Registry Dilemma: Newborn Clothing

by Abby Ludwig Leave a Comment

When it comes to adding newborn clothing to your registry, we at Gugu Guru tend to think ‘less is more.’ People LOVE to gift baby clothes. You will receive more outfits, onesies, and (if you’re like many moms in our village) baby shoes. You may be wondering, ‘Does a newborn baby need shoes?’ The answer is a simple ‘No, they do not.’ But gift-givers just can’t help it! Those newborn shoes are TOO cute.

Parents come to our Concierge team all the time with the same question, “What newborn clothing do I actually need?” While we recommend leaving all of the fancy outfits, shoes, and seasonal clothing off of your registry, there are a few things we think you should have.

Mom Hack: Scroll down for a checklist of these essentials!

Twins/Multiples Hack: You don’t need double of everything. Stick with gender-neutral items for the basics and you can mix and match as needed those early days!

The Bare Essentials

Your newborn’s wardrobe will consist of a few categories: swaddles, onesies, hats, and pajamas. For most parents, these items are enough to get them through the first 4-8 weeks without feeling like they need much more.

Wearable swaddles and swaddle blankets (check out the difference here) will be a vital part of your early wardrobe. We recommend having about 4-8 of these that you can circulate through, as they will get messy throughout the day.

Onesies and Pajamas will be your little one’s main ‘outfit’ each day. Depending on the season and climate where your little one is born, you may want more of one or the other. Side-snap onesies are always the easiest for the earliest days. Eventually, you may move into short or long-sleeve onesies, great for containing diaper blowouts. Sizing can be tricky as many brands fit differently. Stick with some basic onesies (6-10) in 0-3 months to start and see what works for your babe! Pajamas are another must for those early days. Look for pajamas with foot muffs (and foldover hand muffs, too!). Again, we recommend having about 5-7 of these to start.

Hats are also a must for your little one from day 1. The general rule of thumb is to keep your little dressed in one more layer than you. Babies lose lots of body heat through their head and their limbs. Keeping their head bundled will help regulate body temperature.

The Extras

Eventually, you will come out of the newborn daze and start getting a few more hours of sleep each night. At this point you may feel ready for baby’s first outfits. Look for pants and shirts that are easy to get on/off. Sweatpants or leggings are perfect for newborns. Remember, they can’t yet help push their limbs through clothing, so anything that’s too tight will be a no-go. At this point you may choose to use onesies as your shirt. If not, choose simple tops with stretchy necklines. 3-5 pairs of pants and 6-10 shirts are perfect for the rotation. Again, wait to see how your little one is growing before you buy too much! At 2 months old, some babies are wearing newborn size and others are wearing size 6 month.

Seasonal Clothing

Depending on where you live and in what season you deliver, you may or may not need seasonal clothing. Thick coats and buntings aren’t safe for the car seats. Instead, we recommend layering to keep your little one warm. Feel free to break out a bunting or fleece suit for baby in the stroller though. Socks are also an essential, but don’t always stay on. (Mom hack: Check out Squid Socks, which really do stay on from Day 1!) We also love booties for the coldest weather! Try hard not to buy too far ahead. Throughout the first year, it can be hard to predict how your baby will grow season to season.

Newborn Clothing Checklist

6-10 onesies
6-10 undershirts
5-7 one-piece pajamas
1-3 sweaters or jackets
1-3 rompers or other outfits
6-8 socks or booties
1-3 hats (broad-brimmed for summer, soft cap that covers ears for winter)
No-scratch mittens
3-5 pairs of pants
4-6 swaddle blankets
Bunting bag or fleece suit for a winter baby in the stroller
Gentle laundry detergent

Real Moms Review: Territory Foods

by Abby Ludwig Leave a Comment

Looking for the perfect gift for any busy Mom or Dad? Territory Foods is a ready-to-heat ‘n eat nutritional food delivery service prepared by local chefs in your communities. Focused on nutrient-dense and sustainable ingredients, we sent a package to 4 New York City moms to see what they thought of the meals.

