Cause Driven Pajamas: Sammy + Nat

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Whenever we come across an adorable pajama company, we have to share it with all of you because…a baby can’t have too many pajamas, are we right or what? Plus, it’s even better when the company gives back to someone in need! Sammy + Nat is a classically lovely pajama company who is giving back to a family in need and we are thrilled to be introducing you to them today.

Sammy + Nat, founded by two sisters, sets out to create staple pieces in the softest, safest fabrics for the little ones in your life. Their hand-sourced pima cotton adjusts to your baby’s temperature, keeping them dry, comfortable and smiling. Classic silhouettes in soft hues and clean lines mean it’s easy to mix, match and head out the door. Their cotton is naturally hypo-allergenic, ideal for babies who are sensitive to allergies and prone to skin irritation.

Plus, their adorable clothing is eco-friendly, as they use pima cotton, which is from the earth. Its seeds are harvested by hand and cultivated in excellent growing conditions, found only in the coastal valleys of Peru. Seed by seed, this artisanal process results in smooth, silky-soft fabrics that stand the test of time. With every wash, the softness only gets softer, lasting 3x as long as any other cottons. You can also monogram Sammy + Nat pajamas, making them a perfect baby shower gift!

In honor of Mother’s Day, we wanted to share the story of Sammy + Nat, as the founder, Samantha, lost her mother to breast cancer at a very young age; when she heard about Mary’s Mom’s story, she knew she had to find a way to help, and we are sharing her story today. Mary is the rosy-cheeked, blond-haired 25-month-old baby girl of Lisa and Eric. She has an older brother, 16-year-old Dean, Eric’s son from a previous relationship. Lisa and Eric lead a simple, but happy life, making the best of limited resources. Last summer, Lisa’s life changed in a day. What was supposed to be a routine visit to the doctor for what she assumed was a swollen neck gland led to a series of tests that confirmed it as a lymph node, a classic symptom of Hodgkin’s lymphoma – Lisa was in Stage Three. The revelation was a blow, testing everything they knew and hoped for.

Besides the obvious emotional struggles and fear that surround cancer, there are so many additional drains that are not always as apparent to the outside world. How does the family keep going? How does dad do his job and look after the kids? What happens when you’re alone, with no support? What about lost income? And bills? The biggest stress for Lisa’s family is financial. In order to help Lisa and Mary’s family, Sammy + Nat is donating 20% of all proceeds on SammyAndNat.com to their GoFundMe page, Mary’s Mom. If there were ever a time to splurge on some new pajamas, this is it!

As Samantha, from Sammy + Nat says, “I’m moved by Lisa’s story, not just because she’s a neighbor and a friend, a woman struggling with adversity on multiple fronts, always with optimism and a smile on her face; or because she happens to be going through what I watched my own mother go through twenty years ago, and feel it viscerally; or because it just doesn’t seem fair that this should happen to a young mother with so much to give and so many plans to realize. I’m moved because I empathize—and because I think I can do something about it. It doesn’t take much to make a difference to someone in need, by easing the pressures as they struggle to make it to the other side of the challenge life has thrown them.”

Perfect Gift Ideas

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

At Gugu Guru, we just love gifts that keep on giving. Whether they’re smart, practical finds, heirloom quality or cause-driven, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite gift ideas for growing families. These make wonderful baby shower gifts or add them to your registry.

Cause-Driven Fashion

We would be crazy about the adorable and affordable fashions from Smockingbird anyway, but the fact that the brand gives back to a different cause each month makes us love them even more.  Started by two best friends (who also happen to be sisters-in-law),  Smockingbird offers really cute clothes for children at unbeatable prices.

Smart Finds

Self-care is so important when you’re a new mama and, let’s be honest, breastfeeding can be hard. You can get clogged ducts, pain from mastitis, milk blebs and other discomforts associated with breastfeeding. Of course it’s all worth it to give your babe the best, but you don’t have to suffer through it.  Rachel’s Remedy breastfeeding relief packs are a brand new way to treat, soothe and relieve breastfeeding conditions. They offer FDA cleared, moist heat or cooling therapy.

Speaking of comfort or discomfort for that matter, pumping can sometimes be painful for moms, especially those who are exclusively pumping. BeauGen wants to help moms have a more positive, more comfortable breast-pumping experience. BeauGen nipple cushions are a soft, stretchy, and convenient solution that can significantly reduce the pain and discomfort of breast pumping.

