Celebration of Feeding: Feeding Twins with Twiniversity and BabyBjorn

by Gugu Guru 2 Comments

For today’s Celebration of Feeding post, Natalie Diaz, the founder of Twiniversity, is here to share her tips for feeding twins!

There are MANY options when it comes to feeding your twins. This week we are celebrating formula feeding and in my expert opinion, bottle feeding in bouncers is the best way to go. The BabyBjörn Bouncer Balance Soft is incredible. Not only will your baby be comfortable, but it can hold him/her until their 2nd birthday! My only problem with this bouncer is that they don’t make one I can buy in my size. So let’s get down to business. How are we going to bouncer feed twins?

Here’s how you do it:

Step 1: Set up your situation! Get your “home base” ready to feed those hungry babies. You should have: Full bottles with the correct amount (maybe a little extra for that morning feed!), burp cloths, wipes (for cleaning up small spills) and the remote to turn on some tunes. Hey, why not? Ever go to a restaurant that was silent? Yeah, it was uncomfortable, right? Well, set the mood for fine dining even if it’s just in your living room. Suggestions: Harry Belafonte, REM, Trace Atkins (those were my twins’ favorites!)

Step 2: CHANGE your babies. You should never begin a feed — breast or bottle — without first changing the babies. That way if they are fussy you at least know it’s not because they are wet. Once they are changed, bring them to their bouncers and strap them in safely. SAFETY FIRST, ALWAYS! If they are little and having a hard time with neck support, buy a head positioner, or just use a rolled up receiving blanket behind the neck to help prop them up into place.

Step 3: Go to the bathroom yourself! Same as the babies, no one should be uncomfortable during a feed if you can avoid it.

Step 4: Sit on the floor with your back against a chair or couch, stretch your legs out in front of you, get your supplies within arms’ reach and settle in — you’re going to be here a minute. Once you are all adjusted, place a bouncer on each side of you so that your arms can comfortably reach the babies.

Step 5: Feed those babies! Hold each bottle in one hand and let your hungry babies go to town. Remember to make sure that the nipple is filled 100% of the time with the milk! Our suggestion would be to use the Dr. Brown’s Options bottles. Start off with a level 1 nipple but move to a level 2 nipple once your doctor gives you the green light. If you are doing a combo of breast and bottle feeding, STICK WITH LEVEL 1! That is closest to the actual flow of your nipple and the baby will be most comfortable with that.

Step 6: Halfway through the bottle, stop for a quick burp. I’m sending successful burping vibes your way! Start with the easier burper first and move over to the one that’s a bit more challenging.  Make sure you take advantage of that burp cloth. If you end up getting some formula on your clothing, or theirs, try the Dapple Stain Remover which we find works like a charm to get those stains right out. Then go back to feeding as usual but still make sure that the nipple is full 100%!

When the feed is done, feel free to give ‘em one final burp. Then, PUT YOUR BOTTLES IN THE SINK! Make sure that after each feed you get some fresh water into those bottles. By the days end, even if it’s a ¼ oz, it might be tough to get out. Keep a large basin in the sink prefilled with sudsy water for those bottles to go right into.

Make sure that every night you do a final tally of your bottles. If you used 16 bottles, make sure they are all accounted for in the dishwasher! You don’t want to have a rogue bottle floating around your house. In a few days’ time, if you don’t find it….you will. You can just track the scent! Yuck!

Celebrate Feeding with the Earth’s Best Organic Formula! (+ giveaway!)

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

As parents, we want the best for our babies; whether it’s where they sleep, what they wear, or what they eat – we strive to make sure that we are providing them with the right resources to keep them healthy and help them thrive.

We’re so excited to team up with the Earth’s Best Organic® brand to Celebrate Feeding! We understand how emotional, exciting, and sometimes confusing deciding how to feed your baby can be, especially for first time parents. While it’s generally known that “breast is best,” breastfeeding might not be an option, such as with adoption. Or, some moms need to supplement when they go back to work. For a host of reasons many moms turn to formula. Through celebrating feeding, we want to give formula-feeding moms the help they need cutting through the noise and learning about what best-in-class products are available to them.

We’re here to share some of our favorite feeding products, helpful tips for bottle feeding, travel tips, fun baby and mama feeding style, and more! Each day this week we will be sharing a new post to Celebrate Feeding; we will be providing resources, product recommendations, and many mama lifestyle hacks!

