Baby Safety Month Tips

by Abby Ludwig 8 Comments

Baby Safety Month is here! As parents, safety is our number one priority, especially as it relates to the world of baby products and gear. We are always looking to find products that will help enrich our children’s lives while making things just a little bit easier! In honor of Baby Safety Month, we have partnered with MAM as well as other brands that join us in keeping our babes and tots safe! These brands all keep safety at the top of their priority list, even as they create and update their product lines. Take a look at some of their favorite safety tips here:

Tip 1: Safe Sleep ABC’s

2016 was the last time the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) updated their safe sleep recommendations. Many parents are unknowingly putting their little one’s down without following the safe sleep ABC’s: Alone. Back. Crib (or bassinet). We recommend an easy to use swaddle, like Love To Dream’s Swaddle UPTM from birth so you don’t have to worry about baby breaking out of a swaddle blanket.  Choose size according to baby’s weight, not age. Stop swaddling as soon as baby shows signs of rolling and transition to arms-free sleep, like the Swaddle UPTM 50/50 Transition Bag. Check out our favorite swaddle, Love to Dream’s safe sleep page, for more safe sleep tips!

For more of Love to Dream’s products, take a look here!

Tip 2: Crib Safety

Piggy-backing off of the Safe Sleep ABC’s, your crib set up is also extremely important in creating a safe sleep space. Keep it clean and simple. Remove any stuffed animals, blankets, or anyting with soft surfaces that could possibly block baby’s airway during sleep. Provide a firm mattress – like those from our friends at Colgate – with a fitted sheet. Do not put a blanket on the baby or in the crib and again, be sure to lay your baby on his/her back.

Tip 3: Pacifier Safety

Consider pacifier usage when placing baby down for sleep and remember that the pacifier may not be reinserted once baby falls asleep. Pacifier use is shown to reduce the risk of SIDS. MAM supports the AAP published guidelines for pacifier usage. Check them out here: https://bit.ly/AAPInfantSleepSafety

For more information about pacifiers and how they reduce the risk of SIDS, visit https://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/116/5/1245

Tip 4: Wifi/Monitor Usage

Many parents use a monitor, which gives them peace of mind as their little one adjusts to his/her new surroundings. When setting up your monitor, be mindful of all cords! Keep them more than 3ft away from your child. As wifi monitors/nursery products become more popular, it is also important to keep the wifi products in your nursery secure from web intruders. Do NOT use wifi products that have default credentials or that run extra programs, otherwise known as “backdoors.” And only use wifi products with secure encryption. For more information on wifi monitor safety, check out the features on the Nanit Pro!

Tip 5: Helping Baby Sleep

The dreaded first cold often pops up at some point in the first year. Unfortunately, there aren’t so many ways you can help your little one feel better. However, cool-mist humidifiers are a safe and natural way to thin baby’s mucus when congested. They also alleviate symptoms that may be preventing your little one from getting a good night’s rest such as dry skin, bloody noses, sore throat and dry cough.

For some great humidifier and air purifier options, check out our friends at Crane-USA!

Tip 6: Out and About with your Carrier

Carriers are extremely helpful for new (and/or experienced) parents. They provide you with the option to be close to baby but still have your hands-free. This is especially helpful when you have an older child –i.e. toddler—running around the house. To ensure that you are using your carrier safely, keep baby visible and kissable! By keeping your little one’s head at a kissable height when in the carrier, you can easily monitor baby’s airway. Plus, the snuggles are LIFE!

Check out carriers by Baby K’tan here.

Tip 7: Toy Safety

When your little one is up and ready to play, it’s important to keep a close eye on his/her activities. Watch out for small parts as little ones tend to explore first with their mouths. Always double check the seams of soft toys to make sure no stitches have popped loose. Stuffing is a choking hazard. Opt for high-quality, well-made toys that will hold up to hours of daily use.

We love the toy selections from our friends at Mouse Loves Pig.

Tip 8: Car Seat Safety

While all car seats have to pass certain safety tests and standards, there are two main components to car seat safety: fitting the seat into your vehicle and fitting your child into the seat. A correctly installed car seat should not move more than 1” in any direction when testing tightness at the belt path. Always make sure you have the right seat for your child’s age and measurements, and ensure the harness is snugly tightened so that you cannot pinch the material over the child’s shoulders. For more information on car seat safety and for help with car seat installation, visit our friends at Tot Squad!

