Books Before Baby: Suggestions From Our Favorite Writers and Bloggers

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Being pregnant can be totally overwhelming, so it helps to have a slew of books to read to help ease all of your fear and anxiety! We reached out to some of our favorite bloggers and writers and asked them what books helped them prepare for pregnancy, baby, and beyond!

Heather Brooker, host of Motherhood in Hollywood Podcast – book recommendation: Baby Day By Day

“Before Chan was born I had no idea what I was doing. My experience with babies was limited to a few babysitting jobs as a teen and that’s it. So I really felt like I needed a book that gave me practical advice on the day-to-day experience of having a baby. So I read “Baby Day by Day” (DK Publishing) which gives a chronological outline of what to expect from day 1 of your baby’s birth. It was written by a panel of pediatricians, child psychologists, nutritionists, and complementary medicine experts, to provide an unbiased approach to baby care that gives the pros and cons of various approaches, including sleep training, managing crying, and breastfeeding issues. I have such an analytical mind and this was a huge source of comfort for me knowing what to expect and how to handle it.”

Ellie Knaus, host of Atomic Moms Podcast – book recommendation: Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less by Greg McKeown

“I have so many book recommendations based on the dozens of delightful and brilliant parenting experts I have interviewed on Atomic Moms podcast. But the book I would recommend to every single mother is Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less by Greg McKeown. As a new parent, I felt overextended and overwhelmed. The more I dug into my role as mom, the more it felt like there was zero time for pursuing my goals outside of keeping my baby alive. And that was not a happy place for me to be. This book addresses the pressure that we put on ourselves to do it all and encourages us to get clear about our priorities. Once I was able to get intentional about where I was focusing my limited energy and resources, I could feel less guilty about declining the “non-essential” opportunities or distractions that pop up in the day to day. This book has helped me make decisions much more easily and without the guilt trip. I am more present with my child and more focused on making what matters most to me a reality. Toddlers love saying “no”, and it’s time moms say it more often too.”

Jordan Reid, author and blogger, Ramshackle Glam – book recommendation: Belly Laughs by Jenny McCarthy

“I read What To Expect and The Girlfriend’s Guide to Pregnancy, of course, but if I’m being honest the book I enjoyed the most was Belly Laughs by Jenny McCarthy. She’s just kind of…a mess. And it was refreshing to hear someone not know what they were doing (I certainly didn’t), while maintaining a sense of humor about it.”

The Gugu Guru Team highly recommends Jordan Reid’s two parenting books – Ramshackle Glam: The New Mom’s Haphazard Guide to (Almost) Having It All and Carrying On: Style, Beauty, Décor (and More) for the Nervous New Mom; as well as Jordan Reid and Erin Williams’ newest creation, The Big Fat Activity Book for Pregnant People

Jill Simonian, author and parenting expert – book recommendations: The Girlfriend’s Guide to Pregnancy and The Happiest Baby on the Block by Dr. Harvey Karp

“The Girlfriend’s Guide to Pregnancy scared the you-know-what out of me — the way it described all the ways women change, not necessarily for the better, during and after pregnancy. I loved the funny and conversational writing style, but my fear of becoming a mom was amplified after reading that book… which was a partial motivator for me to write my own book addressing all the way women get better and more focused after babies (f-a-b) instead of falling apart. The Happiest Baby on the Block — This book was my FAVORITE! It gave me a road-map for taking control of a newborn and gave detailed instructions for how to comfort babies and control crying by swaddling infants in a specific way. Anyone that tells you swaddling doesn’t work to calm a fussy newborn, by they way, did not properly follow the steps and instructions in this book. The how-to details (and science behind the method) in the book were fascinating and effective. I loved it so much that I continue to compliment and ask author Dr. Harvey Karp about it every time I see him now (we often speak at the same Los Angeles events). I even recommended reading Happiest Baby in my own book too — it’s that life-changing.”

