Winter Pregnancy

What’s New on Gugu: December 11, 2019

by Abby Ludwig Leave a Comment

During the holiday season, it is so easy for moms and moms-to-be to forget to stock up on products to treat themselves! Below are some fun new finds from the pregnancy, postpartum, and motherhood market. We love these as gifts for expectant moms or as a personal gift to focus on the always-important (and never attainable) self-care! Let us know some of your favorite just for mom products!

For a number of our other favorites, please check out our Explore page!

NYSSA Postpartum Underwear: Called the ‘Fourthwear’ Collection, we love this update to the standard mesh undies you’ll receive in the hospital. They are stretchy and you can easily insert an ice pack or heating pad where it may be needed most. They can also be worn high-waisted or rolled down for maximum comfort no matter what type of delivery. Love these for all moms to be!

Soothing Scents Expecting Personal Inhaler for Morning Sickness: Those dreaded days full of morning sickness (or all-day sickness) can be behind you! Utilizing essential oils, this inhaler works immediately and is 100% natural. Check with your OB before purchase, but we love the idea of combating morning sickness without added medication.

GLOWE Maternity Leggings: These leggings will be supportive and comfortable from first trimester to the postpartum days! They will give you the support of a medical maternity belt without the bulk of wearing one. Plus they are made from a super soft Italian fabric so you will beat that back pain in style!

The Laundress New Mom Kit: It’s absolutely amazing how one (or two in my case) little babes can dramatically increase the amount of laundry you find yourself doing. The Laundress has created their New Mom Kit to help combat those messy spit ups and blow outs without harsh chemicals, petroleum, phosphate, phthalates, or artificial color. Plus I love that this kit comes with stain remover (a must for little ones) as well as all other detergent products you would need!

HATCH Mama Must-Haves Kit:  An excellent set for pregnant and new moms, HATCH has put together a set of three top selling products. Their Belly Oil is excellent for your moisturizing your growing belly. Down, Girl is  great for relieving swelling in your legs and feet. Nipple + Lip helps keep those special parts (your nipples and lips) hydrated during pregnancy and while nursing. Plus it all comes wrapped in the cutest gift box!

Please note that these opinions are 100% my own and I have not received any products in exchange for placement in What’s New on Gugu!

The Village Reviews: Beautycounter Winter Favorites

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Winter weather is here! Let Beautycounter provide relief to dry skin the natural way with their Baby Daily Protective Balm and Baby Soothing Oil. Both products are great for babies and parents alike. Beautycounter excludes over 1,500 questionable ingredients to keep things simple and safe. Our Gugu Village Parents were able to test Beautycounter’s Baby Protective Baby Balm and Baby Soothing Oil and provided us with their thoughts.

I am always excited to try new natural skincare products and loved adding BeautyCounter’s Baby Soothing Oil to my son’s beauty regimen.

When I first received the bottle I wondered how many applications it would last for, but was pleasantly surprised how little product you actually needed to use. The oil is very light upon application and easily absorbed into the skin. I also really like that it had a very light fragrance that wouldn’t overwhelm my son.

This would be a great product for dry winter skin and is definitely a product I could use myself as well.

I have tried a lot of children’s moisturizers on the market and the BeautyCounter Baby Soothing Oil is my favorite!
-April A.

I tried the Beautycounter Baby Daily Protective Balm and I like how it is a completely natural alternative for diaper rash creams. We have used it on my son’s bum at night time diapers to help create a barrier to make it to the morning without any rashes. I also have used it around his chin where his skin is reddened from the paci and drooling due to teething. It would be nice for the winter in a dry, cold environment. I do love how it is made of completely safe ingredients and is unscented for sensitive baby skin.
-Kelsey M.

I had the opportunity to test Baby Soothing Oil by BeautyCounter. I wash my hands a lot and suffer from very dry hands and eczema. Usually, when I put lotion or anything on my hands, they burn where the eczema cuts are, but not with this product!! It actually felt soothing when I put it on. 1 pump was sufficient to cover my hands. I love that there are only 3 ingredients and it didn’t leave my hands feeling oily! I have only used it for a couple days but it has already improved my skin so much! I no longer feel like I am rubbing sandpaper on my baby’s skin when I touch him. This will be a huge help for my boys and myself through this upcoming winter too! So thankful to have tried this! I have found my new favorite moisturizer that is safe for my whole family!!
-Tiffany L.

This Baby Daily Protective Balm is awesome! I love the company and everything they stand for (they’re fighting for safer beauty which I can always get behind).  I already had some makeup items from the line but was really excited to try this balm for my son (almost 2). We live in Boston and the weather has been really dry lately so I’ve been applying the balm to some dry patches on his arms and after about 4 days they disappeared.  The Baby Balm also came at the perfect time because our whole family caught a cold. I used it on my son’s nose and on my dry lips and saw a noticeable improvement. The only downside to the product is that there are little chunks in it (probably from the all-natural ingredients) so it does not go on completely smooth but it did not bother me or my son so we can definitely live with that for the clean ingredient list.  I’m expecting a newborn in January and will definitely be adding this to our list of baby supplies to have on hand.
-Denalee M.

