Best Registry Items for a Summer Baby

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Summer Baby Must Haves and Warm Weather Newborn Essentials

Calling all very-soon-to-be-moms and mamas entering their first summer with a baby! If you’re due to have a baby this summer, or you’ve recently delivered, then you’ll need some special baby gear and goods to make sure your little one is properly protected, safe and pampered during the warmer months. Overheating and sunburn are serious safety issues for summer babies, especially newborns. This is the season most of us savor. A new baby shouldn’t keep you from having a little fun this summer! Here are our picks for the best beat-the-heat and summer-ready items for moms of summer babies. Don’t forget to check out our ultimate list of what to put on your baby registry.

Infant Optics Baby Monitor | Gugu Guru

Summer Baby Must-Haves #1: The Baby Monitor

While baby is napping is the perfect time to get outside in the backyard or front porch and enjoy some of that fresh summer air. Just make sure you have a good baby monitor by your side. The Infant Optics DX-R Video Baby Monitor with Interchangeable Optical Lens takes baby watching to new high-tech heights. You can customize viewing angle and zoom, all remotely. Plus the sound-activated LED full color display and long-life battery guarantees you feel safe at all times when baby is snoozing in the other room.

Summer Baby Must-Haves #2: A Baby Sun Blanket

Pediatricians don’t recommended applying sunscreen to babies under 6 months old. So what’s a summer time mom to do? Wrap your little one up in the Green Sprouts Breathable Sun Blanket, which doubles as a car seat canopy. This super-soft protective blankie is OEKO-TEX® certified for your baby’s health and safety.

summer baby must haves Carter's Sleeveless Onesies

Summer Baby Must-Haves #3: Sleeveless Onesies

When the temperature rises, your baby is going to want nothing to do with some frilly outfit with complicated layers. Buy sleeveless onesies in bulk for summer time. Carter’s Sleeveless Onesies are classics. They’re durable, unisex, comfy and easy on the wallet. Plus your baby will look super-cute!

Summer Baby Must-Haves #4: Baby Sunglasses

Eye protection from the sun is no joke for any age (the delicate eye region is a common spot for skin cancer to develop). Keep baby’s eyes protected and reduce the glare of the sun with a pair of UV-protective shades made for babies. We love these sunglasses, which are made from flexible silicone, feature UV400 polarized, shatterproof lenses and a strap to keep them in place. Plus they’ll make baby look super-cool!

Summer Baby Must Haves #5: Baby Swim Clothes

It might some time before your baby actually does the breaststroke, but chances are you’ll still want to bring your little one to the beach or pool this summer. A swim diaper and sun hat is a must for any child during the summer. Plus you’ll also need a rash guard. We love anything and everything from Green Sprouts, including their awesome swim diapers, rash guards and sun-protective hats. Available in many adorable styles.

Summer Baby Must Haves #6: Outdoor Blanket

From picnics in the park to outdoor music festivals, chances are you’ll be spending loads of time sitting on the ground this summer. You’ll want something safe, water-resistant and durable to place baby on top of. Try the ultra-portable JJ Cole Outdoor Blanket.

7 Best Baby Shower Menu Ideas

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Summer is a great time to host a baby shower! If you’re planning one for your bestie and her new bundle of joy we know that you have a lot to think about- location, theme, décor, games and food.

We’ve created this cool and easy menu to help you check something off your list. Because it’s hot outside, everyone wants cooler, lighter fare, and we know you don’t want to spend days working over a hot stove. We kept that in mind as we selected these great recipes that require little to no heat!

Crudite Kitchn

Veggie and Dip Cups

These portable little appetizers can be customized to your specific party. Fill the bottom with hummus or ranch (or any dip!) and add in whatever fresh veggies you’d like.

Mango Salad

Mango, Watermelon, and Tomato Salad

How’s this for a summer salad? It’s a colorful array of mango, watermelon and tomato in a tangy, but sweet dressing- sure to delight your guests!

Cheesecake Cookies

Savannah Cheesecake Cookies

These little cheesecake cookies aren’t really cookies at all, but mini bites of scrumptious cheesecake! They can be prepared one week prior to your event and only take 20 minutes to make.

