Great Mom Ideas: Binka Bear

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

As any toddler mom or dad knows, it can be a really emotional struggle to take the pacifier or binky away when they no longer need it – but one mom decided to turn the struggle into a delightful story and accompanying bear – it’s no surprise that we’re fans of mompreneurs over here at Gugu Guru, so we’re thrilled to introduce you to Binka Bear! We absolutely love this idea, and especially because it really does start a family tradition about handing over the pacifier! Check out all the info below and if you like the idea, head to their Kickstarter and help make this mama’s dream a reality!

Finally, a No-Muss, No-Fuss- and Dare, We Say Magical- Way to Wean Your Child From Their Pacificers! Let Binka Bear replace your child’s favorite comfort item with a cuddly plush toy as they adventure along the journey of Binka Bear and the Magic of Willowspring, helping your child to lose the paci once and for all.

Step One: Prepare!

You’ve made the decision: it’s time for the pacifier TO GO! What now? Introduce Binka Bear and use the included Prep Guide to begin preparing your little one (and yourself) for losing the pacifier for good. The prep guide will include a couple of simple steps to make the process more effective before Binka Bear does his “magic”.

Step Two: Read the Story

Set special time aside to read “Binka Bear and The Magic of Willowspring” to help your child discover how Binka must wait for his magic to arrive- and how only your child can help make it happen by giving their beloved pacifiers to their new friend for permanent safekeeping near by, but out of their mouth!

Step Three: Give Pacifiers to Binka Bear

Watch as your child excitedly shares the magic with Binka Bear by sealing up to two pacifiers within his or her new best friend’s specially designed pouches located in each of his hands!

Eco-Friendly Ways to Recycle Baby Clothing and More!

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

With April being the month to celebrate all things Earth-related, we wanted to share a few companies with you who are helping parents recycle old clothing and accessories by giving them a new home and purpose. Don’t forget to check out our affordable eco-friendly baby registry and post-consumer recycled baby registry!

Swoondle Society: It seems as though babies and kids run through clothes faster than we can buy them, so what’s a parent to do when they’re stuck with a ton of wrong-sized or outgrown baby clothes? Our editor got to try Swoondle Society, which is a trade-based second hand shopping experience. You sign up for a Swoondle Membership, receive a pre-paid large mailing-bag in the mail, and fill it with all of the clothes you can’t use anymore! Everything is valued in Levels 1-5 and are available for trade-only.  This makes it fair – you can only take out levels based on what levels you send. You receive the same level as your item will be listed in the shop.  Swoondle plays the judge to make trading easy and fair. Our editor says, “I sent in a bunch of Gap Kids and Old Navy boy’s clothing in great condition; I ended up picking 10 new items for my boys, including a gorgeous rain jacket, the navy blue Old Navy long sleeved shirt in great condition and an adorable ringer t-shirt for my younger son! It was easy to do, and if you’re someone who likes to shop online for your kid’s clothing, I highly recommend a membership.” You can request a kit to try it out for no fee (you get 5 free swaps before you have to chose a membership plan), and it’s a great way to recycle those old clothes and get brand new-to-you clothing!

Moon Canyon Kids: The Moon Canyon Kids subscription box is a monthly mix of vintage and modern items, styled for your child. In each box you’ll find three (or more) pieces, often including a new item from a cool Los Angeles brand. Plus a new accessory surprise! It’s an easy, affordable, eco-friendly way to outfit your kiddo. All you have to do is choose your child’s size, and if you want for a girl, boy, or unisex (love that they have this option!). And then, simply wait for your box full of clothing to arrive. We’re fans of both eco-friendly recycling of clothing and shopping small, so we’re over the moon (pun intended) that Moon Canyon Kids offers both in one box! It’s super fun to see what comes in the mail, as often times it’s not necessarily what you’d pick out for your kids, but incredibly adorable, nonetheless.

Stitches by Natalie: What do you do with all of those baby clothes and blankets you no longer use, but still want to save? Stitches by Natalie transforms all of your precious baby blankets and clothing into adorable stuffed animals! It’s super easy to send in your blanket, simply pick which animal you want to transform the blanket into, and Natalie hand creates the animal for you, as well as embroiders your child’s information on the animal. So, go look in the back of those drawers of yours and pull out those precious baby blankets to be made into a family heirloom which will last forever.  Check out some other items from Stitches by Natalie, too.

