UPPAbaby VISTA Stroller for New Mamas

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Why did we recommend the UPPAbaby VISTA stroller to Angelique Cabral? When she started working with the Gugu Guru team on her registry, she made it clear that she needed a stroller that would be great for travel, long walks around the neighborhood, and most importantly, really functional!

We knew the ultimate stroller for her would be the UPPAbaby VISTA! We have sung the praises of the UPPAbaby VISTA before – it’s a featured baby gear item in our Cause Driven Registry. It’s also one of our favorite strollers for families who plan to have more than one child. When See Kate Sew got the chance to test it out, she said, “We love this stroller and it is pretty special that my 3-year-old gets the front seat. She loves peeking on her little sister and I think it makes her feel good that this stroller is really for both of them! I take this UPPAbaby VISTA stroller everywhere, including the grocery store and walks. It’s super easy to set up, everything clicks into place! And the basket underneath is big enough for a whole load of groceries (I never get carts anymore!) It’s such a great single stroller and an amazing double! I recommend it to everyone!“

UPPAbaby VISTA Stroller

The UPPAbaby VISTA also comes with a bassinet attachment, which is ideal for newborns. Angelique has been using it as a make-shift sleeping quarter for baby Adelaide when she’s on set on CBS’ Life In Pieces. Parents also tell us that they love the large basket under the UPPAbaby VISTA stroller – it’s perfect for stocking up on things like diapers, wipes… and wine (we kid! Kind of.)

And, for all of you eco-conscious parents, we named the UPPAbaby VISTA one of our best choice for eco-conscious moms. Heading for a walk in the afternoon sun? No worry! The UPPAbaby VISTA features a UPF 50 drop down sunshade to keep UV rays off baby’s precious skin. And, no need to worry about a flat tire ever with the VISTA, as the wheels are made of foam and rubber – with just the right amount of jiggle to lull baby to sleep, and smooth enough to help baby stay fast asleep.

Babywearing Week With BabyBjorn: Denim Baby Carrier One

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

-Sponsored Post-

Did you know that October 2nd – 8th is International Babywearing Week? This week we teamed up with BabyBjorn to highlight some of their most popular baby carriers and see how real moms from around the country use their BabyBjorn carriers. Today’s real mama is Jessica Quirk, of the well-known style blog, What I Wore (she’s also an author!). Jessica is here to chat about pairing babywearing with mama style using her Denim BabyBjorn Baby Carrier One. Read on to see why Jessica loves this carrier!

BabyBjorn’s Baby Carrier One is the ergonomic babywearing choice that makes it easy for you to give your child the closeness and security they need, while you keep your hands free. Easy to use and adaptable to the needs of your growing child, it’s BabyBjorn’s most popular baby carrier. Your child sits comfortably and can move their legs freely, thanks to the adjustable seat area. With the Denim Baby Carrier One, it’s easy for you to switch between several front and back babywearing positions. The baby carrier has a sturdy waist belt and padded, form-fitting shoulder straps that relieve pressure on your back and shoulders and make it comfortable for you to carry your child from birth and up to the age of three.

Here’s what Jessica had to say about the Denim BabyBjorn Carrier One:

We’re big fans of baby wearing in our family and we’ve done so with both our kids since they were born!  Now that Bea is getting a little heavier, I’ve upgraded to a baby carrier that has enough support for both of us! I’ve been test driving the Denim BabyBjorn Carrier One for a month and a half and I’ve been loving it! I’ve worn born soft cloth baby wraps and carriers with buckles and supports and this particular style has been most comfortable with a larger sized baby (Bea is between 15-20 pounds these days!!). In particular, I really like the adjustable upper back support (it can slide up or down to just the right spot) and the easy to hook and unhook closures, which make getting Bea in and out a literal snap.

I also really like this color way – it’s a blue denim look that goes with just about everything in my closet. When I know I’ll be baby wearing, I like to keep my tops lightweight and with interest on the sleeves versus the front or back. A lightweight striped sweater like I’m wearing in this post is perfect for a cool fall day. As for baby, sometimes I like to go matchy matchy or just complimentary colors.

