    Registry Must Haves: Infant Feeding

by Christine Swearingen Leave a Comment

When it comes to a registry, there are a few brands that are a must to check out whether you are breastfeeding, pumping, bottle feeding and anything in between. We’re breaking it down to our must haves for all types of feeding.

    Breastfeeding

Nanobebe’s Breastmilk Starter Set is great for moms who plan to breastfeed or pump. It includes everything you need to conveniently pump, store, warm, and feed. The bottle is one of a kind and mimics the natural breastfeeding latch for baby to allow for a smooth transition from breast, to bottle, and back.

    Formula Feeding

Nanobebe’s Flexy silicone baby bottle is perfect for formula feeding babes. With a natural feel and non-collapsing nipple it’s easy for baby, and with a non-tip stable base and easy to clean design, it’s easy for parents too.

    Pumping

Even if you don’t plan to pump, it’s important to register for a pump or apply for one through your insurance so you are prepared for anything. Our favorites are the Motif Luna Double Electric Breast Pump (with Battery), or for something more portable, the Luna Duo.

You’ll also want to register for breastmilk storage bags. Nanobebe sells lie-flat, breastmilk storage bags for the freezer or fridge that allow for safe and quick thawing and warming. They even sell an organizer to save space when storing.

    First Foods

Though it seems a far way off when you’re creating your registry, registering for items you’ll need when starting foods with your little one is a great idea. We love ezpz for all things feeding accessories! From silicone suction mats that actually stay in place, to cups to silverware and more, they have all the accessories you’ll need to for mealtime.

Snacks are always a must have! Little Bellies offers truly delicious organic foods for babies and toddlers. The snacks are age-appropriate with subtle flavors and textures littles will love. They are great for on the go and you’ll be glad you registered for these ahead of time.

If you are interested in making your own baby food, check out the First Years First Fresh Foods Blender & Steamer. It steams and blends fruit to the custom consistency you choose for your baby and its design makes it super easy to clean (can you say dishwasher safe?).

    A Word of Advice

How you feed your baby is a very personal decision. No matter how you choose to feed your baby, you are a great mom. Only you know what the right choice is for you and your little one. We wish we had a crystal ball and could tell you exactly what you need, but we think it’s always a good idea to be prepared for anything. Most baby registries will allow you to easily return items for a gift card if you end up not needing something. Keep that in mind as you register and cover all your bases!

by Abby Ludwig Leave a Comment

Whether you’re feeding a newborn, a toddler, or your entire family, our experienced Mom Creators have the best advice. Our creators are real moms (like you!) who are sharing their advice on products they have used with their own kids. Check out some excellent tips and tricks straight from our network of experienced moms. We’ve been there mama, and we got you!

    Breastfeeding

If you’re going to breastfeed your little one, it is so important to have a great feeding pillow. They will give baby extra support, lifting your little love closer to nurse. In turn, you will save your lower back from the added pain of leaning forward during mealtime. A favorite for many of our Mom Creators is the nursing pillow by bbhugme. It is customizable to your size and shape, making it great for moms of all sizes. Plus it works well for bottle-fed babies and has a great carrying case for travel.

    Pumping

Pumping can feel like a full-time job, so it’s great to make things a little easier with an excellent pump and some pump-friendly clothing. Our Mom Creators are constantly raving about the items from Kindred Bravely. Comfortable bras, joggers, and pajamas that will always answer the question, “What does a new mom wear?”

    Bottle Feeding

Bottles should be easy to use, easy to clean, and easy to put together. Whether they are glass, plastic, or silicone, find a bottle you love to use and it’s likely your little one will fall in suit. Our Mom Creators are in love with the silicone nanobébé bottles. They have a vented nipple to help your little one with gas issues and are great if you’re going between breast and bottle. Check here for even more reviews on nanobébé.

    Introducing Solids

Your little one’s not so little anymore and you’re ready to introduce solids. Where to start and what products might I need? We love the whole line from Green Sprouts baby – from burp cloths, to silicone first foods feeder, to bibs, they have so many excellent eco-friendly basics. They even have an entire line of cups that have been made out of plants! Their products grow with your little ones and you will use them over and over with every single stage.

Our Mom Creators have been there and done that. See more products our Mom Creators have tried and loved with their little ones.

Pocket-sized with a punch—meet Motif Medical’s New Duo Breast Pump

by Maria West Leave a Comment

    By Maria West

Here’s the pumping secret no one tells you: your sessions are only as good as your equipment. And Motif Medical is changing the breast pump game. A team of medical industry professionals developed the brand’s top-of-the-line portable breast pumps and nursing accessories. Lactation experts and moms alike rank Motif products at the top of their lists.