Zoe, Expectant Mom

We received 6 meals from Territory Foods this week. It was very helpful that the packaging was labeled that the contents were perishable and that it must be refrigerated. I live in an apartment building so it allowed my doorman to let us know immediately upon arrival of the package to avoid the product spoiling. I also liked that the individual food packages had a clear plastic lid so that I could see what each item looked like before deciding what I wanted to eat for my lunch or dinner. The instructions for preparation along with the nutritional facts and content was very straight forward and easy to understand. If I were to have an allergy or food aversion I would definitely be able to know if the contents contained a “problem item” before I opened it or ate it.

The food itself was very tasty and different from what I normally cook myself, which I liked. I was introduced to new items (like Right Rice) and exciting flavors (like coconut curry). The portion size was just right which can sometimes be an issue in prepackaged meals. My husband and I split 2 meals for dinner one night and had a little bit leftover. I had 1 meal for lunch the following day with a small amount of basmati rice leftover, mostly because I tried to exhibit self control on the carb intake! All in all, I was very happy with Territory Foods and would recommend to anyone who was trying to make their life easier but was still interested in food that tasted good!

Becky, Vegetarian Mom of 2 (Newborn + 3 year old)

The food came hand-delivered and packaged nicely. We enjoyed the tofu Mediterranean bowl the most; very flavorful and tasted very fresh. The gazpacho was a nice side-dish. The breakfast items (oatmeal and baked eggs) were both very hearty and nice warm breakfasts. The ginger chickpea dish was flavorful, but very spicy! The portabella mushrooms were a bit oily and slightly bland. The paleo brownies were a great healthy dessert! Overall, the dishes looked good and tasted good. They heated up well and were perfect for busy new parents of 2!

Joanie, Mom of 2 (4 month old + 4 year old)

I loved the salads! They were a refreshing and healthy option. It’s so difficult to find a good salad that fills me up and has protein in it that actually tastes good. Each of the meals was perfectly portioned and tasted healthy but delicious. I love how easy it is to have all the meals prepped and easily heated in the microwave. As a mom of an infant and a toddler, this saved me and my husband so much time and the best part was knowing that we were still eating clean. The brownie was really good as well! My mom tried the brownie in comparison to a full fat gluten-full brownie and could not taste the difference.

Danielle, Toddler Mom

The food was very tasty and arrived cold & packaged well. There was quite a bit of packaging to discard which didn’t really bother me personally, but I can see some people not liking this for environmental reasons.  I liked how all the toppings, sauces etc, were in their own containers within, so nothing arrived mixed up or soggy.  I thought the vegetarian dish (butcher’s daughter right rice tabouli), while tasty, felt like a giant bowl of rice for lunch/dinner & probably wouldn’t order something like this in the future.  The sauces were all fresh and delicious and I enjoyed the variety of items in each of the other meals.

Thank you to Territory Foods for letting our moms test this out!

Must-Haves for the Modern Parent

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

We know it can be overwhelming to figure out what baby products you need, which is why we’re such a huge fan of these brands and their must-have baby products designed specifically with the modern parent in mind. Read on below to see why we always recommend Diaper Dékor Diaper Pails, Love to Dream Swaddle UP, Lascal m1 Baby Carrier, and Nomi High Chair.

Diaper Dekor

The Diaper Dékor is a must-have for any nursery! Unlike other traditional diaper disposal systems where you have to bend over, operate a lid, or even shove a soiled diaper inside the diaper pail, Dékor diaper pails are 100% hands-free. Dékor considered what real life with a baby or toddler really looks like, and designed the Dékor diaper pail to make your life easier. After a diaper change, modern parents are likely to have the baby in one arm and the soiled diaper in the other. Shockingly, no one has a third hand to operate the diaper pail, so what do you do? Well, when it comes to the Dékor diaper pail, simply just STEP on the foot pedal, DROP the soiled diaper through the trap door, and you’re DONE! Coming in a variety of colors, you’re sure to find the perfect one for your baby’s nursery. Plus, they come in different sizes, so you can have them all over the house – and they have a Cloth Diaper Liner as well, which works perfectly in their Plus-sized diaper pail!