Thank you to BabyBjorn for making this sponsored post possible.

Back to Sleep: 4moms breeze GO Playard

by Gugu Guru 8 Comments

Back to Sleep week is focused on safe and healthy sleep for baby. Today’s post features the 4Moms breeze GO Playard, which is a must-have for traveling mamas, minimalist parents, tech-loving moms and dads, and small space living, too. Plus, head to the bottom of the post to enter for a chance to win one!

Introducing the 4moms breeze GO! Anyone who knows Gugu Guru knows that one of our all time favorite brands is 4moms.  4moms is best known for their innovation, technology and modern, sleek style. In the past couple years, we have showcased 4moms breeze playard as a best-in-class product in our Back to Sleep safe sleep event.  This year, the company has released the 4moms breeze GO – a slightly lighter and one less frill (no bassinet) version of the breeze.  If you’re on the market for a playard, whether for a room in your home, for grandma’s house, for frequent traveling families – or all of the above, here’s why we think you may want to check out the 4moms breeze GO.4moms breeze GO Playard

Playards are typically laborious things to put together. You have to pop the sides a certain way and then push the button and it can get really, really confusing.   The 4moms breeze GO playard (and the breeze classic, for that matter) was created based on the belief that playards don’t have to be that complicated. The breeze GO is super intuitive and simple to use; it opens or closes in just one step. You heard that right – just one step.

The breeze GO is slightly more compact than the breeze classic, measuring at 43″L x 30″W x 29″H and also slightly lighter at 23 lbs.

We also love that like the breeze classic, a convenient travel bag is included.  And if you’re asking yourself why you should consider bringing your own playard when so many hotels have them on loan, here’s what our safety expert, Alison has to say:

Baby Safety Month: Strap in for Safety While On the Go with JPMA

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

It’s National Baby Safety Month and every Monday we will be sharing tips from the leaders in baby safety knowledge at JPMA. Today is all about Baby Safety on the Go – from strollers to carseats to carriers. Don’t forget to take last week’s Carseat Challenge!

From carriers to car seats to strollers and more, there are a wide variety of products all parents and caregivers need to get baby out and about.  With more options available than ever before, there is quite a bit to consider when choosing the product best suited for you and your baby.

But, strollers and carriers are not just for taking your baby from point A to point B, they are a lifestyle choice! A stroller or carrier is a part of your image and a reflection of personal style, parenting style, and lifestyle.

From travel systems and joggers to umbrellas and multiple seats, the possibilities are endless. With so many choices available today, selecting the right stroller can be a daunting task.

A stroller will be one of your most-used items so you must love everything about it. Again, think about what makes the most sense for your lifestyle. Do your research before you even visit the store. Comparison shop and talk to other parents about their recommendations. Manufacturer and retailer Web sites are also a great source of information

Don’t forget about dad! Most moms are the primary baby gear decision maker, but consider dads needs when selecting your stroller. Men focus on certain features like wheel design, steering, suspension, overall stroller height/feel, and sporty fashions, but above all, dad should also feel comfortable pushing your stroller.

Finally, keep in mind that one stroller may not serve all your needs. You may need more than one, especially as your baby grows and your needs and lifestyle changes. Whatever stroller you decide to add to your baby gear repertoire, will be the right one for you and your family and will surely provide many hours of enjoyment for you and your little one when out and about! So be sure to enjoy the ride!