    Meet the Motif Duo Pump

The Duo Double Electric Breast Pump takes multi-tasking or pumping on the go to a whole new level. Paired with Motif’s lanyard and a hands-free pumping bra, the Duo does all the work while you do anything else. There’s a reason it was voted the best lightweight breast pump by What to Expect.

This small-but-mighty breast pump is not only 100% portable, but its rechargeable battery lasts 2.5 hours. That means no more scrambling to find an outlet or being tied to the office closet.

    A clean, simple design

    • A closed system prevents backflow from milk into the pump’s tubes and motor
    • Quiet enough for those late-night pumping sessions or work settings
    • Weighs <1 lb and can fit in most purses, diaper bags, or glove compartments

    Software features to love

Time-saving, milk-producing power comes from the pump’s programming. Higher vacuum settings aren’t always the answer, though, as they can cause pain and damage to your nipples.

We know the Duo is a cutie, but its software is what gives the power moms want. The Duo program includes:

    • Expression or massage pumping modes with 10 levels each stimulate letdown and get the most comfort and milk
    • Frequency function
    • Programmable memory that records and tracks your favorite settings for next time

    Using a portable breast pump

Portable breast pumps allow the freedom to pump away from a wall and in an on-the-go situation like a car or public transportation. Pumping in public or while doing other activities can take some getting used to, but don’t knock it ‘til you try it. A few things to remember:

    • Clean hands and pump parts as best as you can before use. If you don’t have access to soap and water at a sink, use pump disinfectant spray or wipes and hand sanitizer.
    • Wear a pumping bra. The Motif Duo comes with a hands-free pumping bra
    • Keep your outfit accessible. Wear a top or dress that’s easy to unbutton, lift, or pull down to situate your pump. Avoid wearing tight or short shirts like a fitted crop top while pumping.
    • Relax! Your stress levels impact your milk output, so take a few deep breaths. You’ve got this.
    • Put milk in a sealed container immediately. Label and refrigerate any milk within 4 hours of pumping.
    • Clean your pump parts. Rinse or wipe pump parts before your next use.

After a few goes, you’ll be a pro in no time!

    Motif’s breast pump selection

This isn’t Motif’s only praise-worthy pump. The brand has won awards and been featured in dozens of “top breast pump” lists across the internet. Actress Mandy Moore even called the Motif Luna breast pump her “MVP accessory” during the 73rd Emmy Awards. Lactation experts and moms love it, too, with 90% of surveyed women preferring the Luna over other comparable options.

Read a real mom’s review of the Motif Luna here.

Motif has three other breast pumps besides its Duo:

    • Luna Double Electric Breast Pump: Loved by moms who want more milk in less time, the Luna is a corded or battery-powered crowd favorite and weighs just two pounds.
    • Twist Double Electric Breast Pump: An “affordable portable” option with twist-activated suction for easy pumping sessions, this simple design comes without all the bells and whistles. Great for keeping a backup pump at the office or in the car.
    • Manual Silicone Breast Pump: Made with 100% food-grade silicone, this manual pump uses suction to pump or collect letdown one breast at a time.

Happy pumping! Most insurance will cover the majority of breast-pump costs for expecting moms. Use Motif Medical’s Insurance Lookup Tool to see your potential coverage for any of their products.

    All About the Nipple

by Abby Ludwig Leave a Comment

We spend so much time talking about bottles. What’s important about bottles, what they’re made out of… the reality is – We have to start paying more attention to the nipple. Especially for those babies who are going between bottle and breast.

When you think about breastfed babies taking a bottle, the key is nipple placement. When they’re nursing, they’re actually taking the nipple and pulling it into their mouth to really reach back where their hard palate meets their soft palate. Your bottle nipples need to mimic that movement so that when they go between bottle and breast it is simple for them and comfortable for you.

Taking a closer look, you’ll see some anti-collapsible features built right into the nipple as well as vents. The vents are important because they allow air to escape while your little one eats. The non-collapsible design features ridges that prevent the nipple from inverting, so feeding time isn’t interrupted and baby keeps their natural latch. These are both features that will make the eating process so much more seamless. Bon appetit to your babes!

Thank you to Nanobébé for creating an excellent product and for your help with this post.

Check out more about their incredible line of products and see what real moms had to say.

