What’s New on Gugu: April 10, 2019

by Abby Ludwig Leave a Comment

I absolutely love finding new products to share with our users. It is too easy to feel “overwhelmed” with all of the new products that hit the market each day. Having just celebrated Gugu Guru’s 4th birthday, our initial little ones aren’t even babies anymore! As your babies grow into toddlers and beyond, don’t hesitate to reach out to us for product help! We LOVE hearing from our users!

For loads of our other ever-changing favorites, please check out our Explore page!

Noggin Wipes: A truly no-mess solution to cradle cap, which affects over 70% of babies before their first birthday. These gently exfoliating wipes are created with an avocado-oil based solution, which continues to moisturize and break up cradle cap well after use. The disposable wipes will begin to work immediately, helping clear away the flaky (and unwanted) irritation.

Target’s Pillowfort Inclusive Line: Pillowfort, Target’s adorable line for kids’ décor, has revolutionized the market for children with sensory sensitivities. They have launched 20 new items, including weighted blankets, floor cushions, and a cocoon seat. Each high-quality product adds something special to this inclusive line. We cannot stop praising this line and Target’s approach to making everyone feel welcome!

Motif Medical’s Luna Breast Pump: Coming this month, The Luna Breast Pump is a great choice for working moms. It is sleek and small on the outside, but strong enough on the inside to help busy moms pump in less time. Plus it’s a ‘closed system,’ which means that your breastmilk will flow directly into the bottle and helps prevent contamination. Check their website for insurance coverage!

Mimish Storage Pouf: I am a sucker for multi-purpose items. Mimish has taken adorable décor and added even more functionality. Ever walk into your little one’s room only to find stuffed animals and toys everywhere? Look no further than this fun line of storage poufs! They will cleverly hide any mess while providing adorable aesthetic to every bedroom.

Edushape Baby Sensory Balls: Edushape’s sensory balls have been around since the late 90’s. There’s a reason why these continue to be a family favorite! We love this new set, which allow baby to explore various textures and colors with easy to grab materials.

What’s New on Gugu: March 27, 2019

by Abby Ludwig Leave a Comment

I have some great new products to share this week! At Gugu Guru, we are always looking for the latest new baby/parent items to help make your lives easier. This week I am focusing on some new items that will be highlighted at the upcoming JPMA show. JPMA, or Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association, is the industry’s authority on baby product quality and safety. Plus, our very own Monica Banks, Gugu Guru’s Founder/CEO will be presenting at this year’s JPMA Trade Show!

For loads of our other favorites, please check out our Explore page! (Also, these opinions are 100% my own and I have not received any products in exchange for placement in What’s New on Gugu!)

Slumberpod: Imagine this – you are traveling with your infant or toddler and sharing a room for sleep (i.e. hotel room, grandparent’s house, etc.). When your baby first wakes up, they look across the room and can see you instantly. Instead of the full night of sleep you are all used to, your little one is up and ready to start the day. Slumberpod was created for this exact situation. A perfect solution to create a privacy pod over travel cribs or playards. This is a must-have for traveling families!

Dr. Brown’s Options+ Anti-Colic Bottle: One of our favorite bottle brands has done it again! The new Options+ Bottle utilizes a special venting system that you can use to help with symptoms of Colic and Reflux. As your baby grows, and no longer needs the extra vent, you have the ‘option’ to remove it. They have made a few other great upgrades to the new bottles, too! We love the one-handed cap removal and new nipple design. These are truly a go-to bottle for any babies with tummy issues!

NOONI’s: NOONI’s is the first all-in-one leak resistant nursing sleep bra. With a patent-pending 4 layer solution, you will no longer wake up to find yourself in a cold and damp top (or worse, bedsheet). Plus, their inside layer is made of a thin fleece material, staying warm and soft on the skin. An extremely comfortable solution to such a frustrating problem!

Cybex Stroller Upgrades: We love Cybex strollers at Gugu Guru! The Priam (class all-terrain) and Mios (travel), have recently received excellent upgrades. They have upgraded colors, stroller suspension, and the Lux Carrycot. These strollers are excellent options for moms looking for a sleek, modern stroller that functions well for everyday use.

Chicco Nextfit Zip Max Air: Chicco’s Nextfit convertible car seat has received quite the upgrade. Now with multiple recline positions, this seat fits infants starting at 4 pounds (rear facing) and converts to a forward facing seat for children up to 65 lbs. It is easy to install and has added safety features. We also love the ability to unzip the fabric, making cleaning a breeze!