Strawberry Shortcake

Strawberry Country Cake

There’s something about strawberry shortcake that just screams summer. And the addition of the lemon and orange zest give this cake an extra dose of summer! The cake is easy to make and will be a lovely addition to your table.

Peach Tea Punch

Summer Peach Tea Punch

Summer days are hot so be sure that you serve a beverage that’s cold and refreshing. With hints of mint, peach and lemon, this sparkling iced tea will get the job done! If you’re looking for a summer cocktail, try one of these recipes from Pottery Barn. They’re wonderful for a large crowd!

Sandwiches are a popular choice at baby showers because they’re easy to prepare and easy to eat. Though we like the ever-popular chicken salad, we also love unique recipes and thought you might want to try something new at your next event. Both of these sandwiches are family favorites and we’re sure your guests will love them too!

caprese-sandwich-300x170

Caprese Sandwich

If you’d like to offer a lighter or vegetarian option to your guests, try this simple Caprese Sandwich. Start with a French baguette or ciabatta bread, layer fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, and basil. Top with salt, pepper and balsamic glaze. Click here for a more detailed Caprese Sandwich recipe.

Roastbeef Sandwiches

Roast Beef and Arugula Sandwich

1/4 cup Mayonnaise
1 Tbsp. Dried Onion Flakes
1 Tbsp. Spicy Mustard
1 Tbsp. Horseradish Sauce Or Straight Prepared Horseradish
2- 8oz. focaccia loaves
1 lb. thin sliced roast beef
2 oz. Fresh Arugula
1 tsp. Olive Oil
2 Tbsp. Shredded Parmesan

  • Combine the mayo, onion, mustard and horseradish to make the sandwich dressing.
  • Toss the arugula with the olive oil and parmesan.
  • Cut the focaccia bread horizontally so that you have a top and bottom piece.
  • Spread the dressing on the cut side of both pieces. On the bottom piece, layer the roast beef, top with arugula and the top piece of bread. Cut each focaccia into small sandwiches and serve. Enjoy!

10 Nursing and Maternity Dresses We’re Buying from Amazon Right Now

by Jenna Hatfield Leave a Comment

If you’re looking to stay and look hot cool this summer, you’ve come to right place. We’ve rounded up 5 maternity dresses and 5 nursing dresses for you. We’ve covered everything from casual to fancy and in between.

Maternity Dresses

It’s hot. Being pregnant during the dog days of summer makes everything feel exponentially hotter. Even if you’re not normally the dress wearing type, throwing on a dress can help you stay cool. Plus, one piece of clothing feels lighter than multiple pieces.

Here are some maternity dresses we’re loving right now for mamas-to-be.

Maternity Striped Cami Dress – $35.99

Striped Maternity Dress

This striped dress offers more than just a flowy shift to cover your bump. The tie feature in the front adds shape and the buttons down the front bring more style. The back is also smocked to adjust to your growing bust size. Pair this with some cute sandals like the model and head out.

Sunflower Maxi Dress – $38.99

Floral Maxi Dress

Late summer is the perfect time to wear sunflowers. Throw this beauty on and head to a local sunflower farm to capture some gorgeous and timely maternity photos. As an added bonus, the shape of this neckline makes it a perfect candidate for a nursing dress.

Off-the-Shoulder Tie Dye Dress – $26.99

Tie Dye Maternity Dress

Get in on the summer’s hottest trend: tie-dye! These colors feel both funky and pretty at the same time. The off-the-shoulder look will look stunning for a dinner out on your favorite local patio at sunset.

Casual Midi Maternity Dress – $19.99

Animal Print Maternity Dress

Need something more casual to throw on to chase your older kids around the yard this summer? This tank maternity dress is the perfect option. We love the animal print trend, but it also comes in solids and a few floral prints. Why not get a few?

Floral Bodycon Maternity Dress – $29.99

Bodycon Maternity Dress

Attending a wedding or some other fancy function? This dress takes your look to the next level by showing off your baby bump. Pair it with some comfy but stylish flats so you can dance your little one to sleep.

Nursing Dresses

Nursing during the summer months can feel just as hot and uncomfortable as those months spent pregnant. Stay cool with one of these dresses that all feature easy access for your breastfeeding tot in one way or another.