There does not need to be a one-size-fits-all method to feeding your baby. Every baby is different, and even…every baby is different at every stage! Breastfeeding, known for its many healthful benefits, is a wonderfully natural way for your baby to get a boost of immunity from their first feeding onward. Ruth A. Lawrence, M.D., a professor of pediatrics and an OB-GYN states that “the incidences of pneumonia, colds and viruses are reduced among breastfed babies.” Breastmilk is known to be a cure-all for ear infections, pink-eye, and even helps prevent your baby from getting sick! Breastfeeding also has benefits for the mama, such as leading to a lower risk for ovarian and breast cancer, as well as type 2 diabetes.

babies-921037_1920

Formula feeding, especially with an organic formula, also has some wonderful benefits for babies and moms. It’s much easier to document how much a baby formula a baby is drinking, and when mama gets tired of feeding, she can share the responsibility with others – it does take a village! Formula provides all of the vitamins and iron a baby needs in perfectly measured doses, so you never need to worry that they’re not getting the nutrition they need.

Whether you’re breastfeeding or formula feeding, both methods are nutritionally fulfilling for babies, and no matter how you feed your baby, as long as you’re cuddling their sweet little warm body next to yours, they will feel loved and safe.

We are excited for you to join us and Celebrate Feeding with the Earth’s Best Organic® brand this week!

Holiday Gift Idea: UviCube for the Technology Loving Mama

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

We’ve found the perfect holiday gift for all of the high tech and technology-obsessed parents you know! New parents (and seasoned ones) are all about keeping baby healthy and safe, especially during the germ season of Wintertime. Luckily, UviCube, a new essential baby item, is here to keep the things your baby loves totally germ-free! It is the first of its kind in the U.S. market, to dry, store and eliminate 99.9% of bacteria on surfaces exposed to UV light on items such as baby bottles, bottle nipples and pacifiers, but can also sanitize electronics, mobile phones, toys and other items your baby might like to touch or teethe on.

In the past, parents have used sterilizers and dishwashers to keep baby’s bottles free from germs and mold, but what about all of the other things baby may chew on or touch? UviCube uses direct UV light (without moisture or heat) to eliminate 99.9% of harmful bacteria to sanitize bottles, pacifiers, mobile phones, remote controls…if it’s in baby’s mouth or hands, UviCube will keep it clean! UviCube disinfects using low heat infra-red light bulb to dry and ultraviolet light – this means there’s no worry about burning your fingers taking hot bottles out to use – safe for mama and baby.

Not only is UviCube important because it keeps the bottles clean and sanitized, but it helps keep mama’s brain organized, because there won’t be bottles strewn about the counters all the time! You can store the bottles in the UviCube and take when needed, keeping them ready to go at all times. Baby drop a pacifier or toy? Just place it in the UviCube and disinfect. It’s so easy to use and safe for baby, parents, and your house. No more boiling water for bottles, pump parts, and nipples, the UviCube is able to safely disinfect anything you put in it. Baby love to play with your phone, or toddler watches videos? Don’t let germs spread in your house this holiday season – the UviCube is there for your keys, phone, and anything baby touches, play withs, or gnaws on.

This holiday season, UviCube wants you to focus on your family, and less time on cleaning! Instead of spending hours washing pump parts, bottles, and baby gear – throw it in the UviCube and focus on the important things, like your loved ones. If you’re traveling this season, make sure to disinfect everything as soon as you get back home; just place in the UviCube and let the UV light work its magic. The UviCube is an ideal gift, for anyone with kids, as it’s not just a baby product, it’s a family essential, for keeping everyone healthy, happy, and clean, year round.

Single Mom Registry and Self-Care Tips!

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

When a woman is pregnant, it’s often assumed that she has a partner or family that will help her and the baby out. However, when you’re a single mom, that’s not always the case and even family eventually goes home. Gugu Guru rounded up some must-haves to help make life a little (and sometimes a lot) easier for all of you amazing single mamas.