Baby K'Tan Diaper Bag

One of the things we love the most about the Baby K’Tan Diaper Bag is its built-in wetbag with antibacterial lining – making it a super smart find for parents. This very stylish diaper bag is made of a unique medical-grade FDA approved nylon, the built-in wet bag pocket is resistant against the growth of germs and odor-causing bacteria, and is completely washable and food safe.

Adorable & Eco-Friendly Accents

Finch & Cotter

One of our favorite gift ideas, is the personalized birth announcement pillow from our friends at Finch & Cotter. Just provide them with the baby’s stats and they’ll create a custom birth announcement pillow. Aside from being such a special, personalized gift, we love that Finch & Cotter is made in the USA from eco-friendly inks and organic cotton canvas so it’s safe for any nursery.

Baby Baazaar

If you’re into global chic aesthetic and favor eco-friendly, fair trade practices – look no further than one of our latest discoveries: Baby Baazaar. Baby Baazaar’s aim is to bring hard-to find, eco-friendly children’s products to parents everywhere. The founder is originally from India, and she continues to be inspired by the unique aesthetics and handcrafting abilities of the artisans back home.

Thank you to Smockingbird, Finch & Cotter, Rachel’s Remedy, BeauGen, Baby Baazaar and Baby K’Tan for making this sponsored post possible.

An Avid Runner’s 6 Baby Registry Picks

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

We connected with running mom, Leah Balentine, on Instagram last year when she was pregnant and we’ve followed her ever since. Now a new mommy to her adorable little running buddy, we find Leah’s posts super inspiring plus she’s a Charity Miles ambassador and that means, every time she gets moving (which is a lot), she earns money for a charity of her choosing. With the theme of healthy living and New Year’s resolutions in mind, we asked Leah to guest blog for Gugu Guru this month and share some of her avid running mama picks. Here’s what she had to say:

I started distance running after college. I ran my first marathon (Marine Corps Marathon) with Team in Training in 2009. One thing led to another and over the last few years I have run 10 marathons. I slowed down but continued to run during pregnancy.

Stroller running brings a whole new level of intensity but it is so fun! We love to run around Honolulu. A great place for stroller running near us is Ala Moana Park. It’s a beautiful, paved park.

Here are some of my top picks for avid running mamas:

  1. Thule Urban Glide is an all-round sports stroller with a sleek and lightweight design making it perfect for urban mobility or jogging on your favorite path.

Baby Bump Stability Yoga Ball

2. Stability ball for core/pelvic strength.

Running Journal

3. Running journal to keep track of fitness during pregnancy and postpartum progress.

Moving Comfort Women's Juno Bra
4. A supportive sports bra that allows for breastfeeding. I like the Moving Comforts Juno Sports Bra.

BaoBei Maternity Belly Sports Bra
5. A Bao Bei Maternity Sports Band to provide pregnant belly support for workouts.

Gabrialla Maternity Support Belt
6. Gabrialla maternity support belt – I found this one works best for belly support specifically during running versus just general workouts.

Adoption Month With Live Sweet Photography

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Today we have a wonderful guest post by one of our favorite mamas, Lindsey Bonnice of Live Sweet Photography. She’s here to talk all about the adoption journey of her two youngest children. Don’t forget to check out her baby registry essentials for an adoptive mama, too!

livesweet1

Hi I’m Lindsey from Live Sweet Photography and I am so excited to be here today sharing with you a little about our adoption journey! Adoption has always been a dream of mine. My husband and I talked about it before we were even married and although I didn’t know when we would add to our family through adoption I knew for sure that I wanted to grow our family someday through it. We had our son Noah biologically in 2008 and when he was about three years old we decided that it was time to add another baby to our family. We started discussing adoption and few months later decided that we were ready to start the process. We used an agency in Florida for both of our adoptions because Florida is a safe state and is a wonderful state to work with when adopting. We started our process in July of 2012, it took us several months to complete paperwork and get our home study done. We were officially on the adopting family waiting list with our agency in October of 2012 and shortly after we were matched with Miss Libby’s birth mother. The waiting stage was the hardest but so worth the wait. Miss Libby arrived in February of 2013, we lived in Florida for about three weeks during our adoption and then brought her home! Libby’s adoption was very fast and such a huge blessing to us.

livesweet2

In the beginning of 2015 we decided we were ready to start the process to add another precious babe to our family. We went through similar steps as we did with Libby but this time we had several maybe matches that did not end up going through. Those times were very hard and got me questioning so many things but I just kept reminding myself that our baby the one who was meant for our family was out there and in perfect time we would be united! That could not have been more true and in March of 2016 our sweet Finn was born! He is the perfect addition to our family and we are all more than smitten with him! Adoption is a huge step, it’s big and scary and a lot of work, but there is also not much else as rewarding as adoption is. Our family has been blessed so much for adoption and we could not be more thankful!