Tank Style Nursing Dress – $21.99

Striped nursing dress

Stay cool and look stylish while toting your newborn around this summer. Throw on this striped nursing dress and some easy kicks. We love that easy access panel and the fact that this dress comes in a variety of colors.

Button-Front Nursing Dress – $21.99

Button-front nursing dress

This dress can easily go from the office to the park. It uses buttons for nursing access. This particular polka dot print brings some class to a business casual look. Like some of the other dresses, it’s available in a variety of solids and prints.

Lemon Print V-Neck Dress – $27.99

Lemon print dress

When life gives you lemons, put them on a dress and rock it. This dress features a deep v-neck which provides easy access for nursing on the go. It also comes in other prints, but lemons remain all the rage this season. Don’t pass this one up!

V-Neck Floral Wrap Maxi Nursing Dress – $25.99

This nursing and maternity dress is a real stunner. The bold print offers some summer color on a cool navy background. The surplice neckline makes for easy breastfeeding anywhere you happen to rock this frock.

Adjustable Spaghetti Strap Nursing Dress – $27.99

Adjustable strap nursing dress

This summery dress features adjustable straps so you can get the best fit possible. The snap-down style is quick and easy. But the truly best part about this dress? Pockets!

What dresses are you wearing to stay cool this summer, mamas?

What’s New on Gugu: December 11, 2019

by Abby Ludwig Leave a Comment

During the holiday season, it is so easy for moms and moms-to-be to forget to stock up on products to treat themselves! Below are some fun new finds from the pregnancy, postpartum, and motherhood market. We love these as gifts for expectant moms or as a personal gift to focus on the always-important (and never attainable) self-care! Let us know some of your favorite just for mom products!

For a number of our other favorites, please check out our Explore page!

NYSSA Postpartum Underwear: Called the ‘Fourthwear’ Collection, we love this update to the standard mesh undies you’ll receive in the hospital. They are stretchy and you can easily insert an ice pack or heating pad where it may be needed most. They can also be worn high-waisted or rolled down for maximum comfort no matter what type of delivery. Love these for all moms to be!

Soothing Scents Expecting Personal Inhaler for Morning Sickness: Those dreaded days full of morning sickness (or all-day sickness) can be behind you! Utilizing essential oils, this inhaler works immediately and is 100% natural. Check with your OB before purchase, but we love the idea of combating morning sickness without added medication.

GLOWE Maternity Leggings: These leggings will be supportive and comfortable from first trimester to the postpartum days! They will give you the support of a medical maternity belt without the bulk of wearing one. Plus they are made from a super soft Italian fabric so you will beat that back pain in style!

The Laundress New Mom Kit: It’s absolutely amazing how one (or two in my case) little babes can dramatically increase the amount of laundry you find yourself doing. The Laundress has created their New Mom Kit to help combat those messy spit ups and blow outs without harsh chemicals, petroleum, phosphate, phthalates, or artificial color. Plus I love that this kit comes with stain remover (a must for little ones) as well as all other detergent products you would need!

HATCH Mama Must-Haves Kit:  An excellent set for pregnant and new moms, HATCH has put together a set of three top selling products. Their Belly Oil is excellent for your moisturizing your growing belly. Down, Girl is  great for relieving swelling in your legs and feet. Nipple + Lip helps keep those special parts (your nipples and lips) hydrated during pregnancy and while nursing. Plus it all comes wrapped in the cutest gift box!

Please note that these opinions are 100% my own and I have not received any products in exchange for placement in What’s New on Gugu!

Best Natural Deodorant – Earth Mama Review

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Best Natural Deodorant – Review of Earth Mama’s New Travel Size Deodorants (Just in Time for Summer!)

Hey everyone! Monica here – founder of Gugu Guru.   I distinctly remember a conversation that I had with another mom about ingredient safety when I was pregnant with my first baby.  She said to me, “You know what keeps me up at night when it comes to personal care during pregnancy? Anti-perspirant – there’s so much toxic stuff in there.”  I hadn’t really thought about it until that moment but it made sense. Clearly there is something in anti-perspirant that represses perspiration, which seems unnatural altogether. In case you didn’t know – aluminum compounds found in many popular anti-perspirant products actually clog the pores of your armpits so that you don’t sweat.  So generally, we advise sticking with deodorants and not anti-perspirants because of this. (If you want to learn more about why you should think about toxins lurking in your anti-perspirants, check out this article from Don’t Mess With Mama.)

