Nikki Dinki: A Foodie Mom’s Registry

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Nikki Dinki is the TV host of Junk Food Flip on the Cooking Channel, a cookbook author, radio host, and voiceover artist. This New York based chef rose to fame by hosting a cooking show on YouTube, the nation got to know her on Food Network Star, and now she’s expecting a baby girl in April! Just in time for National Nutrition Month, the author of the new cookbook “Meat on The Side” shares some of her feeding Gugu Guru registry picks with us, and what she’s selected to feed her soon-to-arrive little foodie!

Nikki Dinki Inglesina Fast Chair

Inglesina Fast Chair: A Gugu Guru favorite, this lightweight baby-chair is a perfect companion for any parent! With its fold-flat closing system for no-hassle use and easy transportation, you can easily tote this chair around from restaurant to restaurant, or even on a vacation. At only 4.2 pounds, this chair can be thrown in the bottom of a stroller, or even in the diaper bag. The Fast Chair is easily washable, yet very sturdy, and able to be attached to a variety of table-top widths. Its compactness is perfect for Nikki who lives in a city apartment and is also a frequent traveler.

Nikki Dinki Beaba BabyCook

Beaba Babycook: Looking to make your own baby food but feel overwhelmed? Let the Beaba Babycook help! This small (key word being: small) countertop appliance is unique in that it steams, blends, warms, and defrosts meals for your little one. Want to make your baby a fast meal? The Beaba steams fruits and veggies in 15 minutes, blends them into a puree, all the while preserving all of the nutrients and vitamins! When it comes time to clean up, just throw the bowl and basket in the dishwasher so it’s ready to go again soon!

Nikki Dinki Kiinde Foodi

Kiinde Foodii Starter Kit: As your baby learns to eat more solid foods, they will enjoy slurping down pouches of delicious pureed fruits and veggies. The Kiinde Foodii Starter Kit makes it incredibly easy to fill pouches with your homemade baby food and purees. These BPA, PVC, latex, and pthalate-free pouches are a perfect way to feed baby on the go, send to daycare with baby, or simply keep in the fridge for meal time. If baby isn’t old enough to feed him or herself from a pouch yet, you can twist a soft silicone squeeze spoon onto the pouch and squeeze the puree from the pouch directly into the spoon – mess free!

Nikki Dinki Babyganics

Babyganics Alcohol-Free Foaming Hand Sanitizer, Toy & High Chair Wipes and Hand & Face Wipes: When it comes to clean up time, you want something strong enough to clean up food from the high chair, but sensitive enough to be around your baby! Babyganics Toy & High Chair Wipes are the perfect answer – made from non-allergenic plant based ingredients, these wipes are free from ammonia, bleach, phosphates, parabens, sulfates, phthalates, fragrances or dyes. Safe to use on toys, high chairs, and table tops, and even safer to be around your little one! And, of course, Babyganics shines again with their Hand Sanitizer (great for moms and safe for baby), which is alcohol-free and kills 99.9% of germs. As well as with their Hand & Face Wipes, which quickly get baby clean after a messy feeding. Pediatrician and Dermatologist tested, these soft wipes are hypoallergenic and get the job done!

Nikki Dinki Bambu Kids

bambu Kids Bowl, Spoons and Hemp Bib: When it comes to feeding your baby, you also want to make sure whatever you’re using to feed baby is healthy, since it is going into his or her mouth! We love the bambu Kid and Baby Utensils – made from certified organic bamboo, they are phthalate-free and BPA-free. The line certainly fits with Nikki’s request to have natural products that aren’t “too colorful”.  We all loved the organic hemp denim bib with adorable honey bee detail (bambu’s bee-themed products support the Honey Bee Research Lab at Oregon State University!) With a variety of choices, from spoons, bowls, and teethers and more, the bambu line is going surely going to be a hit with your baby and safely grow with them to toddlerhood.

Nikki Dinki

Jenna Helwig’s Real Baby Food Cookbook: When it comes to figuring out what to feed a baby, sometimes you need to turn to a book, which is why we are big fans of Jenna Helwig’s Real Baby Food Cookbook. Helwig, the food editor at Parents magazine, makes the art of creating baby food so simple, even for busy moms and dads. She guides you through the early days of simple foods, to adding spices, meats, flavors, and even multi-flavor blends like Salmon, Kale, and Sweet Potato Smash. With over 100 meals in the book, your little one is sure to have a head-start on their culinary palate!

