Angelique All Day: Maternity Workout Clothing

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

We are so excited to introduce you to pregnant mama, and new guest blogger, actress Angelique Cabral! Angelique is best known for her role as Colleen on CBS’ Life In Pieces, but is no newcomer to the Hollywood scene. She recently found out she is having a little girl this fall and Gugu Guru is thrilled to help her with her registry; Angelique will be guest blogging on Gugu Guru all about pregnancy and new mom life – welcome, Ang!
(PS. The amazing drawing of Angelique above is from Lane Paper Works!)

Hiiiiiiieeeeee! First, you should know a bit about me: I am an actress, currently starring on the CBS sitcom, “Life in Pieces.” I play a quirky, hot mess girl named Colleen, who is based at this point almost entirely on me, ha! As an actress, social media is a huge part of who I am and what I do, and this new invention of #snapchat and #insta-story (I’m old so to me it seems like the cool new thing) has really been a game changer. I find it’s a way to relate directly to my audience and share a bit of my daily life with the world. If you follow me (you can follow Angelique on Insta here), you will see that I’m a hot mess and that I am probably just like you!! I run out of gas! I love coupons! I love rosé #AllllllDay!!!

So I figured why not do this with my pregnancy? The first few months were torture, trying to “hide” it on social media, especially when I drink pretty much whenever I am allowed to or is socially acceptable. And this was the first thing my fans noticed: the absence of wine and/or a margarita in my hand!! Yikes!! But then I came out with my pregnancy in a cute Gender Reveal video that ET did, and the rest is history. I am now free to share every last amazing, magical, disgusting, real detail of my pregnancy! Lucky you!!

Now, the first thing that was a concern for me, as an actress and also as a vain (mid) 30-something who is always on a diet trying to lose those last 5 lbs, was MY WORKOUTS!!! What was I gonna do now that I was pregnant?! I scoured the internet (more on that later, but it’s dangerous and I just spiral deep) and overall it said to take it easy and not do hard core workouts; that it can affect the baby, you can bleed, etc. They basically treat pregnancy as a handicap. The problem with this is that I am very hard core. Like, my whole life, I have jumped from one hard core activity to another: marathons, Kung Fu, Bikram, Hot Vinyasa, cross fit etc. Since college I have worked out 5 to 6 days a week, often double workouts. It makes me feel good but also allows me to eat/drink pretty much whatever i want which let’s be honest is the point (wink!).

So instead of living in fear,  I listened to my doctor and my trainers at Tracy Anderson, and kept doing what I have been doing for the last 3 years: 2 hour workouts in roughly 87 degree rooms with 80% humidity. Hard core!! I also have incorporated intense hiking (my fave is Fryman Canyon in LA) and walking around my neighborhood, at least 5 miles a day.  Cause bottom line, Mommy has to go back to shooting her TV show roughly 2 weeks after giving birth, so I can’t just not workout! It’s simply not an option!! So I’ve kept doing what I’ve been doing, and guess what?! I’m fine! My pregnancy has been perfect! Baby is amazing! And no GD, no preeclampsia, no swelling! And I feel amazing! [editor’s note: this is Angelique’s fitness plan, which she mapped out with her doctor – please consult your doctor if you’re pregnant and would like to know more about working out!]

Except in my workout clothes (womp womp).

Ya. My clothes don’t fit. Like, not at all. Like somehow, overnight, my tight little body just expanded. The first thing that became a real problem, real quick were my boobs. They took on a life of their own. They were HUGE. Like, I’m normally a full A cup or maybe small B, but my overnight by boobs FELL OUT OF MY SPORTS BRAS and I’m looking at a D! and then my rib cage expanded roughly 4 inches so no shirts or tanks fit and I was miserable in my workouts.

Then my growing belly betrayed my workout pants. I thought for sure I would be okay in my LuLuLemons until at least the 3rd trimester. I mean, the whole point of $120 dollar spandex is to stretch right? WRONG. There is, in fact, a maximum they stretch and they were uncomfortable almost immediately, pushing into my abdomen, making any workout torture.

Ingrid and Isabel Tank Top + Leggings

But then, miracle of all miracles,  I discovered my saving graces, Belly Bandit, Boob, Bravado Designs, and Ingrid and Isabel. Against my will, I gave in to “maternity” workout gear, and haven’t looked back.

