Perfect Gift Ideas

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

At Gugu Guru, we just love gifts that keep on giving. Whether they’re smart, practical finds, heirloom quality or cause-driven, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite gift ideas for growing families. These make wonderful baby shower gifts or add them to your registry.

Cause-Driven Fashion

We would be crazy about the adorable and affordable fashions from Smockingbird anyway, but the fact that the brand gives back to a different cause each month makes us love them even more.  Started by two best friends (who also happen to be sisters-in-law),  Smockingbird offers really cute clothes for children at unbeatable prices.

Smart Finds

Self-care is so important when you’re a new mama and, let’s be honest, breastfeeding can be hard. You can get clogged ducts, pain from mastitis, milk blebs and other discomforts associated with breastfeeding. Of course it’s all worth it to give your babe the best, but you don’t have to suffer through it.  Rachel’s Remedy breastfeeding relief packs are a brand new way to treat, soothe and relieve breastfeeding conditions. They offer FDA cleared, moist heat or cooling therapy.

Speaking of comfort or discomfort for that matter, pumping can sometimes be painful for moms, especially those who are exclusively pumping. BeauGen wants to help moms have a more positive, more comfortable breast-pumping experience. BeauGen nipple cushions are a soft, stretchy, and convenient solution that can significantly reduce the pain and discomfort of breast pumping.

Baby K'Tan Diaper Bag

One of the things we love the most about the Baby K’Tan Diaper Bag is its built-in wetbag with antibacterial lining – making it a super smart find for parents. This very stylish diaper bag is made of a unique medical-grade FDA approved nylon, the built-in wet bag pocket is resistant against the growth of germs and odor-causing bacteria, and is completely washable and food safe.

Adorable & Eco-Friendly Accents

Finch & Cotter

One of our favorite gift ideas, is the personalized birth announcement pillow from our friends at Finch & Cotter. Just provide them with the baby’s stats and they’ll create a custom birth announcement pillow. Aside from being such a special, personalized gift, we love that Finch & Cotter is made in the USA from eco-friendly inks and organic cotton canvas so it’s safe for any nursery.

Baby Baazaar

If you’re into global chic aesthetic and favor eco-friendly, fair trade practices – look no further than one of our latest discoveries: Baby Baazaar. Baby Baazaar’s aim is to bring hard-to find, eco-friendly children’s products to parents everywhere. The founder is originally from India, and she continues to be inspired by the unique aesthetics and handcrafting abilities of the artisans back home.

Thank you to Smockingbird, Finch & Cotter, Rachel’s Remedy, BeauGen, Baby Baazaar and Baby K’Tan for making this sponsored post possible.

DIY Toddler Game

by Gugu Guru 2 Comments

See Kate Sew partners with Gugu Guru once again to share a fantastic DIY tutorial.  This time? An easy and fun game you can play with your toddler.

Today’s DIY is a painting activity! This is a matching game made with paint on wooden discs. This is a pretty simple tutorial so you could involve your toddler in making it, if you want! The game itself helps teach colors, shapes and designs, which is an added bonus.

I’m always looking for activities I can do with my 4 year old while entertaining a baby as well and the Little Nomad mat has been a fun place for us to play together. We can pull out a little game or a story and set some toys out for the baby. Everyone is happy and we love gathering here.

This mat is so cute and flows nicely with my home decor. We have the mat in our living room and I love not having a primary color mat where we entertain! It’s nice and adult feeling but still functions perfectly for our little kids! The baby knows its her place space and loves to explore the mat! You can read more about it over at See Kate Sew!

Materials:

-2″ wooden discs
-colorful acrylic paints
-vinyl
-xacto knife

Instructions:

Cut out squares from the vinyl first and create shapes using an X-acto knife. Before cutting, layer 2 pieces of vinyl so you get two designs that are exactly the same.

You can use a hole punch, craft punches and other tools to make different designs. I made polka dots with a hole punch, a scallop circle with a scrapbooking punch and then made another by covering half the wooden circle with vinyl. There are lots of possibilities and you can take input from your toddler or older child, too!

