1. Little Giraffe Leg Warmers: Okay, so we know this isn’t your typical travel essential, but we can explain. Often times when traveling with baby, especially on an airplane, the weather, temperature, and overall air of the airplane can shift quickly. There isn’t always enough time to change baby’s clothes if they’re hot or cold, so we’re loving Little Giraffe Leg Warmers for baby’s first airplane ride. You can carry them easily in your purse or bag and if baby gets cold, just slip them on – and slip them off later as the temperature rises. Hint: you can also use them on baby’s arms too.

2. J.L. Childress Car Seat and Stroller Travel Bags: There are many different ways to travel with your car seat and stroller: you can check them as luggage, gate check them or bring them on the plane. The family team at J.L. Childress offers universal, airline certified car seat and stroller travel bags for every occasion! Their Ultimate Car Seat Travel Bag is the highest-rated car seat bag with backpack straps and full padding, and is perfect for checking your infant car seat as luggage. Their NEW Deluxe Spinner Wheelie Car Seat Travel Bag features four 360-degree spinner wheels and full padding, perfect for larger car seats and frequent travelers. Their Gate Check Bags for Car Seats and Strollers provide much-needed protection from dirt, germs, water and damage and are perfectly compact to store in your travel bag.

3. K’tan Baby Carrier: When you’re navigating the airport with a baby, you’re going to want to wear said baby so you can have your hands free! We’re huge fans of the K’tan for travel, as it’s lightweight and can easily be stuffed into any bag when not in use. It’s super comfortable for mama or daddy as well. Need to calm a crying baby on the flight? Walk up and down the airplane aisle wearing your baby in the K’tan and you’ll be good to go! With its patented double-loop design, the Baby K’tan slips on like a t-shirt – no fuss, from the baby or yourself – the K’tan makes babywearing as simple as can be.

4. b.box diaper wallet: When traveling, quick diaper changes are a must! We’re big fans of the b.box diaper wallet because it is the only diaper wallet with a built in wipes compartment and dual access to wipes. Wipes can be accessed inside when it’s change time, or if you need to quickly clean little fingers, grab a wipe from the external hatch. The wallet comes with an easy to clean changing pad and plenty of room for storage for two disposable diapers or even a spare change of clothes.

5. Goodbody Goodmommy Multitasking Cardigan: Going through an airport means carrying excess documents, food, tickets, and things you simply cannot lose. We’re loving the Goodbody Goodmommy Multitasking cardigan for travel, as it’s chic enough to get you into first class, but also a nursing cover, babywearing cover, and super soft for mama’s skin. If you’re going to be holding a baby on your lap during the flight, we highly recommend getting a Cardigan, as it can be a blanket for baby, too. Plus, it has POCKETS, so you don’t have to lose everything in your hands!

Top 5 Must-Have Essentials: Baby’s Nursery

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

We know that it can seem overwhelming to register for everything you may need for a baby; so, we’ve broken all the necessities down into your Top 5 Must Haves for every category you may need. Today we’re covering the Top 5 Must-Have Essentials for Baby’s Nursery – don’t forget to add them to your registry! Head to the bottom of the post for a handy checklist you can use to make sure you don’t forget any of these Top 5  Must-Have Essentials for Baby’s Nursery.

Crane Drop Humidifier: A humidifier is an essential item for any space which baby will be spending time and sleeping. The Drop Humidifiers from Crane feature a ultrasonic cool mist which increases moisture in the air for easier breathing and a good night’s sleep; whether it is in your bedroom, the living room, or baby’s room, wherever the family will spend time, or sleep, is a wonderful place to have a Drop Humidifier. It’s so important to have the right amount of humidity in bedrooms, as proper humidity relieves cough, cold, and flu symptoms, as well as nasal congestion, dry cough, sinus irritation, nose bleeds, and dry skin and hair. Furthermore, the clean control antimicrobial material in the base is proven to help reduce mold and bacteria growth up to 99.96%.

Blackout Curtains: Any new parent can tell you that babies sleep better when the room is pitch black; it takes babies a while to “figure out their days and nights,” and blackout curtains at night are an essential for helping baby sleep soundly. We’ve found that basic panel curtains are easy to install, come in a ton of colors, and really help keep the light out so baby can fall and stay asleep.

