What’s New on Gugu: March 20, 2019

by Abby Ludwig Leave a Comment

This week I’m focusing on brands that I adore. Some of these products are new to market while others are new for the season. For loads of our other favorites, please check out our Explore page! (Also, these opinions are 100% my own and I have not received any products in exchange for placement in What’s New on Gugu!)

Joeyband: Immediately after giving birth, you will be encouraged to have skin-to-skin time as much as possible. While this is so beneficial to both parents and baby, the Joeyband makes it even more convenient! Perfect for in-hospital use, the Joeyband will help parents manage this bonding period while preventing infant falls. Also exceptional for use after a C-Section to allow healing mothers to easily keep baby close during recovery.

Babo Botanicals: Having two boys with severe eczema, I have tried pretty much every fragrance-free product on the market. Babo Botanicals offers an extremely wide range of skin care options for my kids. From sunscreen to diaper cream, cleansing wipes to shampoo, they have a natural product for every member of your family!

Copper Pearl Spring Patterns: Copper Pearl does it again with yet another round of adorable burp cloths and bibdanas. Giving us adorable Spring vibes, new patterns – Sassy, Holly, Morgan, Alta (and others!) are a perfect warm weather addition to any family’s garden. Plus they hold up well after multiple washes and act as the perfect accessory to any outfit!

Kindred Bravely Louisa Leggings: While most of Kindred Bravely’s product line is at the top of our favorites, we hadn’t seen their leggings in person until a few weeks ago. We were blown away! They are stretchy, comfortable, and extremely high-quality. Plus, they are a thick enough material and won’t thin out like so many other maternity/postpartum leggings. A true must have for your maternity wardrobe!

Skip Hop Play to Night Expanding Travel Crib: An excellent solution to traveling with your little one! We love this new travel crib from Skip Hop, which starts as a cozy sleep environment and expands to a much larger play space for baby or toddler. Equipped with a travel bag, this is the perfect item to take with while visiting family or friends!

Best Prenatal Vitamins: Ritual’s Essential

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Hey, Everyone – it’s Monica here, founder of Gugu Guru.  I know what you’re thinking, “Best prenatal vitamins? Aren’t all vitamins the same?” Quite simply, the answer is no, absolutely not. Today I want to share a vitamin company that you may have heard of already. It’s called Ritual and the brand just launched its new prenatal vitamin. At Gugu Guru, we think these are the best prenatal vitamins available today and the best multi-vitamins for women. Period.

best prenatal vitamins

If you take a vitamin every day, like 50% of Americans do, whether you’re pregnant or not, you need to check out Ritual. Like now. So what’s the hype? I was seriously blown away when I watched the video on why Katerina Schneider set out to create a better vitamin.  When she was four months pregnant, Katerina turned her house upside down to get rid of products with ingredients that she couldn’t stand behind from her laundry detergent to her deodorant.  However, she had a hard time figuring out what was in her daily multivitamin.  Then when she dug a little deeper, what she found was profoundly disturbing in terms of all the – for lack of a better word – crap that are in the average vitamin. Newsflash: some of these ingredients aren’t just crap – they’re actually potentially harmful.

So Ritual was launched and the brand is committed to creating the purest, most effective vitamin formulations, and sharing every ingredient, source & scientist that makes its vitamin a reality.

best prenatal vitamins

Gugu Guru believes the Essential Prenatal formula are the best prenatal vitamins because they contain all of the essential nutrients for mom that support energy, mood, and even her fertility, for a healthy pregnancy from conception to delivery, as well as all of the essential nutrients for baby that fuel health-vital development, including baby’s brain, vision, immunity, and metabolism. These include:

  • Folate – Helps prevent neural tube defects (which develop in the first 28 days). Our bodies can’t store folate and our need is almost doubled during pregnancy, so it’s important to take it early and consistently.
  • Iron – Maintains healthy blood cell levels for oxygen delivery and energy support.
  • Omega-3 – Sourced from DHA, omega-3s affect mood and support on-time, healthy babies.
  • Iodine – Crucial to producing thyroid hormone, which helps baby’s brain development. We need 50% more iodine during pregnancy, and our bodies don’t store it outside the thyroid.
  • Choline – Newly classified as an essential nutrient for infant brain development.
  • Vitamin D3 – Influences healthy birth weight. Plus, the more vitamin D mom has during pregnancy, the better her mood, which may help prevent postpartum depression.
  • Biotin – Helps the body convert food into energy. Up to 50% of women may get less of this vitamin than they need during pregnancy.
  • Vitamin E – protects cellular structure, helping to protect against free radicals and oxidation.
  • Vitamin K – Supports bone and blood vessel health.
  • Vitamin B12 – Supports blood cell production and brain health.
  • Magnesium – Balances calcium, while supporting healthy mood and cardiovascular health.
  • Boron – Works with calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D3 to support their functions.

