by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

When it comes to baby gear essentials for your registry, the 4moms mamaRoo®4 is a baby swings top pick and a Gugu Guru favorite for new parents for so many reasons. When choosing between baby swings, it can be hard to decide which to get, but you’re ultimately going to want to pick the swing that offers you the most variations for your baby, as well as the most high-tech! Don’t take our word for it, check out what our Chief Baby Planner, Julie McCaffrey has to say:

The 4moms mamaRoo®4 is going to become your very best friend when baby is born. It’s not a surprise that babies love to be rocked and swayed, as it reminds them of being in utero and the 4moms mamaRoo®4 does more than simply rock your baby.

baby swings best pick - mamaroo4

In the 4moms mamaRoo®4 baby bounces gently up and down and sways from side to side, mimicking the movement of a caregiver or parent. As far as baby swings go, the 4moms mamaRoo®4 is your best bet for options for baby, as it has five unique motions and five speed options for a total of 25 different combinations. This is wonderful because if baby gets bored or fussy in one motion or speed, you have a wide variety of options to change it up for them. Did you know baby swings aren’t just for newborn tiny babies? The 4moms mamaRoo®4 offers full recline to allow baby to lie back and relax or sit up and play.

You don’t often consider how important baby swings are for postpartum recovery, but many times it can be hard for a mom who has just had a c-section or tough delivery to get up and down when baby needs to be rocked back to sleep. This is another reason why the 4moms mamaRoo®4 is our pick when it comes to baby swings. The 4moms mamaRoo®4 is Bluetooth enabled, this means you can control the motion and sound on the 4moms mamaRoo®4 directly from the 4moms Android or iOS App! Super high-tech and very necessary for postpartum recovery and beyond.

Moms to Know: Coraline and Us

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Here at Gugu Guru we are all about celebrating all types of families, so when we came across the blog Coraline and Us, we knew we wanted to have Liz, the mama behind the blog, come and share her story. Liz started her blog upon the birth of her adorable little Coraline, when it was “discovered unexpectedly within hours, that she has Down’s Syndrome and two holes in the heart.  We did not know anything about Down’s Syndrome when she was born. This blog is about our journey of growth.” Read on for more about Liz, Coraline, and Kevin and stay tuned for more blog posts from Liz on helpful baby products, toys, and more for babies with Down’s Syndrome. You can find Liz on her blog, Facebook, and Instagram.

My greatest love is to travel, both for work and personally. I also love open water swimming, the sea, nature, stickers, writing, letter writing, slush puppies, romantic movies, watching TV in a rug, hiking, airports, Oprah Winfrey and the game Boggle. I live in London, have a wonderful family with Australian and Dutch roots and a best friend who makes me roar with laughter. This is why it’s so funny that I have not been on a plane in nine months. But the journey I am on since Coraline was born last August is more vivid than any I could have imagined.

I met my partner Kevin on Tinder three and a half years ago, when I had just turned 39 years old. The best friend I mentioned chose him on my Tinder whilst we were watching an ice hockey match, amidst slush puppies and hot dogs. Kevin and I met up in central London and sat on some steps outside a wine bar. He ordered a glass of Madeira and showed me a video of himself doing the ice bucket challenge. I said to my younger brother after our first date, “I’ve met the man I’m going to marry”. We are in fact getting married in two months’ time!

Kevin adores snowboarding, he equally adores funny videos of animals. He has the most incredible energy and warmth and ability to support and love me before I even ask. He leaves me notes in the morning. He is his own composed and confident man. He was a chef for 17 years and is passionate about nutrition. My friend loves to laugh, “freezer meals they said,” after Coraline was born and he was cooking us restaurant style fayre. He is the ball of energy at a social gathering. A friend recently said, “you don’t realise the feeling you’re looking for when you’re looking for a partner”. He said, “it’s like you met your heart and soul.” We have this feeling for Coraline too.

We moved in together a couple of years after we met, and we tried for a baby just after I turned 41. Coraline was born before I turned 42 (the age I am now). Within hours of her birth she was diagnosed with Down’s Syndrome and all I remember in my mind’s eye is myself in a hospital room (where we stayed for a week) at sea, with a steady beat of tears for the first 24 hours. Wide eyed talking to anyone from the hospital who came to our room, tears spilling from my eyes. Not so Kevin. Kevin rang our families and said, “we have had a baby daughter and she is beautiful. She most likely has Down’s Syndrome and two holes in the heart. All I want to hear is Congratulations”. He set the tone there and then. Since then we have met many amazing people, my tears have turned to deep joy, and my pen has been flowing, eager to write about all that has swirled around us.