Here’s the 411 on bras: Bravado Ballet Bra and Body Silk Seamless Yoga Nursing Bra are my fave for just life. They are comfy and make you feel feminine and human and not like an overstuffed cow.  I am obsessed with the Boob Designs sports/nursing bra ’cause let me tell you, it keeps the girls IN and TIGHT and gives you great cleavage. Boob also has an amazing long spandex nursing tank top that I wear almost every day. Even though I’m not nursing yet, it fits better than anything I’ve found and makes me feel cute during my workouts, which let’s be honest, is why we all workout, ha!!

(left) Ingrid and Isabel Pants, (right) Boob Designs Tank Top and Belly Bandit Leggings

Now for leggings: Belly Bandit leggings are my dream. They are supportive and cool and comfy for daily wear, and makes my growing belly feel and look so cute!! For my hard core workouts, I love Ingrid and Isabel workout leggings, they are thicker and really hold you in while doing cardio, and they have this cute V in the back that is sexy and fun! I literally get compliments on them every time I wear them. They also have this fold down option if you want your belly to be on display so you can show it off. But during my workouts I prefer to keep it up and protect my belly. Ingrid and Isabel also has a full line of tanks and dresses that I have been living in, even to events and red carpets! (Sidenote: I’m a big fan of “body con” during pregnancy, it shows off you bump and makes you look less humungous if you wear tight fitting clothes vs. baggy stuff).

So, there ya go. My first blog!! That wasn’t so bad!!! I hope it was fun and helpful to y’all since let’s be honest, we are all just doing our best, trying to figure our growing bodies out. I’m 27 weeks in, and every day there are new surprises and I can’t wait to share them all with you. It really helps being able to chat it out, and I’m excited to hear from you! Tweet me or tag me on insta and tell me whatcha think of my workout picks, and tell me your faves!
Til next time!

Babywearing Essential: Baby K’tan Nautical Print

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

-Sponsored Post-

It’s no secret that we’re big fans of babywearing, and when it comes to carriers, we can’t say enough great things about Baby K’tan. With its patented double-loop design, the Baby K’tan slips on like a t-shirt – no fuss, from the baby or yourself – the K’tan makes babywearing as simple as can be. K’tan recently released their print collection, and the nautical print carrier is your perfect summer accessory.

The Baby K’tan nautical print (and all of their prints) is made of a 100% natural cotton patterned with beautiful vibrant prints. The carrier’s unique one-way stretch and soft fabric offer you and your little a wonderfully cozy hold. The Baby K’tan is known for their ergonomic positioning for healthy infant development and comfort for parents, as it evenly distributes weight across back and shoulders.

The Baby K’tan can be used from 8 to 35 pounds, and comes with a sash, so you can utilize all 6 possible babywearing positions. We love the Baby K’tan, especially for c-section mamas, as you can wear your infant high above your c-section incision. Plus the material is super soft, and it could not be easier to put on, and take off, the carrier. And, most importantly, it’s washable!

You can find Baby K’tan on their website, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.

Thank you to Baby K’tan for making this sponsored post possible.

The Ultimate Travel Registry for Flying With an Infant

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Hey there, I’m Stephanie, blogger, wife and mama to a wild toddler boy and a little girl babe on the way. Our family loves to travel, whether it be for a new adventure or to visit family and friends, so we managed to rack up quite a few frequent flyer miles for our first born well before his first trip around the sun was complete. Considering his passport was stamped for the very first time at just 4 months old, I’ve managed to learn quite a few lessons about flying with an infant (and sadly, many of them were learned the hard way) and I can’t wait to share them with you. All of the recs and tidbits below are tried and tested by yours truly, so buckle up! You can follow our current adventures on my blog, Olive and Tate, and on Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest.

Gear
Ergo 360
I always, always recommend that mamas plan to wear their babies on travel days. The benefits are endless: you can wear baby through security, your hands are free and baby is soothed by being snuggled up to mama. I’ve tried managing travel days in wraps and a classic Ergo but, without a doubt, the Ergo 360 is the way to go. It’s provides back support in a way that most other carriers don’t and I learned after a 3 hour flight spent in the aisle rocking a heavy baby that back support is key.

