Must Have Essentials: Makeup for New Moms

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Often when the baby comes along, the mama totally forgets about herself – and we are huge fans of self care here at Gugu Guru, even if it just means throwing on some makeup really fast! We asked our baby planners, plus some special friends, what their must have essentials are for makeup when it comes to new motherhood – and some handy tips!

Abby Ludwig, Gugu Guru Registry Consultant –

Must Have New Mom Makeup Essential: When my twins were little and deep exhaustion had set in, there was always one thing that made me feel better; mascara! In 5 seconds, I could easily offer my eyes the little pick-me-up they so desperately needed. My current favorite is the Phyto-Pigments Mascara by Juice Beauty, which is a natural plant-based mascara that offers all the smudge-proof, flake-free feathery lashes a new mama needs!

Check out Abby’s must have essential pick for baby basics.

Lindsay Neely, Greenville, SC, of Your Milk Shoppe –

Must Have New Mom Makeup Essential: I could get Bobbi Brown foundation on in 2 secs and with one hand. Highly recommend it and remember specifically asking the BB counter person if all I had to do is quickly put it on….zero additional steps! ????  and there’s a mirror in the compact too!

Ginny Lawler, Atlanta, GA, of Your Milk Shoppe –

Must Have New Mom Makeup Essential: All new moms need under eye concealer or anti-puffer. Garnier Nutritioniste Skin Renew Anti-Puff eye roller or whatever may be your favorite. A little concealer under the eyes can make you look refreshed and like you actually slept through the night. Sing to your baby while getting ready, distract them all you can while you put makeup on.

Check out Ginny’s pick for newborn lockdown must have essential.

Sarah Slazyk, Columbia, SC, of Your Milk Shoppe –

Must Have New Mom Makeup Essential: My suggestion would be to invest in a good BB or CC cream! For all of those tired days when you have to run a few errands or want to look like there is still some life left in you around visiting friends– Taking less than 30 seconds to apply, BB creams can make all the difference by adding a little color to brighten up that sleepy smile! (Doesn’t have to be $$ either. Most make-up brands have it and it’s a great Target add on for around $12)

Check out Sarah’s one baby registry must have essential item.

Kimmie Johnson of Your Milke Shoppe –

Must Have New Mom Makeup Essential: BeautyCounter sells a kit with makeup essentials called Flawless in Five. Concealer (every mom’s best friend!), tinted moisturizer, brow pencil, mascara, lip gloss, and blush/bronzer for the extra frisky days. Voila! Mama is fresh-faced and ready to rock in 5 minutes or less.

We also asked our friend (and mom of 3), celebrity makeup artist, Jamie Makeup for some advice:

Must Have New Mom Makeup Essential:  I think when you’re pregnant it’s all about taking care of your skin. So I would invest in some sort of botanical oil for your face. Two of my favorites are Vintner’s Daughter and True Botanicals. These oils are super hydrating, calming, and safe for pregnancy. Once your face is feeling good it’s easier to get makeup to sit naturally on your face. I would make your life easier and choose a tinted moisturizer with spf. Juice Beauty and Suntegrity are my favorite. Lastly find the perfect lip shade for you! I loved wearing clean skin and bold lip. I was rocking Charlotte Tilbury in Lost Cherry for months. And I’d use it on my cheeks too, to make my life easier.

Check out Jamie’s LA Baby Must Have Essentials.

Jordan Reid, mom of two and the writer behind Ramshackle Glam, adds:

Must Have New Mom Makeup Essential: Self-tanning face moisturizer. Moisturizer for obvious reasons, but I like a formula with just a hint of self-tanner because it makes you look like you haven’t spent several days or weeks (or months) hiding in a dark hole, utterly deprived of all sleep and (non-tiny) human interaction. If you choose a super-quick-drying brand – because obviously you’re going to forget you put it on immediately after you do – it makes you look instantly glowy(er) and awake(r).