Belly Bandit Upcycle Program: Belly Bandit, a favorite of Sara Haley Fit, has an amazing upcycle program we’re excited to tell you about. Belly Bandit are firm believers in giving back and paying it forward.  It’s simple, just send Belly Bandit your used Belly Bandit Belly Wraps and in return you’ll receive a one-time coupon for use on any of their products! We’ll in turn take those used wraps and donate them to Trash 4 Teaching! T4T, a division of Two Bit Circus Foundation, rescues clean, safe, inspiring items that local businesses discard in abundance, and make them available to teachers, after school providers, non-profits and individuals. They support hands-on learning through STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) with professional development workshops, material resource carts and classroom collaborations. They offer a variety of hands-on creativity and collaboration experiences for all ages.

Product Discovery: Bumkins

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Let’s face it, childhood is messy! Between the eating, playing, learning, and overall stickiness of childhood…it seems like everyone is covered in a mess by the end of the day. That’s why we’re so excited to introduce you to Bumkins. Bumkins, originally founded as a cloth diaper company, has now expanded into toddlerhood and beyond with their adorable bibs, bags and other products all designed to be fun and family-friendly. Check out some of our favorite product picks for all the messy (but cute) toddlers in your life below.

Spills, drips, splats – this looks like a job for the SuperBib! Now with capes for added fun! Bumkins’ award-winning, best-selling SuperBib takes baby from first foods all the way through the toddler years, foiling nasty stains along the way! Made from Bumkins’ lightweight, easy wipe, machine washable waterproof fabric, SuperBibs are both comfortable and durable. Sized to fit ages 6 to 24 months, these bibs feature a back shoulder Velcro closure for a quick, adjustable and tug-proof fit. With a handy catch-all pocket for containing spills, this bib is a great addition to any mealtime!

The Sleeved Bib saves one outfit at a time with the award-winning protection of Bumkins’ lightweight, easy wipe, machine washable waterproof fabric. Generously sized, and both comfortable and durable, the Sleeved Bib can fit babies from 6-24 months by adjusting sleeve length with the elasticized cuff. Use the back tie closure for a secure and custom fit. With a generously sized, catch-all pocket, this hard working bib is great at containing spills and reducing loads of laundry!

The Bumkins Grip Dish is a must-have for babies and toddlers of all ages! With a strong suction base, plates thrown on the floor are a thing of the past! It is great for little ones learning to self-feed, or more experienced eaters using utensils; made from 100% food grade silicone that is durable, stain resistant, and doesn’t harbor bacteria. Perfectly sized for toddler portions; each section holds approximately 4 oz. Easy to clean! Either hand wash or put in the dishwasher and fits most high chair trays.

Bumkins Splat Mats have you covered!  Generously sized and made from Bumkins signature, easy wipe, waterproof fabric, these mats protect floors, tables and more from spills and stains. Wipe clean or machine wash and the mat dries in minutes. Sized 42″ x 42″ for maximum coverage.

Here’s what Gugu Guru mama, Shana, has to say:

Unlike most toddlers, my daughter is not a fan of carbs – unless, of course it’s rice. Rice that gets into every crease, crevice and fold of my daughter, which I can handle, but have you ever cleaned rice off the floor ? It sticks, it smears, and it’s…everywhere. Enter the Bumkins Splat Mat.
I’m a huge fan of products with long longevity – convertible cribs, 3-in-1 potties, diaper pails that become stylish wastebaskets. This is why I love the Bumkin Splat Mat. It’s taken us from the messy days of baby led weaning to the “throw your plate on the floor” days of early toddlerhood to our current arts and crafts days. It wipes up easily and also holds up well in the washer (be sure to air dry it). Bonus for all of the stylish prints that it’s available in!

Holiday 2017: Toddler Gift Guide

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

-Sponsored Post-

It’s that time of year again: holiday gift guides for all! This year we’re kicking off our gift guide with awesome gifts for the toddlers in your life. We tried to mix it up between fun gifts, and some gifts which are useful, too! Which one of these would Santa bring your little one?