Essential Prenatal utilizes a proprietary delayed-release nested capsule technology to combine these essential nutrients in their most easily absorptive forms. The innovative delayed release capsule bypasses the stomach and releases its contents evenly in the small intestine, for better absorption and reduced nausea.

best prenatal vitamins

Another reason why we think these are the best prenatal vitamins? While most prenatals require women to take 5-7 large, often nauseating pills to satisfy all their nutrient needs, Essential Prenatal’s two, small, once-daily capsules offer a more pleasant experience. Essential Prenatal also contains a natural, lemon-essenced tab since citrus is commonly craved in pregnancy.

best prenatal vitamins

Priced at just $35/month, Ritual will provide soon-to-be moms with monthly deliveries of 60 impeccably-engineered, naturally lemon-essenced capsules (two pills per day).

Transitioning Your Maternity Clothing from Summer to Fall with Stowaway Collection

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

When it comes to maternity clothing, it can be hard to find the balance of what to buy – you don’t want to invest too much money in a new wardrobe because you’re only going to need it for a limited amount of time, but you also want to make sure you feel amazing for the time you’ll be wearing the clothing. We always recommend to pregnant mamas to invest in pieces which can be worn multiple seasons and transition from one season to another. One of our favorite brands of maternity wear is Stowaway Collection (we even love the name!) and we wanted to highlight how they suggest transitioning your summer wardrobe over to Fall. PS. Stowaway Collection is having a giant end of season sale starting August 10th until Labor Day!

Stowaway Collection’s maternity dresses are the perfect investment pieces for pregnant women because they transition so easily from one season to the next. This Knock Out Maternity Dress (pictured above) is super cool for summertime with sneakers or flats, and can be easily worn into Fall with a denim jacket, matching scarf and booties. The Uptown Maternity Dress featured in the header image would be perfect for summer date nights with heels and a long necklace, and also look amazing in the Fall with a leather jacket and matching leather boots.

Left: Uptown Maternity Dress; Right: Knock Out Maternity Dress

When it comes to investing in pieces for multiple seasons, you want to keep in mind that they should be neutral colors, a fabric which isn’t too thin or thick, and short sleeves or tank tops are ideal, because you can easily throw on a jacket or cardigan as the weather gets cooler. All of the Stowaway Collection dresses would be super cute with flip-flops, heels, booties, or high boots, and their modern style lends way for pairing with both a chunky cardigan or a super hip leather jacket. Stowaway Collection also has maternity tops, maternity bottoms, date night looks, and tips on how to transition your maternity clothing postpartum.

Maternity Pajamas for Pregnancy & Beyond

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

When it comes to pregnancy and postpartum style must-haves, maternity pajamas are an essential staple to your wardrobe. While it may seem like you can squeeze yourself into your pre-pregnancy pajamas for nine months, investing in a fantastic (and stylish) pair of maternity pajamas will make the journey of pregnancy through the “fourth trimester” so much more comfortable. Gugu Guru highly recommends Belabumbum’s Lounge Chic  Nursing Cami, Pant + Robe Set that can be worn for maternity, postpartum, and is nursing-friendly, as well. You’re going to want to bring your maternity pajamas to the hospital to deliver the baby, and if the pieces are breastfeeding friendly and comfy, it’s a win-win. (Plus you can grab some mommy and me selfies in the hospital, with their adorable sets.)

Belabumbum’s Lounge Chic  Nursing Cami, Pant + Robe Set is made with super-soft jersey and features piping and lace trim details. The Cami includes a built-in bra for support and one-handed clip for easy nursing access. The Cami is hip-length, giving you all the security and comfort you may need, and the curved hem adds a flattering detail to the maternity pajamas.