Check out our baby registry picks over on Ramshackle Glam, and Jordan’s Mompreneur Spotlight, too.

Los Angeles Baby Registry Must Haves

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Today’s guest post comes from the crazy talented and hilarious mama and makeup extraordinaire, Jamie Greenberg, of Jamie Makeup. She’s a mama to two littles and one on the way and is here to share what she thinks are must have essentials for Los Angeles mamas. You can find Jamie on her website and Instagram.

Being a working mom of two (almost three!) can be a bit challenging- especially while living in the crazy city of Los Angeles! My name is Jamie Greenberg and I am a celebrity makeup artist to some of the funniest gals in the game (Kaley Cuoco, Rashida Jones, Chelsea Handler to name a few) but my favorite job of all is being the mama to Leni (7) and Simon (3). It has taken some time, but with baby #3 on the way, I can confidently say I have finally found my favorite baby products. They make being a mom in LA a lot easier!

Kirkland Ultra Soft Baby Wipes (Costco!): Living in sunny Los Angeles has one minor downside- dry skin. On top of that, my kiddos have sensitive skin so finding the right baby wipes was important to me. I stumbled up these ultra soft Costco wipes a few years ago and haven’t looked back! They are made without all the bad stuff (dyes, parabens, phthalates, etc.) so I can feel good knowing they aren’t going to cause their bum bums any discomfort!

The Honest Company Bubble Bath: Los Angeles heat=lots of dust and dirt. Bath time is much needed in my house! My favorite bubble bath of all time is by The Honest Company. The bubbles won’t disappear after a few minutes of playing!

The Ollie World Swaddle: Super easy to use- who doesn’t love velcro?!

Project Nursery Sound Machine: Living in a busy city can mean a lot of hustle and bustle right outside your window. My favorite sound machine is by Project Nursery. It is very affordable (only $49) and not only plays soothing sounds for the baby, but is also a projector and a nightlight! We’ve had ours for years!

Kickee Pants-Clothing/Pajamas: Los Angeles is filled with some very fashionable people- why shouldn’t the babies be dressed to the nines as well?! My favorite brand for baby pajamas is KicKee Pants! I love how they wear and they wash very well. I wish they made my size!

Skip Hop Vibrant Village Activity Gym: It’s a great place for baby to play and rest – and pretty rad looking too! Because it is super lightweight, it can travel around the house easily, and even on set or outside in the gorgeous LA weather.

Maternity Style: Urban Boho Mama

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

We’re sharing our favorite maternity looks for mama style; today’s look is the Urban Boho Mama! What does that mean, exactly? The term boho comes from bohemian which refers to the retro hippie style like you’d have seen on dreamers, activists, and artists from the beat generation. However, the urban boho look refers to a little more of a polished twist on the boho look – still comfortable with lots of flowers and flow, just a little more cleaned up and streamlined. The urban boho trend is super popular all across the country right now, so we rounded up some style ideas for maternity looks.

1. Navy Paisley Tie Front Maternity Maxi Dress; 2. Peach Floral Off Shoulder Maternity Maxi Dress; 3. Grey Floral Off Shoulder Maternity Maxi Dress; 4. Heather Grey Off Shoulder Ruffle Trim Maternity Maxi Dress; 5. Teal Floral Chiffon Long Sleeve V-Neck Maternity Maxi Dress; 6. Light Blue Rose Off Shoulder Maternity Maxi Dress

When it comes to shoes, you’re going to want something cute (duh), but also without straps, laces, or ties, as it’s pretty hard to bend over and see your own feet when you’re super pregnant. We love these urban boho shoes because they’re sturdy, beautiful, and neutral colors.

