Real Mom Review: Thule Urban Glide

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

It can be hard to find the time to workout when you’re also taking care of a little one, which is why so many parents turn to jogging with baby as a way to get a workout in while baby hangs out in the stroller. Our top pick for jogging stroller is the Thule Urban Glide, and we had a real mom, Kusum, review one – here’s her take on why the Thule Urban Glide gets 5 stars as a jogging stroller!

Live in an urban environment? Check out our top jogging strollers for urban parents.

Want to see more posts from Kusum? Check out her top picks for bringing baby home essentials, new mom style guide, and new mom fitness tips.

Being a first time mom, I generally spend hours on the internet looking up baby product reviews from time to time. Call me paranoid, but there is not a single baby product I bring home without reading at least a few dozen reviews and comparing different products and their features (even if it is as simple as a baby toothbrush). Maybe all moms are like that? Or maybe not? But in any case, nothing is more important to us mamas than our little one’s safety, right?

So, when it was time for the hubs and I to choose a jogging stroller, I was more skeptical than confused with the number of options that are out there in the market. And for someone who has a love-hate relationship with running, this was a make or break situation, because it is extremely important to me that both my baby and I, enjoy our run while also being safe and worry-free. This Thule Urban Glide jogging stroller is everything I was looking for (and more). And I have Monica of Gugu Guru to thank for that – not only did she recommend the Thule Urban Glide but when I expressed a few concerns about this jogging stroller, she also gathered expert opinions from pros who have used this stroller for a while and love it. Talk about going above and beyond – personal concierge indeed!

Reasons why I (the hubs and our baby) love this stroller… First and foremost, my hubby is tall whereas I on the other hand am petite and the Thule Urban Glide has an adjustable-height handlebar which makes it easy for either of us to use this jogging stroller without any hassle. It is easy to maneuver the stroller when I want to make a quick turn or even when the path is bumpy. I can recline the baby into a comfortable sleeping position when he is fast asleep on our run and park the stroller as I stretch halfway through the run. The stroller has a zippered storage compartment under the seat that comes with a water-resistant cover which is super helpful for the rainy Seattle weather. And weirdly enough, this stroller glides so smoothly that it makes it fun + makes me feel like going for a run with my baby more often. Can you tell from that big smile on my little baby’s face that he loves to go running with his mama!

On the downside, even though the Thule Urban Glide feels light while running, this is not exactly a light-weight stroller, but I think it has to be heavy and sturdy to ensure safety. I also wish that a cup/bottle holder came with the stroller, but that’s a minor complaint. This jogging stroller is definitely a bit on the expensive side but when your baby’s safety is in question, the price tag is justifiable and worth it!

We still haven’t had a chance to test the multi-position sun canopy (just thankful for the rear appearance the sun god makes over here in Seattle), and come to think of it, we haven’t ever tried to fold the stroller for storing either (thank god for the ample space in the garage!). I am quite eager to use the Thule Urban Glide as a travel system and to take it on the beach and mountain trails on our next vacation. And all in all, this stroller gets a 5 star from me and I highly recommend it!

UPPAbaby VISTA Stroller for New Mamas

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Why did we recommend the UPPAbaby VISTA stroller to Angelique Cabral? When she started working with the Gugu Guru team on her registry, she made it clear that she needed a stroller that would be great for travel, long walks around the neighborhood, and most importantly, really functional!

We knew the ultimate stroller for her would be the UPPAbaby VISTA! We have sung the praises of the UPPAbaby VISTA before – it’s a featured baby gear item in our Cause Driven Registry. It’s also one of our favorite strollers for families who plan to have more than one child. When See Kate Sew got the chance to test it out, she said, “We love this stroller and it is pretty special that my 3-year-old gets the front seat. She loves peeking on her little sister and I think it makes her feel good that this stroller is really for both of them! I take this UPPAbaby VISTA stroller everywhere, including the grocery store and walks. It’s super easy to set up, everything clicks into place! And the basket underneath is big enough for a whole load of groceries (I never get carts anymore!) It’s such a great single stroller and an amazing double! I recommend it to everyone!“

UPPAbaby VISTA Stroller

The UPPAbaby VISTA also comes with a bassinet attachment, which is ideal for newborns. Angelique has been using it as a make-shift sleeping quarter for baby Adelaide when she’s on set on CBS’ Life In Pieces. Parents also tell us that they love the large basket under the UPPAbaby VISTA stroller – it’s perfect for stocking up on things like diapers, wipes… and wine (we kid! Kind of.)

