Coraline and Us: Ewan the Dream Sheep

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

We’re thrilled to have Liz from Coraline and Us back today to share about Coraline’s love for Ewan the Dream Sheep – have you ever heard of Ewan the Dream Sheep? You can find Liz on her blog, Facebook, and Instagram.

“Ooh you’ll have to get a Ewan the Sheep,” said a teacher (with a young baby at home) at a Conference I was attending. I hadn’t heard of ‘Ewan the Dream Sheep’ but I was seven months pregnant at the time and promptly wrote it down. He said his baby loved Ewan at bedtime.

You press each of Ewan’s four feet and they play white noise, a bit like the sound of the mother’s womb, for a good number of minutes and then the noise switches itself off.

Before Coraline was born I read two books which I love: “The Baby Whisperer Solves All Your Problems (By Teaching You How to Ask the Right Questions)” by Tracey Hogg with Melinda Blau and “Bringing Up Bebé” by Pamela Druckerman.

Bringing up Bébé is by an American woman who was living in Paris when pregnant with her daughter and there’s a chapter called “doing her nights” where she looks at why “having a baby who sleeps through the night early on seems to be the norm in France.”

One thing I found fascinating in that chapter was where she says, “they almost all say that in the early months, they kept their babies with them in the light during the day, even for naps, and put them to bed in the dark at night.” I read this in conjunction with the Baby Whisperer book which talks about routine (eat, activity, sleep) and not interrupting a baby during sleep cycles when you put them down for a nap. We had intended to do this before Coraline was born, even before we discovered on the day she was born that she had Down Syndrome.

I later read a book called “Babies with Down Syndrome: A New Parents Guide” by Susan J. Skallerup which friends with a baby with Down Syndrome recommended to us when Coraline was born. It talks about the importance of routine for babies with Down Syndrome. They feel safe, and they know what is coming next, so that they have the best platform from which to develop as for them hard work goes into movement and eating and so on (due to lower muscle tone). The book explains that their mental and social development is also maximized by their stable environment.

I expressed breastmilk for seven months after Coraline was born as she was unable to latch on, so in fact routine was easy for us as she would do: eat, activity and then sleep in that order. When she was very small it was a case of putting her down for her nap when she first yawned downstairs in her cot in the light, and then upstairs in the dark at 7pm. We did begin putting her to sleep in her bassinet lid on a cot stand in her first weeks but then a helpful lady from our Portage suggested that actually she should have a proper cot/crib as otherwise it would be confusing with her and she wouldn’t know if she was going to sleep or going for a walk. We thought that was really interesting and did that.

Coraline has slept through the night since she was about seven weeks old. So was it luck or design? Who knows? She sleeps 7pm-7am and once she’s asleep, she’s sound asleep. You can walk and talk in the room and I’m always fascinated by that. It was quite ironic; for a time, I’d be getting up to pump milk in the night, and Coraline wouldn’t be (as you have to pump a certain number of times to maintain supply until you hit 12 weeks). Perhaps it’s because for her daytime naps she would sleep with noise all around downstairs.

Enter Ewan. At each of these daytime naps and for bedtime we’d sit him by her cot – as part of the nap and bedtime routine. He is a familiar sound which signals to her it’s naptime or bedtime. I actually think we probably love him more than Coraline as he’s part of our routine. It’s quite funny – until she was eight months old or so, she’d lie in one position on her back in the cot and Ewan would be humming away at the foot of the cot. Now she’s got so mobile swirling around in the cot when she goes to sleep that Ewan is not safe if he’s in there – she has him in her hands, chewing his ears and so on, chasing him. So, we now sit him up on the side of the cot playing his sounds.

As she got older Coraline didn’t really nap so well on her own in the day and we would take her out in the pram and sling, until we realized that wasn’t really a sustainable thing for naptimes, as we never had a chance to get things done. So at about 8-9 months we conquered it so that she would nap alone early in the morning upstairs in her cot, through dedication! But that’s another story. It does go to show that she is lively and alert. She is inquisitive and exploring in the day and often resists daytime sleep, but is as good as gold at 7pm at night. She self settles and is asleep within 10 minutes.