The Gugu Guru Team highly recommends Jill Simonian’s book, The Fab Mom’s Guide: How to Get Over the Bump & Bounce Back Fast After Baby; The FAB Mom’s Guide is a unique, must-read for first-time pregnant moms with practical motivation to tackle the ‘bumps’ of new motherhood — because bouncing back after baby is not all about the body. It is a fast-paced, unfiltered telling of personal choices, tactical lifestyle tips and unexpected celebrity lessons to lead first-time moms on a distinctive path to build CONFIDENCE and RESILIENCE (mind, spirit and a little bit of body) from mid-pregnancy through the first year with baby.

Also seen: Mompreneur Spotlight: FAB Mom Jill Simonian

Amandine Liepmann, founder of Mitz Accessories – book recommendation: Bright from the Start: The Simple, Science-Backed Way to Nurture Your Child’s Developing Mind from Birth to Age 3

“I love this book because it’s all backed by neuroscience and isn’t filled with any sort of parenting guilt/opinions. It’s a very no nonsense approach to what’s worked for child development through studies from around the world.”

Also seen: Gender neural baby style; A Post-Consumer Recycled Baby Registry; Foodie Find, Mitz Children’s Clothing

Paige Wolf, author and activist – book recommendations – The Parent Trip: From High Heels and Parties to Highchairs and Potties and The Second Nine Months: One Woman Tells the REAL Truth About Becoming a Mom. Finally.

The Gugu Guru Team highly recommends Paige’s book, Spit that Out!: The Overly Informed Parent’s Guide to Raising Healthy Kids in the Age of Environmental Guilt

Mama-to-Be Must-Haves

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

With Mother’s Day around the bend (bump?), we didn’t want to forget all of our expectant mamas this week.

The Big Fat Activity Book For Pregnant People, by Jordan Reid and Erin Williams: We’re long-time fans of Ms. Jordan Reid, so when we heard she was writing an activity book for pregnant mamas with her business partner, the brilliant Erin Williams, we knew we had to not only get our hands on the book, but share it with all of you. The Big Fat Activity Book is the must-have book for pregnant millennial moms. It’s a fantastic mix of hilarious puzzles, coloring book pages, and snarky word searches, but also chock full of poignant, moving, and sweet essays. You’re going to laugh, you’re going to cry, and you’ll probably pee a little, but we highly recommend gifting The Big Fat Activity Book to any pregnant mamas you know. [Head to the bottom of the post to win a copy for you AND your BFF!]

skinnytees: If you’re looking for clothing which will easily transition from maternity-wear to everyday wardrobe staples, look no further than skinnytees. Their butter soft shirts are one-size-fits-all (even pregnant mamas!) and are so super stretchy that they will fit your pregnant body, post-partum body and beyond. Their tank tops are perfect for summertime and layering all year round, and their t-shirts and long-sleeved shirts feel like a soft second skin on your new mama body. Plus, they’re ideal for breastfeeding since they can be pulled every which way and not change shape. skinnytees has partnered with Upward Bound House, whose mission is to eliminate homelessness among families with children in Los Angeles by providing housing, support, and advocacy; this Mother’s Day, skinnytees is giving away one skinnytee to a mother in need for every one item purchased from their website until May 9th. They will be hand delivering the skinnytees to the mamas in need for Mother’s Day. [Head to the bottom of the post to win $50 to skinnytees!]

Pearhead Belly Casting Kit: Cherish your special pregnancy journey with Pearhead’s belly casting kit. This non-toxic, 100% baby safe kit includes everything you need to make a mold of your adorable baby bump. This would make such a wonderful Mother’s Day gift for a pregnant mama; have everyone at the baby shower sign the bump! It is 100% baby safe and such a sweet memento of a special time in your life. It may seem as though you’ll be pregnant forever, but trust us, you won’t be, so check out this belly casting kit and cast some memories. [Head to the bottom of the post to win a Peahead Belly Casting Kit!]