Love to Dream SwaddleUP

Sleep is imperative as a new parent, but can be hard to come by! As a modern mama, you take any chance you can to catch some winks, and Love to Dream’s Swaddle Up is here to help. Love to Dream realized that traditional swaddling is often difficult for new parents to master, and often the swaddle unravels throughout the night, which leads to baby “escaping” and waking up! Babies sleep better and longer with their arms up in the natural position. Love To Dream has revolutionized swaddling so that everyone can swaddle correctly, every time, so babies will have a safer, more comfortable sleep. Love To Dream’s Swaddle UP is the only zip-up swaddle that allows the baby to sleep in a more natural position with arms UP.

Love to Dream also considered families while creating the Swaddle UP and wanted to make the sleep time experience as stress-free as possible. The Swaddle UP helps parents swaddle their baby quickly and safely every time and eliminates excess loose fabric in the crib. Plus, the genius two-way zipper for easy diaper changes and hip-healthy design allows hips and legs to flex naturally. Coming in a variety of colors, the Love to Dream Swaddle UP is a sleep-time must-have for babies!

Lascal Carrier

Any working mom knows how important it is to get as much done as you can in your free time, which is why it’s so important to be able to comfortably wear baby, so you can have two hands! We’re loving the Lascal m1 Baby Carrier for so many reasons. Parents love the Lascal m1 Baby Carrier because it is extremely comfortable and easy-to-use. Whether you’re running errands, traveling, or simply bopping around the house, the Lascal m1 Baby Carrier has everything you need. Keep baby snuggled in close to you, safe and shielded from germs. Offering 3 unique carrying positions within an ergonomic design, this supportive accessory carries your child in optimal comfort. The Lascal m1 Baby Carrier is ideal for infants because the Infant M-Seat allows babies weighing 8-12 lbs. to always sit in the most ergonomic hip-friendly “M-Position” with knees higher than the hip. In fact, parents can rest easy knowing that the m1 Carrier is acknowledged by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute (IHDI) as hip-healthy by giving correct support for your baby’s legs, hips, and spine.

The adjustable lumbar support provides lower back comfort and a wide padded waist belt and shoulder straps relieve stress on the wearer’s shoulders and neck. The m1 fits all shapes and sizes with just a few quick adjustments using the intuitive and easy-to-use buckles, making it a breeze to put on and take off. Plus, their Strap-Tidies keep all loose straps neatly folded for a clean and nice look.

Nomi High Chair

When it comes to high chairs, we’re pretty much obsessed with the sleek and modern design from Nomi. There are just so many reasons to be in love with the Nomi High Chair! Nomi is the next generation high chair that seamlessly adjusts without tools, and evolves with children’s changing needs from birth all the way through the teenage years! The Nomi can be used before baby can even sit on his/her own. You can actually start using this amazing high chair right away from birth with the addition of the Nomi Baby raised bouncer attachment (sold separately). Having baby at the same height of the table from birth means you can enjoy your special meal time moments with every member of the family. This means less standing up and sitting down for you, and more time to eat! Plus, the Nomi is modern and chic, and doesn’t take up a ton of space, so it’s ideal for small space living.

Thank you to Dékor, Love to Dream, Lascal, and Nomi for making this sponsored post possible!

The Scoop: Baby Boldly Birth Bag – Fully Prepared

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Preparedness and Motherhood rarely go hand in hand, but Baby Boldly has created an all-in-one hospital bag that will do just that. As a third-time mom-to-be, I should know everything that I am going to need to bring to the hospital for labor and delivery.  However, as a third-time mom-to-be, I have two other little loves to worry about packing for as well.  On top of everyday life – school, kids’ activities, work, meal planning, laundry, cleaning, etc. – preparing for baby #3 has been a little more stressful and a lot more time-crunched than I expected. Having the Baby Boldly Birth Bag: Fully Prepared pre-packed and shipped directly to me has checked at least one thing off of my list.