When thinking about baby safety on the go, remember these guidelines for a safe outing:

  • All strollers come fitted with standard safety harness straps.
  • Use straps at all times, even if it’s a short trip.
  • Harness straps stop the child from climbing out of the seat and falling, and protects the child should the stroller tip over.
  • Safety straps should be used regardless of the child’s age.
  • Many strollers feature a five-point harness system, which features straps that secure over each shoulder, at both sides of the waist, and in the middle of the legs.
  • It is important to always use all straps, not just lap straps or shoulder straps alone.
  • If you use a soft carrier, select one made of a durable, washable fabric with sturdy, adjustable straps.
  • Read and follow all manufacturer’s instructions for use, age and weight recommendations.
  • Be sure baby’s weight is evenly distributed in the carrier and all safety straps are secured.
  • Check for ripped seams, sharp edges, and missing or loose snaps.
  • Always keep one hand on baby when tightening/loosening straps for any reason or taking baby out or putting baby in.

Baby Safety Month: Take the JPMA Carseat Challenge

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

It’s National Baby Safety Month and every Monday we will be sharing tips from the leaders in baby safety knowledge at JPMA. Today is all about carseat safety! Take the JPMA carseat challenge below – and don’t forget to check out last week’s tips, too.

Take The JPMA Carseat Challenge!

As a parent, you try to do everything right. From nutrition to sleep habits, you are constantly making well thought-out decisions that are right for your family. So when it comes to purchasing or installing car seats, why do we become helpless fools?

Whether you are purchasing your first infant carrier, upgrading your toddler into a car seat or researching booster seats, the car seat evolution is a journey through parenthood that can be intimidating. But don’t let it scare you.  Stand up to the JPMA carseat challenge and ensure a safe ride every time!

An important responsibility begins with selecting a child car seat and using it properly from the moment you bring the baby home to every car ride after that. All 50 states have laws that require the use of a car seat. All car seats manufactured today must be designed to meet stringent safety standards set by the Federal government.

Unfortunately, 3 out of 4 car seats are installed incorrectly, but when used properly and according to the manufacturers’ instructions, child restraints are highly effective at reducing the likelihood of death by more than 70%.

In fact, child restraints are considerably more effective than adult safety belts.

If you follow a few simple guidelines, riding in the car with your baby can be a safe and enjoyable experience.

The back seat is the safest place to ride.

Choose a seat that fits nicely in your car and can only move one inch in any direction once properly installed. If you purchase a seat that moves too much, please return it and purchase one that fits properly.

Always anchor the car seat/booster seat to the car using the seat belt exactly as directed by the car seat/booster seat manufacturer.

NEVER use a car seat/booster seat in a seating location with an airbag.

Read the vehicle owner’s manual for information on other belt accessories that may be required. Always read the child seat instruction manual. Each manufacturer provides specific instructions regarding proper use and installation of their child seats.

September is Baby Safety Month and this year, JPMA reminds every parent the importance of properly strapping baby into the car seat each and every time:

A snug strap should not allow any slack.

It lies in a relatively straight line without sagging.

It does not press on the child’s flesh or push the child’s body into an unnatural position.

Chest clips should be positioned mid to upper chest area, near armpits. Shoulder straps fit snugly–can only fit 1 finger between harness and shoulder or use pinch test.

Lead by example. Make sure the whole family buckles up!

From rear-facing infant seats to forward-facing car seats to booster seats, there are more options available than ever before. There is quite a bit to consider when choosing the product best suited for you, your baby and your vehicle. With a little bit of knowledge, you can ensure your child safety seat is installed and being using properly.

September is Baby Safety Month. Learn how you can keep baby safe and visit babysafetymonth.org

Top 5 Must-Have Essentials: Toddler Diaper Bag

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

One of the things that no one talks about when you become a new parent is the evolution of the diaper bag. You will start out, a worried and confused new parent, with a packed-to-the-gills diaper bag of infant gear. Over time, as you learn what you actually need for baby, your diaper bag will become less cluttered, and then slowly, as your baby grows to a toddler, all of the items you used to need (burp cloth, pacifier) will slowly disappear and make room for toddler necessities. We rounded up 5 essential toddler diaper bag must haves! What necessities for your toddler do you always carry?