I just knew I had to write after she was born to share what we learned, and began doing so when Coraline was two days old in that hospital room. I was first writing for friends on an Instagram account, but their comments inspired me to set up a blog.

“Liz you’re making me smile on a daily basis at the moment with your insights.”

“I get up in the morning and your posts are the first thing I check. They are emotive and inspiring.”

“I look forward to each of your postings. They are wonderful to read. Coraline has led you to your calling in life! You should be writing. This is the beginning of your first book!”

So, the blog is about Down’s Syndrome and what we are learning, but in fact it’s about much more. It’s really about life philosophies and learnings we have picked up along the way and about celebrating living from the heart. The universality of taking the path of love, over the path of fear. I think that’s what makes our blog unique and, in fact, of resonance to everyone.

I worked at the British Council, the U.K.’s Cultural Relations organisation, for 14 years. At the heart of all the international programmes I worked on was broadening horizons and changing perspectives.

I wanted to write as I knew we were going to learn so much and I wanted to share this with others, because the reason I felt so at sea when Coraline was born was because I knew nothing. My aim is that friends of mine will feel familiar if they meet a person with Down’s Syndrome, or if there’s a child with Down’s Syndrome in their son or daughter’s class at school. My goal is to expand my blog to raise awareness and celebrate Coraline.

Hospital Bag Checklist: 5 Must-Haves You Might Forget

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Looking for a hospital bag checklist? If you’ve been on Pinterest lately, you’ve probably seen a thousand hospital bag checklist printables and pins. Truth is that a LOT of things parents bring to the hospital are a matter of opinion and personal preference but when it comes to the hospital bag checklist must-haves, Gugu Guru turns to Nikki Gill AKA The Mommy Pro for her guidance. Why? Nikki is not only a professional maternity consultant and founder of The Cradle & All Baby Concierge, she is a registered nurse who has extensive perinatal experience.

Hospital Bag Checklist Item #1: Birth Plan
If you have a birth plan make sure that you bring a copy of it just to make sure everyone is on the same page and knows exactly what you want. Keep in mind that sometimes deliveries do not go as planned especially in emergent situations and your birth plan may not be followed. (Need a birth plan but don’t know where to start? Our experts can help with our Labor and Delivery Prep Workshop.)

Hospital Bag Checklist Item #2: Going Home Outfit for Mom and Baby
Hospitals provide gowns for mommy and clothes for baby during the hospital stay. However, you do want to make sure that both of you have something of your own to go home in. (Pssst: Gugu Guru loves Monica + Andy for take me home outfits!)

Hospital Bag Checklist Item #3: Car Seat
This item of course can not fit in a bag however it’s essential for you to take baby home. Before baby is able to leave the hospital, a car seat test is performed just to make sure that baby will be able to tolerate being in a car seat. If possible have a Certified Car Seat Technician (like Tot Squad) in your area teach you the correct way to install a car seat.

Hospital Bag Checklist Item #4: ID & Insurance Card
Prior to admission you will have to be registered in the hospital system. At a time like this you definitely do not want anything to hold up the process. Making sure that you have your identification card and insurance will help the process go smoothly.

Hospital Bag Checklist Item #5: Phone and Charger
Being able to communicate with your loved ones near and far will probably be a priority for you. Make sure that you have your cellphone and a charger so that you can keep in constant communication with your loved ones.

Best Wrap Carrier for Active Mamas

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

When a new baby comes along, it’s tempting to stay put in the Newborn Lockdown stage and hunker down with Netflix, but often times there are other kids to tend to, dinner to be made, and maybe even those evening walks with your favorite dog as the sun goes down. With a wrap carrier for baby, you can resume your active lifestyle postpartum and keep baby close in the wrap carrier! The Baby K’tan Active Carrier is a wrap carrier essential for baby registries of all lifestyles, whether suburban or urban, working mom or stay-at-home, the Baby K’tan Active wrap carrier is your ticket to keeping up with all of your favorite activities and events, whatever your active style.

wrap carrier

One of the reasons we’re such big fans of the Baby K’tan Active wrap carrier is that it is incredibly easy to use. The Baby K’tan Wrap Carrier has a patented double-loop design that’s quick and simple to put on and take off with no buckling and no fussing with rings or snaps. Just slip it on like a t-shirt and comfortably carry baby from birth to toddlerhood in 5 different wearing positions. Plus, it is washable and very easy to travel with; no giant pieces of fabric or buckles to tuck into your diaper bag; it’s basically like packing an extra t-shirt!

