YZ Light Up Shoes from Lighting Shoes Review

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

We were fortunate enough to recently receive YZ Light Up Shoes from Lighting Shoes to review.  You may remember them as a craze from the nineties but if you haven’t heard of LED shoes, you’re in for a fun surprise  — especially if you’re the parent of a toddler who is just learning to walk. LED stands for Light Emitting Diode and LED shoes are shoes that light up. This fun footwear promotes dance, art and movement all around. Read on to learn more and check out the promo code for Gugu Guru fans at the end of the post!

Unlike original LED light-up footwear, Lighting Shoes’ line of cutting-edge sneakers light up the whole sole rather than just the heel. One of my kids’ favorite features of these LED shoes is that you can select from a variety of different colors for the sole. The YZ Light Up Shoes have seven static color modes, one strobe mode, or three color changing modes that you can customize based on your outfit or mood.  My kids often expressed their individuality and changed the color of their YZ Light Up Shoes to mismatched colors for each of their feet.

shoes-led-yeezy-shoes-toddler-little-kids-sneakers-pink-2

Another very cool feature is that these shoes are USB-rechargeable. Each LED shoe is equipped with an easily accessible USB rechargeable battery that takes only 2 hours to charge the LED shoes and lasts up to 6 hours. One thing I was questioning was whether these shoes are waterproof and durable. Well, a recent trip to Adventureland and several trips on the “Crocodile Run” and “Little Dipper” water rides, proved without a doubt that these shoes can get soaked and still light up like a charm.

Overall, I highly recommend these shoes for toddlers, kids and even teens. We have really enjoyed them. Visit lightingshoes.net to grab LED kicks of your own and use code guguguru15 for 15% off any shoes and free express shipping. No expiration date either!

Mompreneur Spotlight: Haylie Duff + Jessica Frank of Little Moon Society

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Little Moon Society is the labor of love between two lifelong friends, actress and lifestyle expert, Haylie Duff and veteran children’s clothing designer, Jessica Frank. The moment these two became mothers, they knew they wanted to raise thoughtful and unique children; Little Moon Society was born from that ideal. Each piece in the Little Moon Society collection is handmade in Los Angeles, California, using only the highest quality materials. Children express themselves through play, so wearability and durability are at the heart of each article. Like the constantly changing phases of the moon, children are always evolving. Haylie Duff and Jessica Frank are here to chat about being mom-bosses and how and why they started Little Moon Society.

You can find Little Moon Society on their website, Facebook, and Instagram.

How and why did you start Little Moon Society?

Haylie and I have been best friends since we were teenagers. Haylie is such an incredible business woman, having her hand in so many different ventures: Real Girls Kitchen, acting, blogging, being an author – that design was just a natural next step for her. I have a lot of experience in design and have been in the kids clothing space for a decade now. Before we started Little Moon Society, I gave Ryan, Haylie’s 2 year old little girl, some clothing from my last brand. Haylie fell in love, and felt inspired to see where a joint partnership could take us, and the rest is history.

Where did you come up with the name?

Choosing our name was a true collaboration. We were hanging out one evening, talking about our love for all things moon and stars. We kept going back and forth, and thus Little Moon Society was born. We really wanted a name that would reflect all the phases of a child’s personality and the moon has always reflected that feeling for us.

How do you balance work and family?

I don’t know if it’s as much of a balance as it is a juggling act. Our kids are our #1 priority, and everything else comes second. We’re lucky because our kids are also best of friends, so we can get together and have the kids play while we work. It’s amazing what mamas can get done in an hour or two!

What’s the best part about being a “Mompreneur” and running your own business?

The best part about being a mompreneur is making our own rules and our own schedule. We don’t feel that there is a separation between our business and parenting our girls. Our children inspire every aspect of our business. Our designs come from what we wish for in their closets. Our fabrics come from what they feel is most comfortable and cozy on their little bodies. Our manufacturing decisions come from our love of supporting local businesses (our manufacturer is a family owned and operated business!). My 3 month old daughter Sloan comes with us to every meeting and appointment. It’s such a blessing for me to work and still be able to be with her full-time. Haylie’s daughter Ryan was a big inspiration for our summer collection and one of our models. She wears the pieces from our collection every day and we love how comfortable she looks playing and running around in them.

