The Art of Short Form Pampering

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Photo credit: courtesy of Gisele Bunchen…
Beauty editor and new mom, Marina Klimasiewfski, shares with us some quick tips on how to feel pampered in just 5 minutes…

Before becoming a mom I would have told you that I had a pretty busy schedule with minimal downtime. A constant cycle of office and beauty industry events! Friends to visit and dishes to clean! Yet, built into my hectic routine was actually a ton of self care. Regular exercise, plus manicures and pedicures, seasonal massages, facials and haircuts were all de rigueur.

Now that I have a newborn at home the idea of having time for any one of those activities, let alone a schedule full of them, is truly laughable. The hour plus required for these tasks starts to look like a complex math problem (if A can watch the baby then I can go, subtract time for pumping while out, and add milk to fridge before leaving!). The logistical hurdles alone negate the soothing intent of any “long-form pampering”.

Just because any elaborate appointments are out, doesn’t and shouldn’t mean a total moratorium on self care. It means being a little more creative, and quick. Really the key to any quality pampering is sensory. A combination of calming and invigorating the five senses – sight, sound, taste, smell and touch. Some of these tips take a full five minutes, some take literally seconds, but all feel decadent after hours of having your hair pulled and being treated as a spit-up receptacle.

Organic Sea Kelp Facial Sheet Mask

1. Sheet Masques – the mom’s version of a facial. They are infinitely easier to apply than a regular masque. Literally, tear open the packet and slap on face. Most are quite hydrating, which is a plus for weary overtired skin. Bonus, baby may think this new face is a funny game. Huge variety (to the point where it somewhat overwhelming) at inexpensive prices on beautique.com.

bobuCuisine's Juice Boost Infusion Pitcher

2. At-home Spa Water – rather than reaching for cup of coffee #gazillion (which I so do), try making spa water. It’s shockingly easy – just add orange, lemon, or cucumber slices to regular water and it becomes that much more drinkable. To make it an even more instagram-worthy experience try adding fresh herbs like a sprig of mint, basil or rosemary, or even a chunk of peeled ginger.

Clarisonic

3. Face Brushing – spending an extra 2-3 minutes in the shower is one the easiest ways to sneak in “me-time”. Massaging the face feels soothing, removes dead skin cells and if the neck is included can help with lymphatic drainage. The traditional Clarisonic brush is great, but many budget versions provide a similar experience.

Clinique Sweet Pots

4. Lip Exfoliation – lips are full of nerve endings, so they are particularly sensitive to touch. A sugar scrub feels and tastes great, and leaves lips softer and more kissable. Clinique’s new sweet pots have a sugar scrub on one side and a lip balm on the other, making for a portable experience. It’s also easy to DIY this one – just mix large grain sugar (ie: sugar in raw) with enough olive oil to make a paste, rub on lips and rinse.

GOOD HOME SUMMER COTTAGE LEMON VERBENA CANDLE

5. Scent Swap – empty the diaper garbage bin, even if the smell isn’t detectable, open a window, and light a candle in a scent similar to those recommended for spa water. Go with something citrus or herbal, not floral or fruity – for a noticeably invigorating experience.

No matter what the phone has to spend these five minutes in a different room. Mindfulness is the buzzword of 2016 with good reason. Unplugging and being present is a form of pampering in and of itself. Remember, good self care is essential to taking good care of someone else!

Gugu Guru is One Year Old!

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Happy birthday to us, happy birthday to us!

We can’t believe that it’s been ONE YEAR since we launched Gugu Guru’s baby registry. Wow! So many people to thank but most of all we want to thank the growing number of moms who have entrusted us with their baby registries!

To celebrate this birthday event, we’ve teamed up with Paper Fox LA‘s founder, Jessica Deans (and brand new mama to beautiful one month old Poppy). Paper Fox LA is one of the coolest party and event planning resources out there.  Just check out their look book. Here Jessica shares some tips for planning a smashing first birthday for your little.

