amazon, Consumer Reports and online reviews. However, I couldn’t find enough feedback on the Snoo. Prior to baby Mallary being born, my husband and I were a little concerned about getting enough sleep especially when we both have to go back to work, so we thought spending a little extra money for a crib promoted as the “Snoo Smart Sleeper System” had to be worth something more. We also rationalized paying more for a crib that would be used for 6 months if we were happier parents with the Snoo Smart Sleeper System especially since the majority of cribs out there were the same price and lower quality.

Snoo Smart Sleeper System

Fortunately, after the first night home and my milk supply came in, Mallary has been a wonderful sleeper. We have to attribute at least some of this to the Snoo Smart Sleeper System. My husband and I regularly have white noise for us at night so listening to the crib’s gentle rain noise at the first level is perfect. In general, we think the five S’s of shushing, swaddling, swinging, (sucking, side position, not specifically applicable to the Snoo Smart Sleeper System) have really helped her.

While we haven’t had another basis of comparison, it’s very nice that once our baby’s needs (food, diaper and comfort) have been met that we can rely on the Snoo Smart Sleeper System over three quarters of the time to soothe her to sleep. When she is fussy, the Snoo progresses through more soothing noises and steadily more rocking motion, if the baby remains upset. She routinely loves the third or fourth stage that sounds like a submarine and quiets very quickly. However, if she isn’t asleep within five minutes, we know that she needs more comfort from her parents or another diaper change. Per Dr Harvey Karp, “In The Happiest Baby on the Block, I describe the motion to soothe crying as the “Jell-O head jiggle” because babies need a very fine, fast jiggle to calm. That motion actually activates the balance center of the brain where the reflex gets turned on.

Snoo Smart Sleeper System

The Snoo platform only moves ½ an inch – back and forth – which is enough to soothe most babies, imitating what it was like in mom’s belly. That amount of motion is perfectly safe and very different form baby “shaking.”’

We also really like the Snoo zippered swaddle sack that keeps her safe on her back. (It’s way easier than regular swaddle for a first time parent too!) She’s immediately comforted by the Velcro strap inside and the zippered swaddle before we even turn the rocking motion on! It really only takes 5 seconds like the website reports, too!

Our baby loves her hands that we sometimes leave the zipper a little undone for her to have them up next to her face. This usually happens if she stretches in her sleep:

Snoo Smart Sleeper System

I highly recommend this Snoo Smart Sleeper robo crib to anyone, especially if you’re concerned about SIDS, swaddling, rocking, or your sleep!

**EDITED TO INCLUDE THIS RESPONSE FROM THE TEAM AT SNOO: Thank you so much for your wonderful review of SNOO! We are so happy to hear that it helped you and your little girl get more sleep! We just wanted to share that we recommend that parents keep their baby’s arms down and not let them sneak out b/c this will become more important in the next 1-2 months as she starts accidentally whacking herself and waking herself up more often. If you think that swaddling with her arms down makes her unhappy, you can advance the speed of SNOO’s jiggle 1-2 levels to get her to fall asleep or lock it on purple or green all night. Thank you again for taking the time to write this review and please don’t hesitate to reach out to our customer care team if you have any questions about SNOO!**

Sleep Must Have: Weighted Blankets for Baby & Parents

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Weighted blankets are proven in clinical studies to alleviate stress or anxiety and help promote a deeper, longer sleep.  The reason why? Weighted blanket therapy can help increase Serotonin and Melatonin levels overnight.  Sleep is the holy grail for new parents and babies alike.  Parents want babies to sleep well because a good night’s sleep is imperative to baby’s health and development. Of course, we as parents want babies to sleep because parents also – sometimes desperately – need sleep. Weighted blankets can be game changers for your household slumber. We’re excited to tell you about two weighted blankets – one for parents and one wearable swaddle / blanket for baby – that will help the whole family get the sleep they need.

Weighted Blanket for Baby Nested Bean Zen Swaddle

First up: baby and the Nested Bean Swaddle. Because of the clear benefits, Nested Bean identified that babies tend to sleep better in your embrace or with your palm on their chest. They also understand that this is obviously not always possible so Nested Bean created a one of a kind, award winning swaddle for babies – the Zen Swaddle. The Zen Swaddle simulates the pressure from your touch with lightly weighted pads on baby’s chest and sides.