Baby K’tan Smart Gear Diaper Bag: Did you know that Baby K’tan has an amazing diaper bag, too? Coming in chevron (pictured), black, or dandelion print, this diaper bag is a must-have for life with a busy toddler. What makes this bag so different and just so genius is that it includes a built-in wetbag with antibacterial lining and water-tight zipper as well as antibacterial pockets that kill germs and odor causing bacteria. That is perfect for a potty-training toddler, or any kid who loves to “do it my way!” and spills all over themselves (can you hear us sighing from there?). Plus, the K’tan diaper bag has 12 functional pockets to store all your toddler’s toys, snacks, essentials and more.

Junkless Chewy Granola Bars: Speaking of snacks, it is literally a rule of life that you cannot leave home without snacks when you’re out with a toddler. Our team is a big fan of the Junkless Granola bars when it comes to feeding the little ones. Coming in peanut butter, chocolate chip, strawberry, or cinnamon, they have no artificial flavors, colors or preservatives, no hydrogenated oils, no high fructose corn syrup, 0g trans fat; and what’s more, they have less sugar than many other leading granola bars – only 5g per 1.1 oz. bar. Our editor’s kids got the chance to try these and loved having them for breakfast, too!

MAM Baby Sports Cup: Another thing about toddlers you should know is that they are always “sooooo thirsty, mommy!” Make sure you’re all ready to go with a MAM Sports Cup full of water. The innovative MAM Sports Cup opens automatically for drinking and does not have to be opened by hand. A patented valve system ensures that the cup remains leak-proof but is always ready for drinking. This cup also features a leak-proof cap that help keep bottles clean when not in use.

B.Box For Kids Snack Pack: Yes, more snacks. We told you so! Pretty much a toddler diaper bag is 50% snacks and 50% ways to clean up after snack. With two separate compartments that seal separately, you’re able to serve different foods. Also great for crackers and dip, little sandwich shapes and berries. Fab for all ages and stages. Handy spoon stows away in the lid. BPA, Phthalates and PVC free.

Little Giraffe Plush Toy: Every toddler needs a plush buddy to take on their journeys, and we love the sweet plush animals from Little Giraffe.   Made from the same cuddly Luxe Dot fabric Little Giraffe blankets are known for, but this time with squeezable cuteness! The giant ears and curled trunk is sure to delight any toddler boy or girl. Coming in pink and blue, this little elephant, known fondly as Little E, will become the buddy you’re little buddy has always wanted.

On the Go Snacks for Busy Moments with Kids

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Our editor in chief is a huge fan of the Whole30 program as a wonderful way to reset your mind and body; a few months back we posted about doing a Whole30 with the whole family. We also had the chance to interview the mama behind the Whole 30’s Healthy Mama, Happy Baby program, Stephanie Greunke – the Healthy Mama, Happy Baby program and Instagram is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to all topics breastfeeding, pregnancy, eating clean, and even mental health. We are so excited to have teamed up with the Whole30 Mamas again – and this time all about healthy snacks for busy families!

Summer is winding down, which means you’re probably gearing up for back to school. We know how busy things can get in the frenzy of packing lunches, school pick ups, and work deadlines. Today we’ve partnered with our friends at Whole30 Healthy Mama, Happy Baby to bring you some healthy snack ideas for on the go!

Pre-made snacks:

  • Epic bites: think beef jerky, but with clean ingredients and in bite-sized form
  • RX bar kids: clean ingredients and 7 grams of protein in kid-friendly sizes and flavors
  • Serenity Kids pouches: purees that include protein, veggies, and healthy fats in easy-to-grab pouches

Easy whole foods:

  • Mini cucumbers
  • Mini peppers
  • Baby carrots (Serve any veggies with Wholly guacamole snack packs or a pre-filled tupperware of Tessemae’s ranch dressing)
  • Raw nuts (toddler-friendly, but not so baby friendly!)