If you are low on shapes, make multiple circles, for example, and paint a pair a different color.

Use paints to paint over the the vinyl.

Let the paint dry, then peel off the vinyl. Your shape will be nice and dry and you’ll be ready to play.

A Post-Consumer Recycled Baby Registry

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

In the past, we’ve written about all sorts of sustainable and eco-friendly mom and baby products but this week we’re focusing on brands that convert plastic bottles into stylish products for your baby registry and home.

Mohawk Flooring EverStrand®
Mohawk  – a leader in sustainable and environmentally responsible flooring – uses recycled plastic bottles to make its EverStrand line of carpeting. The plastic bottles actually create a stronger yarn than other PET. So you will get a durable, long-lasting carpet that contributes to a cleaner planet: made with up to 100% recycled content. With a robust selection of textures and colors featuring exceptional color clarity and fade resistance at an affordable price, you’re sure to find one that fits your style and your budget.

Lassig Green Label Neckline Diaper Bag
The Lassig Green Label Neckline bag continues to be one of – if not THE – most popular bags for eco-conscious moms’ Gugu Guru registries. The Lassig Green Label Neckline Diaper Bag keeps you organized and looks like a super-chic handbag. Made from recycled plastic bottles, it includes 2 large main compartments, lots of pockets, a changing pad, wet pocket, zip pouch, and more.

Mitz Must Love Dinosaurs Children’s Dress with Spikes
The Must Love Dinosaurs dress from Mitz Accessories is available in sizes for infants, toddlers and kids. The dress features black felt spikes that go down the back of the dress! RAWR! The spikes comfortably fold over and are made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic bottles.

Green Toys
Green Toys Inc. is an eco-friendly toy company whose mantra is “every day is Earth Day.” Green Toys are made with 100% recycled milk jugs. These non-toxic products are all BPA and Phthalate Free, as well as 100% USA Made.

Gugu Guru Loves REPREVE®
When it comes to post-consumer recycled goods, the editors at Gugu Guru are especially excited about a material called REPREVE®, which is a recycled polyester yarn made from melted old plastic bottles. Unifi, the company that produces REPREVE®, is receiving heavy accolades as the company that is turning 4 billion plastic bottles into cool products. Here are just some of those awesome products that you should consider adding to your registry:

The Stair Barrier
A must for homes with multiple stories (and also great for travel), the Stair Barrier is a specially designed, fabric gate for the bottom of the stairs. With a variety of sizing options available The Stair Barrier is a stylish and effective way to keep your child and pets safe around steps with banisters. See their collection of barriers constructed with REPREVE here.

Recycled Beachfront Baby Wrap made with Repreve®
Each Beachfront Baby® Wrap made with 100% Repreve® PC polyester contains approximately 15 plastic water bottles. All of the Recycled Wraps come with a matching drawstring carry bag, which is also made with Repreve®, and the packaging for this wrap is printed on 100% recycled paper. Made in the USA, all Beachfront Baby® “one size” carriers are sewn with care by work-at-home-moms in the San Antonio, Texas area. Available in Sky Blue as shown.

Tekhni Woven Slings

Tekhni Woven Sling Studio
Born in 2013, Tekhni is the culmination of art, design and babywearing. The babywearing mom founder, Alisa DeMarco, is a painter, graphic designer, dye artist and textile designer.  Tekhni has made the pledge to create wraparound slings and accessories from the finest resources, finished by hand in Grayslake, Illinois. A variety of yarns and blends are used in my wraps– cotton, linen, silk, Repreve®, Tencel®, and more– chosen for beauty and comfort. Everything is finished lovingly by Tekhni’s local Chicago-land seamstresses.

American Flora Shop
And for mom style, we are digging American Flora Shop. The founder of American Flora got her inspiration largely from being a ballet dancer and teacher. She wanted to create pieces that would provide a comfortable feel and feminine look in the studio, and would also pair well with lifestyle wear, and was particularly focused on finding a sustainable fabric. All made in the USA, American Flora’s Life. and Sport. Collections continue to reflect the passion for designing pieces with versatility and femininity in mind. Check out this adorable Pink Bottle Headband made with REPREVE, which assures a soft, comfortable feel.

