When it comes to breastfeeding and dressing up for work or events, we get so many questions about how to do both. Luckily, we’re here to tell you that breastfeeding and looking amazing are not mutually exclusive concepts! We rounded up some of our favorite nursing friendly apparel, plus some handy ways to breastfeed and still feel in style.

It features mesh under arms and back releases heat and a support belt. We love how stylish the NuRoo Pocket looks, and when it comes to breastfeeding, it’s wonderful to have baby close – plus, skin-to-skin contact is known to increase milk supply, so the NuRoo Pocket can help keep you stylish, close to baby, and improving your milk supply. The NuRoo Pocket is machine washable, too!

All of their clothes are meant to be effortless; to be slipped on without any fuss. Maia Moda will be donating 20% of their sales to UNICEF (an affiliate of the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action) during World Breastfeeding Week.

Covered Goods multi-use nursing covers give you all the benefits that the traditional covers do… and more! The nursing cover also functions as a car seat cover, scarf, and shopping cart cover. When breastfeeding, it provides true all over coverage in the front and back, is super soft, and takes seconds to put on and take off. It features a flexible neck that can be worn down under one arm and also allows you to peek in to make sure your little one has latched properly, and can be folded very small and in any fashion for storage. With Covered Goods™ you can truly nurse anytime, anywhere!

Maternity Style: Urban Boho Mama

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

We’re sharing our favorite maternity looks for mama style; today’s look is the Urban Boho Mama! What does that mean, exactly? The term boho comes from bohemian which refers to the retro hippie style like you’d have seen on dreamers, activists, and artists from the beat generation. However, the urban boho look refers to a little more of a polished twist on the boho look – still comfortable with lots of flowers and flow, just a little more cleaned up and streamlined. The urban boho trend is super popular all across the country right now, so we rounded up some style ideas for maternity looks.

1. Navy Paisley Tie Front Maternity Maxi Dress; 2. Peach Floral Off Shoulder Maternity Maxi Dress; 3. Grey Floral Off Shoulder Maternity Maxi Dress; 4. Heather Grey Off Shoulder Ruffle Trim Maternity Maxi Dress; 5. Teal Floral Chiffon Long Sleeve V-Neck Maternity Maxi Dress; 6. Light Blue Rose Off Shoulder Maternity Maxi Dress

When it comes to shoes, you’re going to want something cute (duh), but also without straps, laces, or ties, as it’s pretty hard to bend over and see your own feet when you’re super pregnant. We love these urban boho shoes because they’re sturdy, beautiful, and neutral colors.

1. Brown Faux Leather Cutout Overlay Boot; 2. Olive Strapped Ankle Boot; 3. Black Faux Leather Cutout Bootie; 4. Black Solid Faux Suede Boots

1. Babymel Grace Faux Leather Satchel Diaper Bag, Tan; 2. Arrows Weekender Bag by White Elm – Large Diaper Tote (budget find!); 3. KF Baby Bohemian Diaper Bag Value Set (budget find!); 4. timi & leslie Charlie 7-Piece Diaper Bag Set

Angelique All Day: Maternity Workout Clothing

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

We are so excited to introduce you to pregnant mama, and new guest blogger, actress Angelique Cabral! Angelique is best known for her role as Colleen on CBS’ Life In Pieces, but is no newcomer to the Hollywood scene. She recently found out she is having a little girl this fall and Gugu Guru is thrilled to help her with her registry; Angelique will be guest blogging on Gugu Guru all about pregnancy and new mom life – welcome, Ang!
(PS. The amazing drawing of Angelique above is from Lane Paper Works!)

Hiiiiiiieeeeee! First, you should know a bit about me: I am an actress, currently starring on the CBS sitcom, “Life in Pieces.” I play a quirky, hot mess girl named Colleen, who is based at this point almost entirely on me, ha! As an actress, social media is a huge part of who I am and what I do, and this new invention of #snapchat and #insta-story (I’m old so to me it seems like the cool new thing) has really been a game changer. I find it’s a way to relate directly to my audience and share a bit of my daily life with the world. If you follow me (you can follow Angelique on Insta here), you will see that I’m a hot mess and that I am probably just like you!! I run out of gas! I love coupons! I love rosé #AllllllDay!!!