Car Seat Gate Check Bag
I’m a little embarrassed to admit how long it took me to realize that we needed to protect our car seat when flying. We always gate check our car seat (with the exception of one single time and our car seat was lost -as a heads up, if the airline loses your car seat, they lend you one they keep on hand…trust me, you want to gate check your car seat).  Anyway, when you gate check your car seat it will be subjected to the elements, the extremely dirty luggage hold and a luggage convener belt known to rip fabric. If you travel infrequently, I highly suggest the $13 dollar bag but if you are a family that flies regularly, I would invest in this Car Seat Padded Bag.

Baby Jogger City Tour Stroller
A stroller with one hand fold, backpack straps and a weight of just 14lbs? This stroller was designed for travel and after a trip or two with another brand, I will never travel with any other stroller brand than Baby Jogger. This little baby will fit through the security x-ray when folded and will be easy enough for a parent traveling alone to fold at the gate for gate checking.

Dockatot and Dockatot Travel Bag
Not only will the Dockatot give your baby a cozy spot to snuggle on planes and trains–  once you reach your destination the Dockatot is a safe place for your babe to snuggle, lounge and get in some tummy time.

For Mama
Chewbeads
First, let me say that the list of must haves for mama is small – make sure your phone is charged, your chargers are packed and you aren’t wearing anything that will set off the security alarms. Chewbeads are great option as they are plastic and baby can play and gnaw on them during the flight.

Diaper Bag
An absolute must for a travel day with a baby on board is a diaper bag with both a cross body and backpack strap option (if you prefer canvas, this is a great option). The last thing you need is to be wrangling a purse on your shoulder all day so throw a well made bag full of pockets on your back and keep your hands free.

Car seat cover
A soft fabric car seat cover that can double as a nursing cover, scarf of blanket will serve you oh so well. Use it to nurse on the plane, shield a sleeping babe’s eyes from the sun or as a blanket for you and baby.

Paci/Bottle Wipes
There cannot be a more disgusting place than an airport or airplane so plan to pack paci wipes. If your babe has an arm like mine did, you’ll be fishing pacis from underneath seats no matter how many extra you have on hand.

For Baby
Baby Shusher
White noise is a baby win, no matter where you are, so keep it on hand to drown out flight attendant announcements and chatty seat mates.

Wubbanub
I prefer Wubbanubs for travel days simply because they are easy to find in my diaper bag! When digging around blind in the bottom of my bag, snagging that stuffed animal is like hitting the jackpot.

Light weight blankets
Thin, light weight blankets like those from aden + anais that can be folded or rolled in your diaper bag will serve oh so many purposes on travel day – wiping spit up, creating a place to play on a layover and fending off cold air vents. I usually pack two – one that is only used once in the airport for playtime on a layover and one that is saved for emergencies.

Toys
Teething babes will love having a Sophie to slobber on and the squeeky sound will be drowned out by the plan so you won’t have to worry about your seat mates. I always suggest bringing along toys that can be machine washed and that you and baby are not attached to, just in case it gets lost in the shuffle of travel day. Plus, a new toy captivates even the littlest traveler’s interest.

Disposable Changing Pads
This is a no brainer for me – I really don’t love using my changing pad on an airport bathroom changing table and then rolling it back up and sticking it in my bag. Disposable is the way to go – just stick a few in your bag (they are super flat and light) and be glad you aren’t carrying around a dirty changing pad.

Extra Onesies
Altitude can affect baby’s tummy so be prepared with a back up outfit or two.

Mixie Bottles
If you’re a formula mom like me, Mixie bottles will save your sanity. I keep them in my bag, locked and loaded with formula and water (added after security), ready to help with baby’s ears or for a meal mid-flight where I don’t have room to whip up a bottle.

You can read more of my infant travel advice, including my step by step guide on a solo travel day, on my blog!

Baby may be covered in the stroller, but now your phone and hands can be covered too. Talk, text and stay toasty with this fleece-lined, water-resistant stroller hand muff. It features an innovative clear zip pocket that lets you see and operate your phone through the window, with a special port for headphones. Securely attach it to any stroller with the snap-together tabs so you can stay warm and “on call” as you stroll.

Babywearing: The New Free-to-Grow Tula

by Gugu Guru 1 Comment

We’re huge fans of babywearing here at Gugu Guru, and even more so of the fantastic Tula Carriers, which are not only gorgeous, but super comfortable for babies and parents. We’re so excited about Tula’s new carrier, the Free-to-Grow Carrier. The new carrier is an adjustable baby carrier designed to grow with families from baby’s early infancy through toddlerhood.