There are two options for the Zen Swaddle – The Zen Swaddle Classic is one layer of fabric, which means it is perfect for warmer months. At a very affordable price, you can have many of them, so baby won’t miss one night of sleeping well! The Zen Swaddle Premier has a double layer construction, which makes it perfect for cooler months. The Classic Swaddle features traditional baby light baby colors, while the Premier has more of a modern touch. The Swaddle is longer than most swaddles, making it most cost effective, as it will last your baby well into 6 months. They are 100% cotton and machine washable, and come in a variety of colors and patterns.

But, the best part of the Zen Swaddle? Parents who’ve tried the Zen Swaddle report their babies fall asleep easier and stay asleep longer within 1 to 3 nights. Win win for everyone! (Head over to Nested Bean to purchase a Zen Swaddle and receive 15% off with the code GUGU15.)

Next up: parents. Super, super important note that we have to stress here first – the weighted blankets shown here are intended for adult use. Do NOT use these blankets when you have an infant in the bed with you, especially a child under 20lbs.

Weighted Blankets

The Weighted Blanket from Brookstone uses the same comforting pressure as a loving hug to elicit sensations of calmness and relaxation. Evenly distributed weight provides optimal coverage and a safe, snug feeling for any individual.

Back to Daycare Essentials

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

-Sponsored Post-

It’s the time of year again when many little ones head to daycare, either for the first time, or seasoned little ones are heading back – what are the essential items which you need to remember for heading back to daycare? We rounded up some top daycare essentials which you don’t want to forget!

Labels: Labels are a must have essential for daycare, especially when you’re sending bottles, diapers, and baby gear. We’re big fans of Stuck on You labels for all of your little one’s stuff – everything needs to be labeled, from clothing to pacifiers, to bags, to bottles, to food items.  Stuck On You Name Labels are safe in the microwave, dishwasher and freezer, plus they come with a scratch resistant coating making them waterproof and super long lasting. These quality stick on name labels will go the distance on plastic toys for ‘show and tell’ and playtime! Multi Use Labels are ideal for using on stuffed toys as it will not only give them more personality, it will ensure that these treasured companions make it home if they are misplaced. We recommend sewing down the Multi Use Label to their stuffed toy for added security. We love how creative you can get with these labels – you can personalize them down to picking  font, which means your little one’s labels will be unique and special.

Diapers: While cloth diapering is becoming very popular for many parents, many daycares don’t allow for cloth diapers. Here’s a hint: remind them about a reduction in trash with cloth and that could make them reconsider. If you’re unable to talk the facility into cloth diapering and looking for an safe alternative to cloth diapers, we love Babyganics Diapers! Made with a new blend of plant-based materials, Babyganics diapers are intended for superior comfort and fit and enhanced absorbency. They have NO chlorine, latex, petroleum based lotions or fragrances. They are made with NeoNourish Seed Oil Blend: Babyganic’s own blend of tomato, sunflower, cranberry, black cumin and raspberry seed oils. They feature soft-stretch sides, leak control, and have a wetness indicator.

Safe Shoes: While not a concern for infants, toddlers need to have safe shoes to run around in! Many daycares ask that parents not send open-toed shoes, or sandals, as beginner walkers can have issues with them. We’re a fan of Bobux shoes, which has sturdy, safe and stylish shoes for newborns through kids. Bobux has been making incredible baby shoes since 1991, in fact Bobux invented the soft sole shoes with the ankle elastic system that makes these shoes easy to put on and they stay on! Made from 100% buttery soft leather that molds to baby’s feet. Many parents report that Bobux are the only shoes their baby will wear, because they are so soft and comfortable it’s like not wearing shoes at all.

Looking for tips for transitioning to daycare? We have some of our favorite tips from real parents in this post!

Thank you to Stuck on You for making this sponsored post possible.

Baby Safety Month: Strap in For Safety with JPMA

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Did you know September is Baby Safety Month? September is Baby Safety Month, sponsored annually by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA). This year, JPMA is helping educate parents and caregivers on the importance of properly using straps on all juvenile products.