Comfort Quest with Shenae Grimes-Beech Part 1: Nursing Bra

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

One of the most commonly asked questions in our Gugu Village is, “What is the most comfortable nursing bra?” We decided to team up with our girl, celeb new mama Shenae Grimes-Beech, to test out some of the leading bras and try to get to an answer. Here Shenae shares with us her pros and cons for each of the bras she tried.

Cosabella Womens’ “Never Say Never” Mommie Soft Bra

Pro: So far these are my favorite nursing bras for feeling like yourself because they are sexy and lacy but still serve their purpose.

Con: This is hardly a con but you will likely have to remove the tags because I found them to be scratchy.

H&M MAMA Nursing Bras

Pro: The H&M lace trimmed bras were my Cosabella bras before I had my Cosabella bras. They come in multi packs so they’re very affordable and they’re cute. The v neck sleep nursing bras were the first ones I bought and I still love them. Again, you can buy multipacks that are affordable and the stretchy fit feels almost like workout wear so everything is held in place really nicely. They’re comfy enough to sleep in because they don’t have a back clasp and the v neck cut makes feeding super easy with no nursing clasps to deal with!

Con: They’re quite size-specific so as your boobs fluctuate throughout the day with milk production, they may feel too small to contain yourself and because they’re quite limited in material, they don’t fit breast pads as well as the Cosabella bras.

Kindred Bravely French Terry Racerback Nursing Sleep Bra for Maternity/Breastfeeding

Pro: The bra with slight padding and a clasp is VERY comfy. I also love their racerback, v neck sleeping bra because it is so comfortable. It is probably the most comfortable nursing bra I have so it’s perfect for sleeping and the v neck is my preferred way to nurse anyway. (I very rarely use the nursing clasps on any of my bras because it’s just easier and quicker to slide it to the side and get feeding than fumbling with the clasps.)

Con: I found the Kindred Bravely bra to be a bit oversized for me in terms of fit. It also has slight padding, which I find can create an awkward shape of my boobs. (My nursing boobs are better than ever so I don’t feel like any padding is necessary anyway – lol!)

BRAVADO! DESIGNS Women’s Body Silk Seamless Nursing Bra and Maternity Bra

Pro: The BRAVADO! DESIGNS line is extremely comfortable and very cute.

Con: Similar to the Kindred Bravely bra, I find the cut and slight padding to create an awkward shape.

Belabumbum Lotus Nursing Bra

Pro: This one is cute AND, more importantly, comfortable.

Con: It’s not my favorite to sleep in because of the clasp at the back.

Disposable Nursing Pads Challenge

by Gugu Guru 1 Comment

This is Part Two of our two-part Nursing Pad Challenge series. In this challenge, Gugu Guru mama Denalee tried out four different disposable nursing pad brands and discusses the pros and cons of each, as well as choosing her Gugu Pick for all-around best disposable nursing pads. In the first part of this series, we look at reusable pads.

Nursing Pad Challenge Round 2: Disposable Pads

Personally, I like the way the disposables feel more than reusables and I like how disposable pads tend to stay put more than reusables on the days I’m nursing versus pumping.  For this best disposable nursing pad challenge, I compared four different brands: Hey Mama, Bundlebliss, Medela and Lansinoh. I evaluated each one for factors like absorbency, comfort, thinness, appearance and comfort.

1. Hey Mama Disposable Nursing Pads

Pros: These are soft and absorbent. They are stay put and are not noticeable through shirts.

Cons: They are on the thicker side of the disposable pads that I tried and they get really heavy when full.

best disposable nursing pads bundlebliss

2. Bundlebliss Disposable Ultra Thin Nursing Breast Pads

Pros: These are super thin and the packaging is really cute.

Cons: As much as I wanted to love these, because they are so thin I find that they fill quickly when I wore them and they also do not stay put in my bra. They fold and move around if I am moving a lot.

best disposable nursing pads medela

3. Medela Nursing Pads

Pros: These work, they’re absorbent and stay put.

Cons: They are not as soft as the other disposable pads I tried and they feel thicker. They’re a slightly different shape, which might affect how they wear. I feel like I had to keep wearing them to give them a shot but never found myself reaching for these as my go-to pads.

best disposable nursing pads lansinoh

4. Lansinoh Ultimate Protection Disposable Breast Pads

Pros: These are amazing! They are super soft, thin, stay in place and are absorbent.

Cons: They are not as natural as the reusable ones – I’m not sure what the “blue core” does – but whatever it is, they work!

Gugu Pick: Overall my favorite disposable pads are definitely the Lansinoh Ultimate Protection Disposable Breast Pads.

