What’s New on Gugu: April 24, 2019

by Abby Ludwig Leave a Comment

This week’s new finds highlight some great Earth Day friendly selections. Reusable food pouches, baby food makers, and food grade silicone bottles are all great new items for the eco-friendly family. You will also notice some pop culture trends popping up this week. Baby Shark anyone? For loads of our other favorites, please check out our Explore page!

Baby Brezza Food Makers and Reusable Pouches: Earth Day celebrations always remind me to make smart choices regarding the products we use in everyday life. Baby Brezza has continued to make the ‘homemade baby food game’ a reality with easy to use machines and reusable pouches! Simply pop your favorite fruit and/or veggies in the container (love the Glass for eco-friendly or the new Deluxe) and watch them cook and blend with ease. Pour any delicious mixture into the reusable pouch and you’re good to go! Added bonus – the pouches are top-rack dishwasher safe!

Hatch Maternity x Nordstrom: As we (not so) patiently await the arrival of Baby Sussex, it has become much easier to attain our own ‘Markle Sparkle!’ The new collaboration between Hatch Maternity and Nordstrom highlights items from a brand we love so much. Pair together classic tops, pants, and dresses to keep things comfy and chic!

Baby Shark Toys and Walker: The ‘Baby Shark’ craze doesn’t seem to be leaving us anytime soon. Wowwee, the brains behind ‘Fingerlings’ continue to create engaging toys for our little ones. We have a love/hate relationship with their line of singing shark characters, which will instantly burn that catchy tune into your brain! Plus, coming in October is their newest toy, a brand new Baby Shark inspired walker for baby.

Boon NURSH Silicone Bottles: Another Earth Day find, the Boon NURSH bottle system utilizes a special bagged venting system that is reusable. Ideal for preventing gas, easily squeeze the silicone pouch to remove any excess air before feeding your babe. Plus, all parts are dishwasher safe!

Skip Hop Greenwich Convertible Hip Pack: With Mother’s Day around the corner, we love this sleek take on the fanny pack. Great for travel, we love this new hands-free accessory to hold the essentials. Pair with a diaper bag for an excellent gift for any mama-to-be!

Please note that these opinions are 100% my own. I have not received any products in exchange for placement in What’s New on Gugu!

These are strictly some of our favorite items that I want to share with you! For loads of our other favorites, please check out our Explore page!

Gabri Isle’s Spring Collection: One of our favorite children’s clothing lines makes high-quality European clothing accessible in the US. We love that they focus on highlighting female-driven brands and love the high-quality items they sell. Plus, they offer a wide variety of styles from all different price points. Great addition to any registry!

MiliMili Wearable Blanket: Made in the USA, MiliMili’s wearable blanket is a lightweight sleepsack, which will keep your little one safely bundled up in his/her crib. Utilizing a bamboo jersey fabric, this sleepsack soft, naturally anti-microbial, and great for sensitive skin!

Lalo ‘The Daily’ Stroller: The latest innovation to hit the stroller market, Lalo is a Scandinavian inspired stroller that promises to streamline the stroller game. Minimalist in design and style, this stroller is an excellent choice for urban families. Look out soon for the convertible version, which will be able to accommodate two kiddos!

Baby Says Chalkboard Shoes: This brand new adorable line of infant footwear was created by a mom who wanted to help older children interact with their new baby siblings. Baby Says shoes have a chalkboard bottom and are available in both moccasin and sneaker style. Each shoe purchase comes with one white chalkboard marker, which will easily erase from your little one’s shoes. Purchase today and let the bonding through artwork commence!

Trend Lab Galaxy Caddy: This ginormous diaper caddy is a perfect addition to any changing station. We love this minimalist caddy, which is lightweight and easy to carry around the house. Plus the Galaxy pattern is gender neutral and will blend in with any nursery décor.

The world of baby/toddler gear is always being inundated with new, cool items! Our job at Gugu Guru is to help you sort through all the ‘fluff’ and figure out what items will be a great pick for your lifestyle and taste. Each week I will be sharing some items that we at Gugu Guru think should be at the top of your list to check out. Some of these items are brand new to the market and others are oldies but goodies that you may not know about. For loads of our other favorites, please check out our Explore page!

Evenflo Balance + Wide Glass Baby Bottles : Created with Pediatric feeding specialists, the new glass bottle by Evenflo is a great option for eco-friendly parents! They have truly thought of everything, using shock-resistant tempered glass and a uniquely shaped nipple leading to a perfect latch. We also love the venting system, which will ensure that your little one doesn’t suck up any extra air. A great new glass feeding option!

