Take Time for You: Self-Care Tips for Moms

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Whether you are parenting, expecting, trying to conceive, or simply surviving the Pandemic, it’s been rough. In the chaos that is life, your self-care routine may have been destroyed. We are here to help pick up the pieces! Check out some great tips on treating yourself to the best Valentine’s Day gift – some self-care for you, mom!

Take Care of your Skin

self-care

Sometimes it’s as simple as washing your face and putting on some lotion to start the day off right. Wherever your skin routine may be right now, keep it simple! We are all for the multi-purpose products that will help us feel fresh. However, if it’s not an easy routine, it’ll be over before it starts. A simple face soap and moisturizer is a great place to start. Add in some chapstick and you’re taking care of your lips, too!

Pregnant? Postpartum? You may notice some changes in your skin as your hormone levels fluctuate. We are always on the lookout for products that are safe, effective, and easy. Check out some of our favorites from Earth Mama and Matrescence.

Take Care of your Body

self-care for mom

Taking care of your body comes from all angles. What you eat/drink, wear, and do can all be part of body care. Eating healthy can be tough, especially when you have a new baby. Often, we hear from moms who are “too busy to eat.” Without proper nourishment, it’s hard to take care of your little one. Meal planning is great, and prepared healthy foods are even better. Territory Foods has excellent meal options for busy families.

Investing in a couple of key clothing pieces to help you feel comfy and put together is also key. A comfortable pair of pants (leggings, jeans, sweatpants, etc.) and a simple cozy top will make all the difference, especially as you navigate a chill in the air. Layering is an easy way to put together any outfit with your changing body. Pro-tip: Throw on a cute piece of earrings and you’ve got a whole outfit! Kindred Bravely and Belly Bandit both have some excellent pieces.

Take Care of your Mind

self-care for mom

We all love our kids, but sometimes you might need to take a break! Our moms say that taking a little ‘me’ time in the shower, walking around the block, or taking a 20-minute drive is a perfect way to escape some of the stress. Start journaling, meditating, or exercise to give yourself a reset. Give yourself the space to think about nothing for a certain amount of time each day. You cannot pour from an empty glass! Time to prioritize some self-care, Mom!

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Looking for the best baby bathtub for your little one? We’ve got you covered. Here’s a roundup of our top 5 baby bathtubs ready to get your little one squeaky clean.

Boon Naked 2-Position Collapsible Bathtub

The Boon Naked will grow with your little one from newborn to toddler. The collapsible design of this tub allows you to have a newborn in the recline position or accommodate your toddler to sit up and splash around. When bathtime is over, you can completely collapse the tub and store it flat or by hanging it to dry.

Lavelu Lounger Baby Sink Bath Insert

Lavelu Lounger

Our go-to recommendation for minimalist families, we love how easy the Lavelu Lounger is for those earliest bath days. Simply stick the lounger directly into your sink (it fit nearly every sink we tested) and baby will stay warm, cozy, and fully supported. Hang it to dry and upcycle to the tub as a bath pillow for mom when baby no longer needs.

Read more about the Lavelu Lounger here.

The First Years Sure Comfort Deluxe Tub

The First Years Newborn to Toddler Tub includes a mesh sling that provides better support for smaller babies. Once baby starts to get a little bigger they can go into the deep ergonomic tub directly and there is plenty of space for your baby up to 25 pounds to sit up and splash. Kudos to Kudos Diapers!

by Abby Ludwig Leave a Comment

We are always on the search for great product lines at Gugu Guru. Especially products that parents use constantly. Ask any Mom what her favorite diaper is and it’s likely she’ll rattle off multiple brands. Some are great for newborns, some are a better fit for chunky thighs, and others are great for big bellies. Some are thick and soft, some are thin but surprisingly absorbent. Why can’t one diaper do it all?!

I think we’ve found one! Kudos Diapers are 100% plant-based cotton, helping little ones with sensitive skin stay rash-free. Great for eczema-prone skin, these fragrance-free diapers have no extra ‘yucks!’ They are absorbent, thick without being bulky, and fit well. Even their packaging is recyclable and sustainably sourced. Read below to see how moms from our Gugu Village feel about Kudos!

Sarah

I LOVE the feel of the Kudos diapers! They are made with cotton and you can tell in the softness. The side tabs also feel much sturdier and stretchy and would be very hard to pull off.

Our 9lb 7 week old wears NB in Huggies and the size 1 fit well, so definitely look at the size chart when ordering. These diapers are very absorbent without the risk of leaking inner material onto your baby if they get overly full.