Parasol Diapers: One of the most desired baby gifts, which we never give, is always diapers! It’s not really fun to give diapers as a gift, we get it. However, when you’re giving an expectant mom Parasol Diapers, you’re not giving diapers, you’re gifting artwork. The artwork will eventually be shown on your baby’s bottom, but nevertheless, they are gorgeous diapers. These ultra-soft diapers can be ordered in a subscription (now there’s a gift!) so you never have to think twice about heading out for diapers. Parasol Diapers are fragrance free, chlorine free, lotion free, latex free, and hypoallergenic. Furthermore, with the Nordic Swan Eco-label, it certifies that Parasol diapers have fulfilled the most stringent environmental, climate and health criteria available in the industry. [Head to the bottom of the post to win a pack of Parasol Diapers!]

NappieSack: As a pregnant mama, you’re not quite sure what essentials you’re going to need (or not need) when you leave the house with the baby. Luckily, there’s NappieSack! NappieSack is an organizational insert which efficiently transforms any regular handbag into an organized diaper bag. It has 15 pockets, so it holds everything for baby and more. Plus, it’s lightweight and chic, so you could easily use it on its own, too. It’s a great gift for any mom because it lasts long after baby needs diapers; organize your own life with the NappieSack and you’ll never lose your keys again! [Head to the bottom of the post to win a NappieSack!]

Cristina V. Jewelry, Silver Chain Layer Bracelet: It’s not a Mother’s Day gift guide if it doesn’t include some jewelry, and we’re big fans of Cristina V. Cristina, a new mama herself, creates jewelry from the heart; she hand picks every bead, stone, clasp and wire, and creates modern jewelry which is destined to become heirloom pieces. The Silver Chain Layer Bracelet is her most popular one; each bracelet is made up of 2 inches of faceted stones, surrounded on either side by a new signature chain. Bracelets are a wonderful gift for a mom-to-be because she doesn’t have to remove them due to swelling! [Head to the bottom of the post to enter to win a set of 3 chain layer bracelets!]

Bath Bombs, Three Sweet Petites: Three Sweet Petites creates all natural bath and body products. They are created from food-based ingredients- baking soda, citric acid, oils, herbs, flowers, salts, and pure, therapeutic grade essential oils, which means they are safe for everyone. They even offer a New Mama Care Package which consists of one classic Postpartum Bath Bomb and one unbleached, Muslin tea bag filled with our Postpartum Healing Bath Tea. Each item is labeled with the ingredients below as well as instructions for use. The Restore Postpartum Bath Bomb and Tea are a healing herbal blend of Lavender Flower, Red Raspberry Leaf, Plantain Leaf, Yarrow Flower, Calendula Flower, Uva Ursi Leaf, Shepherd’s Purse, and Epsom Salt: ideal for women who have just given birth- vaginally or via cesarean. It may also provide relief from hemorrhoids and other vaginal irritations. This herbal blend is organic and free of dyes and fragrances. What a fantastic gift idea! [Head to the bottom of the post to enter to win a Bath Bomb set!]

Introducing Elizabeth Granados and The House of NOA

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

As parents, we’re always concerned with our baby’s safety, so we strive to make our homes as safe for them as possible. But, we also want our homes to be stylish places for adults, too – which is why we love the concept behind The House of NOA! The House of NOA, founded by mompreneur Elizabeth Granados, creates traditional foam play mats for babies and kids – however, these are crafted with gorgeous designs – which are sure to add style to any room of your house. Elizabeth’s vision was to create a beautiful play mat both mama and baby would love. She teamed up with Illustrator and Designer, Sophia Vincent Guy, to create a unique and original design unlike any other play mat available. When you lay down the foam mat pieces, they create the illusion of a beautiful rug – but this “beautiful rug” is easy to clean and able to withstand the rough and tumble of a toddler! Unlike anything else on the market, the Little Nomad play mats are an elegant addition to any room of your house!

