Gugu Guide Gear Picks: Chelsea Crowl

by Christine Swearingen Leave a Comment

Meet our Gugu Guides! These expert moms in our community are here to provide wisdom, solutions and experience to help you make the best decisions about products and services for your growing family.

About Chelsea

Have you ever been to North Dakota? It consists of a lot of rolling hills and sage brush. Not many trees, lots of wind and cold winters. Summer lasts maybe 4 months but honestly it’s snowed in June before. Winter days are usually in the negatives which makes us seek alternatives to keep our two very active boys busy. In the summer we spend most of our days outside; going on bike rides, walks in the rolling hills, fishing, camping or just having a bbq with our friends. During winters we fortunately enough have an indoor trampoline park close by that we do utilize. We build projects indoors and our 4 year old loves to do science experiments. Baking keeps us motivated during the extra cold days along with having our friends join us.

Find out how she does it all, and check out her top 3 gear picks for babies and toddlers. Follow her on @chelsea_crowl2oo9 to learn more!

How do you balance your work and mom life?

Although I’m currently a stay at home mom I still try to earn a small income which is easier said than done with young children. Have you ever tried to bring out a laptop around young children? Key banging heaven! I am able to utilize my phone doing small income projects during the day while still caring for my boys. After 9 when they’re in bed I have a few hours to use my computer to work on anything I have going on.

Caring for your home and children are a full time job in itself. You can’t do everything every single day. Some days I don’t get time to do any income projects and just focus on my children and doing special things with them.

Planning out meals helps with not going to the grocery store multiple times a week and saves money if you can utilize the same ingredients in a few recipes.

Describe your baby and toddler gear style.

Funky, eco-friendly, light, multi-purpose, and quality affordable gear.

What’s been your biggest obstacle as a parent and what did you do to overcome it?

My oldest son just turned 4 so I’m sure I have a lot more hurdles to overcome. One of the hardest things I had to do with my first and am ready to start with my second is weaning from breastfeeding. I tried several different approaches with my first son and felt defeated and heartbroken at the same time. I hated seeing him so sad when I could easily help him but also needed to end our journey of breastfeeding as I was pregnant with out second son. We weaned our daytime feeds away first which i found keeping him active helped keep his mind busy and taking his nap just happened instead of me having to put him to sleep.

After having a few successful weeks we worked on night feedings, he was still waking up twice a night to feed. I tried just about everything I could think of. In the end I just resisted long enough he fell asleep while I held him. We only had 3 nights before he just stopped trying and in the end, he slept all night! I think I made it worse by dragging out trying different methods thinking it would make it easier.

Feminine and Whimsical Nursery Reveal

by Christine Swearingen Leave a Comment

Today we are featuring a guest post from our favorite nursery e-design service, YouthfulNest!

YouthfulNest is a service that matches you with an expert nursery room designer for an entire custom room design. Their e-design service helps expecting parents find more ease and joy in nesting. Let a YouthfulNest Design BFF de-stress the process of designing a nursery. Taking the guesswork out of choosing the right products for your specific style and budget. All at an affordable price.

You can check out their services on our shop and sign up for your own specialized nursery design package.

Oh girl, here we go! This fresh, feminine nursery designed for a mom of three boys is so ready for her spotlight. It started with a blank canvas and bloomed into a whimsical space full of flirty fauna in pinks and greens.

We started following Megan Sullivan on Instagram a couple years ago. She was already following YouthfulNest and we appreciated her likes and comments on our work. When we learned she was pregnant with her fourth child, her first baby girl, we reached out to her and recommend our eDesign service.

THE GIFT OF TIME

Megan has her hands full with three young boys, is a real estate expert undergoing a huge home remodel, and is also the co-founder of The Local Moms Network. An organized community that strives to give moms the gifts of time in cities across the country, currently in 30 states. Let’s just say she had her hands full. It was our goal to give Megan the gift of time by helping her plan and design her nursery.

It was also all happening during the heart of a global pandemic due to the invasion of covid-19. Megan had worked with a traditional interior design in the past but this time needed a contactless option for the health and safety of her and her family. Our completely virtual series allowed just for that.

