Top Mama Must-Haves from Soma

by Mel Blume Leave a Comment

As mamas, we’re superheroes 24/7. We never clock out and always have to be ready to respond. So, how can make our always-on-call lifestyles easier? By owning quick and cozy gear that’s versatile and functional: essentials we can turn to at a moment’s notice. We scoped out the soft and stylish scene by Soma, and found game-changing items that can help you master this heroic task.

Soma EnblissAround-the-clock comfort starts with ultra-cozy undergarments. If you’re nursing, Soma’s selection of bras is the breast. Designed with a one-handed release cup for easy access, these nursing bras make it super simple to feed babe without any extra stress. Our favorites are the Wireless Unlined Nursing Bra, the Embraceable Full Coverage Contour Nursing Bra, and the Embraceable Wireless Nursing Bra.  If you’re interested in barely-there bras that offer the ultimate support, check out Soma’s Enbliss Bralettes. Their second-skin feel is epic—you’ll forget they’re even on.

SOMAINNOFITSince our bodies transform and stretch during all stages of pregnancy and beyond, you might want to try the SOMAINNOFIT Bra to find your new perfect fit. Designed for fit purposes only (not as an everyday bra), this innovative measuring bra provides your exact measurements through your smartphone!

Soma leggingsSpeaking of the perfect fit, easy, go-to leggings are always essential during a mama’s journey. These two-for-one Reversible Leggings are the most convenient solution when an outfit change is needed—but there’s no time to think about your next ensemble. For a slimming option, try these leggings on for size. They’re designed to take up to 1” or more off your waist.

Soma TunicTop off your can’t-live-without leggings with one of these ultra-soft tunics. Their wear-everywhere silhouettes, with a cloud-like feel, are perfect for layering. Throw on a denim jacket, a blazer or sweater to get through the colder seasons without effort.

Soma PajamasWhen you’re not out and about, relax. And take a deep breath with the help of Soma’s Cool Nights Pajamas and Robes. Instead of dreaming about sweet Zzz’s, make them happen. With long sleeves, short sleeves, and colors and patterns galore, you can easily find sleepwear to live in, season after season.

The most amazing thing about our Soma finds? The price points. These day-to-night luxuries come without the price tag you’d expect. Treat yourself, mama. You deserve it all.

The Village Reviews: Giggle Layette

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

At Gugu Guru are often asked, “What is layette?” Layette consists of baby’s first outfits, blankets, and linens. When searching for Layette pieces you want to make each item is both soft and functional. The new Layette collection from Giggle features high-quality fabrics, artist-designed prints, and easy-to-use closures. Our Gugu Village Parents were able to test Giggle’s Layette line and appreciated the attention to detail and cute prints! Here’s what they had to say…

This onesie is so simple and pretty. It’s very soft. The buttons are easy to close and open and I like how they are hidden with the fabric. It’s very cute; I will be buying one to give as a gift for my friend’s baby shower.

The duck bib is very cute. I love the design. It got pretty dirty the first day we used it and it held up well in the wash and looked brand new again. The blanket is very soft. It’s a great blanket to travel with as a car seat blanket. It’s not big and bulky. I put it over my baby after she was strapped into the car seat. I also laid it on the floor for tummy time. I love the duck design.
-Elena M.

My daughter absolutely loves her PJs. She loves anything soft and anything with a duck print! I was pleasantly surprised that the jammies didn’t attract stuff from the floor when my daughter was crawling around.

Unlike other baby brands of baby bath towels, the Giggle towel actually dried her off.  I especially like the little loop on the end to be able to hang it up. I’ll definitely be buying more.
-Crystal B.

All of the products in this collection are so soft, high-quality, and would make great registry items and baby gifts. The Giggle Duck Printed Onesie makes an adorable newborn outfit – especially if paired with the Duck Hat. It’s a great registry item or gift because the print is gender neutral and so, so cute! Some of the ducks wear party hats, which would make a great photo for baby’s birthday or a baby announcement! The Pima cotton is very soft against baby’s skin, and the material washes well and doesn’t fade.  They smartly added the attached mittens to this outfit, which prevents newborns from scratching their faces. The sizing seems pretty true to size – it doesn’t seem to run too small or too large.

We also got the Duck Hooded Towel and were again impressed with the softness of the material and how well it washed. It’s a generous size for our big boy and there was plenty of material to wrap him up after his bath. The hood was just the right size to cover a younger baby’s head but not cover the eyes. I appreciated the little detail of the fabric loop to hang the towel up to dry on a towel hook.

The Giggle Cashmere Blanket would make the ultimate baby gift. It is SO soft and luxurious. I originally thought the colored edge was going to be a different material, but it is 100% cashmere edge to edge. This blanket is perfect for keeping baby warm in the car seat or stroller on a blustery day, but cashmere is breathable and temperature-regulating, so I think we’ll be able to use it most seasons of the year. I have a feeling our baby will become attached to this blanket and will end up carrying it around as a comfort object someday!
-Alyssa N.J.