Joanie

These diapers fit my baby so well! I’ve used them overnight (12 hours) and have no problems with leaks. I love that they are extra long in the front and back – hold in lots of liquid for my son overnight and also prevent blowouts in the back. The sizing runs slightly larger than the Huggies and Kirkland diapers that I normally use.

Some Major Pros:

-You can really feel the difference [in the fabric] when you’re comparing to Kirkland and Huggies. The material feels less plasticky and much more breathable.

-Knowing that I dispose of 6-10 diapers per day and they can take up to 500 years to decompose, I really wanted to find a good, eco-friendly diaper! The patterns

-Aesthetically, the patterns are absolutely adorable!

-I’ve tried so many diapers and I’m happy to find something that is so absorbent it works for 12+ hours with my son.

Jessica

I’ve tried a few different diaper brands, but I must say that these Kudos diapers are so soft compared to others. I like the fact the company uses plant-based materials to make the diapers. The waist band is extremely stretchy and they seemed to fit my little one very comfortably. Theses diapers are super absorbent and my little one did not have any leaks or blow outs while wearing them. I also like the different patterns and designs that comes on the diapers. On the other hand, I did notice the entire pack of white diapers I received contained small black specks on the inside of the diapers. I attempted to rub them off but they do not come off. Overall, the diapers are good. I had zero leaks and zero blow outs which is a win for me.

Zoe

I really like the idea of cotton diapers, so I was excited to try these diapers out. Upon receiving and testing them for the course of about 2 weeks, I thought the cotton felt nice and breathable on her skin for both daytime and overnight wear. Their absorbency was on par with other diaper brands we use. I felt good about the environmental implications of cotton vs other materials from other diapers. The prints were cute, fun and added some pizazz which I liked.

During the course of testing these, my baby’s weight ranged from about 8.5 to 9 pounds, so we tested out the size 1 diaper. I felt it fit pretty true to size for a size 1 contrary to being told they run small. She wears size 1 in Huggies and Pampers. I did feel that the elastic around her leg could be a little more taught in order to really “seal” around her legs. I also personally like when the Velcro tabs are not white (ex: Pampers has yellow tabs) or when there is an indication of front vs back so that it is easy to identify the front when changing diapers in limited light for night changes.

Annie

My kids have the most sensitive skin. We are constantly at the dermatologist trying new creams, ointments, etc. to keep their eczema at bay. I was excited to try the Kudos diapers as they 100% cotton, soft, and fragrance-free. I have often run into issues with other ‘clean’ diapers as they are stiff and rough against my littles skin. Not Kudos diapers! They felt a little thin when I first took them out of the packaging, but they easily kept leaks at bay. My toddler (20 months) was able to move around without any extra diaper bulk and didn’t have any issues with the absorbency. I loved that they didn’t take up as much space in the drawer, so I could fit the full pack in our dresser.

Thanks to Kudos for letting some of our moms test your great product!

Postpartum Secrets: C-Section Recovery Must-Haves

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Hey, everyone! It’s Monica, founder of Gugu Guru.  I wanted to write the introduction to this post because I have had personal experience with an unexpected c-section. In my first pregnancy, I walked three miles almost every day. I couldn’t wait for the huffing and puffing of labor and read up daily on various books and articles covering what I could do during pregnancy to prepare for a smooth delivery.  Then when I went in for a regular check-up one day after my due date, the doctor realized that my son was in distress and I was rushed in for an emergency c-section. I was scared, I felt like I had failed somehow – all sorts of emotions. Unfortunately, sometimes things don’t go according to plan and we are forced to roll with it. If you’re reading this because you’re one of those moms who didn’t have it go to plan, I just wanted to say chin up, it’s going to be ok and here are some product suggestions that will hopefully help you recover more comfortably and quickly, while you soak up all the wonderfulness of new mommyhood.

xo Monica

Best Budget Baby Registry Must Haves

by Gugu Guru 1 Comment

Is a Budget Baby Registry really possible? There’s no question that having a baby is going to take a little funding.  The good news is that, although there are certain items that you really shouldn’t get as hand-me-downs (e.g., car seats) – you don’t have to splurge for high-quality items.  There are many budget baby registry finds on the market today, including stylish clothing and gear that won’t break the bank.  Here are our picks for your best budget baby registry, keeping your wallet in mind.

Budget Baby Registry: Gear & On The Go

Best Budget Baby Carrier

We often recommend babywearing, which has wonderful benefits aside from the hands-free aspect. One of our favorite stylish, yet affordable brands on the market is Infantino. This Infantino Flip Advanced 4-in-1 Convertible Carrier ($29.99) grows with your child; suitable for babies 8 to 32lbs. It offers four ways to carry: newborn facing in, older baby facing in, facing out, and back carry. For a budget-friendly wrap-style carrier (without the difficulty of a wrap), we also LOVE the Baby K’tan ($59.95) carrier.