YouthfulNest design service Biggie on Gugu Guru
Final floor plan and direction for installation

A FEW OF OUR FAVORITE THINGS

Megan was already thinking to purchase our services and landed on the Biggie eDesign package exclusively sold on the Gugu guru website. From there we paired her up with YouthfulNest Design BFF Jolene Fontaine.

Megan already had her eye on a particular wallpaper and the rest of the room sprouted up from its style and color. The Frida print in pink by Pepper Home captured Megan’s heart. And even though there were a couple moments spent considering another style this flirty print stayed on top.

THE THREE NURSERY ESSENTIALS

With the color and style direction set, the designer started pulling in the three essentials; glider, dresser and crib. A few of our favorite brands wanted to contribute to our design and gifted premium pieces to the nursery.

First, we have the Stokke Sleepi crib taking center stage in front of the wallpapered wall. With a Tiktak Design custom crib mobile dangling over this cozy sleep space.

Then we move over to mom’s haven for all things baby, the glider. The Compass Rocker was selected from Project Nursery. The curved body in a creamy plush upholstery is luxurious and supportive. We loved the touch of pink from the rose gold metal legs.

The other top spot any parent looks to be functional and stylish is the changing area. The Schooner dresser was found on Paynes Gray. This piece is a beautiful blend of retro and modern styling, featuring brass metal accents.

ABOVE AND BEYOND

With the three essential nursery spots nailed down, there was one more spot that was important for the family to incorporate in the room. With all the little brothers wanting to get in on welcoming their baby sister to the family we needed a spot for them and other guests to sit. This meant the need for additional seating. Originally we selected the Natural Daybed Boho from CB2. Then it was delivered damaged and a replacement was unavailable for weeks. We quickly sourced a few other styles and it was The Mid-Century Daybed from West Elm was ready to ship and fit the bill for both form and function. A clean line daybed lined with plush pillows from Paynes Gray and One Affirmation.

With all the main functionality covered let’s move on to some fun details! We can almost hear those adorable baby giggles as baby Scout is pushed by those big brothers in her macrame swing from Emma and Finn. When baby Scout is tired of play, it’s time for snuggling up with her new BFF, a plush Narwhal creature, and listening to his story, both from Slumberkins.

BEFORE & AFTER

ROUND OF APPLAUSE

We can’t take all the credit for this fabulous nursery room reveal. The fact is Megan and her install crew are ultimately responsible for taking their designers’ product and styling recommendations and installing it all themselves. As you can see they did an impeccable job.

Our best wishes to this lovely family and welcome to the world Scout Sullivan!
–XOYN

Must-Have Baby Safety Products

by Christine Swearingen Leave a Comment

It’s Baby Safety Month and we know how important safety is for all families with little ones. As new and expectant parents, the worry to pick the safest products for your new babe can be overwhelming. We’re here to make it a little easier with our must-have baby safety products.

Safe Nursery

Our favorite monitor for safe sleep is the Nanit Pro Complete Monitoring System. The full set with the smart crib sheet and breathing wear with the safe sleep angle feature will put any parents’ sleep worries at ease. We love that there’s a wall-mount and floor stand option too so it fits in any nursery or sleep setting.

An air purifier is a must for any home, but especially the nursery. The Crane Air Purifier includes a pre-filter, true HEPA filter, and UV lamp to remove bacteria and germs from the air. Keep your baby’s nursery clean and clear and be comfortable knowing the air quality is purified.

A Hygro Plus Humidifier from Babymoov allows you to select an ideal humidity level, between 30% and 90%, and will turn off when the desired level is reached. Fancy! It also displays the room temperature and you can also add essential oils to the built-in essential oil diffuser.

Another must-have for any nursery, or the entire home really, is an outlet protector. The Child Be Safe Electrical Outlet Protector is easy to install and fits rectangular wall outlets and rectangle switches to keep little ones from gaining access to wall outlets or dangerous electrical switches. This one item alone is essential for baby safety in the home.

