Back to Sleep Day 12: Owlet

by Gugu Guru 6 Comments

With unintentional suffocation the leading cause of injury death among U.S. children under the age of one, it’s no wonder parents often have trouble getting a good night’s sleep during baby’s first year.  So, on the twelfth day of Back To Sleep, we are featuring a company that has an amazing mission when it comes to safe sleep: Owlet. Owlet is a device worn like a sock on your baby’s foot designed to alert you if your baby stops breathing. With the Owlet monitor, parents and caregivers can rest easy knowing there is an extra set of eyes watching over baby. GG_BacktoSleep_2016-33 gadget

While Owlet is certainly cutting edge, this is actually a “smart” device you don’t really need to be a gadget geek to appreciate. The Owlet device uses hospital technology called pulse oximetry, miniaturized into a snuggly Smart Sock that your little one wears to bed at night. The base station collects vitals data from the Smart Sock via bluetooth to the base station located on the parents’ night stand. Then parents can remotely monitor vitals within the smart phone app.

WorkingMom

If you’re a working parent and especially one that may leave baby at daycare, you can have peace of mind that Owlet is monitoring baby, providing peace of mind. Owlet is the only monitor that uses hospital technology designed to alert if your baby’s heart rate or oxygen fall outside of range. Plus if both parents work both of you can access your child’s information on the Owlet app from your respective smartphones.

small-businessOwlet was founded by a team of passionate parents who wanted to bring themselves—and other parents around the globe—peace of mind. The co-founders of Owlet, all of whom are young fathers, have learned firsthand what it is like to lose sleep worrying about their babies. As parents, the team at Owlet feels that they are their own target market – all have young children and all have experienced the stress of coming home that first night and the hundreds of the feelings and emotions that come with it. The Owlet team is built around this knowledge and passion for helping others.

Back To Sleep Day 4: Nanit

by Gugu Guru 1 Comment

Today we’re highlighting a brand new, truly “smart” baby monitor on the market that provides deep insights into your baby’s sleeping habits – Nanit.

GG_BacktoSleep_2016-23

gadget

What makes Nanit different is that it actually measures and understands sleep using computer vision and machine learning. It tells you how long your baby slept, analyzes sleep patterns, keeps track of nighttime visits, plus delivers summaries of day and night sleep — helping both you and baby get more zzz’s. Not only that, but Nanit provides a crystal-clear live stream of the crib from a patented bird’s eye perspective and has superior night vision (no more fuzzy images!) So you’ll always have the best view of baby in the crib.

WorkingMom

If you’re a working mom, rest assured that as long as Nanit’s connected to the Internet, you’ll be able to monitor your baby via Nanit’s app from anywhere in the world; whether it’s your office or on a business trip. In addition, multiple users (e.g., dad, caregivers – even grandparents!) can access Nanit’s camera at the same time via Nanit’s app. You can set up multiple users for your account through the app’s settings.

multiples

More than one baby on the way? The Nanit may be a good fit for you! While parents of multiples need to buy separate Nanit cameras to keep an eye on both children, the app is designed to allow parents to seamlessly switch between the two camera views.

DIY Burp Cloth Tutorial

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Let’s get crafty! See Kate Sew partners with Gugu Guru once again to share a fantastic DIY tutorial.  We’re all about nursing in this post co-sponsored by Momsense.

I’m so excited to be here sharing a burp cloth tutorial today! I’ve never really needed burp cloths before, my baby #3 is a little bit of a spitter!

momsense-10

We partnered with Momsense for this tutorial for Breastfeeding Awareness Month! The Momsense Smart Breastfeeding Meter is a new product that tracks how much your baby is eating! The meter has a pair of headphones equipped with a microphone that safely sticks to baby’s neck. The microphone amplifies her sucks and swallows for you to hear. It also has a little animation that goes with it and it translates the swallows to give you a good sense of how much milk your baby is getting!

burpcloth-1

My older daughter loves to listen in and it’s so fun to involve the kids and dad in the breastfeeding experience. I needed this meter about 6 years ago with my first when I was struggling with milk supply, so I’m so glad it’s on the market now!

momsense-4

My favorite part about the meter is how inspiring it is to a breastfeeding mama! It’s so neat to see and hear how effective your breastfeeding session is and is pushing us to get the best and longest breastfeeding experience possible. Read my full review on SeeKateSew.com to hear all about my struggle with supply and how the Momsense Smart Breastfeeding Meter has been a game changer for us!

momsense-9

Today we’re making burp cloths lined with absorbent towel material! I thought lemon fabric would be cute since we’re talking about eating! The back of the cloths are made from a towel. You can either use a pre-made towel or terry cloth material for the backing. The only other thing you need is the pattern (provided below) and basic sewing supplies.

burp-cloth-4

Let’s get started!