Coming in four gorgeous styles, Wonder, Blossom, Play, and Discover, each pattern is symbolic for stages of childhood. Blossom symbolizes the quickly growing and delicate beauty of a baby; Play celebrates how babies express joy and happiness; Wonder pays homage to the boundless curiosity that leads to all of the cherished moments of childhood; and Discover is inspired by the early awestruck moments your little one has when they learn new and exciting things.

Why is the Free-to-Grow Carrier so special? Well, in addition to all of the features of Baby Tula’s regular inward-facing, two-position standard carriers, the Free-to-Grow Carrier also offers adjustable settings for width and height, ensuring proper, ergonomic positioning throughout the different stages of babies’ development. The carrier maintains the elegant silhouette and intuitive, easy-to-use design that Tula has always been recognized for. It’s amazing how adjustable this carrier is; literally every aspect is adjustable to ensure proper safety and comfort for both parent and baby/toddler. You can adjust the width of the seat, and height of the carrier; plus, adjust the super padded straps to ensure comfort for the parent.

The Tula Free-to-Grow Carrier is the perfect carrier for parents who love to travel; it’s lightweight, very stylish, and since it’s easily adjustable for babies to toddlers, you can switch it up and alternatively carry your baby and older kids while out and about. The ergonomic seat for proper positioning means that you can wear baby for a long time, knowing they are being safely carried and are comfortable. Plus, you can back carry in the Free-to-Grow, too! The carrier also has a large pocket, ideal for your phone and keys.

Our editor checked out the Free-to-Grow and couldn’t believe at how easy it was to adjust the whole carrier and make it work for you and your baby. It’s lightweight enough to stuff inside a diaper bag, and the designs are really just as gorgeous as they look on the screen.

Luckily, the Booker Coat from B & me is the perfect transitional piece of clothing for any woman’s wardrobe. This coat, which comes in black and gray, can be worn three ways: as a regular coat; or as a maternity coat; or as a coat to wear over your child in a separate baby carrier. It can be worn in the fall, spring, warmer winter days or even the coldest winter days with layering. This coat, which comes in small, medium, or large features a two-way center vertical zipper and invisible zippers on the jacket sides for adjustable room. For the busy mama on the run, you can easily throw your phone or keys into the pockets with the tandem two-way zippers, each above the front pockets; the coat has 4 pockets in all.  The bottom of the coat has adjustable drawstring to help you with all the different size transitions. PS. B & me also has an adorable and warm vest, and coats for men too!

Beluga Baby Wrap: When it’s chilly out, baby wants to be snug and close to your warm body. We’re big fans of the super soft wraps from Beluga Baby. The wrap is suitable for babies to 25 pounds, and is a wonderful way to tote baby around in the colder weather. Beluga Baby wraps are made from sustainable bamboo fabric, safe for baby and very soft on their sensitive skin, too! Newlie Gray Louise Backpack Diaper Bag: Let’s be honest, when we become moms, we know we need a diaper bag, but we also want to look stylish and put-together, especially in the cold weather when we’re covered up from head to toe! Luckily, Newlie makes the most functional and stylish diaper bags. The Louise Backpack Diaper Bag can be worn as both a backpack and a shoulder bag. Even better, this is the perfect transitional baby bag. With their signature interior insulated pocket, you can store baby bottles during the diaper years and snacks as during the toddler years. This bag will hold all of your cold weather essentials – gloves, hats, scarves – for both mama and baby. Plus, this diaper bag can be worn as a backpack if you’re babywearing during the winter!

Koolaburra by UGG Cable Boot: Keep your feet toasty and warm this winter with the Koolaburra by UGG Cable Boots. Festival fashion at its finest, the Cable combines soft suede and look-at-me tassels create a boho-chic boot with style to spare. A flirty fringe exterior evokes a vintage vibe, while a combo of plush sheepskin, faux fur, and a cushioning Thinsulate sockliner delivers that coveted, comfort-for-days feeling.

Back to Work With The Nurse Purse

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

With my first child three years ago I lugged the standard issue Medela pump carrying case back and forth to the office and hated every beige minute of it. Before heading back to work after my second baby I was determined to find a more convenient, and stylish, solution. Enter The Nurse Purse.

