Real Mom Reviews: Mountain Buggy Duet for Multiples

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

When it comes to finding products for twins, we love when real moms get the chance to review products and help out other multiple-mamas-to-be on their baby registry journey. The ultra chic Mountain Buggy Duet Stroller was featured in our Spring Fashion Gift Guide because it truly is so stylish – but there are so many reasons any parent of two truly needs this unique stroller! Our editor’s childhood best friend recently had adorable twin boys and was looking for a stroller she could easily get outside with while wrangling both boys. We were excited to have her try out the Mountain Buggy Duet – here’s what she thought of it below!

This is the Mountain Buggy Duet Luxury in Herringbone and interestingly enough, the Duet Stroller is the slimmest double stroller on the market, it’s even slimmer than some single strollers! Parents love the Mountain Buggy Duet for its slim frame and ability to be folded up easily.

This luxury stroller comes with Aeromaxx wheels (enjoy the ride of air filled tires but without the maintenance), a matching diaper bag, and changing mat, and a 3 year warranty! Style and function are perfectly joined with the Mountain Buggy Duet Luxury Stroller.

Here’s what our twin mama had to say about it:

I love the Mountain Buggy, and more importantly, so do my boys! It’s a lot less bulky than other twin strollers I’ve used, and the steering is comfortable and smooth. It’s actually quite narrow for a side-by-side! The leather touches give it a luxurious feel and the 4-buckle harnesses keep the boys secure. There’s plenty of storage in the base of the stroller, which is essential for a twin mama on the go. There are tons of small but thoughtful features that make a huge difference – a magnet that holds the peek-a-boo flap in place and a wrist strap to keep the stroller securely in my hands.

For more information or to buy now, visit Little Folks NYC.

Gugu Guru received the Mountain Buggy Duet Luxury for review. All opinions are our own.

What’s New on Gugu: May 22, 2019

by Abby Ludwig Leave a Comment

This week I have found some products that have excellent longevity. They will survive through your first, second, third, and beyond. They are even great options for life with multiples (I can speak from first-hand experience!). I also love the way these brands are dedicated to creating high quality products. From a mom of twin toddlers, THANK YOU!

For loads of our other favorites, please check out our Explore page!

Maxi Cosi Magellan Max: This convertible car seat could truly be the only car seat you ever own! While I love the Magellan, the Max has some added features that will make your life significantly easier. They have added their “EZ In/Out harness system” which is revolutionary when trying to buckle in a moving toddler. The seat also has a variety of recline positions and a no-rethread harness. Safe for babies 5-120 lbs, this seat will go from rear-facing infant seat to forward high back booster.

Göbe Kids Snack Spinner: Although not available until July, this new snack spinner will help ensure that your toddlers are eating from all the food groups! Simply fill each of the sections with snacks and watch your little one’s independence grow. Great for picky eaters too! They are BPA and PVC free and dishwasher safe.

Mochi Toys: Although not new to Gugu Guru, People Toy Co.’s Mochi line is perfect for any growing baby. Their teethers are non-toxic, made from rice, and easy to clean! We love how these hold up to months and months of constant use by babies and toddlers of all ages! Complete with instruments, wearable teethers, blocks and more these are the perfect unique gift for any family!

Plae Shoes: Plae has taken the importance of ‘Play’ and turned it into an amazing shoe line for kids (and adults!). Plae shoes are extremely high-quality and hold up to days at the beach, park, and pool! They are great for teaching independence to toddlers who want to put on/take off their own shoes too. We love their unique colors, encouraging all family members to get out there and ‘Plae!’

Toki Mats: Toki Mats is a mom-founded brand (see others featured on the blog this week!) made of high quality foam and a washable cover. The mat will fold when not in use and the covers are washable and interchangeable. It is also a great size, even for multiples. Plus the prints are fun and trendy enough to keep out in your living room!

Please note that these opinions are 100% my own and I have not received any products in exchange for placement in What’s New on Gugu!

Spring has finally arrived for much of the country! For those of you in the Midwest, like myself, it really felt like we might not ever reach Spring. However, it has slowly (yet surely) arrived! Here are a number of products to help you continue doing what you do best; care for your kiddos! For loads of our other favorites, please check out our Explore page!