Reusable Nursing Pad Challenge

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

This is Part One of our two-part Nursing Pad Challenge series. In this challenge, Gugu Guru mama Denalee tried out seven different reusable nursing pad brands and discusses the pros and cons of each, as well as choosing her Gugu Pick for all-around best reusable nursing pads. In the second part of this series, we’ll be looking at disposable pads.

Nursing Pad Challenge Round 1: Reusable Pads

On days I’m pumping I find the reusable pads more convenient than the disposable pads and since I dual pump I leak less. For this reusable pad challenge, I compared several different brands: Curve, BRAVADO!, bamboobies, Jalousie, Kindred Bravely, Momcabi and Baby Voice. I evaluated each one for factors like absorbency, comfort, thinness, appearance and comfort.

reusable nursing Curve

1. Curve Reusable Nursing Pads by Cache Coeur

Pros: I love the shape of these pads and that they have a little structure to them. They stay put, which is really nice and they also give you a smooth line. I also leaked a lot while testing these pads and they did not soak through!

Cons: Depending on the bra and how full of milk I am, the Curve pads can take up too much space because of their structure; it is almost a push up effect, which doesn’t always work well. They also can feel very damp against the skin when they get wet, which was uncomfortable when I could not change the pad right away. They also did not wash well in the machine (one wash in the machine and they looked worn) so it would be best to hand wash them. I don’t have time to hand wash so I continue to put them in the machine and they are still doing just fine after about four washes. So they do hold up, the color just fades a little.

reusable nursing Bravado

2. BRAVADO! DESIGNS Women’s Washable and Reusable Nursing Breast Pads (3-Pack)

Pros: I liked the packaging and feminine fabric; it is just a cute design. They’re also lightweight, which is nice and I didn’t have any issues leaking through the pads. The mesh is also nice and soft against the skin.

Cons: The size was large for me so I found they didn’t lay flat. They started to wrinkle once they got damp. The mesh also felt damp when I leaked.

reusable nursing Bamboobies

3. bamboobies Washable Reusable Nursing Pads with Leak-Proof Backing, Ultra Thin, 4 Count
Pros: These are really soft and comfortable. I was skeptical of the unique heart shape but they actually did not show through my shirt and I think the shape would work well for most sizes.

Cons: I leaked through the pad. These were meant for light leaks but I did not think I leaked that much and when I removed the pad it was completely soaked through. Luckily, it did not leak through my bra but it was still less than ideal. These also did not wash as well as I would have hoped. When they came out of the wash they started to twist up around the edges but you couldn’t tell when I was wearing them.

reusable nursing Jalousie

4. Jalousie Reusable Bamboo Fiber Nursing Pads

Pros: They do not leak and the bamboo wicks the moisture, which is nice.

Cons: They were a little large for me so I didn’t feel like they laid flat and the fabric was a bit tough. It did not irritate me but I could see it being irritating for someone who is just starting to nurse.

reusable nursing Kindre Bravely

5. Kindred Bravely Washable Organic Nursing Pads (8 Pack)

Pros: I loved the size of these pads and that they have a little seam in them so they laid nicely against the skin. You could not tell I was wearing them. Although they were the same size as the Baby Voice pads, the seam make a big difference. They are also absorbent, I had no issues with leaking. They also washed well.

Cons: Again, the fabric is not as soft as I would have liked but it was not irritating to me.

reusable nursing Momcabi

6. Momcabi

Pros: These are absorbent and I did not feel damp wearing them when I leaked. They also wash well.

Cons: They were on the larger size for me and bunched a little but I don’t think it was that noticeable through my shirt.

reusable nursing Baby Voice

7. Baby Voice

Pros: These are a great size pad for me (they are a little smaller than the Momcabi and BRAVADO! pads.) They also work well, are absorbent, and do not feel damp against my skin.

Cons: They bunched up and would move around in my bra. The fabric is also a bit rough against the skin. After washing them a few times they started to feel a little softer but are not as luxurious-feeling as some of the other pads (such as bamboobies).

reusable nursing Curve is Gugu Pick

Gugu Pick: For reusable pads I really liked the Curve pads. I found them really comfortable and I liked the shape of them.

My second favorite are the Kindred Bravely pads. I liked how they wicked the moisture and they personally laid nicely against me (I did find, however, that all of the bamboo pads ultimately felt very similar to each other: Baby Voice, Momcabi, Kindred Bravely, and Jalousie. I could see others preferring other bamboo ones since I think the sizing is personal.)