Fusion Gates: Finally a stylish and artistic solution to the need for safety gates! The contemporary look of Fusion Gates can be further personalized to your taste with their interchangeable art screens. They truly become an art piece in your home! We also love that they can be installed with pressure mount or hardware options.Edushape Tub Sub: As a former Early Childhood and Kindergarten teacher, I love to find toys that help my kids learn while having a blast. Edushape hits the nail on the head with all of their products, which have been created to get kids to think. Their new Tub Sub will help your little one learn all about buoyancy during bath time. Plus, it’s easy to clean, which as any seasoned parent will tell you is a MUST for bath toys!

Freshly Picked Mom Clothing: A beloved moccasin company finally launched a line for Mom this Fall! Full of fun and adorable sneakers, clothing, and purses, they offer classic items in high quality fabrics. We also love the option to ‘match your little’ with coordinating t-shirts and bags!

Wash. It. Later. Bags: Perfect for on-the-go parents, Wash. It. Later. bags are the solution to life’s messiest moments with baby. Leak-proof, liquid safe bags will both hold the messy items and begin to soak them in a cleaning solution (free of harsh chemicals and all-natural) until you get to the washing machine. Great for travel and an excellent option for your gym bag messes as well!

As Seen at The Chicago Baby Show

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Chicago-based Gugu Guru Registry Consultants, Abby and Lauren, hit the Chicago Baby Show Here’s a round up and sneak peek of some of the new and cool products they saw at the show.

Coral UV – This sterilizer and dryer doesn’t use any water so pretty much anything can go in it from bottles to toys to remote controls and more. The product uses UV light to sterilize. Plus it’s a good size to hold items, but also not so big that it takes up a lot of space.

Japanese company, The People Toy Co., is known for creating innovative and fun products for babies and children. The Mochi line of teethers and toys are comprised of 51% food-grade rice and are free of harmful adhesives and paints. You can’t get more eco-friendly than that. Their People Blocks Toys are 6 piece sets, great for toddlers, great for travel, magnetic and don’t make a ton of noise! Their Brain Builders is a line made for baby that matches certain developmental stages. They also have a development guide to help parents understand why certain toys are great for certain ages.

Momma Gourmet: Momma Gourmet is a local Chicago subscription service that will ship you organic produce to make your own baby food weekly! Comes with instruction/recipe cards, enough organic produce for leftovers (great for multiples!) and will introduce food in a way to help identify allergies (if they are present).

Nomi by Evomove: This was hands down our favorite new product! It is created by the people who came up with the Stokke Tripp Trapp as an updated version to the highchair. It will also convert to a baby seat and a chair that will hold up to 300lbs.

Love to Dream Sleep Suit: Such a soft alternative for older babies once they have outgrown the sleepsack stage. This lightweight material is like sleeping wrapped in a cloud!

Micuna Bassinet and Bassinet Luce: A great bedside bassinet ready to help you through the early days. Also completely customizable to have it match the style you are looking for.

Micralite Strollers by Silver Cross: Three different strollers to meet everyone’s needs with lots of easy to use functions at an affordable price.

Back to Preschool Fashion & Function

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Have a kiddo heading back to preschool? Shana, a real Gugu Guru mama of a two-year-old, tells us about her back to preschool style must-haves for where fashion meets function.

The Backpack
Back to Preschool Tula backpack

Tula Kids Backpack
Fashion certainly meets function with the Tula Kids Backpack. As the mom of a back to preschool aged daughter who still rocks some 18-24 month clothes, I was hard pressed to find a backpack that would fit her small frame and not overwhelm her! The Tula Kids Backpack was the perfect trifecta – fashionable, functional (it’s water-resistant), and scaled down for smaller frames. It’s roomy enough that she can grow with it, and it’s high quality enough and durable enough to guarantee that she WILL grow with it!

The Empowerment Pieces
“I want to do it!” “ I do it myself!” Familiar phrases if you have a toddler or preschooler. Having a fiercely independent preschooler, I love anything that empowers her to do things on her own. This is especially true when it comes to clothes and shoes. Since one of my not-so-secret joys is buying her cute clothes, I’m always looking for quality and ease, without sacrificing style.

Back to Preschool clothes

Dapper + Crown
This uber stylish, classic children’s clothing line is designed by a mom and made in Los Angeles. Think wide-leg pants with elastic waistbands, breezy kimono style tops, and pull on skirts that are great in the warmer weather and can be layered for cooler weather. I particularly love the Dylan pants because they’re so easy for my little one to pull on and they look great dressed up or down. I mean, wide leg linen pants with little slanted pockets! Doesn’t get cuter than that.