If ever we are away for the night, we bring Ewan, and he gives consistency. We had thought she might have had an operation on her heart in her first few months, but she has not had this yet as they are waiting until she is bigger. We would bring Ewan for a sense of home to this. Coraline is fine without him too, which is full credit to her, but I think for us he’s all part of the routine, and she loves him.

Comfortable and Chic Nursing and Maternity Wear: Kindred Bravely

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

When it comes to maternity and breastfeeding-friendly pajamas, bras, and underwear, it can be difficult to find options which are comfortable and will make you feel great about yourself. Kindred Bravely is your one-stop-shop for maternity and nursing-friendly bras, underwear, pajamas and more; they exquisitely combine comfortable and functional pieces with style and detail. Mary Ware, of the Mom Friend blog is due soon with her second baby and got the chance to try out some of Kindred Bravely’s most popular styles. You can find Mary on her blog and Instagram.

Kindred Bravely is unique in that all of their clothing and accessories are designed by moms for moms; only a mom would know that postpartum skin is super sensitive and a bra needs to be as soft as soft can be – which is why their nursing and maternity bras are one-of-a-kind! Kindred Bravely’s clothing feature tiny – but important – details to make motherhood easier.  With soft, premium fabrics and flattering silhouettes, Kindred Bravely combines the coziness moms deserve with the versatility you need. You’ll feel so comfortable, you’ll want to wear these clothes day and night. Kindred Bravely also has adorable accessories, like organic nursing pads, and non-skid socks ideal for labor and delivery (check out all the cute sayings on them!).

Mary tried out the French Terry Racerback Nursing & Sleep Bra (in mint); the simple crossover front design and stretchy fabric make a super comfy nursing and sleep bra with easy one-handed pull-aside breastfeeding access and gentle support. It is the ideal choice for night-time support and keeping breast pads in place. This bra is also a great choice for walking, yoga, or anytime you want light support and comfort. Whether breastfeeding, pregnant, or none-of-the-above, you will enjoy the comfort and style this bra offers and pull it from your drawer time and time again.

The Louisa Ultra High-Waisted Maternity & Pregnancy Leggings can be worn day and night, from your first trimester all the way to delivery day. The versatile style makes them perfect for layering with your favorite maternity tops and tanks; they provide gentle smoothing, comfortably adjusting to your changing body. Plus, nursing moms love pairing these leggings with their favorite nursing bras, allowing for greater coverage and modesty whether breastfeeding in public or just in the company of friends and family.  The soft, stretchy waistband rises over a baby bump or postpartum tummy, ensuring that it won’t dig in to your belly or irritate your C-section incision. Whether you wear them day or night, the leggings will become an essential part of your wardrobe: a staple part of any capsule collection, perfect for wearing with shirts, dresses, camisoles, and sweaters.

See what she has to say here:

Newborn and Kangaroo Care Must Haves

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

What is kangaroo care? Think of it as a mama kangaroo putting her baby in her pocket. There are two things it seems that most newborn babies love: skin-to-skin contact with mom and being swaddled to sleep. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends daily skin-to-skin sessions throughout the first three months of a baby’s life; they make an evidence-based claim that to receive all the benefits, mom and baby need to stay skin-to-skin for 60 uninterrupted minutes…but, who has that much time to sit with a baby on her chest? While we’d love to stay on the couch or bed all day with a new baby, there are often dishes to wash, work to be done, and oh – other kids to tend to, also! When it comes to swaddles, swaddling is known to calm a baby’s Moro Reflex, which is an involuntary response to excessive sensual stimulus, in which the baby feels like he or she is falling; this reflex can wake a baby up out of sleep, so swaddling comforts baby, and almost feels like he or she is back in the womb – snug and sound. This is why the Gugu Guru team is so passionate about NuRoo Baby and their innovative NuRoo Pocket shirt and NuRoo Swaddler.

kangaroo care

The NuRoo Pocket Shirt, which comes both in short sleeve and long sleeve, is revolutionary kangaroo care in that it’s designed for hands-free skin-to-skin contact. Created using NuRoo’s signature fabric, the NuRoo Pocket allows you to spend more time skin-to-skin, as you can keep baby close and still use your hands! Designed to go on like a shirt, the NuRoo Pocket carrier eliminates wrapping, tying and knotting to make babywearing simple as can be. Their signature fabric is incredibly soft for even the most sensitive of baby’s skin, and the NuRoo uses flat lock stitching to make the design feel seamless so there aren’t any big chunky, uncomfortable seams chafing you and your peanut.