General Baby Safety

The Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA) sponsors Baby Safety Month to help educate parents and caregivers as they go through product selection for their children. Always remember to read product labels and warnings before using any product. Continue to inspect your children’s items as they experience wear and tear over time and look out for any product recalls. Visit JPMA’s Baby Safety Month Page for even more tips and tricks!

pumping bra

Kindred Bravely Sublime Hands-Free Pumping & Nursing Bra: If you’re a pumping mama, you know how much time it can take to pump – and if you’re pumping at work, or on-the-go, you want a comfortable and simple way to get that milk! We’re slightly obsessed with the Kindred Bravely Sublime Hands-Free Pumping & Nursing Bra for so many reasons. This must-have breastfeeding essential for nursing moms combines the best features of a nursing and hands-free pumping bras. One of the reasons we love this bra so much is that the innovative design allows for easy hand massage while pumping, which can help maximize breast milk output. If you’re pumping on-the-go or at work, there are no wardrobe changes necessary! The dual-layer design means switching effortlessly from pumping to nursing with the simple click of a clip. The Kindred Bravely Sublime Hands-Free Pumping & Nursing Bra works well with most pump brands like Spectra, Medela, Ameda, Lansinoh, etc. A really cool feature of this bra is that you can nurse and pump at the same time! Simply unclip the bottom clip on one side to insert your pump flange, and unclip the top clip on the other side for instant skin-to-skin breastfeeding access for your baby. Plus, this pumping bra is super soft and comfortable as any other Kindred Bravely’s nursing bras typically are. Use code PUMPGURU to save 20% off your first order from Kindred Bravely.

Rose Glow Purifying Cleanser

Matrescence Rose Gold Purifying Cleanser: When it comes to skincare, whether you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, or a new mom, you’re always going to want the cleanest and most natural ingredients for your skin. It’s no secret how much we love Matrescence Rose Gold Purifying Cleanser for breastfeeding moms; it is EWG verified to reduce toxic chemical exposure during pregnancy, breastfeeding and beyond. This cleanser, which comes in a gorgeous glass bottle is ideal for tackling inflammatory skin conditions such as acne and rosacea, which are common during pregnancy and postpartum. The pure grapefruit extract neutralizes the skin while plantain, echinacea and burdock root calm any irritation and inflammation. The result is deeply purified and perfectly balanced skin. The blend of AHA exfoliates and refines by promoting cell renewal, while delivering a blemish-free, healthy glow. The Matrescence Rose Gold Purifying Cleanser dissolves dirt, oil and makeup to unclog pores without stripping your skin of its natural oils. Use code GUGU15 for 15% off until August 5th.

lactation cookies

Bumpin Blends Lactation Cookies: For many new moms, producing breastmilk can be a struggle, but there are certain herbs and ingredients which have been proven to help assist a mother in breastmilk production. Now, imagine putting those ingredients into a delicious oatmeal chocolate chip cookie…winning! Bumpin Blends, whose mission is to make healthy food accessible to new moms, has created a lactation cookie made from a proprietary blend of ingredients, which is designed to to not only boost milk supply, but also support fatigue, mood, and brain fog. The special blend in the cookie is due to a team of dietitians who activate the beneficial ingredients before adding them to the dough, making them more effective, faster working, and chewy (rather than crunchy like other lactation cookies). These would make a great gift for any new mom, or for yourself. After eating the super yummy oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, a breastfeeding mama should see a significant increase in supply within 1-2 hours of a cookie, making these the best treat to gift to any breastfeeding mom. Use code GUGUGURU for 25% off your order.

Founded by Certified Breastfeeding Specialist, Luna Feehan, Legendairy Milk is an organic lactation supplement company, which is the only 100% fenugreek-free and sugar-free line of lactation supplements on the market with over 8,000 reviews and a 4.5-star rating. The Village Reviews: Joeyband

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

The Joeyband is a revolutionary postpartum positioning band that helps secure a newborn to a parent’s chest. The Joeyband can be used to help prevent falls and keep baby close during skin-to-skin contact. Skin-to-skin contact is vital after birth and has been shown to improve overall infant development, breastfeeding, temperature regulation, and bonding. Our Village testers were able to try the Joeyband and provide us with their thoughts on this innovative band.

Joeyband

This Joeyband is great to bring along to the hospital for immediate skin-to-skin postpartum. It is easy to put on and really helps you feel more secure in holding your baby – especially when you’re fatigued after a long labor and/or still feeling the effects of anesthesia. We tried the Joeyband with our newborn and were impressed with how quickly it calmed him down! We even caught a few smiles in a row while our son was dozing. It was a good reminder to keep up the skin-to-skin time. The fabric feels a little bit like swimsuit material and is really stretchy, so both my husband and I could use the same size. My husband loved the Joeyband even more than I did – I think it helps him feel that special bond that a lot of mothers feel through the nursing relationship. I anticipate my husband will be using this product a lot before parental leave is over. I was happy to learn that there are even more uses for Joeyband as our little guy grows up. We have a plane trip next month and I’m going to use it to help keep our son more secure and calm as a lap child. Thanks to Gugu Guru for giving me the opportunity to test the Joeyband.