  1. Baby K’Tan
Recovering from a c-section alone? The Baby K’Tan is a lifesaver. Since most doctors/midwives recommend no heavy lifting until after 6 weeks, nestle your little one in her Baby K’Tan to transport her to and from the car. Plus, babywearing can help you get tasks done around the house (not to mention that babywearing is proven to have great emotional and biological benefits for both mom and baby.)
  2. UPPAbaby Cruz
We can’t rave enough about this stroller. It turns on a dime (even when using only one hand), has a huge storage basket at the bottom that is big enough to hold a week’s worth of groceries for a solo mom, and is super easy to maneuver.
  3. PostPartum Doula Services
If you don’t have family or friends who can help out, a postpartum doula can lend the educated, nurturing hand that you need. Whether it’s bathing the baby, giving you tips on helping baby sleep, helping you with your emotional recovery after birth, or light housekeeping and meal prep, a postpartum doula can help make the first few weeks much easier.
  4. DockATot
Chances are you will be juggling a ton of tasks on your own around the house. The DockaTot provides a safe, portable napping spot for your little one anywhere in your home. Better still, it’s an easy way to make bedsharing safer. For a single mom, bedsharing can be a sanity saver. (Please seek your pediatrician’s advice if you have questions or concerns about bedsharing.)
  5. Baby Bjorn Bouncer Balance Soft
This bouncer will become your best friend! It’s lightweight and easily portable, so bring it into the bathroom and baby can bounce himself while you shower. It also grows with the baby (just increase the angle of the seat as baby gets older and add on the toy bar when they’re ready).
  6. Giftcards for Local Grocery Stores that offer Curbside Pickup
Or better still, gift cards to grocery stores or services that deliver groceries to your home. Save yourself the time and (precious) energy of having to shop!
  7. Toaster Oven
You’ll wonder why it took you so long to get one! Consider freezing meals in individual sized disposable pans that you can pop them right into the toaster oven, so you’re not stuck eating the same casserole for 4 days straight. (This also works for individual portions of brownies. And yes, there is nothing like a warm brownie straight from the toaster oven at 2am.)
  8. Veetee Rice
Microwavable rice, you say? Yes! And it’s surprisingly delicious. 11 varieties, 2 minutes in the microwave, 1 happy new mama.

Of course, surviving the early months as a single mom goes far beyond have just the right “things.” Here are some tips on taking care of your emotional health:

Emma Johnson, creator of WealthySingleMommy.com, a website for professional single mothers shared with us that as a new single mom, “it can be easy to compare yourself to all your traditionally married friends, and their Instagram-friendly pics of their nursery, baby room, cute outfits, and all the material goods that marketers push on new mothers. Tip #1: RESIST! Happy, healthy, thriving single mom families do one thing very well: Live within their means. This includes building a life on the budget you have now, building a network of friends, neighbors and family who will support you logistically in terms of child care, sick care, and other emergencies.” Plus, she added how important it is to take care of yourself, mama! For, “Martyr moms are not good moms, and the more you care for your physical health, with fitness, rest and quality food, emotional well being with time spent with positive people who love you and your kids, a romantic life, and give yourself the freedom to build a big career with high income goals. There is no such thing as decisions ‘as a single mom.’ Prioritize an amazing life, and make it work for your family, no matter what that family looks like.”

pregnant-1088240_1920

Psychologist Naomi Bernstein, from NaomiBernstein.com, speaks a lot about using the 5 Love Languages (Receiving gifts, Quality time, Words of affirmation, Acts of service, and Physical touch) as self-care for yourself as a single mama. As she says, “If these displays of affection are necessary for an individual to feel fulfilled in a relationship, the same is true for someone who is single. Knowing your own love language and loving yourself in that way is necessary in order to feel fulfilled. When you do not have a romantic partner to send messages of love and appreciation you have to find other ways to get the message across to yourself. You can provide yourself with any and all of these love languages. It may sound awkward at first but it is possible and necessary, especially as a single mother.”

Check out some of her tips for using the 5 Love Languages as a single mama:

Receiving Gifts – Make an Amazon wish list for yourself and if you’ve had an especially hard day or even just to recognize that you’ve done something worthy of special appreciation, buy yourself something!
Quality Time – Call an old friend for a chat, eat Chex Mix in front of the TV, read a good book, meditate, exercise anything that is all focused on YOU and what you want to do.
Words/thoughts of affirmation – Write down positive thoughts about yourself and read these to yourself daily. Create and write down a list of positive empowering mantras. Make sure you pay attention to all the good you do and take focus off of mistakes or imperfections.
Acts of Service – Ask for help. If you find yourself thinking, “I don’t need help, I can do it on my own” or if asking for help makes you feel weak or incapable, remind yourself that we weren’t meant to do this on our own. We were meant to be surrounded by friends and family to help one another.
Physical Touch – When you’re not in a relationship it can seem hard to provide this for yourself, but you can. Cuddle, hug or hold hands with friends, family and your children. Treat yourself to a massage, facial or mani/pedi!

Sustainable Nursery – Save Vs. Splurge

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Having a baby in the age of environmental guilt is a daunting task. You want to buy all the right things to create the safest, healthiest, and most planet-friendly environment for your newborn. But can you afford it? From the author of Spit That Out! The Overly Informed Parent’s Guide to Raising Healthy Kids in the Age of Environmental Guilt, here is Paige Wolf’s advice on when to splurge and how to save.