And, for all of you eco-conscious parents, we named the UPPAbaby VISTA one of our best choice for eco-conscious moms. Heading for a walk in the afternoon sun? No worry! The UPPAbaby VISTA features a UPF 50 drop down sunshade to keep UV rays off baby’s precious skin. And, no need to worry about a flat tire ever with the VISTA, as the wheels are made of foam and rubber – with just the right amount of jiggle to lull baby to sleep, and smooth enough to help baby stay fast asleep.

Must Have NYC Mom Essentials

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

One of the reasons mamas love Gugu Guru is that our style quizzes give personal recommendations based on where you live – because we understand that suburban mamas need different items than urban mamas! Today’s guest post is from a NYC mama who takes her two littles all over the five boroughs and back again, without even breaking a sweat. Megan is the mama to two kids under four years old, and has some great tips for surviving NYC life with little kids. You can find Megan on Instagram – and let us know in the comments what your favorite products for urban parenting are!

Adorable dinosaur clothing from Mitz Accessories

Being a new mom is hard. Being a new mom in NYC is borderline insane. As hard as navigating the trains with a stroller can be at rush hour, living in a space that is the size of most Americans living rooms, and paying what many people consider a mortgage on preschool but it has it’s perks too. Your kids can literally sleep through anything. After a few licks on the subway their immune systems are made of steel that no suburban kid could even dream of. Their palates have tasted the finer things of life since we have access to the best restaurants in the world and my three-year-old son might not know what a lawnmower is but can navigate the MTA without batting an eye.

I’m Megan @girlgonechildnyc, I’ve birthed two babies in this concrete jungle and I’m currently still keeping alive a 3 and 1-year-old here. So here are my top 10 registry items from a NYC Mom.

1. Original Ergo Carrier: I’ve tried a lot of different baby carries and I always go back to the original Ergo. It’s the one carrier I can wear seven hours straight and doesn’t hurt my back. I also can nurse discreetly on the train in this carrier with out a flashing my boob to the entire subway car.

2. phil&teds Lobster High Chair: You’re meeting friends in a tiny restaurant in the West Village and they don’t have high chairs? Boom! The Lobster has you covered.

3. A Noise Machine: While yes, most NYC babies can sleep through about anything, why risk it? You want your baby to still be asleep when that fire truck goes by at 4am.

4. The Pello: As my husband and I used to joke “Praise be to the Pello,” since our daughter had a pretty bad case of colic and this is the one place we could sit her as an infant and it was so ridiculously soft she wouldn’t cry. It acts similarly to a DockATot, and you can also set it up anywhere in the apartment.

5. NYC Décor: Almost every kids room in NYC I’ve been in has at least on piece that reminds you they’re a NYC baby. We’re proud of our New York Babies’, as it’s not easy raising kids here. It’s something they will be able to tell people the rest of their lives that they were born here. My favorite pieces are the interactive wall art by local NYC mom Kate Durkin.

6. Zoe Stroller: Strollers with infant seats are great, but they’re heavy and to be honest, I never used them because hauling a bulky stroller up two flights of subway stairs just wasn’t something I found fun just a few months shy of having a baby. You’re way more likely to wear your baby around NYC and get a decent umbrella stroller at 6 months. The Zoe stroller is perfect for commuting up and down subway stairs at just 10 lbs and still tons of storage.

7. Skip Hop Changing Pad: I’m not saying I’ve never had to change my kids diaper on a subway bench when poop literally hit the fan but I’m not saying I haven’t.

8. Stroller Bunting: Because as much as I wish I lived in 60 degree year round weather, I don’t, and if you think your sweet little 6-month-old baby will sit there with a blanket over him without throwing it on the street, he won’t.

9. Buggy Hooks: The one good thing about strolling around NYC with a stroller is you have a place to actually store all your bags. Think King Mighty Buggy Hook for Strollers lets you ad these on to your stroller and you can hang your stuff. Amazing.

10. Taga Bike 2.0: The best and safest family bike out there. It’s pretty cool looking too.  Perfect for neighborhood rides or commuting with the kids when the MTA poops the bucket.

Not a NYC mama? Don’t worry, we have you covered:

Baby Safety Month: Strap in for Safety While On the Go with JPMA

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

It’s National Baby Safety Month and every Monday we will be sharing tips from the leaders in baby safety knowledge at JPMA. Today is all about Baby Safety on the Go – from strollers to carseats to carriers. Don’t forget to take last week’s Carseat Challenge!