It was because of this conversation that I started my journey to find the best natural deodorant out there, which leads me to this review of Earth Mama® Organics’ Mini Deodorant 4-pack.

best natural deodorant

What I Loved:

  • The variety. You get four different “flavors” to try out: Refreshing ginger-lime GingerAid Deodorant, tangerine-y Bright Citrus Deodorant, unscented Non-Scents Deodorant, and fresh, soothing Calming Lavender Deodorant. If you’re like me and can be picky about the scents you wear (I was once haunted on a business trip by a “powder fresh” fragranced antiperspirant I had accidentally purchased), then being able to give different scents a test-drive is a must.
  • The ingredients. When you read the list of all-natural ingredients, you can see why the organic formulations are totally safe for pregnant & nursing mamas (and also humankind in general!)
  • The beneficial scents. When I opened the box, the first thing that struck me is that these deodorants are like the benefits of essential oils for pregnant and nursing mamas + non-toxic deodorants all in one stick. If you feel a little nauseous, try the GingerAid. Tossing and turning at night? Calming Lavender has your back.
  • The size. These are travel-sized, which means that they’re compact enough to throw in your weekender for getaways, gym bag, beach bag and even your diaper bag.  As it’s currently the month of July as I am writing this review – and a scorcher at that – it’s always nice to tote around one of these sticks just in case I need it.

What I Didn’t Love:

Note: I think that the two things that I didn’t love about the Earth Mama® Organics’ Mini Deodorant 4-pack are probably due to user error.

  • The residue.  When you look at the sticks, they look transparent so I figured that these deodorants are invisible once applied.  I think I may have applied way too much but when I put on a black t-shirt, I did have streaks on the side.  This is not a big deal because the next time I threw something black on, I just more carefully put it on to avoid any streaks.
  • The volume. Again, I think I may have applied way too much but these did seem to go somewhat quickly.  I took the unscented stick on a recent trip to Florida and found that all-in-all the stick lasted me about 6 or 7 days. Since these aren’t full size and I was doing multiple applications each day due to swimming, showering, etc., I am not sure what I was expecting.

UPDATE: In response to our review, our contact at Earth Mama had this to say, “Since the texture is soft, we recommend keeping the amount out of the tube somewhat low, to reduce the amount of waste. Personally, I take the extra off the side of the tube and rub that in too! When I first started using our deodorants, I piled it on – I find now that I don’t need that much.”

Overall, I give the  Earth Mama® Organics’ Mini Deodorant 4-pack a big A+ and will now be referring to it as Gugu Guru’s pick for best natural deodorant. (Psst: Pick it up with their organic herbal sitz bath – another must have for prenatal and postpartum mamas.)

Comfortable and Chic Nursing and Maternity Wear: Kindred Bravely

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

When it comes to maternity and breastfeeding-friendly pajamas, bras, and underwear, it can be difficult to find options which are comfortable and will make you feel great about yourself. Kindred Bravely is your one-stop-shop for maternity and nursing-friendly bras, underwear, pajamas and more; they exquisitely combine comfortable and functional pieces with style and detail. Mary Ware, of the Mom Friend blog is due soon with her second baby and got the chance to try out some of Kindred Bravely’s most popular styles. You can find Mary on her blog and Instagram.

Kindred Bravely is unique in that all of their clothing and accessories are designed by moms for moms; only a mom would know that postpartum skin is super sensitive and a bra needs to be as soft as soft can be – which is why their nursing and maternity bras are one-of-a-kind! Kindred Bravely’s clothing feature tiny – but important – details to make motherhood easier.  With soft, premium fabrics and flattering silhouettes, Kindred Bravely combines the coziness moms deserve with the versatility you need. You’ll feel so comfortable, you’ll want to wear these clothes day and night. Kindred Bravely also has adorable accessories, like organic nursing pads, and non-skid socks ideal for labor and delivery (check out all the cute sayings on them!).

