Best Prenatal Vitamins: Ritual’s Essential

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Hey, Everyone – it’s Monica here, founder of Gugu Guru.  I know what you’re thinking, “Best prenatal vitamins? Aren’t all vitamins the same?” Quite simply, the answer is no, absolutely not. Today I want to share a vitamin company that you may have heard of already. It’s called Ritual and the brand just launched its new prenatal vitamin. At Gugu Guru, we think these are the best prenatal vitamins available today and the best multi-vitamins for women. Period.

best prenatal vitamins

If you take a vitamin every day, like 50% of Americans do, whether you’re pregnant or not, you need to check out Ritual. Like now. So what’s the hype? I was seriously blown away when I watched the video on why Katerina Schneider set out to create a better vitamin.  When she was four months pregnant, Katerina turned her house upside down to get rid of products with ingredients that she couldn’t stand behind from her laundry detergent to her deodorant.  However, she had a hard time figuring out what was in her daily multivitamin.  Then when she dug a little deeper, what she found was profoundly disturbing in terms of all the – for lack of a better word – crap that are in the average vitamin. Newsflash: some of these ingredients aren’t just crap – they’re actually potentially harmful.

So Ritual was launched and the brand is committed to creating the purest, most effective vitamin formulations, and sharing every ingredient, source & scientist that makes its vitamin a reality.

best prenatal vitamins

Gugu Guru believes the Essential Prenatal formula are the best prenatal vitamins because they contain all of the essential nutrients for mom that support energy, mood, and even her fertility, for a healthy pregnancy from conception to delivery, as well as all of the essential nutrients for baby that fuel health-vital development, including baby’s brain, vision, immunity, and metabolism. These include:

  • Folate – Helps prevent neural tube defects (which develop in the first 28 days). Our bodies can’t store folate and our need is almost doubled during pregnancy, so it’s important to take it early and consistently.
  • Iron – Maintains healthy blood cell levels for oxygen delivery and energy support.
  • Omega-3 – Sourced from DHA, omega-3s affect mood and support on-time, healthy babies.
  • Iodine – Crucial to producing thyroid hormone, which helps baby’s brain development. We need 50% more iodine during pregnancy, and our bodies don’t store it outside the thyroid.
  • Choline – Newly classified as an essential nutrient for infant brain development.
  • Vitamin D3 – Influences healthy birth weight. Plus, the more vitamin D mom has during pregnancy, the better her mood, which may help prevent postpartum depression.
  • Biotin – Helps the body convert food into energy. Up to 50% of women may get less of this vitamin than they need during pregnancy.
  • Vitamin E – protects cellular structure, helping to protect against free radicals and oxidation.
  • Vitamin K – Supports bone and blood vessel health.
  • Vitamin B12 – Supports blood cell production and brain health.
  • Magnesium – Balances calcium, while supporting healthy mood and cardiovascular health.
  • Boron – Works with calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D3 to support their functions.

Essential Prenatal utilizes a proprietary delayed-release nested capsule technology to combine these essential nutrients in their most easily absorptive forms. The innovative delayed release capsule bypasses the stomach and releases its contents evenly in the small intestine, for better absorption and reduced nausea.

best prenatal vitamins

Another reason why we think these are the best prenatal vitamins? While most prenatals require women to take 5-7 large, often nauseating pills to satisfy all their nutrient needs, Essential Prenatal’s two, small, once-daily capsules offer a more pleasant experience. Essential Prenatal also contains a natural, lemon-essenced tab since citrus is commonly craved in pregnancy.

best prenatal vitamins

Priced at just $35/month, Ritual will provide soon-to-be moms with monthly deliveries of 60 impeccably-engineered, naturally lemon-essenced capsules (two pills per day).