The Baby K’tan Active wrap carrier is ideal for parents who love to get outside and stay active; it may seem that you would get overheated while carrying baby in a wrap carrier, but not with the Baby K’tan Active wrap carrier. The Baby K’tan Active carrier is made from a hi-tech performance fabric that wicks away moisture and sweat while blocking over 90% of the suns UVA and UVB rays – keeping baby and mom extra cool and protected when out and about. Furthermore, the Baby K’tan Original carrier is made from 100% all-natural cotton fabric, so you will stay cool and baby won’t get overheated in the wrap carrier. Each carrier type is available in a variety of lovely colors and patterns, so you are sure to find something which fits your personal style!

Baby K’tan Weekender Diaper Bag, Baby K’tan Newborn Swaddle, Baby K’tan Diaper Bag

We’re big fans of Baby K’tan because their mission is to make life easy for parents, whether it is with their simple wrap carrier which feels like a t-shirt, their Weekender Diaper Bag which holds pretty much everything you may need (and the kitchen sink), their Baby K’tan Diaper Bag which features 2 antibacterial pockets, 2 insulated bottle pockets, exterior water bottle and cell phone pockets, built-in antibacterial wet bag, and more, or their Newborn Swaddle, made of an innovative breathable stretch fabric – when it comes to essentials for your baby, Baby K’tan truly has you covered.

Newborn and Kangaroo Care Must Haves

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

What is kangaroo care? Think of it as a mama kangaroo putting her baby in her pocket. There are two things it seems that most newborn babies love: skin-to-skin contact with mom and being swaddled to sleep. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends daily skin-to-skin sessions throughout the first three months of a baby’s life; they make an evidence-based claim that to receive all the benefits, mom and baby need to stay skin-to-skin for 60 uninterrupted minutes…but, who has that much time to sit with a baby on her chest? While we’d love to stay on the couch or bed all day with a new baby, there are often dishes to wash, work to be done, and oh – other kids to tend to, also! When it comes to swaddles, swaddling is known to calm a baby’s Moro Reflex, which is an involuntary response to excessive sensual stimulus, in which the baby feels like he or she is falling; this reflex can wake a baby up out of sleep, so swaddling comforts baby, and almost feels like he or she is back in the womb – snug and sound. This is why the Gugu Guru team is so passionate about NuRoo Baby and their innovative NuRoo Pocket shirt and NuRoo Swaddler.

kangaroo care

The NuRoo Pocket Shirt, which comes both in short sleeve and long sleeve, is revolutionary kangaroo care in that it’s designed for hands-free skin-to-skin contact. Created using NuRoo’s signature fabric, the NuRoo Pocket allows you to spend more time skin-to-skin, as you can keep baby close and still use your hands! Designed to go on like a shirt, the NuRoo Pocket carrier eliminates wrapping, tying and knotting to make babywearing simple as can be. Their signature fabric is incredibly soft for even the most sensitive of baby’s skin, and the NuRoo uses flat lock stitching to make the design feel seamless so there aren’t any big chunky, uncomfortable seams chafing you and your peanut.

Another reason we suggest all moms register for the NuRoo Pocket Carrier is that as your postpartum body changes and your baby grows, the adjustable closures give you the perfect fit every time. The technical properties of the fabric keep you and baby cozy, so you can spend more time skin-to-skin. NuRoo also recognized that postpartum hormones can make mamas hot all the time, so the breathable, moisture-wicking fabric keeps you and baby cool and dry. With kangaroo care, you’ll naturally build heat wearing baby skin-to-skin, but the moisture is pulled out and released from the fabric, so your carrier won’t feel sweaty or wet.

kangaroo care

The NuRoo Pocket Carrier is machine washable, so you can simply throw it in with your regular laundry. And, it’s great to know that the NuRoo Pocket is the first and only skin-to-skin kangaroo care carrier to adhere to the sling/carrier standards, passing retention testing up to 45 pounds. Furthermore, The NuRoo Pocket has been acknowledged as a “hip healthy” product by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute, meaning that baby is in the proper M position making it ergonomic, and safe for baby’s hips. We think the NuRoo Pocket is a total must-have essential for Newborn Lockdown; just think: you can still have your hands for an iced tea in one hand, your phone in the other, and a your baby snug on your chest!

