5 Big Baby Registry Mistakes to Avoid

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Bet you didn’t know that it’s really normal to make some big baby registry mistakes or stumble into some common shopping pitfalls if you’re a first time parent.  No worries, Gugu Guru’s here to help you steer clear of some common missteps that you can make when building your registry. Since launching Gugu Guru in 2015, we have been fortunate enough to help thousands of families with registering. By learning about big baby registry mistakes to avoid, you can reduce the likelihood of cluttering your home, dissatisfaction with products, and returns or exchanges. So here they are…

Mistake #1: Registering for Way Too Much

One of the most common big baby registry mistakes is putting everything under the sun on your registry. It’s easy to get overwhelmed – especially when you’re selecting products for baby as a first time parent. You’d be surprised by how little baby actually needs and aside from savings and an uncluttered home, another benefit to registering for just the essentials is that you’re reducing your footprint as a consumer.  One easy thing to avoid is buying way too much in one size – especially newborn size.  Babies grow and they grow quickly. If you purchase tons of newborn size clothes and launder them, you’ll inevitably be stuck with a bunch of unworn clothes in a short amount of time. Same goes with newborn size diapers – definitely register for one jumbo box but register for a box of size 1 as well. If your baby is still in size NB diapers when you’ve gone through that initial box, then you can always buy more. Check out our minimalist registry picks for more tips on building a baby registry of just the bare essentials.

Mistake #2: Thinking It will Cost a Fortune

Luckily for brands like Infantino or Target’s Cat and Jack (check out the new baby subscription box), you definitely do not have to either sacrifice quality nor break the bank when it comes to registering for baby. We are also living the age of local BTS (Buy Trade Sell) groups on sites like Facebook or awesome consignment sites like ThredUp. But buyer beware: while clothing is generally safe to get as hand-me-downs (though make sure to check for loose buttons or other infant hazards), there are certainly some items that you may want to avoid getting second hand such as car seats (they expire!), strollers or cribs. Check out our budget registry picks for more tips on how to build an economical baby registry.

Mistake #3: Underestimating the Value of a Few Investment Pieces

On the flip side, if you are too penny-wise when building your baby registry, it can come back to haunt you. There is nothing more frustrating or more money-wasting than crappy baby gear.  If you register for an umbrella stroller that’s priced at just a few dollars – expect to be replacing it probably more than once and also expect to be frustrated when you can’t open it, or when the wheels won’t turn or when a wheel pops off. Trust us when we say that sometimes a cheap price tag isn’t worth the agony nor is it worth a potential safety hazard for baby.  Another thing to keep in mind is if you’re planning to have more children close together in age. It may be worth to register for a stroller that will convert to a double now versus having to pay for a double stroller later on. There are other investment items we recommend like a mattress, bouncer and other items that will get lots of use.

Mistake #4: Registering for Too Many Bottles, Pacifiers or Diapers

Newsflash! You will find out that your baby has preferences and that you also have preferences when it comes to products. One big baby registry mistake that you’ll want to avoid is just assuming that your baby will like a product just because it’s popular with mommy Instagrammers or because your best friend’s baby likes it. Sometimes baby will not accept a pacifier – no matter how cute it is or how many brands you try. Other times, you may have to try a few different bottles because baby has a nipple preference or maybe the one you read so many great reviews about doesn’t fit in that formula maker you purchased, has too many parts or it leaks (the worst!) Preferences come into play with diapers too – particular brands can be popular but the fit is just not right for your baby. It may take a few trials of brands and sizes before you find the right diaper for your baby. Play it safe and register for some retailer gift cards just in case you have to do some shopping around with these particular items. If you get it right on the first time with the pacifier / bottle / diaper brand you choose, then the gift cards can go to other necessities as baby grows – of which there will be plenty!

Mistake #5: Asking a Friend or Family Member What to Register For

This is the queen mother of all big baby registry mistakes – asking your friend or family member what to register for. We say this all the time at Gugu Guru: the products that work for  – even those products considered as “can’t live without” by – your bff or your sister may not be the right products for YOU.  As much as you have in common with your besties, your respective home décor and wardrobes probably look a lot different and that will be the same for the products you choose for parenting.  Even more so, a year in the baby gear market is like dog years. New products and up-and-coming brands are a constant, and if you’re not staying on top of things and only going for what your friend used for her baby she delivered 6 months ago, you may just miss the perfect products for you.  This is why we came up with Gugu Guru, which delivers free, personalized recommendations and then ultimately Gugu Concierge – our “white glove” service that gives you the MOST personalized help preparing for baby. Gugu Concierge helps you with baby registry and beyond so you can avoid all these mistakes, cut through the noise and get things right on your very first try. P.S. Product Discovery: The Starling

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

When you hold a new baby in your arms, sometimes it feels as though you’re chatting away and they aren’t understanding you…after a while, you start to wonder, “does my chatting help?” We are here to tell you, yes it does! How do we know? We are excited to introduce you to The Starling, a wearable word counter, that helps parents set goals and stay on track to make sure their children are hearing enough words each day.