7 Ways to Make Pregnancy Easier During a Home Renovation

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Renovations and pregnancy are both stressful, and when you put them together, without a plan to mitigate the challenges of both at the same time, you may be in for trouble. Luckily, with a little prep, and a few pro tips from mother’s who’ve done it before, you can make pregnancy easier while you finish the new space that you’ll welcome your baby into.

Don’t Do It All At Once

Finishing a renovation is like ripping off a bandaid—once you get started, you just want to finish it as quickly as possible. But if you pile too much onto your plate, this will not only be stressful, but downright frustrating. If you over-promise what you can do, you’ll inevitably be disappointed.

Instead, focus first on the things that can be done while you’re pregnant, and push back the ones that can wait until you have more energy to complete them. This is especially important for working mothers, who will be spending the whole week working, before exhausting themselves with a long weekend of renovation work.

Have a Plan and Work Ahead

Both pregnancy and home remodeling can go awry at any moment, whether you’re hit hard with morning sickness one week or the contractor is 5-days behind schedule. Having a plan—and working ahead—makes it easier to manage these inconveniences when the renovation is happening.

When creating your plan, consider every detail, from choosing and purchasing your materials and replacement items (doors, cabinets, etc.) to putting plan B options in place if that ends up being the only choice. Colleen Shaut at CaseDesign explains:

“The last thing you want to be doing while pregnant is running around town trying to track down a cabinet, cabinet pull, hardwood floor stain or that striking accent tile you knew you should have ordered the moment you saw it.”

Keep the Work Area Blocked Off

Allergies are annoying enough. Add pregnancy into the mix, and they may feel impossible to deal with. To mitigate this issue during a home renovation, make a point to properly seal the work area, keeping dust out of the rest of the house.

“We always designate one doorway as the entry and exit to the work area before the project starts, and the other doors are sealed to limit where dust can travel. Covering furniture, air vents, and erecting dust walls and barriers along with attention to floor protection are also very important,” explains experts at Quality Craftsmen.

This can be done with simple plastic coverings for the doorways and windows as necessary.

Avoid The Workers (Including Your S.O.!)

This may seem odd, but Kara, of KyalandKara.com shared her personal experience renovating while pregnant, and shares a tip you don’t want to miss:

“It sounds weird, but the smell of Kyal and the boys after a hard days work is normally something that makes me happy (mainly because I know stuff is getting done). However, since being pregnant, this smell is something that sets my morning sickness right off. This and most other smells you’d expect with renovating—paint, glue, sawdust you name it.”

If the smells are still affecting you, find ways to avoid them during the day, using an essential oil diffuser, candles, and keeping the windows open.

Send Out Your Laundry

If your laundry room is a mess during the renovation, or part of the renovation itself, it can be impossible to get your clothes cleaned efficiently. Laundry is enough of a pain when pregnant, much less when you’re shimmying between tight spaces and weaving around obstacles.

Not to mention, laundry is a constant task that’s that’s only made more cumbersome with a growing belly. All of that aside, it takes 100 minutes to do one load of laundry, according to CD One Price Cleaners—and that’s not counting folding. Make your pregnancy easier during the home renovation by taking it off your hands altogether.

When choosing a fold and wash service, look for features like same-day pick-up (clothes dropped off and picked up on the same day), eco-friendly cleaners, and text notifications.

Hire a Cleaner

Cleaning, like laundry, is a necessary evil that you no one wants to do, pregnant or not. Add that to the extra stress of renovating your home, and you’ve got the recipe for a break down. Instead of taking everything on your own shoulders, ask for help. Not only does a cleaner relieve you of a chore no one wants to handle, but it ensures your home is as clean as possible, at a time when it will likely otherwise be a mess.

Most cleaners are inexpensive, at just $25 or $50 an hour, and even having someone do a monthly “deep clean” may be enough to keep your messy home manageable, while saving your sanity. Who knows, when the renovation is over and the baby comes, you may not want your cleaner to leave.