Nikki Dinki Baby Gap

Organic foodie graphic one-piece from Baby Gap: Nikki’s sister got her this organic footed onesie from Baby Gap and we are now obsessed. 100% certified organic cotton with a beautiful screen printed illustration.

Product Discovery: Binxy Baby

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

As a new parent, one of the first and most necessary places you will take your little baby is to the grocery store. However, as you will quickly realize, there is no easy way to fit a week’s worth of groceries in your cart with baby in tow. If you place their entire infant seat in the body of the cart, there is literally no room for the food, and most strollers don’t have extra room for boxes of cereal, fresh fruit, and meat! What’s a busy parent to do? As a mother herself, the founder of Binxy Baby, Lisa Pinnell, came up with the perfect solution: the Binxy Baby Shopping Cart Hammock!

Binxy Baby Shopping Cart Hammock

The Binxy Baby Hammock is created from two layers of upholstery weight fabric and reinforced seams, making it safe and secure for up to 50 pounds of weight. Utilizing two sturdy 12 inch clips on both sides that hook over the edge of the shopping cart, which are then secured to the shopping cart with a strong velcro strap, the Binxy Baby Hammock meets or exceeds all safety standards. With the combination of the clips and velcro, you can rest easy knowing that the Hammock will not tip, slide, or move with your baby inside.

Binxy Baby Shopping Cart Hammock

Simply pick which color Binxy Baby Hammock works for you, throw it in your diaper bag, and strap it on to the cart at the store. Your baby will be securely strapped in, comfortable, and you will have room for the groceries! Is your baby asleep in their infant seat? No worries, tucked inside a pocket on the Hammock is a special strap specifically made to hold infant seats in the Hammock. Assemble the Binxy Baby Hammock as you normally would, place the infant seat on top, and use the special seat belt to secure baby’s infant carrier to the Hammock. Safe and easy!

Binxy Baby Shopping Cart Hammock

Have multiples? You can use two Binxy Baby Hammocks at one time, making your shopping trip a whole lot smoother (or, as smooth as it can be with two babies!). Binxy Baby Hammocks can be thrown in the washing machine for easy clean up, and then placed back in the diaper bag or purse for the next shopping trip. You don’t have to stress out about taking your infant into the world anymore (or worry about lugging the whole infant seat into the store!), Binxy Baby Hammock makes it possible for you to continue living life and running errands.

Always Close to My Heart: The Best Baby Carriers

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

BREEZE_Black_Hug

Baby K’Tan Breeze
The new Breeze from Baby K’Tan is a baby carrier that goes on as easy a t-shirt and finally takes the guesswork out of baby wearing. Baby K’Tan knows that one size rarely fits all, so they sized Breeze like clothing (it comes in XS -XL). Parents love the Breeze for its versatility and comfort. Half of the carrier is mesh, while the other half is a solid cotton. Depending on the season, you can switch it around for baby to be warm in the winter or cooler in the warmer months. The double loop design helps evenly distribute weight across the back and shoulders. Amateur baby wearers will love the usability of this carrier.

Mompreneur Spotlight: Kathy Boyanovich of Petite Vigogne

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

This week’s Baby Product Mompreneur Feature: Kathy Boyanovich of Petite Vigogne. Petite Vigogne, (who we featured in our trend report on Central and South American Influence), sources the finest materials and partners with boutique factories to craft the highest quality bedding, handmade gifts and accessories in timeless, elegant designs.

GG: How did you decide to launch your business? Tell us a little more about Petite Vigogne.
I’ve been in the children’s business for over 10 years and was always passionate about sourcing luxurious fabrics for little ones. Their skin is so sensitive that they should only wear the finest materials available, especially when they are newborns. When my son was born, I wanted him to have the same quality bedding I did, but I couldn’t find it in the U.S. market, so I went to Peru, known for its long staple Pima cotton. Most high-end fashion brands manufacture in Peru. I found high quality linens and a fantastic factory with experience in luxurious baby bedding. When I saw the possibility was real, I decided to offer other parents in the U.S. the opportunity to provide their children with high quality baby bedding and accessories. Babies spend most of their day in bed, so I think they should be the ones with the better sheets at home! Petite Vigogne means little vicuña. Vicuña wool is the finest thread in the world and it’s original from Peru, so we thought the name represented well the concept of our brand.