Little Moon Society is a reflection of our personal passions and beliefs. It’s important to us to give our children the best of everything – love, food, clothing, and so on. LMS was founded on this philosophy – the highest quality materials, made with love and care in Los Angeles, with pieces kids will love to wear and moms will love to dress them in

A Darling First Birthday Party Registry

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

While Gugu Guru is known for being a baby registry, one of the benefits of being able to add products from anywhere on the internet, is using Gugu Guru as registry beyond pregnancy. The lovely and talented Christine Lakin, known for her delightful and sassy character Al on Step by Step is all grown up and a mama to the gorgeous Georgia James. When time came to plan for Georgia’s first birthday party, Christine worked with Gugu Guru on creating a first birthday party registry. We wanted to make sure that the gifts Georgia got for her birthday would last long beyond the party, so we searched high and low for both fun, and evergreen baby toys. Plus, we helped Christine find amazing party decor and it was so easy to add it to her registry, even the fun Etsy finds!

Want to see more of Christine? Check out the premier of her new show Hollywood Darlings, with Beverly Mitchell and Jodie Sweetin, premiering on POP TV, Wednesday April 12th at 8PM EST. Very excited to see our favorite childhood stars together for this unscripted look at Hollywood life and parenthood.

The theme of Georgia’s party was Owls, so Gugu Guru looked for pretty owl party decor! Georgia had two lovely cakes, one of which was topped by an owl from KrisKropMemories, and the banner is from one of our favorite Etsy shops, Kiss Me Kate Studio. The high chair banner was also from KrisKrop Studios. We wanted to make sure the birthday girl had something she could really drink out of, and Tervis happened to have lovely owl themed sippy cups and tumblers for mom and dad, too!

The birthday girl wore a personalized outfit from Sweet Family Crafts, and a sweet little crown headband from Mosey Handmade.

We worked with Christine on picking out gifts for Georgia which she could grow, grow, grow with! Little Bee Books sent over an awesome assortment of toddler books, and Raffi sent over his Owl Singalong CD (perfect, right?) – books and music are two things which never get old with kids! Melissa and Doug were kind enough to gift Georgia the ultimate pink kitchen, and Skip Hop sent over a ton of owl themed kid-life necessities, backpack, thermos, dishes and more. A wonderful way to commemorate an owl of a party!

They started Smockingbird with the goal of creating stylish and unique yet affordable clothing for babies and children. Smockingbird has a unique selling style in that they use a pre-order style of selling which allows them to keep costs low. They also utlizie social media to sell, and have daily sales on Facebook and Instagram. Instagram sales are daily at 11:00AM ET, 1:30PM ET and 8:30PM ET, and Facebook sales are weekly Tuesday 8:30PM ET and Saturday 7:00AM ET.

Must Have Travel Item: FlyKids

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

“Flying with kids is sooo much fun” is not a phrase you tend to hear being tossed around in parenting circles, and with good reason! It’s not just the anxiety of making sure your son or daughter isn’t kicking the seat of the person in front of him, or pressing their service button every 5 minutes — it’s keeping them constantly occupied for the whole flight. Even if you’ve got a screen and an array of kids’ entertainment for them to watch, it’s still nice for them to have something creative to do, right?
b12223_b683caa2f90e4f09865da08866b354dc-jpgA trio of Brooklyn moms thought so, too. The mothers, all sworn travel aficionados, launched a company called FlyKids after realizing how much stress and anxiety seemed to go into packing for a flight with kids (running around with that endless loop of Did I bring enough/too much/will they like the toys/get bored/what about snacks?)
b12223_7d62c59b0070493d93074e2e1ffb2761-jpg
A FlyKids kit takes all the guesswork out of the equation, because FlyKids handles it for you: Just fill out a quick questionnaire on the website, listing a few of your child’s interests and preferences, and they’ll whip up a kit that’s curated just for your kid. My four-year-old boy was excited to see that his kit included a pirate-themed Melissa & Doug puffy sticker set, a Dr. Seuss matching game, some animal finger puppets, felt sticker sets, a Curious George book, a toy Passport, and more. If you’re gearing up to travel this holiday season, head to FlyKids and get started – you’ll pat yourself on the back for it later (like as you’re actually reading a magazine and your toddler is playing by himself!).

