DIY Flower Bouquet for New Moms

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

May is all about Mother’s Day, and while we love to celebrate Mother’s Day  – moms, especially new moms, deserve a treat anytime of the year! We asked Carrie Crowell, of Crowell Floral, to share a fun Springtime DIY project: creating a gorgeous flower arrangement which you could bring to any new mom in honor of her hard work and new baby. Take it away, Carrie!

The days and weeks after a baby is born are often filled with visits from excited friends and family, new gifts, helpful (and sometimes unsolicited) advice, a little anxiety and a lot of joy. The best advice I’ve received from a new mother is that visitors should keep their drop-ins short and sweet, to which I might add: why not leave behind a memorable and happy floral arrangement?

If you are feeling adventurous, it would be even more special if you created the arrangement yourself for the new mama and baby to admire during those sleepless nights. I love delphinium, spirea, queen anne’s lace, pink and white roses, snapdragons, sweet peas, anemones, and other delicate flowers. It’s best to avoid overbearing scents (like lilies and geraniums) and focus on a soft color palette and gentle fragrances. These brand new days should be acknowledged with beauty and tenderness.

Below you will find a step by step guide on how to create something spectacular and special for mama and baby.

Step 1: Gather your supplies (any craft or floral store should have all you need):  proper floral shears, opaque vase (if using foam), oasis/floral foam, flower food, a few different types of flowers from your local grocery store, wholesaler, or farmer: greenery, (ex. eucalyptus, Italian ruscus, or lemon leaf), a focal flower (ex. peony, rose, or dahlias), “wispy” elements and secondary focal flowers (ex. delphinium, larkspur, veronica, astilbe or ranunculus), base flowers (ex. hydrangea, hyacinths, etc)

Step 2: Soak oasis in water and flower food until saturated and decide if you want to do a front facing arrangement for a mantle or against a wall or a full arrangement for a table.

Step 3:  Start with the greenery – have some pieces drape over the sides and some going straight up. Here I used Eriostemon.

Step 4: Then add your wisps and secondary flowers. I used spirea, larkspur, and ranunculus at various heights.

Step 5: Begin using some base focal flowers to fill in and cover up the oasis. This step creates a buoyant and bountiful arrangement. I used hyacinth and hellebores.

Step 6: Finally, add your main attraction! I used peonies. Make sure all the oasis is hidden and there aren’t any bald spots and that all the stems are in the foam to insure they are all getting a good drink.

Happy Mother’s day to new moms, veteran mamas, and all those who guide and love us like a mother.

UpSpring Baby: Health & Wellness Improvement for Mom

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

This is more of a momprenuers (plural) feature. We speak with Lisa Williamson Rowe, co-founder and CEO of UpSpring Baby – a brand that creates first-of-their-kind products for today’s modern family. UpSpring’s mission is to improve the lives of moms and babies alike and create products that promote health, wellness, and safety. With Mother’s Day around the corner, it seemed like the perfect time to sit down and speak with Lisa about UpSpring’s dedication to health and wellness improvement for mom.

Lisa Rowe of UpSpring

GG: How did you decide to launch your business? Tell us a little more about UpSpring.
LR: We [along with fellow co-founders Julie Jumonville and Dede Woodman] were three mom entrepreneurs that saw unmet needs in the mom & baby market. In 2005, we decided to partner up and create products that met those needs. Our first two products were Milkscreen, an at-home alcohol detection kit for breast milk, and Walking Wings, a unique tool for babies learning to take their first steps.

qh-001_3z

GG: How do you balance work and family?

LR: In my home, we definitely have family focus time, like dinner time.  However, UpSpring has really just become part of our daily life and my family is likewise so much a part of UpSpring. My children and family life have inspired the UpSpring brand in many ways, and have given input and feedback all along the way as we’ve built the company.

Milkscreen
GG: What’s the best part of being a mompreneur?
LR: It is just so rewarding partnering with other mom entrepreneurs and sharing products.  We are now a village and that village includes other mom inventors, pediatricians and medical experts all sharing our dedication to promote wellness.