Be Open and Honest

A home renovation is stressful. When you add in the limitations of pregnancy, especially if you’re far along, it’s a breeding ground for fights, as Jamie explained, in a Bump forum post, pointed out:

“Probably the biggest problem with this is the fights that it has caused. My hubs really likes high end finishes and they are expensive! I often have to talk him down to a more mid-range product, and sometimes this does not go over well.”

If this is a concern for you as well, have an honest conversation about what is expected from both of you, along with must-haves. Going into the renovation with this conversation in the back of your mind will help both of you keep your cool during the stressful times.

Is It Time to Start Renovating?

Don’t knock down the first wall or rip off the first strip of wallpaper until you’ve planned, including time of year and length and breadth of project. Don’t forget to nail down all the details before starting as well, like the finishes and flooring you’re going to use. Ultimately, however, if you can get little help from cleaning services and keep a relaxed mindset, you’ll make it through with a new home for your baby to grow up in.

Best Pregnancy Apps You Might Not Know About

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

When it comes to the best pregnancy apps, there are lots to choose from.  You can look at the growth and development of your baby or there are also fun personalized text and graphic apps (we love Little Nugget Co.) At Gugu Guru, we are all about product discovery and that includes fun and/or helpful pregnancy apps too! We recently discovered two apps that pregnant mamas should definitely check out that are topping our current list of best pregnancy apps that you might have missed.

BabyFlix
BabyFlix is your all-in-one image management platform all things baby. Your imagery is sent to you right from your ultrasound exam, broadcast live or uploaded directly from your ultrasound DVD. In addition, you can add imagery from your desktop or mobile device and edit the imagery together in an easy to use interface. The Babyflix app’s baby related themes and music will make these memories all the more special. Whether from the web, mobile device or from the TV, a user’s imagery can be enjoyed and memories can be shared. Share directly from the site or post to one of your favorite social networking sites.

best pregnancy apps

Hello Belly
Hello Belly calls itself “the cutest and funniest pregnancy guide for future moms and dads.” With this app, you can get professional tips every week of your pregnancy; tips about your health, how your baby is developing, how to get over all those pregnancy challenges. There’s no heavy medical information here — only useful practical tips in a cozy & fun format.  Some of our favorite content includes prenatal video course made with professional yoga experts and 3D visualizations of the womb with informative explanations. Note: From reviews in the app store, it looks like there are a few places that this app needs to improve. For example, you can’t change your due date and it seems that there is some confusion as to how to proceed without paying (we didn’t have this issue at Gugu Guru) but the team at Hello Belly seems very responsive and actively working on the fixes.

Hospital Bag Checklist: 5 Must-Haves You Might Forget

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Looking for a hospital bag checklist? If you’ve been on Pinterest lately, you’ve probably seen a thousand hospital bag checklist printables and pins. Truth is that a LOT of things parents bring to the hospital are a matter of opinion and personal preference but when it comes to the hospital bag checklist must-haves, Gugu Guru turns to Nikki Gill AKA The Mommy Pro for her guidance. Why? Nikki is not only a professional maternity consultant and founder of The Cradle & All Baby Concierge, she is a registered nurse who has extensive perinatal experience.

Hospital Bag Checklist Item #1: Birth Plan
If you have a birth plan make sure that you bring a copy of it just to make sure everyone is on the same page and knows exactly what you want. Keep in mind that sometimes deliveries do not go as planned especially in emergent situations and your birth plan may not be followed. (Need a birth plan but don’t know where to start? Our experts can help with our Labor and Delivery Prep Workshop.)

Hospital Bag Checklist Item #2: Going Home Outfit for Mom and Baby
Hospitals provide gowns for mommy and clothes for baby during the hospital stay. However, you do want to make sure that both of you have something of your own to go home in. (Pssst: Gugu Guru loves Monica + Andy for take me home outfits!)

