The Newest Nursery Necessities from Crane Baby

by Abby Ludwig Leave a Comment

Designing a nursery is not for the faint of heart. A quick Google search gives you 1000’s of inspiration photos to help narrow in on ‘that look’ you are going for. Not to mention the everchanging Nursery Trends that you want to keep up with. Luckily, our friends at Crane have done it again, with their new line; Crane Baby. Their curated nursery collections are truly a one-stop shop for decorating your perfect nursery. The high-quality, durable items perfectly balance both style and function.

Bedding & Décor

Your newborn only needs a tight-fitting crib sheet to complete his/her crib, but that doesn’t mean you have to skimp on other nursery décor. Crane Baby has gorgeous wall hangings and changing pad covers. They have matching muslin blankets, which are great for the stroller on a chilly day or for your toddler to cuddle up. They also have adorable pillow and rug accents, excellent to help complete the look around your nursery chair. The best part? No more guessing if things will ‘match.’ Throughout the site, Crane Baby highlights different nursery looks making design choices easy peasy!

Christine’s Review of Crane Baby Décor

Playtime

We may try to keep toys out of the nursery, but the reality is that your little one will play in there. Luckily, this does not mean that you have to give up your desired aesthetic. A corresponding play mat, neutral storage baskets, and even matching toys will complete your look. These options are eco-friendly, unique, and eye-catching.

Essentials

Crane Baby’s décor pieces are such a wonderful addition to every home, but we can’t forget to mention the nursery essentials. We would be remiss if we didn’t mention our top recommended product from Crane, the 4-in-1 Humidifier. A sound machine, cool-mist humidifier and nightlight in one, this is a must for baby’s first set of sniffles and every dry winter day. Their air purifiers will also keep your little one breathing easy. Add in some hooded towels and wearable blankets and you’re set!

Thank you to Crane Baby for making this sponsored post possible.

Eco-Friendly Favorites from our Gugu Guides

by Abby Ludwig Leave a Comment

When we need advice, we always turn to our real-life boots on the ground – the parents who have been there and done that. Our Gugu Guides are back to share some of their favorite eco-friendly favorites. With Earth Day around the corner, so many families are looking for simple ways to reduce their footprint. So let’s work together to simplify the ‘stuff’ and make small changes to our everyday.

For Everyday

Replace your dryer sheets with eco-friendly Wool Dryer Balls. An easy change that ends up saving you money over time!

For Newborns

Bonsie Baby will always be a favorite newborn eco-friendly pick. Their mom-founded products are wonderful for skin-to-skin contact and are made of the softest material. Plus they are a favorite amongst many of our Gugu Guides.

For Tummy Time (and beyond!)

Another mom-founded brand, we (like Rachel) are huge fans of Toki Mats. Their eco-friendly playmats fold up making them great for tummy time in the early days. As your little one gets bigger, fold up and put in your stroller basket for an impromptu gymnastics session or picnic date.

For Nursing/Pumping Mama

A favorite nipple cream around here, Earth Mama’s nipple butter is great for nursing, pumping, and every chapped lips! We have tried it out everywhere and can safely say that the organic ointment is great at healing those sore, cracked nipples. Plus it’s safe for baby to ingest, so no need to rub it off before your next nursing session.

For Playtime

Lovevery has the best eco-friendly toys around! While they are known for their activity gym and play kits, don’t sleep on the block set. This awesome toy comes with a play guide (like all Lovevery products) and will last forever.

Our Gugu Guides have been there and done that. See more real reviews from products they’ve tried with their little ones.

Real Mom Reviews: Belabumbum

by Abby Ludwig Leave a Comment

Belabumbum is all about comfort. Throughout pregnancy, postpartum, and beyond, their items have been created with mamas in mind. As moms, we are always on the hunt for high-quality, multifunctional clothing items. Those comfy basics that you need each day, but also want to wear. The problem is, there are so many items out there and many of them are uncomfortable! We sent some of our real moms a set of Belabumbum’s eco-friendly (and ethically sourced) leakproof intimates to review. Here’s what they had to say:

Kelsey, 2nd Time Mom

The Belabumbum products were better than I could have imagined! I loved the material and femininity of the Enora nursing bra. The bra was super easy to clip and I liked how the leakproof nursing pads could slip in and give it some extra padding. The nursing pad material was thick, moisture-wicking, and truly way better than the itchy disposal nursing pads I have used in the past.