Some of Gugu Guru’s favorite products from the UpSpring catalog:

  • Milkscreen is an easy-to-use at home test that detects alcohol in breast milk. Because everyone metabolizes alcohol differently, the amount of time it takes for alcohol to leave your breast milk also varies. Now you may never have to pump and dump breast milk again.
  • Milkflow is a concentrated blend of natural herbal extracts including fenugreek and blessed thistle. This powdered drink mix helps you stay hydrated, promotes a healthy breast milk supply and is far more exciting to take than pills.
  • The Wellmom Breast Pillow is designed specifically to support the mother’s breast while breastfeeding. UpSpring’s new pillow is the first of its kind to provide optimal breast placement while nursing, which resolves the tiresome and painful-to-the-wrist act of physically holding the breast. The pillow lifts and comfortably supports the breast, and its stay-in-place cover holds the breast in position for hands-free nursing.
  • C-Panty: C Section Recovery Underwear: C-Panty after cesarean-section panty speeds recovery and slims post baby belly. Compression reduces pain and increases mobility. C-Panty takes care of you so you can take care of baby in comfort.
  • MS Panty: Postpartum Recovery Underwear: Designed for vaginal deliveries, MS-Panty is an after baby panty to speed up getting your pre-body back with just the right amount of compression.
  • Wellmom’s Organic Coconut Nipple Balm expedites healing and moisturizes tender skin with all natural ingredients that are okay for baby to ingest. Wellmom Coconut Nipple Balm does not contain lanolin, petrolatum, or parabens so you don’t have to remove the balm before breastfeeding baby.
  • Shrinkx Hips Ultra is the first and only wrap clinically proven to narrow hips after delivery. Shrinkx Hips works thanks to the hormone Relaxin which loosens pelvic joints and ligaments for childbirth. Relaxin stays in your system up to 8 weeks after delivery. Wearing Shrinkx Hips during this time gently guides hips back to their pre-pregnancy position, or smaller.
  • Shrinkx Belly Postpartum Belly Wrap helps you lose inches faster off your belly and waist after delivery. Triple compression customizes fit so you can look and feel better sooner.

Traveling Picks

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

By Gugu Guru Travel Editor: Mackenzie Dawson
I love to travel. Sometimes I think I feel most like myself when I’m getting my passport stamped or looking up train times on a Departures board. When was pregnant with my son, I worried about all sorts of things — but one of my concerns was that having a baby would “ground” me, clip my wings. A friend with three kids set me straight (this friend once went camping with 3 kids in Iceland, so she isn’t messing around.) “It isn’t going to be the same kind of travel, it’s not as light or spontaneous,” she said. “But you can absolutely keep doing it. It’s all about being strategic and having a plan.” Part of that plan? Lightweight, smart-use baby items that will keep your little one comfortable on the go.

Here are a few of my picks:

DockATot-Deluxe-Baby-Lounger-Modpod_1_8d5b1772-19c0-4333-8d52-9ef115aed525DockATot
How cute is this little nest? Use it at home when you want to give your baby a comfortable place to lounge; pack it up for a lightweight lounger when you’re on the go. Comes in 2 different sizes; Deluxe Dock for babies 0-8 months old, and Grand Dock, for 9-36 months. (I’m digging these print covers, but sadly, there is no adult-sized dock.)

BabyZen YoYoBabyZen YoYo Stroller
Any parent/traveler knows you don’t want to be stuck lugging a gigantic, bulky stroller around the airport; it’s not a good look. Super-compact, the YoYo stroller is the first stroller that’s compliant with IATA overhead baggage guidelines for airlines — just fold it up, stick it in the cabin and you’re good to go.

pockit-1

GB Pockit Stroller
For parents with older kids (6 months and older) there’s the GB Pockit Stroller which is the world’s smallest folding stroller available on the market. This stroller is seriously compact — easy to fold up, it folds into a handbag-shaped package (with handle) and only weighs 9.5 lbs. The stroller handles well on streets and sidewalks. Forget having to check your stroller at the gate; this is the kind of thing you can toss into the overhead compartment and be good to go.

71z5bJM2a2L._SL1500_

TwelveLittle Unisex Courage Backpack
When you’re traveling with a little one, luggage selection is everything — bringing too many bags will not only weigh you down, you’ll spend the whole trip frantically rifling through bags, wondering where you put the wipes. That’s why I’m a fan of this unisex backpack, which includes an interior padded tech sleeve for protecting your laptop, insulated side bottle pockets, nylon changing pad, and a hidden zipper pocket for, um, those clothing items you need to stow away quickly out of sight until you get to a washing machine, stat.