Materials:
–See Kate Sew Burp Cloth Pattern
-a store-bought towel or terry cloth material
-1/4 yard cotton ( lemon fabric source)

Print out the burp cloth pattern at 100% (do not scale). Cut off the overlap and tape the 3 pages together. It will look like this:

layout

tutorial

  1. Use the pattern piece to cut out 1 piece from cotton and 1 piece from your towel material.
  2. Put the cotton piece on top of the towel piece with the right sides together.
  3. Pin and sew the front and back together 3/8″ from the edges, leaving a 2-3″ opening on one side.
  4. Turn the burp cloth right side out through the opening you left. Press. Turn the opening edges in.
  5. Topstitch around the cloth 1/4″ from the edge. The opening will be closed as you do this.

You’re done! A little stack of these make a really cute shower gift (maybe paired with a Momsense meter!).

Newborn Lockdown!

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

One of the reasons pregnant mamas love registering on Gugu Guru is that we simplify every product into a very real life scenario and category. We know that registering can be overwhelming, which is why we are here to hold your (possibly swollen) hand and walk you through all the different categories when it comes to new-parenthood. The first stop in newborn land is what we like to call “Newborn Lockdown” – Newborn Lockdown describes those very early few weeks when you literally don’t leave the house, whether it’s because you’re healing, breastfeeding, exhausted, or simply too nervous to take that tiny baby into the giant world! We’ve gathered together some of our favorite products for surviving those first few weeks on lockdown – and if you’re not registering or pregnant, we highly recommend buying some of these items for your new mama friend (you can thank us later!).

NewbornLockDownMama

For Mama –

Nesting Days Carrier: In those very early days of newborn-hood, it seems like baby never wants to be put down! The Nesting Days Carrier is unique in that it can be worn two ways – wear it at home (and get a chance to use your hands again!) for skin-to-skin time with baby; it also helps pull in your stomach muscles and provide tummy support. Or, use it out and about over your clothing for a hands-free way to carry baby close to you.

Victoria’s Secret Hoodie and Sweats: We know all you want to do is lie around with the baby, so why not look adorable doing it? We are loving these super soft “Boyfriend Pants” and hoodie from Victoria’s Secret – plus, the hoodie makes whipping your boobs out for breastfeeding all day long so much easier!

Netflix: Don’t have a Netflix account? You need one now – you’ll be spending many, many long hours rocking, feeding, and shushing a baby, the least you can do is binge watch The Gilmore Girls while you do it! (We highly recommend Dawson’s Creek and Felicity, too!). A Netflix account makes a wonderful baby shower gift, as well – mama can even watch on her phone late at night!

Silverette Nursing Cups: Are you breastfeeding your newborn? Check out Silverette Nursing Cups, which are small nursing cups made out of 925 silver to help protect the nipples while breastfeeding.  Silver is a natural antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory element and it heals and prevents cuts, wounds, cracks, soreness and infections. These cups are essential for anyone who is having problems with painful nipples or want to use them as a precautionary measure. They are completely easy to use and no creams or lotion are needed.

For Baby –

Owlet Baby Monitor: It’s nerve-wracking to bring home a newborn baby, especially for first time parents! It seems as though many parents are even too nervous to fall asleep because the baby seems so tiny and new – but, Owlet Smart Sock is here to help. The Owlet Smart Sock is a bootie which your infant wears, and uses hospital technology called “pulse oximetry” to monitor your baby’s breathing. The Owlet monitor relays the information and connects to your smartphone, so even if you’re cooking dinner downstairs, you can check on your baby’s breathing.

DockATot: The DockATot is a completely unique and versatile product for babies to lounge, relax, or play in. The unique shape and design allow babies to comfortably rest, play, snuggle and log in some tummy time. The idea is that your little one feels snuggled in a safe haven that feels a lot like the womb. The bumpers are made with a special air-permeable fabric that makes DockATot particularly worry-free. The DockATot is very lightweight and perfect for families who travel!

To register for these items, head over to our registry page and add them (and many, many other must-have items) to your personalized registry!

