Real Mom Reviews: Belabumbum

by Abby Ludwig Leave a Comment

Belabumbum is all about comfort. Throughout pregnancy, postpartum, and beyond, their items have been created with mamas in mind. As moms, we are always on the hunt for high-quality, multifunctional clothing items. Those comfy basics that you need each day, but also want to wear. The problem is, there are so many items out there and many of them are uncomfortable! We sent some of our real moms a set of Belabumbum’s eco-friendly (and ethically sourced) leakproof intimates to review. Here’s what they had to say:

Kelsey, 2nd Time Mom

The Belabumbum products were better than I could have imagined! I loved the material and femininity of the Enora nursing bra. The bra was super easy to clip and I liked how the leakproof nursing pads could slip in and give it some extra padding. The nursing pad material was thick, moisture-wicking, and truly way better than the itchy disposal nursing pads I have used in the past.

The smoothing brief was my favorite! It felt very secure and the absorbent lining was an extra bonus. The low rise brief was a good option to wear with jeans or a lower waisted pant. Both briefs are a buttery soft material and all products tried were true to size!

Alex, 1st time Mom

The leakproof bra and pads have been great during my breastfeeding and pumping journey! My little one is almost 5 months old and I’ve worn it a couple of times each week when I want something a little sexier than my usual pumping sports bra. The bra is very comfortable and the lace doesn’t show under my top. I typically leak in the morning and didn’t have any issues with the pad inserts when I wore them – kept me leak-free!

The panties weren’t for me as the sizing seemed to be inconsistent with regular sizing. I received my true size, but they were almost two sizes too big and I was unable to wear them. In my opinion, the panties are better suited for maternity vs postpartum.

Christine, 2nd Time Mom

These are my favorite reusable nursing pads that I’ve tried. The non-slip design on the outside keeps them in place, even in nursing tanks where they’d normally slide around. They’re thick and absorbent to prevent any leaking. The nursing bra is comfortable and the touch of lace is tasteful and flattering. Something fun for a nursing bra.

While I can’t speak to the leakproof functionality, I thought the undies were very comfortable. They were definitely something I can see myself wearing. I do think the high rise would probably be more comfortable immediately postpartum or even while pregnant.

Thank you to Belabumbum for allowing our moms to test your wonderful products.

Top 5 Must-Have Essentials: First Night Home With Baby

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

What do you really need when bringing baby home from the hospital? Obviously, you won’t need your high chair, convertible car seat, or even the bulk of your little one’s clothing. But there are a few things that you’ll want to have on hand to make your transition to parenthood seamless for you and baby.

A Safe Place to Sleep + Swaddle

It’s easy to forget about setting up a safe place to sleep, as it’s both so obvious and necessary. We look to the AAP when discussing safe sleep recommendations, and follow the ABC’s of safe sleep.

A- Alone : Baby should sleep in his/her sleep environment on their own.
B- Back: Put baby down to sleep on his/her back.
C- Crib: On a firm, flat environment, like a crib (or bassinet/playard) without any extra blankets, stuffed animals, or bumpers.

Baby should also be swaddled tightly with a swaddle blanket or a wearable swaddle.

Easy Clothing Options

It is so hard to avoid buying clothes for your little one. But, the reality is that it’s best to hold off on purchasing too much. Once you know how your little one is growing, it’ll be easier to buy clothes for the right size and season. Stick with onesies and PJs that are easy to get on/off. Check out our full overview of Newborn Clothing here.

Diapers, Wipes, Ointment

Diapers, wipes, and ointment may seem obvious, but sometimes they’re the easiest items to forget. Stock up on one box of newborn diapers and a box of size one. While you may need to order more newborn diapers, all diaper sizing will overlap and you don’t want to end up with too many extras. One container of ointment is great for the start, but stock up on wipes. You will use them for years!