So I figured why not do this with my pregnancy? The first few months were torture, trying to “hide” it on social media, especially when I drink pretty much whenever I am allowed to or is socially acceptable. And this was the first thing my fans noticed: the absence of wine and/or a margarita in my hand!! Yikes!! But then I came out with my pregnancy in a cute Gender Reveal video that ET did, and the rest is history. I am now free to share every last amazing, magical, disgusting, real detail of my pregnancy! Lucky you!!

Now, the first thing that was a concern for me, as an actress and also as a vain (mid) 30-something who is always on a diet trying to lose those last 5 lbs, was MY WORKOUTS!!! What was I gonna do now that I was pregnant?! I scoured the internet (more on that later, but it’s dangerous and I just spiral deep) and overall it said to take it easy and not do hard core workouts; that it can affect the baby, you can bleed, etc. They basically treat pregnancy as a handicap. The problem with this is that I am very hard core. Like, my whole life, I have jumped from one hard core activity to another: marathons, Kung Fu, Bikram, Hot Vinyasa, cross fit etc. Since college I have worked out 5 to 6 days a week, often double workouts. It makes me feel good but also allows me to eat/drink pretty much whatever i want which let’s be honest is the point (wink!).

So instead of living in fear,  I listened to my doctor and my trainers at Tracy Anderson, and kept doing what I have been doing for the last 3 years: 2 hour workouts in roughly 87 degree rooms with 80% humidity. Hard core!! I also have incorporated intense hiking (my fave is Fryman Canyon in LA) and walking around my neighborhood, at least 5 miles a day.  Cause bottom line, Mommy has to go back to shooting her TV show roughly 2 weeks after giving birth, so I can’t just not workout! It’s simply not an option!! So I’ve kept doing what I’ve been doing, and guess what?! I’m fine! My pregnancy has been perfect! Baby is amazing! And no GD, no preeclampsia, no swelling! And I feel amazing! [editor’s note: this is Angelique’s fitness plan, which she mapped out with her doctor – please consult your doctor if you’re pregnant and would like to know more about working out!]

Except in my workout clothes (womp womp).

Ya. My clothes don’t fit. Like, not at all. Like somehow, overnight, my tight little body just expanded. The first thing that became a real problem, real quick were my boobs. They took on a life of their own. They were HUGE. Like, I’m normally a full A cup or maybe small B, but my overnight by boobs FELL OUT OF MY SPORTS BRAS and I’m looking at a D! and then my rib cage expanded roughly 4 inches so no shirts or tanks fit and I was miserable in my workouts.

Then my growing belly betrayed my workout pants. I thought for sure I would be okay in my LuLuLemons until at least the 3rd trimester. I mean, the whole point of $120 dollar spandex is to stretch right? WRONG. There is, in fact, a maximum they stretch and they were uncomfortable almost immediately, pushing into my abdomen, making any workout torture.

Ingrid and Isabel Tank Top + Leggings

But then, miracle of all miracles,  I discovered my saving graces, Belly Bandit, Boob, Bravado Designs, and Ingrid and Isabel. Against my will, I gave in to “maternity” workout gear, and haven’t looked back.

Here’s the 411 on bras: Bravado Ballet Bra and Body Silk Seamless Yoga Nursing Bra are my fave for just life. They are comfy and make you feel feminine and human and not like an overstuffed cow.  I am obsessed with the Boob Designs sports/nursing bra ’cause let me tell you, it keeps the girls IN and TIGHT and gives you great cleavage. Boob also has an amazing long spandex nursing tank top that I wear almost every day. Even though I’m not nursing yet, it fits better than anything I’ve found and makes me feel cute during my workouts, which let’s be honest, is why we all workout, ha!!

