Angelique All Day: Maternity Workout Clothing

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

We are so excited to introduce you to pregnant mama, and new guest blogger, actress Angelique Cabral! Angelique is best known for her role as Colleen on CBS’ Life In Pieces, but is no newcomer to the Hollywood scene. She recently found out she is having a little girl this fall and Gugu Guru is thrilled to help her with her registry; Angelique will be guest blogging on Gugu Guru all about pregnancy and new mom life – welcome, Ang!
(PS. The amazing drawing of Angelique above is from Lane Paper Works!)

Hiiiiiiieeeeee! First, you should know a bit about me: I am an actress, currently starring on the CBS sitcom, “Life in Pieces.” I play a quirky, hot mess girl named Colleen, who is based at this point almost entirely on me, ha! As an actress, social media is a huge part of who I am and what I do, and this new invention of #snapchat and #insta-story (I’m old so to me it seems like the cool new thing) has really been a game changer. I find it’s a way to relate directly to my audience and share a bit of my daily life with the world. If you follow me (you can follow Angelique on Insta here), you will see that I’m a hot mess and that I am probably just like you!! I run out of gas! I love coupons! I love rosé #AllllllDay!!!

So I figured why not do this with my pregnancy? The first few months were torture, trying to “hide” it on social media, especially when I drink pretty much whenever I am allowed to or is socially acceptable. And this was the first thing my fans noticed: the absence of wine and/or a margarita in my hand!! Yikes!! But then I came out with my pregnancy in a cute Gender Reveal video that ET did, and the rest is history. I am now free to share every last amazing, magical, disgusting, real detail of my pregnancy! Lucky you!!

Now, the first thing that was a concern for me, as an actress and also as a vain (mid) 30-something who is always on a diet trying to lose those last 5 lbs, was MY WORKOUTS!!! What was I gonna do now that I was pregnant?! I scoured the internet (more on that later, but it’s dangerous and I just spiral deep) and overall it said to take it easy and not do hard core workouts; that it can affect the baby, you can bleed, etc. They basically treat pregnancy as a handicap. The problem with this is that I am very hard core. Like, my whole life, I have jumped from one hard core activity to another: marathons, Kung Fu, Bikram, Hot Vinyasa, cross fit etc. Since college I have worked out 5 to 6 days a week, often double workouts. It makes me feel good but also allows me to eat/drink pretty much whatever i want which let’s be honest is the point (wink!).

So instead of living in fear,  I listened to my doctor and my trainers at Tracy Anderson, and kept doing what I have been doing for the last 3 years: 2 hour workouts in roughly 87 degree rooms with 80% humidity. Hard core!! I also have incorporated intense hiking (my fave is Fryman Canyon in LA) and walking around my neighborhood, at least 5 miles a day.  Cause bottom line, Mommy has to go back to shooting her TV show roughly 2 weeks after giving birth, so I can’t just not workout! It’s simply not an option!! So I’ve kept doing what I’ve been doing, and guess what?! I’m fine! My pregnancy has been perfect! Baby is amazing! And no GD, no preeclampsia, no swelling! And I feel amazing! [editor’s note: this is Angelique’s fitness plan, which she mapped out with her doctor – please consult your doctor if you’re pregnant and would like to know more about working out!]

Except in my workout clothes (womp womp).

Ya. My clothes don’t fit. Like, not at all. Like somehow, overnight, my tight little body just expanded. The first thing that became a real problem, real quick were my boobs. They took on a life of their own. They were HUGE. Like, I’m normally a full A cup or maybe small B, but my overnight by boobs FELL OUT OF MY SPORTS BRAS and I’m looking at a D! and then my rib cage expanded roughly 4 inches so no shirts or tanks fit and I was miserable in my workouts.

Then my growing belly betrayed my workout pants. I thought for sure I would be okay in my LuLuLemons until at least the 3rd trimester. I mean, the whole point of $120 dollar spandex is to stretch right? WRONG. There is, in fact, a maximum they stretch and they were uncomfortable almost immediately, pushing into my abdomen, making any workout torture.

Ingrid and Isabel Tank Top + Leggings

But then, miracle of all miracles,  I discovered my saving graces, Belly Bandit, Boob, Bravado Designs, and Ingrid and Isabel. Against my will, I gave in to “maternity” workout gear, and haven’t looked back.