Hospital Bag Checklist Item #3: Car Seat
This item of course can not fit in a bag however it’s essential for you to take baby home. Before baby is able to leave the hospital, a car seat test is performed just to make sure that baby will be able to tolerate being in a car seat. If possible have a Certified Car Seat Technician (like Tot Squad) in your area teach you the correct way to install a car seat.

Hospital Bag Checklist Item #4: ID & Insurance Card
Prior to admission you will have to be registered in the hospital system. At a time like this you definitely do not want anything to hold up the process. Making sure that you have your identification card and insurance will help the process go smoothly.

Hospital Bag Checklist Item #5: Phone and Charger
Being able to communicate with your loved ones near and far will probably be a priority for you. Make sure that you have your cellphone and a charger so that you can keep in constant communication with your loved ones.

Maternity Pajamas for Pregnancy & Beyond

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

When it comes to pregnancy and postpartum style must-haves, maternity pajamas are an essential staple to your wardrobe. While it may seem like you can squeeze yourself into your pre-pregnancy pajamas for nine months, investing in a fantastic (and stylish) pair of maternity pajamas will make the journey of pregnancy through the “fourth trimester” so much more comfortable. Gugu Guru highly recommends Belabumbum’s Lounge Chic  Nursing Cami, Pant + Robe Set that can be worn for maternity, postpartum, and is nursing-friendly, as well. You’re going to want to bring your maternity pajamas to the hospital to deliver the baby, and if the pieces are breastfeeding friendly and comfy, it’s a win-win. (Plus you can grab some mommy and me selfies in the hospital, with their adorable sets.)

Belabumbum’s Lounge Chic  Nursing Cami, Pant + Robe Set is made with super-soft jersey and features piping and lace trim details. The Cami includes a built-in bra for support and one-handed clip for easy nursing access. The Cami is hip-length, giving you all the security and comfort you may need, and the curved hem adds a flattering detail to the maternity pajamas.

Maternity Pajamas The Robe overlaps in the front for coverage during and after pregnancy. If you’re looking for maternity pajamas that will transition into post-partum fashion, the robe is an essential staple, as you can comfortably wear it around the house, has easy access for breastfeeding, and will help keep you comfortable when those post-partum hormones cause lots of temperature changes.  The Belabumbum Lounge Chic pants feature a flat, non-roll elastic in the waist band, which is ideal for c-section mamas; they are full length pants with a lovely piping detail.

It is essential to have a pair of maternity pajamas that make you feel like you! Since you will be spending a lot of time at home when the baby is born, it is important for your maternity pajamas to be chic, soft, and super stretchy for your sensitive post-partum body. Belabumbum is ethically-sourced so you can feel good about your purchase too. The Lounge Chic collection is available in two colors, Chambray and Black, and includes a Maternity + Nursing Nightie + Robe Set. Use code GuguGuru for 15% off and free shipping!

Check out some of our other favorite must have maternity pajama essentials from Belabumbum:

Making Strides with Cord Blood Banking

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Hey everyone – it’s Monica, founder of Gugu Guru. I am here on the blog to talk about cord blood banking. First, I want to call out the elephant in the room: we realize that nobody wants to think about anything less than a best case scenario when it comes to a child. Whether it’s pregnancy, delivery or infancy – the last thing that an expectant or new parent needs is to ruminate on the what if’s in life that will likely never happen.  However, at Gugu Guru we do feel it’s our responsibility to inform our community of what’s out there, as well as some of the incredible things being done in the fields of science and medicine to treat or even prevent some of those what if’s that keep us up at night.

In our last post, we covered some common FAQs of cord blood banking including the benefits and the risks. In today’s post, we want to talk about some of the innovations and great strides being made by the medical community through clinical trials.

Did you know that cord blood banking clinical trials are helping to find treatments for diseases and developmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder and cerebral palsy? Scientists, researchers and medical professionals are using the stem cells found in cord blood in studies to see how intravenous infusions might be able to stimulate neuron growth and repair. In lay terms, this means that participants in the study are injected with stem cells and then monitored to see if and how the stem cells are affecting symptoms and if there are improvements.