The Pajamas have really cute giraffes on them and are legitimately the softest pajamas I have ever felt. I want a pair for myself! My daughter refuses to take them off in the morning! I’m off to buy 6 more pair!
-Lori W.

The quality, overall, is beautiful. The buttons in the center where baby’s bottom is located made it more simple to close.  We only buy onesies where the sleeves extend over our baby’s hands, as his nails grow fast and sharp, not only did this onesie serve that purpose, but they smooth fabric didn’t even seem to bother the baby (who is usually quick to show is discontent).
-Ron T.

What’s New on Gugu: April 24, 2019

by Abby Ludwig Leave a Comment

This week’s new finds highlight some great Earth Day friendly selections. Reusable food pouches, baby food makers, and food grade silicone bottles are all great new items for the eco-friendly family. You will also notice some pop culture trends popping up this week. Baby Shark anyone? For loads of our other favorites, please check out our Explore page!

Baby Brezza Food Makers and Reusable Pouches: Earth Day celebrations always remind me to make smart choices regarding the products we use in everyday life. Baby Brezza has continued to make the ‘homemade baby food game’ a reality with easy to use machines and reusable pouches! Simply pop your favorite fruit and/or veggies in the container (love the Glass for eco-friendly or the new Deluxe) and watch them cook and blend with ease. Pour any delicious mixture into the reusable pouch and you’re good to go! Added bonus – the pouches are top-rack dishwasher safe!

Hatch Maternity x Nordstrom: As we (not so) patiently await the arrival of Baby Sussex, it has become much easier to attain our own ‘Markle Sparkle!’ The new collaboration between Hatch Maternity and Nordstrom highlights items from a brand we love so much. Pair together classic tops, pants, and dresses to keep things comfy and chic!

Baby Shark Toys and Walker: The ‘Baby Shark’ craze doesn’t seem to be leaving us anytime soon. Wowwee, the brains behind ‘Fingerlings’ continue to create engaging toys for our little ones. We have a love/hate relationship with their line of singing shark characters, which will instantly burn that catchy tune into your brain! Plus, coming in October is their newest toy, a brand new Baby Shark inspired walker for baby.

Boon NURSH Silicone Bottles: Another Earth Day find, the Boon NURSH bottle system utilizes a special bagged venting system that is reusable. Ideal for preventing gas, easily squeeze the silicone pouch to remove any excess air before feeding your babe. Plus, all parts are dishwasher safe!

Skip Hop Greenwich Convertible Hip Pack: With Mother’s Day around the corner, we love this sleek take on the fanny pack. Great for travel, we love this new hands-free accessory to hold the essentials. Pair with a diaper bag for an excellent gift for any mama-to-be!

Please note that these opinions are 100% my own. I have not received any products in exchange for placement in What’s New on Gugu!

Maternity Pajamas for Pregnancy & Beyond

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

When it comes to pregnancy and postpartum style must-haves, maternity pajamas are an essential staple to your wardrobe. While it may seem like you can squeeze yourself into your pre-pregnancy pajamas for nine months, investing in a fantastic (and stylish) pair of maternity pajamas will make the journey of pregnancy through the “fourth trimester” so much more comfortable. Gugu Guru highly recommends Belabumbum’s Lounge Chic  Nursing Cami, Pant + Robe Set that can be worn for maternity, postpartum, and is nursing-friendly, as well. You’re going to want to bring your maternity pajamas to the hospital to deliver the baby, and if the pieces are breastfeeding friendly and comfy, it’s a win-win. (Plus you can grab some mommy and me selfies in the hospital, with their adorable sets.)

Belabumbum’s Lounge Chic  Nursing Cami, Pant + Robe Set is made with super-soft jersey and features piping and lace trim details. The Cami includes a built-in bra for support and one-handed clip for easy nursing access. The Cami is hip-length, giving you all the security and comfort you may need, and the curved hem adds a flattering detail to the maternity pajamas.

Maternity Pajamas The Robe overlaps in the front for coverage during and after pregnancy. If you’re looking for maternity pajamas that will transition into post-partum fashion, the robe is an essential staple, as you can comfortably wear it around the house, has easy access for breastfeeding, and will help keep you comfortable when those post-partum hormones cause lots of temperature changes.  The Belabumbum Lounge Chic pants feature a flat, non-roll elastic in the waist band, which is ideal for c-section mamas; they are full length pants with a lovely piping detail.

It is essential to have a pair of maternity pajamas that make you feel like you! Since you will be spending a lot of time at home when the baby is born, it is important for your maternity pajamas to be chic, soft, and super stretchy for your sensitive post-partum body. Belabumbum is ethically-sourced so you can feel good about your purchase too. The Lounge Chic collection is available in two colors, Chambray and Black, and includes a Maternity + Nursing Nightie + Robe Set. Use code GuguGuru for 15% off and free shipping!