Feeding Supplies

Larken The Signature Tank

No matter how you are planning to feed your little one, you will want to be stocked with the right supplies. Like every other category, be careful not to overbuy. You won’t need breastmilk storage on day one, but you will want to have your nursing bras/tanks if breastfeeding. If you’re bottle-feeding, you may want to buy bottles in both small and large sizes. However, you really only need large bottles. You can always fill with a small amount of breastmilk or formula! And, make sure to purchase slow flow nipples if your large bottle doesn’t come with them. If you’re going to pump, plan on securing your breast pump before your little one arrives.

Postpartum Care for Mama

It’s easy to spend all of our time and energy putting together the necessities for our little ones, but don’t forget about yourself! You have just delivered a new baby (or possibly babies) and you will need to have some postpartum necessities to make yourself a bit more comfortable. Disposable Underwear, Perineal Spray (or Balm), and Organic Cotton Pads will make you feel just a bit closer to normal.

If you’re recovering from a C-Section, take a look at our Recovery Must-Haves.

Oral Development For Littles

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

When your little one arrives, there isn’t much on your mind besides feeding and a little bit of shut-eye. But eventually, they will grow, and in come the teeth. Teething may arrive calm as a lamb or it may bust through your house like a lion. As your baby’s teeth begin to take shape and oral development changes, there are some things to note.

Newborn Stage & Early Infancy

Baby Oral Development

Your little one doesn’t have any teeth, but this doesn’t mean you should completely ignore your baby’s oral development. Your baby is eating around the clock and may be exclusively nursing, drinking from a bottle, or both. Some will advise staying away from pacifiers during the first few weeks while other experts encourage anything to help the baby soothe. No matter what road you travel, there are a few things to note.

First, teethers aren’t a huge necessity for this stage. Next, when it comes to pacifiers, stick with a round or cylindrical throughout the newborn stage. These are great for breastfed or bottle-fed babies. They allow baby to fully surround the nipple with his/her tongue. We love Nanobebe Flexy, Philips Soothie, and Mam pacifiers for this stage.

The First Teeth have Arrived

Oral Development

You have survived the first teeth breaking through and the sleepless nights that sometimes accompany. Now your little one may be drooling constantly (hello bib central!) and putting everything in his/her mouth. At this point, we recommend moving to an orthodontic pacifier to promote proper oral development of the teeth and palate. Many pacifier companies will even stage their pacifiers for 0-6 mos and 6 mos +, ideally making the change when teeth breakthrough. Boon and Evenflo Feeding have great options.

This is also a great time to introduce teethers. You will want your teether to be easy for your baby to hold and big enough to get towards baby’s mouth. Food-grade silicone is always a great material as it’s easy to clean and holds up to lots of use. Please inspect your little one’s teether before each use as they can occasionally show some wear and will need to be discarded if broken. We find ourselves recommending the following over and over again: Green Sprouts, Moonjax, and Just for Tots.

Mouth Full of Chompers

Baby Oral Development

Your little one now has a mouth full of teeth and it’s time to start caring for them. Brushing is a great first step in your nighttime routine to promote healthy oral development. Also, introducing a variety of healthy foods (of different textures) is great for oral development. We still advise teethers as your little one loves to explore her environment through her mouth. Textured teethers and an easy-to-use toothbrush are a must.

Best Budget Baby Registry Must Haves

by Gugu Guru 1 Comment

Is a Budget Baby Registry really possible? There’s no question that having a baby is going to take a little funding.  The good news is that, although there are certain items that you really shouldn’t get as hand-me-downs (e.g., car seats) – you don’t have to splurge for high-quality items.  There are many budget baby registry finds on the market today, including stylish clothing and gear that won’t break the bank.  Here are our picks for your best budget baby registry, keeping your wallet in mind.

Budget Baby Registry: Gear & On The Go

Best Budget Baby Carrier

We often recommend babywearing, which has wonderful benefits aside from the hands-free aspect. One of our favorite stylish, yet affordable brands on the market is Infantino. This Infantino Flip Advanced 4-in-1 Convertible Carrier ($29.99) grows with your child; suitable for babies 8 to 32lbs. It offers four ways to carry: newborn facing in, older baby facing in, facing out, and back carry. For a budget-friendly wrap-style carrier (without the difficulty of a wrap), we also LOVE the Baby K’tan ($59.95) carrier.