The ESSENTIAL Nursing (or Pumping) Product

by Abby Ludwig Leave a Comment

Any guesses? We went back to our real moms who have to share the quintessential product to make nursing (or pumping) way more comfortable. No, it’s not a great pump, excellent bras, or nursing-friendly clothing – which are all things we love too. Instead, you have to have the best nipple around, by Earth Mama.

Erin’s review of Earth Mama’s Organic Nipple Butter

Erin: “I want to talk about a few mama products that I loved because I think we focus so much on baby, that we forget to take care of ourselves. And that’s so important. What I really loved early on was the Earth Mama Salve [I believe it’s a Nipple Balm] that you can use on cracked nipples. I also thought it was the best lip balm I’ve ever used in my life. I always kept it on my bedside table so that… in the beginning of my breastfeeding journey, we did have some latch issues, there was some cracking, there was a lot of discomfort, so I would apply that after feeding. It is safe to leave on, but it’s also the world’s best lip balm ever. I think I went through one little jar a month of it, I thought it was great.”

Lisa’s Review of Earth Mama’s Organic Nipple Butter

Lisa: “Hi, It’s Lisa from Gugu Guides. I had another recommendation I wanted to share with you today. It’s for Earth Mama Organic Nipple Butter. This stuff in the little pink jar is amazing. I used it for all three of my nursing journeys and it’s a lifesaver. It is super moisturizing and not with a big perfumy smell. It just smells clean and honestly just like I would expect a nipple butter to smell. But there’s no super odorous perfume to it, which is one of the main reasons I love it. I also use this for a lip balm. If you have dry lips, it makes your lips feel super soft and moisturized. And then another side use for this product, that I found, is if you have dried or cracked heels, this works really great, just overnight. Put it on, put some socks on, go to bed, and wake up with much smoother, soft, moisturized feet. A multi-use product for you and I highly recommend it.”

We also love that the nipple butter comes in a vegan option for our plant-based families.

Real Mom Reviews: Nanobébé Flexy Silicone Bottle

by Abby Ludwig Leave a Comment

Your little one is about to arrive and you’re looking to be fully stocked for feeding. Unsure about your feeding path, you feel that it’s best to have some bottles ready to go. How do you select the best bottle for your needs? While the pieces and parts of many bottles may leave you feeling confused, we want to make sure you’ve seen the newest option from Nanobébé. Made from a soft, mom-like silicone, this bottle is easy to use and even simpler to clean. It has a non-collapsing nipple and a very stable base. We reached out to our team of moms to see how the Flexy bottle stood up to everyday use.

    Heather

“The Nanobébé bottles are a household fave for our family! They are so easy to use, clean, and put together. My favorite part is that they don’t tip over during late-night feedings on our nursery chair because of the big base. Our baby prefers them over the other bottles we have and so do we!”

    Haley

“The Flexy Silicone Nanobébé baby bottle is by far my son’s favorite. The ultra-soft silicone makes breastfeeding and bottle feeding nearly indistinguishable, and the bottle has a triple-vented nipple to prevent colic.  The shape is familiar for babies and easy to hold. He latches on wonderfully every time and I love to bottle feed him with this line!

Although not the bottle, I’d also recommend the pacifiers from Nanobébé. The flexy pacifiers are my son’s favorite. He is only one month so many of them fall out of his mouth easily, but this pacifier is easier for him to latch onto even when he turns his head to the side. It’s one of the few that gets him to calm down.”

    Jade

“We love love love the Nanobébé bottles!! Especially when it comes to cleaning! Bottle cleaning after a long day is always dreaded, but these bottles have so few parts it makes it not so bad! Also, they can stand on almost anything! I put them down on the arm of the chair as I’m about to feed my little guy and it doesn’t fall over as I rock the chair back to sit down. I really can’t say enough good things about them and choose them over every other bottle we’ve tried!”

    Leah

    No description available.

“We tried a few different bottles before I returned to work and the Nanobébé Flexy bottle was the only bottle my babe would take without gulping air. These bottles were an easy transition and didn’t create nipple confusion. The soft silicone makes it feel more like mom vs. plastic or glass bottles too. The bottles are easy to clean and can hook up right to my Spectra flanges. We recently bought the handles that fit right onto the bottles and love them also. The only setback to this bottle is that the silicone takes longer to warm up breastmilk. I usually heat the milk up in a breastmilk bag first to make it faster!” *We did notice that heating up silicone bottles tends to take longer than heating plastic bottles, due to their thick, natural material.