Best Budget Stroller

Baby Trend Snap N Go EX Universal Infant Car Seat Carrier is one of our top recommendations for families on a budget. The Snap N Go turns your infant car seat (we like Graco’s infant car seats) into a travel stroller so you don’t need to have a whole stroller system.  However, when baby grows out of the infant car seat, you’ll need a high-quality lightweight stroller like our favorites – the Summer Infant 3Dlite Convenience Stroller or the super sleek Larktale chit chat.

Looking for the convenience of a travel system? Graco has you covered!

Lastly, in the early stages of baby, you’re going to have to tote around a lot of stuff. We love the Baby K’tan as our stylish value find.  Take a look here to read what some real moms had to say about Baby K’tans hands-free diaper bags.

Budget Baby Registry: Bedroom/Nursery

One of the 2016 safe sleep recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is for infants to share their parents’ bedroom for at least the first six months and, optimally, for the first year of life, based on the latest evidence. So, it’s likely you’ll need a sleeping arrangement for your bedroom. If you’re looking to adhere to AAP guidelines, the super portable, affordable, and safe-sleep approved BRICA Fold N’ Go Travel Bassinet is a dream for your wallet. Do note, it’s only meant for use up to 6 months and, you’ll likely have to put the bassinet on the floor, which may not be practical for a number of reasons (e.g., frequent night-time nursing, pets, etc.) For something sleep-approved that requires less bending over and also grows with your child, go with the Graco Pack ‘n Play On The Go Playard with bassinet.

Best Budget Cribs

You’ll need a crib mattress of course and our budget pick is and always has been the Safety 1st Heavenly Dreams White Crib Mattress. Our general go-to brand for high-quality cribs that won’t break the bank is DaVinci. The Jenny Lind crib shown above will add great style to your nursery without breaking the bank. Ikea also has excellent crib options. Cribs are really a blank canvas regardless – and a great crib sheet can add that pizazz you need. We love the multi-packs by Peanutshell or Ely’s & Co.

moonjax® Swaddle Blanket 3-Pack Moon, Stardust, Constellation

For use inside or outside of the nursery, do NOT forget some muslin swaddle blankets, which have multiple uses beyond just swaddling.  Parents just rave about these 100% organic swaddle blankets from Moonjax said to be among the softest of their kind out there.  While they are on the pricier side, the multi-pack gets you a great deal on something you’ll use all the time.

Best Budget Swaddles

Wearable swaddles like the Swaddle Me Original swaddles are also a great, budget-conscious option. Swaddles create a cozy, womb-like feeling for baby and prevent the startle reflex that can wake your newborn infant. A three pack of these costs around $35 or less

Wubbanub Soft Toy and Infant Pacifier

While the wildly popular Wubbanub may be described by some as pricey and hardly fit for a budget baby registry, we’ve added it for two reasons: 1. it’s a 2-in-1 product (pacifier + lovie) so we feel that this justifies a higher price tag and 2. if you’re having a shower, it’s great to register for this item as a gift. An important thing to note about Wubbanubs, due to safe sleep recommendations, reserve the Wubbanub for supervised snoozing only.

Nanobebe flexy pacifiers are an excellent choice for sleep!

Best Budget Baby Monitor

Since the launch of Gugu Guru in 2015, the VTech DM221 Safe & Sound Digital Audio Baby Monitor has remained our leading budget baby monitor recommendation across the board. If you’re looking for a video monitor, we would recommend the Summer Infant Glimpse Video Baby Monitor as our budget video monitor pick coming in at less than $100.

Best Budget Humidifier

You’ll need a cool mist humidifier for your home. It will help immensely when baby catches the sniffles and even when breastfeeding! We have always been huge fans of Crane USA and their excellent humidifiers.

Budget Baby Registry: Layette

Best Budget Baby Layette

Generally people love to gift clothing, so try to register for specific items that you know you’ll love. We always recommend adding pajamas in a variety of sizes and some basics that you know you’ll use. Check out our post on newborn clothing necessities Clothing is also something that you can easily score as hand-me-downs or from BST (Buy/Sell/ Trade) groups on Facebook. You’ll want to get lots of onesies and zippered pajamas (snaps are terrible in the middle of the night.) To make sure you have some of the basics covered, you can also register for an economical layette set like this Essential Newborn Baby Layette Set from SpaSilk. Here’s a budget tip – go gender neutral for clothes.  If you plan to have more babies, you can re-use what you have and if you don’t plan on having another, you can trade or sell gender-neutral items more easily.