13122900_10153766824657933_6215629560069415146_o

Photo from Live Sweet Photography

SPLURGE: Mattress

With the growing knowledge of phthalates, VOCs, and toxic flame retardants in conventional mattresses, new parents are increasingly interested in organic mattresses for their babies and children. After all, babies and young children spend at least half their time in bed! Unfortunately, without proper knowledge, you might find yourself buying a fake organic mattress. Since greenwashing knows no limits –and no government agency regulates the labeling of mattresses as “organic” or “natural” several companies label their mattresses ‘organic’ when they are technically not. Look for certifications by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and GREENGUARD®.

Gugu Recommended: Naturepedic Mattresses

SAVE: Bedding

Organic cotton sheets and pillowcases are more accessible and affordable than ever. Big box stores like Target sell 100% organic cotton bedding for as low as $9.99 for a crib sheet.

Gugu Recommended: Burt’s Bees Organic Crib Sheets

micuna-n-n-nb-pa-2

SPLURGE: Crib

Due to changing safety standards, cribs are often not a safe secondhand bet. New crib safety standards took effect in June 2011 and made most cribs sold before that date technically unsafe. And cheap cribs made from pressed wood products such as particle board, plywood and fiberboard (or MDF) typically contain VOCs as well as formaldehyde in the glues and adhesives used to bond the particles together. Though hard wood is more expensive, it’s usually durable, making it a solid investment (bearing of course crib standards don’t change again!)

Gugu Recommended: Micuna Cribs

SAVE: Bed, Dresser, and Other Furnishings

When it comes to other nursery furnishings, secondhand can be a fantastic way to save money and reduce consumption. Parents are constantly selling – and even giving away – gently used furnishings on CraigsList, local parent message boards, and even Buy Nothing Project Facebook Groups. We got our son’s convertible IKEA twin bed for $20 on Craigslist and a beautifully made wooden bed for our daughter for a steal from a neighborhood group. Just keep an eye out for anything too vintage, which could be a lead paint hazard. If you are unsure, pick up a lead testing kit for about $7.

SPLURGE: Paint

This really isn’t too much of a splurge, because no-VOC (volatile organic compound) paint is now available from most major brands with a minimal premium – especially if you are just doing one room. VOC vapors can continue to leak into the air long after the paint is dry, so it’s not something you want a baby or pregnant woman exposed to.

Gugu Recommended: Lullaby Paints

finn

SAVE: Clothing/Layette

I don’t care how precious that designer onesie is. It will get one-to-two wears at best before it is completely destroyed. In fact, you will be lucky if it lasts an hour. Take advantage of your community and accept all the hand-me-downs you can get. While it may not always be organic, hand-me-down clothing that has been washed several times has less residue from dyes and flame retardants. If you don’t have easy access to hand-me-downs from a close family member, explore online community groups where parents offer up gently used clothing for cheap and even for free!

Gugu Recommended: Finn + Emma

Head down to the bottom of this post for a huge giveaway and special deals including all the products mentioned in this post!

atlas

HelloFresh: Let’s be honest – it is nearly impossible to cook a meal with an infant at home, let alone meal plan, prep, and shop! Luckily, HelloFresh has you covered. HelloFresh provides the opportunity to enjoy healthy home-cooked meals without the hassle. Eliminating the need to plan or shop, HelloFresh delivers delicious and satisfying meals that are easy and fun to make in 30 minutes. The recipes are also reviewed by an in-house dietitian to make sure you’re receiving a well-balanced and nutritious meal. They have many different dietary preferences to choose from and they deliver your HelloFresh box to your doorstep at a time and day of your choosing (Mon-Sat), free of charge. Plus, you can easily manage your account directly from your phone, so you can plan ahead while rocking baby to sleep. Eating healthy meals is essential to staying mentally healthy during the early baby days, so let HelloFresh take care of you, mama!

chatbooks

Chatbooks: When you have a baby, it’s amazing how quickly your phone and social media fills up with adorable photos. However, sometimes it’s nicer to have printed photos of the baby – but, who has time to make a photo book with a crying baby to feed? Chatbooks is your perfect solution. Chatbooks creates soft or hardcover 60-page photo books from your Instagram feed, Facebook timeline, or favorite photos from your phone. They make it so easy for you to create books; if you set up a photo source, like your Instagram feed, they will import photos and print books for you (with free shipping), without you having to do anything at all! You can also create custom books (and create books from specific hashtags you used) using their archival paper and inks – as they say, “hold on to what matters,” because you never know when your phone is going to fall into the toilet. Chatbooks also make a great gift for grandparents because you can duplicate your books and have them shipped nationally.