I love having a cute bag to carry all my pumping needs from home to subway to office. But the Nurse Purse is so much more than a cute purse. The bag is pretty large and has a number of pockets to carry all of your work and pumping accoutrements which means you can grab it off your desk and go pump without worry that you’re missing something. The bag has a panel in the front that unzips to access your pump controls so there’s no need to remove the pump from the bag. The bag itself is plastic coated and easily wipes off any drips that may land on it. It seems very well made and I anticipate it lasting long past the past day that I need to pump.

The Nurse Purse

I have only a few minor “room to improve” thoughts about the Nurse Purse. I wish the purse didn’t have the words Nurse Purse stitched onto a label on the outside of the bag; I’d prefer a more incognito pump transportation experience. I currently have, and love, a Spectra pump which doesn’t fit into the pump compartment of the Nurse Purse (but I was happy to find that you can remove this compartment entirely!) I have no problem fitting the pump into the bag or accessing the controls via the front panel but the inside is more cluttered than it might be with a different pump. I also have slightly too little space in the bag. If I’m carrying my pump, a cooler bag with bottles, some pump attachments and my laptop there is no room left for my lunch.

The Nurse Purse

I highly recommend the Nurse Purse to working breastfeeding mothers.

Wanderlust Must: DockATot

by Gugu Guru 10 Comments

This week we are so excited to be featuring amazing products ideal for traveling with baby. Today we’re highlighting the ever popular DockATot, the ultimate lounger for baby!

DockATot is a multifunctional and ultra stylish baby lounger.  The unique shape and design allow babies to comfortably lounge, play, snuggle and log in some tummy time. The idea is that your little one feels snuggled in a safe haven that feels a lot like the womb. The bumpers are made with a special air-permeable fabric that makes DockATot particularly worry-free. If you’re traveling, the DockATot is the ultimate piece of baby gear to tote along because it’s a wonderful place for baby to lounge and relax while you’re on your journey.

Airplane Tips with Baby
Fear of airplane travel with a baby is definitely a thing for new parents. If you’re well prepared then all will be ok. Here, some of the best plane tips for traveling with baby courtesy of DockATot:

  • Bring extra changes of clothes for baby. We love the cheap white onesies you can buy in sets. If there’s a diaper explosion or a major spit-up, you won’t feel bad just tossing the onesie in the nearest trash can.
  • Bring extra changes of clothes for you! If said poop or throw up lands on you, you’re going to want to get those clothes off pronto.
  • Invest in some noise-canceling headphones. There’s nothing worse than a sleeping baby being awoken to an announcement on the loudspeaker letting everyone know that the seatbelt sign is off.
  • Try and book a flight time that coincides with baby’s nap schedule.
  • Bring your DockATot Deluxe on the plane with you! The Deluxe size can easily be carried on and fits perfectly into the seat, making it super cozy for the little ones. All the better for them to lounge! Invest in a new DockATot travel bag, so you can easily transport your dock anywhere you go.

Dealing With Nap Time While On Vacation
While it’s tempting to stray from baby’s nap schedule while away from home, don’t do it. Proper sleep time is so important to their growth and development. Rather than sending your entire family back to the hotel room for each nap time, here are some ways to still enjoy your trip while making sure baby gets proper sleep.

  • Trade off nap-sitting times. Take turns with your significant other. One of you watches the baby while the other gets to cross something off their personal vacation bucket list. Sounds like a good deal to us!
  • If you’ve rented a car, take a scenic drive during baby’s nap time while they snooze in their carseat.
  • Plan meal time to coincide with their naps. Make sure to bring a reclining stroller so they can snooze while you enjoy a long and relaxing adult meal.

Traveling with baby may seem daunting at first, but knowing you have a safe and cozy place for baby to rest will keep everyone calm and happy.

You can follow DockATot on their website, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

Gift Guide for Traveling Mamas

Smockingbirds Pajamas: Anytime you go on vacation, it’s always fun to have a new set of pajamas to rock in a hotel room. We’re big fans of Smockingbird’s pajamas because not only are they super soft, but incredibly personalized! The pajamas can be personalized and you get to pick the color of the thread and which font you like (they have 16 to choose from). Not only are these pajamas super adorable, but the long sleeves will keep your little one (the smallest size is 3 months) warm in cool hotel rooms – or a cool house in summertime. They make a wonderful baby shower gift for second or third time mamas, because you can get baby’s name on it!