Trend Lab, character chairs: We’re huge fans of seating made for toddlers, as it teaches independence and is also a super cute addition to any playroom or bedroom. These Trend Lab character chairs are pretty much as cute as they come. These super soft plush chairs are ideal for snuggling, relaxing, and reading. They come in a variety of styles, such as Moose, Elephant, Dragon (dragons are very popular this holiday season!), Lion, Giraffe, Panda, and Tiger – so you’re sure to find a special character chair for the special little lady or guy in your life. These chairs are super lightweight, which makes them easy to move around the house, even for a toddler.  Use code TLCCHAIR for 15% off all Trend Lab Children’s Plush Character Chairs on www.tlcbabies.com only. Promo code expiration date: December 31, 2017.

Orbit Labels by Inchbug: We’ve sang the praises of Orbit Labels before, and we happen to think they are a perfect gift for a toddler – whether for a stocking stuffer, or a special gift for a little one who is starting to recognize their own name! Orbit Labels are an ideal gift for toddlers because they are utilitarian, yet also super cute and fun. These non-adhesive and reusable labels are a must-have for any kiddo going to daycare or school; these labels are easily washable and go on sippy cups, bottles, thermoses, and more – and because your child’s name is engraved in the label, their name can never be washed off. Have fun picking the color, icon, and text for each of your children and never mix up a sippy cup or bottle again!

Lark Adventurewear: Toddlers are known for their sense of adventure, and what better to dress them in for an adventure, than Lark Adventurewear? Lark Adventurewear is known for their innovative fabric, created out of a special bamboo and cotton blended knit that is breathable, wicks moisture and is super soft, which means ultimate comfort for your little one. Their activewear is Oeko-Tex® 100 Certified, whose standards ensure that our fabric is made with environmentally friendly processing. Lark Adventurewear also features easy-open tops and bottom-to-top zippers to make clothing and diaper changes as easy as possible. We’re huge fans of all of their clothing and they are releasing long sleeved bodysuits and t-shirts (perfect for those Fall and Winter hikes with baby!) mid-December, so don’t forget to check back and snag yours. See our full review of Lark Adventurewear here, too.

Perry Mackin, Toddler Backpack: Toddlers love to put “things in things” and then carry them around the house. Seriously. Which is why we always suggest toddler sizes backpacks as gifts when it comes to toddlers! We’re loving the Perry Mackin Harness Backpack for toddler this year. Coming in blue, cream, red, yellow, and gold – you’re sure to find your toddler’s favorite color – and parents will love these backpacks because they feature a top grab handle and the secure easy-to-attach rein, to keep all walks around the block safe and fun. These mini backpacks are plastic with a zipper closure, and adjustable pack straps. We think your toddler will love wearing the backpack day and night, and we love the mod and streamlined look of the bag!

B.Box Diaper Caddy: Another great storage piece for toddlers is B.Box’s Diaper Caddy – this is such a multipurpose gift! Whether your toddler is actually still in diapers or not, the B.Box Diaper Caddy will easily grow with your family. This light and portable diaper changing station ensures you have everything you need for diaper changing wherever you are around the home; it’s also great for toilet training, as you can store pull-ups, wipes, and even some reward stickers. We love how compact this caddy is; a great space saver for apartment living and ideal for two-story homes. When baby is done with diapers, it makes a great art caddy or home/toy organizer, just pop a tissue box where the wipes were. Plus, it’s safe to have around babies and toddlers because it is BPA, Phthalates and PVC free.

Edushape Magic Brix Giant Set: Our top toy pick for toddlers is one which falls into every popular category this holiday season – it is STEM related, gender-neutral – and even fun for adults too! The set includes 360 flexible and soft bristle Magic Brix that interlock when pushed together and stay attached until they are pulled apart.  Magic Brix attach from practically every side and are ideal for any toddler who wants to give shape to his imagination!  The set features a wide variety of colorful blocks and shapes to help develop creativity, fine motor skills, logic and reasoning, and socialization when playing with others.  Edushape is a 35 year old educational toy company that originally catered to pre-schools and soon their skill-enhancing products became consumer favorites. You can see some fun Edushape creations on their Instagram and Facebook.