Truly Comprehensive –

With over 30+ unique pieces, my birth bag was packed ensuring I had every essential, not just some of them. With items to help with labor, nursing, showering, and any down-time in between I am confident that I will be covered.  Additionally, 1 thing I love is that there is still room left in the main bag for me to add in any personal items I might choose to bring as well.

Non-toxic + Practical –

I guess you could consider me a “Scrunchy Mom” since I strive to find a balance between choosing products that are as natural as possible but also are convenient.  The toiletries and personal care items included were sourced to ensure that they are non-toxic and contain quality ingredients especially as momma’s senses are heightened during this unique time in her life.  My bag included items from brands I was already familiar with and confident in like Pharmacopia, Burt’s Bees, Schmitt’s, Tom’s, Earth Mama, Bamboobies, and Rael.

The weekender bag itself is made from easy-to-clean nylon with vegan leather accents and features magnetic closures, a zippered top, and 10 pockets + a toiletry bag. As someone who typically packs in cubes and travel pouches galore, I am thrilled for the organizational options and the future possibilities to use it as a diaper bag, pumping bag, or duffle.

Designed by Mamas, For Mamas –

Maybe my favorite aspect of the Birth Bag: Fully Prepared is the support and thoughtfulness that comes along with it.  Right when you open the box, there is a note from the Baby Boldly team encouraging you and letting you know that you are not alone and that sentiment follows you throughout with details like a tag stating “You Got This” on the 2 in 1 Nursing/Infant Carrier Cover and “Strong as a Mother” written on the reusable water bottle and grippy socks.  Plus, in a more subtle way the inclusion of a sentimental book (for when you want to disconnect), honey sticks (hospital approved for energy), and a massage ball (cramps can be no joke!) show that this bag is the ultimate gift to yourself or a momma-to-be you love. It completely prepares you for birth in a hospital or birth center.

Thank you to Baby Boldly for making this sponsored post possible.

23 Top Baby Registry Tips

by Christine Swearingen Leave a Comment

We polled our Gugu Village for their top baby registry tips! We share expert advice all the time, but this time we wanted you to hear it from mamas who have been there themselves. Check out their sage advice below.

  1. Don’t register for too many clothes. People like to pick out what they think is cute, and they grow out of them so fast! -Vanessa S.
  2. The checklists on most registries actually help BUT NO you don’t need everything in every category of the checklist. -Cayli M.
  3. Even if you don’t plan on having a baby shower. Make a registry (or few from a few different stores) and use the % off coupon they give you for unboughten registry items, which are items you would be buying any way and you save money. -Cayli M.
  4. Add items that you would rather not buy yourself. Ex: don’t add tons of books or clothing since you’re most likely going to buy those items yourself anyways. -Cayli M.
  5. Don’t bother putting baby towels/washcloths on it. They usually come in a gift pack and you will likely receive several!  -Abby M.
  6. Ask for diapers of size 3+ or cloth diapers as they go through the small sizes quick! -Abby M.
  7. Don’t add clothes. People will gift them to you regardless. And make sure you check stuff out and research for yourself. You may find that you aren’t a fan of something that others are huge fans of (ie: a certain stroller or car seat, diaper bags, etc). Also you do not need to spend big bucks on stuff. Baby isn’t going to know the difference if you have an Uppababy or a Graco stroller. Buy what you like and what fits your budget. -Samantha F.
  8. Don’t register for newborn or 0-3 mos. You don’t have any idea how big or small baby will be at birth and you’re almost guaranteed to get stuff you don’t need or want—my first needed preemie and my second was almost too large for NB when he came out. don’t register for size N or 1 diapers. Do 2+. People will send that stuff whether it’s on the registry or not. –Katie W.
  9. Don’t register for blankets. Crib & bassinet sheets, yes, blankets no. –Katie W.
  10. Do register for your preferred hygiene items, especially baby shampoo, powder, and other consumables you’ll use over and over. –Katie W.
  11. Put your big ticket items on the registry. If someone buys them it’s a lovely surprise; if they don’t, you get credit/discounts. -Katie W.
  12. Don’t add baby bottles. Get the free registry gift bags or swag bags from baby events you attend. They come with lots of baby bottles and pacis that you can save and try on baby once they are ready to bottle feed. You don’t know which bottle your baby takes so best to keep one of a couple different bottles. Once baby takes to one buy a pack of those bottles. -Edith G.
  13. Do ask family and friends for any hand me downs before registering. -Alison F.
  14. Do register for the better crib mattress and any crib conversion kits. -Alison F.
  15. Don’t register for 1 specific brand of diapers. Register for smaller boxes and a variety of them. You never know what will be best for your baby. -Alison F.
  16. Register for things you will need postpartum care take out gift cards , cleaning service , laundry etc. -Sheila S.
  17. Register for something YOU want for now or postpartum (massage, etc) not just what you NEED for baby. -Daron O.
  18. There are a million options for everything and there might need to be some trial and error for certain items. –Hilary B.
  19. Places like BuyBuyBaby and Bed Bath and Beyond are great for registry items because they have such good return policies in case you find you don’t end up wanting or using things you register for and there will always be something you need to use gift card or credit on. -Hilary B.
  20. Treat yourself to a glider. Not a rocker. I didn’t know the difference and I wish I had gotten the glider. -Lauren G.
  21. Diapers on top of diapers. Best gift ever. -Francesca R.
  22. Other moms mentioned it but register for things for YOU and your healing! That is what you will need immediately postpartum. Seriously the first few weeks the baby needs so little – a place to sleep, some clothes, swaddles, diapers, burp cloths, bottles if you’re bottle feeding and a paci. You, mama, need things to help your healing and that is too often overlooked when it comes to registering- welcoming a new baby means you had to birth said baby and your registry should reflect that! -Laura S.
  23. Gift cards! You usually need and want way different things once baby is here! -Michelle A.