How To: Trick or Treat With an Infant and a Toddler (+ Baby K’Tan and Finn+Emma giveaway!)

by Gugu Guru 2 Comments

This month’s Cool Mom Picks Baby Registry Essentials guide features some awesome baby gift ideas for second babies. When you create your personalized registry on Gugu Guru, you’ll know the Cool Mom Pick must-haves in our product recommendations when you see this button:GG_CoolMomPicks-03

While Halloween is fun for kids, it can be a juggling act when it’s time to Trick or Treat and you’re balancing an infant in one arm and a wild Halloween toddler in another hand. Today we’re sharing our tips for Trick or Treating with an infant and a toddler and the Cool Mom Picks products to make All Hallow’s Eve night just a little easier on you.

CoolMomPicks2

1. Baby K’Tan  – This is a must have item for Halloween night! Use this if your baby is a newborn so that you can hold your toddler’s hand while he or she trick-or-treats – major plus – newborn will most likely fall asleep while you’re walking around, so no overtired newborn when you get back home.
PRODUCT WIDGET – ID: 5548a31863363658462a0e00

2. Double Stroller  – You’ll need a double stroller to push the two kids around in if you’re walking in the neighborhood; we love the UPPAbaby Vista for multiple kiddos.
PRODUCT WIDGET – ID: 5548a5376336362244360800
3. Carseat  – You’ll need a topnotch carseat, like the Britax Marathon Clicktight – consistently one of the highest (if not THE highest) rated carseats in the market.
PRODUCT WIDGET – ID: 57f4d619428ba01c11c3f970

4. Baby Brezza Formula Pro + new feeding essentials – You worry about getting the candy and toddler’s costume ready and let the Brezza get bottles ready for while you walk the neighborhood. Dr. Brown’s bottles are easy to grip if baby is self-feeding (plus glass is truly safe!)
PRODUCT WIDGET – ID: 55c335956336361868580200
PRODUCT WIDGET – ID: 57f4ef0659841f7b42cbeab3

5. Diaper Bag – It’s going to be a long night out on the town with the toddler (okay, maybe twenty minutes, but it will feel like hours) so don’t forget to bring a diaper bag with stroller hooks, like the Skip Hop Signature Diaper Bag. Believe us, you don’t want to be lugging around a bag full of all the necessities PLUS Halloween goodies on your shoulder or back!
PRODUCT WIDGET – ID: 5649c88c633636440b910300

6. Finn + Emma Stroller Toy – Little one waiting in the stroller for the toddler to slowly walk up to someone’s house for candy? The Finn + Emma Stroller Toy is the perfect way to keep baby distracted. They’re organic – so safe to chew on – and come in fun characters for Halloween like Jack the Pirate.
PRODUCT WIDGET – ID: 57861efdf3e6910c53451fc2
14524385_10206960471110820_2333211565481865593_o

7. Primary onesies  – Preparing for Halloween costumes can be totally overwhelming as a parent of two, so make it easy on yourself and head to Primary where you can pick any solid color onesie and make it a quick costume for the infant – like, a blush pink onesie makes a perfect little piggy!
PRODUCT WIDGET – ID: 569d65f6633636329ba80300

8. Baby socks – Speaking of quick costume ideas, Trumpette socks also are easy costume pieces for baby and reusable like the onesies – since it’s a waste to spend money on an infant costume that they’ll quickly outgrow or – worse – be uncomfortable in, and cry through the night when you’re trying to trick or treat with your tot.
PRODUCT WIDGET – ID: 55cb2e516336361f602d0c00
9. Baby book – Don’t forget to record all the exciting events of the night in a baby book – like this one from Lucy Darling.