Hygge Baby Registry Ideas

by Gugu Guru

The Gugu Guru team is obsessed with a new concept this winter, “hygge” – have you heard of it? Hygge, pronounced HOO-gah, is the Danish word for cozy, and as the New York Times said in their recent piece on Hygge, “It is also a national manifesto, nay, an obsession expressed in the constant pursuit of homespun pleasures involving candlelight, fires, fuzzy knitted socks, porridge, coffee, cake and other people.” This cozy phenomenon is becoming more popular for families in America, and what’s a more hygge concept than a warm and cozy baby? We rounded up our favorite hygge baby products to help you get hygge with it! As the New York Times stated, “How to get hygge? Go home and stay there, preferably in your hyggekrog — a.k.a. “cozy nook” — wrapped in a blanket, drinking a cup of coffee…” We think all parents can roll with that idea!

Hygge Mama Ideas:

Bigelow Boots, Wool is Cool, $140; Slipper Socks, The Grommet, $20; Mama Bear Mug, $15; Calm Air Spray, The Good Home Co., $30; Calm Candle, The Good Home Co., $30; Rustic Pines Blanket, Glam Camp Shop, $79

Hygge Baby Ideas:

Baby Nordic Knitting Pilot Cap, Hanna Anderson, $10; Navy Cozie Baby Booties, Zutano, $21; Baby Nordic Ski Sweater Set, Hanna Anderson, $29; Baby Sherpa Lined Gnome Sweater, Hanna Anderson, $29; Medium Bashful Polar Bear By Jellycat, Hanna Anderson, $23

Hygge Nursery Ideas:

Cora’s Nursery

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

We absolutely fell in love with Lindsay Wilkins of Hello Hue Blog, when we came across her Instagram.  Then pregnant with her now 4 month old beautiful daughter, Cora, we love Lindsay’s sense of style.  The decor that she selected for Cora’s nursery is so special and eclectic; we find it the intersection of sophistication and simplicity.  The room is not overly designed and has lots of eye-catching gorgeous touches. We’re excited to share it with you today. Follow along as Lindsay lets us know about her choices to decorate this unique nursery.

First up – the crib mattress. Safety is of utmost importance when it comes to selecting a crib mattress. You may ask, “Can a crib mattress be a nursery accent?” Our answer is an emphatic YES!

breeze_1024x1024

Gugu Guru recommended Lullaby Earth Breeze crib mattress as a perfect fit for Cora’s nursery because, not only is it safe and breathable, it comes in a gorgeous array of colors as seen above – like this pink hue that Lindsay selected for Cora’s sleeping space.

We’re all about personalization on Gugu Guru and it’s also a huge trend in nursery. On Etsy shop, Lucy’s Letters, you’ll find wooden name signs available in a rainbow of gorgeous colors. The signs are all lightweight and perfect for personalizing a space.

sign

Next up – a key nursery accent: bedding. We love us an heirloom quilt over here at Gugu Guru. Lindsay selected Etsy shop The Feather and Arrow‘s beautiful quilt work for the nursery. Lindsay says that she loves the brand for its maker but also because the product is high quality, “Megan has a heart of gold and her quilts are not only lovely but so durable too ( believe me- we’ve washed ours several times already thanks to our little Poopy McGee).”

nursery4

One of our favorite touches to Cora’s gorgeous nursery is these absolutely stunning paper flowers from Amaranthus Paper Flora on the wall. Not only are these flowers beautiful, but they’re perfectly lightweight for hanging above baby’s head. This company is run by mother-daughter duo Meredith and Cherie, which makes it even more heartwarming.

Thank you to our brand partners at Lullaby Earth for sponsoring this post.