IMG_1351-1 (2)-1

GG: How did you decide to launch your business? Tell us a little more about Little Nomad.
E.G.: The idea for Little Nomad came to me long before I was ever pregnant with my first and only child. In fact, at the time I was struggling with infertility. A friend of mine invited me over to her gorgeous new home and upon opening the front door – the otherwise tastefully decorated family room was covered in tacky foam plats. I began to have visions of how they could be reimagined, but felt that maybe I didn’t have the authority to have an opinion on the matter since I wasn’t a Mother myself. Years later and several months after giving birth to my daughter, the idea resurfaced in my mind, but this time with the confidence I needed to turn the vision from dream to reality. I decided to launch on Kickstarter as a way to validate the product rather than using investor funding because I wanted to get close to my customers from the start. What better way to build a company than to attract a community of tribe members who have your back and believe in what you’re doing?

GG: How do you balance work and family?
E.G.: I started working on Little Nomad when my daughter Taliah was about 6 months old. As an entrepreneur, my mind is always thinking of ideas and ways to change or improve what I’m working on. Sometimes, it can be difficult to turn these thoughts off so that I can focus on my family.

Additionally, I feel like my iPhone can be a terrible distraction – so I try to keep it out of sight when I’m spending time with my daughter. With my husband in residency and working very long hours, my most cherished moments of the day are at about 5:30AM when my daughter gets up and we eat breakfast as a family. In this fast paced world, its important for me to always be mindful of what matters more than any email or Facebook post, my wonderful husband and daughter.

2

GG: What’s the best part of being an mompreneur?
E.G.: When I was nine years old, my Mother developed an educational board game. She took my brother and I with her to Taiwan to meet with manufacturers. I didnt realize the impact that had on me until recently. My Mom taught me to be a fearless entrepreneur, leading by example. I hope to show my daughter that as women, we can achieve any goal we set our minds to. I hope to give her the same gift that my Mom gave me.

UpSpring Baby: Health & Wellness Improvement for Mom

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

This is more of a momprenuers (plural) feature. We speak with Lisa Williamson Rowe, co-founder and CEO of UpSpring Baby – a brand that creates first-of-their-kind products for today’s modern family. UpSpring’s mission is to improve the lives of moms and babies alike and create products that promote health, wellness, and safety. With Mother’s Day around the corner, it seemed like the perfect time to sit down and speak with Lisa about UpSpring’s dedication to health and wellness improvement for mom.

Lisa Rowe of UpSpring

GG: How did you decide to launch your business? Tell us a little more about UpSpring.
LR: We [along with fellow co-founders Julie Jumonville and Dede Woodman] were three mom entrepreneurs that saw unmet needs in the mom & baby market. In 2005, we decided to partner up and create products that met those needs. Our first two products were Milkscreen, an at-home alcohol detection kit for breast milk, and Walking Wings, a unique tool for babies learning to take their first steps.

qh-001_3z

GG: How do you balance work and family?

LR: In my home, we definitely have family focus time, like dinner time.  However, UpSpring has really just become part of our daily life and my family is likewise so much a part of UpSpring. My children and family life have inspired the UpSpring brand in many ways, and have given input and feedback all along the way as we’ve built the company.

Milkscreen
GG: What’s the best part of being a mompreneur?
LR: It is just so rewarding partnering with other mom entrepreneurs and sharing products.  We are now a village and that village includes other mom inventors, pediatricians and medical experts all sharing our dedication to promote wellness.