Another reason we suggest all moms register for the NuRoo Pocket Carrier is that as your postpartum body changes and your baby grows, the adjustable closures give you the perfect fit every time. The technical properties of the fabric keep you and baby cozy, so you can spend more time skin-to-skin. NuRoo also recognized that postpartum hormones can make mamas hot all the time, so the breathable, moisture-wicking fabric keeps you and baby cool and dry. With kangaroo care, you’ll naturally build heat wearing baby skin-to-skin, but the moisture is pulled out and released from the fabric, so your carrier won’t feel sweaty or wet.

kangaroo care

The NuRoo Pocket Carrier is machine washable, so you can simply throw it in with your regular laundry. And, it’s great to know that the NuRoo Pocket is the first and only skin-to-skin kangaroo care carrier to adhere to the sling/carrier standards, passing retention testing up to 45 pounds. Furthermore, The NuRoo Pocket has been acknowledged as a “hip healthy” product by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute, meaning that baby is in the proper M position making it ergonomic, and safe for baby’s hips. We think the NuRoo Pocket is a total must-have essential for Newborn Lockdown; just think: you can still have your hands for an iced tea in one hand, your phone in the other, and a your baby snug on your chest!

We’ve written about how much we love the NuRoo Swaddler before, and we highly recommend it to anyone building a Gugu Guru baby registry. Designed by two moms who wanted to innovate the traditional swaddle into a more functional baby product, the NuRoo Swaddler is a must-have newborn essential for so many reasons! It can be confusing to learn to swaddle a baby, especially when you’re exhausted and running on little sleep. However, with a pocket for baby and velcro wings, the NuRoo Swaddler takes user error and confusion out of swaddling. Simply place baby in pocket, position arms as desired, and secure velcro across baby’s chest. When baby starts to want their arms out, you can do that too, as a way to slowly transition out of the swaddler.

The NuRoo swaddler is also the only one with three distinct sizes built into one swaddle so that every stage of baby’s growth, the swaddle fits perfectly, without any excess material – a suffocation hazard. Plus, using the same innovative fabric as the Pocket Shirt, the Swaddler has the ability to pull sweat and moisture off baby’s skin, passing it through the material and releasing into the air to keep baby comfortable and dry, which means they will hopefully sleep better. The breathable, moisture wicking properties help regulate baby’s body temperature. Another reason the signature fabric makes a huge difference is that it offers compression; the compression fabric recreates the familiar comforting snug feeling of being in utero and therefore, eases baby’s transition from the womb. The compression fabric also decreases irritability and promotes self-soothing and enhances quality of sleep to improve rest and sleep cycle regulation.

The NuRoo Swaddler comes in three styles, and is approved for use with preterm and full-term babies! You can use the NuRoo Swaddle the day your baby is born, so be sure to wash and pack it in your hospital bag. It supports the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative, is used by leading institutions and approved for use in the NICU with pre-term infants.

You can learn more about the NuRoo Pocket Shirt kangaroo care and Swaddler on NuRoo’s website, Facebook, and Instagram.

Celebrating Earth Month with Colgate Mattress

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

With Earth Day in April, it seemed like the perfect time to chat once again about a much loved standard crib mattress brand here on Gugu Guru, Colgate Mattresses. There are so many reasons we love and highly recommend Colgate Mattresses for parents; as you know, the decision to pick out a standard crib mattress can be overwhelming for some parents, as not only is the mattress where baby will spend the majority of their time, but the crib has to be a safe and soothing place for baby to rest, play, grow, and learn. Made in America, Colgate Mattress is a third-generation family-owned and operated company comprised of committed craftsmen who have been dedicated to manufacturing quality crib mattresses for over 60 years.