1. Brown Faux Leather Cutout Overlay Boot; 2. Olive Strapped Ankle Boot; 3. Black Faux Leather Cutout Bootie; 4. Black Solid Faux Suede Boots

1. Babymel Grace Faux Leather Satchel Diaper Bag, Tan; 2. Arrows Weekender Bag by White Elm – Large Diaper Tote (budget find!); 3. KF Baby Bohemian Diaper Bag Value Set (budget find!); 4. timi & leslie Charlie 7-Piece Diaper Bag Set

Editor’s Picks: Mother’s Day Gift Guide Featuring Tiny Tags

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

-Sponsored Post –

It seems as though there are never enough ideas for the perfect gift for mom for Mother’s Day; since the Gugu Guru team sees quite a large number of ideas cross our desks, we thought it would be fun to ask our team what they are hoping for this Mother’s Day!

Olivia, Gugu Guru’s Editor-in-Chief: Tiny Tags Jewelry – So, true confession, I already have a Tiny Tags necklace (see above, those are my boys’ names), but I’m obsessed with Tiny Tags. Seems I’m not alone either; Nicole Phelps is a big fan (we love her double sided personalized necklace), as is Tiffany Theissen, Selma Blair and Ceci New York. Tiny Tags creates gorgeous and stylish jewelry for moms which are also incredibly meaningful. Whether it is the date you first laid eyes on your firstborn, or all of your children’s names, or the time your baby was born, Tiny Tags turns memories into heirloom jewelry pieces. With a ton of styles to choose from, as well as gold or silver, you’re sure to find a unique gift for the women in your life this Mother’s Day.

So, why do I want another Tiny Tags if I have one? I’ll be honest – it’s a selfish reason. First off, I love how lightweight and easy to wear these are. I wear mine with every outfit, whether I’m dressing up or down. Secondly, although I have one necklace with my boys’ names on it, I would love individual necklaces with their name and birth time on them. Why? Because, of all the things I remember about giving birth to my sons, I cannot for the life of me remember the time they were born. What better way to remember than on a gorgeous gold chain? Tiny Tags is the ultimate Mother’s Day gift for any pregnant mama, new mom, grandma, aunt, or best mom friend. The last day for free shipping is May 2nd, so get shopping!

Shana, Gugu Guru’s Director of Content Marketing: Leather Tote, The Flourish Market – I’ve had my eye on this Joyn India leather tote that I spotted at local boutique, The Flourish Market, which partners with 40 brands that provide dignified jobs to vulnerable people. The super stylish bag is large enough to be my diaper bag without being unwieldy and is entirely handcrafted! It will be my Mother’s Day gift to myself, so I can feel a bit more Shana and a little less mommy, but still be socially responsible.

Monica Banks, Gugu Guru’s Founder: Phillip Ashley Chocolates – This is Olivia – speaking for Monica here – but, I’m going to reveal something about Monica to the world. If you mention the word “chocolate” around Monica, her arms start flailing wildly and she excitedly asks, “have you tried Phillip Ashley Chocolates?!” So, when we asked her what she wanted this Mother’s Day, it came as no surprise to the Gugu Gang that she responded with a two word answer: Phillip Ashley. And, of course, you can see why! Aren’t those chocolates gorgeous? Based in Memphis, Tennessee, Phillip Ashley handcrafts all of the chocolates in his design studio. Phillip Ashley has been named one of the Best Chocolatiers and Confectioners in America by TasteTV. Not only would these chocolates bring joy to any mom, grandma, aunt, or friend this Mother’s Day, but they make such a gorgeous piece of art, too!

Thank you to Tiny Tags for making this sponsored post possible.

Mom Style: goodbody goodmommy Multitasking Cardigan

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

If there’s one thing any parent knows it’s that multitasking is the key to survival with a baby! When it comes to mom-style, it’s not always easy to find postpartum clothing which not only makes mom feel and look great, but is functional too. However, the dynamic duo of a mom and midwife teamed up to create the goodbody goodmommy Multitasking Cardigan. With a unique point of view, designing the cardigan from all perspectives, this stylish piece of clothing is a must-have for any woman.