-Alyssa J.

Joeyband

The importance of skin to skin for newborns after they are born has long been established. But the benefits extend beyond just the hospital stay – it’s actually recommended for the first 3-4 months, or until the baby becomes to squirmy. And babies aren’t the only ones who benefit from skin to skin.

Skin to skin is often delayed after a c-section, due to the risk of infant falls. The Joeyband allows for immediate skin to skin for mom and baby because it reduces that risk. It keeps the baby safe and secure against mom’s chest so that this important bonding can start immediately. This way both mom and baby can reap the benefits of skin to skin during the repair and transport process.

The Joeyband can also be used for kangaroo care in the NICU, where skin to skin is critical for preemie babies. Sometimes it’s all a mom can do if the baby is too small or unable to breastfeed. It can also be used by dads! Since NICU babies are often hooked up to tubes and wires, the Joeyband helps prevent these from being disturbed. It’s appropriate for twins and micro-preemies, too. And in the event of an emergency, the babies can quickly be assessed because there are no hooks or buttons, just a few rows of Velcro.

I was fortunate to have a full-term baby with no complications but still found the Joeyband to be useful both in the hospital and even now that we are at home. It allowed me to maximize my skin to skin time in the hospital and aided in breastfeeding because it supported my baby without the need for a bulky pillow. This took some of the strain off my back and neck. When I wasn’t using it to hold my daughter, I used it as a belly band to support my newly postpartum belly.

The Joeyband is soft and comfortable to wear. I was able to put it on and take it off unassisted because it secures easily with Velcro. Once its in place, you hardly notice that it’s there. I definitely recommend the Joeyband for all new parents.

-Misty H.

Joeyband

The Joeyband has been such an essential part of my daily routine. I love using this when I need to have a free hand to work on something while sitting. It is so comfortable and easy to put on and remove.  The gentle squeeze it gives to baby while I’m wearing her gives her security while being skin to skin. Our bond has grown stronger while having the opportunity to stay so close more often through the day!

-Valerie T.

Joeyband

I enjoyed testing the Joeyband product, and as a mom who had a c-section, I can see the great benefit it provides.

My son has reflux so in addition to taking Zantac he also prefers to sleep upright on someone’s chest. The Joeyband helped me to be somewhat hands-free on the couch and allowed us to enjoy the baby snuggles. Overall a good product for what it was designed for!

-Katherine H.

Joeyband

I have been using the Joeyband for about two weeks. It was very easy to use and made skin-to-skin time with my little one much more enjoyable. It gave me the freedom to use my hands, especially during my meal times, which a lot of new moms know can be a challenge  🙂 The band is thick and stretchy and my little one enjoyed the swaddle-like feeling the band gave him as he would quickly fall asleep. I liked that I didn’t have to worry about him rolling or sliding off of me. The Joeyband is a great product and I would recommend it to any new mom!

-Taylor S.

What’s New on Gugu: May 29, 2019

by Abby Ludwig Leave a Comment

This week I am introducing two brand new companies to WNOG and highlighting three other products that are from companies we already love. Many of these products are great for travel and are easy to take on the go with your little ones. Plus, this week they are all absolutely brand new to the baby and toddler world. They also make great baby shower or birthday gifts. I am very excited to share these new items with you!

For a number of our other favorites, please check out our Explore page!

CoralUV: We first fell in love with the CoralUV Sanitizer when we saw them at the Chicago Baby Show last summer. Now they are nearing their full launch with a brand new UV Sanitizer. Cleaning bottles, pacifiers, teethers, and more, we love how easy the CoralUV is to use. We also love that this can be used well beyond the bottle stage to keep household items clean too! A perfect time saving gift for any new parent!

Wayb Pico: We have been (not so) patiently waiting the arrival of this new travel seat. You may have heard us talk about it before, but we think the Pico will change the travel game with little ones. Suitable for kids 2-5 years, this forward facing seat’s frame is made from aerospace-grade aluminum, making it super lightweight (8 lbs!). They also use a mesh fabric to avoid using foam, which can be filled with toxins. Shipping in 1-2 weeks, check out the Wayb Pico for all your summer travel!

Humble-Bee Nurse-Sling: Another JPMA find from this past Spring, Humble-Bee’s Nurse-Sling may be the answer to all postpartum and nursing back pain. The Nurse-sling takes the stress off of your back and holds your little one up to feed. Plus, you can easily adjust the size and it is machine washable. A perfect unique, baby shower gift!

Bumbleride Era: Just announced by our friends at Bumbleride, the Era is their first ever reversible seat stroller. We love Bumbleride’s commitment to creating eco-friendly products that will hold up for active families. Era is an all-terrain stroller that will also be perfect for daily use. Pair it with a compatible car seat to create your own travel system too!