Top 5 Must-Have Essentials: Toddler Diaper Bag

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

One of the things that no one talks about when you become a new parent is the evolution of the diaper bag. You will start out, a worried and confused new parent, with a packed-to-the-gills diaper bag of infant gear. Over time, as you learn what you actually need for baby, your diaper bag will become less cluttered, and then slowly, as your baby grows to a toddler, all of the items you used to need (burp cloth, pacifier) will slowly disappear and make room for toddler necessities. We rounded up 5 essential toddler diaper bag must haves! What necessities for your toddler do you always carry?

Baby K’tan Smart Gear Diaper Bag: Did you know that Baby K’tan has an amazing diaper bag, too? Coming in chevron (pictured), black, or dandelion print, this diaper bag is a must-have for life with a busy toddler. What makes this bag so different and just so genius is that it includes a built-in wetbag with antibacterial lining and water-tight zipper as well as antibacterial pockets that kill germs and odor causing bacteria. That is perfect for a potty-training toddler, or any kid who loves to “do it my way!” and spills all over themselves (can you hear us sighing from there?). Plus, the K’tan diaper bag has 12 functional pockets to store all your toddler’s toys, snacks, essentials and more.

Junkless Chewy Granola Bars: Speaking of snacks, it is literally a rule of life that you cannot leave home without snacks when you’re out with a toddler. Our team is a big fan of the Junkless Granola bars when it comes to feeding the little ones. Coming in peanut butter, chocolate chip, strawberry, or cinnamon, they have no artificial flavors, colors or preservatives, no hydrogenated oils, no high fructose corn syrup, 0g trans fat; and what’s more, they have less sugar than many other leading granola bars – only 5g per 1.1 oz. bar. Our editor’s kids got the chance to try these and loved having them for breakfast, too!

MAM Baby Sports Cup: Another thing about toddlers you should know is that they are always “sooooo thirsty, mommy!” Make sure you’re all ready to go with a MAM Sports Cup full of water. The innovative MAM Sports Cup opens automatically for drinking and does not have to be opened by hand. A patented valve system ensures that the cup remains leak-proof but is always ready for drinking. This cup also features a leak-proof cap that help keep bottles clean when not in use.

B.Box For Kids Snack Pack: Yes, more snacks. We told you so! Pretty much a toddler diaper bag is 50% snacks and 50% ways to clean up after snack. With two separate compartments that seal separately, you’re able to serve different foods. Also great for crackers and dip, little sandwich shapes and berries. Fab for all ages and stages. Handy spoon stows away in the lid. BPA, Phthalates and PVC free.

Little Giraffe Plush Toy: Every toddler needs a plush buddy to take on their journeys, and we love the sweet plush animals from Little Giraffe.   Made from the same cuddly Luxe Dot fabric Little Giraffe blankets are known for, but this time with squeezable cuteness! The giant ears and curled trunk is sure to delight any toddler boy or girl. Coming in pink and blue, this little elephant, known fondly as Little E, will become the buddy you’re little buddy has always wanted.

On the Go Snacks for Busy Moments with Kids

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Our editor in chief is a huge fan of the Whole30 program as a wonderful way to reset your mind and body; a few months back we posted about doing a Whole30 with the whole family. We also had the chance to interview the mama behind the Whole 30’s Healthy Mama, Happy Baby program, Stephanie Greunke – the Healthy Mama, Happy Baby program and Instagram is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to all topics breastfeeding, pregnancy, eating clean, and even mental health. We are so excited to have teamed up with the Whole30 Mamas again – and this time all about healthy snacks for busy families!

Summer is winding down, which means you’re probably gearing up for back to school. We know how busy things can get in the frenzy of packing lunches, school pick ups, and work deadlines. Today we’ve partnered with our friends at Whole30 Healthy Mama, Happy Baby to bring you some healthy snack ideas for on the go!