Maternity Pajamas The Robe overlaps in the front for coverage during and after pregnancy. If you’re looking for maternity pajamas that will transition into post-partum fashion, the robe is an essential staple, as you can comfortably wear it around the house, has easy access for breastfeeding, and will help keep you comfortable when those post-partum hormones cause lots of temperature changes.  The Belabumbum Lounge Chic pants feature a flat, non-roll elastic in the waist band, which is ideal for c-section mamas; they are full length pants with a lovely piping detail.

It is essential to have a pair of maternity pajamas that make you feel like you! Since you will be spending a lot of time at home when the baby is born, it is important for your maternity pajamas to be chic, soft, and super stretchy for your sensitive post-partum body. Belabumbum is ethically-sourced so you can feel good about your purchase too. The Lounge Chic collection is available in two colors, Chambray and Black, and includes a Maternity + Nursing Nightie + Robe Set. Use code GuguGuru for 15% off and free shipping!

Check out some of our other favorite must have maternity pajama essentials from Belabumbum:

Maternity Bra Calendar from Cake Maternity

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Are you wondering how and when to choose maternity and nursing bra? This maternity bra calendar from Cake Maternity can help.

The Right Fit

The easiest way to get the correct bra size is to have it fitted professionally. However sometimes it’s hard to find a specialty store near you, or you might not have time when pregnant or right after giving birth. Cake Lingerie – a leading designer and specialist of maternity and nursing bras is here to help and guide you.

For almost 10 years now, the Cake team have been closely engaged with lactation consultants and industry specialists, listened to pre and post natal women, analyzed the most common problems and changes in their bodies they are undergoing, month after month. With all this information in place, Cake has acknowledged and segmented pregnancy and post natal timeframes into 5 main stages:

• Stage 1 – Pregnancy
1-3 Months – women experience sudden breast growth/tightness. These changes in the bust can be 1-2 sizes. Breast fluctuation is one of the first symptoms most women experience in the first few weeks of pregnancy. This is the time when pre-pregnancy bras start feeling uncomfortable and irritating. For this stage, Cake suggests one of the Candy family of seamless maternity and nursing bras, that are luxuriously comfortable, stylish and allow breast growth without restriction. These same styles are also ideal immediately post birth – Stage 4.

• Stage 2 – Pregnancy
3-8 Months – a little more gradual breast growth occurs, but it is usually pretty stable. During this period, the most amount of expansion occurs around the ribcage. One of the unique features of Cake bras to others is the extended 5-6 Hook and Eyes bra closure. This helps to accommodate expansion of the ribcage and allows for extra adjustability to tighten as the rib cage retracts after the birth. Just remember: “Tight isn’t right!” Plus, adding an extender to the traditional bra as a fix is really just a compromise to support, comfort and the overall look under the clothing.

Traditionally women choose Croissant or Waffle flexible wire bras at this stage, that has a similar feel to a pre-pregnancy bra, but provides ribcage adjustability and is designed to accommodate breast growth.

• Stage 3 – Pregnancy
8-9 Months – this is where the bust will grow in readiness for the arrival of the milk. The last growth of the baby and ribcage expansion can sometimes be quite painful. Whilst purchasing bra at this stage, it’s worth having Stage 4 in mind. The bra should accommodate the breast size increase/ fullness in 2-3 sizes. This is the best time to think about what bras to take to hospital.

The multi Award winning Cotton Candy (for B-F cups) or patent pending Sugar Candy (for G-L cups) seamless bras are chosen by many women at this stage. Our customers feel these bras are ‘Must Haves’ for those first few months and usually women purchase 2-3 of them.

• Stage 4 – Post Birth
0-4 weeks – Milk comes in – lots of breast growth, average 2 – 3 cup sizes. The ribcage will slowly start go back to pre-pregnancy. It’s recommended not to wear wire bra after giving birth until about 4 weeks post, as breast fluctuates the most during this period.

Whilst you can continue to wear Candy family bras, at this stage women often start looking for cup sized bra for going out and meeting other moms, therefore Tea and Mousse are top picks of many at this stage. With reinforced lower cup these bras are well constructed to lift, support and most importantly, have sufficient Top Cup Stretch to avoid restriction or cut in.

• Stage 5 – Post Birth
+4 weeks – Cup size usually reverts to approx size of when 8 months pregnant. Most women do not fully go back to their pre-pregnancy rib expansion until about 4 months after baby. When searching for a bra at this stage, women have an absolute freedom to choose any Flexi wire or Wire free nursing bra to meet her needs.