We’ve written extensively about why Colgate is a fantastic choice for your nursery in our Back to Sleep campaign, Innovative Sleep Products roundup, and as a Nursery Essential for Mother’s Day, plus we got to Meet the Makers Behind the Mattresses, but today we’re focusing on a very exciting new collection within the Colgate company, the zenBaby line of mattresses.

The zenBaby Collection from Colgate is their most innovative mattress line yet, as it is designed with KulKote®, a groundbreaking water-based temperature-regulating technology that helps create a tranquil and secure, zen-like environment for baby to relax and sleep.

The exclusive collection includes a Hybrid 2-in-1 with pocketed microcoils, a 2-Stage eco-classica™ foam mattress, and a Portable Crib Mattress – all made with KulKote® to ensure the most comfortable and “zen like” sleeping climate for baby; the zenBaby line of mattresses is the first and only crib mattress to feature this innovative sleep technology. Since we’re focusing on Earth month and being eco-friendly within the nursery, we wanted to point out that  that all three mattresses use premium eco-classica™ foam, are entirely made in the USA and are CertiPure and Greenguard gold certified – incredibly safe for baby, bringing you, as a new parent, peace of mind.

When you’re buying a Colgate mattress, you are investing in your child’s future of restful sleep, as the zenBaby™ Hybrid 2-in-1 is a versatile, dual-firmness, infant-to-toddler transition crib mattress. The infant side features an extra-firm eco foam made with plant oils and coated with KulKote® for optimal temperature regulation and comfort. The toddler side features durable and supportive microcoils for added pressure relief, breathability and posture support.

We know many parents will love that the zenBaby Hybrid also features an ultra soft cotton blend cover with waterproof backing, and chemical-free rayon cloth flammability barrier; you can rest easy knowing your baby is sleeping on the safest mattress possible, and breathing in fresh air, free of any chemicals. Plus, all Colgate products are hypoallergenic, odorless and GREENGUARD® Gold & CertiPUR-US® certified safe for no harmful emissions. Colgate has always chosen to use non-toxic barrier fabrics instead of harsh fire retardant chemicals to give parents peace of mind while not only meeting, but exceeding federal flammability standards. Colgate takes your baby’s safety incredibly seriously and they are the first mattress company to use natural coir fiber made from coconuts shell husks.

Colgate is legendary for their commitment to exacting manufacturing standards of crafting safe crib and toddler mattresses. Colgate uses only the highest quality components, hand assembled right here in the USA because, as they say, “while many crib mattresses may look similar on the outside, we know it’s what’s on the inside that counts.” When it comes to your baby’s safety, especially regarding sleep, there are no compromises to be made, which is why Colgate is your one-stop-shop for your baby’s mattress needs, they’ve been providing parents peace of mind since they began in Atlanta in 1955, and have paved the way for setting the standard when it comes to your baby’s crib mattress.

Gugu Guru is so appreciative of our sponsors; thank you to Colgate Mattress for making this sponsored post possible.

Best Bassinets for Babies: Gugu Picks

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Bassinets for babies are more popular than ever these days due to one of the 2016 safe sleep recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) being that infants sleep in the same room as the parents for at least the first six months and, optimally, for the first year of life, based on the latest evidence. So, unless you don’t have a nursery at all, you’ll likely need a sleeping arrangement for your bedroom as well. Here, we’ve rounded up the best bassinets for babies in 2018 according to Gugu Guru’s experts:

Gugu Pick for Best all Around: SNOO Smart Sleeper
While this bassinet may seem very expensive compared to other bassinets for babies on the market, when you break it down it is actually only around $5 a day for additional sleep for you and baby! Evoz Monitor Review

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

On the market for a new baby monitor? Check out this Evoz Monitor Review from our friend and Gugu Concierge expert, Amber Michel, founder of Your Milk Shoppe.

When opening the package what I noticed first was how compact the device is, which means the installation is super quick and easy. Can we say parent WIN??!! Because of its simplicity and easy install, traveling with this Evoz monitor is super easy, as all you’re packing is the one device that syncs up directly to your phone app that acts as your personal monitor.

