5 Easy Ways to Reduce Your Footprint

by Jenna Hatfield Leave a Comment

There’s a lot of “stuff” associated with the act of parenting. From gear to clothing to feeding and beyond, it just seems like the stuff will never end. Maybe you’re a minimalist parent or maybe you’re just eco-conscious. You may even be looking to simplify your everyday. There are easy ways to help make a difference for our Earth and reduce your footprint as a parent.

Get Thrifty

Shopping second-hand is a great way to reduce your footprint as a parent. You’ll also save money by doing so! Everything from sleepers to everyday clothing to toys can be found at your local second-hand store. Check in at the end of a season to find coats and jackets that other children outgrew. If you do not have any local options for second-hand shopping, consider websites like Poshmark and ThredUp. Both have sections for children’s clothing. While you will have shipping costs and packaging involved in the process, you’ll still help keep clothing out of landfills and save some money in the process.

Cloth Diaper

Photo by Laura Ohlman on Unsplash

Keeping one-use diapers out of landfills by using cloth diapers is a smart way to reduce your footprint as well. While it does require an upfront investment, cloth diapers can be used for multiple children through a number of years. You can take it one step further by also using cloth wipes. As a bonus, cloth diapering options often help when it comes to babies with super sensitive skin. If cloth isn’t right for you and your baby, consider a more eco-conscious diaper brand like healthynest!

Make Your Own Baby Food

Ditch pre-made baby food from the store and start making your own baby food. On top of tasting better, you’ll help eliminate plastic waste and help chip away the production cost associated with industrialized food processing. As a bonus, you will know exactly what goes into your baby’s little body—and it will taste better to them as well. Not sure where to start? Check out what some parents in our Gugu Village had to say about the Mumum Baby Food Maker.

Pass Things On

Once you’re done with a size of baby clothing, some developmental toys, and your maternity clothing, don’t just store them in tubs in your basement or throw them away. Pass them on to family and friends who can use them. Not only will you help reduce your footprint by keeping useable material in service, but you may be helping someone out who can’t verbalize they need some assistance. If you don’t have any close friends or family in need of your ages and stages items, consider finding a clothing and toy swap. If there’s not one in your area, reach out to some local charities or organizations to see if they would be interested in helping you start one in your area. Think of the change you’d be creating by being the one to say, “I can help!”

Get Crafty

It’s difficult to eliminate every single piece of one-use plastic or other types of containers in our lives. As an example, if you need to formula feed, you regularly have an empty container. Instead of tossing it (into your recycling bin if possible!), consider various ways to craft it into something else. Make it into a pot for some new plants. Can you store something in it? What about making it into a drum for your toddler? If you can use something even once or twice more, you’re helping cut down on waste. Look at something twice before tossing it in the bin.

Eco-Friendly (and Affordable) Baby Registry Picks

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Since organic often carries a high price tag, Gugu Guru gets a lot of inquiries about affordable eco-friendly baby registry picks on a tighter budget. The first simple step you can take toward leaving a smaller footprint, is just buying less for baby. Below, we have laid out some of our top eco-friendly must-haves from brands we know and love. While you may be willing to splurge on a few of these categories, we also have included some excellent budget-friendly must-haves.

Eco-Friendly Stroller/Car Seat Picks:
On-the-go parents want easy-to-use strollers and car seats that will also be safe for their little ones. Looking for full-size? Check out Bumbleride. They have a number of stroller options (including an excellent double stroller for multiples and a jogging stroller for runners!) all made from recycled materials. We love their focus on sustainability.

Looking for something a bit lighter and cost-effective? Here at Gugu Guru, we can’t say enough good things about Larktale. Their Chit Chat and Chit Chat Plus are made from recycled materials, allowing you to stroll green from your newborn days. They are also extremely lightweight, making them a great option for everyday use, in and out of the car, and travel!

When looking at Infant Car Seats, it’s important to pick one that is compatible with the stroller you have selected. With car seats, we are looking at the chemicals used in production as well as non-toxic materials being used. We love car seats that use natural fire-retardant fabrics and often find ourselves recommending these over many others! Nuna, Britax, Clek, and Chicco all have excellent car seat options!