Here’s the 411 on bras: Bravado Ballet Bra and Body Silk Seamless Yoga Nursing Bra are my fave for just life. They are comfy and make you feel feminine and human and not like an overstuffed cow.  I am obsessed with the Boob Designs sports/nursing bra ’cause let me tell you, it keeps the girls IN and TIGHT and gives you great cleavage. Boob also has an amazing long spandex nursing tank top that I wear almost every day. Even though I’m not nursing yet, it fits better than anything I’ve found and makes me feel cute during my workouts, which let’s be honest, is why we all workout, ha!!

(left) Ingrid and Isabel Pants, (right) Boob Designs Tank Top and Belly Bandit Leggings

Now for leggings: Belly Bandit leggings are my dream. They are supportive and cool and comfy for daily wear, and makes my growing belly feel and look so cute!! For my hard core workouts, I love Ingrid and Isabel workout leggings, they are thicker and really hold you in while doing cardio, and they have this cute V in the back that is sexy and fun! I literally get compliments on them every time I wear them. They also have this fold down option if you want your belly to be on display so you can show it off. But during my workouts I prefer to keep it up and protect my belly. Ingrid and Isabel also has a full line of tanks and dresses that I have been living in, even to events and red carpets! (Sidenote: I’m a big fan of “body con” during pregnancy, it shows off you bump and makes you look less humungous if you wear tight fitting clothes vs. baggy stuff).

So, there ya go. My first blog!! That wasn’t so bad!!! I hope it was fun and helpful to y’all since let’s be honest, we are all just doing our best, trying to figure our growing bodies out. I’m 27 weeks in, and every day there are new surprises and I can’t wait to share them all with you. It really helps being able to chat it out, and I’m excited to hear from you! Tweet me or tag me on insta and tell me whatcha think of my workout picks, and tell me your faves!
Til next time!

Baby Style Find: Happer Baby Bibs + Towels

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

-Sponsored Post-

When the Gugu Guru team came across Happer Baby, and their bibs and towels, we knew we wanted to share their cuteness with everyone. It’s no shocker that Happer Baby was started by parents, as the products are all perfectly designed for ease, efficiency, comfortability, and of course – to make a good baby photo. Babies need things, like bibs and towels, and Happer has designed these essential baby items with adorable designs, and the utmost attention to practical details.

Happer Baby Hooded Baby Towel Blue Raccoon; Happer Baby Hooded Baby Towel Yellow Sheep

The hooded bath towels are made of 100% soft absorbent terry cotton, and will make your baby feel warm, cozy and dry after each bath. We’re a big fan of hooded towels, because it helps keep baby and toddler’s heads warm after a bath – especially in winter weather (however, this can also be used by the pool in summer and the hood is great for wrangling wet hair!). One of the main reasons we loved these towels was their size! It can sometimes feel silly to buy a bunch of cute hooded towels for a newborn, only to find that they grow out of them within a week; but, these Happer Hooded Towels are 31×35 inches, which means it will fit newborns, infants and toddlers. Plus, the large size is great to wrap them up and keep them warm. These make a perfect baby shower gift, as they are practical, adorable, and easy to ship directly from Amazon!

Happer Baby Bandana Drool Bibs, Western; Happer Baby Bandana Drool Bibs, Maritime

When it comes to bandana bibs, it’s important to find ones that are not only (obvi) cute, but also super comfortable on baby, and super absorbent, too. This is not always easy to find, yet, Happer Baby seems to hit the mark on all accounts. Made of 100% absorbent organic cotton on the front and 100% polyester fleece on the back, these are sure to absorb all the drool and spit up from your little one, making your life so much easier because won’t have to change their clothes a hundred times a day! We all know how much teething babies drool, and if the drool-soaked clothing sits too long on sensitive skin, it can cause a rash. It’s important to have a handy bib to absorb all the wetness.

We’re loving that the Happer Baby Bib Bandanas are adjustable as well. The adjustable snaps, instead of Velcro, don’t irritate babies’ skin or cause allergic reactions, plus, they are hard for babies to undo and take off. The bib bandanas will fit babies ages 3-24 months. The styles and designs are all gorgeous, with vivid colors and intricate details. They really don’t look like bibs, but more like fashion accessories! Each set (western and maritime) comes with four different bibs, so you don’t have to do the laundry everyday. They all match in their own way, so if you’re traveling, you can simply bring a set with you.