Check out some of our other favorite must have maternity pajama essentials from Belabumbum:

Prairie Mama’s Baby Registry

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

We’re so excited to be featuring a Prairie Mama’s Registry curated by the amazingly lovely Stephanie Janz (@pocketfulofacorns). This Canadian mama of five lives life simply in the Canadian prairies and is here to share her top baby picks for a prairie mama and baby.

As a mother of five you learn a few things on the way. One lesson I have learned is that it is easier to get by with less. Less clothes, less stuff in general. With your first you can be bombarded by all the “must have lists”. And most of them have way too many things on them. When I got pregnant with my fifth, I really wanted to keep things simple. I bought him a simple wardrobe. Actually, everything he owns fits into one drawer. Despite keeping his clothes simple I love baby shoes! Sweet N Swag have adorable shoes that are adorable, affordable, and stay on! I also have a weakness for bonnets. I have a beautiful linen one for him from @aibileenandbabygirl. It’s light weight, but keeps his head warm too.

I partnered up with Gugu Guru to come up with my “simple prairie life” registry. Let me break it down for you.

First you need a place to sleep your baby. Whether or not you co-sleep, you need somewhere to sleep your baby during the day. I have a simple Moses basket where he sleeps during the day, when he lets me put him down! At night he starts out in his bassinet, then usually end up with me. Later when he grows out of it, I have a super simple crib from IKEA. You really don’t need the fanciest crib. For sleeping I have always swaddled my babies. They feel secure and sleep better. So some great muslin swaddles are a must! Lulujo Baby have super soft muslin swaddles. I love them.

Second you need some way of transporting your baby. I use a Graco car seat that goes up to 35lbs. I like to rear face my babies as long as I can. In the prairies you need a stroller with big wheels. There aren’t many paved roads around where I live and you need to have something that you can actually push around. So a good jogging stroller is a must for our family.

I also love baby wearing. It’s a life saver when out and about. Also great for at home. I can get little jobs done and he will often nap on me too. Win win. On my ring sling, I usually have a soother clip attached to keep it handy, and clean for when he needs it. I have a leather braided one from @madelines.box.

So there you have it! It really is possible to live simply with babies and children. I have found that it makes life a more simpler and easier to keep up with. And I need all the time I can get spending it with my family!

Hygge Baby Registry Ideas

by Gugu Guru

The Gugu Guru team is obsessed with a new concept this winter, “hygge” – have you heard of it? Hygge, pronounced HOO-gah, is the Danish word for cozy, and as the New York Times said in their recent piece on Hygge, “It is also a national manifesto, nay, an obsession expressed in the constant pursuit of homespun pleasures involving candlelight, fires, fuzzy knitted socks, porridge, coffee, cake and other people.” This cozy phenomenon is becoming more popular for families in America, and what’s a more hygge concept than a warm and cozy baby? We rounded up our favorite hygge baby products to help you get hygge with it! As the New York Times stated, “How to get hygge? Go home and stay there, preferably in your hyggekrog — a.k.a. “cozy nook” — wrapped in a blanket, drinking a cup of coffee…” We think all parents can roll with that idea!

Hygge Mama Ideas:

Bigelow Boots, Wool is Cool, $140; Slipper Socks, The Grommet, $20; Mama Bear Mug, $15; Calm Air Spray, The Good Home Co., $30; Calm Candle, The Good Home Co., $30; Rustic Pines Blanket, Glam Camp Shop, $79

Hygge Baby Ideas:

Baby Nordic Knitting Pilot Cap, Hanna Anderson, $10; Navy Cozie Baby Booties, Zutano, $21; Baby Nordic Ski Sweater Set, Hanna Anderson, $29; Baby Sherpa Lined Gnome Sweater, Hanna Anderson, $29; Medium Bashful Polar Bear By Jellycat, Hanna Anderson, $23

Date Night At Home With Erin Ziering

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

We are so excited today to feature a guest post from the lovely mama of two, Erin Ziering! Erin and her husband Ian, along with their two little ladies, are the adorable family behind the wonderful lifestyle blog, At Home With the Zierings. Erin is here today to discuss how parents can have date night at home, even with sleeping kiddos upstairs!

You can follow Erin on Instagram, and check out their Facebook page, too.

EZ1_8542

We need more date nights. Any typical night, after the kids are asleep at 7pm, I am sitting on the couch with a fresh glass of wine and turn on one of the 4 shows we are currently watching. Ian is on his phone finishing up emails and texts from his day. I am wearing old sweats and my hair is in a top knot. I shower the girls before they go to bed, so I usually will have jumped in with them. My makeup is off.  Ian is most likely in his boxers. He just fully retires from his clothes at the end of the day. We are most likely exhausted. We have been exhausted since my first pregnancy. Some times we hardly talk at night. We sit quietly looking at the television until I finally say I am going to bed. (Usually around 9pm) Does this sound familiar? (Editor’s note: Uh, yes!)