Baby Care by e–cloth® Safe Home Baby Care: It’s essential to keep a nursery clean and germ-free, but it can be very confusing for new parents to figure out what products to use to clean the nursery. We’re big fans of Baby Care by e–cloth®, because they are an amazing chemical-free way to keep your baby’s room clean. You know that clean smell in most places? The “clean” smell we’re used to are actually dangerous chemicals. 30% of childhood asthma is caused by exposure to chemicals in your home. And it starts with babyhood. The cloth is proven to remove over 99% of bacteria from a hard surface.  These cloths don’t kill bacteria, they collect bacteria from surfaces.  This is another benefit of all of those fibers – they literally scrape the surface clean at a microbial level.  The best part – when you run this cloth under hot water in your sink, all but .01% of that bacteria, dirt, oil and grease is released from the cloth down the sink.  So, there is virtually no transfer back onto clean surfaces. Keep your sweet little one’s nursery clean and toxin free by only cleaning with water. We’re big fans of Baby Care by e–cloth® – these mighty cleaning cloths are gentile, totally safe and remove 99.9% of all bacteria including e-coli and listeria.

Ubbi Diaper Pail: It’s essential to keep baby’s room free from disgusting smells, like diapers! The Ubbi Diaper Pail is made of powder-coated steel to achieve maximum odor control. It is equipped with rubber seals that are strategically designed to lock in odors as well as a sliding lid that minimizes air disruption, keeping the smell inside the pail. Offering a modern and sophisticated twist to a once very industrial product, the sleek Ubbi diaper pail includes a child-proof lock and is available in an array of 13 colors and 5 patterns. All the style and none of the smell — a promising solution for every nursery.

Little Giraffe Baby Blanket: What’s a nursery without a blanket to cuddle baby in? We think baby blankets are an essential for any nursery; even if your baby isn’t sleeping in their crib yet, we highly recommend spending time in the nursery to get them used to their space, and a soft blanket from Little Giraffe is a Must-Have item for your baby’s nursery. Their chenille baby blankets are incredibly soft and perfect for wrapping babies, toddlers, and kids up for a sweet snuggle. The Herringbone blanket pictured above comes in multiple colors and would make a great baby shower gift. However, Little Giraffe has a ton of blankets to choose from – in all different styles and colors – even polka dot and chenille with satin trim. Make sure you like the blanket, too, as many moms sleep with their baby’s blanket so it smells like mama!

Thank you to Ubbi, Crane, Little Giraffe, and E-Cloth for making this sponsored post possible.

Holiday Gift Idea: UviCube for the Technology Loving Mama

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

We’ve found the perfect holiday gift for all of the high tech and technology-obsessed parents you know! New parents (and seasoned ones) are all about keeping baby healthy and safe, especially during the germ season of Wintertime. Luckily, UviCube, a new essential baby item, is here to keep the things your baby loves totally germ-free! It is the first of its kind in the U.S. market, to dry, store and eliminate 99.9% of bacteria on surfaces exposed to UV light on items such as baby bottles, bottle nipples and pacifiers, but can also sanitize electronics, mobile phones, toys and other items your baby might like to touch or teethe on.

In the past, parents have used sterilizers and dishwashers to keep baby’s bottles free from germs and mold, but what about all of the other things baby may chew on or touch? UviCube uses direct UV light (without moisture or heat) to eliminate 99.9% of harmful bacteria to sanitize bottles, pacifiers, mobile phones, remote controls…if it’s in baby’s mouth or hands, UviCube will keep it clean! UviCube disinfects using low heat infra-red light bulb to dry and ultraviolet light – this means there’s no worry about burning your fingers taking hot bottles out to use – safe for mama and baby.