These bibs make a wonderful baby shower gift. Happer Baby also makes red and blue newborn caps, so you can send matching hats and bibs to anyone to celebrate a new baby. Also, an ideal gift for twins, as there are 4 in each set of bibs. The bibs are ideal for year round use, easily washable, and utterly adorable.

Nursery Inspiration: Red, White, and Blue

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

With Fourth of July coming up, we wanted to share some design inspiration for Red, White, and Blue nurseries. Red, white, and blue nurseries often tend to lean towards Americana, nautical, stars & stripes, even a farm theme. We rounded up basic nursery essentials which fit the red, white, and blue theme – and a few special accessories, too!

Want to see more nursery inspo posts? Check out Gray Nursery Ideas, Gender Neutral Nursery, Botanical Nursery; Buffalo Plaid Nursery Inspiration; Princess Bride Inspired Nursery

Brooklyn Born Sheets, Shibori, Navy/White: Brooklyn Born Sheets are 100% GOTS certified organic cotton sateen and have 300 thread-count, making it a super soft sleep surface for baby. We love these blue sheets with some detail!

Ubbi Diaper Pail, red: An Ubbi Diaper Pail is a must have for any nursery; with a modern look, you can add efficiency with an essential nursery item to your nursery decor and not break from the theme of the nursery’s style. The Ubbi Diaper Pail holds up to 55 diapers, and with its powder-coated steel interior, it keeps smells far, far away – plus, it comes in 13 colors and has a child lock – perfect! This bright red pail is sure to add pizzaz to any nursery.

Crane Humidifer, white: We have posted many times about why Crane Humidifiers are a nursery essential, so we had to include a white Crane Drop Humidifier for a red, white, and blue nursery. Humidifiers are especially important for Newborns because they are Obligate Nasal Breathers, breathing only through their tiny noses for their first 4 – 6 months. Any congestion can make breathing, feeding, and sleeping incredibly difficult for your little one. Why not grab this nursery essential in white to match your nursery?

Lorena Canals American Flag Rug: We can’t do a red, white, and blue nursery roundup and not include this gorgeous (and machine washable!) Lorena Canals American Flag Rug. If you’re going for more of a stars theme, check out their navy and white star rug, too.

Also seen: Cause-driven Baby Registry; Spring Cleaning Must Haves; Nursery Style, Botanical Theme; Endless Summer Registry Picks; Gender Neutral Nursery Style

Oliver + Kit Reversible Cuddle Blanket: Oliver + Kit crib reversible bamboo cuddle blankets are made from the highest quality bamboo blend of 70% bamboo rayon and 30% cotton blend for the durability of cotton and the luxurious softness of bamboo.  Our cuddle blankets are the perfect way to wrap your little one in cozy comfort. Our plushest blanket has eight comfy layers that are ultra breathable while giving babies, and toddlers soothing extra weight for added security.  Our generously sized quilts are 47″ x 47″, big enough to grow with your child.

Lorena Canals Star Pillows: We are huge fans of Lorena Canals’ pillows because they are easily washable at home, in your regular washing machine – you don’t even need to take out the filler! Plus, they are handmade by artisans from non-toxic dyes and 100% natural cotton. Grab a red, white, and blue star for your Americana nursery.

Shop Sugar Babies, Navy Pinstripe Pouf: Great for kicking your feet up while feeding your baby in the nursery and converts into an extra seat in the nursery, too. Measures 15″ x 20″ x 19″ and weighs approx. 5 lbs. 100% cotton canvas cover with zipper bottom for removal and wash.

Carousel Designs Red Chevron Changing Pad Cover: Carousel Designs changing pad covers are made with 100% certified organic cotton fibers, which are printed in the USA with certified organic inks. Both the cotton and the inks are third party GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified. Each changing pad cover is a woven 200 thread count fabric that is perfect for your baby girl or baby boy. We love this red chevron changing pad cover, because the red fits the nursery theme, and is still modern with the chevron pattern!

Other fun nursery accessories for your red, white, and blue nursery:

  • Nautical Baby Blanket from BizyBelle
  • Navy Blue Personalized Pillow (such a cute gift idea) from Caroline Randall Made
  • White Wooden Growth Chart from Shop White Loft (ideal for a rustic nursery, too); also seen in our gray nursery inspiration
  • Blue Chevron Folding Hamper
  • Red, White, and Blue Striped Curtains

Toddler Tuesday: Robeez First Kicks Collection

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

This installation of Toddler Tuesday – our new feature that helps moms navigate the transition from infant mom to toddler mom – turns the focus to toddler summer style!