Baby Keeps Getting Stuffy Nose? Try These Tips!

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

When baby keeps getting stuffy nose and congestion, it can upset sleep and feeding schedules and cause baby to be very cranky.  With cold & flu season here, it’s good to be prepared. There are three products that Gugu Guru thinks are total game changers when it comes to unblocking stuffy noses and providing your baby with some much-needed relief.

Here they are in no particular order:

Fridababy Snotsucker – Winter and cold weather tend to come with a lot of congestion for babies’ little noses! It can be tricky to breathe properly when baby keeps getting stuffy nose, which can cause him or her to sleep less, and become fussy! Luckily, the NoseFrida by Fridababy is here to the rescue. The NoseFrida is a pediatrician endorsed nasal aspirator which uses use parents’ own suction to safely and effectively clear stuffy noses. The NosaFrida comes with a Natural Sea Salt and purified water specially formulated for small noses which will assist in removing all of the congestion along with the suction. This cold weather must-have items for families may seem like a wild idea, sucking your own baby’s snot, however, it is super hygienic and the disposable filters are clinically proven to prevent the transfer of mucus or bacterial germs to the snot sucker when clearing stuffy noses. Plus, it’s dishwasher safe for easy clean up! Buy Now >>

Crane Humidifier – Moist air is easier to breathe. Humidity also makes it easier to get the mucus out of your baby’s nose (which by the way, a clear nose can help a congested baby nurse more easily too.) Humidity is an effective, natural alternative to medications for cold. The Crane Humidifier is both quiet and effective. The extra humidity helps babies to breathe easier, meaning they can sleep better and eat with less frustration helping them to be better equipped to fight off a cold. Babies also do not have the ability to clear their noses on their own so the humidifier helps with this as well. Crane Humidifier’s Ultrasonic Cool Mist increases air moisture for easier breathing and a good night’s sleep. In addition to relieving cough, cold, and flu symptoms, nasal congestion, the Humidifier can help with dry cough, sinus irritation, nose bleeds, and dry skin and hair – common problems during the winter (not just for babies!) And on the topic of germs, the Crane Humidifier’s Clean Control Antimicrobial Material is proven to help reduce mold and bacteria growth up to 99.96%. Buy Now >>

Oilogic Slumber and Sleep product line – This therapeutic, solution-based brand uses 100% pure essential oil blends to safely and naturally comfort your child. The Slumber & Sleep product line includes the Vapor Bath, Calming Cream and Roll-On. At bath time, just pour the Essential Oil Vapor Bath solution into warm water so your child can breathe in the natural lavender and chamomile vapors. Then, rub the Essential Oil Calming Cream all over your child’s body to calm the senses, and finish off by applying the Essential Oil Roll-on to the back of the neck, chest and bottom of the feet. Cold Weather Babywearing – What You Should Know

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

This post on cold weather babywearing is brought to us by Linnea Catalan the Executive Director of the Baby Carrier Industry Alliance.

Winter weather brings new challenges for staying warm while still getting out and about, especially once you add a baby into the mix! The good news is that today you have more options than ever for cold weather babywearing.

Safety First
Keep your little one snug, warm and close to your chest in a properly fitting sling or carrier. The most important thing is to be mindful and never cover a baby’s face with a blanket, cover or zipped up jacket when cold weather babywearing. This is equally important in other container-type devices as well (like strollers and infant bucket seats). Covering a baby’s face makes it impossible to monitor them and can lead to suffocation or C02 rebreathing.

Also, watch your footing, especially in adverse weather conditions or if you are carrying your baby on your front and can’t see the ground below you. Be extra mindful of slip and fall hazards in icy conditions.

Cold Weather Babywearing boba

Staying Warm
You have a few different options for staying warm while cold weather babywearing. First, decide if you want outdoor gear that goes over both you and baby together or if you are wearing your carrier and baby over your jacket and dressing baby separately.

  1. You can choose sharing one layer that goes over both of you, but remember that you and baby will be sharing body heat and that the carrier also functions as an additional layer for both of you. Dress your baby as you’ve dressed yourself, making sure hands, feet and head have adequate protection. You’ll be sharing a lot of body heat so make sure you don’t overdress either! Layers are key.
  2. There is also outerwear but your options for outerwear are going to depend on your climate and activity. Here are a few options that are all meant to go over your existing carrier:
  • Fleece sweaters for two, like the Boba Babywearing Hoodie are a lightweight option.
  • Already have a coat you love? A zip in jacket panel lets you turn your existing winter jacket into a coat for two (also very useful for pregnancy!) We love the Make My Belly Fit collection as well as the Kokoala jacket extender.
  • A purpose made babywearing jacket can be a bit of investment but many parents find that it’s worth the money for convenience and fit. Many of these jackets modify for maternity use, as well as wearing it as a regular jacket. One of our absolute favorites is the Booker Coat from B&Me (they also offer a vest and adorable babywearing hat for your little.) There are also quite a few on the market that allow you to do front and back carries. We love Liliputi’s 4-in-1 Mama Coat, Diva Milano’s babywearing puffer jacket, Mamalilia’s classic cut wool jacket, and MaMidea’s entire range of babywearing garments. (Editor’s note: heads up that these last four brands are not US companies and therefore reflect a different currency. Please also double-check shipping information and costs.)