The beauty of this cardigan lies in the simplicity of its multi-functional design; made from 90% modal and 10% spandex, this cardigan isn’t just functional, but feels amazingly soft on your skin as well. This made in the United States cardigan is a brilliant investment as a wardrobe staple, as it will transition smoothly through all the journeys in a woman’s life. What woman doesn’t have a black cardigan as a staple piece of clothing? Exactly! However, this cardigan does it all.

As a maternity piece, you’ll feel sleek and chic, even with your belly popping out, as the arms are fitted and long, to contribute to a sleek silhouette. If you’re cold, you can simply wrap the cardigan around your baby bump – and many moms find this is a perfect accompaniment to gym attire, as it doesn’t wrinkle!

Once you have the baby, we love the fact that the cardigan has two giant pockets! Perfect for holding a pacifier, nursing pads, chapstick, or even a snack. Time to feed baby? No worries, goodbody goodmommy has you covered. Simply find the loop under the shoulder and fasten it to the button on the opposite side to create a discrete and comfortable cover. Whether you’re breast or bottle feeding, it’s a wonderful way to have a little extra coverage and warmth for your little one. Babywearing? Don’t forget your goodbody goodmommy cardigan, as it’s light enough to comfortably wear while wearing baby, and can easily wrap around your little one as you wear them. Spouse surprise you with date night? Grandma’s got baby, and you have a comfortable and sexy cardigan to head out in – with its well designed cut, you’ll feel put together and stylish all night long!

The cardigan is designed to be paired with everything from workout clothes to jeans or even a dress. Some moms even bring it to the hospital to deliver in! Just like you’ve waited forever to meet your baby, now you can meet your forever-cardigan with goodbody goodmommy’s multitasking cardigan.

You can find goodbody goodmommy on their website, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

Cozy Mom Essentials

by Gugu Guru 1 Comment

Well, we hate to say it, but the good ol’ groundhog saw his shadow. While we have four more weeks of winter, at least we can be stylin’ for those weeks, right? Today we rounded up our favorite cozy essentials for you, mama! Check out the post to see our cozy suggestions.
B & me Booker Coat: When it’s cold outside, but you’re pregnant or babywearing, it’s not always easy to find an accommodating and stylish jacket. Luckily, the Booker Coat from B & me is the perfect transitional piece of clothing for any woman’s wardrobe. This coat, which comes in black and gray, can be worn three ways: as a regular coat; or as a maternity coat; or as a coat to wear over your child in a separate baby carrier. It can be worn in the fall, spring, warmer winter days or even the coldest winter days with layering. This coat, which comes in small, medium, or large features a two-way center vertical zipper and invisible zippers on the jacket sides for adjustable room. For the busy mama on the run, you can easily throw your phone or keys into the pockets with the tandem two-way zippers, each above the front pockets; the coat has 4 pockets in all.  The bottom of the coat has adjustable drawstring to help you with all the different size transitions. PS. B & me also has an adorable and warm vest, and coats for men too!