Many would go back to the exercising at this stage and chose Cake fashionable and functional Zest High Impact Sports Nursing bra or Lotus Pumping and Yoga Bra to accommodate their lifestyle.

Besides the key points mentioned, few other things to take into consideration when looking for maternity and nursing bra are:

  • Wider wire “smile” so not to constrict and damage breast tissue – wire should sit below and completely around the breast tissue
  • Nickel free hooks and sliders to prevent skin allergies and irritation
  • Easy drop down cups for breastfeeding
  • Cotton A-Frame or Inner Sling – provides added support, security and coverage for modesty

Cake Lingerie designs and develops maternity and breastfeeding bras with a woman’s body and its changes during each stage in mind. With the one of the largest assortments of fashion and basic styles in a wide range of sizes, they have got you covered from the time you conceive until you’re ready to stop breastfeeding. Quite often though, women find Cake bras so well constructed and comfortable, they just continue to wear them. It is also worth investing in good premium quality maternity and nursing bra, which are durable and made from ecological fabrics. This period in your life is when you bust will go through the most change. You need and deserve a well-made bra that will not only protect but provide you with maximum benefit.

Every woman and every pregnancy is unique hence if you are uncertain or need help with your fitting, check for a Cake stockist store near you at Cake Store Locator or ask the Cake Customer Support Team for advice.

ABOUT CAKE LINGERIE / Cake Lingerie is pioneering the future of highly constructed and beautifully designed, Maternity and Nursing Bras. Cake Lingerie is accredited for creating a brand for women, focused on luxurious quality and fit perfection.

DIY Maternity Refashion with See Kate Sew

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

See Kate Sew partners with Gugu Guru once again to share a fantastic DIY tutorial. This time? A DIY maternity refashion tutorial. Want to check out more DIY projects from Kate? Click over to see this list!

DIY Maternity RefashionI am so excited to share this DIY maternity refashion tutorial. If you’ve wanted to try sewing for yourself, the maternity months are a great time to try it! Not only will you find yourself needing new clothing, no one will notice crooked sewing lines with a cute belly to focus on! Making your own maternity clothes is simple when you start from existing garments!

DIY Maternity Refashion and TWELVElittle

We partnered with TWELVElittle for this DIY maternity refashion post, this is my second TWELVElittle bag and I love it. I wanted a diaper bag that was a bit high fashion and this leopard print does it for me! It’s a perfect pop of pattern for an otherwise basic outfit and has all the nooks and crannies you need for mom life!

This sweatshirt refashion is pretty quick and I love the result – a dropped sleeve tunic with extra long sleeves and ruffles that look like bells! I started with a size 3X mens sweatshirt (and a second one for extra fabric!). You can find them at the thrift store or a cheap rack at Walmart. Pair it with maternity leggings and you’ll be set and cozy for all 9 months!

It’s just right to hug your belly and also perfect for loose postpartum wear during the new baby stage.

Let’s get sewing!

Materials//

-2 Oversized Sweatshirts

-Coordinating thread

–bell ruffle pattern

Instructions//

First up, cut off those sleeves! Follow the armhole seams and just cut the whole sleeve off. Do the same with the waistband.

DIY Maternity Refashion tutorial

Try on your sweatshirt and pinch under the arm where you want the sleeve to stop. Trying it on will insure that your sleeve isn’t too tight when eyeballing it. Stick a pin where you want to sew and take off the sweatshirt. Cut from the armhole down the side seam, taking in just a few inches under the arm and an inch or two on the sides. Taper to the bottom of the sweatshirt. You want to keep some fullness to allow belly space, but also contour it so you don’t look like you’re wearing oversized clothing.

Use the second sweatshirt’s sleeve to cut out the bell ruffle. Use the top of the sleeve crease as your fold.

Use the other sleeve for a second ruffle. Sew the raw edges together using a baste stitch, 1/2″ from the raw edges. Repeat 1/4″ from raw edges so you have two lines of basting stitches.

Open up the sweatshirt over the shoulder seam and flatter out on a table. Pull the baste stitches on the ruffle until they match up with the shoulder edge. Pin the ruffle to the shoulder on the right side with raw edges together. Baste to keep in place.

Turn what you have of the sleeve inside out. Trim from 1/2″ above the cuff up to the top of the sleeve. You want the top edge of the sleeve to match up with the shoulder edge since they are going together!