Skip Hop New Zoo Characters: We love Skip Hop’s fun line of Zoo Characters, which give a little extra pizzazz to both home and school activities. Introducing two new friends to the lineup; Nova Narwhal and Dillon Dragon. Their new backpacks are perfect for summer camp, especially with a matching lunchbox. We love their snack containers and straw bottles for on the go and they make a perfect toddler gift!

What’s New on Gugu: April 10, 2019

I absolutely love finding new products to share with our users. It is too easy to feel “overwhelmed” with all of the new products that hit the market each day. Having just celebrated Gugu Guru’s 4th birthday, our initial little ones aren’t even babies anymore! As your babies grow into toddlers and beyond, don’t hesitate to reach out to us for product help! We LOVE hearing from our users!

For loads of our other ever-changing favorites, please check out our Explore page!

Noggin Wipes: A truly no-mess solution to cradle cap, which affects over 70% of babies before their first birthday. These gently exfoliating wipes are created with an avocado-oil based solution, which continues to moisturize and break up cradle cap well after use. The disposable wipes will begin to work immediately, helping clear away the flaky (and unwanted) irritation.

Target’s Pillowfort Inclusive Line: Pillowfort, Target’s adorable line for kids’ décor, has revolutionized the market for children with sensory sensitivities. They have launched 20 new items, including weighted blankets, floor cushions, and a cocoon seat. Each high-quality product adds something special to this inclusive line. We cannot stop praising this line and Target’s approach to making everyone feel welcome!

Motif Medical’s Luna Breast Pump: Coming this month, The Luna Breast Pump is a great choice for working moms. It is sleek and small on the outside, but strong enough on the inside to help busy moms pump in less time. Plus it’s a ‘closed system,’ which means that your breastmilk will flow directly into the bottle and helps prevent contamination. Check their website for insurance coverage!

Mimish Storage Pouf: I am a sucker for multi-purpose items. Mimish has taken adorable décor and added even more functionality. Ever walk into your little one’s room only to find stuffed animals and toys everywhere? Look no further than this fun line of storage poufs! They will cleverly hide any mess while providing adorable aesthetic to every bedroom.

Edushape Baby Sensory Balls: Edushape’s sensory balls have been around since the late 90’s. There’s a reason why these continue to be a family favorite! We love this new set, which allow baby to explore various textures and colors with easy to grab materials.

What’s New on Gugu: March 27, 2019

I have some great new products to share this week! At Gugu Guru, we are always looking for the latest new baby/parent items to help make your lives easier. This week I am focusing on some new items that will be highlighted at the upcoming JPMA show. JPMA, or Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association, is the industry’s authority on baby product quality and safety. Plus, our very own Monica Banks, Gugu Guru’s Founder/CEO will be presenting at this year’s JPMA Trade Show!

For loads of our other favorites, please check out our Explore page! (Also, these opinions are 100% my own and I have not received any products in exchange for placement in What’s New on Gugu!)

Slumberpod: Imagine this – you are traveling with your infant or toddler and sharing a room for sleep (i.e. hotel room, grandparent’s house, etc.). When your baby first wakes up, they look across the room and can see you instantly. Instead of the full night of sleep you are all used to, your little one is up and ready to start the day. Slumberpod was created for this exact situation. A perfect solution to create a privacy pod over travel cribs or playards. This is a must-have for traveling families!

Dr. Brown’s Options+ Anti-Colic Bottle: One of our favorite bottle brands has done it again! The new Options+ Bottle utilizes a special venting system that you can use to help with symptoms of Colic and Reflux. As your baby grows, and no longer needs the extra vent, you have the ‘option’ to remove it. They have made a few other great upgrades to the new bottles, too! We love the one-handed cap removal and new nipple design. These are truly a go-to bottle for any babies with tummy issues!

NOONI’s: NOONI’s is the first all-in-one leak resistant nursing sleep bra. With a patent-pending 4 layer solution, you will no longer wake up to find yourself in a cold and damp top (or worse, bedsheet). Plus, their inside layer is made of a thin fleece material, staying warm and soft on the skin. An extremely comfortable solution to such a frustrating problem!

Cybex Stroller Upgrades: We love Cybex strollers at Gugu Guru! The Priam (class all-terrain) and Mios (travel), have recently received excellent upgrades. They have upgraded colors, stroller suspension, and the Lux Carrycot. These strollers are excellent options for moms looking for a sleek, modern stroller that functions well for everyday use.

Chicco Nextfit Zip Max Air: Chicco’s Nextfit convertible car seat has received quite the upgrade. Now with multiple recline positions, this seat fits infants starting at 4 pounds (rear facing) and converts to a forward facing seat for children up to 65 lbs. It is easy to install and has added safety features. We also love the ability to unzip the fabric, making cleaning a breeze!