While these clinical trials are still ongoing and not yet conclusive, imagine the possibility of stem cells being able to treat, improve or eradicate diseases or developmental disorders.

So what does this mean for you? Well, for most parents – especially science geeks – this is just a really cool “nice to know.” However, if you are an expectant parent or a parent with a child that has been diagnosed with autism or cerebral palsy, LifebankUSA Medical Affairs can provide additional information regarding ongoing and planned clinical trials that may benefit you.

Additionally, if you have a child, or know someone who has a child with cerebral palsy or autism and are expecting again, LifebankUSA may be able to offer you a unique opportunity to participate in their family in need program. Certain qualifying conditions apply.

If you’d like to learn more, please fill out the form below and a representative from LifeBankUSA will be in touch.

Best Holiday Gifts for Pregnant or New Moms

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Struggling with what holiday gifts to get for the pregnant or new mom in your life? We asked our amazing baby planners and the Gugu Guru team for their picks of the ultimate holiday gifts for a new or pregnant mama – which of  these holiday gifts would you love to get?

Latina Baxter of Marley & Moo Maternity, Texas: Prenatal Massage Package – Gift your wife, friend, or sister with holiday gifts that will help not only her but also the wellness of the baby.  Prenatal massages are know reduce back and joint pain, improve circulation reduce edema, reduce muscle tension and headaches, reduce stress and anxiety and improve oxygenation of soft tissues and muscles.  When momma feels good so does baby!  Gift her and her little bundle a gift they will truly cherish.

Lindsay Neely, Maternity Consultant and Project Coordinator for YMS, Greenville, SC: An Amazon Prime membership if she doesn’t have one already,  because it just makes life so much easier to order things with one click! Plus, ALL the muslin swaddle blankets and this is my favorite because it’s a touch bigger than the usual ones, and for the cooler months the flannel one. Hint: you can use swaddles to wrap your holiday gifts too!

Ginny Lawler, Maternity Consultant from Your Milk Shoppe, Atlanta, GA: For pregnant or new moms, the ultimate holiday gifts should focus on acts of self-care. Whether you are anxiously awaiting your new arrival, or celebrating your first holiday with your new baby, this is also a time to do something for yourself. My top picks this holiday season would be: 1. A massage, pre or post-natal. Give yourself an hour of quiet time to refresh and rejuvenate.  2. A super soft and warm robe to keep you comfortable and warm during feedings or uncomfortable pregnancy nights. 3. Hiring a cleaning company, even just for 1 hour of cleaning. The holidays are exhausting without a new baby, give yourself this gift of checking one thing off of your list without exhausting yourself even more.

Lauren Daylami, Maternity Consultant from Your Milk Shoppe, Charleston, SC: For pregnant moms I would gift the Snoogle Pregnancy Pillow. As all pregnant moms know, a restful night’s sleep is non-existent the last few months of pregnancy and this pillow is a lifesaver! It conforms to your body and offers tummy support to make you much more comfortable. It even comes with a travel bag too. For new moms I would give the Bitty Bundle of Joy Frida Baby Set that includes all the necessities a newborn baby and beyond would need including: nail clippers, the NoseFrida (which is amazing), and the Windi Gas passer tubes.

From the Gugu Guru Team:

Monica Banks, Gugu Guru’s founder: The Domino’s Newborn Lockdown Package is one of my new favorite holiday gifts for a new mom (and dad!). Who doesn’t want dinner delivered after a long day of caring for baby? Cheesy goodness in front of the TV with your partner sounds like a date to us!

Check out more gift ideas from the Domino’s Baby Registry, too!

Olivia Howell, Gugu Guru’s Editor in Chief: The best gift I ever got as a new mom was my camera! Yes, all phones have cameras now, but I use my Canon DSLR all the time – the automatic setting is amazing and I can just point and click to get professional looking photos of my sons. If you’re going to give big this holiday season to a new or pregnant mom, I highly recommend the Canon Rebel T6i.