Minimal prep snacks:

  • Lunch meat roll ups (clean lunch meat – we like Applegate Farms –  + cheese + condiment if you like, rolled up and held together with a toothpick)
  • Cut up fruit and add a small tupperware of natural almond butter + honey
  • Hard boiled eggs dipped in Primal Kitchen mayo

Interested in hearing even more advice recommendations from the Whole30 Healthy Mama, Happy Baby team? This month they are focusing on all things baby and toddler feeding! Recently they wrote about their personal experiences with introducing solids and how their now toddlers eat. They’ve also compiled a list of their favorites plus recommendations from their community on Instagram for baby and toddler feeding over on their blog: HMHB Loves: Baby and Toddler Feeding.

Angelique All Day: Why You Should Take a Babymoon (and it isn’t for the reason you think!)

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

The lovely and talented mama-to-be and star of CBS’ Life in Pieces, Angelique Cabral, is back today sharing why every couple must, must, must go on a babymoon – and it isn’t for the reason you’d think! Read on to hear about Angelique’s experience on her babymoon and what she suggests all couples should do together before baby comes.

Want to see what Angelique wears to work out during pregnancy? She shares here!

2 weeks ago I went on my “babymoon,” which is something I:

a) didn’t think I would ever do (or want to do)
b) now that I’ve done it, can’t imagine NOT doing

My hubby and I struggled with the idea of a “babymoon”- it sounds so cheesy and excessive. It’s just a vacation! Call it that!! And it’s such a #thing, especially here in LA, that I rolled my eyes at the idea. And then there’s the issue of WHERE??? I had always envisioned jetting off to Cabo or Puerto Vallarta for a few romantic days. But now with the threat of Zika, Mexico is off limits. Then I was toying with the idea of something local, but I know me and my hubby, and we do not relax unless we are out of our area code. So I knew we had to get outta dodge.

I was talking to my Mom about her pregnancy with me, and she kept going on and on about the beauty of Hawaii (I was born in Honolulu)— the sweet air, afternoon rain showers, swimming in the ocean all day, the fresh fruit and chill vibe of the Islands…

And just like that, I was sold.

It made sense– to go back to my birthplace, carrying my own daughter, and complete this circle of life. I’m so #emo (not just now during pregnancy, but always) and it made me bawl just to think of it. I looked at all of the islands and what they have to offer, and decided on Kauai. It’s the most northern of the islands, and the most rural and untouched (besides Molakai which tourists aren’t encouraged, and Lenai, which was too remote for us). They call it The Garden Isle ’cause it’s so lush, and who doesn’t love a garden?

We stayed at the St. Regis in Princeville, which was stunning. I’m not a big spender (I clip coupons and love a bargain),  but had gotten a deal there so I splurged. Just this once. And boy, was it worth it. The room, our view, the hotel – everything about it was decadent and stunning and traditional “Old Hawaii” which was exactly what I was looking for.

Now even though it was amazing, the fact still remains that my husband and I aren’t great at relaxing, so it took us a good 2 days out of 5 to chill out. We were up every morning before 6 am (3 hour time change is reeeeeal tricky), went to the gym, hiked around the property, went out for breakfast, and were at the beach by 9 am. We explored the entire island (note: rent a car, totes worth it!!!), went on an incredible helicopter tour (most of the island is unreachable by car so it’s the only way to see it!!) and ate alllllll of the shaved ice. And we were in bed at 9pm. Nailed it!

And the whole time, I was just kinda treating this like a normal vacay, (without all the beverages LOL). I was very good at ignoring the elephant in the room which was: THIS IS OUR BABYMOON! The last vacay just the two of us! Before our lives change forever! Before baby comes! It was all too deep and immense to think about, so I compartmentalized it, which I am very good at.

But then, on our last night there, I lost it. On our way to dinner in our tiny rental car, I was sweating and crying and snotting everywhere. I sobbed and wept like I never have.

Through snots, I was able to articulate all I had been keeping bottled up for…. maybe this entire pregnancy: I was going to be a Mom. And all of my thoughts and energy were going to go to this tiny person we created, whom I have yet to meet, but whom I already love more than anything. And I am already mourning NOT being pregnant. I’ve gotten so used to her being with me, taking her everywhere I go, protecting her from the outside world. She’s my bestie! And in a couple of short months, I she will be outside of me, and I will be empty, and I won’t be able to protect her anymore. And am I ready….? Can I do this….? It’s just too much to think about, so I hadn’t really until then, and my heart (and tear ducts) just burst open.