Me Do
Every girl (and boy) has got to have their basics! Me Do does double duty – not only do they have basic tees and sweats for play, but the clothing features the Me Do Bunnies. Your child will learn the front from the back when they see the Me Do Bunny’s face on the front and the bunny’s tush on the back. Bonus: if your child has sensory issues or is just plain sensitive to tags and such, the clothes are tagless and have soft seams.

Back to Preschool boots

pediped Footwear
You may know pediped for their walkers, but did you know they make big kids shoes too? Flex is the brand’s line of rubber soled sneakers, boots and sandals that are great for little feet and cute to boot (pun intended!) I adore boots and apparently it’s genetic because my daughter loves them too. The Flex Eclipse boots are comfy, stylish and happen to be vegan (if that’s your thing.) Plus, if you’re like me and buy shoes with a bit of room to grow, but don’t want your little one clomping around like Frankenstein (which also leads to trips and falls), you’ll love their Flex Fit System, an additional insert that can reduce the shoe by almost half a size. Budget conscious mamas rejoice!

For Avoiding Mix-ups

Back to Preschool label

Stuck on You
Preparing for the first day of school, I realized that I needed labels! The Basic Mini Iron On Labels from Stuck on You were an easy choice. With a ton of color and font options, I settled on pretty pastels. They were on in seconds and I’ve had no issues with fading or peeling!

Work at Home Mom Must Haves: Part 1

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

In our first installment of essentials for the work at home mom, Alex – mom of three with one on the way – is chatting about teethers, diaper bags, maternity clothes, and why a Crane USA humidifier is an essential for any house. Check out Alex on her blog and Instagram – and see all of our mom types here, too.

Lou Lou Lollipop Teether: This teether is amazing — I love that it’s got a sturdy clip that even a strong-willed toddler can’t yank off!  The quality of the actual teether is soooo sturdy and is the perfect firmness for those achy teething baby gums that need some gnawing relief on an adorable donut!

Skip Hop Diaper Bag Backpack, Forma: I absolutely love this backpack — it is spacious to fit alllll of my baby/toddler/mom gear yet compact enough that it doesn’t feel like it’s a steamer trunk and takes up a bunch of room.  I just LOVE the stroller clips so I can clip this bad boy on the back of my stroller when we’re out and about and I have quick access to all of my essentials!  I just love it!

GoodbodyGoodmommy Maternity Leggings and Multitasking Cardigan: Holy cats.  These are hands-down my favorite FAVORITE maternity (and probably postpartum too!) gear!  They are made out of super soft material that feels sooooo good on my stretched out sore pregnant body.  I absolutely love the cardigan, which is perfect for both pregnancy and postpartum nursing sessions!  The support band in the maternity leggings is my most favorite thing ever, because my belly tends to carry 9+ pound babies and this will be the best support ever for that and my back.  I just love these both SO MUCH! (See more on the multitasking cardigan here, too)

Crane USA Elephant Humidifier: This humidifier is not only practical (helllllo winter dryness!) but also freaking adorable.  I love the elephant design and love even more that I can adjust the intensity of the humidifier (aka make it last all night long!) as well as the direction it is spraying towards.  It’s also super easy to refill and clean!

Stay tuned for more Work at Home Mom Picks from Alex!

Transitioning Your Maternity Clothing from Summer to Fall with Stowaway Collection

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

When it comes to maternity clothing, it can be hard to find the balance of what to buy – you don’t want to invest too much money in a new wardrobe because you’re only going to need it for a limited amount of time, but you also want to make sure you feel amazing for the time you’ll be wearing the clothing. We always recommend to pregnant mamas to invest in pieces which can be worn multiple seasons and transition from one season to another. One of our favorite brands of maternity wear is Stowaway Collection (we even love the name!) and we wanted to highlight how they suggest transitioning your summer wardrobe over to Fall. PS. Stowaway Collection is having a giant end of season sale starting August 10th until Labor Day!

Stowaway Collection’s maternity dresses are the perfect investment pieces for pregnant women because they transition so easily from one season to the next. This Knock Out Maternity Dress (pictured above) is super cool for summertime with sneakers or flats, and can be easily worn into Fall with a denim jacket, matching scarf and booties. The Uptown Maternity Dress featured in the header image would be perfect for summer date nights with heels and a long necklace, and also look amazing in the Fall with a leather jacket and matching leather boots.

Left: Uptown Maternity Dress; Right: Knock Out Maternity Dress

When it comes to investing in pieces for multiple seasons, you want to keep in mind that they should be neutral colors, a fabric which isn’t too thin or thick, and short sleeves or tank tops are ideal, because you can easily throw on a jacket or cardigan as the weather gets cooler. All of the Stowaway Collection dresses would be super cute with flip-flops, heels, booties, or high boots, and their modern style lends way for pairing with both a chunky cardigan or a super hip leather jacket. Stowaway Collection also has maternity tops, maternity bottoms, date night looks, and tips on how to transition your maternity clothing postpartum.