New Mom Series: Selecting a Crib Mattress

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

This is our fifth post in Gugu Guru’s New Mom Series, where we provide helpful information for new and expecting moms about preparing and registering for baby. For this Crib Mattress feature, we have partnered up with new mama Lindsey Bonnice of Live Sweet Photography; leading organic mattress brand Naturepedic and; the Baby Safety Zone powered by the JPMA (Juvenile Products Manufacturing Association). JPMA is a national trade organization representing 95% of the prenatal to preschool industry dedicated to the safe manufacturing and usage of products. NP Lindsey just recently brought home her new son, Baby Finn, and one of the biggest questions that any new parent has is, “Will my new baby be a good sleeper?” Creating a safe and comfortable sleep environment for baby is the best thing you can do to ensure the first years are happy and healthy. Most experts will tell you that the safest place for an infant or child to sleep is in a fully functional, properly assembled, JPMA-certified: crib, bassinet, cradle, play yard, or toddler bed. All of these require a mattress – so what should you look for? NP2 Babies spend 12 to 16 hours per day on their crib mattress, making the mattress the most prominent object in a child’s environment for the first three years of their life and one of the most important items on your baby registry. Np5Here’s how to ensure you have  the best crib mattress for baby. Always use a properly fitting mattress as infants can suffocate in gaps between a poorly fitting mattress and the crib sides or ends.  Also key is selecting a mattress with a waterproof surface, which is essential for keeping your baby’s environment hygienic and protected from mold and bacteria growth within the mattress. Np7

Gugu Guru selected Naturepedic’s Lightweight Organic Cotton Crib Mattress with Ultra Breathable Mattress Pad for Finn’s nursery – which meets or exceeds safety and quality standards. The Lightweight Organic Cotton Crib Mattress with Ultra-Breathable Mattress Pad is a 2-stage crib mattress for babies and toddlers. It fits snuggly in baby’s crib and is lightweight (under 12 pounds), comfortable, and functional for your child’s needs from infancy through toddlerhood.

The 2-stage feature is fantastic as baby grows; infants require a firm surface for safety but as they get older, it is safe for them and more comfortable to sleep on the softer side. The Naturepedic crib mattress is certified organic to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). This ensures that your crib mattress meets a healthy non-toxic standard and is truly organic. The Ultra organic cotton waterproof fabric is durable and acts as a barrier to moisture, dust mites, and bedbugs. The mattress is designed for safety and can be used with or without the Ultra-Breathable Mattress Pad. Plus it has been thoroughly tested for chemical emissions and passes all flammability standards without the need for flame retardant chemicals or other barriers. Np8 What we really love about this mattress is the Organic Cotton Ultra-Breathable Crib Mattress Pad. The mattress pad is made with certified organic cotton fabric quilted to a unique 3D airflow spacer, and dissipates heat and moisture to reduce sweating and overheating. Soils on the mattress pad won’t penetrate the waterproof mattress core.

Lindsey Bonnice is a NY and PA based portrait and newborn photographer and mother. Follow her and her adventures into new mommyhood on her Instagram at @LiveSweetPhotography.  Baby Finn’s nursery is featured on Project Nursery and you can see where to purchase some of the adorable decor here.

Naturepedic Naturepedic specializes in the design and manufacturing of quality organic mattresses for infants, toddlers, children and adults that promote natural and organic materials, a non-toxic design, fire-safety, and overall health & safety. All Naturepedic natural and organic mattresses have been designed with the help of pediatricians, chemists, and engineers. They are constructed by Amish craftsmen in our GOTS certified factory in beautiful Chagrin Falls, Ohio. Research and design is coordinated by G.E.M. Testing & Engineering Labs in Cleveland, Ohio.

What Top Beauty Bloggers Want for Mother’s Day

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

By Beauty Editor Marina Klimasiewfski

This month I’ve interviewed top beauty bloggers, who also happen to be moms, on what they want for Mother’s Day. Many answers proved to be universal. Whether they have one child or six, boys or girls, newborns or teens, moms want a little bit of time for themselves, some time with their children, pampering, and above all else, SLEEP! I could certainly use all of the above.