My daughter’s first “real” shoes were a pair of super cute brown suede Robeez boots with fringe. We got compliments every time she wore them, so imagine my delight scrolling through Instagram and landing on THE CUTEST little pink ballet flats ever from the new Robeez First Kicks Collection.

Approved by the American Podiatric Medical Association, the First Kicks Collection is perfect for new walkers and seasoned walkers alike. Made of real leather, these stylish shoes (think espadrilles, oxfords and ballet flats) have a shoe-like fit and cushioned insole with a soft sole suede bottom. Because of the soft suede sole – which gives newer walkers the flexibility their feet need – these shoes are definitely for indoor and light outdoor use. We love our Ellie Espadrilles and Rachel Ballet Flats for days spent babywearing or exploring in the stroller, when there will be some walking outside, but not a ton.

Bonus: If you’re budget-conscious like me and like to buy shoes with “room to grow”, you’ll love the elasticized back of the shoes. It keeps the shoes on without slipping, even when there’s a bit of extra room. It also lets your toddler be an active participant in putting on their shoes – and you know how much toddlers love to do everything themselves!

Check out the entire collection, and more: Robeez.

Insurance eligibility:

In most cases, new mothers are covered for a free breast pump through insurance anywhere from as soon as the baby is born up to 1 year after birth (i.e. throughout their breastfeeding journey). This is a good rule of thumb to go by; however the exact time period depends on your particular insurance plan.

Navigating Aeroflow’s website:

Keep in mind that when you visit the website, you will first need to fill out the Qualify through Insurance form before you can shop for breast pumps that are eligible under your specific insurance plan. While shopping as a guest, you might notice that certain items are not available for purchase. These items are only applicable to specific insurance plans and require the user to first fill out the Qualify form before they are eligible for certain breast pumps through insurance. Upon completing the form, you will be able to log in to the site and shop a curated selection specific to your insurance benefits. If you would like help navigating the store, our Breastpump Specialists are here to assist you! We do everything we can to help you find the best breast pump for your needs and lifestyle.

Steps to take:

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

-Sponsored Post-

With summer heating up, we wanted to share some great style gift ideas for baby showers this summer. Did you know it’s now a very popular trend to gift your best mom friend with a shower dress for her baby shower? Check out the ideas below and don’t forget to add these to your registry, too!

Mayarya is known for their cutting edge fashion designs for maternity and nursing wear. Made with soft, luxurious fabrics sourced from the best suppliers in the world, Mayarya collections offer investment pieces that are comfortable yet modern in design for women to enjoy before, during and after pregnancy. Founded by a mother (of course), Reika Kato Shetty, she uses her attention to fine details that are intrinsic to her Japanese background, experience of working for trendsetting boutiques in New York and Los Angeles to create unique pieces that every expectant mother is going to find refreshing.

We’re currently loving these four looks:

  • Tropical Leaf Maternity and Nursing Romper (left): Keep it playful in this tropical romper. The summery print is exclusively made by British designer Victoria Leigh. It features added popper buttons for ease of taking it on and off – and of course for nursing ability. Whether you have a bump or not, the elasticated waist and drawstring make it easy to adjust.
  • Eva Cape Maternity Dress (second from left): This limited edition dress is a sophisticated statement piece. Feel completely chic as the emerald green material drapes over your shoulders. The light material will keep you feeling fantastically fresh during pregnancy and even post bump.
  • Carmen Racerback Maternity and Nursing Dress (third from left): The little black number that all women need in their closet. A limited edition piece that’s easily styled and immensely flattering. The ruches down the side ensure a sleek silhouette and instant confidence. What makes this dress even more impressive is the discreet nursing access. There’s a hidden nursing cover inside the stretchy neckline that makes the process as seamless as possible.
  • Dikla Off the Shoulder Maternity and Nursing Dress (right): This limited edition dress flows in all the right ways, giving it that dramatic charm. It’s everything you want when it comes to femininity. The material is silky smooth and the elasticated top makes nursing a breeze. Just adjust the belt to suit your needs, bump or not.