Alexa Rubin, Gugu Guru Business Development: The gift I always give to new or expecting moms is super soft pajamas! Since you’re in PJs most of the day with a newborn, you want to not only feel comfy, but look a little put-together, too. I love these Karen Neuburger pajamas, because they’re easy to breastfeed in and comfy and chic.

Shana Smith, Gugu Guru’s Marketing Director: Definitley a gift card for postpartum doula services! Postpartum doulas are such a gift to new moms, so why not help your sister or friend help pay for one? Self-care for the win!

DIY Maternity Refashion with See Kate Sew

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

See Kate Sew partners with Gugu Guru once again to share a fantastic DIY tutorial. This time? A DIY maternity refashion tutorial. Want to check out more DIY projects from Kate? Click over to see this list!

DIY Maternity RefashionI am so excited to share this DIY maternity refashion tutorial. If you’ve wanted to try sewing for yourself, the maternity months are a great time to try it! Not only will you find yourself needing new clothing, no one will notice crooked sewing lines with a cute belly to focus on! Making your own maternity clothes is simple when you start from existing garments!

DIY Maternity Refashion and TWELVElittle

We partnered with TWELVElittle for this DIY maternity refashion post, this is my second TWELVElittle bag and I love it. I wanted a diaper bag that was a bit high fashion and this leopard print does it for me! It’s a perfect pop of pattern for an otherwise basic outfit and has all the nooks and crannies you need for mom life!

This sweatshirt refashion is pretty quick and I love the result – a dropped sleeve tunic with extra long sleeves and ruffles that look like bells! I started with a size 3X mens sweatshirt (and a second one for extra fabric!). You can find them at the thrift store or a cheap rack at Walmart. Pair it with maternity leggings and you’ll be set and cozy for all 9 months!

It’s just right to hug your belly and also perfect for loose postpartum wear during the new baby stage.

Let’s get sewing!

Materials//

-2 Oversized Sweatshirts

-Coordinating thread

–bell ruffle pattern

Instructions//

First up, cut off those sleeves! Follow the armhole seams and just cut the whole sleeve off. Do the same with the waistband.

DIY Maternity Refashion tutorial

Try on your sweatshirt and pinch under the arm where you want the sleeve to stop. Trying it on will insure that your sleeve isn’t too tight when eyeballing it. Stick a pin where you want to sew and take off the sweatshirt. Cut from the armhole down the side seam, taking in just a few inches under the arm and an inch or two on the sides. Taper to the bottom of the sweatshirt. You want to keep some fullness to allow belly space, but also contour it so you don’t look like you’re wearing oversized clothing.

Use the second sweatshirt’s sleeve to cut out the bell ruffle. Use the top of the sleeve crease as your fold.

Use the other sleeve for a second ruffle. Sew the raw edges together using a baste stitch, 1/2″ from the raw edges. Repeat 1/4″ from raw edges so you have two lines of basting stitches.

Open up the sweatshirt over the shoulder seam and flatter out on a table. Pull the baste stitches on the ruffle until they match up with the shoulder edge. Pin the ruffle to the shoulder on the right side with raw edges together. Baste to keep in place.

Turn what you have of the sleeve inside out. Trim from 1/2″ above the cuff up to the top of the sleeve. You want the top edge of the sleeve to match up with the shoulder edge since they are going together!

Sandwich the top of the sleeve over the ruffle and sew it on. The right side will be DOWN.

To finish the top, we just need to sew the side seams and then attach the waistband.

Lay the sweatshirt wrong sides out and match up the side seams. Sew from hem to cuff. Turn right side out.

Trim cuff so it isn’t as wide and sew the short edges together. Wrap waistband around the bottom hem with raw edges matching. Sew and press.

Done!