“All I want for Mother’s Day is a NAP. j/k! (not really). For real though, I’d love to escape for a week to a spa retreat like Canyon Ranch and get all the spa treatments and just relax. I feel like as moms it’s important for us to take the time to just relax and chill out. We always have a million tabs open in our mind, so it would be nice to have a blank slate of a mind for a little while.” – Andrea Arterbery, freelance writer and blogger at www.theartofbery.com and mom to a boy toddler

“My daughter is an infant, and honestly, all I want is a long block of uninterrupted sleep. Six hours would be great; eight would be even better.” – Karen Monterichaud, creator of makeupandbeautyblog.com and mother to a new baby girl

“I’m a working mom of two little ones, and I miss them terribly when we’re apart. So for Mother’s Day, I would love to receive a “mom necklace” with their names – so that they can always be close to my heart. I’ve been browsing GracePersonalized, an Etsy shop with beautiful custom jewelry. Every piece they make is so lovely, it’s hard to choose just one!” – Daneen Baird, founder and writer of spoiledpretty.com and mom to a boy and girl

“I would like a nap without limits and a bowl of especially ripe strawberries that fits the same description.” – Bryce Gruber, editor of theluxuryspot.com with 3 children at home

“I’d like one of those cool wine-of-the-month memberships. I love wine, but feel I’m not being very adventurous lately. A wine of the month club would expand my horizons beyond my current $10-$12 rut. Oooh, I’d also like membership to a monthly lash extensions club. Is that a thing? I have zero patience (or time) for mascara these days. So yeah, monthly lash extensions would make me very happy this Mother’s Day.” – Felicia Walker Benson, creator of thisthatbeauty.com and mother to a girl toddler

“I’m a sucker for the decadent massages at the La Prairie spa. They take me from zero to Zen every time. A 50-minute Swedish melts my racing mind into a hazy, blissful stupor. I make an afternoon out of treatments, arriving early to sit around in the opulent waiting area. Nothing beats sitting in a dimly lit, tech-free shrine with a warm cup of chamomile tea, swaddled in a plush robe. ” – Polly Blitzer, founder of BeautyBlitz.com and mom to twin boys

“For Mother’s Day I asked my kids to go on a hike with me to the Hanakapiai Waterfall. It’s a somewhat strenuous 8 mile trek so of course they all said no! They want to have a beach day instead. As long as I have my favorite Elta MD sunblock and a good book it will be a good day. I’m dying to read The Age Fix by Anthony Youn, MD.” – Erika Valente, makeupbag.net and mother to three glamorous daughters living in Hawaii

“I would love a mani! I used to get them about twice a month, but since I had my second baby in January 2015, I’ve only had one! I can’t even do them at home. The times I’ve tried one of my kids will inevitably wake up early from a nap or need a diaper change. Not to mention, I could use a quiet hour of pampering!” – Anne Fritz Linval, Editor of Forever35.net and mom to a son and daughter

“Ethan is my 5th child, and I have a step-son too, which makes 6 kids…all boys even. I would love to say I want something solely for me. However, I actually just want the presence of mind to take in each moment fully with the boys. I never understood when people said it goes by in a blink of an eye, but having Ethan made me see it. Ethan is 8 months and my oldest son is 17. Suddenly you’re searching your memory to remember “moments” from the last 17 years. I just need that reminder each day to just take it all in and cherish it.” – Shannon Smyth creator of agirlsgottaspa.com and of a cruelty-free bath & body brand by the same name, as well as a mother to 6(!) boys

Christina Vargas Registry Must Haves

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

You may have seen our past post where we helped the ultimate fit mama and professional athlete, Christina Vargas, with her baby registry. If you’re one of those people who regularly uses the #fitfam hashtag on Instagram, you’re probably very familiar with this I.F.B.B. and two time Olympian figure and bikini pro. If not, you can get to know her on Instagram here and follow her postpartum fitness journey.

Christina had her beautiful baby girl, Isabella, earlier this year and is excited to share with us some of her favorite registry picks from Gugu Guru:

Christina Vargas

Animal Kingdom 3pc Bedding Set from Just Born for Baby
Christina made it clear from the start, she hates pink. She wanted something neutral and sophisticated for Bella’s nursery and selected the Animal Kingdom 3pc Bedding Set from Just Born for Baby.