1) Create a focal point like a dessert bar, cocktail cart or photo wall and use the majority of your decorations in that one area to maximize the wow factor. Having one big, eye catching display, vs. small decorative pieces scattered about, will really give your party a professional vibe. Plus it makes the perfect photo-op for all your guest to instagram about.

Paper Fox LA

2) Use a smart phone app to create your invitations. I love a good quality paper invite, believe me, but at the end of the day, everyone really wants to have the party info on their phone anyway. Red Stamp is my go-to invite generator. They have amazing designs and the invite can be sent as a text to all your guests. That way there is less of a chance they will lose it, AND they can RSVP instantly.

02-Smash-Birthdays-Red-Stamp

3) Get a small cake. If you are having 30 people at your party, only a small handful will actually want cake – unless the majority of your guests are children over the age of 4. I like getting a 6″ cake for most of my events. It provides a festive focal point on the dessert bar, and just enough cake for everyone to have a nibble… usually we have lots of candy, food, drinks and snacks so by the time we get around to cutting the cake, everyone has already had their fill of sweets anyway. If you are worried you’ll need more, order some mini cupcakes as well.

DIY Pom Pom Swaddle Blankets

by Gugu Guru 12 Comments

I’m excited to partner with Guru Guru and 4moms today to bring you these DIY pom pom swaddle blankets! Pom pom trim is so fun to sew with and adds a fun pop of color to any project!

baby-swaddle-pom-pom

For these blankets, I used solid color double gauze and paired with a fun trim color. I never have enough swaddle blankets around with a new baby and with my third coming soon, I wanted some cute, washable swaddles that will also look really great in photos!

rockaroo-swaddle-blanket

The 4moms rockaRoo is so stylish in its sleek grey and these blankets look great with them! Some of my favorite features of the rockaRoo are the washable grey cover (no more pastel yellow baby products, yay!), iPhone jack and swing speeds.

We are super excited to use this with our new baby, but our model seemed to love it.

Instructions:

pom-pom-tutorial

Trim double gauze down to 36″ by 44″, making sure all the edges are even and straight. (Diagram below shows a right and wrong side for clarification, but double gauze fabric is generally reversible.)
2Fold side edges over 1/4″ and press well.
Repeat on top and bottom edges.

4. Fold over all edges one more time, this time folding over 3/8″ on each side. Stitch around the rectangle 1/4″ from the edge. Backstitch when threads meet. You’ll have a nice clean edge, all ready for trim!

tutorial-1

tutorial-2
Get your pom pom trim ready. Pin or clip it to the back of the swaddle blanket with the poms right up against the edge of the blanket.

tutorial-4 tutorial-3
Stitch along blanket 1/8″ from edge, securing the pom pom trim as you go. You’ll end up with 2 straight lines of stitching that leave a nice clean finish to the blanket.

tutorial-6
When the pom pom trim meets itself, overlap the ends and taper them into the inside of the blanket before stitching. Trim excess.

tutorial-7
All done and ready to snuggle your sweet baby or package up for a baby shower gift!

Nikki Dinki: A Foodie Mom’s Registry

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Nikki Dinki is the TV host of Junk Food Flip on the Cooking Channel, a cookbook author, radio host, and voiceover artist. This New York based chef rose to fame by hosting a cooking show on YouTube, the nation got to know her on Food Network Star, and now she’s expecting a baby girl in April! Just in time for National Nutrition Month, the author of the new cookbook “Meat on The Side” shares some of her feeding Gugu Guru registry picks with us, and what she’s selected to feed her soon-to-arrive little foodie!