Not only is UviCube important because it keeps the bottles clean and sanitized, but it helps keep mama’s brain organized, because there won’t be bottles strewn about the counters all the time! You can store the bottles in the UviCube and take when needed, keeping them ready to go at all times. Baby drop a pacifier or toy? Just place it in the UviCube and disinfect. It’s so easy to use and safe for baby, parents, and your house. No more boiling water for bottles, pump parts, and nipples, the UviCube is able to safely disinfect anything you put in it. Baby love to play with your phone, or toddler watches videos? Don’t let germs spread in your house this holiday season – the UviCube is there for your keys, phone, and anything baby touches, play withs, or gnaws on.

This holiday season, UviCube wants you to focus on your family, and less time on cleaning! Instead of spending hours washing pump parts, bottles, and baby gear – throw it in the UviCube and focus on the important things, like your loved ones. If you’re traveling this season, make sure to disinfect everything as soon as you get back home; just place in the UviCube and let the UV light work its magic. The UviCube is an ideal gift, for anyone with kids, as it’s not just a baby product, it’s a family essential, for keeping everyone healthy, happy, and clean, year round.

Back to Sleep Day 11: 4moms Breeze

by Gugu Guru 9 Comments

This is hands-down, one of the coolest play yards out there. Any seasoned parent will tell you that play yards can be so dang confusing.  Some have this whole step-by-step process of popping up the sides and then pushing some button in the middle while the sides that you thought were popped in wind up collapsing on you… (Wait, yeah, that’s not the way it’s supposed to go but that’s been our experience and the experience of many others.) And that is why the team at Gugu Guru just loves the sleep-certified 4moms Breeze. Learn more about whether this product is a fit for your lifestyle and/or baby registry then enter to win one below.

GG_BacktoSleep_2016-36

Traveler

Aside from its general ease of use and the fact that it comes with a convenient travel bag, the 4moms Breeze is so sturdy and well made that it is sure to withstand the beating that traveling baby gear typically takes. From being stacked on to thrown on a conveyor belt, rest assured that the Breeze can take it and will still provide a comfy, familiar place for baby once you arrive at your destination.  The fact that both the play yard and bassinet attachment wipe clean with a damp cloth is also a bonus when you’re on the road frequently.

gadget

4moms is really THE gear brand for tech loving parents. The company actually doesn’t call itself a “baby gear company” but rather a “consumer technology company that leverages robotics, technology and innovative design to disrupt and redefine.”  With its one touch open and close feature, the Breeze doesn’t disappoint in terms of disrupting the category.

nofuss

4moms calls its Breeze “seriously easy” and we agree, hence our No Fuss badge here.  To open the Breeze, you just give one push.  To close the Breeze, you just pull a single time.  Anyone who has ever battled with a clunky play yard of the past will more than appreciate the ease of use that the Breeze has to offer.  Furthermore, there’s something to be said about “so easy to use that a grandparent can figure it out” and that definitely applies here.

DIY Burp Cloth Tutorial

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Let’s get crafty! See Kate Sew partners with Gugu Guru once again to share a fantastic DIY tutorial.  We’re all about nursing in this post co-sponsored by Momsense.

I’m so excited to be here sharing a burp cloth tutorial today! I’ve never really needed burp cloths before, my baby #3 is a little bit of a spitter!

momsense-10

We partnered with Momsense for this tutorial for Breastfeeding Awareness Month! The Momsense Smart Breastfeeding Meter is a new product that tracks how much your baby is eating! The meter has a pair of headphones equipped with a microphone that safely sticks to baby’s neck. The microphone amplifies her sucks and swallows for you to hear. It also has a little animation that goes with it and it translates the swallows to give you a good sense of how much milk your baby is getting!

burpcloth-1

My older daughter loves to listen in and it’s so fun to involve the kids and dad in the breastfeeding experience. I needed this meter about 6 years ago with my first when I was struggling with milk supply, so I’m so glad it’s on the market now!

momsense-4

My favorite part about the meter is how inspiring it is to a breastfeeding mama! It’s so neat to see and hear how effective your breastfeeding session is and is pushing us to get the best and longest breastfeeding experience possible. Read my full review on SeeKateSew.com to hear all about my struggle with supply and how the Momsense Smart Breastfeeding Meter has been a game changer for us!

momsense-9

Today we’re making burp cloths lined with absorbent towel material! I thought lemon fabric would be cute since we’re talking about eating! The back of the cloths are made from a towel. You can either use a pre-made towel or terry cloth material for the backing. The only other thing you need is the pattern (provided below) and basic sewing supplies.

burp-cloth-4

Let’s get started!