Animal Kingdom 3pc Bedding Set Just Born for Baby

Mom paired the gender neutral gray and white palette of the set with a lilac paint color and finished the whole look off with the mobile.

twl-009-001-2

TWELVElittle Unisex Courage Tote
Christina is always on the move to or from the gym. She wanted a sleek diaper bag that didn’t look like a diaper bag and was roomie enough to carry some of mom’s essentials. Gugu Guru recommended the TWELVElittle Unisex Courage Tote to keep Christina looking stylish and feeling organized for her on-the-go lifestyle. There’s an interior large padded tech sleeve for all gadget protection. The bag has a waterproof lining and lots of pockets for storage. It fits an iPad, which is a perk when Christina is creating her postpartum work-out program for moms. The hidden zipper pocket on bottom of back side for dirty item quick storage is especially useful for both mom and Bella.

714LceLaPoL._SX522_Lansinoh Double Electric Breast Pump
As for a pump, Gugu Guru suggested something small but powerful – just like Christina – and that is the Lansinoh Double Electric Breast Pump. This pump is really amazing for the cost and is absolutely ideal for a mom on the move due to its compact size and light weight.  First time pumpers seems to be especially thrilled with how gentle the Lansinoh pump is on the breasts, compared to other products in the market. It also boasts easy to assemble and clean parts, three customizable pumping styles and eight adjustable suction levels.

Product Discovery: bambu kids

by Gugu Guru 1 Comment

When new parents think about feeding their babies and toddlers, most of the time they think about what they are going to feed their little ones. However, parents often forget that what they put baby’s food in, and how they feed them is just as important! bambu kids features bowls, utensils, and even straws, which are all made from organic bamboo. As a wonderful and safe alternative to plastic, these products are all BPA free and finished with organic flax seed oil. Bambu Kids’ bowls, spoons, and bibs would make a perfect addition to any baby shower gift, especially for a mom who loves to cook!

BambuKids

The baby feeding spoons are designed as baby’s first foray into utensils; with a handle long enough for mom or dad, but a spoon-part small enough for baby’s mouth, these spoons are designed for ages 6 months and up. The spoons are made from a single piece of USDA certified organic bamboo and finished with a food safe oil derived from the flax seed. They are a safe and healthy alternative to plastic, free of phthalates and BPA.

As baby eats more and more solids, they’ll need a bowl to hold their food! This Bambu Kids’ bowl is made from USDA certified organic bamboo and finished with a food safe oil derived from the flax seed. Its rounded edges are easy for little hands to grasp and it is shaped to help avoid spills. As a healthy alternative to plastic bowls, your baby can knock this bowl on the ground and you won’t have to worry about shattering or breaking!

When it comes to keeping your baby clean during feedings, the Hemp Denim Baby Bib is a wonderful and safe alternative to vinyl or plastic bibs. This reversible bib is machine washable and accented with cotton piping to make it comfortable for baby. Made from a blend of hemp and certified organic cotton, this bib will surely last from babyhood to toddlerhood and even beyond.

City Living Registry Picks with Nikki Dinki

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Here at Gugu Guru, we’ve found that while suburban-living moms and city-dwelling moms seem to need a lot of the same baby products on their registry, there are a few items which city moms seem to gravitate towards over and over. Because space is limited in apartment living, there are a few products which just stand out for city-moms as must-haves! Nikki Dinki, TV host of Junk Food Flip on the Cooking Channel, cookbook author, radio host, and voiceover artist, shared her must-have items for a foodie mom recently, and now she’s back to share her must-haves for a city-mama who is always on the go!

As a mother whose first baby, Willa, tragically passed away, Nikki was on the hunt for a product which would put her mind and heart at ease all hours of the day. Even if Nikki runs around the block to the deli, she can check on her phone that her baby is doing well! P.S. Owlet is offering $20 off the Owlet Monitor for Gugu Guru readers. Halo Bassinest

The Halo Bassinet Luxe Plus Series is a one of a kind item for parents living in an apartment. With mesh sides, so baby can breathe easy, the Halo Luxe Plus also has a side wall which lowers down, making it especially perfect for post c-section mamas to pick up the baby without straining. The Luxe Plus features a nightlight, 3 lullabies, 3 nature and womb sounds, 2 levels of vibration and nursing timer with auto shut off. It also has two generous storage pockets for diapers and essentials – it’s basically an on-the-go nursery which you can move around your apartment! Its smaller size makes it perfect for smaller homes, and the most amazing feature is that it can swivel 360 degrees! No longer do apartment-dwelling parents need to worry about where to fit a crib or bassinet; the Halo Bassinet will fit wherever you need it because it can swivel, and get right up next to the bed.