Loulou Lollipop Royal Gifts: Now that Meghan and Harry have welcomed their little prince, we want to make sure you’re appropriately stocked up! Loulou Lollipop has two excellent gift options for the ‘royal minis’ in your life. Both the Castle Muslin Swaddle and the London Muslin Quilt are made from high quality muslin, which softens with each wash. Easy to take on the go and wash when needed, these will last forever!

Belli Skincare: You’ve probably heard us mention Belli Skincare before, because it is SO amazing! We love that they use only high quality items in their products, which are safe for pregnancy, nursing, and beyond. Belli Skincare is free from harsh chemicals, synthetic fragrances, artificial dyes, parabens, gluten, phthalates and preservatives. Check out some of our favorites, including the Stretchmark Minimizing Cream, the Elasticity Belly Oil, and the All Day Moisture Lotion.

Dreambaby Strollerbuddy StrollAway Over the Door Hanger: Families who are tight on space often complain that they have to make stroller sacrifices so that they can safely store their stroller when not in use. Look no further! With a 50lb weight limit, Dreambaby’s Strollerbudy StrollAway will hold keep nearly any stroller safely contained. While not in use, it will even fold flat to stay out of the way!

Bblüv Sölar and Sunkitö: Two great products for fun in the sun from bblüv! Sölar are an excellent choice for sunglasses for your baby, toddler, or small child. Available in three fun colors, these flexible sunglasses will protect your little one’s eyes from harmful UV rays. Pair your glasses with the Sunkitö tent, which will keep your little one safe while taking a break from your busy day outside. We love that this tent will protect you from the sun, sand, and mosquitoes for snacks, naps, or quiet time!

Summersalt’s Mama + Minis Swimsuit Collection: Not only are their products adorable but we love Summersalt’s celebration of women and diversity! Their new Mama + Minis line is meant to encourage moms to spend that time outside and in the water with their littles! Plus the pops of color are refreshing and fun!

What’s New on Gugu: April 24, 2019

This week’s new finds highlight some great Earth Day friendly selections. Reusable food pouches, baby food makers, and food grade silicone bottles are all great new items for the eco-friendly family. You will also notice some pop culture trends popping up this week. Baby Shark anyone? For loads of our other favorites, please check out our Explore page!

Baby Brezza Food Makers and Reusable Pouches: Earth Day celebrations always remind me to make smart choices regarding the products we use in everyday life. Baby Brezza has continued to make the ‘homemade baby food game’ a reality with easy to use machines and reusable pouches! Simply pop your favorite fruit and/or veggies in the container (love the Glass for eco-friendly or the new Deluxe) and watch them cook and blend with ease. Pour any delicious mixture into the reusable pouch and you’re good to go! Added bonus – the pouches are top-rack dishwasher safe!

Hatch Maternity x Nordstrom: As we (not so) patiently await the arrival of Baby Sussex, it has become much easier to attain our own ‘Markle Sparkle!’ The new collaboration between Hatch Maternity and Nordstrom highlights items from a brand we love so much. Pair together classic tops, pants, and dresses to keep things comfy and chic!

Baby Shark Toys and Walker: The ‘Baby Shark’ craze doesn’t seem to be leaving us anytime soon. Wowwee, the brains behind ‘Fingerlings’ continue to create engaging toys for our little ones. We have a love/hate relationship with their line of singing shark characters, which will instantly burn that catchy tune into your brain! Plus, coming in October is their newest toy, a brand new Baby Shark inspired walker for baby.

Boon NURSH Silicone Bottles: Another Earth Day find, the Boon NURSH bottle system utilizes a special bagged venting system that is reusable. Ideal for preventing gas, easily squeeze the silicone pouch to remove any excess air before feeding your babe. Plus, all parts are dishwasher safe!

Skip Hop Greenwich Convertible Hip Pack: With Mother’s Day around the corner, we love this sleek take on the fanny pack. Great for travel, we love this new hands-free accessory to hold the essentials. Pair with a diaper bag for an excellent gift for any mama-to-be!

Please note that these opinions are 100% my own. I have not received any products in exchange for placement in What’s New on Gugu!

Why “Me Time” Matters

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

This week’s post on “Me Time” is from our good friend Natalie Diaz founder of Twiniversity -the world’s leading support network for multiple birth families.