Strap In For Safety

Keeping your baby safe and well is your number one goal as a parent so it goes without saying that you take every precaution when creating a safe environment.  But unfortunately, falls are still the leading cause of non-fatal injuries for all young children in the U.S. In fact, approximately 8,000 children are treated in emergency rooms for fall-related injuries every day. With these staggering statistics, be confident that you are doing everything right when it comes to your baby’s safety.

What Can You Do?

Direct supervision is a sure-fire way to prevent injury – watch, listen and stay near your child.  Strap In For Safety!

Child safety devices, like safety belts and straps, should always be used when available.

Straps and safety belts on baby gear reduce the risk of infant fall injuries.

For the safest product use, be sure to read and follow all manufacturer’s instructions and warning labels.

Whether it’s in the home or on the go, learn how to properly use straps on a variety of products and the importance of correctly using them EVERY time in order to keep baby safe.

Strap In For Safety

Visit www.babysafetymonth.org to learn more about creating the safest environment for your baby!

Amy Chezem is JPMA’s Senior Communications Manager and Baby Safety Month Program Director. Amy has managed the Baby Safety Month program for nearly two decades and helped expand the program creating one of JPMA’s largest consumer education and awareness programs to date.

Baby Palate-Training Tips from Little Foodie Club

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

One of the questions we see all the time in our mom groups online is “how do I even start baby on solids?” We know that anything food related can cause great anxiety for parents, so we’re excited about today’s guest blogger. Little Foodie Club is the brainchild of Kerstin Kühn, an international food writer, who has traveled and eaten her way around the world for more than 10 years. When it came to feeding her daughter Maxine, she realized the importance palate-training plays in raising a child who loves to eat vegetables and is willing to try new foods. So Kerstin developed her own range of baby purées with a culinary touch. She’s here today with some helpful and easy tips for making the introduction of solid food seamless and fun for both mama and baby. You can find Little Foodie Club on Facebook and Instagram.

Starting solids is one of the most exciting and fun milestones in a baby and new parent’s first year of life. But it’s also such a minefield of different opinions and contradictory information that it can quickly turn into a source of anxiety. Do you start with rice cereal or vegetables? How often can you safely introduce a new ingredient? Are nut butters and gluten safe? What if your baby chokes or has an allergic reaction?

It is essential you consult your pediatrician before starting solid foods, ensuring your baby is ready and there are no underlying food intolerances to worry about. But once you’ve been given the go ahead, you can let the fun begin. Here are a few tips on giving your baby the best start to a lifetime of happy, healthy eating habits.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • Highchair
  • Feeding spoons
  • Plastic bowls
  • Bibs
  • Blender

LET THE FUN BEGIN!

It’s important for you as the parent to stay focused on building your little one’s positive relationship with food. Here are a few tips on how to turn mealtime into fun time:

  • Highchair happiness: In the week before you start solids, sit your baby in the highchair and play games so there is a fun association with it.
  • Don’t worry: Your baby senses your emotions and will pick up on your excitement or anxiety. So try not to stress during mealtime.
  • Make faces: Smile, open your eyes and mouth wide and show your baby how excited you are that he or she is eating.
  • Talk about the food: Explain what your baby is eating by naming the ingredient, its color, smell and taste.

VEGETABLES AND VARIETY

Babies are very receptive to new tastes during the transition to solids foods so the more variety you introduce right from the start, the better. Research from the University College London found that starting babies on a variety of simple vegetables – i.e. one ingredient purees – during the first 15 days of introducing solids makes them significantly more willing to try, accept and like new vegetables later on.

WHAT ABOUT ALLERGIES AND THE THREE-DAY RULE?

Unless there is a strong family history of food allergies – in which case you should consult your pediatrician – you can confidently expose your baby to a new ingredient every day. The most recent scientific research suggests that the earlier potentially allergenic foods like peanuts or gluten are introduced, the less likely a baby is to develop an allergy later on.

AVOID RICE CEREAL

Experts don’t recommend starting with rice cereal as this has virtually zero impact on a baby’s taste development and very little nutritional value to boot. Studies have even suggested that babies who are first given rice cereal are more likely to be obese later in life and grow up to prefer processed over fresh foods.