Inspired by over 30 years of university research, The Starling was inspired by three decades of research showing the importance of verbal engagement on a child’s language development. Though it may not seem like it makes a big difference, all of the chit-chat you make with your baby helps their long term language development. But, how do you know you’re saying enough words? That’s where the Starling comes into play. The Starling, which is made from medical grade plastic (BPA free), clips on to baby and tracks (not records) how many words you’re speaking around baby a day. It determines what is speech, and what is not speech and filters for speech within 4-6 feet from baby. It can filter out background noises and you can even calibrate it to accommodate loud talkers and whisperers.

So, how does The Starling work? Check out this handy link for all the scientific info.  The Starling is water and drool proof, and has a four day battery life, so you don’t need to charge it every night. It also hooks up to an SmartPhone app so you can track your progress. It can understand a variety of languages, and even has age specific activities to follow along with as well! For more info and to purchase, check out The Starling here.

Making Mama’s Life Easier With BabyBjorn’s Bouncer Bliss

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

We are so excited to announce that BabyBjorn, the Swedish family-owned company, has launched a new version of the beloved classic bouncer design from 1961 with a new look and style – Bouncer Bliss. Created as a tribute to the 1961 version, BabyBjorn realized how immensely popular and essential their bouncer was to families everywhere and wanted to update the style and design of the ever-popular baby bouncer.

As a new parent, we wish we could sit and stare at our sweet little baby all day, but there are bills to pay, dishes to do, and food to cook! The Bouncer Bliss makes a wonderfully safe and supportive space for baby to relax while in the same room as the rest of the family. It’s lightweight, so you can carry it from room-to-room, too.

Bouncer Bliss is available in three new looks – a luxurious, quilted cotton in several lavish colors, a soft, cozy 3D jersey, and a lightweight, comfortable mesh in lots of fresh, modern colors. The gentle rocking creates a sense of bliss and tranquility, not just at the beginning of a baby’s life, but later on as well. By having a safe space for baby to recline on the floor, it promotes interaction with other family members, especially siblings. Baby can sit face-to-face with their siblings for baby games and playtime.

The soft and natural rocking, completely powered by the baby, requires no batteries or cords. This encourages babies’ interaction with their sense of balance and motor skills, by rocking in response to their own movements. Because it doesn’t need to be plugged in, you can bring the bouncer all over the house easily, while traveling, or even just in the front yard for some sunshine. The BabyBjorn Bouncer Bliss makes a wonderful baby shower gift and is an essential item for every baby registry too.

Adoption Month With Live Sweet Photography

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Today we have a wonderful guest post by one of our favorite mamas, Lindsey Bonnice of Live Sweet Photography. She’s here to talk all about the adoption journey of her two youngest children. Don’t forget to check out her baby registry essentials for an adoptive mama, too!

livesweet1

Hi I’m Lindsey from Live Sweet Photography and I am so excited to be here today sharing with you a little about our adoption journey! Adoption has always been a dream of mine. My husband and I talked about it before we were even married and although I didn’t know when we would add to our family through adoption I knew for sure that I wanted to grow our family someday through it. We had our son Noah biologically in 2008 and when he was about three years old we decided that it was time to add another baby to our family. We started discussing adoption and few months later decided that we were ready to start the process. We used an agency in Florida for both of our adoptions because Florida is a safe state and is a wonderful state to work with when adopting. We started our process in July of 2012, it took us several months to complete paperwork and get our home study done. We were officially on the adopting family waiting list with our agency in October of 2012 and shortly after we were matched with Miss Libby’s birth mother. The waiting stage was the hardest but so worth the wait. Miss Libby arrived in February of 2013, we lived in Florida for about three weeks during our adoption and then brought her home! Libby’s adoption was very fast and such a huge blessing to us.

livesweet2

In the beginning of 2015 we decided we were ready to start the process to add another precious babe to our family. We went through similar steps as we did with Libby but this time we had several maybe matches that did not end up going through. Those times were very hard and got me questioning so many things but I just kept reminding myself that our baby the one who was meant for our family was out there and in perfect time we would be united! That could not have been more true and in March of 2016 our sweet Finn was born! He is the perfect addition to our family and we are all more than smitten with him! Adoption is a huge step, it’s big and scary and a lot of work, but there is also not much else as rewarding as adoption is. Our family has been blessed so much for adoption and we could not be more thankful!

livesweet3

Since I had such passion and love for adoption I decided I wanted to do something to help spread that love! In 2014 after adopting Libby I started Live Sweet Shop to create jobs for local women and support and share our love for adoption. We created plush animals first and called them Sweeties after what we called Libby “our little sweetheart” while we were waiting for her. All of our pieces are handmade with love in the USA by local seamstresses. All of our dolls and Sweeties come with adoption certificates and we donate funds to adopting families each month. We are also starting a new program to help donate even more funds to adopting families, we will be offering adopting families spots to host adoption fundraising parties in our online store each month. We are so excited about this program because now everyone who is looking to raise funds for their adoption will have the opportunity to! Be sure to follow along on our Live Sweet Photography Instagram and Live Sweet Shop Instagram!