I consider myself a lucky person. I’m surrounded by my twinnies, hubby, extended family, and a bunch of wild friends that help me make good (and sometimes bad) choices.

One thing that everyone in my circle can agree on: I’m HORRIBLE at taking time for myself. You should know that things are bad when your mother-in-law says, “Nat, you need to do more for yourself. Why don’t you take a break and go to a movie?”

Don’t get me wrong, I try. I try to take breaks and have a cup of coffee, but it seems like there is always something to be done. A load of laundry, dishes in the sink, bills to pay, school projects to buy supplies for, errands to run, etc. AND when I do find time for myself? The guilt! The guilt gets me. I know I’m not the only one. “Me Time” should not just mean going to the bathroom with the door closed. We should be leading by example and teaching our kids how to balance their own lives instead of showing them how to run around like a chicken without a head.

I can’t be the only one whose temper is a little shorter because I’ve felt like I’ve had a child at my feet all day, or I feel like I’m being pulled in 12 directions on a regular basis. Let’s face it, that’s parenthood. BUT, we need to put on our own oxygen mask first like the flight attendants tell us during a flight safety briefing. We honestly can’t help others unless we help ourselves first.

Today I’m going back to basics. I’ve taken a pledge that for the next 30 days, I will take 10 minutes for myself each and every day. Maybe it will be in the morning after the kids are off to school. Maybe it will be in the afternoon and I’ll actually stop for a real lunch instead of eating at the kitchen counter to just get some extra energy from whatever nutrients I can scrounge up. Maybe it will be in the night, when the eye of the storm arrives and the kids are frustrated with each other over an unfair distribution of chores, or when my husband walks in and dog is running in circles, and the phone is ringing, and the TV is three levels too loud, and the dishwasher is clanging again….AHHHHH!!! Yeah, you see where this is going.

So for the next 30 days (yes, through the holidays), I’m going to find 10 minutes a day to do the following things. This is just my top 5 by the way. I honestly think that I can do it. That’s 70 minutes a week! That’s a heck of a lot of time. I’m so excited.

1. Sit and do nothing. Pop some earplugs in, sit in my bedroom and try to focus on nothing but the sound of my beating heart.

2. Pet my dog more. My beast Betty is one giant mutt. 109lbs of loveable jerk that I need to just pet more and maybe smooch on her tiny black nose.

3. Read a book. Remember those? I remember when I was younger and my mom took me to a bookstore to buy the latest edition of “The Babysitters Club”. Those were such great days. I bought THREE books (yup, over ambitions Nat talking here). An American Marriage by Tayari Jones, Dumplin’ by Julie Murphy and Assassination Vacation by Sarah Vowell. Will I finish them? No idea. Will I get past page 3 of each? That’s more likely.

4. While I’d like to spend my 10 minutes totally disconnected from technology, I also like to listen to podcasts. I found a new one that I’m going to jump into. Dr. Death! It sounds so dark, and it so is! I’ve been enjoying podcasts as a secondary activity. They are on as I’m driving or walking to the subway or whatnot, but I do love ‘em. I want to take some time for me and just enjoy them.

5. About a year ago I started crocheting. I’d like to learn a new stitch a week with my 10 minutes a day. I wish I had more time to dedicate to crocheting, but it seems like most days get away from me. Maybe my extra 10 minutes of me time will light a fire under me to try something new.

Now it’s your turn. What are your top 5 things you’d like to do if you found some spare time? Forget “spare time”, take it! Take 10 minutes for yourself daily for the next 30 days. Will you feel better? Will you yell less? Will you be calmer? LIVE BY EXAMPLE! Leave the guilt at the door and find a minute for you. I’m not suggesting you run off on a weekend to Mexico with your girlfriends. But 10 minutes a day? you can do it.

Natalie Diaz is the Pied Piper of twin families around the globe. Founding Twiniversity — the world’s leading support network for multiple birth families — in 2009, she’s become the global influencer for this small niche community. Reaching over a million families a week through Twiniversity’s Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, and YouTube channels, moms and dads of twins flock to Twiniversity to find resources, ask questions, explore new products, and find community and support from other twin parents. Natalie is a true connector, bringing parents from all walks of life together, breaking past cultural differences, to share in the highs and lows of parenting twins. Natalie’s book, “What To Do When You’re Having Two” is a global bestseller in Twins & Multiples Parenting.