Safe Feeding

Sterilizing is a must to ensure that your baby’s bottles and feeding accessories are safe, clean, and germ-free. Our top choice is the nanobebe microwave sterilizer! With a closed lid, its contents remain sterile for 24 hours, so you can sterilize before bed and wake up to sterilized bottles ready for use.

This may be “just” a magnet, but this MAMMaway magnet with breastmilk storage guidelines is top notch! Don’t try to remember how long milk is good for, stick it on your freezer so you’ll never forget and don’t have to worry if your milk is safe for baby.

Baby Safety On the Go

The Clek Liing is a great infant car seat all around and sets the bar high for infant car seat safety. Simple, secure installation ensures that baby is always at the perfect angle for safe, open airways. Its lightweight design and convenient one-handed quick-release make it easy to remove from the base or from one of the many compatible strollers. Also check out the Clek Foonf as a great convertible car seat option.

One of our top recommended on-the-go safety must-haves is hand sanitizer of course! Kibou Sanitizer slips right inside your Kibou bag, pocket, or other diaper bag, without taking up an extra inch of precious space or adding more than an ounce of extra weight. This ultra-slim sanitizer spray is the perfect companion wherever your day takes you.

Real Moms Tell Why The Boon GRUB is a Gamechanger

by Christine Swearingen Leave a Comment

The Boon GRUB is sleek in style with all the features you really want in a high chair. From a removable tray, seat pad, and seat that are all dishwasher friendly. Adjustable legs, tray, and footrest to give your child a custom fit and ensures you can use it from the countertop to the table. When your little one outgrows the baby high chair, the GRUB transforms into the perfect toddler chair. For only $149 with all these features, this high chair is a home run. Read on for some real mom reviews and see what they loved about this high chair.

Monique A. – Baby: 15 months

This High Chair was easy to put together, it took under a half hour. The directions were not the greatest, but we made it work. Once together there were some features we truly enjoyed. We loved how washable it all is, we loved the different levels of the chair, the footstool, and the straps to keep him in. Those straps were so easy and secure especially when needing to keep him safe once we removed the tray. It took a few trials to figure out how to easily remove the tray, but now I think we have it. At first, it was frustrating once we removed the tray because we had nowhere to put it, but then we figured out that it fits so easily underneath the seat. The only issue we have is we wish the tray could lock into place in the last slot. We cannot comfortably get our guy in and out of the seat without taking off the tray.

All in all we really love this high chair for all the reasons we stated above.  We would highly recommend this chair as it is safe, sleek, easy to clean and grows with your child.

Christine Benton – Baby: 10 months

As a first time mom, I am always looking for products that are easy to use and more importantly easy to clean. The Boon high chair definitely hits both of those marks. We already use other Boon baby products, so it definitely makes sense to expand into this area now that our son is feeding himself. My favorite feature of the high chair is the fact that it can go into the dishwasher. Although I will likely hand wash often, the fact that it can be deep cleaned in the dishwasher when needed is clutch. There seem to also be very little crevices that food can get stuck in which is very important for me.

Overall, the all white chair is very sleek, which works well with our kitchen. It was fairly easy to assemble and adjust as needed. I do wish the high chair was a little easier to collapse or you could remove the legs to easily transport. As my son continues to grow I like that this chair has the option to also convert into a toddler seat. It seems like a product we will be able to use for several years which is definitely something I consider before purchasing baby or toddler products.

Thank you to Boon Inc. for making this sponsored post possible!

About Megan

Find out how she does it all, and check out her top 3 gear picks for babies and toddlers. Follow her on @girlgonechild_ to learn more!

How do you balance your work and mom life?

I don’t really! I go to bed most nights feeling guilty about being behind on a deadline or not spending enough time with my kids. I’m really lucky to have a husband who is very 50/50 in parenting. He does all the cooking in the house and I handle all the laundry. We divide and conquer based on our skill sets and it works.

Describe your baby and toddler gear style.

Funky, eco-friendly, never-beige, on-the-go.

What’s been your biggest obstacle as a parent and what did you do to overcome it?

Being away from my mom when I was becoming a mom was really hard. Luckily she visited a lot and now lives only 30 minutes away.