Cause-Driven Baby Registry: 4moms

by Gugu Guru 1 Comment

Continuing with our Cause-Driven Registry with Nicole Ryan, this week we feature 4moms, whose aim is to make dramatically better baby gear by leveraging robotics, technology, and innovative design to solve parents’ problems. You may have heard of 4moms before, as they are the brain behind amazingly popular baby items such as the mamaRoo, bounceRoo, and breeze playard.

mR3_fanned out

The mamaRoo, one of their most famously known baby products has been a lifesaver for parents worldwide ever since it debuted on the market. The mamaRoo is unique (and much loved) because it bounces up and down and sways from side to side, just like parents do when comforting their babies. The mamaRoo features five unique motions and five speed options. Soothe your baby with one of the four built-in sounds, or connect any MP3 device to the mamaRoo. The mamaRoo seat offers full recline to allow baby to lie back and relax or sit up and play.

mmR3_lifestyle34moms Cares is the charitable arm of 4moms.  Their mission is to dramatically impact the lives of children and families in need through meaningful product donations, hospital discounts, and by supporting our local communities.

Over 300 maternity wards, NICUs, and pediatric units across the U.S. use the 4moms mamaRoo to comfort newborns. Doctors and nurses have found it transformational in caring for preemies and babies with severe conditions such as Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome. 4moms Cares offers a product discount to hospitals and health care centers.

In addition to helping individual families and non-profits on a monthly basis, 4moms Cares supports organizations like Operation Shower, The Good + Foundation and Project Sweet Peas with larger product donations.

Cause-Driven Baby Registry: Owlet

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Continuing with our Cause-Driven Registry with Nicole Ryan, this week we feature a different kind of mission with Owlet baby monitors. Owlet aims to create the highest quality product for the value, and ultimately envisions a day where every baby goes home from the hospital with a monitor like Owlet. It’s what they call the “car seat effect”…

40 years ago, nobody used a car seat when driving with their baby. Babies were held in laps. 40 years ago, about 400 babies died each year in car crashes. Obviously, that has totally changed today. You can’t leave the hospital without a car seat. Somebody came up with the idea of an infant safety seat, something convenient that also kept your baby safe.

owletlfiestyle

When we look at babies who pass away due to breathing problems, it’s about 4,000 infants per year. This is 10x more of a problem than car seats ever solved. The occurrences of healthy infants passing away at home in the crib due to breathing issues is far too high, and many of these deaths are preventable.

Owlet is working toward a future where far fewer tragedies are happening to the infants we love so much. The ability to integrate medical technology in a baby sock is going to change that. Owlet wants to create a world where every baby comes home from the hospital with a health monitor like the Owlet sock. It just makes sense. Infant health monitoring will become standard, and Owlet will be a leader in that. Owlet can provide a platform that gathers and collects data of health in the home.

WAHM Baby Registry Must-Haves

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Did you know? July 4th isn’t just Independence Day, it’s also National Work from Home Day. Gugu Guru’s team is comprised of many work at home mamas and we’ve learned a thing or two about some products that you should add to your registry if you plan on working from your home office too.

Working from home is so great for many reasons if your career allows it, but it still comes with its challenges.  If you’re expecting it to be much easier than going back to work or being a full time stay at home mommy, then you might be in for a little surprise. Don’t get me wrong – I wouldn’t change it for the world but just be ready for the fact that you’ll still have the guilts and you will still feel isolated (maybe even more so than being a SAHM because you’ll have a work schedule and won’t necessarily be free to hit those mommy and me classes) so it’s important to have some basic gear in place to make it easier all around. Once you get into your groove, you will love the flexibility it provides and the fact that you can be close to your baby, while also continuing with your career if that’s something you want to do (or maybe need to do for financial reasons).

Graco Bumper Jumper (Seen here in Little Jungle)
This Graco jumper kept my son occupied and super happy; I could tackle emails or have a quick call. This is great for when baby is around 6 months old and can lift his or her neck.

WiFi Baby Monitor
Regardless of whether you’re stay at home, work from home or back to the office, you’ll need a good monitor. WiFi Baby is a top-rated wireless network-based monitor and Nanny Cam that keeps you connected to your child via apps on iPhone, iPad or Android. Anywhere.

Monica Banks of Gugu Guru on Treadmill Desk

Treadmill Desk Mount
Fitting in workouts when you’re a WAHM is tough. My sister told me about a treadmill desk.  The entire desk with treadmill is a few thousand dollars on Amazon – thus out of my budget – but we have a treadmill and I spotted this attachment for around $40. I set it at 1.1 miles per hour when I work and wind up burning a whole bunch of calories.  I’m a pacer anyway (like I can never sit when I talk on the phone) so this works great for me.  It has also helped my back since I am not leaning over the laptop on my dining room table anymore.

DockATot
It’s important to also have a portable place for baby to relax when you’re working from home. Some bassinets or play yards are just too heavy or wide to carry from room to room. We love the DockATot for a lot of reasons but one of the big ones is the portability factor.  Plus the Deluxe seen here can be used when your baby is a newborn (and he or she is sure to love it!)
