9 Reasons that Walking is Magic for Moms with 99 Walks

by Gugu Guru 1 Comment

Today’s guest post is from our friends at 99 Walks; 99 Walks is a monthly walking challenge that inspires you to get up, get moving and crush your walking goals. They will welcome you into their supportive community, provide inspiration and encouragement, and reward you with your choice of gorgeous, wearable inspiration. We love the idea of 99 Walks being a place new moms can connect with each other, move their body, and feel good about themselves!

walking women

Ever look at one of those moms and wonder how she keeps it all together? I’m talking mascara on the drop off-line and what can only be her pre-baby jeans?

Yeah. Us too. But here’s what we know for sure – no one has it completely together. No one. Because mommin’ is hard and mommin’ can be lonely and we all need to prioritize ourselves at least a little bit. So we’re walking.

Why? Because walking takes no special gear, no special place, no special time and the health benefits are literally amazing. Here are nine of our favorite reasons:

  1. Walking can improve your mood. Many studies have shown a link between walking for exercise and improved mood and lower stress. Walking in nature can amplify these benefits.
  2. Walking can reduce your blood pressure. A study in Korea showed decreased blood pressure when subjects walked 30 minutes a day, five days a week.
  3. Walking will help you lose weight. Walking burns more calories, but it can also help offset genetic tendencies towards obesity. According to a Harvard study, one hour of walking a day can reduce these influences by half.
  4. Walking can help fight cancer. Another Harvard study showed that women who walked just 1 to 3 hours per week reduced their risk of death from breast and uterine cancers by 19%.
  5. Walking is good for your bones. A Nurse’s Health study showed that women who walk 4 hours or more a week saw a 40% reduction in hip fractures.
  6. Walking is good for your heart. Walking 30 minutes a day at a medium pace can reduce a woman’s risk of heart disease by 40% per a Harvard Study.
  7. Walking can help you sleep better. Walking outdoors, especially in the morning, can help your body get in tune with our natural daily rhythms. The activity and daylight can set your internal clock and help you fall asleep faster and sleep better that night.
  8. Walking helps your brain. Walking results in a 50% reduction in the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, according to research from Rush University.
  9. Walking helps you solve problems. Walking calms your nerves and your brain, allowing you to think more creatively and solve problems. Since walking occupies some of your brain, it productively distracts the jumpy part, while allowing the creative part to do its thing. Stuck on a problem? Go for a walk.

But sometimes moms need a little extra motivation to get up, get together, and get going, and that’s why we’ve fallen in love with 99 Walks. Their monthly walking challenges are designed to get moms moving together, and at the end of the month, 99 Walks rewards you with gorgeous, inspirational jewelry. Join the September challenge at 99walks.fit

Baby Humidifier Pick for Your Nursery: Crane Humidifier

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

One of the most often overlooked aspects of a baby’s nursery is the air that they breathe, which is why it’s imperative to add a baby humidifier to your baby registry. The baby humidifier Gugu Guru is always recommending to add to your baby registry is Crane USA’s Drop Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier, as it not only is easy to use, but comes in a huge variety of colors and styles, so you are sure to find one which fits with your home’s aesthetic. A baby humidifier will also help baby sleep better, and actually help keep the air healthy, clean, which helps baby from getting congested and sick. A baby humidifier is an essential necessity for any baby’s nursery for so many reasons!

Baby Humidifier - Crane Drops Variety Image

When it comes to a baby humidifier, the drop humidifier by Crane USA is your ultimate choice, as it does not require a filter and is super easy to clean – meaning you don’t have to remember to buy anything else, just simply clean and you’re good to go. The drop humidifier by Crane USA features an easy to clean 360° mist nozzle, so you can keep the humidifier clean and working properly, which in turn will help baby sleep better. Many parents are concerned about mold and mildew with a baby humidifier, however the drop humidifiers have an anti-microbial base to reduce mold and mildew, so there is no need to worry about mold or mildew in your baby humidifier.