We’ve written about how much we love the NuRoo Swaddler before, and we highly recommend it to anyone building a Gugu Guru baby registry. Designed by two moms who wanted to innovate the traditional swaddle into a more functional baby product, the NuRoo Swaddler is a must-have newborn essential for so many reasons! It can be confusing to learn to swaddle a baby, especially when you’re exhausted and running on little sleep. However, with a pocket for baby and velcro wings, the NuRoo Swaddler takes user error and confusion out of swaddling. Simply place baby in pocket, position arms as desired, and secure velcro across baby’s chest. When baby starts to want their arms out, you can do that too, as a way to slowly transition out of the swaddler.

The NuRoo swaddler is also the only one with three distinct sizes built into one swaddle so that every stage of baby’s growth, the swaddle fits perfectly, without any excess material – a suffocation hazard. Plus, using the same innovative fabric as the Pocket Shirt, the Swaddler has the ability to pull sweat and moisture off baby’s skin, passing it through the material and releasing into the air to keep baby comfortable and dry, which means they will hopefully sleep better. The breathable, moisture wicking properties help regulate baby’s body temperature. Another reason the signature fabric makes a huge difference is that it offers compression; the compression fabric recreates the familiar comforting snug feeling of being in utero and therefore, eases baby’s transition from the womb. The compression fabric also decreases irritability and promotes self-soothing and enhances quality of sleep to improve rest and sleep cycle regulation.

The NuRoo Swaddler comes in three styles, and is approved for use with preterm and full-term babies! You can use the NuRoo Swaddle the day your baby is born, so be sure to wash and pack it in your hospital bag. It supports the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative, is used by leading institutions and approved for use in the NICU with pre-term infants.

You can learn more about the NuRoo Pocket Shirt kangaroo care and Swaddler on NuRoo’s website, Facebook, and Instagram.

Gugu Guru is so appreciative of our sponsors, thank you to NuRoo for making this sponsored post possible.

Best Bassinets for Babies: Gugu Picks

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Bassinets for babies are more popular than ever these days due to one of the 2016 safe sleep recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) being that infants sleep in the same room as the parents for at least the first six months and, optimally, for the first year of life, based on the latest evidence. So, unless you don’t have a nursery at all, you’ll likely need a sleeping arrangement for your bedroom as well. Here, we’ve rounded up the best bassinets for babies in 2018 according to Gugu Guru’s experts:

Gugu Pick for Best all Around: SNOO Smart Sleeper
While this bassinet may seem very expensive compared to other bassinets for babies on the market, when you break it down it is actually only around $5 a day for additional sleep for you and baby! The SNOO Smart Sleeper is a very safe bassinet with mesh walls, protective swaddle wings that ensure that baby stays on their back and the SNOO sack that ensures a secure swaddle that is hip safe. The SNOO Smart Sleeper not only looks beautiful but it chooses the best motion and white noise to soothe your baby and get him or her off to sleep. The SNOO can be used up to 6 months and even offers a gradual weaning feature to make the transition to the crib a little easier. Check out our Real Mom Review of the Snoo.

Gugu Budget Pick: Chicco Lullago
The Chicco Lullago is not only one of the best bassinets for babies that parents can use in any room of their home, but it’s easy to fold and lightweight – making it great for travel when baby is young. At only $99, the Chicco Lullago includes a mattress with a machine washable cover and a carry bag for when you travel with the bassinet. The Lullago also has mesh sides so it is easy to see baby from your bed and allows for circulation for baby. The design is simple and sleek so it will fit into almost any home design and the set up is super simple so anyone will be able to do it in a snap. (Can be used until 20lbs or when baby can go to their hands and knees.) Check out more of our budget registry picks.