Evoz Monitor Review

Because this device is married with your phone, you have a bit more freedom to walk around with phone in hand acting as your very own monitor. Again, this is a major win for any parent who does not want to sit in one place, monitor in hand, with the fear of losing reception and the screenshot of their baby. You can truly go anywhere in your home, back yard included.

Evoz Monitor Review

Evoz provides you with a lot of helpful parenting tools for your baby’s sleep patterns; it helps you get a better idea of how long it takes your baby to fall asleep. It also helps you determine how to respond when your baby wakes up at night through an option called “cry alert” and that can be sent to you via SMS, Email or Push alerts. You are truly plugged in, even when you’re not staring at the monitor, and that is liberating.

Evoz Monitor Review

What I enjoyed most when using the Evoz monitor with my little one was that I wasn’t the only parent dialed into the app on my phone. My husband could also access it on his phone. (And, keep in mind, when we are using this app, we can talk to our little ones through our phones, soothing them back to sleep). And get this, when I wanted to take a bath, I was able to relax and take a bath while my husband could keep an eye on the baby while she slept (or didn’t ?). There is total freedom in sharing the parenting responsibility at bed time!

Evoz Monitor Review bottom line: Evoz Vision WiFi Video Baby Monitor is a great pick for modern, connected, working parents.

Creating a Safe and Sleep-Friendly Nursery with The Sleep Lady

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Kim West, LCSW-C, also known as The Sleep Lady, is our go-to guru when it comes to anything safety and sleep related. She’s here today to share her super helpful tips for creating a safe and sleep-friendly nursery.

When I was expecting my first child I began to dream of making our extra bedroom into a nursery for our firstborn. I thought about the color of the walls, the fabrics I preferred, and where to position the furniture. My initial thoughts were not about creating a safe and sleep-friendly nursery, to be honest with you! That came later. But really, it is far more important than where the dresser goes!

There are a few key ways you can make your baby’s nursery safe AND sleep-enhancing. Safety always comes first, so let’s start there.

Safety Tips:

  • Choose a firm mattress, topped with a snugly-fitted, smooth sheet. Avoid bumpers as they can be a safety hazard.
  • Maintain an uncluttered sleep surface: no pillows, loose blankets or toys in the sleep space.
  • Insist on a non-smoking environment for your child’s sleep space.
  • Check that there are no cords, hanging picture frames or art, house plants, or other items within 3 feet of your child’s crib or sleep space.

Making a Sleep-Friendly Environment:

  • Keep it Dark. Consider adding blackout curtains or blinds to your child’s windows. A newborn’s internal clock is not developed yet so we have to be their external clock by making their room dark when it’s time to sleep. Along with following a soothing bedtime routine, a dark room will help your newborn’s body to secrete melatonin, the drowsy making hormone, and get ready for sleep.
  • Use a White-Noise Machine. White noise is very soothing and helpful for babies because it is similar to the noise they hear for months inside the womb. It also drowns out outside noises such as toddlers playing or activity outside the home. When shopping for a device consider one with multiple sound options and that works continuously throughout the night.
  • Set a Comfortable Temperature. Often we overlook the nursery’s temperature but this is an important factor for your child’s sleep. In general, we all sleep better in cool temps and, because babies are unable to regulate their body temperature entirely, they are dependent on us to set the environment for them. This includes their clothing as well. The thermostat should be between 68-72 degrees. If needed, utilize a fan or AC unit in the summer as well as keeping the curtains closed during the day to block the hot sun from warming up the room. Instead of a blanket, use a wearable blanket or sleep bag to keep your baby warm and safe.

Soothing Surroundings for Easier Sleep:

Go ahead and enjoy making your nursery as lovely as possible. But, remember the main point of the nursery is for your baby’s sleep!

  • Use Soft Colors. Choose soft, neutral, or pale colors for the decor.
  • Dim the Lights. A night-light may come in handy for a late-night check-in and installing a dimmer on a lamp may help while nursing or for changing a diaper as unobtrusively as possible.
  • Remove Toys. While mobiles are beautiful to look at over a crib, they can be overly stimulating, particularly when done in bright colors. Consider using one over a pack-n-play or bassinet when your child is awake. Also, keeping the room tidy and uncluttered will help keep distractions down once your baby becomes alert of his surroundings. With this in mind, keep exciting and favorite toys out of his line of sight while in his sleep space.