Shout Outs to the Originals

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Today we want to give recognition to some of the originals out there.  Baby brand originals we mean. Like any other major industry, the baby industry has its fair share of knock-offs. Knock-offs can come from all different sources – sometimes they come from overseas, sometimes they come from industry giants who swipe and tweak a concept from a smaller brand or shop, and many times – believe it or not – small brands steal ideas from other small brands. While it seems almost impossible to squash this kind of idea theft in most instances, Gugu Guru did want to do our part to give a shout-out to some of our favorite innovators and originals today with the hopes that maybe you’ll consider supporting some of these brands when you shop in the future.

Ezpz is the the original all-in-one placemat + plate founded by Lindsey Laurain, a mom to three “wild and wonderful” boys who served as her inspiration. Lindsey created the ezpz Happy Mat because she was fed up with the messiness and clean-up time dedicated to each meal and needed a solution to make mealtime easier and less messy.

Founder Jamie Yetter breastfed all of her children and spent years searching for the perfect nursing cover-up. In 2012 (after the birth of her third daughter), she set out to come up with a solution. Covered Goods is the industry’s first four-in-one nursing cover—it can also be used as a car seat cover, shopping cart cover, or scarf.

The idea for Chewbeads began in 2009 shortly after the birth of founder Lisa Greenwald’s son. Like most babies, he loved to put everything in his mouth and necklaces were a favorite. Like most moms, Lisa didn’t feel comfortable letting him chew on them, with concern that they might break or have unwanted chemicals. As a veteran of the fashion industry, Lisa set out to create soft, non-toxic baby teether jewelry, which was colorful, chic and, above all else safe. Hence, Chewbeads!

Founder Jessica Rakos came up with the design of Bellifly during her pregnancy with her middle baby. Like so many moms-to-be, she found sleeping on her side to be uncomfortable once her belly started getting big enough to pull on her spine. Belly wedges just weren’t cutting it and traditional maternity pillows didn’t give her the belly support she was looking for… plus, she didn’t want to spend a fortune! Using her limited sewing skills, she constructed a version of a “perfect” pillow and Bellifly was born.

Amy Maurer Creel founded Smart Mom after her sister-in-law died suddenly of an undiagnosed congenital heart defect. Smart Mom LLC is a truly unique company staffed entirely by Moms. A safe alternative for fashion-loving moms available exclusively at buybuy BABY, Teething Bling by Smart Mom combines the functionality of a superior teether with accessory-fun style. The chic, 2″ x 2″ doughnut-shaped pendant is made of food-safe silicone.

Anyone who knows Gugu Guru, knows that we just LOVE the Fridababy Snot Snucker. Fridababy was founded by mompreneur extraordinaire, Chelsea Hirschhorn. When it comes to the innovation, design and development behind the brand’s line, Chelsea says she can tie each of Fridababy’s products to a very specific pain point that she has personally experienced navigating parenthood over the past years.

On a family vacation, founder Carla Schneider was desperate to soothe her newborn son, who would fuss whenever his pacifier went missing. In an aha moment, she took a hotel sewing kit and a plush toy and created what is now, 18 years later, an extremely successful invention called The WubbaNub.

Amy and Julie are the two ‘mumtrepreneurs’ who started Cheeky Chompers while on maternity leave with their first children. The Neckerchew was born after countless dropped, dirty and lost teethers. Not to mention a gaggle of dribbling babies! Sometimes the simplest ideas really are the best: if the teether won’t stay put, why not attach it to the baby?

Why do we encourage you to consider supporting the originals when possible?
Well, for one, in our industry many of the innovators are moms – a group that we generally like to support and lift up, seeing that Gugu Guru is also mom-founded.

Another big and arguably more important reason is safety – especially when it comes to poorly manufactured knock-offs. Our resident safety expert, Alison Jacobson AKA Safety Mom strongly suggests you don’t opt for a knock off just because of the price. “We all know how expensive it can be “gearing up” for a baby and, while it’s not necessary to purchase high-end items, it’s critical that you purchase items that meet the safety standards developed by the Consumer Products Safety Commission. Now more than ever moms are shopping online and it’s tempting to shop the deals – but make sure you’re buying from a company that adheres to all U.S. testing requirements. The Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association is a great site to determine if a company is meeting all safety standards. Saving a few dollars is not worth the risk of your baby’s safety.”