FIVE FIRST FOODS TO START WITH:

Avocado: Loaded with essential vitamins, minerals and good fats, all of which are great for a developing baby, avocados are easy to digest and simple to blend – simply blitz with a few drops of water, breastmilk or formula.

Broccoli: The king of vegetables – packed with minerals (iron, calcium, magnesium, zinc and potassium) as well as vitamin C and B-complex vitamins – is a really great food to get your baby into as early as possible.

Carrots: Bright and colorful and packed with goodness, carrots are a brilliant first baby food. They are an excellent source of beta-carotene, which turns into vitamin A in the body and contain fiber, iron, calcium and vitamin C.

Pears: One of the least allergenic of all foods pears contain good quantities of fiber, making them great for digestion. If a little hard, simply poach in water for a few minutes before pureeing.

Zucchini: This summer squash is a wonderful first food as it’s mild tasting rich in B vitamins as well as lutein and zeaxanthin, which are excellent for promoting good eyesight. Steam for a few minutes until soft and blend.

21 DAYS TO SOLIDS

At Little Foodie Club, we understand that starting solids can be daunting. That’s why we have designed the Little Foodie Club 21 Days To Solids Plan: to help, support and enable parents to introduce their baby to solid foods with confidence and ease. Use promo code GUGUGURU17 and get $10 off.

Colgate Crib Mattress: The Best Investment A Parent Can Make

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

-Sponsored Post-

When it comes to buying baby and nursery items, it sometimes seems as though the list is beyond overwhelming – that’s why we, at Gugu Guru, understand the importance of personalizing your registry. Not everyone is going to need all of the same products, and we understand that! However, there is one item which is universal for all babies, and we think it’s the best investment you can make – a crib mattress. When it comes to picking a crib mattress, many times parents get totally overwhelmed by all the options, but one company has risen the ranks and proven to be the best investment a parent can make in their child’s future, Colgate Mattresses. While it may seem like a mundane item to buy, either for someone else, or for your own nursery, a crib mattress is the most important purchase for your baby, your family, and your future.

We’ve featured Colgate for Back to Sleep, Innovative Sleep Products, and as a Nursery Essential for Mother’s Day, plus Meet the Makers Behind the Mattresses

In 1955, Sol Wolkin and his wife Anne took over the Colgate Mattress Factory in Atlanta. Colgate expanded several times before relocating to its present 60,000 square foot location in Georgia. Colgate was founded on the values of integrity, loyalty, and honesty; Anne and Sol passed these principles onto their three children, Alan, Joan, and Richard, their five grandchildren, and their four great-grandchildren. Sol and Anne’s memory lives on, as do their family and business values. We’re huge fans of family owned businesses, and when you’re going to buy a big ticket item, such as a mattress, we always recommend going for the company with exceptional customer service!

Colgate Mattresses are truly a fantastic investment for many reasons. Colgate was the first to create light weight mattresses, which makes lifting the mattress to change the sheets a much easier task than traditional mattresses. Colgate mattresses are cleverly designed to accommodate baby as she transitions to the toddler phase with a simple flip of the mattress. One side is firm and supportive for infants while the other is slightly softer for toddler comfort. You’re investing in time! Not only is your time precious as a new parent, and you don’t have lengthy pockets of time to heave a heavy crib mattress up and down (hello, super lightweight mattress!), but investing in a mattress which will transition from newborn life to toddlerhood is truly a smart decision.

When it comes to Colgate, you’re also investing in the health and wellness of your baby. Colgate is committed to the health and safety of babies, and introduced the use of organic materials in crib mattresses, such as coconut coir, organic cotton and other plant-based materials. Furthermore, Colgate was also the first to manufacture a foam mattress, manufacture a dual-firmness mattress, and manufacture a mattress using organic materials. A crib mattress is the place your baby will spend the majority of its early days, so it is imperative to know all about the mattress you are buying. When you invest in Colgate, you invest in safe and healthy sleep for your little one, which will keep your mind at peace – bringing health and happiness to your home. Now, we think that’s a pretty good investment!

Thank you to Colgate for making this sponsored post possible.