Best Budget Stroller

Baby Trend Snap N Go EX Universal Infant Car Seat Carrier is one of our top recommendations for families on a budget. The Snap N Go turns your infant car seat (we like Graco’s infant car seats) into a travel stroller so you don’t need to have a whole stroller system.  However, when baby grows out of the infant car seat, you’ll need a high-quality lightweight stroller like our favorites – the Summer Infant 3Dlite Convenience Stroller or the super sleek Larktale chit chat.

Looking for the convenience of a travel system? Graco has you covered!

Lastly, in the early stages of baby, you’re going to have to tote around a lot of stuff. We love the Baby K’tan as our stylish value find.  Take a look here to read what some real moms had to say about Baby K’tans hands-free diaper bags.

Budget Baby Registry: Bedroom/Nursery

One of the 2016 safe sleep recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is for infants to share their parents’ bedroom for at least the first six months and, optimally, for the first year of life, based on the latest evidence. So, it’s likely you’ll need a sleeping arrangement for your bedroom. If you’re looking to adhere to AAP guidelines, the super portable, affordable, and safe-sleep approved BRICA Fold N’ Go Travel Bassinet is a dream for your wallet. Do note, it’s only meant for use up to 6 months and, you’ll likely have to put the bassinet on the floor, which may not be practical for a number of reasons (e.g., frequent night-time nursing, pets, etc.) For something sleep-approved that requires less bending over and also grows with your child, go with the Graco Pack ‘n Play On The Go Playard with bassinet.

Best Budget Cribs

You’ll need a crib mattress of course and our budget pick is and always has been the Safety 1st Heavenly Dreams White Crib Mattress. Our general go-to brand for high-quality cribs that won’t break the bank is DaVinci. The Jenny Lind crib shown above will add great style to your nursery without breaking the bank. Ikea also has excellent crib options. Cribs are really a blank canvas regardless – and a great crib sheet can add that pizazz you need. We love the multi-packs by Peanutshell or Ely’s & Co.

moonjax® Swaddle Blanket 3-Pack Moon, Stardust, Constellation

For use inside or outside of the nursery, do NOT forget some muslin swaddle blankets, which have multiple uses beyond just swaddling.  Parents just rave about these 100% organic swaddle blankets from Moonjax said to be among the softest of their kind out there.  While they are on the pricier side, the multi-pack gets you a great deal on something you’ll use all the time.

Best Budget Swaddles

Wearable swaddles like the Swaddle Me Original swaddles are also a great, budget-conscious option. Swaddles create a cozy, womb-like feeling for baby and prevent the startle reflex that can wake your newborn infant. A three pack of these costs around $35 or less

Wubbanub Soft Toy and Infant Pacifier

While the wildly popular Wubbanub may be described by some as pricey and hardly fit for a budget baby registry, we’ve added it for two reasons: 1. it’s a 2-in-1 product (pacifier + lovie) so we feel that this justifies a higher price tag and 2. if you’re having a shower, it’s great to register for this item as a gift. An important thing to note about Wubbanubs, due to safe sleep recommendations, reserve the Wubbanub for supervised snoozing only.

Nanobebe flexy pacifiers are an excellent choice for sleep!

Best Budget Baby Monitor

Since the launch of Gugu Guru in 2015, the VTech DM221 Safe & Sound Digital Audio Baby Monitor has remained our leading budget baby monitor recommendation across the board. If you’re looking for a video monitor, we would recommend the Summer Infant Glimpse Video Baby Monitor as our budget video monitor pick coming in at less than $100.

Best Budget Humidifier

You’ll need a cool mist humidifier for your home. It will help immensely when baby catches the sniffles and even when breastfeeding! We have always been huge fans of Crane USA and their excellent humidifiers.