Setting up a safe and sleep-friendly nursery is not too hard to do and it goes a long way toward helping your child get the sleep he needs.

You can find Kim West on her website, Instagram, and Facebook.

Colgate Mattress: Must Have Baby Registry Pick

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

-Sponsored Post-

There is nothing more valuable to a parent than peace of mind, so when it comes to adding products to your registry, the top product pick to consider should always be the crib mattress. Why the crib mattress? Well, simply put, not only is that where baby will spend the majority of their time, but the crib has to be a safe and soothing place for baby to rest, play, grow, and learn. When it comes to crib mattresses, our must have baby registry pick is Colgate Mattress. We believe your baby’s nursery needs to include a quality product from Colgate, a third generation, family-owned and operated company of craftsmen has been selling crib mattresses for over 60 years. Colgate is not only known for their top selling mattresses, but their accessories as well.

We’ve featured Colgate for Back to Sleep, Innovative Sleep Products, and as a Nursery Essential for Mother’s Day, plus Meet the Makers Behind the Mattresses

There are many reasons that Colgate Mattresses are a must have baby registry pick for your little one. Did you know that Colgate Mattresses are made in America? It’s true! And, better yet, they’re a family owned business, so you can feel good about supporting a family when you purchase from them. Colgate also keeps parents in mind and wants to make your life a little easier – so they designed their mattresses with the utmost attention to form and function. Did you know Colgate are pioneers in crib-mattress making?  Colgate was the first to create light weight mattresses, which makes lifting the mattress to change the sheets a much easier task than traditional mattresses. Colgate mattresses are cleverly designed to accommodate baby as she transitions to the toddler phase with a simple flip of the mattress. One side is firm and supportive for infants while the other is slightly softer for toddler comfort; safe sleep at all ages.

For the eco-conscious parent, Colgate has always chosen to use non-toxic barrier fabrics instead of harsh fire retardant chemicals to give parents peace of mind while not only meeting, but exceeding federal flammability standards. Colgate takes your baby’s safety incredibly seriously and they are the first mattress company to use natural coir fiber made from coconuts shell husks. And, you can rest easy knowing that all of Colgate’s crib mattresses carry the Greenguard GOLD certification.

Colgate’s safety and concern for baby doesn’t end at crib mattresses, either. They have a full line of accessories to help keep your baby calm and safe, including bassinet mattresses, organic crib mattress covers, and contoured changing pads complete with natural changing pad covers, too. Colgate products are designed with rich and natural textures to provide your baby with a calming and cozy environment. With Colgate Mattresses, quality and function strike a harmonious balance to help baby sleep safely and peacefully, all while providing parents with peace of mind.

The Village Reviews: Gunapod Bamboo Duvet Sack

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Our Gugu Village reviews this new Gunapod Bamboo Duvet Sack from the Gunamuna company.

The Gunapod Bamboo Duvet Sack is constructed of super soft fabric made from eco-friendly hypoallergenic thermal regulating bamboo fibers, perfect for protecting sensitive skin. It is filled with premium fill to feel like a down comforter. The Gunapod mimics a caregiver’s hug with all over channel-stitched soft pressure points, so baby feels ultra comfortable + sleeps longer. All of that with the brand’s WONDERZiP® technology for the easiest diaper changes and a temperature control zip to further customize the cozy.

Here’s what our village had to say:

Gunapod Bamboo Duvet Sack

-Shelby S.-
I got the Gunapod Bamboo Duvet Sack before my infant was born because he is a winter baby and I wanted to try some different wearable blankets to keep him warm. I was nervous when it arrived because it was so large. I thought he wouldn’t be able to use it until he was much older but I was wrong! It fits just fine for my 9lb, 20in little guy and is the softest and warmest thing he owns!! As an infant I swaddle him at night and then put the gunapod over his swaddle. During the day I let his arms out when he is swinging or just lying around. When he gets older I’ll let his arms out the slots. I’m very pleased with this sleep sack and it is the only one I am currently using.