I hope we are not alone.

I worry sometimes about keeping our marriage fresh. I worry that I am not the girl he used to date. The fun spunky, spontaneous girl that was always ready for a date. (I also look at him and remember he is not the same as well.) I want the love to still be exciting. I want the sparks that we feel when we are away from the kids and out of the house. Our date nights out are so romantic. I have rules. No movies, because we already sit and ignore each other enough in front of our TV. No place that stinks because it just loses the romance. A place where we can dress up. It is always nice to still impress the one you love. It also has to have music. We love to dance.

After about 6 months of having a new baby I realized I needed to find a way to mimic this at home. To create a space in our home where we could be engaged and feel passionate. With a few added outdoor lights, some cozy blankets and being away from the TV we have found ways to engage. Since sitters are expensive and not always possible we have set aside date nights at home to truly enjoy each others time. Think about when you were first dating and he would invite you over in the evening. You would do your hair and get ready to have fun and enjoy each others company.  Our date nights at home we treat just like going out! Here are some of my favorite date night at home tips.

Recreate your favorite bar:  Ian and I love going to a dark, cozy pub. I recreate this setting at home by pulling out some of our favorite game boards and placing some nuts on the table. With some candles lit for ambiance, and a couple of dark beers we enjoy our night laughing and playing games.

image

Patio romance: Sometimes we just need to completely remove ourselves from technology. When I notice we have both had a lot of work I set up our outdoor patio with some cozy blankets where we can watch the sun set and the stars. Without our phones or TV we can enjoy conversation. We catch up on our days and just talk about everything going on in our lives and what we hope to happen. There is something about laying under the stars that often encourages us to talk about our dreams.

image (1)

More than hair and makeup, more than a pretty dress, being engaged is the most important part of the evening. Find a way to communicate as adults. It may just be about the baby, it may be about the house. Whatever it is, you have to be engaged. We so often go about our daily life, walking past each other and moving through the parenting depths. Finding a way to stop and communicate will remind you why you are in love. Slowing down and putting the electronics down can make such a difference for a night in. I hope you find a way to enjoy your new world at home, with the little one quietly sleeping upstairs remember to still set aside a few nights just for each other.

Considered Casual

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

This week’s look actually came about after speaking to moms about their style and showing them the super casual side of our style spectrum (Comfort Is King) and then our middle of the road style that is a perfect balance of glam and practicality (Chic And On The Go).  So many moms saw these looks and said that their style is somewhere in between because they’re casual but a bit more chic… a bit more “thoughtful” or considered. Thus Considered Casual was born.
_CPB5217x-lowres
Considered Casual at its core is still a very comfortable approach but tends to be presented as a more layered and textured look.  While Comfort Is King may use more neutral tones and everyday basic pieces, Considered Casual is not afraid of colors or patterns.

Even though the style is a notch up on our style spectrum, Considered Casual is still a relaxed approach. Mommy model Amanda is very comfortable in this super soft tank and graphic boho-inspired pants.
_CPB5222xx-lowres
For this look, we love a sling – a baby carrier that can definitely make a fashion statement.  Here Amanda is rocking the Joovy BabaSling.
_CPB5238x-lowres
There are so many great things about this sling (like the easy quick release buckle that will not wake up a sleeping baby!) but the feature we love the most on the Joovy BabaSling is the extra padded shoulder pad that ensures comfort for mom, even while baby grows and gets heavier. It’s 100% machine washable; important for this style, which still relies heavily on practicality.

On The Go Style

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

One thing is certain about motherhood, you will need to leave the house eventually and, when you do, you will need to carry things… LOTS of things… for baby. You’ll be toting diapers, bottles, an outfit change (maybe two!) and more. Having a baby, especially a newborn, makes it a challenge to use a compact or small bag.  However, there is a light at the end of the tunnel – as your baby grows and needs less stuff, your “on the go” style can evolve.

We love the Fiona mini cross-body diaper bag from Baby Cargo (seen here in poppin’ Cool Aqua) — especially for moms of tots who still need to haul around things but not quite as much.

Fiona

The genius thing about this bag is that you can expand it and use the grommets to slide over your stroller handles OR snap on to your deluxe stroller handle bar using the strap snaps.
Fiona Bag

Of course wearing black is a smart move because it’s oh so genius at hiding the “hiccups” (literally and figuratively) that can happen in a day in the life of a typical mom but a graphic accessory, like this houndstooth infinity scarf can take your all black attire from potentially drab to certainly fab. (These scarves are also great for in-between seasons.)