PRODUCT WIDGET – ID: 57f4da022505ed1c625cdbae

10. Miracle blanket – Your toddler might be on a sugar high so get baby to get a good night sleep with the miracle blanket swaddle, which is proven to extend baby’s sleep time. Later you can attack that candy.
PRODUCT WIDGET – ID: 57f4e1b0f3e69104735f1a1c

Back to Preschool With Stasher, skip*hop and Rockets of Awesome

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Hey there – it’s Monica, Gugu Guru’s founder. It’s that time of year {sigh} summer is really coming to an end, people. This means it’s time to finish up all the prep for going back to preschool and I’m sharing a few product discovery picks that have made life a little easier in our home this year.

Stasher

Stashed

Disclaimer: I received Stasher bags for review but all opinions are my own.

I would not describe myself as an “eco mama” by any means, my cupboards are a good mix of organic and the not so organic stuff. However, I would say that my family is really good about recycling.  One item that we use a lot and that does make me feel guilty is ziplock bags. We use a TON of them to store just about everything – from leftovers to crayons and more – leaving me constantly rinsing them out in an effort to re-use them and do my part to save our planet from all this trash.  Well, my worries have come to an end folks. Enter Stasher – the world’s first—and only—self-sealing, airtight, non-plastic bag!

_CPB1328x-lowres

Why am I loving on Stasher for Back to School? It’s just genius in terms of not being wasteful.  I don’t only mean for the environment but also for all the leftovers your picky baby or toddler or kid will be generating over his or her childhood.  I cannot tell you how many times, I have had food on the tray of the high chair and pondered, “Is this ziplock worthy?” Now the answer can always be “yes” with Stasher.

stash

These bags are super functional; easily going from the freezer, to the microwave, and to the dishwasher.  Also, you’re not limited to storing food, they make great travel bags, organizers and more.

skip*hop Zoo Lunchie Insulated Lunch Bag, Owl

skip hop insulated lunch bag

I just love skip*hop; it’s a classic brand with iconic designs. You’ll be met with a lot of choices when you go back to school shopping – especially when it comes to backpacks and lunch boxes. Don’t be fooled into grabbing that cartoon character lunch bag. Smart, high-quality design like skip*hop is always a good investment for parents.

unspecified-2

This roomy, insulated PVC-free lunch bag keeps food and drinks cold. The large main compartment is big enough to hold a sandwich, fruit and juice box and it also has an interior mesh pocket for utensils (or snack!) The top handle attaches onto another bag – which is great for kiddos that are new to handling backpacks.

Rockets of Awesome

Full disclosure here: Rockets of Awesome used to be a baby registry site called Cricket’s Circle and I guess you could say Cricket’s Circle was a competitor to Gugu Guru of sorts.  So, needless to say I was very intrigued when the company evolved into a kids’ clothing subscription service called Rockets of Awesome and I signed up for my boxes the day the site launched. The first thing I thought was, “Who needs another clothing subscription service?” I am here to say, I do – and you probably do too!

Striped dress with tulle skirt and crown headband from Rockets of Awesome.

Fiona rocking her first day of school outfit: a striped dress with tulle skirt and matching crown headband from Rockets of Awesome.

To get started with Rockets of Awesome, you take a style quiz for your kid(s). The more information, you give about your child’s style, the better. Then you get a note that the stylist is working on your box and you should receive it within the next few days.

Here’s what I liked:

  • There is NO FEE to try this subscription. Just pay for what you keep.  There are so many subscription boxes out there that charge you a fee just to get a box – even if you don’t keep anything. When I saw this, I felt like Rockets of Awesome did their legwork when it came to researching what parents would appreciate from a box service.
  • My kids were thrilled to open their boxes and see what was selected for their style. That was the highlight of the experience – the element of surprise.
  • The clothes are all unique & stylish, mostly well constructed and a very reasonable price.
  • Very easy to return what we didn’t want to keep, as well as provide feedback to the stylists on why we kept what we did.

Some minor things to be improved:

  • A few of the items – just a few – seemed a little lower on the quality side.
  • My son is very tall but very skinny; some of the pants sent to us fit his waist but looked like floods.  Sizing with kids is a tough nut to crack sometimes. We’ll see how it’s handled with the next box.
  • A glitch with billing that was resolved relatively quickly, but I had to contact Customer Service to point it out.