Budget Baby Registry: Feeding

Regardless of how you plan to feed your baby, you’ll definitely need some burp cloths. One of the most popular burp cloths is actually labeled as a diaper! The Gerber Birdseye 3-Ply Prefold Cloth Diaper. A pack of 10 will cost you less than $20.

Though it’s certainly not the least expensive pillow on the market, nursing moms love the My Brest Friend Original Nursing Pillow, which comes in a variety of colors and styles. You’ll also want to pick up some nursing pads as well. For mothers who are not exclusively breastfeeding, the Evenflo Balance + Bottles are an excellent high-quality budget choice. Parents love the angled bottle for reducing gas and ease of use. Don’t forget a bottle brush too.

As baby starts solids and graduates to self-feeding, the Fisher-Price Spacesaver High Chair is our top budget choice. In fact, Gugu Guru’s founder, Monica, used this chair for her two babes. For baby’s adventures dining in, you’ll also need soft-tip infant spoons, suction bowls and bibs (note: there are drool bibs and there are feeding bibs, we’re speaking of the latter.)

Budget Baby Registry: Bath & Potty

Here’s the truth about diapers: you may have to try a few brands before you figure out what works best.  It’s not unusual that one diaper brand is deemed as superior and leak proof by one parent, and that same brand is labeled as inferior by another.  It’s also not unusual to switch along the way.

Best Budget Diapers

Huggies Little Snugglers, Pampers Swaddlers, and Luvs are often loved by many parents. Also, don’t look past your bulk buy stores (Costco and Sam’s Club both have excellent diaper options). Target also has an excellent line of diapers, which many parents swear by! took the cake. Budget hint: try Amazon’s Subscribe & Save service for 5% off diapers and also wipes.

On the Go Gear for Eco-friendly Families

by Abby Ludwig Leave a Comment

Your life is busy and full of complicated stuff. Your baby gear should be simple. It should be easy. Most importantly, it should be something you love to use. When we come across excellent products, we need to ‘shout it from the rooftop!’ Bumbleride strollers are our go-to recommendation when working with eco-friendly families. Born in San Diego, Bumbleride’s stroller line can do it all. They are all-terrain strollers, not too heavy, and designed for all of life’s adventures.

While all of this is great, our favorite part about the brand is their dedication to the materials. They put great pride in using recycled materials and production processes that will create the safest strollers for your littles. Pair with some of our other top Eco-Friendly (and Affordable) finds and you’ve got all your basics covered.

Want to learn more? Read about their materials here and their manufacturing processes here. Cheers to Bumbleride for focusing on sustainability!

Bumbleride Era

One of our top recommended strollers at Gugu Guru, Era changed the game for eco-friendly families. With its reversible seat, quick compact fold, and small footprint, this is the perfect stroller choice for city, suburbs, or country! The stroller is newborn compatible (on it’s deepest recline or with a car seat adapter) and has excellent storage. Plus it’s air-filled tires (and included air pump) will help push through anything. This stroller is truly one of a kind!

Don’t take our word for it!

See what Brittany Littleton (Mom of 3 & Vegan Restauranteur) had to say:
“Over the past few years, sustainability has become trendy. This would be great, except that so much of what is marketed as “eco-friendly” isn’t at all. Especially in the baby market, there is SO MUCH PLASTIC WASTE. If you want something high end AND kind to the planet? Forget about it. Until @bumbleride — they have a true mission of sustainability with documented proof. They are constantly seeking to improve and being transparent about their operations. The fact that this fabric is made fully from recycled plastic water bottles makes my heart happy. I have hope we can create a beautiful future for our little ones.”

Bumbleride Indie

This do it all single stroller is a great choice for families who like to constantly be on the move. Great for unpaved trails, sidewalks, grass, and more, the Indie can push over anything. Its all-wheel suspension, air-filled tires will give you an excellent push and it will hold your little one up to 55 lbs. This stroller can take a car seat and reclines flat enough to be newborn compatible, making it a perfect option from day 1. Great for a day at the beach or a walk to the park!

Eco-friendly Family with multiples? Looking for a great double option for your toddler + baby? Check out the Indie Twin, which offers all of the same great features noted above, but with two seats! And for those twin moms? Yes! It will take 2 car seats!

Bumbleride Speed

Active and eco-minded? Bumbleride has you covered! Their Speed stroller can run, walk, and jog with you through every errand and activity. One of the lightest-weight jogging strollers on the market, the Speed will double as your everyday stroller. With it’s large wheels and huge canopy, this stroller is the perfect choice for your little ones up to 65 lbs. Just make sure not to run with your little one until cleared by your pediatrician and Bumbleride will take care of the rest.