(left) Ingrid and Isabel Pants, (right) Boob Designs Tank Top and Belly Bandit Leggings

Now for leggings: Belly Bandit leggings are my dream. They are supportive and cool and comfy for daily wear, and makes my growing belly feel and look so cute!! For my hard core workouts, I love Ingrid and Isabel workout leggings, they are thicker and really hold you in while doing cardio, and they have this cute V in the back that is sexy and fun! I literally get compliments on them every time I wear them. They also have this fold down option if you want your belly to be on display so you can show it off. But during my workouts I prefer to keep it up and protect my belly. Ingrid and Isabel also has a full line of tanks and dresses that I have been living in, even to events and red carpets! (Sidenote: I’m a big fan of “body con” during pregnancy, it shows off you bump and makes you look less humungous if you wear tight fitting clothes vs. baggy stuff).

So, there ya go. My first blog!! That wasn’t so bad!!! I hope it was fun and helpful to y’all since let’s be honest, we are all just doing our best, trying to figure our growing bodies out. I’m 27 weeks in, and every day there are new surprises and I can’t wait to share them all with you. It really helps being able to chat it out, and I’m excited to hear from you! Tweet me or tag me on insta and tell me whatcha think of my workout picks, and tell me your faves!
Til next time!

Mom + Baby Style Gift Ideas for Summer

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

-Sponsored Post-

With summer heating up, we wanted to share some great style gift ideas for baby showers this summer. Did you know it’s now a very popular trend to gift your best mom friend with a shower dress for her baby shower? Check out the ideas below and don’t forget to add these to your registry, too!

Mayarya is known for their cutting edge fashion designs for maternity and nursing wear. Made with soft, luxurious fabrics sourced from the best suppliers in the world, Mayarya collections offer investment pieces that are comfortable yet modern in design for women to enjoy before, during and after pregnancy. Founded by a mother (of course), Reika Kato Shetty, she uses her attention to fine details that are intrinsic to her Japanese background, experience of working for trendsetting boutiques in New York and Los Angeles to create unique pieces that every expectant mother is going to find refreshing.

We’re currently loving these four looks:

  • Tropical Leaf Maternity and Nursing Romper (left): Keep it playful in this tropical romper. The summery print is exclusively made by British designer Victoria Leigh. It features added popper buttons for ease of taking it on and off – and of course for nursing ability. Whether you have a bump or not, the elasticated waist and drawstring make it easy to adjust.
  • Eva Cape Maternity Dress (second from left): This limited edition dress is a sophisticated statement piece. Feel completely chic as the emerald green material drapes over your shoulders. The light material will keep you feeling fantastically fresh during pregnancy and even post bump.
  • Carmen Racerback Maternity and Nursing Dress (third from left): The little black number that all women need in their closet. A limited edition piece that’s easily styled and immensely flattering. The ruches down the side ensure a sleek silhouette and instant confidence. What makes this dress even more impressive is the discreet nursing access. There’s a hidden nursing cover inside the stretchy neckline that makes the process as seamless as possible.
  • Dikla Off the Shoulder Maternity and Nursing Dress (right): This limited edition dress flows in all the right ways, giving it that dramatic charm. It’s everything you want when it comes to femininity. The material is silky smooth and the elasticated top makes nursing a breeze. Just adjust the belt to suit your needs, bump or not.

And for the little one, we’re big fans of Smockingbird Children’s Clothing for unique and adorable summer wear! Smockingbird’s mission is to create stylish and unique, yet affordable clothing for babies and children. Smockingbird has a unique selling style in that they use a pre-order style of selling which allows them to keep costs low. Here are some of our favorite summer picks for your little ones:

  • Apple A Day Applique Bloomer Set (left): Adorable blue bloomer set with 3 applique apples on the top, and one on the bloomer bottoms! Tie closure in the back of the shirt. Elastic waist and leg openings on bloomers.
  • Apple A Day Applique Bubble (second from left): Light blue bubble with red trim. Buttons on the front and metal snaps in stride. Applique apple on front. Would look adorable for the first day of preschool with his initials!