Budget Baby Registry: Layette

Best Budget Baby Layette

Generally people love to gift clothing, so try to register for specific items that you know you’ll love. We always recommend adding pajamas in a variety of sizes and some basics that you know you’ll use. Check out our post on newborn clothing necessities Clothing is also something that you can easily score as hand-me-downs or from BST (Buy/Sell/ Trade) groups on Facebook. You’ll want to get lots of onesies and zippered pajamas (snaps are terrible in the middle of the night.) To make sure you have some of the basics covered, you can also register for an economical layette set like this Essential Newborn Baby Layette Set from SpaSilk. Here’s a budget tip – go gender neutral for clothes.  If you plan to have more babies, you can re-use what you have and if you don’t plan on having another, you can trade or sell gender-neutral items more easily.

Budget Baby Registry: Feeding

Regardless of how you plan to feed your baby, you’ll definitely need some burp cloths. One of the most popular burp cloths is actually labeled as a diaper! The Gerber Birdseye 3-Ply Prefold Cloth Diaper. A pack of 10 will cost you less than $20.

Though it’s certainly not the least expensive pillow on the market, nursing moms love the My Brest Friend Original Nursing Pillow, which comes in a variety of colors and styles. You’ll also want to pick up some nursing pads as well. For mothers who are not exclusively breastfeeding, the Evenflo Balance + Bottles are an excellent high-quality budget choice. Parents love the angled bottle for reducing gas and ease of use. Don’t forget a bottle brush too.

As baby starts solids and graduates to self-feeding, the Fisher-Price Spacesaver High Chair is our top budget choice. In fact, Gugu Guru’s founder, Monica, used this chair for her two babes. For baby’s adventures dining in, you’ll also need soft-tip infant spoons, suction bowls and bibs (note: there are drool bibs and there are feeding bibs, we’re speaking of the latter.)

Budget Baby Registry: Bath & Potty

Here’s the truth about diapers: you may have to try a few brands before you figure out what works best.  It’s not unusual that one diaper brand is deemed as superior and leak proof by one parent, and that same brand is labeled as inferior by another.  It’s also not unusual to switch along the way.

Best Budget Diapers

Huggies Little Snugglers, Pampers Swaddlers, and Luvs are often loved by many parents. Also, don’t look past your bulk buy stores (Costco and Sam’s Club both have excellent diaper options). Target also has an excellent line of diapers, which many parents swear by! took the cake. Budget hint: try Amazon’s Subscribe & Save service for 5% off diapers and also wipes.

Earth Mama Organics Simply Non-Scents Castile Baby Wash

Even though this post is about saving money on baby products, Gugu Guru would encourage our readers not to skimp too much on products you put on baby’s skin, e.g., hair & body wash or lotion. Luckily, we found Earth Mama’s line of safe baby wash, perfect for those newborn suds.

For infant bath tubs, Summer’s Splish ‘n Splash Newborn Tub has always reigned supreme among parents for a best budget find. Shown here, this tub will grow with your little one all the way to toddlerhood!

Best Budget Hooded Towels

For adorable and budget-friendly hooded towels and washcloths, look no further than Luvable friends.

Budget-minded parents will be happy to know that you can get all of your health and grooming essentials in one fell swoop with the Safety 1st Deluxe Kit

Budget Baby Registry: Play Time

For our favorite budget play mat, the beloved Infantino brand comes in again with some amazing options.

Fisher Price consistently has some great play options. You can find some exceptional toys, bouncers, and seats for baby to use throughout the house.

by Abby Ludwig Leave a Comment

Is baby eating enough? Is baby sleeping enough? Do we have enough diapers and wipes to get us through the next week? New parents have so much to worry about. Cleaning your bottles should not be one of those stressors. The newest product from one of our top-recommended brands, Nanobébé, will make this daily chore even easier. Introducing: the Nanobébé Electric Baby Bottle Brush.