livesweet3

Since I had such passion and love for adoption I decided I wanted to do something to help spread that love! In 2014 after adopting Libby I started Live Sweet Shop to create jobs for local women and support and share our love for adoption. We created plush animals first and called them Sweeties after what we called Libby “our little sweetheart” while we were waiting for her. All of our pieces are handmade with love in the USA by local seamstresses. All of our dolls and Sweeties come with adoption certificates and we donate funds to adopting families each month. We are also starting a new program to help donate even more funds to adopting families, we will be offering adopting families spots to host adoption fundraising parties in our online store each month. We are so excited about this program because now everyone who is looking to raise funds for their adoption will have the opportunity to! Be sure to follow along on our Live Sweet Photography Instagram and Live Sweet Shop Instagram!

In honor of National Adoption Month, Live Sweet Shop has created this adorable print – it’s yours for free, just head over to Live Sweet Photography, subscribe to their newsletter and this print will be emailed right away to you! Print

Back to Sleep Day 12: Owlet

by Gugu Guru 6 Comments

With unintentional suffocation the leading cause of injury death among U.S. children under the age of one, it’s no wonder parents often have trouble getting a good night’s sleep during baby’s first year.  So, on the twelfth day of Back To Sleep, we are featuring a company that has an amazing mission when it comes to safe sleep: Owlet. Owlet is a device worn like a sock on your baby’s foot designed to alert you if your baby stops breathing. With the Owlet monitor, parents and caregivers can rest easy knowing there is an extra set of eyes watching over baby. GG_BacktoSleep_2016-33 gadget

While Owlet is certainly cutting edge, this is actually a “smart” device you don’t really need to be a gadget geek to appreciate. The Owlet device uses hospital technology called pulse oximetry, miniaturized into a snuggly Smart Sock that your little one wears to bed at night. The base station collects vitals data from the Smart Sock via bluetooth to the base station located on the parents’ night stand. Then parents can remotely monitor vitals within the smart phone app.

WorkingMom

If you’re a working parent and especially one that may leave baby at daycare, you can have peace of mind that Owlet is monitoring baby, providing peace of mind. Owlet is the only monitor that uses hospital technology designed to alert if your baby’s heart rate or oxygen fall outside of range. Plus if both parents work both of you can access your child’s information on the Owlet app from your respective smartphones.

small-businessOwlet was founded by a team of passionate parents who wanted to bring themselves—and other parents around the globe—peace of mind. The co-founders of Owlet, all of whom are young fathers, have learned firsthand what it is like to lose sleep worrying about their babies. As parents, the team at Owlet feels that they are their own target market – all have young children and all have experienced the stress of coming home that first night and the hundreds of the feelings and emotions that come with it. The Owlet team is built around this knowledge and passion for helping others.

Traveler

Moms love traveling with their Solly Baby wrap because it’s a lifesaver! It gives you your hands back while keeping your baby close. A Solly Baby wrap helps to calm even the fussiest babies, especially babies with reflux or gas. (A Pediatric study found that wearing your infant 3 hours a day reduces infant crying by 43% – that’s something everyone on your flight will cheer about with you!) Solly Baby Wraps provide a womb-like environment for baby when you’re on the go that makes them feel secure, safe, and comfortable.

climate Because they are constructed with Certified Lenzing Modal, Solly Baby wraps are incredibly lightweight, cool to the touch and get softer with each wash all while being strong enough to be dried in a conventional dryer on low heat without wearing down.

matimati1

It seems as though when your baby starts teething, drool gets everywhere. We mean…everywhere, all day long! You’ll be changing their soaked clothing multiple times a day, and believe us, that can get really tiring. How do you combat the constant drool battle? With gorgeous bandana bibs from Matimati Baby! Founded by a mother who was tired of seeing her son covered in drool all the time, she designed and created these super soft, thick, and adorable bandana bibs for babies and toddlers. They are completely functional and utterly stylish!

These bibs are super absorbent; each bib is made with two layers of fabric to increase absorbency. The front of each bib is made from 100% organic cotton, and the back layer is made from super absorbent polyester fleece – there is no crinkly plastic bib next to your baby’s face. The bandana bibs are adjustable in size, and have nickel-free snaps which won’t lose hold over time, like most velcro does. Matimati understands that a baby is only young once, and you love dressing them in all of their cute outfits, which is why they aim to make the most stylish and modern prints; most of them are even gender neutral, so they make perfect baby shower gifts.