Materials:
–See Kate Sew Burp Cloth Pattern
-a store-bought towel or terry cloth material
-1/4 yard cotton ( lemon fabric source)

Print out the burp cloth pattern at 100% (do not scale). Cut off the overlap and tape the 3 pages together. It will look like this:

layout

tutorial

  1. Use the pattern piece to cut out 1 piece from cotton and 1 piece from your towel material.
  2. Put the cotton piece on top of the towel piece with the right sides together.
  3. Pin and sew the front and back together 3/8″ from the edges, leaving a 2-3″ opening on one side.
  4. Turn the burp cloth right side out through the opening you left. Press. Turn the opening edges in.
  5. Topstitch around the cloth 1/4″ from the edge. The opening will be closed as you do this.

You’re done! A little stack of these make a really cute shower gift (maybe paired with a Momsense meter!).

Daycare Must Haves Roundup!

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

The transition from baby being home to daycare can be perplexing: what are you supposed to bring? What does your baby need for the day? Gugu Guru interviewed many moms and daycare experts to find out exactly what your baby will need, and today we’re sharing our roundup of the must have products for daycare as well as sharing some tips to make the transition smoother.

Before you go back to work full time, we recommend that you do a test run for at least a couple weeks so you can get comfortable putting your baby in daycare. Dropping your baby off for a day or two in the weeks leading up to returning to work will help you establish a routine and feel more prepared mentally and emotionally.

Product Suggestions

BittaKidda

A “Safe” Lovie: Often times daycares don’t allow for lovies or blankies during naptime, as they can be a sleeping hazard; which is why we’re big fans of the BittaSack from Bitta Kidda! This 100% natural cotton sleepsack has two cotton velour lovies sewn onto the sleep sack, so baby can hold something soft while they are sleeping. These lovies will never get close to baby’s face, which means they are safe for even the smallest of babies to self-soothe with. If your baby loves to hold on to something while they sleep (which most do!), this is the perfect daycare accompaniment because it will help them get a great nap!

Family-Skincare

Sunscreen: Lots of daycares are wonderful about taking the babies and kids outside as much as possible! However, we got this great tip from mom Nicole F., “Don’t forget to bring sunscreen. Kids aren’t supposed to share!” Furthermore, as mom Beth K. said, “some of these daycares simply won’t apply the sunscreen,” and prefer the parents apply the sunscreen before the day begins. We’re big fans of Babo Botanicals sunscreen which is safe for baby’s skin and made without dairy, soy, peanuts, almonds, walnuts, SLS, sulfates, parabens, phthalates, fragrances, dyes, sodium chloride, formaldehyde, MEA, DEA, TEA, or most common allergens.

JakeNavyRed

Close-toed shoes: While less of an infant consideration, mama Emalee G. reminded us that “The kids need to have close-toed shoes and sandals, as well as sandals with backs on them!” With all the toddling and running around at daycare, often the daycares recommend close-toed shoes and sandals, and almost certainly no flip-flops! Lori M. added, “No slip-on shoes. The shoes must have laces or Velcro; slip-ons fall off too easily.” Looking for the perfect baby and toddler shoe for daycare? We recommend pediped shoes, which have a ton of styles to chose from, all with closed toes, safe straps, and are approved by the American Podiatric Medical Association for promoting healthy foot development.

Bambo7

Diapers: While cloth diapering is becoming very popular for many parents, many daycares don’t allow for cloth diapers. Here’s a hint: remind them about a reduction in trash with cloth and that could make them reconsider. If you’re unable to talk the facility into cloth diapering and looking for an eco-friendly, allergen-free, safe alternative to cloth diapers, we love Bambo Nature diapers. Made to fit your baby’s growing body, these diapers are free from chlorine, perfumes, optical brighteners and lotions, as well as phthalates, latex, and gluten. Bambo Nature diapers feature a breathable back-sheet, which ensures that the skin can breathe, keeping the skin drier and less prone to rash or infection. Bambo Nature also features hypoallergenic baby wipes and training pants for older toddlers.