DateBox: It’s not secret that time with your spouse becomes non-existent when baby comes along; it’s almost impossible to get out of the house, and when you do, you’re tired and ready to turn right back around. Thankfully, DateBox has you covered! DateBox is a monthly delivery of everything you need to make a fun and creative date night in the comfort of your own home. With awesome boxes such as sushi night, camping adventure (s’mores!), painting projects, and more, you and your spouse will love having a new box every month to look forward to. Even if you barely say two words beyond “where’s the baby’s bottle?” for the other 29 days of the month, at least you know with DateBox, you can look forward to one special night a month of just the two of you.

Graze: With a new baby in the house, sometimes you skip a meal and are starving, but can’t find a healthy snack anywhere! We are big fans of Graze boxes, which delivers a box of delicious and healthy snacks once a month. They feature over 100 unique snacks; you simply tell them your flavor and taste preferences and they curate a box for you. Their snacks have no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives – a Graze box subscription is perfect for a breastfeeding mama who needs lots of healthy snacks during feedings!

Panda Plates: One of the more difficult aspects of having a second baby is finding time to feed the older kids! Luckily, Panda Plates has you covered. Panda Plates creates weekly healthy menus of snacks and meals for kids; each week, their team prepares a variety of dinners, lunches and snacks to choose from, including a selection of gluten-free, dairy-free, and meat-free options. Simply choose the meals you want to receive and they’ll prepare and package them up. Your meals are hand-packed and dispatched using a friendly courier service. Each delivery comes safely tucked away in an insulated bag that stays cold until you put in your fridge. Simply remove the food from the container and follow the serving instructions that come with every meal. Some meals can be quickly warmed in the oven, while others are perfect out of the fridge or at room temperature! What a great way to ensure older siblings eat healthy and satisfying meals even with a new baby in the house.

Hi I’m Lindsey of Live Sweet Photography and I’m so excited to be sharing with you a few of my favorite baby products! We adopted our last two babies and I wanted to make sure we got to bond as much as possible with our new little ones. Many of these products really made the bonding process and our daily lives with our new little bundles so much easier. I hope you are able to find some helpful items for your amazing adoption journey!

Solly Baby wraps are my favorite for getting that newborn as close as possible! Since I din’t get to breastfeed Libby or Finn I wanted them as close as possible any time they could be to encourage that bonding. Wearing them in the Solly was wonderful for both me and my husband to bond with them and they loved to sleep curled right up next to us!

The Beaba products are awesome for many different things. I love their formula and snack containers for storing formula for on the go and then when baby is old enough to eat baby food. I have loved their baby food maker so that I can make some of Finn’s food for him. It makes me so happy to know that I can help make his food and that he’s getting something fresh and healthy.

The Baby Brezza Formula Pro has seriously been a life saver for us! Making formula bottles in the middle of the night always stressed me out and I worried I would mix the wrong amounts of things. The baby brezza takes the stress out of night time feedings and day time feedings are a breeze too since I can make a bottle in seconds with just one hand. This is a dream!

The DockATot is a favorite of ours. When Finn was a newborn I loved being able to have him right by us, it was so nice for him to have his own cozy little spot to snuggle, lounge and relax.

Life Factory Bottles are our bottle of choice from infant to toddler. We used these for both Libby and Finn and have loved them. The quality is amazing, they are easy to clean and they both have loved the nipples.

Petunia Pickle Bottom are my favorite diaper bags. There are so many amazing ones out there to choose from one which is so great. Petunia Pickle Bottom have been my favorite though for Finn as they have lots of pockets and enough space for some of the older kids snacks and stuff too and they look like a pretty purse instead of a diaper bag.
A good baby monitor– we found one that you can get an app for on your phone so we can check it anytime, anywhere we have cell reception or wifi. I absolutely love it and love that I can check on the kids when they are sleeping even when I’m not home. (Editor’s note: the Gugu Guru team are big fans of the Wifi Baby monitor!)

We have loved the Puj baby bath for bathing Finn in the kitchen sink. I love bathing him right in the middle of all the evening activities that way the kids can help and we can all spend time together while Finn splashes and enjoys his evening bath!

Softsie footie jammies are so soft and cuddly, they are our favorite jammies for keeping our babes nice and cozy!