    Emmy

“I was skeptical about the soft silicone bottle from Nanobébé with my little ones. Some silicone is too soft and squishy, but boy was I wrong! I love how they feel in my hand and they are always stable when I set them down on the edge of the couch. My babies both take formula easily from these bottles, and I love that even the big 9-ounce bottle doesn’t feel too big. The big bottles also came with the slow flow nipple, which was nice so I didn’t have to worry about finding the right flow nipple for my newborns. The only downside is that I do have small hands and the wide base makes them a little awkward to hold. After the first few feedings, it wasn’t such a big deal anymore, and I actually found that my baby was able to hold the bottle by himself much earlier than other bottles.”

    Lexie

    No description available.

“I love these bottles! I’ve used many other brands and these are by far my favorite. They are so easy to clean and assemble. I love that there aren’t a ton of pieces like other bottles. The silicone makes them very easy to grip and the shape is great for him learning to hold it by himself!”

As you can see, our real moms just can’t get enough of the Nanobébé Flexy Bottles. The bottles are modern, convenient, and make feeding so much simpler.

5 Common Feeding Mistakes New Moms Make

by Jenna Hatfield Leave a Comment

Feeding your baby will take up a majority of your time in those early days. It can feel overwhelming to new parents for a variety of reasons. Knowing how much to feed your baby and when, what to do when something is wrong, and what exactly “right” feels and looks like are all new concepts. New moms can make some common feeding mistakes in the beginning, but we’re here to help.

Photo by Kelly Sikkema on Unsplash

Having Firm Expectations About The Feeding process

While it’s good to have a plan, the reality of parenting is that you need to be flexible. Perhaps you intended to exclusively breastfeed, but your little one came early, requiring pumping and supplementing. Maybe you were set on one type of formula, but your baby’s tummy had other plans. Speaking of your baby’s tummy, your own diet could need to be altered depending on how they react to certain foods you consume while breastfeeding. There are so many possibilities that could change your best-intended plans. Learning to remain flexible and pivot to whatever is best for your baby will benefit you both in the long run.

Staying In The Same Routine For Too Long

Just when you finally figure out what works best for your baby, it’s going to change. Your little one will hit a growth spurt and require more frequent nursing sessions or another ounce in their bottle. They’ll experience a sleep regression and change up their eating habits again. Sticking too ardently to the feeding schedule that once worked will frustrate you both. Just like having to be flexible when it comes to your expectations, learning to be flexible with your baby’s feeding routine is vitally important.

Trying Too Many Things Too Quickly

On the flip side of sticking it out too long in a routine, trying too many new things too quickly is another common feeding mistake. When your baby turns their head from a feeding, don’t immediately assume a growth spurt is over, they’re done with that formula, or are trying to wean. Maybe they got distracted by their sibling running around the room. Maybe they just aren’t hungry at this particular minute. Changing their schedule or bottle, introducing new foods, or switching formula because of one rejected feeding will only confuse your baby—and you.

Photo by hui sang on Unsplash

Additionally, as your baby begins to eat solids, introducing foods slowly is key. According to the Mayo Clinic, you should offer single-ingredient foods three to five days apart to watch for any reactions. Slowly introducing foods in this way allows you to catch any possible sensitivities or allergies. Your little one might also reject those first feedings because the texture and taste are new. Try again in a week. If they’re still rejecting attempts at solid foods, you’ll want to reach out for help. Which brings us to the next point…

Waiting Too Long To Seek Out Help

As moms, we want to be able to tend to our baby’s needs. However, sometimes we need help. If you’ve tried to resolve a feeding issue on your own but still feel like something is off, it’s time to reach out for help. If you’re struggling with breastfeeding, be it latch or tummy issues for your baby, reach out to your pediatrician earlier rather than later. Latch issues can be fixed quickly and easily, resulting in a happier baby—and mom. If you feel like your baby might not be reacting well to their formula, reach out. As we mentioned in the previous point, if your baby rejects solid, pureed food for a few weeks after initial introduction, it’s time to call the doctor. Your pediatrician has seen it all and will have helpful, productive suggestions to help you and your infant through the rough spot.

Being Too Hard On Yourself As A New Parent

You’re new at this. Guess what? So is your baby. Together, you’re going to figure this out. You may have to ask for help with common feeding mistakes from your pediatrician, lactation consultant, friends, or family members. You may have to try new things for a little while to see if they work. You will have to be flexible for sure. But you’re going to be okay. Your baby is going to be okay. You’re both going to get through this learning curve and head into a new one—together.

Including two spoons, one silicone-divided bowl, and 3 bibs, you will have everything you need to feed your baby or toddler. The bib had an excellent storage pocket, which will also keep messes at bay. Another excellent set of essentials from Green Sprouts. Shop more of Dominique’s reviews here.