The smoothing brief was my favorite! It felt very secure and the absorbent lining was an extra bonus. The low rise brief was a good option to wear with jeans or a lower waisted pant. Both briefs are a buttery soft material and all products tried were true to size!

Alex, 1st time Mom

The leakproof bra and pads have been great during my breastfeeding and pumping journey! My little one is almost 5 months old and I’ve worn it a couple of times each week when I want something a little sexier than my usual pumping sports bra. The bra is very comfortable and the lace doesn’t show under my top. I typically leak in the morning and didn’t have any issues with the pad inserts when I wore them – kept me leak-free!

The panties weren’t for me as the sizing seemed to be inconsistent with regular sizing. I received my true size, but they were almost two sizes too big and I was unable to wear them. In my opinion, the panties are better suited for maternity vs postpartum.

Christine, 2nd Time Mom

These are my favorite reusable nursing pads that I’ve tried. The non-slip design on the outside keeps them in place, even in nursing tanks where they’d normally slide around. They’re thick and absorbent to prevent any leaking. The nursing bra is comfortable and the touch of lace is tasteful and flattering. Something fun for a nursing bra.

While I can’t speak to the leakproof functionality, I thought the undies were very comfortable. They were definitely something I can see myself wearing. I do think the high rise would probably be more comfortable immediately postpartum or even while pregnant.

Thank you to Belabumbum for allowing our moms to test your wonderful products.

Simplify your Life with Kids? 3 Common Mistakes

by Abby Ludwig Leave a Comment

We all have the best of intentions when trying to simplify. We want to clear our minds, our homes, and our drawers of all the junk. Come on in minimalism, and help me parent! The truth is, though, that it’s really common to make some simple mistakes when trying to simplify your life with littles.

Purging Everything

It happened. You stepped on a Lego and start screaming about “getting rid of every toy in this house.” We’ve been there. We’ve done it. We’re embarrassed too. The fact is, that you don’t have to purge everything to simplify your life. Instead, take it easy and take it slow. Start with one toy bin. Every weekend, pick 3 bins to go through and sort the items into 3 categories; Keep Out, Store Away, and Donate. Rotate through your toys/games/books instead of leaving all toys accessible. By rotating your toys, your little ones will actually play more creatively with the toys on the shelf.

If you purge everything too quickly, it’s more likely that you’ll end up purchasing items to replace. Donate the items that your little ones have grown out of and store away things that they may still use. Bring these items out on playdates or days off of school. If they still aren’t used, then it’s a good time to donate!

Hours of Research

You want to get started, but you have no idea where to start. Of course, you reach for your phone and google “How do I simplify my life with kids?” 3 hours later, your little one is awake from his nap and your head is spinning with ideas. Repeat after me – start small. You don’t need to have a whole plan in place when you begin simplifying. We live in a world where it has to look ‘perfect’ or it isn’t complete. This isn’t true!

Instead of scrolling for the perfect solutions, just get started. If you have a toddler, put away the soft infant toys. Once you have a preschooler, you can safely put away the activity table that she no longer sits in. Let your little one be part of the process and just get started. You’ll thank us later!

Organization Overload

We’ve all seen the accounts on Instagram. The perfectly organized playroom or color-coded drawers. Yes, I binged the whole season of The Home Edit immediately after it was released. I spent weeks (ok… months) trying to find the perfect storage bins for our play area and the perfect organizational tools for my kitchen. As I got started organizing these spaces, I realized that while the containers were great for my space, they weren’t great for my brain. Take a step back and think about what actually makes sense for your daily needs. Do snacks need to be easily accessible? Should certain toys be stored out of sight?

I realized pretty quickly that having the right items accessible for my kids simplified a great deal of my life. Even something as simple as putting my toddlers’ socks in the bottom dresser drawer, so they could pick out socks (a daily struggle with my twins) changed our mornings. Work smarter, not harder!

Playard Picks: 2022 Edition

by Abby Ludwig 1 Comment

Playards have become a necessity for many families over the last 10 years. They are the true multi-functional item that you will use again and again as your little one grows. In the newborn days, your playard may be a safe sleep spot for the baby. It takes up a small amount of space next to your bed, keeping the baby close for those middle-of-the-night feeds. Many playards have a bassinet setting, which is also great for naps throughout the day. The changing station (which is included with many playards) is an excellent place to change your little one, especially if the nursery is far from your play area. Plus, the playard will easily fold up for travel and is a great place for your toddler to sleep while on the go. A true must-have, take a look at our best playards for 2022.