Still have questions? Contact us for help!

Eco-Friendly Baby Carrier Picks:
As a first step, to identify the best product for you personally, try locating a Babywearing International chapter to attend a meeting to try some on. We often recommend the Tula Free to Grow, Baby K’tan Organic wrap (note: you have to choose a size for the K’tan) and Beco Gemini Organic carriers to our eco-friendly families.

Eco-Friendly Crib Mattress Pick:
Crib mattress recommendations are something we often discuss at length with our eco-friendly families. While there are many brands we love, we always want to make sure you are looking for the Greenguard GOLD certified label on any crib mattress. This will ensure that while your little one is sleeping, the mattress is emitting the lowest levels of VOCs. We also recommend looking for 2-sided mattresses and lastly, look at the weight of your crib mattress. It is very difficult to lift a 30+lb mattress out of the crib for middle-of-the-night sheet changes. We highly recommend taking a look at mattresses by Colgate and Nook.

Eco-Friendly Diaper Pail Pick:
The Ubbi Diaper Pail not only keeps in the lovely diaper smell but also saves you money as you can use standard 13-gallon trash bags as a liner. This eco-friendly pail is made of steel and comes in several different colors to perfectly match your babe’s nursery.

Eco-Friendly Bathtub Pick:
BPA, PVC, and Phthalate-free, the Puj Tub fits right into the sink. Great for travel and apartment living too, as it folds flat and can fit in your suitcase!

Eco-Friendly Swaddle blankets Pick:
Swaddle blankets will be EVERYTHING to you from birth and beyond and we love the ones by Rookie Humans. The perfect swaddling blanket made from sustainable bamboo, you can also use as a breastfeeding cover or a light layer during walks. You will use these well into toddlerhood and beyond. Highly recommend these blankets as a must-have on every registry!

Eco-Friendly Playard/portable crib Pick:
The Guava Lotus Travel Crib and Portable Baby Playard portable crib and playard combo has breathable mesh sides that unzip for even more fun for your kiddo as s/he gets older. It is non-toxic and is free of PVC, lead, and flame retardants, and is certified to the GreenGuard Gold standard.

Healthynest Diapering Program

Eco-Friendly Diaper Picks:
HealthyNest Diapers is the newest to the gang. The world’s first EWG Verified diaper, you can feel comfortable putting your little one in HealthyNest diapers. They are soft, not too bulky, and do an excellent job at keeping messes contained.

Honest Company Diapers are also made with sustainable materials that are super-absorbent. The core is made of fluff pulp harvested from sustainably managed forests. The diaper does prevent most leaks and blowouts. Honest diapers are made without chlorine or bleach processing, without latex, synthetic fragrances, or lotions. Not to mention, the prints are to die for!

Playard Picks: 2022 Edition

by Abby Ludwig 1 Comment

Playards have become a necessity for many families over the last 10 years. They are the true multi-functional item that you will use again and again as your little one grows. In the newborn days, your playard may be a safe sleep spot for the baby. It takes up a small amount of space next to your bed, keeping the baby close for those middle-of-the-night feeds. Many playards have a bassinet setting, which is also great for naps throughout the day. The changing station (which is included with many playards) is an excellent place to change your little one, especially if the nursery is far from your play area. Plus, the playard will easily fold up for travel and is a great place for your toddler to sleep while on the go. A true must-have, take a look at our best playards for 2022.

Breeze® Plus Playard With Bassinet & Changer | 4moms®

Easiest Fold: 4moms Breeze Plus

The 4moms breeze plus is a playard, bassinet, and changing table in one. It is easy to move around the house, always giving you a convenient place for the baby to sleep. The Breeze Plus is extremely easy to open/close and is an excellent secondary changing station. The bassinet is compatible with up to 18 pounds while the playard will hold up to 30 pounds. The removable bassinet, changer, and playard are all easy to clean with a simple damp cloth.