The Most Convenient Bottle Brush

The new Nanobébé Electric Bottle Brush is a perfect addition to your cleaning routine. Unlike most other bottle brushes, the electric rotating head allows you to clean bottles quickly and thoroughly. It also has an interchangeable head, fitting your Flexy Pacifiers perfectly and ensuring that the brush stays hygienic and clean. No more time wasted on scrubbing stubborn breastmilk or formula stains. Your bottles and pacifiers will be sparkling in a matter of seconds.

Bottle Cleaning Revamped

A perfect gift for any new parent, the Nanobébé Electric Bottle Brush will make washing baby’s bottles enjoyable! The suction cup base allows the brush to stand upright, always keeping it a quick reach away. A single charge will give you weeks of cleaning and you’ll never need batteries on hand to keep your brush running.

Jade, a first-time mom in Chicago helped us review the Electric Bottle Brush – “My favorite part about it is the nipple head, as I always struggled getting that part of the bottle super clean with a regular brush. Now I don’t dread cleaning and I love knowing that [his] bottles are extra clean after using this electric brush!”

We truly believe in Nanobébé’s entire line of products. The Electric Bottle Brush will be the perfect addition to any feeding bundle gift. Pair with a set of Flexy Silicone Bottles and a Slim Drying Rack, and you have every parent’s needs covered!

Thank you to Nanobébé for making this sponsored post possible.

Real Mom Review: Just for Tots Cactus Baby Teether

by Christine Swearingen Leave a Comment

Just for Tots is the only manufacturer in the market today of baby teether designs that are CPSC, ASTM, CSPIA compliant without making exceptions or special considerations. A couple of our village mamas tried out the Cactus Baby Teether with their little ones. Check out what they have to say below!

Alison S.

The Just for Tots Cactus Baby Teether held up against my expectations of what a teether should be like. I enjoy the thick silicone material because easily washable and safe for my little one. My 2.5 toddler got ahold of it and did bite/pull off one of the bristles with his teeth, so I did have to discard it. I wouldn’t recommend it for a toddler who is getting molars in! My little one enjoys the shape and size of it as he was able to easily move it around between his hands and he wasn’t able to choke himself on it. Both I and my little one enjoyed the multiple textures that were offered so each arm felt different on his teeth. I will definitely be buying these for friends in the future!

Amy Howard

The Just for Tots Cactus Teether design is GENIUS! It’s so easy for little hands to hold.  The toothbrush is amazing for introducing teeth brushing to your Littles.  It has different textures to soothe baby’s sore gums.  It’s made of silicone so it’s so easy to clean! You can even pop it in the dishwasher.

Thank you to Just for Tots for making this sponsored post possible.

Why Expectant Moms Love this Brand

by Jenna Hatfield Leave a Comment

Whether you’re breastfeeding, formula feeding, or a mix of both, nanobebe offers great feeding gear for all moms and babies. You’ll love how easy they make feeding, with everything from bottles to warmers to storage to diaper bags. We’ve compiled a list of our favorites to help you get started.

Nanobebe Bottles

Nanobebe Breastmilk Baby Bottle – $10.99

If you’re breastfeeding, the Banobebe Breastmilk Baby Bottle is definitely one you want to have on hand. It’s the only bottle specifically designed for the breastfeeding baby. It encourages smooth transitions between breast and bottle due to its unique shape. Additionally, it boasts an anti-colic nipple, reduces hot spots in warmed milk, and even comes with a breast pump adapter to pump directly into the bottle. As an added bonus, the bottles are stackable for easy storage.

Nanobebe Flexy Silicone Baby Bottle – $12.99

Coming in at the largest size, the Flexy Silicone Bottle still offers that anti-colic nipple. It features three vents to keep the nipple from collapsing while your baby is eating. This bottle has a stable base and handles, which are sold separately, so your baby can learn to feed on their own. You can read more about the Flexy here.

Feeding Gear

Nanobebe Breast Milk Storage Bags – $9.99

We mentioned these in our round-up of items for National Breastfeeding Month, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t remind you about them. Flat breastmilk storage bags are genius enough, but these stack so well in the organizer. Anything that makes organizing easier is something we can champion!