Jason, as always, is my rock, and stroked my hair and hand and told me all the right things: that it was all going to be ok, and that I’m already the best Mommy to our Baby, that we are ready and going to be great parents. He shared his own concerns and thoughts, and for the first time, I saw him as a Daddy, a man who will protect our daughter and love her unconditionally.

I took a deep, deep breath, and I felt so close to him, to our baby, to our new life that we are forging together. And as I wiped the snot away, I felt a sense of relief; to get all that off my chest and be honest with where I am at, and to know that I’m not alone in this.

And you guys – that was the babymoon! Not the vacation and the fancy hotel or the mocktails. That moment of bonding, meeting each other, hearing each other. That was it.

To all you out there who are expecting and are toying with the idea of a “babymoon,” I would encourage you to GO! Go somewhere and take a moment. It doesn’t have to be a fancy trip, or a huge vacation… it can be anything, even just a moment in your backyard. But, take the time. Carve out a special moment for you and your partner to check in, really see each other and hear each other. After all, you’re in this together and all you’re got is each other, so honor that.

Time goes super fast during pregnancy, and we are so swamped with doc appointments and registry stuff and baby showers and unsolicited advice from people, that we miss the big picture: this is about you and your partner and your Baby. That’s it. So take time for the 3 of you somehow, some way. You won’t regret it. I feel like it changed everything for me and Jas, and we came back excited and refreshed and ready to dive in. Here we go!

Breastfeeding + Babywearing with Tula

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

We have heard from countless mamas how babywearing makes their life so much easier; having two hands free means you can do (almost) everything you need to do, and keep your little one close enough to kiss at all times. Did you know you can even breastfeed while babywearing? It’s true! Our friends at Tula have some super helpful tips for breastfeeding while babywearing. Do you have any tips to add to this list? For more detailed instructions, plus a video to help guide you, check out this handy post from Tula. Looking to get a Tula Carrier for yourself? Check out our review of the Free-to-Grow Carrier – and don’t forget to add it to your registry!

1. Be confident – know that you are giving your child the greatest gifts: love, nourishment, and the best start to a healthy life.
2. Be patient – give yourself room and time to learn, and if you get frustrated, take a break, reconnect with your baby, and do something else that makes you happy.
3. Dress accordingly – wearing a nursing top can really help with easy access for you and baby.
4. Loosen up – slightly loosen your arm straps and slightly slide your waistband down for more comfortable feeding.
5. Use your hands – oftentimes breastfeeding in a baby carrier is not truly hands free, as your hands may be needed to support your baby, breast, or a bottle, but just helps to make it a bit easier and mobile.
6. Use a blanket if you prefer extra privacy – but make sure you maintain visibility of baby to ensure their airway is open.
7. Reposition after feeding – whether they fall asleep or not, always reposition your baby to a snug, ergonomic position if you have lowered or reclined them to feed.
8. Check baby’s chin – as you latch your little one, make sure that he or she is keeping his or her chin off of her chest (you should be able to fit between 1-2 adult fingers underneath his or her chin) and that baby’s nose is free to ensure a clear airway.
9. Ensure baby has proper support – if you are breastfeeding in a Baby Tula Ring Sling, we recommend gently lifting and supporting your baby’s weight with one arm while lifting the top ring to loosen slightly with the other hand.
10. Maintain proper positioning –  it is important to maintain the tummy-to-tummy position and keep knees higher than bottom in a deep M-position throughout the time that you are nursing.
11. Listen to your baby – listen to your child while he or she is nursing: snoring, grunting, or other noises can be an indicator of distressed breathing, and you should unlatch and reposition if these things occur, or if you visually notice an obstructed airway for any reason, or that baby’s chin has fallen to his or her chest.