Pre-made snacks:

  • Epic bites: think beef jerky, but with clean ingredients and in bite-sized form
  • RX bar kids: clean ingredients and 7 grams of protein in kid-friendly sizes and flavors
  • Serenity Kids pouches: purees that include protein, veggies, and healthy fats in easy-to-grab pouches

Easy whole foods:

  • Mini cucumbers
  • Mini peppers
  • Baby carrots (Serve any veggies with Wholly guacamole snack packs or a pre-filled tupperware of Tessemae’s ranch dressing)
  • Raw nuts (toddler-friendly, but not so baby friendly!)

Minimal prep snacks:

  • Lunch meat roll ups (clean lunch meat – we like Applegate Farms –  + cheese + condiment if you like, rolled up and held together with a toothpick)
  • Cut up fruit and add a small tupperware of natural almond butter + honey
  • Hard boiled eggs dipped in Primal Kitchen mayo

Interested in hearing even more advice recommendations from the Whole30 Healthy Mama, Happy Baby team? This month they are focusing on all things baby and toddler feeding! Recently they wrote about their personal experiences with introducing solids and how their now toddlers eat. They’ve also compiled a list of their favorites plus recommendations from their community on Instagram for baby and toddler feeding over on their blog: HMHB Loves: Baby and Toddler Feeding.

Getting Ready For Feeding Time with Kizingo

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

-Sponsored Post-

It is always exciting when a baby transitions from eating baby food, to grabbing their own food, and eventually using utensils on their own. However, teaching a child to properly eat with utensils is not always easy. Luckily, Kizingo has come up with a new way to introduce using utensils to toddlers and kids.

Founded by two moms, the mission of Kizingo is to help children learn to love to eat, and therefore, learn to love mealtime, as it is such a special time for families.  The name Kizingo means curved in Swahili and honors that time of exploration and discovery. Learning to feed yourself is difficult, but it’s so important and Kizingo believes that kids should have the tools they need to do this, successfully, for themselves.

What makes Kizingo spoons special? Kizingo encourages independence, as their curved form is easy for children to grip and therefore, children will be eager to hold them to eat. The short, wide handles are easy to hold, especially for small hands which are just learning to grasp well. They do not contain BPA, PVC, lead or Phthalates, and they are microwave and dishwasher save. They’re also designed and manufactured in America!

As baby will be learning to feed themselves before you know it, we highly recommend adding Kizingo to your baby registry! The Kizingo products are designed to promote successful self-feeding, giving confidence to parents and children. Babies and toddlers learning to feed themselves can get frustrated and most utensils are not well designed for how toddlers want to hold and use them. As a result, parents often take over feeding which can have unintended consequences. Kizingo spoons are curved to work with the way children hold utensils, making it easer for kids to successfully do it themselves. Help instill a sense of independence in your toddlers with the Kizingo spoon; a little independence goes a long way in toddlerhood, and anything to make meal time a little easier is always a plus in our book.

Thank you to Kizingo for making this sponsored post possible.

IKEA Kids Picks on Amazon

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

We have some earth-shattering news for you all: Ikea is now on Amazon. What!? To be clear, not every (or even close to every) item from Ikea is on Amazon, but a lot of the smaller, easy-to-ship items are available on Amazon, and with Prime, it’s free shipping. And yes, this is amazing news all around, because while we love Ikea and their meatballs (and ice cream), it’s almost undeniable that an Ikea trip with a little one in tow is going to end in disaster (just ask our friend Jordan Reid about that one). So, cuddle up in your pajamas and start shopping at Ikea from the comfort of your own home. Here are some of our top picks you can order on Amazon right now!

CIRKUSTÄLT Children’s tent; IKEA Children’s Kids Table & 2 Chairs Set Furniture; Ikea MALA Easel; IKEA BEKVAM Wooden Utility Step; Flisat Children’s Book Display; Forsiktig Children’s Stool

The IKEA Poäng chair is a budget pick of ours for a comfortable chair for the nursery. It’s neutral in color (comes in a few colors), easy to match in any room of the house when you’re done with it in the nursery, and really good for a parent’s back as they rock and bounce a baby to sleep.

Need some IKEA inspo?

  • A great list from Amanda Macy Hall on IKEA budget finds for baby under $50
  • 10 things your baby needs at IKEA from The Wise Baby
  • IKEA Montessori children’s finds from How We Montessori