Wearing your carrier over outerwear:
Be mindful that babies don’t regulate temperature as well as adults, so dress your baby in appropriate winter layers the same way you dress yourself. You’ll want to avoid anything excessively bulky as this can be difficult to fit into a carrier properly.

Mind the gap – carriers can hike snowsuits up at the legs, exposing skin to the cold. Baby leg warmers, baby tights (for boys and girls) and wool or waterproof booties will help keep baby warm and protected.

Cold Weather Babywearing ergobaby

There are many brands of carrier covers that are meant to add an extra layer of warmth. These are a soft shell (some are waterproof, insulated, fleece-lined etc) that attach around your existing carrier and cover your baby. Some do double duty and work in strollers as well. We’ve rounded up a few options- take a look at the BABYBJÖRN cover or a microfiber versions, like Ergobaby’s winter weather cover, and Jolly Jumper’s easy to find Snuggle Cover as a start.

Don’t let the cold weather keep you inside! With a little prep, you and your little one can enjoy getting out with minimal fuss. The above options are not at all exhaustive, but should be a good start to point you in the right direction.

Handsocks:

Wintertime is the time of year that you worry most about keeping those little hands warm and cozy, right? However, it can be so hard to keep baby’s hands in baby gloves or mittens; plus, often gloves or mittens aren’t soft and cozy. Handsocks is the perfect solution! Handsocks, otherwise known as happiness for little hands, began when Virginia Mom Casey Burke Bunn forgot to pack mittens and layers for her daughter, she used a pair of ski socks to keep her hands and arms warm….and the idea for Handsocks was born! What started as a way to keep little hands warm without the use of velcro or buttons has turned into something much more. Parents are using Handsocks to protect their newborn from scratching themselves, stop babies and little ones from irritating infant eczema, skin conditions and wounds , plus unexpected casts/ports in the NICU. That’s truly amazing! More than just a glove, Handsocks features a unique mitten base which rolls up the arm to become a sleeve, giving warmth and a perfect fit; the sleeve-like effect keeps the Handsocks on without tightness or using Velcro or straps. No more lost mittens and, the minky-fabric material is like a little blankie your baby can hold from their earliest days. With adorable styles to choose from, don’t forget to stock up on your Handsocks this year and for any winter babies you know. Use code GUGUGURU15 for 15% off your order!

When it comes to keeping smells at bay, we always turn to the award winning diaper pail from Ubbi. It’s no wonder we listed Ubbi’s diaper pail as a nursery must-have essential.  The Ubbi Diaper Pail is made of powder-coated steel to achieve maximum odor control. Baby-Led Feeding by Jenna Helwig:

Winter is a great time to hunker down and cook up a storm, but how can you get baby involved in this process? We’re so excited about a new book, Baby-Led Feeding, coming out this March from Jenna Helwig, author and food editor at Parents magazine. Jenna’s first book, Real Baby Food is one of our must-have essentials for starting solids, and a favorite of Foodie Mom and chef, Nikki Dinki. Baby-Led Feeding explores the concept of baby-led weaning, which is the concept of focusing on feeding your baby a variety of healthy, wholesome solid foods, rather than relying solely on purees. With more than 100 ideas and recipes, this book is a must have for all parents who love to cook. This bright, photo-driven book includes chapters on the benefits of this approach, when and how to get started, essential safety and nutrition guidelines, frequently asked questions, basic fruit and vegetable prep, more complex finger foods, and family meals. All recipes have been reviewed by a registered dietitian and include nutrition information to ensure a healthy mealtime.

Thank you to Ubbi, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Handsocks, Pediped Footwear, Magic Merlin Sleepsuit, ergoPouch for making this sponsored post possible.

Hygge Baby Registry Ideas

by Gugu Guru

The Gugu Guru team is obsessed with a new concept this winter, “hygge” – have you heard of it? Hygge, pronounced HOO-gah, is the Danish word for cozy, and as the New York Times said in their recent piece on Hygge, “It is also a national manifesto, nay, an obsession expressed in the constant pursuit of homespun pleasures involving candlelight, fires, fuzzy knitted socks, porridge, coffee, cake and other people.” This cozy phenomenon is becoming more popular for families in America, and what’s a more hygge concept than a warm and cozy baby? We rounded up our favorite hygge baby products to help you get hygge with it! As the New York Times stated, “How to get hygge? Go home and stay there, preferably in your hyggekrog — a.k.a. “cozy nook” — wrapped in a blanket, drinking a cup of coffee…” We think all parents can roll with that idea!