DIY Yoga Mat With See Kate Sew

by Gugu Guru 5 Comments

See Kate Sew partners with Gugu Guru once again to share a fantastic DIY tutorial.  This time? A lovely yoga mat for postpartum (and anytime) yoga. Want to check out more DIY projects from Kate? Click over to see the full list – lots of fun summer project ideas!

Mermaid leggings!? You heard that right! These super stretchy yoga leggings have a tiny mermaid scale print all over in magical colors! I have wanted mermaid leggings forever and these are amazing! I’m also wearing the matching tank bra from Teeki. Teeki has so many cute activewear prints and styles!

I’m wearing the Mermaid Hot Pants in purple and Mermaid Tank in teal. Today I’m sharing a DIY Yoga Mat tutorial that you can sew yourself! The best part about a DIY yoga mat is that you can choose cute fabric prints to match your yoga pants! 😉 I chose two black and white fabrics, one knit, one canvas. New workout clothes and accessories is the perfect way to motivate yourself after having a baby and I love yoga in the postpartum period because it’s generally low impact and can be easily adapted to how you’re feeling! I always leave a yoga session feeling better body and mind!

Materials //

-Fabric for top

  • Choose any fabric for the top of the yoga mat! I’m using a medium weight knit. I chose this because it’s cute, but also it is a soft fabric that will be nice to perform yoga on!

-Fabric for bottom

  • I’m using a heavyweight canvas for the bottom of the yoga mat. This type of fabric is easier to brush off than a more clingy cotton. The surface won’t really be wipeable, but you can dust it off.

-Interfacing

Instructions //

Use a 1/2″ seam allowance.

  • Cut out two pieces of fabric 25″ by 69″, one from your top layer and one from your bottom layer.
  • Cut a piece of lightweight fusible interfacing the same size.
  • Cut out 2 pieces of fabric 3.5″ by 56″ for a tie.

All done! Now pull up your mermaid pants and get your yoga on!

Editor’s Picks: Mother’s Day Gift Guide Featuring Tiny Tags

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

-Sponsored Post –

It seems as though there are never enough ideas for the perfect gift for mom for Mother’s Day; since the Gugu Guru team sees quite a large number of ideas cross our desks, we thought it would be fun to ask our team what they are hoping for this Mother’s Day!

Olivia, Gugu Guru’s Editor-in-Chief: Tiny Tags Jewelry – So, true confession, I already have a Tiny Tags necklace (see above, those are my boys’ names), but I’m obsessed with Tiny Tags. Seems I’m not alone either; Nicole Phelps is a big fan (we love her double sided personalized necklace), as is Tiffany Theissen, Selma Blair and Ceci New York. Tiny Tags creates gorgeous and stylish jewelry for moms which are also incredibly meaningful. Whether it is the date you first laid eyes on your firstborn, or all of your children’s names, or the time your baby was born, Tiny Tags turns memories into heirloom jewelry pieces. With a ton of styles to choose from, as well as gold or silver, you’re sure to find a unique gift for the women in your life this Mother’s Day.

So, why do I want another Tiny Tags if I have one? I’ll be honest – it’s a selfish reason. First off, I love how lightweight and easy to wear these are. I wear mine with every outfit, whether I’m dressing up or down. Secondly, although I have one necklace with my boys’ names on it, I would love individual necklaces with their name and birth time on them. Why? Because, of all the things I remember about giving birth to my sons, I cannot for the life of me remember the time they were born. What better way to remember than on a gorgeous gold chain? Tiny Tags is the ultimate Mother’s Day gift for any pregnant mama, new mom, grandma, aunt, or best mom friend. The last day for free shipping is May 2nd, so get shopping!