Beluga Baby Wrap: When it’s chilly out, baby wants to be snug and close to your warm body. We’re big fans of the super soft wraps from Beluga Baby. The wrap is suitable for babies to 25 pounds, and is a wonderful way to tote baby around in the colder weather. Beluga Baby wraps are made from sustainable bamboo fabric, safe for baby and very soft on their sensitive skin, too! These wraps are breathable and will help keep baby warm in the chilly weather and cool in the summertime.
Bundle Organics: Looking for something warm and soothing to sip on all winter? Bundle Organics Hot Teas are your answer – for moms all at stages, pregnancy, post-partum, breastfeeding and beyond. Bundle Organics teas are blended by esteemed tea merchants Harney & Sons to provide expecting and new moms a nourishing, flavorful and tranquil tea-drinking experience. Their unique pregnancy blends are thoughtfully designed with whole- food based, OBGYN-approved ingredients to address moms’ needs during all stages of pregnancy. The lactation blend is designed with ingredients that help support healthy lactation so that you can get back to connecting with baby. Go ahead. Sip away.
Loyal Hana Clothing: When it comes to your pregnancy wardrobe, every pregnant and nursing mom should have one must-have maternity and nursing piece she can depend on. Loyal Hana was created to give back to the expecting and nursing moms who give so much to the little ones in their lives. They feature a collection of stylish comfortable garments that enables the modern woman to transition from the bump, the boob and beyond. Not only are all of Loyal Hana’s pieces transitional pieces throughout motherhood, but also seasonally! Loyal Hana’s clothing are a wise style investment because they can be worn all through the stages of your life, and all through the different seasons, as well.
Newlie Gray Louise Backpack Diaper Bag: Let’s be honest, when we become moms, we know we need a diaper bag, but we also want to look stylish and put-together, especially in the cold weather when we’re covered up from head to toe! Luckily, Newlie makes the most functional and stylish diaper bags. The Louise Backpack Diaper Bag can be worn as both a backpack and a shoulder bag. Even better, this is the perfect transitional baby bag. With their signature interior insulated pocket, you can store baby bottles during the diaper years and snacks as during the toddler years. This bag will hold all of your cold weather essentials – gloves, hats, scarves – for both mama and baby. Plus, this diaper bag can be worn as a backpack if you’re babywearing during the winter!

Koolaburra by UGG Cable Boot: Keep your feet toasty and warm this winter with the Koolaburra by UGG Cable Boots. Festival fashion at its finest, the Cable combines soft suede and look-at-me tassels create a boho-chic boot with style to spare. A flirty fringe exterior evokes a vintage vibe, while a combo of plush sheepskin, faux fur, and a cushioning Thinsulate sockliner delivers that coveted, comfort-for-days feeling.

Mom Style: Staying Stylish When Breastfeeding With Allette

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

The lovely ladies of Allette are here today to share their tips for dressing chic while breastfeeding! Head to the bottom of the post for an exclusive discount, too! Want to know more about the company? Head to our Product Discovery post on Allette.

Hello new or expectant parent!

This is Celine. My business partner (and fellow Brooklyn mom), Oksana, and I started Allette, a new line of cute clothes to breastfeed in. For you.

If you’ll indulge us a little bit, we’ll tell you a little about us, our brand, why we started it and our fashion tips for making the best out of your nursing journey and beyond. If you’re already nursing, some of this may resonate with you. If you’re planning to nurse when baby comes, take note! Fashion and nursing’s relationships have been on “it’s complicated” status since, well, forever, but we are determined to change that.

We created Allette for moms who love clothes and do not want to compromise their style when they’re breastfeeding. Each unique Brooklyn-made style is comfortable, flattering, easy to care for, and yeah, pretty cute. So about you. Let’s assume you’ve had the baby already (yay – congrats!). Maybe you don’t quite fit into your old clothes yet and you don’t want to spend another day in your maternity wardrobe (made to show off the bump!). That’s where we come in. Our approach is simple; we design and make clothes that we love – and then figure out how to stylishly and conveniently include discreet nursing access. The result is a collection of dresses and tops cool and chic moms actually want to wear. When they’re nursing, and when they’re done nursing.

Making your wardrobe work for breastfeeding is definitely doable. But some days, you have a lunch or party to go to (with baby in tow of course!) and you want something that will look amazing. Something that you don’t have to worry about how you’re going to breastfeed. That’s an Allette day. And once you have just one top or dress that is just right, you’ll be amazed how much easier life gets (ok oversell, dressing gets easier!). Designs made to be dressed up or down, you’ll want to wear your allette piece every day. And now, here are three fashion tips we live by. And because, as we’ve already established, we don’t believe in changing your style to nurse, these apply to whatever life stage you’re at.