From carriers to car seats to strollers and more, there are a wide variety of products all parents and caregivers need to get baby out and about.  With more options available than ever before, there is quite a bit to consider when choosing the product best suited for you and your baby.

But, strollers and carriers are not just for taking your baby from point A to point B, they are a lifestyle choice! A stroller or carrier is a part of your image and a reflection of personal style, parenting style, and lifestyle.

From travel systems and joggers to umbrellas and multiple seats, the possibilities are endless. With so many choices available today, selecting the right stroller can be a daunting task.

A stroller will be one of your most-used items so you must love everything about it. Again, think about what makes the most sense for your lifestyle. Do your research before you even visit the store. Comparison shop and talk to other parents about their recommendations. Manufacturer and retailer Web sites are also a great source of information

Don’t forget about dad! Most moms are the primary baby gear decision maker, but consider dads needs when selecting your stroller. Men focus on certain features like wheel design, steering, suspension, overall stroller height/feel, and sporty fashions, but above all, dad should also feel comfortable pushing your stroller.

Finally, keep in mind that one stroller may not serve all your needs. You may need more than one, especially as your baby grows and your needs and lifestyle changes. Whatever stroller you decide to add to your baby gear repertoire, will be the right one for you and your family and will surely provide many hours of enjoyment for you and your little one when out and about! So be sure to enjoy the ride!

When thinking about baby safety on the go, remember these guidelines for a safe outing:

  • All strollers come fitted with standard safety harness straps.
  • Use straps at all times, even if it’s a short trip.
  • Harness straps stop the child from climbing out of the seat and falling, and protects the child should the stroller tip over.
  • Safety straps should be used regardless of the child’s age.
  • Many strollers feature a five-point harness system, which features straps that secure over each shoulder, at both sides of the waist, and in the middle of the legs.
  • It is important to always use all straps, not just lap straps or shoulder straps alone.
  • If you use a soft carrier, select one made of a durable, washable fabric with sturdy, adjustable straps.
  • Read and follow all manufacturer’s instructions for use, age and weight recommendations.
  • Be sure baby’s weight is evenly distributed in the carrier and all safety straps are secured.
  • Check for ripped seams, sharp edges, and missing or loose snaps.
  • Always keep one hand on baby when tightening/loosening straps for any reason or taking baby out or putting baby in.

September is Baby Safety Month. Check out more safety tips at babysafetymonth.org

6 Jogging Strollers for City Living

by Gugu Guru 2 Comments

Jogging and running in an urban environment is a great way to stay fit and healthy, but when you throw a stroller into the mix, things can get hairy. Between narrow sidewalks, potholes, public transportation and people traffic, finding the perfect jogging stroller for city living can be a challenge. After chatting with many parents, and lots of research, we rounded up our top picks for urban environment jogging and running strollers.

Do you have any on this list? Are we missing any? Leave a comment and let us know!

Budget Pick:

Urbini Avi: If you are looking for a quality “budget-friendly” jogger, the team at Gugu Guru recommends the Urbini Avi. Why? It’s a reliable, good quality jogger complete with great features like a cup holder, ample storage and a compact fold – and it has a super price tag.

Best Storage Pick:

Bumbleride Indie: This is an absolutely gorgeous stroller with great features – a wide canopy, compact fold and ample storage. We also love that the stroller is manufactured with eco-friendlier textiles. We wouldn’t necessarily recommend this stroller for hard core runners, but it’s a high-quality option for your one and only day-to-day stroller and jogger.

Learn more: A real mom’s review on the Bumbleride Indie

Best versatile pick:

Bugaboo Runner: Parents who have a top of the line Bugaboo stroller already can rejoice that they only need to buy the frame – it’s compatible with other Bugaboo seats. Designed with active parents in mind, the Bugaboo Runner comes in two versions; as a complete jogging stroller and as an accessory for existing Bugaboo owners, offering an easy, click-and-go jogging extension. The large under seat basket will hold your essentials and most accessories are compatible with the stroller. In characteristic Bugaboo fashion, you can choose to have the seat facing you, or facing the world. What are you waiting for? Run free!