Preparing for Multiples: Product Picks and Tips

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

One of the most asked questions on our social media is “how can I prepare for twins/triplets?! What do I need?!” Don’t worry, mama – we have your back! We rounded up some of our favorite items for moms of twins, and polled our baby planners to see what they always recommend for new families of multiples, too. Anything here you recommend and don’t see? Let us know in the comments or on our Facebook page. We asked our Instagram moms and dads what twin products they suggested, you can check out their answers here.

So, what do our baby planners suggest parents of multiples add to their registry? And, what tips do they have for new parents of multiples?

Amber + Kimmie of Your Milk Shoppe:

  • Product must have: Our number one rec for twin moms is the Weego Baby Carrier. We have a strong relationship with the local Moms of Multiples chapters in the Upstate and this product continues to come up as “the life saver.”
  • Best tip: Their needs will constantly compete, but you’re only one person. Some days you’ll feel like a total rockstar, and other days you won’t ever find your rhythm… and that’s OK. Be easy on yourself. The essentials: baby carrier, stroller, car seat – make sure they’re lightweight and make your life easier,  not harder!
Jessica of The Birth & Baby Company:
  • Product must have: Baby Jogger City Select Stroller
  • Best tip: If you can afford to hire a postpartum doula, do it. Or ask friends and family to help out by creating a sign up sheet for things you need help with.

Victoria Zimmerman of Aspen Baby Planners:

  • Product must have: Baby Bjorn Soft or Bliss Bouncer with Googly Eye Toy Bar – this bouncy seat is great for soothing fussy babies and a must have for feeding more than one baby at once (and with its simple and adjustable recline options, you can easily go from a more upright feeding position straight into a reclined resting position without having to take baby out!). Added bonus: it folds flat in an instant making it ideal for slipping under the couch when your house feels over run with 2x the baby gear! (See more below on the Bouncer Bliss!)
  • Best tip: Just because you have 2 hands doesn’t mean you should always be able to handle 2 babies at once. It’s okay if one is fussing while you’re taking care of their sibling.  They’ll learn each others noises, learn to sleep through one another’s fussing, and even learn to be patient and trust that you’ll always meet their needs – even if it takes a few minutes longer (this is especially true if you have MORE than two babies!). Take deep belly breaths when you feel overwhelmed and remind yourself that there is no such thing as a perfect parent – your job is just to be good and kind and to love your babies, whatever that looks like!
 Victoria Facelli of Durham Lactation:
  • Product must have: My Breast Friend Pillow; there is just no better twin nursing pillow. It is nice and firm so you can set two babies on it and latch them one at a time. I joke that it is the worlds largest fanny pack.
  • Best tips: 1. Reach out for help. A prenatal lactation visit can help you make a plan for feeding your babies. In addition to there being more babies to feed they are usually born preterm. Even if they are considered term for twins, babies born before 38 weeks have a hard time getting started with feedings. 2. Get a postpartum doula. A postpartum doula is a step above a night nurse or family and neighbor help because they can help set up systems and teach you tricks of the trade like: how to set up 2 babies for bath time, how to pick up two crying babies at once, how to set up your van to accommodate your twins and older child. All things I did for families back when I was a postpartum doula. Even if you can only afford a few sessions, put a link to a local postpartum doula on your Gugu Guru registry and ask for it as a gift from family and friends. The things you will learn and the extra set of hands is just so valuable.

Valerie Trumbrower of Nurturing Doula:

  • Product must have: My number one product recommendation for twin parents to be (if they plan to breastfeed)  is the My Breast Friend twins nursing pillow. I love that it is stable and large enough to comfortably hold a baby on each side.  Getting the hang of nursing twins definitely takes time but this pillow is a great tool in making things a lot easier.
  • Best tip: My #1 piece of advice for twin parents is this:  There will be a lot of times when someone is crying.  Maybe just one baby, maybe both, perhaps an older sibling or even you.  Just remind yourself that you are doing the very best you can at that moment! You only have two hands, you can only be in one place at a time, so that often means that someone has to be patient. Sometimes that means that one baby cries while you are changing another baby, or that an older child cries while you are getting both babies to sleep so you can read to him/her. Whatever the case try not to let yourself get too upset, you are doing the very best you can!!!