Shana, Gugu Guru’s Director of Content Marketing: Leather Tote, The Flourish Market – I’ve had my eye on this Joyn India leather tote that I spotted at local boutique, The Flourish Market, which partners with 40 brands that provide dignified jobs to vulnerable people. The super stylish bag is large enough to be my diaper bag without being unwieldy and is entirely handcrafted! It will be my Mother’s Day gift to myself, so I can feel a bit more Shana and a little less mommy, but still be socially responsible.

Monica Banks, Gugu Guru’s Founder: Phillip Ashley Chocolates – This is Olivia – speaking for Monica here – but, I’m going to reveal something about Monica to the world. If you mention the word “chocolate” around Monica, her arms start flailing wildly and she excitedly asks, “have you tried Phillip Ashley Chocolates?!” So, when we asked her what she wanted this Mother’s Day, it came as no surprise to the Gugu Gang that she responded with a two word answer: Phillip Ashley. And, of course, you can see why! Aren’t those chocolates gorgeous? Based in Memphis, Tennessee, Phillip Ashley handcrafts all of the chocolates in his design studio. Phillip Ashley has been named one of the Best Chocolatiers and Confectioners in America by TasteTV. Not only would these chocolates bring joy to any mom, grandma, aunt, or friend this Mother’s Day, but they make such a gorgeous piece of art, too!

Thank you to Tiny Tags for making this sponsored post possible.

New Mama Gift Ideas

by Gugu Guru 2 Comments

We wanted to take a moment and throw some ideas out there for all of you new mamas. You know who you are: the ones who haven’t slept or showered, and barely had time to brush your teeth recently…we rounded up some gifts we think you will love this Mother’s Day – read on to learn all about these awesome mama must haves.

Karen Neuburger Dot Capri Pajama Set: We’re swooning over this two-piece pajama set from the lovely Karen Neuburger. The top is perfect for breastfeeding in the middle of the night (and all day, let’s be honest here), and the pants have a very stretchy waist, so you can wear them post-partum and beyond. The pink retro dot is really adorable and makes them perfect PJs to wear all day long. Also, they are cropped pants, which means you won’t be tripping over yourself to pick up a screaming baby. Safety and style first! (Head to the bottom of the post to win a pair of Dot Pajamas)

Babo Botanicals: The Gugu Guru team are huge fans of Babo Botanicals. Babo Botanicals are known for creating everything from sunscreen to shampoo to lip tint, all super safe for everyone, including kids, breastfeeding moms, and pregnant mamas. They believe “beauty starts on a farm and moves to the face. And hair. And skin. And lips. Natural solutions that make you feel good – on your body and in your spirit.” As we head into summer, we highly recommend stocking up on Babo Botanicals sunscreens – they make a wonderful addition to your Mother’s Day gift basket! They also have a Newborn Essentials kit, which is an essential baby shower gift. (Head to the bottom of the post to win a beach bag chock full of Summer and Hair Care Essentials: Swim and Sport Shampoo, Swim and Sport Conditioner, Clear Zinc Continuous Sunscreen Spray, SPF 30, Beach Bag, Lip Tint Conditioner, Super Shield, SPF 50)

Pearhead Baby Album: What better gift to get a new mama than a baby album for recording memories? In the age of digital photography, we often forget how pleasant it is to sit down and leaf through an album. The Pearhead baby books and albums leave lots of room for mama to jot down notes, insert photos, and share all her memories. Believe us, those early days of parenthood are forgotten fast, so record it all! These gorgeous albums and books make wonderful Mother’s Day gifts for any new mama. (Head to the bottom of the post to win a baby album)

NappieSack: What if there were a way to continue using all of your old handbags, even when you’re toting around a baby? There is with the NappieSack! NappieSack is an organizational insert which turns any handbag into a very efficient diaper bag. With over 15 pockets in the bag, there is enough room for diapers, wipes, toys, bottles, breast pump parts, and even your sunglasses, sunscreen, and a snack. If you’re heading out for summertime adventures with a baby, the NappieSack is perfect for traveling, as it holds all the essentials and you don’t need to lug around a heavy bag. NappieSack is a perfect present idea because it is a smart investment; after baby is all grown up, mama can use the bag to organize her gym gear, work essentials, pack for a trip, and more. If you head to the NappieSack website, you can even have it monogrammed just for mom. (Head to the bottom of the post to enter to win a NappieSack).