Eco-friendly Pick: Lotus Travel Crib from Guava Family

The lightest playard, the Lotus is GreenGuard Gold non-toxic certified (low VOC & no lead, phthalates, PVC, heavy metals, etc.). Full-height mesh guarantees breathable airflow. Plus, parents are just crazy about the side access panel that allows you easy access through the lockable door. Set up is simple and the Lotus playard only weighs 13 lbs packed, making it an excellent choice for travel. The Lotus comes with a backpack carrying case and a thick, soft foam pad approved for overnight sleep (0-3 years old.) They have also launched their Bassinet & Crib Kit.

Budget Pick: Graco Pack n Play Reversible Napper & Changer LX

The Graco Pack n Play Reversible Napper & Changer includes a newborn napper station for baby to sleep and reverses to a changing table for easy diaper changes. After baby outgrows the removable full-size bassinet, the Graco Pack n Play easily converts to a portable playard. The napper and bassinet can be used for babies up to 15 pounds. This playard also includes a toy bar with plush toys.

Multiples Pick: Romp & Roost

Romp & Roost is the ultimate playard for twins or even just for one baby. This stylish, oversized playard can be used for a play area or sleep space. This play yard includes a patented, removable divider that separates the space into two spacious spaces with an airy mesh fabric. The Romp & Roost features large wheels with brakes and a convenient carry bag making it perfect for trips to grandma’s house.

Modern Pick: Nuna Sena Aire

The Nuna Sena Aire is an easy-to-use playard with an innovative, chic design you won’t mind having out in your home.  Unlike many other playards, the Nuna Sena Aire is easy to open and close with one hand and easily slides into the included travel bag.  You can be sure your baby is comfy with full mesh sides and the included quilted mattress. The mattress can be used in the higher position as a bassinet and easily moves to the lower position for use until your little one is 30 pounds.

Minimalist Pick: Bugaboo Stardust

Looking for something unique that meets your minimalist aesthetic? Bugaboo Stardust unfolds in 1 second and stores easily. Great for that room where you need baby to nap, but want your floor space back each morning! An excellent choice for toddler play in a small space.

Kudos to Kudos Diapers!

by Abby Ludwig Leave a Comment

We are always on the search for great product lines at Gugu Guru. Especially products that parents use constantly. Ask any Mom what her favorite diaper is and it’s likely she’ll rattle off multiple brands. Some are great for newborns, some are a better fit for chunky thighs, and others are great for big bellies. Some are thick and soft, some are thin but surprisingly absorbent. Why can’t one diaper do it all?!

I think we’ve found one! Kudos Diapers are 100% plant-based cotton, helping little ones with sensitive skin stay rash-free. Great for eczema-prone skin, these fragrance-free diapers have no extra ‘yucks!’ They are absorbent, thick without being bulky, and fit well. Even their packaging is recyclable and sustainably sourced. Read below to see how moms from our Gugu Village feel about Kudos!

Sarah

I LOVE the feel of the Kudos diapers! They are made with cotton and you can tell in the softness. The side tabs also feel much sturdier and stretchy and would be very hard to pull off.

Our 9lb 7 week old wears NB in Huggies and the size 1 fit well, so definitely look at the size chart when ordering. These diapers are very absorbent without the risk of leaking inner material onto your baby if they get overly full.

Joanie

These diapers fit my baby so well! I’ve used them overnight (12 hours) and have no problems with leaks. I love that they are extra long in the front and back – hold in lots of liquid for my son overnight and also prevent blowouts in the back. The sizing runs slightly larger than the Huggies and Kirkland diapers that I normally use.

Some Major Pros:

-You can really feel the difference [in the fabric] when you’re comparing to Kirkland and Huggies. The material feels less plasticky and much more breathable.

-Knowing that I dispose of 6-10 diapers per day and they can take up to 500 years to decompose, I really wanted to find a good, eco-friendly diaper! The patterns

-Aesthetically, the patterns are absolutely adorable!

-I’ve tried so many diapers and I’m happy to find something that is so absorbent it works for 12+ hours with my son.