My initial thoughts on the Gunapod Bamboo Duvet Sack are: I love the soft material, the adorable pattern and that the velcro is the non-sticky type, so hair and clothes don’t immediately stick to it. Little Mallary seems to love the comfort of the fabric and hold of the internal swaddle and sack too. We’re not sure if she sleeps longer in it, yet – but we’re hoping to test this more on our upcoming weekend trips.

I love the options to have one, two or no arms out. The baby prefers both arms out, so far! I like the idea that it’s easy to change the diaper but I’m also paranoid that it will get dirty unless I use a cloth diaper or burp cloth under her while changing her. I also like that the company is conscious of hip dysplasia prevention and that her legs are not restricted.

Overall, we love this Gunapod Bamboo Duvet Sack and it helps with naps in the Pack n Play! We are looking forward to using this swaddle sack more when we travel, especially when we go to Walla Walla next month as our first overnight away from home!

Real Mom Reviews Moba Bassinet

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Gugu Guru registrant and new mama Kenzi reviews Moba bassinet.

When we were making sure we had all the essentials for baby boy, I was really stressing over getting the right bassinet for him. I think it’s very important to have baby sleep in the room with mom and dad for the first 6 months, and I wanted him right by my side, but we aren’t cosleepers. I searched but everything I found in stores had so much padding on the sides and lots of frill, which is just not safe. The handwoven baskets are beautiful (and great for Instagram photos), but are they truly safe for overnight sleeping?? I reached out to the baby product experts at Gugu Guru (who I registered with this time around) and they told me about the Moba bassinet. I read up on it and it sounded like everything I was looking for, so I wanted to give it a try.

We’ve used it since the day we brought our baby boy home (above), and now I’m not sure what I would do without it. The Moba Bassinet checks every box and even some I didn’t consider:

Safety

Obviously, #1 on the list was safety. I’m that mom who wakes up multiple times in the night, even if baby doesn’t wake, to just feel my babies. This basket is created with hundreds of breathable holes for maximum airflow, which helps mama sleep a little easier at night. The liner has no frills or padding. The mattress is nice and firm for baby. Apparently it’s super comfortable because he prefers his bassinet over his crib.

Portability

I was drawn to the idea of a Moses basket for its light weight and portability. Not only can I easily transport it through the house, it travels everywhere with us! I like to it call it my Mobile Moba… not really, but it sounds catchy. We’ve even taken it to the beach with us. The basket is super lightweight and sturdy. It’s molded into one piece so there’s no need to worry about it unraveling anywhere or the handles coming off.

Longevity

Many moses baskets seem to have a pretty low weight limit of 15 pounds, but the Moba goes up to 20 pounds. Call it a hunch, but I had a strong feeling my boy would be on the higher end of the birth weight spectrum (coming in at 10.4 lbs) and would surely hit 15 pounds before 6 months. We’re still a few months away from that, but at 2 months, he was already over 14 pounds, so I’m glad he still has plenty of time to stay right next to mommy.

The Stand

The stand that goes with the basket is made to hug the bassinet securely. Most bassinet stands rock front to back, which I’ve never understood because I feel like I’m rocking the baby back on their head. The Moba stand rocks smoothly side to side. When he starts tossing and turning, his weight allows it to gently rock on its own, which soothes him back to sleep. However, if you don’t want it to rock, it becomes stationary with one simple swivel of a small wooden piece at the base.

Care

Did I mention we’ve brought it to the beach? We can do that because all the parts are so easy to clean! I love a clean crisp white all day long, but I’m always so afraid it’s going to get dingy, so I hardly ever allow myself to get white in anything… Like why in the world did I think we could have a white living room rug?! But with the material this is made of I felt comfortable going with white and after almost 3 months of use it’s still just as beautiful as it was the day we got it.

Style

All of the safety features I could ask for and didn’t have to sacrifice style. The Moba is a very sleek, contemporary design with 8 unique color options for the basket and just as many for the sheets, which also come in an organic option.

Needless to say, I’m a fan – I actually tried to think of a con and couldn’t come up with one. If you’re looking for a bassinet and aren’t worried about all the frills, but a simple, safe design, this one’s for you.