Petite Vigogne

GG: How do you balance work and family?
I think finding a balance in life after having a baby isn’t easy for a working or a stay-at-home parent. Your life changes and there is obviously less personal time, but the amazing thing is that the “family time” becomes your favorite time. I try to follow a routine, so when I’m with my family I don’t need to be looking at my emails all the time. When you have your own business you need to be available 24/7, but I think that a child deserves 100% attention and love, so keeping a structured day as much as possible is very important for me.

Petite Vigogne Khia Bedding Set

GG: What’s the best part of being a mompreneur?
I think the best part of being a mompreneur is to have the best of both the business and family worlds. I have the satisfaction and challenge of building a business, which is a dream I’ve always had, and, at the same time, I have the flexibility to organize my daily schedule so that I can be a mom every day and be present in my child’s life. The process has been incredibly difficult, as I continuously work many late hours, but his beautiful face when I put him to bed every night is invaluable. Being present in my child’s life when he needs me the most is my most rewarding achievement.

Spotlight on Belly Armor

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Earlier this year, we saw that Belly Armor – the definitive resource for expecting mothers and families to protect their children against the harmful effects of everyday radiation – launched a new line of infant hats with radiation shielding fabric. We couldn’t wait to get our hands on this adorable hat (available in either mouse or rabbit styles) and were incredibly impressed by the protecting features of the product, as well as its adorable, soft and snuggly construction.

Belly Armor Baby Hat Mouse

We knew of the Belly Armor brand from some of their award-winning products like the Belly Blanket but wanted to learn more about the founder and the brand’s overall mission, so we sat down with Aileen Chen Co-Founder & CEO of Belly Armor for this week’s mompreneur spotlight.

Aileen Chen

GG: How did you decide to launch your business? Tell us a little more about Belly Armor.
AC: When I became pregnant with my first child, I was a banking executive who was constantly connected to my various phone devices and laptop. Like most expectant mothers, I researched extensively on how to give my child the best start in life. All sources advised pregnant women to eat healthily, exercise, and avoid toxins like alcohol and certain chemicals – all of which I did diligently. However, one obvious component in my everyday life which concerned me, about which there was little advice, was the radiation-emitting devices that surrounded me at home and at work.

I wondered what their health impacts were. As I researched more into this “everyday radiation” exposure, I was shocked at what I discovered. Increasingly, research was indicating potential health risks from everyday radiation (non-ionizing radiation emitted by sources like cell phones, computers, wireless towers and power lines). Already it was well-accepted that this type of radiation can have a biological impact and there was much confusion and debate around how it impacts our health. The concern is greatest for young children and during pregnancy when DNA replication and cell growth are at their highest rates. Compounding the risk is the exponential growth in wireless technologies over the past decade – today’s children will be exposed to levels of radiation unprecedented in human history. There was an obvious gap between scientific knowledge and public awareness. As the health experts warned, if history is any indication, it can take years and even decades for scientific evidence to conclusively affirm health risks and then translate into policies to safeguard people. Such was the case with tobacco, lead, asbestos, and x-rays.

qRlf8LkQCU-Belly-Blanket-Chic-850x680

My co-founder and I started Belly Armor because we felt compelled to raise awareness about this emerging health issue and to design solutions to help people address it. Since then, we have launched products spanning maternity, nursery and fertility, enabling people to reduce their radiation exposure, while educating about the health issue in the US and our international markets. Our products have won several awards (like Pregnancy & Newborn’s Top Products of 2014 and The Bump’s Best of Baby 2012 and 2015), and are sold in more than 30 countries, a testament that many people around the world have similar concerns about everyday radiation. Belly Armor has been featured by The New York Times, The Doctors Show, People.com amongst others, and is a Trusted Partner of Healthy Child Healthy World, a leading non-profit addressing environmental hazards facing children. It’s the best feeling knowing that we are making a positive impact and empowering people with more knowledge and solutions.

Belly Armor Camisole

GG: How do you balance work and family?
AC: I think work/life balance is very individualistic – everyone defines that balance differently and goes through their own journey to achieve that balance for themselves. But I think what is true for everyone is that striking this balance is a constant work-in-progress as careers evolve, as life happens and priorities shift. I believe a good balance is achievable when one is clear and realistic about what that balance means for them.