Totum Treats: It’s a well known fact that breastfeeding can make a mama hungry! We love these treats by Totum, which are not only a delicious snack for a breastfeeding mom, but provide breastfeeding supportive nutrients. These cookies were created while the founder was nursing, and she let her instinctive cravings guide the ingredients as much as her own research. In general, Totum’s cookies focus on healthy fats like flax seed, nuts (pistachio and pine nuts), almond butter, dark chocolate and organic, non-GMO butter. These fats help satisfy new moms while having the added benefit of aiding absorption of nutrients she needs to sustain energy and postpartum healing. Totum Treats are a mother’s support cookie — not only do they really work to boost and improve the quality of mother’s milk; but they also taste decadently delicious, permitting mom to take a much-needed mindful moment to herself.  As their website says (we love this): “Not only do so many women judge themselves harshly around breastfeeding, but the achiever in all of us sees the metrics around our baby’s weight gain and the ounces we pump as a sign of success or failure. Screw that! We deserve a treat, and these feel good, taste incredible and really do help your milk supply increase.”

Crane Travel Humidifier: Did you know that a humidifier running in your baby’s sleep quarters will help your baby breathe, sleep and NURSE more easily? Moist air is easier to breathe. Humidity also makes it easier to get the mucus out of your baby’s nose and a clear nose can help a congested baby nurse more easily. For the frequent traveler, an IHA Innovation Award Winner, the Crane Travel Humidifier (seen above) is both quiet and effective. The extra humidity helps babies to breathe easier, meaning they can sleep better and eat with less frustration helping them to be better equipped to fight off a cold.

Thank you to Earth Mama, Baby Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit, Curve, Totum and Lil Mixins for making this sponsored post possible!

Breastfeeding Pain + Sore Nipples SOS

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Hey everyone – it’s Monica here – the founder of Gugu Guru.  I wanted to share a personal story today about my experience breastfeeding my first.  I am the youngest of seven kids and the last of my siblings to have babies. My mom was a breastfeeding superhero and so were my sisters. When it was my time to nurse, it never once crossed my mind that it would be difficult for me. After all, I came from a family of breastfeeders. I was cut out for it, right? So, while I researched the heck out of things like how to get my newborn to sleep before I had my son, I never once read a word on breastfeeding so felt a little overwhelmed when things didn’t go my way. Turns out, breastfeeding can throw you a curveball or two like breastfeeding pain and sore nipples.

Since it’s World Breastfeeding Week, I wanted to share some of the products that we recommend for breastfeeding pain relief.  Of course, you should always consult with your physician or lactation consultant before you try anything but you might want to consider these products if you’re experiencing discomfort while nursing.  I personally find these products to be essential in helping nipple pain, breastmilk let-down and providing general comfort. Read on to find out what product(s) might give relief to you.

Soothing Nipple Creams to Check Out

Breastfeeding Pain nipple butter

Earth Mama Organic Nipple Butter – You may love Earth Mama Organic Nipple Butter if natural, organic GMO-free certified products are important to you. It moisturizes dry skin, and brings your nipples back to their happy place. And since it just might end up in baby’s mouth, it’s Non-GMO Project Verified. So there’s no need to wash it off before nursing! You would also want to consider using a lanolin free product if there is any indication that you may have thrush as lanolin may exacerbate fungal growth.

Breastfeeding Pain lanolin

Lansinoh Lanolin– this is the #1 recommended nipple cream by lactation consultants and doctors in the US.  Lansinoh Lanolin is also 100% natural, hypoallergenic, and free of parabens and preservatives.  If you’re like me and a bit of a minimalist when it comes to products, you’ll also love that this product is multi-purpose.  In addition to providing soothing relief to nipples, I also used it as a lip moisturizer on-the-go and kept it in my cosmetic bag.

Breast Relief Pads to Check Out

Breastfeeding Pain therapearl

Lansinoh TheraPearl– These packs can be used as hot or cold therapy. The cold pack therapy is great for relieving engorgement, just throw it in the freezer. The hot pack therapy helps relieve plugged ducts, mastitis, and encourages milk let-down, just throw it in the microwave. If you’re a working and pumping mama, you might also appreciate that these can reduce your time in the pumping room at work. Just heat, insert in the covers and snap onto any breast pump flanges to increase milk production.

Breastfeeding Pain booby tubes

Earth Mama Booby Tubes– If you’re eco-minded or have very sensitive skin, you may want to consider Earth Mama’s Booby Tubes. The unique gel-free construction of these tubes was designed to help reduce the risk of burns. Unlike gel packs, they’re made with flax seed but like gel packs can be used cold or hot to help relieve nipple and breastfeeding pain. On the brand’s alternative use list, Earth Mama says that the heat and cold from this product “can also be used for everything from sore muscles and that time of the month to aching ears and bellies.”