Mary tried out the French Terry Racerback Nursing & Sleep Bra (in mint); the simple crossover front design and stretchy fabric make a super comfy nursing and sleep bra with easy one-handed pull-aside breastfeeding access and gentle support. It is the ideal choice for night-time support and keeping breast pads in place. This bra is also a great choice for walking, yoga, or anytime you want light support and comfort. Whether breastfeeding, pregnant, or none-of-the-above, you will enjoy the comfort and style this bra offers and pull it from your drawer time and time again.

The Louisa Ultra High-Waisted Maternity & Pregnancy Leggings can be worn day and night, from your first trimester all the way to delivery day. The versatile style makes them perfect for layering with your favorite maternity tops and tanks; they provide gentle smoothing, comfortably adjusting to your changing body. Plus, nursing moms love pairing these leggings with their favorite nursing bras, allowing for greater coverage and modesty whether breastfeeding in public or just in the company of friends and family.  The soft, stretchy waistband rises over a baby bump or postpartum tummy, ensuring that it won’t dig in to your belly or irritate your C-section incision. Whether you wear them day or night, the leggings will become an essential part of your wardrobe: a staple part of any capsule collection, perfect for wearing with shirts, dresses, camisoles, and sweaters.

See what she has to say here:

You can find Kindred Bravely on their website, Facebook, and Instagram.

Preserving Summer Memories with Pearhead

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

It’s getting to that time of year when kids are slowly trickling back into school, but it’s still hot out…the pool is still open, but yes, summer is on it’s way out. Before summer leaves for good, while all of those summer memories are fresh in your head, is a great time to start preserving all of the summer memories from the entire summer. You know that as soon as school is in full swing, and it becomes holiday season before you know it, those summer memories will seem so distant. We teamed up with Pearhead, known for their eclectic mix of memory making items, to share some of our top picks of ways we can make summer last forever…even if it is only in our minds!

Pictures Frames: We know that you’ve taken countless photos throughout the summer of your little ones with every family member that has come to visit, why not commemorate those special pictures with picture frames chock full of sweet sentiment? We happen to be a bit biased towards the “me & my mommy” frame, but you can also get one for daddy, grandma, grandpa, aunts, uncles, sisters, brothers – and give a gift to the grandparents, with a “my grandkids” frame of a special summer memory.

Family Handprint Frame: We all know how quickly kids grow up, so we’re absolutely loving the idea of this Family Handprint Frame to remember a special summer. You can use a great summer photo from the beach, a picnic, or park and then put everyone’s handprints in the frame to commemorate this specific time in your life.

Baby Book: Pearhead is known for their huge selection of gorgeous baby books! Don’t forget to snag one and write down all of the exciting events from the summer; even if it is as simple as, “baby’s first time eating watermelon,” we know you’re going to want to write it all down to remember all of those precious moments.

Clothespin Collage Frame: We love the idea of decorating the house year round with summer memories, and this Clothespin Collage Frame is the perfect way to do that. This precious frame features white ribbon with mini clothespins for hanging up to 9 favorite 3.25″ x 3.25″ photos of your child. Ribbon and clothespins add a special touch to this frame. Includes frame with space to hang 9 photos, mat for displaying, and hanger for easy wall mounting.

Siblings Collage Frame: Since summer is all about getting together and enjoying the weather, beach, and pool, we love this Siblings frame as a way to commemorate time with aunts, uncles, cousins, and family. A cute description is printed in the center of the frame in gray and Pearhead blue colors saying; “brothers & sisters, partners in crime, siblings, birds of a feather, and friends forever.” Large plastic frame is lightweight and perfect for hanging on any wall with included hanger.

Plus, don’t forget to start thinking ahead to Halloween with this “Cutest Pumpkin in the Patch” picture frame!

Don’t miss these other Pearhead items:

  • Gift ideas for the coffee-loving parent
  • Creating memorable gifts with daddy
  • Gift ideas for new mamas

Atomic Moms Hot Mama Summer Must Haves with Ellie Knaus!