Sustainable Nursery – Save Vs. Splurge

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Having a baby in the age of environmental guilt is a daunting task. You want to buy all the right things to create the safest, healthiest, and most planet-friendly environment for your newborn. But can you afford it? From the author of Spit That Out! The Overly Informed Parent’s Guide to Raising Healthy Kids in the Age of Environmental Guilt, here is Paige Wolf’s advice on when to splurge and how to save.

13122900_10153766824657933_6215629560069415146_o

Photo from Live Sweet Photography

SPLURGE: Mattress

With the growing knowledge of phthalates, VOCs, and toxic flame retardants in conventional mattresses, new parents are increasingly interested in organic mattresses for their babies and children. After all, babies and young children spend at least half their time in bed! Unfortunately, without proper knowledge, you might find yourself buying a fake organic mattress. Since greenwashing knows no limits –and no government agency regulates the labeling of mattresses as “organic” or “natural” several companies label their mattresses ‘organic’ when they are technically not. Look for certifications by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and GREENGUARD®.

Gugu Recommended: Naturepedic Mattresses

SAVE: Bedding

Organic cotton sheets and pillowcases are more accessible and affordable than ever. Big box stores like Target sell 100% organic cotton bedding for as low as $9.99 for a crib sheet.

Gugu Recommended: Burt’s Bees Organic Crib Sheets

micuna-n-n-nb-pa-2

SPLURGE: Crib

Due to changing safety standards, cribs are often not a safe secondhand bet. New crib safety standards took effect in June 2011 and made most cribs sold before that date technically unsafe. And cheap cribs made from pressed wood products such as particle board, plywood and fiberboard (or MDF) typically contain VOCs as well as formaldehyde in the glues and adhesives used to bond the particles together. Though hard wood is more expensive, it’s usually durable, making it a solid investment (bearing of course crib standards don’t change again!)

Gugu Recommended: Micuna Cribs

SAVE: Bed, Dresser, and Other Furnishings

When it comes to other nursery furnishings, secondhand can be a fantastic way to save money and reduce consumption. Parents are constantly selling – and even giving away – gently used furnishings on CraigsList, local parent message boards, and even Buy Nothing Project Facebook Groups. We got our son’s convertible IKEA twin bed for $20 on Craigslist and a beautifully made wooden bed for our daughter for a steal from a neighborhood group. Just keep an eye out for anything too vintage, which could be a lead paint hazard. If you are unsure, pick up a lead testing kit for about $7.

SPLURGE: Paint

This really isn’t too much of a splurge, because no-VOC (volatile organic compound) paint is now available from most major brands with a minimal premium – especially if you are just doing one room. VOC vapors can continue to leak into the air long after the paint is dry, so it’s not something you want a baby or pregnant woman exposed to.

Gugu Recommended: Lullaby Paints

finn

SAVE: Clothing/Layette

I don’t care how precious that designer onesie is. It will get one-to-two wears at best before it is completely destroyed. In fact, you will be lucky if it lasts an hour. Take advantage of your community and accept all the hand-me-downs you can get. While it may not always be organic, hand-me-down clothing that has been washed several times has less residue from dyes and flame retardants. If you don’t have easy access to hand-me-downs from a close family member, explore online community groups where parents offer up gently used clothing for cheap and even for free!

Gugu Recommended: Finn + Emma

We’re so excited to introduce you to a wonderful company, YouthfulNest, which is a super affordable way moms and dads can create the nursery or kid’s room of their dreams.

Created and founded by designer, Lisa Janvrin, YouthfulNest is a new online interior design consulting firm which helps translate parents online design inspiration from Pinterest or Houzz into real-life, well-designed rooms- bridging the gap between traditional full-service interior design and D.I.Y. If you’re rubbing your pregnant belly and spending hours on Pinterest or Houzz picking your favorite items, but have zero idea how to create a nursery from them, YouthfulNest is your answer. Lisa’s blog is full of amazing nursery inspiration as well as D.I.Y tips for creating unique designs and items for your dream nursery – on a budget!

Why is YouthfulNest so affordable? In a world of Pinterest boards and Houzz favorites, it makes it so easy to share ideas back and forth.