Jessica

I’ve tried a few different diaper brands, but I must say that these Kudos diapers are so soft compared to others. I like the fact the company uses plant-based materials to make the diapers. The waist band is extremely stretchy and they seemed to fit my little one very comfortably. Theses diapers are super absorbent and my little one did not have any leaks or blow outs while wearing them. I also like the different patterns and designs that comes on the diapers. On the other hand, I did notice the entire pack of white diapers I received contained small black specks on the inside of the diapers. I attempted to rub them off but they do not come off. Overall, the diapers are good. I had zero leaks and zero blow outs which is a win for me.

Zoe

I really like the idea of cotton diapers, so I was excited to try these diapers out. Upon receiving and testing them for the course of about 2 weeks, I thought the cotton felt nice and breathable on her skin for both daytime and overnight wear. Their absorbency was on par with other diaper brands we use. I felt good about the environmental implications of cotton vs other materials from other diapers. The prints were cute, fun and added some pizazz which I liked.

During the course of testing these, my baby’s weight ranged from about 8.5 to 9 pounds, so we tested out the size 1 diaper. I felt it fit pretty true to size for a size 1 contrary to being told they run small. She wears size 1 in Huggies and Pampers. I did feel that the elastic around her leg could be a little more taught in order to really “seal” around her legs. I also personally like when the Velcro tabs are not white (ex: Pampers has yellow tabs) or when there is an indication of front vs back so that it is easy to identify the front when changing diapers in limited light for night changes.

Annie

My kids have the most sensitive skin. We are constantly at the dermatologist trying new creams, ointments, etc. to keep their eczema at bay. I was excited to try the Kudos diapers as they 100% cotton, soft, and fragrance-free. I have often run into issues with other ‘clean’ diapers as they are stiff and rough against my littles skin. Not Kudos diapers! They felt a little thin when I first took them out of the packaging, but they easily kept leaks at bay. My toddler (20 months) was able to move around without any extra diaper bulk and didn’t have any issues with the absorbency. I loved that they didn’t take up as much space in the drawer, so I could fit the full pack in our dresser.

Thanks to Kudos for letting some of our moms test your great product!

On the Go Gear for Eco-friendly Families

by Abby Ludwig Leave a Comment

Your life is busy and full of complicated stuff. Your baby gear should be simple. It should be easy. Most importantly, it should be something you love to use. When we come across excellent products, we need to ‘shout it from the rooftop!’ Bumbleride strollers are our go-to recommendation when working with eco-friendly families. Born in San Diego, Bumbleride’s stroller line can do it all. They are all-terrain strollers, not too heavy, and designed for all of life’s adventures.

While all of this is great, our favorite part about the brand is their dedication to the materials. They put great pride in using recycled materials and production processes that will create the safest strollers for your littles. Pair with some of our other top Eco-Friendly (and Affordable) finds and you’ve got all your basics covered.

Want to learn more? Read about their materials here and their manufacturing processes here. Cheers to Bumbleride for focusing on sustainability!

Bumbleride Era

One of our top recommended strollers at Gugu Guru, Era changed the game for eco-friendly families. With its reversible seat, quick compact fold, and small footprint, this is the perfect stroller choice for city, suburbs, or country! The stroller is newborn compatible (on it’s deepest recline or with a car seat adapter) and has excellent storage. Plus it’s air-filled tires (and included air pump) will help push through anything. This stroller is truly one of a kind!

Don’t take our word for it!

See what Brittany Littleton (Mom of 3 & Vegan Restauranteur) had to say:
“Over the past few years, sustainability has become trendy. This would be great, except that so much of what is marketed as “eco-friendly” isn’t at all. Especially in the baby market, there is SO MUCH PLASTIC WASTE. If you want something high end AND kind to the planet? Forget about it. Until @bumbleride — they have a true mission of sustainability with documented proof. They are constantly seeking to improve and being transparent about their operations. The fact that this fabric is made fully from recycled plastic water bottles makes my heart happy. I have hope we can create a beautiful future for our little ones.”

Bumbleride Indie

This do it all single stroller is a great choice for families who like to constantly be on the move. Great for unpaved trails, sidewalks, grass, and more, the Indie can push over anything. Its all-wheel suspension, air-filled tires will give you an excellent push and it will hold your little one up to 55 lbs. This stroller can take a car seat and reclines flat enough to be newborn compatible, making it a perfect option from day 1. Great for a day at the beach or a walk to the park!