Breeze® Plus Playard With Bassinet & Changer | 4moms®

Easiest Fold: 4moms Breeze Plus

The 4moms breeze plus is a playard, bassinet, and changing table in one. It is easy to move around the house, always giving you a convenient place for the baby to sleep. The Breeze Plus is extremely easy to open/close and is an excellent secondary changing station. The bassinet is compatible with up to 18 pounds while the playard will hold up to 30 pounds. The removable bassinet, changer, and playard are all easy to clean with a simple damp cloth.

Eco-friendly Pick: Lotus Travel Crib from Guava Family

The lightest playard, the Lotus is GreenGuard Gold non-toxic certified (low VOC & no lead, phthalates, PVC, heavy metals, etc.). Full-height mesh guarantees breathable airflow. Plus, parents are just crazy about the side access panel that allows you easy access through the lockable door. Set up is simple and the Lotus playard only weighs 13 lbs packed, making it an excellent choice for travel. The Lotus comes with a backpack carrying case and a thick, soft foam pad approved for overnight sleep (0-3 years old.) They have also launched their Bassinet & Crib Kit.

Budget Pick: Graco Pack n Play Reversible Napper & Changer LX

The Graco Pack n Play Reversible Napper & Changer includes a newborn napper station for baby to sleep and reverses to a changing table for easy diaper changes. After baby outgrows the removable full-size bassinet, the Graco Pack n Play easily converts to a portable playard. The napper and bassinet can be used for babies up to 15 pounds. This playard also includes a toy bar with plush toys.

Multiples Pick: Romp & Roost

Romp & Roost is the ultimate playard for twins or even just for one baby. This stylish, oversized playard can be used for a play area or sleep space. This play yard includes a patented, removable divider that separates the space into two spacious spaces with an airy mesh fabric. The Romp & Roost features large wheels with brakes and a convenient carry bag making it perfect for trips to grandma’s house.

Modern Pick: Nuna Sena Aire

The Nuna Sena Aire is an easy-to-use playard with an innovative, chic design you won’t mind having out in your home.  Unlike many other playards, the Nuna Sena Aire is easy to open and close with one hand and easily slides into the included travel bag.  You can be sure your baby is comfy with full mesh sides and the included quilted mattress. The mattress can be used in the higher position as a bassinet and easily moves to the lower position for use until your little one is 30 pounds.

Minimalist Pick: Bugaboo Stardust

Looking for something unique that meets your minimalist aesthetic? Bugaboo Stardust unfolds in 1 second and stores easily. Great for that room where you need baby to nap, but want your floor space back each morning! An excellent choice for toddler play in a small space.

Real Mom Reviews: Nanobébé Flexy Silicone Bottle

by Abby Ludwig Leave a Comment

Your little one is about to arrive and you’re looking to be fully stocked for feeding. Unsure about your feeding path, you feel that it’s best to have some bottles ready to go. How do you select the best bottle for your needs? While the pieces and parts of many bottles may leave you feeling confused, we want to make sure you’ve seen the newest option from Nanobébé. Made from a soft, mom-like silicone, this bottle is easy to use and even simpler to clean. It has a non-collapsing nipple and a very stable base. We reached out to our team of moms to see how the Flexy bottle stood up to everyday use.

Heather

“The Nanobébé bottles are a household fave for our family! They are so easy to use, clean, and put together. My favorite part is that they don’t tip over during late-night feedings on our nursery chair because of the big base. Our baby prefers them over the other bottles we have and so do we!”

Haley

“The Flexy Silicone Nanobébé baby bottle is by far my son’s favorite. The ultra-soft silicone makes breastfeeding and bottle feeding nearly indistinguishable, and the bottle has a triple-vented nipple to prevent colic.  The shape is familiar for babies and easy to hold. He latches on wonderfully every time and I love to bottle feed him with this line!

Although not the bottle, I’d also recommend the pacifiers from Nanobébé. The flexy pacifiers are my son’s favorite. He is only one month so many of them fall out of his mouth easily, but this pacifier is easier for him to latch onto even when he turns his head to the side. It’s one of the few that gets him to calm down.”

Jade

“We love love love the Nanobébé bottles!! Especially when it comes to cleaning! Bottle cleaning after a long day is always dreaded, but these bottles have so few parts it makes it not so bad! Also, they can stand on almost anything! I put them down on the arm of the chair as I’m about to feed my little guy and it doesn’t fall over as I rock the chair back to sit down. I really can’t say enough good things about them and choose them over every other bottle we’ve tried!”