Tervis Wine Glasses: Ahh, the joy of having a glass of wine at the end of the day! Know what’s not joyous? Breaking a glass. Gugu Guru always loves products which mom and dad can enjoy and are also safe for baby-life. These Tervis wine glasses are plastic, and very durable. Even if you just fill the wine glass with SpinDrift, you’ll still feel fancy drinking out of these. (Head to the bottom of the post for a chance to win 2 Tervis plastic wine glasses).

skinnytees: After you have a baby, there’s this awkward time when you don’t fit into maternity clothing, but your old regular clothes feel so weird on your skin. Luckily, skinnytees is to the rescue! Their butter soft shirts are one-size-fits-all (hurrah!) and are so super stretchy that they will fit your post-partum body and beyond. Their tank tops are perfect for summertime and layering all year round, and their t-shirts and long-sleeved shirts feel like a soft second skin on your new mama body. Plus, they’re ideal for breastfeeding since they can be pulled every which way and not change shape. skinnytees has partnered with Upward Bound House, whose mission is to eliminate homelessness among families with children in Los Angeles by providing housing, support, and advocacy; this Mother’s Day, skinnytees is giving away one skinnytee to a mother in need for every one item purchased from their website until May 9th. They will be hand delivering the skinnytees to the mamas in need for Mother’s Day. (Head to the bottom of the post to win $50 to skinnytees)

April Showers Style for Rainy Days

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

April showers bring May flowers, right? Well, we rounded up our favorite April showers style picks for mama and baby. You don’t have to stay inside on rainy days, as long as you’re prepared, have fun jumping in the puddles with your little one!

3-in-1 Maternity Parka, Seraphine: This ingenious maternity coat is faux-fur lined throughout the body, with drawstring ties at the hemline and empire waist for a fit that’s flattering, flexible and fully adjustable throughout your nine months. The soft cotton outer is treated with a water-resistant coating to keep you and your bump warm and dry whatever the weather. After baby is born, simply zip on the kangaroo panel at the front to fit easily over your baby sling or front carrier. Also lined in soft faux-fur, the baby wearing insert features a section for baby’s feet, and can be worn open or zipped all the way up to protect baby from the elements.

Color Changing Raincoat, Holly and Beau: This toddler raincoat is not only adorable (they have a variety of ridiculously cute designs), but get this – it changes color when it’s wet! This pack away kids raincoat magically changes color when it comes into contact with water, returning to the original color once dry. This exciting process is repeated each time. It provides great lightweight protection against the elements and can be neatly stowed away in a convenient bag attached to the back of the coat.

Baby Rainboots, Bogs: Bogs is known for their sturdy footwear with adorable designs. Their baby boots come in a plethora of cool designs. They are 100% waterproof and made from 3mm Neo-Tech™ insulation with a plush cozy lining. They’re also machine washable and feature easy pull-on handles.

What’s a rainy day without some cute onesies? We love this umbrella onesie and rain cloud one, too.

Infants’ and Toddlers’ Discovery Rain Jacket, LL Bean: Every baby and toddler must have a classic LL Bean rain slicker! Isn’t that written in to some sort of baby law somewhere? This rain jacket, which runs from 6 months through 4T comes in 4 bright colors and is perfect for rainy day adventures.

Stroll + Go On-Call Hand Muff, Skip Hop: No need to worry about getting your hands and phone wet if you get trapped in the rain! Baby may be covered in the stroller, but now your phone and hands can be covered too. Talk, text and stay toasty with this fleece-lined, water-resistant stroller hand muff. It features an innovative clear zip pocket that lets you see and operate your phone through the window, with a special port for headphones. Securely attach it to any stroller with the snap-together tabs so you can stay warm and “on call” as you stroll.