Sandwich the top of the sleeve over the ruffle and sew it on. The right side will be DOWN.

To finish the top, we just need to sew the side seams and then attach the waistband.

Lay the sweatshirt wrong sides out and match up the side seams. Sew from hem to cuff. Turn right side out.

Trim cuff so it isn’t as wide and sew the short edges together. Wrap waistband around the bottom hem with raw edges matching. Sew and press.

Done!

Maternity Jeans for Every Budget

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

When it comes to dressing your bump, a good pair of maternity jeans is key! Our editor polled one of her online mama groups and asked what their favorite maternity jeans were – for every budget! Here’s the top two picks for every different wallet size.

Budget-Friendly Maternity Jeans:

Left: Maternity Crossover Panel® Bootcut Jeans – Isabel Maternity, $25 – Hands down, when it comes to affordable maternity wear, Target is the lowest price. While H+M and Old Navy were also super popular, their maternity jeans were actually higher priced than any of Target’s options. These cute jeans have a little straight-leg to them, for the mamas who don’t love the super skinny look.

Right: Maternity Crossover Panel® Jeggings – Isabel Maternity, $25 – many moms we talked to sang the praises of jeggings for pregnancy! These Target jeggings with a full belly panel look chic and comfy.

Mid-Price Range Maternity Jeans:

Left: Motherhood Secret Fit Belly Stitched Pocket Boot Cut Maternity Jeans, $50 – these were our editor’s favorite jeans for pregnancy; she wore them throughout both pregnancies, and her husband even said they looked better on her than her non-maternity jeans!

Right: Three Seasons Maternity Women’s Maternity Bootcut Denim with Neutral Belly Band, $40 – The Three Seasons brand keep coming up in the group as a go-to brand for maternity; one mama said, “I bought and wore these for almost 2 years with back-to-back pregnancies and they still look new!!!“

High-Priced Maternity Jeans:

Left: Ag Jeans Secret Fit Belly Maternity Jeans, $200 – $300 – these came up time and again from the mamas, at a higher price range, they surely aren’t for every budget, but as one mama said, “pricey, but three pairs lasted me through two (and counting) pregnancies without stretching, losing shape or fading.”

Right: Joe’s Secret Fit Belly Skinny Leg Maternity Jeans. $200 – $250 – another popular maternity jean in the higher price range, a mama fan of Joe’s says, “I’ve always found Joe’s denim to be soft, extremely comfortable, and have a good amount of stretch, which worked out fantastically well for a growing belly. I’m a big comfort person but I also love fashion and designers so the two lined up nicely as well. I remember trying on other maternity designer jeans and those not fitting as well or as comfortable as Joe’s.”

Maternity Style: Urban Boho Mama

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

We’re sharing our favorite maternity looks for mama style; today’s look is the Urban Boho Mama! What does that mean, exactly? The term boho comes from bohemian which refers to the retro hippie style like you’d have seen on dreamers, activists, and artists from the beat generation. However, the urban boho look refers to a little more of a polished twist on the boho look – still comfortable with lots of flowers and flow, just a little more cleaned up and streamlined. The urban boho trend is super popular all across the country right now, so we rounded up some style ideas for maternity looks.

1. Navy Paisley Tie Front Maternity Maxi Dress; 2. Peach Floral Off Shoulder Maternity Maxi Dress; 3. Grey Floral Off Shoulder Maternity Maxi Dress; 4. Heather Grey Off Shoulder Ruffle Trim Maternity Maxi Dress; 5. Teal Floral Chiffon Long Sleeve V-Neck Maternity Maxi Dress; 6. Light Blue Rose Off Shoulder Maternity Maxi Dress

When it comes to shoes, you’re going to want something cute (duh), but also without straps, laces, or ties, as it’s pretty hard to bend over and see your own feet when you’re super pregnant. We love these urban boho shoes because they’re sturdy, beautiful, and neutral colors.

1. Brown Faux Leather Cutout Overlay Boot; 2. Olive Strapped Ankle Boot; 3. Black Faux Leather Cutout Bootie; 4. Black Solid Faux Suede Boots

1. Babymel Grace Faux Leather Satchel Diaper Bag, Tan; 2. Arrows Weekender Bag by White Elm – Large Diaper Tote (budget find!); 3. KF Baby Bohemian Diaper Bag Value Set (budget find!); 4. timi & leslie Charlie 7-Piece Diaper Bag Set