Nikki Dinki Inglesina Fast Chair

Inglesina Fast Chair: A Gugu Guru favorite, this lightweight baby-chair is a perfect companion for any parent! With its fold-flat closing system for no-hassle use and easy transportation, you can easily tote this chair around from restaurant to restaurant, or even on a vacation. At only 4.2 pounds, this chair can be thrown in the bottom of a stroller, or even in the diaper bag. The Fast Chair is easily washable, yet very sturdy, and able to be attached to a variety of table-top widths. Its compactness is perfect for Nikki who lives in a city apartment and is also a frequent traveler.

Nikki Dinki Beaba BabyCook

Beaba Babycook: Looking to make your own baby food but feel overwhelmed? Let the Beaba Babycook help! This small (key word being: small) countertop appliance is unique in that it steams, blends, warms, and defrosts meals for your little one. Want to make your baby a fast meal? The Beaba steams fruits and veggies in 15 minutes, blends them into a puree, all the while preserving all of the nutrients and vitamins! When it comes time to clean up, just throw the bowl and basket in the dishwasher so it’s ready to go again soon!

Nikki Dinki Kiinde Foodi

Kiinde Foodii Starter Kit: As your baby learns to eat more solid foods, they will enjoy slurping down pouches of delicious pureed fruits and veggies. The Kiinde Foodii Starter Kit makes it incredibly easy to fill pouches with your homemade baby food and purees. These BPA, PVC, latex, and pthalate-free pouches are a perfect way to feed baby on the go, send to daycare with baby, or simply keep in the fridge for meal time. If baby isn’t old enough to feed him or herself from a pouch yet, you can twist a soft silicone squeeze spoon onto the pouch and squeeze the puree from the pouch directly into the spoon – mess free!

Nikki Dinki Babyganics

Babyganics Alcohol-Free Foaming Hand Sanitizer, Toy & High Chair Wipes and Hand & Face Wipes: When it comes to clean up time, you want something strong enough to clean up food from the high chair, but sensitive enough to be around your baby! Babyganics Toy & High Chair Wipes are the perfect answer – made from non-allergenic plant based ingredients, these wipes are free from ammonia, bleach, phosphates, parabens, sulfates, phthalates, fragrances or dyes. Safe to use on toys, high chairs, and table tops, and even safer to be around your little one! And, of course, Babyganics shines again with their Hand Sanitizer (great for moms and safe for baby), which is alcohol-free and kills 99.9% of germs. As well as with their Hand & Face Wipes, which quickly get baby clean after a messy feeding. Pediatrician and Dermatologist tested, these soft wipes are hypoallergenic and get the job done!

Nikki Dinki Bambu Kids

bambu Kids Bowl, Spoons and Hemp Bib: When it comes to feeding your baby, you also want to make sure whatever you’re using to feed baby is healthy, since it is going into his or her mouth! We love the bambu Kid and Baby Utensils – made from certified organic bamboo, they are phthalate-free and BPA-free. The line certainly fits with Nikki’s request to have natural products that aren’t “too colorful”.  We all loved the organic hemp denim bib with adorable honey bee detail (bambu’s bee-themed products support the Honey Bee Research Lab at Oregon State University!) With a variety of choices, from spoons, bowls, and teethers and more, the bambu line is going surely going to be a hit with your baby and safely grow with them to toddlerhood.

Nikki Dinki

Jenna Helwig’s Real Baby Food Cookbook: When it comes to figuring out what to feed a baby, sometimes you need to turn to a book, which is why we are big fans of Jenna Helwig’s Real Baby Food Cookbook. Helwig, the food editor at Parents magazine, makes the art of creating baby food so simple, even for busy moms and dads. She guides you through the early days of simple foods, to adding spices, meats, flavors, and even multi-flavor blends like Salmon, Kale, and Sweet Potato Smash. With over 100 meals in the book, your little one is sure to have a head-start on their culinary palate!

Nikki Dinki Baby Gap

Organic foodie graphic one-piece from Baby Gap: Nikki’s sister got her this organic footed onesie from Baby Gap and we are now obsessed. 100% certified organic cotton with a beautiful screen printed illustration.