Eco-friendly Family with multiples? Looking for a great double option for your toddler + baby? Check out the Indie Twin, which offers all of the same great features noted above, but with two seats! And for those twin moms? Yes! It will take 2 car seats!

Bumbleride Speed

Active and eco-minded? Bumbleride has you covered! Their Speed stroller can run, walk, and jog with you through every errand and activity. One of the lightest-weight jogging strollers on the market, the Speed will double as your everyday stroller. With it’s large wheels and huge canopy, this stroller is the perfect choice for your little ones up to 65 lbs. Just make sure not to run with your little one until cleared by your pediatrician and Bumbleride will take care of the rest.

Looking for more active must-haves? Check out some of our favorite Gear for Active Families.

No matter what your day’s activities look like, Bumbleride has a stroller to meet your needs. Thank you so much to Bumbleride for making this sponsored post happen and for creating excellent products to help take care of our babies and our planet.

Gamechanger for Bathtime: Moms Love Bubbsi

by Abby Ludwig Leave a Comment

Looking for a bath routine to top all others? We had five moms test out Bubbsi’s Newborn Starter Set with their little ones. Bubbsi is revolutionizing the bath game. Utilizing coconut oil, they have created a line of bath products safe for newborns battling a variety of skin concerns. Eczema, Diaper Rash, and Cradle Cap be warned, you are receiving your eviction notice! Keep your little one’s skin nourished this winter with Bubbsi.

Abby, 4 year old twins, 17 month old twins, Chicago IL

Having 4 kids with sensitive skin, I am always on the hunt for new skincare lines. Generally, we look for things that are fragrance-free (and sesame-free, thanks to allergies!), tear-free, and easy-to-follow. Some of the skincare lines I’ve tried with my kids have had up to 8 steps, making them nearly impossible to complete daily. Our pediatric dermatologist has always spoken about the benefits of coconut oil, but when I tried putting this on my kids directly, we all ended up greasy and miserable. Enter Bubbsi! The answer to our daily struggles! First off, the bottles are adorable! Quite honestly, they became a nice distraction for my babies during bathtime. Next, they are refillable. No more spending $$$ on new bottles every time you need a replacement, and with 4 kids, it’s often! Lastly, they work! My kids’ skin was nourished, moisturized, and the steps were easy enough for my 4-year-olds to follow without any help. I will definitely be recommending this to my friends!

Anya, 1 year old + 3 year old, Rhode Island

I was so excited to try Bubbsi. I’m always looking for all natural products for my girls. They have super sensitive skin and sometimes get eczema from food allergies and colder weather. I love the fact that Bubbsi is almost fully naturally derived and I don’t worry about putting that on their skin. Both my girls have full heads of hair and I have been looking to try a shampoo and conditioner. The shampoo really cleans well but left their hair a bit dry so you definitely need to use the conditioner with it. The conditioner left their hair super silky with no knots and made it easy to brush out. As for the cream I was shocked. My younger daughter has little spots of keratosis on her arms and they almost went completely away after only one use and the diaper cream left her super smooth and protected. So excited to find Bubbsi and will continue to purchase in the future!

Katherine, 5 year old + 10 month old, North Carolina

I was given the Bubbsi head-to-toe set to try. First off, the packaging was super cute. I love that the packing peanuts dissolve in water! What a great way to help the environment. The products all smell wonderful. It’s a light scent, so it isn’t overpowering at all. My son and I both love the squishy feel of the bottles. The shampoo/body wash, lotion, and balm are soothing to both mine and my baby’s sensitive skin. We also appreciate that it is peanut and tree nut allergy friendly!

Overall, I give it a 5 out of 5! We will definitely be Bubbsi customers for a long time!

Erica, 2 1/2 year old + 9 month old, San Diego CA

I received the Bubbsi product via Gugu Guru and was so excited to try it out. Upon opening the box the smell was wonderful. I tried the body wash and lotion with both of my boys, age 9 months and 2 ½ .