Winter Nursery Must Have: Crane Humidifiers

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

-Sponsored Post-

With the onset of wintertime, comes the onslaught of colds, viruses, and the flu! While it can seem overwhelming trying to prevent your little ones from catching the latest cold, there are some natural ways to protect your babies, toddlers, and kids – and one of the methods we always recommend taking in any nursery or kid’s room is to have a cool mist humidifier. When it comes to humidifiers, we always turn to Crane USA – especially when it comes to sleep time! The Crane USA Adorables line of humidifiers are not only adorable, but a necessary addition to the bedroom. Stay wise this flu season and set your family up for success with Oscar the Owl, Crane Adorable Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier.

Did you know that according to the American Academy of Pediatrics there is actually no cure for the common cold? Since the cold is a virus, there is nothing you can do except help your little one stay comfortable – and the AAP recommends that a great way to do that is to make sure there is a cool mist humidifier near their sleeping area. As the AAP says, “Set it close to your child (but safely beyond reach) so that he or she gets the full benefit of the additional moisture.” The Oscar the Owl Crane Adorable Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier is a welcome addition to any child’s bedroom and will help soothe any little noses and airways if they do happen to get a cold.

With flu season running rampant this year, it’s imperative to help keep a baby’s and child’s nasal passages clear and clean to help prevent them from catching germs. The whisper quiet Oscar the Owl Humidifier relieves cough, cold, and flu symptoms, as well as nasal congestion, dry cough, sinus irritation, nose bleeds, and dry skin and hair. The ultrasonic cool mist increases moisture in the air for easier breathing and a good night’s sleep, plus it is a perfect size for any bedroom, and effectively humidifies small and medium rooms up to 500 square feet. It is also BPA free and features an auto-off function for when water tank is empty; safe enough to have in a child’s room.

During the winter, full of stuffy noses and congested chests, the AAP recommends using a cool-mist humidifier, so why not choose a humidifier which is both cute and will help your little one breathe a little easier at night? Plus, the Oscar the Owl Crane Adorable Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier is easy for parents to use too; it has a removable 1 gallon tank which easily fits under most bathroom sinks, and it doesn’t need a filter, so you never have to worry about changing filters! If the Owl isn’t your style, head to the Adorables and check out all the animals!

Must Have Essentials: Baby Basics

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

When it comes to Baby Basics, what are the essentials you need to add to your registry? We asked our seasoned baby planners what their top picks are for Baby Basic Must Have Essentials!

Jessica Zablan, The Birth & Baby Company –

Must Have Essential, Baby Basics: At The Birth & Baby Company, we make sure every baby registry has the FridaBaby 1st Aid Kit. You can never go wrong with their amazing nose sucker! It might be weird but it WORKS!

Amber Michels of Your Milk Shoppe –

Must Have Essential, Baby Basics: NoseFrida– this is a must and will contribute to parents and baby’s good night sleeps! It is not only safe, but super effective. Halo Sleepsack Newborn Multi-Way Cotton Swaddle– with so many swaddles, this is one that you can count on to keep your baby comfortable and secure. The Baby Shusher– white noise that works, ensuring your baby is soothed and sleeping!

Abby Ludwig, Gugu Guru Registry Consultant –

Must Have Essential, Baby Basics: When it comes to basics, there’s one item at the top of my list: swaddle blankets. These can be used to swaddle (duh!), as a soft place for tummy time (ooh!), as burp cloths (nice!)… and the list goes on and on! My favorites are the Aden + Anais Classic Swaddle Blankets, which are larger than most, soft, and breathable. Plus they come in lots of fun patterns and designs in every color. These are definitely a must have basic for new moms.

Ashley Akselband of Wellsprings Birth and Baby –

Must Have Essential, Baby Basics: I have two (smaller registry items, but still super helpful!) – the Boon grass drying rack which is great to dry bottles and/or breast pump accessories after washing, and the other would definitely be the NoseFrida – it’s the most amazing snot sucker on the market!

Olivia Howell, Gugu Guru’s Editor in Chief –

Must Have Essential, Baby Basics: I always had to have a super soft baby blanket around; we used them as burp cloths, blankies, even a makeshift diaper once or twice!

Alexa Rubin, Gugu Guru Business Development –

Must Have Essential, Baby Basics: Baby mittens are a must! Babies tend to scratch themselves and these are a lifesaver.