Since it is a baby humidifier, we appreciate that Crane USA’s Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifiers are whisper quiet; they feature whisper quiet voltage, as low as a light bulb. No loud noises or beeps to wake the baby up in the middle of the night. The drop humidifier can run for up to 24 hours and has an auto shut off, so if you’re in a sleep deprived state, it’s just one less thing to worry about.

baby humidifier

But, the real reason a baby humidifier is an essential part of a nursery is that when babies breathe easier, they will sleep easier too! More sleep for baby means more sleep for everyone, right? Baby humidifiers are especially important for newborns because they are Obligate Nasal Breathers, which means they breathe only through their noses for their first 4 – 6 months. Any congestion can make breathing, feeding, and sleeping incredibly difficult for your little one, which is why it is crucial to have a baby humidifier in the nursery, such as Crane USA’s drop humidifier. And, as we always talk about investment, Crane USA’s Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier will grow with your child, as even toddlers and kids need humidifiers! In fact, many pediatricians recommend the use of a humidifier as a safe, non medicated, all natural alternative to help relieve congestion from the common cold and flu instead of potentially harmful over-the-counter cough and cold medicine.

The Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier from Crane USA is a must-have on your baby registry, as it will help baby stay healthy, sleep better, and is super simple to maintain – we think you’re going to want a baby humidifier in every room of the house!

Here’s what our Chief Baby Planner, Julie, has to say about the Crane Humidifier:

Check out this review of the Adorables line along with our real mom review of another Gugu Guru favorite: the Crane Travel Humidifier.

Product Discovery: The Wild Zen Mandalas

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

With the New Year comes a moment of reflection, and with reflection comes the realization, for many moms, that you need a way to meditate and reflect in the moment. When the Gugu Guru team came across The Wild Zen, we knew we wanted to share their mantra and mandalas with you all.

When Jessica Saavedra visited the Grand Canyon at age 13, she fell in love with its majestic beauty and all of the surrounding natural wonders. Her fascination with the natural wonder led her to start collecting rocks and giving them as gifts to family and friends. As she grew, she developed a passion for art as well, and deeply appreciated the intersection of the world’s natural phenomenons and the artistic world.

As the years went by and Jessica started a family of her own, her passions were laid to rest for the time being. As a young mother to three small children, and the busy wife of a police officer, Jessica was finding herself stressed out and missing her own soul. While suffering from PPA and PPD, she decided to try a mommy and me yoga class, which changed her outlook on everything!

Jessica decided to become a yoga instructor and was very passionate about helping people find their zen through breathing and meditation. While on a trip to Hawaii with her family, she came upon a beach full of rocks and decided to bring some home. As a gift to fellow yogis, she painted unique mandalas on each stone and gave them as gifts. People fell in love with them! A mandala, coming from the Sanskrit for circle, “represents wholeness, a cosmic diagram reminding us of our relation to infinity, extending beyond and within our bodies and minds.” (via)

Jessica is often given stones, or finds them herself; she cleans the stone, sets it under the sun to charge its energy and clears the stone’s energy with sage. She then sets an intention for each stone and paints it with the colors she feels are most beneficial for the stone’s soon-to-be owner. Each stone is totally unique and made only for the person she intended! Mamas use these stones to meditate, pray, set intentions with, carry in their pocket as anxiety-relief, or simply to sit on their desk as a reminder to breathe. You can learn more about Jessica and The Wild Zen on their website, Facebook, and Instagram.

Getting Raw with Christina Vargas

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Pregnancy is a blessing but sometimes it felt like a curse and I feel so guilty…

Now that my baby is a year old I feel like I can talk about this topic. I always get asked this question from moms who struggle during pregnancy because we as new moms feel so guilty. I am so in love with my daughter but my pregnancy was so horrible. If I were to even think about another baby I would want to wait a few years before I even decide whether to have another one. When I was pregnant I threw up multiple times a day, and during each trimester it increased. I was sick and nauseous all day long but I hated lying around all day and doing nothing more then being sick so I gathered my strength and always made it to the gym.

In my first trimester I went to the gym 5-6 times a week. In my second trimester 4-5 times a week and in my 3rd trimester I still worked out 4-5 times a week but some of my workouts where from home. I stopped working out around 8 ½ months because I was throwing up so much that I broke my tailbone while doing so.