Leah

No description available.

“We tried a few different bottles before I returned to work and the Nanobébé Flexy bottle was the only bottle my babe would take without gulping air. These bottles were an easy transition and didn’t create nipple confusion. The soft silicone makes it feel more like mom vs. plastic or glass bottles too. The bottles are easy to clean and can hook up right to my Spectra flanges. We recently bought the handles that fit right onto the bottles and love them also. The only setback to this bottle is that the silicone takes longer to warm up breastmilk. I usually heat the milk up in a breastmilk bag first to make it faster!” *We did notice that heating up silicone bottles tends to take longer than heating plastic bottles, due to their thick, natural material.

Emmy

“I was skeptical about the soft silicone bottle from Nanobébé with my little ones. Some silicone is too soft and squishy, but boy was I wrong! I love how they feel in my hand and they are always stable when I set them down on the edge of the couch. My babies both take formula easily from these bottles, and I love that even the big 9-ounce bottle doesn’t feel too big. The big bottles also came with the slow flow nipple, which was nice so I didn’t have to worry about finding the right flow nipple for my newborns. The only downside is that I do have small hands and the wide base makes them a little awkward to hold. After the first few feedings, it wasn’t such a big deal anymore, and I actually found that my baby was able to hold the bottle by himself much earlier than other bottles.”

Lexie

No description available.

“I love these bottles! I’ve used many other brands and these are by far my favorite. They are so easy to clean and assemble. I love that there aren’t a ton of pieces like other bottles. The silicone makes them very easy to grip and the shape is great for him learning to hold it by himself!”

As you can see, our real moms just can’t get enough of the Nanobébé Flexy Bottles. The bottles are modern, convenient, and make feeding so much simpler.

Kudos to Kudos Diapers!

by Abby Ludwig Leave a Comment

We are always on the search for great product lines at Gugu Guru. Especially products that parents use constantly. Ask any Mom what her favorite diaper is and it’s likely she’ll rattle off multiple brands. Some are great for newborns, some are a better fit for chunky thighs, and others are great for big bellies. Some are thick and soft, some are thin but surprisingly absorbent. Why can’t one diaper do it all?!

I think we’ve found one! Kudos Diapers are 100% plant-based cotton, helping little ones with sensitive skin stay rash-free. Great for eczema-prone skin, these fragrance-free diapers have no extra ‘yucks!’ They are absorbent, thick without being bulky, and fit well. Even their packaging is recyclable and sustainably sourced. Read below to see how moms from our Gugu Village feel about Kudos!

Sarah

I LOVE the feel of the Kudos diapers! They are made with cotton and you can tell in the softness. The side tabs also feel much sturdier and stretchy and would be very hard to pull off.

Our 9lb 7 week old wears NB in Huggies and the size 1 fit well, so definitely look at the size chart when ordering. These diapers are very absorbent without the risk of leaking inner material onto your baby if they get overly full.

Joanie

These diapers fit my baby so well! I’ve used them overnight (12 hours) and have no problems with leaks. I love that they are extra long in the front and back – hold in lots of liquid for my son overnight and also prevent blowouts in the back. The sizing runs slightly larger than the Huggies and Kirkland diapers that I normally use.

Some Major Pros:

-You can really feel the difference [in the fabric] when you’re comparing to Kirkland and Huggies. The material feels less plasticky and much more breathable.

-Knowing that I dispose of 6-10 diapers per day and they can take up to 500 years to decompose, I really wanted to find a good, eco-friendly diaper! The patterns

-Aesthetically, the patterns are absolutely adorable!

-I’ve tried so many diapers and I’m happy to find something that is so absorbent it works for 12+ hours with my son.

Jessica

I’ve tried a few different diaper brands, but I must say that these Kudos diapers are so soft compared to others. I like the fact the company uses plant-based materials to make the diapers. The waist band is extremely stretchy and they seemed to fit my little one very comfortably. Theses diapers are super absorbent and my little one did not have any leaks or blow outs while wearing them. I also like the different patterns and designs that comes on the diapers. On the other hand, I did notice the entire pack of white diapers I received contained small black specks on the inside of the diapers. I attempted to rub them off but they do not come off. Overall, the diapers are good. I had zero leaks and zero blow outs which is a win for me.