Could you just hit Old Navy and shop for clothes there? Yes, but this is more fun.  However, the real deciding factor of whether I will continue with RoA will be the upcoming boxes.  Will update you all in October. In the meantime, if you want to try it out, you can use this link to receive a free item with your first purchase.

Rory in Rockets of Awesome

How did Rockets of Awesome know that Rory is camouflage-crazed? Not sure. But this outfit in his box was a total winner.

Mompreneur Spotlight: Lindsey Laurain of ezpz

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Here at Gugu Guru, we’re proponents of any products and ideas which make mealtime easier for the family; which is why we’re so excited to introduce Lindsey Laurain of ezpz! ezpz features placemats, bowls, and mealtime tools which are not only healthy and safe for babies and kids, but promote self-feeding skills and independence in young children.

Ezpz-facebook-3

GG: How and why did you start ezpz?

LL: Our life can be pretty chaotic, especially at mealtime, and my husband and I were fed up with the messiness and cleanup time dedicated to each meal. One night (in the midst of his frustration) my husband said, “Someone needs to create something kids can’t toss or throw at meals!” The next day I hopped online and, low and behold, nothing exists. From that day on I was committed to creating products that made meals with kids ezpz – and that is how the Happy Mat came to be!

ezpz easter eggs-156

GG: How do you balance work and family?

Balancing work and family is a constant challenge, but I do my best! I try to shut down my computer when the kids get home from school and spend some time giving each one of my three boys the attention they deserve. One thing I love about starting ezpz from scratch has been teaching the boys about what you can achieve with hard work, a positive attitude and teamwork.

Lindsey-Tams-Christie-8

GG: What’s the best part of being a “Mompreneur” and running your own business?

The best part of being an entrepreneur is having an amazing team and community! I have the pleasure of working with my best friends, husband and brother! Our community (ezpz fans and supporters) are also phenomenal; they keep us motivated and upbeat even when times are tough.

Mompreneur Spotlight: Caroline Freedman, co-founder NurturMe

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

This week’s Mompreneur interview is with Caroline Freedman, co-founder of NurturMe. NurturMe is the first and only family of certified-organic, dried fruit and veggie meals and snacks created to nourish healthy growth and overall wellness in little ones. Made from specially selected super fruits and veggies that are quick-dried in order to preserve freshness, flavor and vital nutrients, NurturMe baby and toddler foods are certified organic, gluten-free, non-GMO and kosher, with no added preservatives, sugars or salts. They’re also super lightweight and made in the USA, leaving a smaller carbon footprint on our planet than the other options found in the baby aisle.

Nurturme_0098

GG: How and why did you start your NurturMe?

CF: The idea came about seven years ago, when I was pregnant with my first child. I was doing a lot of research about when to feed your child, what ingredients are appropriate, how the whole process works. … It was very intimidating. I was surprised to find there was no innovation in baby food. It was still Gerber. It was still pureed foods in jars. It seemed like the perfect opportunity to create a brand that could appeal to modern parents.
Nurturme_0058

GG: How do you balance work and family?

CF: I found a partner. Aside from actual workload, there is just so much problem-solving that goes on. My business partner, who also has two children, Lauren de la Rosa, and I help one another. We have two very different approaches, and, in some situations, her approach is more effective and, in others, mine is. The fact that we have that dynamic as co-founders has enabled us to both grow our families, stay sane and enjoy this ride we’re on. Also, in regards to maintaining balance, it’s important to have a rich and fulfilling social life. There’s this idea that entrepreneurs have to have their heads down and focus on work all the time, but my experience has been that as my company and my responsibilities have grown, my relationships and my friendships have deepened. I don’t have this tunnel vision on work 100 percent of the time.

NM_Squeeze_Elle

GG: What’s the best part of being a “Mompreneur” and running your own business?

CF: One of the things I love most about it is being an example to my girls. Their view of what a mom does is work, run her own business, while also (hopefully, from their perspective) being an involved and present parent. It’s something that I hope will shape them into confident girls and women who feel that they, too, can do whatever they set their minds to.