Pregnancy is not always glorious even though we are carrying a blessing inside of us. I was very negative about my pregnancy, and you know what? It is OK. I wanted my baby; I was just unhappy I was so sick – but being so sick actually made me a better mom. I appreciated not feeling sick and when I was able to fully be myself again I seized the moment and strived to reach my goals once again.

Even though my pregnancy was horrible, I would do it all over again for my little mini. She is the best gift I could ever ask for. Moms who are struggling with their pregnancy and start getting depressed I suggest trying to have some healthy shakes full of nutrients and make your way to the gym (unless going to the gym is against your doctor’s advice.) If you’re cleared by your OBGYN to go to the gym, do some light cardio and get your blood flowing, and just leave the house! Being cooped up all day will make you even more depressed. If it is nice out, don’t even go to the gym – go for a walk.

Be active because the benefits of being active while you are pregnant will increase your chances of an easier labor and help your baby grow inside of you healthy and strong.

Don’t forget it is natural to be upset and you are doing great – just try to be positive each day by getting your mind off your thoughts. Also, remember you don’t know how amazing you will feel when you become a mom. If you want me to talk about something else leave your comments below.

Mom Sleep Essentials

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

When you have a baby, it’s almost a guarantee that you’ll hear this sage advice from a friend or relative, “Sleep when the baby sleeps.”  When your little one is snoozing, it can be so darn tempting to attend to some of the mundane tasks that are piling up like paying bills, laundry or – heck – even showering!  Our advice? Sleep.  It’s not just because you don’t want to be a disheveled zombie walking around the house, it’s because it’s critical to your wellness and postpartum recovery, as well as helping you to think clearly and generally function in life.

So instead of focusing on essentials for baby sleep today – because we’ve covered that topic a lot – we’re focusing on essentials for you, mama. And these aren’t your run of the mill products either…

Recliner Sleepwear

RECLINER Sleepwear

Developed by a fashion industry executive who was frustrated by the lack of options in sleepwear, RECLINER is luxurious and stylish, yes, but we’re talking about it today as an essential because it’s truly functional and may even help you sleep better.  Their featherweight Japanese satins are machine-washable; the bamboo jersey incredibly soft and comfortable. It’s also temperature-regulating so you can wear it year round. We also love that because bamboo is more absorbent than cotton, it helps prevent sweat from pooling on the skin. For those of us mamas who had crazy postpartum sweats, this is definitely a plus.  Lastly, and possibly most importantly, you’re going to be lounging a lot those first few weeks so why not look cute while doing it?

The Queen Rose Pillow

This U-shaped total body pillow provides side sleepers with the ideal alignment of the spine reducing strain on the lower back, helping to alleviate back pain. The pillow’s unique filling provides comfort for side sleeping and retains fluffiness for better performance and longer use (and there is no chemical-y smell.) By the way, if you haven’t had your babe just yet, the Queen Rose is also ideal for pregnant women, in fact one Amazon reviewer says, “any husband whose wife is expecting should buy this now!”

Venta Kuube

Venta Kuube

The Venta Kuube is a powerful yet compact 2-in-1 humidifier and purifier. Incorporating a “Cold-Water Evaporation technology”, the Kuube operates with a whisper-quiet multi-speed motor to put the perfect amount of humidity into the air, never over-humidifying and never creating white dust or mold. Simultaneously, the Kuube removes airborne pollutants like odors, allergens, dust and dander from the air without the use of filters. The Kuube’s dual purpose coupled with its size make it perfect for small spaces and minimalist parents alike. Perfectly humidified and pure air means moisturized and rejuvenated skin, more restful sleep and increased concentration – three things that every new parent needs. Bonus: crafted air also helps with many of the breathing problems that cause snoring.

basq Lavender Calming Oil

basq Lavender Calming Oil

Due to its pregnancy- and breastfeeding-safe formulations, basq has always been a favorite brand of the team at Gugu Guru.  Monica, Gugu Guru’s founder, swears by the brand’s Lavender Calming Oil for the amazing benefits it provides in her personal care routine. Lavender, after all, is shown in sleep studies to help both infants and adults sleep longer and deeper. Plus the Lavender Calming Oil is also dual purpose for mama + baby; moms can use it on their skin as a relaxing essential oil, while also using it on their babies for infant massage. Basq’s Lavender Calming Oil is free of parabens and phthalates and clinically tested for ZERO skin allergens.  Note: as a little extra refresher, Monica also likes to balance her skin and mind throughout the day with Naturopathica’s Lavender Honey Balancing Mist.