inchbug-orbit-labels

Labels: How are you going to label all of these items for your baby? We are huge fans of Inchbug labels – which happened to be one of the most common brands named as a “must-have” by daycare moms! Their 3D custom Orbit labels are engraved with your baby’s name on them (in braille too!) and can fit on any sippy-cup, bottle, or cup – they are colorful and will ensure that your baby is drinking from the right container. Inchbug also sells adhesive labels, clothing labels, allergy labels and alerts, and even labels which can go in shoes! Put your baby’s name on everything with Inchbug labels.

Some final tips…

Besides the actual items which your baby will need, finding a daycare which fits all of your family’s needs can sometimes be overwhelming. We asked Lindsay Bliss, the owner of Kidspiration for some questions parents can ask when they tour a daycare. Her top five questions she said parents should ask as they tour a daycare, 1. What are the ratios of children to teachers? 2. What’s your sick policy? 3. What are the fees? Late fees? Early hour fees? 4. How can I communicate with you? 5. What materials do I need to bring and what do you provide?

Although the transition can be hard, here are some testimonials from other mamas: Vicki M. said, “My daughter is in kindergarten this year and I truly believe the curriculum she learned in daycare over the past three years has made her so bright and ready to be in the school setting! She knows how to sit, listen, pay attention, take turns, share. All things she learned by going to daycare!” As Trish N. exclaimed, “I am a full time working mom and both my kids have been in full time day care since three months old. It has been a great experience for me. They’re both very smart, they can sit still, listen to directions, use good manners. They are outgoing and are kind to other children.” Even though it’s a tough change for some parents, daycare can a wonderful place your baby can thrive, make friends, and learn social skills – as long as you’re prepared with all the necessary items, the transition can be smoother for both mama and baby!

Mompreneur Spotlight: Ericka N. Perry, Founder of The Stork Bag

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

For this week’s mompreneur spotlight, we sit down with Ericka N. Perry, CEO/Founder of The Stork Bag – the first ever reusable pregnancy subscription bag, curated with 8-12 products to meet your trimester and postpartum needs.

24

GG: How did you decide to launch your business? Tell us a little more about The Stork Bag.
EP: I launched The Stork Bag in 2014 after my best friend found out she was pregnant for the first time. I remember searching for the perfect care package to send her but coming up short. During that time I discovered there was no product out there that matched my needs so after about 4 weeks of planning, The Stork Bag was born and it has been history ever since. Having the opportunity to do what I absolutely love and serve a population that I am passionate about has been the most amazing part of my journey thus far.

1U1A3495

GG: How do you balance work and family?
I have a schedule for everything! My kids know when its snack time, bedtime, quiet/reading time, etc. I use schedules to maintain sanity but more than that, I am a person who works well with deadlines. Scheduling helps me keep everything in focus and prioritize to get things done efficiently and effectively. I also am not afraid to seek help when things start getting too busy, which is why I rely on my team to help me maintain a comfortable balance and prevent me from work-overload.

5Q3A4640 (1)

GG: What’s the best part of being a mompreneur?
The flexibility to have time to spend with my family. Although, I work harder now as a mompreneur than I ever did working outside the home, the best part is being able to somewhat dictate my own schedule. I also have a passion for motherhood and take pride in being able to help promote other women-owned brands. Being a mompreneur gives me the platform to help promote, encourage and inspire and that is what I intend to do before it’s all said and done.

DIY Baby Hats

by Gugu Guru 8 Comments

See Kate Sew partners with Gugu Guru once again to share a fantastic DIY tutorial.  This time? A DIY baby hat and personalized fabric! Read on to get the details…

knotted-baby-hat-tutorial-2

I’ve never been a huge fan of the hospital hats so these are a cuter way to keep baby’s head warm! There’s a cute little knot at the top and it’s stretchy and cute!  And if you make it personalized, they are also a unique and adorable way to announce your baby’s name!