One of the benefits of running my own business is having the invaluable flexibility and control over my schedule that I need as a parent of young kids. I am also very blessed to have a husband who is a wonderful hands-on father and a strong supporter of my entrepreneurial pursuits. Day to day, I try to maintain work/life balance with some tactics:

  • Prioritizing the 3-4 most important things (work and personal) I must complete that day, and getting those squared away early in the day. There is less stress and overhang once those are done.
  • Clearly separating time for work and time for family, being okay with that designation, and being fully present when I am in either one.
  • Automating wherever possible and delegating to others the tasks that can be easily or best shared by others so I can dedicate my time for the most important things.
  • Choosing progress over perfection – It is better to get something to a very good point and move on, than to be stuck making something perfect if that marginal improvement will be insignificant. Basically, knowing when to let it go (it is sometimes still easier said than done!).
  • Making time for myself to recharge – This has been, by far, the toughest thing to do, but one that I’m finally finding ways that work for me. I learned that my preference for relaxing and clearing my head is not spa time or a walk in the park. It is doing relatively simple but productive tasks in silence – like cleaning or baking – which feel therapeutic, allow me time to think, and give clear results and a sense of accomplishment (even if it’s a small one).

GG: What’s the best part of being a mompreneur?
AC: I love being able to directly grow and drive the direction of a business that makes positive impact, while having the control and flexibility I need for my family life. Being my own boss has different types of stress and challenges than working for someone else, but the plusses have been immeasurably valuable and rewarding. It wasn’t apparent to me before I started the company, but looking at it now, this is the best type of working model for me at this point in my life.

Trend: Central and South American Influence

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

We have seen the design and style influences of the Central and South Americas trickling in to the mom & baby category over the past six months and the trend does not seem to be slowing down.  Some brands like Land of Nod and Anthropologie offer textiles and decor that hint to the regions – such as the use of the iconic llama.  Other brands like Tea Collection were ahead of the curve with their Fall/Winter collection of children’s clothing completely inspired and directed by the respective aesthetics of Bolivia and Argentina.

As the trend continues, we are seeing cause-driven, philanthropic brands that give back to the countries of manufacture, as well as brands that simply draw from the beauty of a Central or South American culture.  Here, our trend report on what we’ve been spotting:

Clothing

Tea Collection

To inspire Tea’s Fall and Winter 2015 collection, the brand traveled to Argentina and Bolivia. “From the European flavor of Buenos Aires to the indigenous pride of La Paz, our newest collection pays homage to the people of Argentina and Bolivia. The sophisticated style of the gauchos and traditional elegance of Cholitas. The passion of tango musicians to the wild color of las mascaras for Carnaval.”

What we particularly enjoyed about Tea Collection’s approach was the beautiful photography, whimsical illustrations and storytelling that accompanied the line.

Joobles Organic Baby Booties - Icy The Penguin

One to keep an eye on: Joobles on Fair Indigo is an award-winning collection of beautiful fair trade products like the organic baby booties above.  Purchasing Joobles products not only lifts up workers with a living wage and a safe workplace, it also helps support small family-run organic cotton farms in Peru.

Other brands to check-out: Humble Hilo, Nena & Co

Diaper Bags

Nena & Co.

Brands like Nena & Co and Humble Hilo are sourcing directly from the artisans of Guatemala, while also giving back by giving Guatemalan women the income to work from home with their children. Alejandra Hynek, the founder of Nena & Co, has Guatemalan roots herself and was taught about her Mayan heritage by her mother and grandmother, which ultimately inspired her to start the company. Humble Hilo adds another philanthropic layer by allowing customers to decide which humanitarian project to support with their purchase.

Baby Bedding & Accessories

Petite Vigogne

Petite Vigogne is a new high-end brand that sources its fine textiles from Peru. The founder of Petite Vigogne – a mom and native of Peru herself – was inspired to start the company after her difficulty in finding high thread-count Peruvian Pima cotton bedding for newborns in the US.  In addition to luxurious Peruvian Pima cotton, Petite Vigogne sources Vicuña – one of the highest-quality threads in the world – and wonderfully soft baby alpaca, also from Peru, to make perfectly crafted products for lucky newborns worldwide.

Other brands to check out: The Joobles Collection on Fair Indigo

Toys & Other Handcrafts

Finger Puppets, Inc.

Finger Puppets Thumb Things

While not suitable for children under 3 years old, these eco-friendly, finger puppets are perfect for older siblings.  Moms on team Gugu Guru have personally enjoyed using them during story time with our toddlers. Each puppet is handmade by a number of artist collectives from the rural areas of the Peruvian high-plains. Finger Puppets Inc. sources ethically, practices fair trade principles and strives to help these artisans extend their products’ reach.