Packaging: Absolutely love the packaging, design, and colors. Both of my boys immediately took to playing with the packaging. With that, I also had to make sure they didn’t have anything without supervision ☺

Feedback: The biggest thing I noticed was due to the consistency of the product and because it is cream-based, the water in the bath got murky. It’s inevitable that my kids put bathwater in their mouths, but this time I was careful to make sure they didn’t. I ended the bath a bit early so I could drain the tub.

Although I LOVED the packaging, smell, and overall look I wasn’t a fan of the creaminess and the residue it left in the tub. The lotion was great, but I found the small was just a bit too much for my kids and I used it on myself.

Thank you to Bubbsi for letting our moms test their products!

5 Moms Tackle Diapering with healthynest

by Abby Ludwig Leave a Comment

Eco-minded parents can rejoice! The newest diapers from healthynest have arrived and are everything you’re looking for when keeping your little one clean. The world’s first EWG-verified diaper, you can rest assured that you are making safe choices for both your baby and our planet. Read below to see what 5 moms from our Gugu Village had to say.

Nikki, 2-month-old, Size 1

We’ve had the pleasure of trying out these amazing, all-natural and organic disposable diapers and wipes. After one week of use, we have had no issues with leaking, rashes, or sensitivities with the diapers or wipes (both wet and dry) while using them during both day and night, and stretches of 6-9 hours for nights. Both the diapers and the wipes are very soft, and they’re thin as well. With the cotton dry wipes, I love that I can mix my own solution to use on them.

I really love these diapers! We’ve had quite a few poo-splosions while using them, and with any other diaper, we would have had poo everywhere. But, these diapers amazingly contain everything with their double gussets and absorption power! They’re sleek, all-natural, organic, slim, and perfect.

Naomi, 4-month-old, Size 2

We have really enjoyed using the healthynest diapers & wipes this week. Mia is our third child, so we have tried quite a few different brands of diapers over the years! One of the best features of this diaper that both my husband and I commented on separately is how thin they are! We are on the go a lot, so to be able to have these slim diapers in the diaper bag and not take up a ton of room has been great! Impressively, even though they are thinner than most diapers, she has not had any leaks or blowouts, which is pretty impressive. I really appreciate the eco-friendly nature of the diapers, and will consider using them in the future!

Callie, 3-month-old, size 2

Diapers are softer and seem to be of higher quality than most mainstream brands. The organic cotton doesn’t irritate the skin. I do miss having a wetness indicator, especially at this age. The wet wipes are a good size and don’t rip, but come out of the package with ease. I was confused by the dry wipes at first… I had never used or heard of them before, so I did a little research and found that most websites recommend spraying your baby’s bottom with something before using them (what’s the point of a dry wipe then?). Nothing like that came with the dry wipes I received so I tried the by themselves and found that they left balled up pieces of wipe on my baby’s skin, so I prefer the wet wipes for diaper changes. The dry wipes aren’t bad for wiping her mouth or hands though.

Trang, 1-year-old, Size 4

I love the design of the birds on the diapers, however, I wished they all had designs on them. The other diapers are just plain white diapers. I wish it tells you that the diapers are soiled by the colors changing on them like other diapers do. The brand advertises that it is good up to 12 hours, however, I do not find that to be true in my case. I have been using the diapers for exactly a week and have experienced my son peeing out of it 4 nights out of the 7 nights. After around 6-7 hours, I find myself having to wake my son up in the middle of the night to change my son’s diapers and clothes. This is something I have not had to do with other brands. The wet wipes are difficult to pull out of the package, but are good quality fabric-wise. They did not rip or tear.

Stephanie, 5-month-old, Size 2

Healthynest was kind enough to send us a box package of diapers & wipes! My oldest daughter loved unboxing the diapers… The packaging was wonderful!! I will be honest at first I felt the diapers were a little thin and was worried they may leak, however, they’re fine for daytime use! They do however leak if left without being changed all night. They are very soft so I’m sure very comfortable on my baby’s bum!!

As for the dry wipes, I love this idea! Because if they get a butt rash they will be perfect to damp with warm water to wipe!!!

And the wet wipes, I love that they aren’t too wet like many wipes are!

Thank you to healthynest for letting our moms test this out!