In honor of National Adoption Month, Live Sweet Shop has created this adorable print – it’s yours for free, just head over to Live Sweet Photography, subscribe to their newsletter and this print will be emailed right away to you! Print

Back to Sleep Day 11: 4moms Breeze

by Gugu Guru 9 Comments

This is hands-down, one of the coolest play yards out there. Any seasoned parent will tell you that play yards can be so dang confusing.  Some have this whole step-by-step process of popping up the sides and then pushing some button in the middle while the sides that you thought were popped in wind up collapsing on you… (Wait, yeah, that’s not the way it’s supposed to go but that’s been our experience and the experience of many others.) And that is why the team at Gugu Guru just loves the sleep-certified 4moms Breeze. Learn more about whether this product is a fit for your lifestyle and/or baby registry then enter to win one below.

GG_BacktoSleep_2016-36

Traveler

Aside from its general ease of use and the fact that it comes with a convenient travel bag, the 4moms Breeze is so sturdy and well made that it is sure to withstand the beating that traveling baby gear typically takes. From being stacked on to thrown on a conveyor belt, rest assured that the Breeze can take it and will still provide a comfy, familiar place for baby once you arrive at your destination.  The fact that both the play yard and bassinet attachment wipe clean with a damp cloth is also a bonus when you’re on the road frequently.

gadget

4moms is really THE gear brand for tech loving parents. The company actually doesn’t call itself a “baby gear company” but rather a “consumer technology company that leverages robotics, technology and innovative design to disrupt and redefine.”  With its one touch open and close feature, the Breeze doesn’t disappoint in terms of disrupting the category.

nofuss

4moms calls its Breeze “seriously easy” and we agree, hence our No Fuss badge here.  To open the Breeze, you just give one push.  To close the Breeze, you just pull a single time.  Anyone who has ever battled with a clunky play yard of the past will more than appreciate the ease of use that the Breeze has to offer.  Furthermore, there’s something to be said about “so easy to use that a grandparent can figure it out” and that definitely applies here.

DIY Burp Cloth Tutorial

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Let’s get crafty! See Kate Sew partners with Gugu Guru once again to share a fantastic DIY tutorial.  We’re all about nursing in this post co-sponsored by Momsense.

I’m so excited to be here sharing a burp cloth tutorial today! I’ve never really needed burp cloths before, my baby #3 is a little bit of a spitter!

momsense-10

We partnered with Momsense for this tutorial for Breastfeeding Awareness Month! The Momsense Smart Breastfeeding Meter is a new product that tracks how much your baby is eating! The meter has a pair of headphones equipped with a microphone that safely sticks to baby’s neck. The microphone amplifies her sucks and swallows for you to hear. It also has a little animation that goes with it and it translates the swallows to give you a good sense of how much milk your baby is getting!

burpcloth-1

My older daughter loves to listen in and it’s so fun to involve the kids and dad in the breastfeeding experience. I needed this meter about 6 years ago with my first when I was struggling with milk supply, so I’m so glad it’s on the market now!

momsense-4

My favorite part about the meter is how inspiring it is to a breastfeeding mama! It’s so neat to see and hear how effective your breastfeeding session is and is pushing us to get the best and longest breastfeeding experience possible. Read my full review on SeeKateSew.com to hear all about my struggle with supply and how the Momsense Smart Breastfeeding Meter has been a game changer for us!

momsense-9

Today we’re making burp cloths lined with absorbent towel material! I thought lemon fabric would be cute since we’re talking about eating! The back of the cloths are made from a towel. You can either use a pre-made towel or terry cloth material for the backing. The only other thing you need is the pattern (provided below) and basic sewing supplies.

burp-cloth-4

Let’s get started!

Materials:
–See Kate Sew Burp Cloth Pattern
-a store-bought towel or terry cloth material
-1/4 yard cotton ( lemon fabric source)

Print out the burp cloth pattern at 100% (do not scale). Cut off the overlap and tape the 3 pages together. It will look like this:

layout

tutorial

  1. Use the pattern piece to cut out 1 piece from cotton and 1 piece from your towel material.
  2. Put the cotton piece on top of the towel piece with the right sides together.
  3. Pin and sew the front and back together 3/8″ from the edges, leaving a 2-3″ opening on one side.
  4. Turn the burp cloth right side out through the opening you left. Press. Turn the opening edges in.
  5. Topstitch around the cloth 1/4″ from the edge. The opening will be closed as you do this.

You’re done! A little stack of these make a really cute shower gift (maybe paired with a Momsense meter!).