Some of Gugu Guru’s favorite products from the UpSpring catalog:

  • Milkscreen is an easy-to-use at home test that detects alcohol in breast milk. Because everyone metabolizes alcohol differently, the amount of time it takes for alcohol to leave your breast milk also varies. Now you may never have to pump and dump breast milk again.
  • Milkflow is a concentrated blend of natural herbal extracts including fenugreek and blessed thistle. This powdered drink mix helps you stay hydrated, promotes a healthy breast milk supply and is far more exciting to take than pills.
  • The Wellmom Breast Pillow is designed specifically to support the mother’s breast while breastfeeding. UpSpring’s new pillow is the first of its kind to provide optimal breast placement while nursing, which resolves the tiresome and painful-to-the-wrist act of physically holding the breast. The pillow lifts and comfortably supports the breast, and its stay-in-place cover holds the breast in position for hands-free nursing.
  • C-Panty: C Section Recovery Underwear: C-Panty after cesarean-section panty speeds recovery and slims post baby belly. Compression reduces pain and increases mobility. C-Panty takes care of you so you can take care of baby in comfort.
  • MS Panty: Postpartum Recovery Underwear: Designed for vaginal deliveries, MS-Panty is an after baby panty to speed up getting your pre-body back with just the right amount of compression.
  • Wellmom’s Organic Coconut Nipple Balm expedites healing and moisturizes tender skin with all natural ingredients that are okay for baby to ingest. Wellmom Coconut Nipple Balm does not contain lanolin, petrolatum, or parabens so you don’t have to remove the balm before breastfeeding baby.
  • Shrinkx Hips Ultra is the first and only wrap clinically proven to narrow hips after delivery. Shrinkx Hips works thanks to the hormone Relaxin which loosens pelvic joints and ligaments for childbirth. Relaxin stays in your system up to 8 weeks after delivery. Wearing Shrinkx Hips during this time gently guides hips back to their pre-pregnancy position, or smaller.
  • Shrinkx Belly Postpartum Belly Wrap helps you lose inches faster off your belly and waist after delivery. Triple compression customizes fit so you can look and feel better sooner.

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

PacaPod, founded and designed by a mompreneur, is a revolutionary twist on the modern diaper bag. PacaPod is cleverly designed so that a parent doesn’t have to rifle around their bag to find what they need, but has everything neatly organized in a simple three part system. The outer bag, designed with a stylish parent in mind, has the ability to hold your phone, pens, keys, clip on to your stroller, and be worn on the shoulder or cross-body. Within the bag is an insulated feeder pod, designed to hold bottles, breast milk, or food, and can be easily accessed either within the main compartment, or taken out and clipped onto your stroller independently.

Interior of PacaPod

Every PacaPod also comes with a changing pod, complete with room for diapers, creams, and a changing pad; because all of the diaper necessities are within their own pod, it keeps the rest of the bad clean and free of germs. Pack everything efficiently and neatly into your PacaPod and you’re ready to take on the world with your little ones. PacaPod offers handsome styles for dads, chic styles for moms, and travel bags as well.

Their Spring/Summer collection has just been released and we’re so excited to show you four new PacaPod styles:

PacaPod Richmond herringbone - Set

Richmond: A classic tote bag, in neutral tones with vegan leather trim, makes this bag a perfect accessory for any mom-on-the-go. With a handle made of thick webbing, this bag can be comfortably worn over the shoulder, or easily strapped onto your stroller. This stylish bag can also become your chic purse on those rare moments you leave the house without your baby!

Spotlight on Belly Armor

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Earlier this year, we saw that Belly Armor – the definitive resource for expecting mothers and families to protect their children against the harmful effects of everyday radiation – launched a new line of infant hats with radiation shielding fabric. We couldn’t wait to get our hands on this adorable hat (available in either mouse or rabbit styles) and were incredibly impressed by the protecting features of the product, as well as its adorable, soft and snuggly construction.

Belly Armor Baby Hat Mouse

We knew of the Belly Armor brand from some of their award-winning products like the Belly Blanket but wanted to learn more about the founder and the brand’s overall mission, so we sat down with Aileen Chen Co-Founder & CEO of Belly Armor for this week’s mompreneur spotlight.