The Scoop: Aden + Anais Weighted Blanket

by Christine Swearingen Leave a Comment

Did you know that they make weighted blankets for babies and toddlers? They do! And when it comes to helping your little one get the best possible sleep, many parents find themselves willing to try different methods or employ new techniques. Enter Aden + Anais with their stylish weighted blanket options.

If you’re unfamiliar with the concept of weighted blankets, they are proven in clinical studies to both help alleviate stress and help promote longer, deeper sleep. They can promote happiness and reduce stress by releasing those happy-making hormones while simultaneously reducing the ones that cause stress. It makes sense that while a weighted blanket will help an adult sleep, it can do the same for the littlest among us. Just note that sleep experts do not recommend weighted blankets for babies under 20 lbs.

Aden + Anais created the embrace collection to help babies get their best possible sleep. They combine unique weight placement with 100% natural cotton, allowing you to use the weighted blanket all year long. Additionally, they make three different weights and sizes to accommodate babies of different ages and stages. Let’s take a look at what they have to offer.

On-the-Go Blanket

$59.95
Weight: 2 pounds
Recommended Baby Weight: 20+ pounds

This is the smallest of the weighted blankets from Aden + Anais, fitting easily into strollers to keep baby both calm and warm on your morning or evening walks. This blanket is for babies who weigh 20 pounds or more, meeting the weighted blanket guidelines of no more than 10% of the baby’s body weight. It comes in two neutral, modern prints that will look great tucked into your favorite stroller. A safety note: Babies should never sleep with a blanket. Keep this handy for your stroller rides and other outings.

Toddler Bed Weighted Blanket

$99.95
Weight: 2.65 pounds
Recommended Toddler Weight: 26.5 pounds

The next size up fits your toddler’s bed just perfectly. This weighted blanket will help your growing little one adjust to their new bed, soothing their anxieties and helping them drift off to dream with ease. Using this blanket as part of your sleep routine could make bedtime easier for your whole family. It’s made for toddlers who weigh 26.5 pounds or more. This blanket comes in three prints with colors that feel perfect for a growing toddler who wants to have a say.

Lounge Blanket

$119.95
Weight: 4.4 pounds
Recommended Toddler Weight: 44 pounds

Sure to become a favorite for the whole family, the lounge blanket is the largest option from Aden + Anais and feels perfect for snuggling together. You can throw it on your own bed for a joint naptime or cuddle under it for family naptime. It weighs in at 4.4 pounds, which means you could also use it as a solo option for kiddos who weigh 44 pounds or more. This weighted blanket comes in one classy, neutral print to complement your decor.

If you’re looking for an easy way to help your baby with sleep, starting with an Aden + Anais embrace collection weighted blanket seems like the perfect choice. You’ll be offering them a gentle hug when you can’t be there to hold them, calming their anxieties with ease.

How do you balance your work and mom life?

I don’t—something always has to give but I have to accept that whether it be spending time with kids at the expense of a messy house. I also really focus on my family on weekends so it helps with the mom guilt when I’m working all week.

Describe your baby and toddler gear style in 5 words.

Minimal, stylish, functional, modern, yet classic. I guess you can say I like to splurge on well-designed baby gear that gets a lot of use out of it!

What’s been your biggest obstacle as a parent and what did you do to overcome it?

Asking for help, especially during the pandemic and I was able to ask more from my husband, in-laws and also rely on amazing products to both nurture and educate my children while home with them so much this past year.

Top 3 Gear Picks

Beaba Babycook

I love that I’ve been using it since my first kid started on purées and I was able to keep using it as he grew into a toddler. I make everything in it now from pesto to hummus and even chopping up food so the baby can eat what we eat.

SNOO

My husband said it best… it’s kind of like having another parent on hand. It’s so smart and soothes the baby for you and has really trained our baby to sleep better. I wish it were around with my first because he wasn’t as good of a sleeper. You can rent it or if you purchase it, it has great resale value.

Cybex Highchair

Cybex is always so beautifully and smartly designed so it’s our go-to for baby gear. I love how this chair looks in our home—it goes with the decor and we always get compliments on it. It can be used from birth to adult so you really get your money’s worth with it.