Best for everyday use:

Baby Jogger 2016 Summit X3 Single Jogging Stroller: With its patented quick fold technology, you can fold your stroller with one hand, which means if you’re hopping on and off the subway and there’s a possibility you’re going to have to fold up the stroller, this is the one for you. This 3 Wheel Stroller has 16″ rear and 12″ front air filled tires with front wheel lock mounted on the handlebar for easy conversions between jogger and stroller mode, meaning you can use for jogging and everyday use. All wheel suspension system soaks up road bumps making it the perfect all terrain stroller, especially for going over cobblestone streets or cracked sidewalks. Plus, the hand operated rear brakes make for more control on hilly or uneven terrain. And, it features a large adjustable sun canopy with peek a boo windows and side vents.

Best lifespan:

Mountain Buggy Terrain Premium Jogging Stroller: If you’re looking for a space-saving stroller, the Mountain Buggy Terrain Premium Jogging Stroller is your pick, as it is not only can double as an every day stroller, but is able to be used from newborn to 70 pounds. The newborn perfect reclinable seat, compatible with the Mountain Buggy Carry Cot+ in matching fabric (sold separately) and infant car seats from most major brands (sold separately) allow you to use the Terrain from birth. Plus, the Terrain offers a  new, extremely easy one hand fold offers ease and convenience. Now a full size jogging stroller fits everywhere a standard stroller will.

Best for Avid Runners:

Thule Urban Glide Jogging Stroller: We know how hard it can be to find time to work out, so when running is your only option, you’re going to want your stroller to keep up! At 22 pounds, the Thule Urban Glide is super lightweight and aerodynamic; this is perfect for winding through crowded sidewalks and around tight corners. The front wheel swivels for easy maneuverability, and locks into place for jogging. As an added feature, the padded ergonomic handlebar has a range of heights for parent’s comfort, so you can run comfortably. Plus, the seat reclines almost all the way, so baby can nap while you get your groove on.

New Mom Review: 4moms moxi + car seat

by Gugu Guru 1 Comment

Theresa – Gugu Guru’s head of design and new mommy to adorable Robbie – was so excited to be able to try out the moxi stroller and self-installing car seat from 4moms.  If you don’t know 4moms, we think of them as Apple computer-like innovators for parents.  4moms’ gear is thoughtfully designed with some of the coolest tech around. Read what Theresa calls out as the pros and cons for the stroller and car seat below (and although Theresa received these products for review from 4moms, all opinions are her own.)

moxi stroller ($699.99)

Pro: Just Downright Cool Technology
This carriage has a cell phone charger port – totally handy! It will also tell you how fast you are going, distance, etc. I really love that the stroller features lights if you are out walking at dusk (trying to get baby to snooze) – super neat!

Pro: Self Charging! (most of the time)
The carriage has a generator in it so it does not require batteries for any of its awesome features! (Caveat: the generator will only last if the carriage is used frequently, if not, you have to plug it in and charge it to use all its cool technology.)

Pro: Easy to Open and Close
It was so easy to open and close the carriage for travel.

Con: Little Pouch for Belongings
The little pouch for your belongings is open. I didn’t totally love this because if my phone or wallet is in it I felt uncomfortable walking away from the carriage, even a little, while out in public. Editor’s note: 4moms really designed this to make your phone easily accessible, hence no zipper.

Con: Converting The Seat To Accommodate An Older Child
The infant carrier and the regular seat for older baby are two separate pieces (separate from the carriage base itself). Even though the regular seat is not hard to attach, it has to be completely converted to work. So if you have two kids, one older one infant, you can only use the carriage exclusively for one or the other in a single outing.  Editors note:  We spoke to 4moms about this and they said that their test parents have found this process to be very easy – clicking/unclicking two belts on the backside of the seat and turning the seat around. The three configurations are meant to grow with the child – so normally, you wouldn’t be switching back and forth regularly for two different children – although you certainly could.

Self-Installing Car Seat ($499.99)

Pro: Extra AWESOME Technology
The 4moms app will not only self-install the car seat as promised, it will also adjust positioning and tension as your baby grows. It will let you know if carrier is in correctly and it will also alert you if you leave the carrier (and baby) in the car. Pretty cool! Plus the software that runs the car seat base can regularly be updated with new features and functionality right through your smartphone.

Pro: Infant Fit
The car seat comes with an additional infant insert to be used for 4-11 pounds and really helps baby sit comfortably and securely – especially when baby is on the smaller side. Also, the bottom buckle is more rigid, verses just a fabric piece, so it makes it very easy to get baby in the seat (without them sitting on it.)