Nanobebe Microwave Steam Sterilizer – $24.99

Parents of newborns are justly concerned about sterilizing their babies’ feeding items. Nanobebe made it easy with this microwave sterilizer. It helps eliminate 99.9% of all household germs in less than four minutes. If you leave the lid on after sterilizing in the microwave, items under the bubble will stay sterilized for up to 24 hours. This piece of gear will help save time and give you peace of mind.

Nanobebe Diaper Bags

nanobebe Bebe Backpack – $39.99

Nanobebe Bebe Backpack

This backpack style of diaper bag from Nanobebe offers many benefits to parents. The gender neutral aspect of the backpack makes it easy for any parent to carry. Additionally, as the weight is distributed evenly across your shoulders, you won’t be thrown off balance to one side or the other like with a traditional strap style diaper bag. That way you can chase your toddler, carry your baby, and not worry about your diaper bag. This one is roomy, with lots of outer and inner pockets for easy organization on the go.

Nanobebe Travel Cooler – $10.99

Travel Cooler

While not a full diaper bag, the Nanobebe Travel Cooler is definitely a bag you want to have on hand. It features three layers of insulation to keep milk either cool or warm while you’re out and about. You can stack three of the Nanobebe Breastmilk Bottles in the bag along with a few extra accessories like pacifiers in the extra room. We love that you can connect the strap to your stroller or even your Nanobebe Bebe Backpack.

We have many other Nanobebe products in our marketplace, so be sure to check them out.

Must-Have Baby Safety Products

by Christine Swearingen Leave a Comment

It’s Baby Safety Month and we know how important safety is for all families with little ones. As new and expectant parents, the worry to pick the safest products for your new babe can be overwhelming. We’re here to make it a little easier with our must-have baby safety products.

Safe Nursery

Our favorite monitor for safe sleep is the Nanit Pro Complete Monitoring System. The full set with the smart crib sheet and breathing wear with the safe sleep angle feature will put any parents’ sleep worries at ease. We love that there’s a wall-mount and floor stand option too so it fits in any nursery or sleep setting.

An air purifier is a must for any home, but especially the nursery. The Crane Air Purifier includes a pre-filter, true HEPA filter, and UV lamp to remove bacteria and germs from the air. Keep your baby’s nursery clean and clear and be comfortable knowing the air quality is purified.

A Hygro Plus Humidifier from Babymoov allows you to select an ideal humidity level, between 30% and 90%, and will turn off when the desired level is reached. Fancy! It also displays the room temperature and you can also add essential oils to the built-in essential oil diffuser.

Another must-have for any nursery, or the entire home really, is an outlet protector. The Child Be Safe Electrical Outlet Protector is easy to install and fits rectangular wall outlets and rectangle switches to keep little ones from gaining access to wall outlets or dangerous electrical switches. This one item alone is essential for baby safety in the home.

Safe Feeding

Sterilizing is a must to ensure that your baby’s bottles and feeding accessories are safe, clean, and germ-free. Our top choice is the nanobebe microwave sterilizer! With a closed lid, its contents remain sterile for 24 hours, so you can sterilize before bed and wake up to sterilized bottles ready for use.

This may be “just” a magnet, but this MAMMaway magnet with breastmilk storage guidelines is top notch! Don’t try to remember how long milk is good for, stick it on your freezer so you’ll never forget and don’t have to worry if your milk is safe for baby.

Baby Safety On the Go

The Clek Liing is a great infant car seat all around and sets the bar high for infant car seat safety. Simple, secure installation ensures that baby is always at the perfect angle for safe, open airways. Its lightweight design and convenient one-handed quick-release make it easy to remove from the base or from one of the many compatible strollers. Also check out the Clek Foonf as a great convertible car seat option.

One of our top recommended on-the-go safety must-haves is hand sanitizer of course! Kibou Sanitizer slips right inside your Kibou bag, pocket, or other diaper bag, without taking up an extra inch of precious space or adding more than an ounce of extra weight. This ultra-slim sanitizer spray is the perfect companion wherever your day takes you.