Aileen Chen

GG: How did you decide to launch your business? Tell us a little more about Belly Armor.
AC: When I became pregnant with my first child, I was a banking executive who was constantly connected to my various phone devices and laptop. Like most expectant mothers, I researched extensively on how to give my child the best start in life. All sources advised pregnant women to eat healthily, exercise, and avoid toxins like alcohol and certain chemicals – all of which I did diligently. However, one obvious component in my everyday life which concerned me, about which there was little advice, was the radiation-emitting devices that surrounded me at home and at work.

I wondered what their health impacts were. As I researched more into this “everyday radiation” exposure, I was shocked at what I discovered. Increasingly, research was indicating potential health risks from everyday radiation (non-ionizing radiation emitted by sources like cell phones, computers, wireless towers and power lines). Already it was well-accepted that this type of radiation can have a biological impact and there was much confusion and debate around how it impacts our health. The concern is greatest for young children and during pregnancy when DNA replication and cell growth are at their highest rates. Compounding the risk is the exponential growth in wireless technologies over the past decade – today’s children will be exposed to levels of radiation unprecedented in human history. There was an obvious gap between scientific knowledge and public awareness. As the health experts warned, if history is any indication, it can take years and even decades for scientific evidence to conclusively affirm health risks and then translate into policies to safeguard people. Such was the case with tobacco, lead, asbestos, and x-rays.

My co-founder and I started Belly Armor because we felt compelled to raise awareness about this emerging health issue and to design solutions to help people address it. Since then, we have launched products spanning maternity, nursery and fertility, enabling people to reduce their radiation exposure, while educating about the health issue in the US and our international markets. Our products have won several awards (like Pregnancy & Newborn’s Top Products of 2014 and The Bump’s Best of Baby 2012 and 2015), and are sold in more than 30 countries, a testament that many people around the world have similar concerns about everyday radiation. Belly Armor has been featured by The New York Times, The Doctors Show, People.com amongst others, and is a Trusted Partner of Healthy Child Healthy World, a leading non-profit addressing environmental hazards facing children. It’s the best feeling knowing that we are making a positive impact and empowering people with more knowledge and solutions.

GG: How do you balance work and family?
AC: I think work/life balance is very individualistic – everyone defines that balance differently and goes through their own journey to achieve that balance for themselves. But I think what is true for everyone is that striking this balance is a constant work-in-progress as careers evolve, as life happens and priorities shift. I believe a good balance is achievable when one is clear and realistic about what that balance means for them.

One of the benefits of running my own business is having the invaluable flexibility and control over my schedule that I need as a parent of young kids. I am also very blessed to have a husband who is a wonderful hands-on father and a strong supporter of my entrepreneurial pursuits. Day to day, I try to maintain work/life balance with some tactics:

  • Prioritizing the 3-4 most important things (work and personal) I must complete that day, and getting those squared away early in the day. There is less stress and overhang once those are done.
  • Clearly separating time for work and time for family, being okay with that designation, and being fully present when I am in either one.
  • Automating wherever possible and delegating to others the tasks that can be easily or best shared by others so I can dedicate my time for the most important things.
  • Choosing progress over perfection – It is better to get something to a very good point and move on, than to be stuck making something perfect if that marginal improvement will be insignificant. Basically, knowing when to let it go (it is sometimes still easier said than done!).
  • Making time for myself to recharge – This has been, by far, the toughest thing to do, but one that I’m finally finding ways that work for me. I learned that my preference for relaxing and clearing my head is not spa time or a walk in the park. It is doing relatively simple but productive tasks in silence – like cleaning or baking – which feel therapeutic, allow me time to think, and give clear results and a sense of accomplishment (even if it’s a small one).

GG: What’s the best part of being a mompreneur?
AC: I love being able to directly grow and drive the direction of a business that makes positive impact, while having the control and flexibility I need for my family life. Being my own boss has different types of stress and challenges than working for someone else, but the plusses have been immeasurably valuable and rewarding. It wasn’t apparent to me before I started the company, but looking at it now, this is the best type of working model for me at this point in my life.