1. Know your body and what looks good on it. Sure, those off-the-shoulder tops are adorable and that high-waisted A-line skirt to die for. But does it look good on you? As we get older we have a natural tendency to move away from wearing clothes because they’re trendy and choose styles which actually look good on us. This is a good thing. There are so many designs out there, not all of them are right for us. And when you’ve just had a baby, this is doubly important. Getting to know your new body and what works with it is key. That’s why Allette clothes are designed to be flattering on a postpartum body and still look great when you lose more of the baby weight (because you will – patience!). We test all of our styles on multiple body types to ensure it works across many shapes and sizes.

2. Mix and match. Who can afford a designer wardrobe? The key is to pair inexpensive mass retail items (think H&M or Zara) with one or more unique pieces from designers you love. The result is effortless chic without breaking the bank. So maybe it’s a Forever 21 tank top paired with Sandro jeans and cute flats you got in a flea market. Or an Allette dress with a pair of cool Urban Outfitters loafers you got on sale and a H&M tote. Invest in a few items you love and play around with your wardrobe.

3. Take good care of your clothes. So, this one often gets overlooked but so true. How many time have you seen a girl wearing a super cute top but it’s so wrinkled it looks like she pulled it out of a bin at the Salvation Army and threw it on? If you don’t take care of your clothes, they won’t take care of you. Obv you’ve just had a baby and the last thing you feel like doing is ironing your top which will just have to be washed again in a few hours once baby feeds. At Allette, all of our clothes are easy care so you don’t have to worry. Machine washable and almost always dryer-friendly to take a load off the laundry load (puns are awesome!). If you look good, you’ll feel good. And if you feel good, baby will also feel good. It’s science.

How to Dress While Wearing a Ring Sling (+ giveaway!)

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Today’s guest post is from Keila of Mommy in Milwaukee – she’s sharing her tips for styling up while babywearing using a Wildbird Ring Sling.

blogger-image--1629329252

As someone who has been a huge fan of babywearing since my first son’s birth, I’ve had to learn to be creative when it comes to styling this helpful baby gear. If you babywear, then you probably already know that it’s much more than keeping your baby close; it becomes a way of life. In the beginning, it was really difficult for me to find ways to stay true to my style while babywearing. I loved trying out different ways to wear my babies using wraps, carriers and slings. Among these options, I’ve found that slings tend to be the most outfit-friendly. They’re easy to put on and have various ways to be worn. I love the side-carry because it feels like I’m holding my babe on my hip and I don’t have as much strain on my back.

Throughout the years I’ve found a few key pieces that I gravitate towards more often. These pieces are comfortable, stylish and look great with your Wildbird sling! I have to say, though, that the cutest accessory is always my little babe 😉 All of these items are also nursing-friendly and great as layered pieces now with the cooler fall weather!

shirtdress

The shirt dress: A shirt dress is such a versatile piece in every mama’s closet. They work well with leggings, booties and layered with a thin sweater or jacket on cooler days. (Dress on the left; dress on the right)

cardiganleggings

The open cardigan: This one comes in burgundy and tan! Cardigans are great for layering over a sling especially when it’s cooler outside. What’s great about an open-cardigan is that they usually have a bit more material and you can comfortably wrap it around your baby when worn. It’s also a great way to add a bit of cozy and cute to any outfit.

The go-to legging: If you don’t already own a good pair of leggings, then now is the time to make that happen! Leggings can be layered & are comfy. These also cover your tummy, and that provides extra coverage if you’re nursing. That’s always a plus for me!

tunic

The button-down: With the cooler temps, I love wearing warmer button-downs. They’re perfect for the season and layer really well under a sling. An added bonus is that they’re forgiving when it comes to wrinkles!

The jumpsuit: As a mama of 3 under 3, I tend to gravitate towards easy pieces that aren’t a hassle to put together. Enter the jumpsuit. With this piece, you have a chic ensemble that can be dressed up or down with the right accessories.

I hope this little list is helpful. Leave a comment for your go-to and must-have pieces. Happy babywearing!