Dirty Lemon [sleep]

While we believe it’s important for new moms to get as much sleep as possible, we caution about getting too drowsy, especially if you’re nursing or co-sleeping with your baby.  Therefore, we 100% recommend consulting your doctor about Dirty Lemon [sleep] (or really any thing you ingest) before you try this product. The [sleep] drink, best taken before bed time, supports a restful night’s sleep by way of its proprietary herb blend, along with Magnesium and rose water. Dirty Lemon’s [sleep] ingredients include filtered water, cold pressed lemon juice, pure rose water, lemon balm, passionflower, chamomile and magnesium glycerinate chelate. Again, check with your physician or Lactation Consultant but all of these ingredients seem fine for nursing (in fact, many experts recommend that nursing mamas take more magnesium) though, according to Kelly Mom, some research suggests that consuming heavy, heavy amounts of lemon balm could affect breastmilk supply – though this is not proven and this may be a plus if you currently experience over-supply.

Quick Zip Sheets

QuickZip Sheets

If you’ve been following Gugu Guru for awhile, you may know that we are big fans of QuickZip crib sheets, but you may not know that we love this brand for us grown ups too. That’s right! We need easy changing bedding as well. As we mention above, new moms can sweat a lot, especially when nursing.  And, if you’re breastfeeding, your boobs can leak on the sheets when you sleep. To top all of this off, sometimes babies have accidents when they’re in your bed  – spit up, urine and the occasional diaper blow-out (hey – it happens!)  So all of this means that you’re going to have to change your sheets a lot more often than usual and maybe even in the wee hours of the night. Make it easy on yourself and go with QuickZip sheets for your adult bed – you can just zip off the top layer without fuss or, more importantly if you’ve had a c-section, without pain. Plus they didn’t sacrifice quality with the functionality, the sheets are 400-thread-count luxurious sateen cotton – soft and smooth against your skin for a great night’s sleep.

7 Tips For A Clutter-Free Life with Kids

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Professional “life de-clutterer” Shira Gill shares seven tips for parents for living a well-edited life filled with fewer, better things…

41CxpvXS8AL

Invest in well made items that will stand the test of time (e.g., wood instead of plastic) instead of cluttering your home with the latest trendy gadgets. Play kitchens, dress-up clothes, toy trucks, building blocks and art supplies will invite open-ended creative play, keeping little hands occupied for hours!

61AwrfCQ5sL._SL1000_

Create an air-tight, labeled box for memorabilia for each child. Use it to store sentimental items, first outfits, special cards, etc.

12314463_10153695829459242_1241277824727559883_o

Stay clutter-free during holidays and birthdays by requesting one big-ticket item from relatives or suggesting an experience such as a membership to the zoo, a trip to a museum or tickets to a puppet show or children’s theater.

51k0eEW7d0L

Invest in functional open bins or pretty baskets to make both toy storage and clean-up a breeze. Group similar items together in separate bins to stay effortlessly organized – i.e building blocks, stuffed animals, board books, etc.

71KZyzexEXL._SX522_

Create a diaper-bag check list so you can make sure you are stocked up on the essentials before running out the door. Make sure to include healthy snacks, hand sanitizer, lip balm, etc. for your own self care.

grocery shopping --- Image by © Royalty-Free/Corbis

When you are creating a gift registry, remember that children actually need very little to stay healthy and happy. Once you have covered the essentials, try requesting meal or grocery deliveries, a cleaning service or even a massage to lighten your load during the first few months with your new baby.

51e5yaszJSL

An organized entry station is essential to staying sane as a busy mom. Make sure you have a designated space for shoes, coats, diaper bags, baby carriers, mail and keys. Wall mounted hooks, shoe cubbies, and labeled bins go a long way in creating a functional and clutter-free entry.

51UKUamijBL

It’s never too early to develop a consistent morning and evening routine for you and your little ones. Keep it simple, and make sure to include a quick clean-up before bed so you don’t wake up to a stressful mess.