Ashley Akselband of Wellsprings Birth & Baby:
  • Product must haves: Twin Z Pillow – I usually suggest this pillow over the BreastFriend because it’s a multi-purpose pillow. You can use it for breastfeeding or bottle feeding, and it can be more comfortable for moms who may have had a c-section. Additionally, the pillow grows with the babies – it can be used to prop the babies up, for tummy time, allows the babies to be close to one another, and can be used as a floor pillow for movies or cuddle time as the babies grow into childhood. Baby Relax Hadley Double Rocker – I love this and suggest this as a purchase for the nursery, especially for families with multiples or who already have older children. It’s great because it’s 1 1/2 times the size of a regular glider which makes feedings and cuddle time so much easier with two or more babies (more room = more comfort!) In addition, the rocker is big enough to fit a toddler or an older sibling so everyone can comfortably enjoy story time. There is also a matching ottoman which is great for storage.
  • Best tips: 1. Always have your major purchases (car seats, cribs, strollers, nursery fully stocked, etc.) by 28 weeks MAX. Many women can be put on bed rest when they are expecting multiples, so it’s important to have everything done and set up well before that time! 2. Invest in two strollers that can grow with the family and have different configurations – one in which car seats can clip into for the quick errands (no one wants to lug 2+ car seats around or bring out a heavy stroller for a quick trip into the supermarket) and another sturdy double stroller which can be used for walks and longer trips.

Abby Ludwig, Gugu Guru Registry Consultant:

  • Product Must Have: Without a doubt, my number one suggested product for moms of multiples is a good stroller. Your stroller instantly becomes your lifeline to the outside world, and makes it possible to leave your home when it feels like the walls are caving in.
  • Best tips: (Read Abby’s post on how to survive the first few months with twins on Twiniversity!) Organization is your BEST friend! Bringing two new munchkins home for the first time can be just *slightly* overwhelming. Okay, who am I kidding? It can be downright terrifying. Between the napping, the nursing, the pumping, and the pooping it can be nearly impossible to keep everything straight. Taking a few minutes throughout the day to keep things organized will greatly save your sanity. Sidenote for solely bottle feeders: Make all of your bottles first thing in the morning and store them in the fridge for easy feedings throughout the rest of the day! This helps do away with the stress of the instant baby screams the moment hunger pangs hit.

Gugu Guru recommends:

Stuck on You Name Labels: When it comes to twins, there are a lot of things to label – you want to make sure everything from clothing to bottles to formula containers are labeled properly. We’re huge fans of Stuck on You Labels to make YOUR life easier! Stuck On You Name Labels are safe in the microwave, dishwasher and freezer, plus they come with a scratch resistant coating making them waterproof and super long lasting. If you’re little ones are heading to daycare, we recommend using the labels on blankets, lovies, shoes, clothes, food, and more. Plus, Stuck on You Name Labels are super easy to customize – you can do coordinating colors for twins with the same font, or switch it up and do two totally different labels to ease any confusion. No matter which design you pick, you’re going to need something to label all of those bottles and toys, especially when other people are watching your kids!

BabyBjorn Bouncer Bliss: When Gugu Guru teamed up with Noelle from Oh Happy Play to help prepare her room for twin baby boys, we highly recommended the BabyBjorn Bouncer Bliss – they are one of our all-time favorite baby items, whether you’re having one, two, or three! The BabyBjorn Bouncer Bliss is wonderfully safe and supportive space for baby to relax while in the same room as the rest of the family. It’s lightweight, so you can carry it from room-to-room, too. Parents of multiples say that the BabyBjorn Bouncer Bliss is a must-have for feeding time, even as the babies transition to baby food. The gentle rocking creates a sense of bliss and tranquility, not just at the beginning of a baby’s life, but later on as well. By having a safe space for baby to recline on the floor, it promotes interaction with other family members, especially siblings. Baby can sit face-to-face with their siblings for baby games and play time.  The soft and natural rocking, completely powered by the baby, requires no batteries or cords. This encourages babies’ interaction with their sense of balance and motor skills, by rocking in response to their own movements. If you’re a minimalist mama, or want to keep baby-tech at a minimum, these are ideal for your twin nursery. Plus, they fold up super easily in case you need extra room.