Zoe

I really like the idea of cotton diapers, so I was excited to try these diapers out. Upon receiving and testing them for the course of about 2 weeks, I thought the cotton felt nice and breathable on her skin for both daytime and overnight wear. Their absorbency was on par with other diaper brands we use. I felt good about the environmental implications of cotton vs other materials from other diapers. The prints were cute, fun and added some pizazz which I liked.

During the course of testing these, my baby’s weight ranged from about 8.5 to 9 pounds, so we tested out the size 1 diaper. I felt it fit pretty true to size for a size 1 contrary to being told they run small. She wears size 1 in Huggies and Pampers. I did feel that the elastic around her leg could be a little more taught in order to really “seal” around her legs. I also personally like when the Velcro tabs are not white (ex: Pampers has yellow tabs) or when there is an indication of front vs back so that it is easy to identify the front when changing diapers in limited light for night changes.

Annie

My kids have the most sensitive skin. We are constantly at the dermatologist trying new creams, ointments, etc. to keep their eczema at bay. I was excited to try the Kudos diapers as they 100% cotton, soft, and fragrance-free. I have often run into issues with other ‘clean’ diapers as they are stiff and rough against my littles skin. Not Kudos diapers! They felt a little thin when I first took them out of the packaging, but they easily kept leaks at bay. My toddler (20 months) was able to move around without any extra diaper bulk and didn’t have any issues with the absorbency. I loved that they didn’t take up as much space in the drawer, so I could fit the full pack in our dresser.

Thanks to Kudos for letting some of our moms test your great product!

On the Go Gear for Eco-friendly Families

by Abby Ludwig Leave a Comment

Your life is busy and full of complicated stuff. Your baby gear should be simple. It should be easy. Most importantly, it should be something you love to use. When we come across excellent products, we need to ‘shout it from the rooftop!’ Bumbleride strollers are our go-to recommendation when working with eco-friendly families. Born in San Diego, Bumbleride’s stroller line can do it all. They are all-terrain strollers, not too heavy, and designed for all of life’s adventures.

While all of this is great, our favorite part about the brand is their dedication to the materials. They put great pride in using recycled materials and production processes that will create the safest strollers for your littles. Pair with some of our other top Eco-Friendly (and Affordable) finds and you’ve got all your basics covered.

Want to learn more? Read about their materials here and their manufacturing processes here. Cheers to Bumbleride for focusing on sustainability!

Bumbleride Era

One of our top recommended strollers at Gugu Guru, Era changed the game for eco-friendly families. With its reversible seat, quick compact fold, and small footprint, this is the perfect stroller choice for city, suburbs, or country! The stroller is newborn compatible (on it’s deepest recline or with a car seat adapter) and has excellent storage. Plus it’s air-filled tires (and included air pump) will help push through anything. This stroller is truly one of a kind!

Don’t take our word for it!

See what Brittany Littleton (Mom of 3 & Vegan Restauranteur) had to say:
“Over the past few years, sustainability has become trendy. This would be great, except that so much of what is marketed as “eco-friendly” isn’t at all. Especially in the baby market, there is SO MUCH PLASTIC WASTE. If you want something high end AND kind to the planet? Forget about it. Until @bumbleride — they have a true mission of sustainability with documented proof. They are constantly seeking to improve and being transparent about their operations. The fact that this fabric is made fully from recycled plastic water bottles makes my heart happy. I have hope we can create a beautiful future for our little ones.”

Bumbleride Indie

This do it all single stroller is a great choice for families who like to constantly be on the move. Great for unpaved trails, sidewalks, grass, and more, the Indie can push over anything. Its all-wheel suspension, air-filled tires will give you an excellent push and it will hold your little one up to 55 lbs. This stroller can take a car seat and reclines flat enough to be newborn compatible, making it a perfect option from day 1. Great for a day at the beach or a walk to the park!

Eco-friendly Family with multiples? Looking for a great double option for your toddler + baby? Check out the Indie Twin, which offers all of the same great features noted above, but with two seats! And for those twin moms? Yes! It will take 2 car seats!

Bumbleride Speed

Active and eco-minded? Bumbleride has you covered! Their Speed stroller can run, walk, and jog with you through every errand and activity. One of the lightest-weight jogging strollers on the market, the Speed will double as your everyday stroller. With it’s large wheels and huge canopy, this stroller is the perfect choice for your little ones up to 65 lbs. Just make sure not to run with your little one until cleared by your pediatrician and Bumbleride will take care of the rest.