Con: Requires Eight (8) D Batteries
All the the extra technology that you get with the 4moms app will only work with the addition of the batteries in the base. When baby was only 6 weeks, the batteries died. (Who has time to run outside and change batteries in the carseat once a month?!) Editor’s Note: According to 4moms, this may have been an issue in some of the first units, but today, that issue has been resolved. By downloading the new update (version 4.16),  the battery life will be significantly extended. The battery life should last the life cycle of one baby in the car seat. New baby, new batteries.

Con: A Couple Technology Fails
A couple of times the base alerted that the car seat carrier was not in correctly when it was. One of the times we were an hour from home and listened to it ding and false alarm the whole way home. We couldn’t fix this until we could take it out and reinstall which we couldn’t do being an hour away – a little annoying. Editor’s Note: We spoke to 4moms and they said if the carrier is not detected, as described, the issue can often be resolved just by lifting the carrier out, and placing it back in the base. Typically, a re-installation of the base is not needed. 4moms is launching another software update that will further improve the user experience and reduce the occurrence of false alarms, such as this one.

Spring Cleaning: Tot Squad

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Imagine if there were a company who would take apart your baby gear, clean it all, and reassemble it spick and span, shiny and new…? Well, we are here to tell you, your dreams have come true with Tot Squad! Tot Squad is a mobile service that offers baby gear cleaning, car seat installations and stroller repairs at different retail locations daily in Los Angeles, San Diego, New York City and Washington DC; they also make house calls.

Tot Squad has traversed the globe seeking the best, non-toxic, baby-safe and mom-approved cleaning products around. Their sanitizing, but baby-safe cleaning process uses high powered vacuums, eco-friendly cleaning products from the Honest Company, commercial steamers and lots of elbow grease.  They offer 4 cleaning packages to turn baby gear from dirty to divine. Tot Squad was founded by Jennifer Beall Saxton in 2010.  She was inspired to start a business to help busy Millennial parents looking for work-life balance solutions.

Tot Squad has some Spring Cleaning tips to share with us:

  • If there is something especially dirty or stained with grease, my “go to” is blue Dawn dish soap combined with a lot of elbow grease. I like to scrub with a toothbrush which is thorough, yet gentle.
  • Most fabrics or cloth items should have a tag with the manufacturer’s washing instructions. If it doesn’t have a tag, spot cleaning with a mild detergent is the safest way to proceed. You can also launder many items on your washing machine’s gentle setting and hang them to dry.
  • With items where safety is a factor, I always recommend going to a professional. Taking apart and putting back together a car seat with all those parts and straps can be daunting, for example. The Tot Squad has been my go to cleaning service for every baby item I’ve passed along to friends and family. I also like to have them clean things before I pack them away. This helps prevent stains that show up over time (such as baby spit-up and breast milk) from later popping up.

You can find Tot Squad on their website, Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter.

Today, Kathy is sharing simple tips for getting outdoors with your baby – stay tuned for posts on hiking while pregnant, and hiking with baby.

Tips for Getting Outdoors with Your Baby

Getting outdoors with your baby is important. You both need the fresh air and the opportunity to be with nature. I have always loved to go outdoors, but once I had a baby, I needed to find ways to make it enjoyable for both of us. Here are a few tips to help you to get outdoors with your baby and enjoy that time.

Keep it Simple

When you are outdoors with your baby, you do not need to be doing anything fancy. Keep the outdoors simple! Go on a walk, take a hike, have a picnic, and just enjoy each other’s company. The whole idea behind getting outdoors is to spend time with your baby.

Set Low Expectations

When you go anywhere with a baby, you never know what to expect. When I’m heading outdoors with my baby, I set low expectations. You shouldn’t have unrealistic expectations for your time spent outdoors with the baby. I like to think of a few activities we will enjoy, but for the most part, going with the flow is how I roll when I’m heading outdoors.

Don’t Stress

Oh mama, don’t stress about being outside with your baby. I’m sure you are nervous about bugs, the sun, and if they will enjoy it. You can always start going outside for a small period and then work your way up. Your baby will eventually get used to spending more and more time outside with you.

Getting outside with your baby and enjoying the fresh air is something you won’t ever regret. The outdoors is a special place for moms and babies. There are endless activities and plenty of chances to have fun together. Make sure you apply my top 3 tips and most of all, have fun!