We have been using the DockATot every night since we’ve been home from the hospital! Baby Mae sleeps in it and she always falls asleep really well. We swaddle her and stick her in the DockATot inside her crib. The firm cushions all around the DockATot keep her nice and cozy. I think it helps her to feel secure as she sleeps and I’m not complaining about 5-6 hour stretches of sleep!

She’s been such a great sleeper so far, I’m giving some of the credit to this thing! I also love how cute they look in it! One of the best parts about the DockATot is the removable, washable cover! There are a bunch of color options and you can buy extra covers separately! I definitely recommend getting a second cover, we had a spit up episode the first or second night and a pee episode on another day. It’s nice to not have the pressure of keeping it nice when you can just throw it in the wash!

knotted-baby-hat-tutorial

And this baby lounger is the only place baby Mae can get a decent nap! It’s really hard for her to nap with two other crazy wild kids around. We use the DockATot also as a way to keep the baby safe on the bed or floor when other kids are around. It’s lightweight enough to tote around the house and is probably perfect for traveling, though we haven’t traveled with the new baby yet!

These knotted baby hats are SUPER easy and fast to make! It’s a great first sewing project if you’ve never sewn and I always love a good quick sewing project that you can finish while baby is napping (maybe in her DockATot, ha!).

knotted-baby-hat-tutorial-3

First I’ll show you how to make the hat, then I’ll show you how to personalize solid fabric!

Materials:
-1/4 yard knit fabric
–knot hat pattern download (this will fit about newborn to 2/3 months!)
–stretch needle

Instructions:

Print the pattern at 100% (do not scale) and trim off the edges. Tape the pattern piece together and cut out the hat pattern.

hat-layour

Pin the pattern to 2 layers of fabric and cut out 2 pieces.

tutorial-5

Pin the pieces together with right sides together.

tutorial-6

Sew around the hat with a 3/8″ seam allowance

tutorial-7

Turn the hat right side out.

tutorial-8

Finish the bottom edge of the hat with a zig zag stitch or a serger. Press under 1/2″ at the bottom of the hat. Sew to finish hem.

tutorial-9

Tie a knot in the top of that, leaving about an inch or so at the top.

tutorial-10

All done!

Personalize it! To make a name hat we’ll start with the fabric before you turn it into a hat. You can either use a square of fabric 12″ by 12″ or cut the pattern pieces out and just put names on the fabric you need.

Materials:
-baby hat fabric

Create a vinyl stencil with your cutting machine. You’ll need 2 if you’re using a standard 12″ by 12″ mat. Use transfer tape to transfer it from the vinyl’s backing to the fabric. Stick it on, making sure to press well around letter edges.

Happy mom, happy baby! With a new baby at home, it’s easy to forget that mom needs care too. Gugu Guru has rounded up a few items to help make it a bit easier.

Nesting Days Carrier: Skin-to-skin is a lot more than just having all that newborn deliciousness as close as possible. There are proven emotional and biological benefits for both baby and mom, and who doesn’t want a happier, healthier, less stressed baby? The Nesting Days Carrier makes hands-free skin-to-skin babywearing easy! Created by a postpartum doula and made locally in San Francisco, there are no straps, buckles, harnesses or wrapping techniques involved – and it even provides gentle abdominal support. So strip baby down to a diaper (when at home), slip her into your Nesting Days carrier, and breathe in all that yummy new baby smell!

Fannypants Freedom Plus Set + Maxi SmartPad Underwear: Did baby spend the last few months kickboxing your bladder and now that you’ve given birth, things aren’t quite how they used to be? Don’t worry, Fannypants has you covered! These moisture-wicking, flexible, stretchable panties come with a Maxi SmartPad (a washable, reusable pad that can be used for your period or bladder leaks). Go ahead and laugh and lift, you’ve got eco-friendly protection on your side!

yootoo Bra: As moms, we’re constantly making sure that our baby is as comfy as possible, but you need comfort too! (Hence the name of this awesome bra line.) yootoo nursing bras provide breathable support, clasps that open and close easily with one hand, a plunging neckline for versatility, and patented UGrow technology, which allows the bra to conform to your body. Plus, a portion of every yootoo sale goes to Every Mother Count, a non-profit founded by Christy Turlington Burns that supports maternal health programs around the world!