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Editor’s Note: I first came across the Atomic Moms podcast when Jordan Reid was on it, and I immediately fell in love with Ellie’s kind soul and soothing way with words. I appreciated how incredibly non-judgemental she is and both laughs and cries along with her guests. So, you’ll have to excuse the fan-girling (mom-girling?) on today’s post – Ellie is here with her Hot Mama Summer Must Haves, as she is literally due any day now with her second baby. Also, head to the bottom of the post to stream her most recent episode with Dr. Harvey Karp! Take it away, Ellie…

You can find Atomic Moms on iTunes, the Atomic Moms’ Blog, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter

Hi! I’m Ellie Knaus, host of Atomic Moms podcast. Our second summer baby girl is coming any day now! I’m excited, exhausted, and extremely sweaty. I packed up my hospital bag during this weekend’s L.A. heatwave while fantasizing about the chipped ice I can order in the maternity ward. But before I go into labor, I wanted to share with you all my summer must-haves that are making my summer pregnancy a little more enjoyable!

Ruby Rockets Rock-It Red Frozen Veggie and Fruit Pop

This is one food item my preschooler and I can agree on. (Why oh why, do they turn into such little food critics?) These super healthy, gluten free, vegan, popsicles are dairy free, have no added sugar, and are only 25 calories. You know what? I’m going to take a blogging break and waddle over to the freezer to have one right now.

Okay, I’m back. And this popsicle is delicious.

Panasonic Close Curves Bikini Shaper and Trimmer

I can’t see anything below my bump. And I definitely don’t want to get a bikini wax right now. But it’s summer! And as my mom-friend Marie declared, “In pregnancy, buoyancy is a must.” I ordered this bad boy online, hopeful that I’d be able to wade in a pool without having to explain puberty to preschoolers. Let’s just say this bikini trimmer was an interesting trust exercise with my husband. And I’m raving about it because I didn’t end up in the ER.

Patchology Eye Revive FlashPatch 5 Minute Hydrogels – 5 pack

There is nothing more cruel than third trimester insomnia. I toss and turn at 3 a.m. agonizing over the fact that this is my last chance for uninterrupted sleep for the next several months. And yet, between the hormones, the belly kicks, the hot nights, and the bathroom trips, my puffy eyes don’t stand chance. Whenever I need to feel a little less like a 37 weeks pregnant Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, I slap on these chilled under eye masks and pretend like I’m getting ready for an awards show. I will be getting a trophy when this baby comes out, right?

Christy Dawn – Dawn Dress

It’s described as “one size fits all”, and I’m excited to report that includes my 9 month pregnant belly. It’s the most comfortable summer dress ever. It’s long and flowy (read: it doesn’t stick to my butt), and made of fuss-free machine washable cotton. I splurged on this little number when Christy Dawn collaborated with Little Minis so my preschooler and I could wear matching dresses. Go ahead and judge me for tricking my daughter into reenacting my Laura Ashley mother-daughter memories of the 90’s. (P.S. my fashionista three year-old LOVED it!) And now that I’m pregnant, and nothing else in my closet fits, this pretty dress is in heavy rotation. Another bonus: with the front snap, I’ll be able to nurse in it. It’s definitely the fanciest item of clothing covering my bump, but considering I can wear it before, during, and after pregnancy, and that it’s made with deadstock fabric (read: kind to the environment) and created by seamstresses making a living wage in Los Angeles, I feel really good about it.

St. Tropez Self Tan Luxe Facial Oil

I got some not so cute sun-kissed brown spots on my cheeks during my first summer pregnancy, so this go around, I’m playing it safe. I slather on sunscreen in the morning and use this luxe facial oil at night to get my pregnancy glow on. I mix it with my moisturizer for an even application. It’s paraben, sulfate, and phthalate free, and the bottle lasts forever.

Ello Water Syndicate Water Bottle

Hydration is key in pregnancy and so hard to keep on top of in the summer months. The Ello BPA-Free Glass Water Bottle with Flip Lid is my new best mom friend. It’s so easy to clean. And it’s the only water bottle ever that hasn’t leaked in my purse! It’s embarrassing how many text threads my mom friends have devoted to raving about their Ello. It’s like our mom version of slap bracelets or Pogs (remember Pogs?)