These crib sheets from Rookie Humans take sleeping baby photo opportunities to the next level. Since the cute factor is printed on the sheet, they keep your baby safe without any added stuff in the crib. They come in a variety of prints, but this meadow print feels earthy and free.

Stamp My Feet – Black Herringbone – $38.00

You’ll want to take this gift with you when your little one is on the way. That way you can dip your newborn’s feet into the non-toxic ink pad and get those fresh footprints as soon as possible. The gender-neutral herringbone design would look great in your baby’s nursery or displayed proudly in your living room.

Rookie Humans Crib Sheet and Swaddle Bundle – Moon’s Birthday – $63.00

This is another crib sheet from Rookie Humans, but it comes bundled with a bamboo swaddling blanket in a coordinating pattern. The moon pattern is… out of this world.

by Jenna Hatfield Leave a Comment

For moms planning on returning to work after the birth of their baby, planning ahead when making your registry is vitally important. Beyond cute outfits for your bundle of joy, it’s important to have a variety of things on hand that will make your life easier when it’s time to transition back to work.

We’ve put together a list of items that everyone from expectant working moms to those actively preparing to head back to the office can use.

For Expectant Working Moms

Blisslets Sofia + Cecilia Nausea Relief Bracelets – $29.99

Accupressure bracelets for expectant working moms

You’ve heard of acupressure bracelets providing nausea relief for travel, right? That’s what these deliver–but with style! You’ll get relief from morning (or all day) sickness with these beautiful bracelets without any side effects. They’ll add a little extra something to any outfit you wear to work during pregnancy.

Belly Bandit Upsie Belly® Belly Wrap – $69.95

Belly band for support

As your baby grows, you might find yourself needing a little extra support throughout your work day. This belly support band works for working moms during their pregnancies, helping to support the extra weight whether sitting at a desk or walking around all day.

For Working Moms Who Pump

Nanobebe Milk Storage Bags & Organizer – $9.99

Flat breastmilk bags and organizer

Working moms have to stay organized in order to get everything done. We love how the flat nanobebe breastmilk bags fit in this organizer for your freezer. Put the oldest milk at the top and remove the guessing game from opening the freezer. We also have some pumping tips for working moms.

The Larken X – $48.00

The perfect nursing bra for working moms

This comfortable bra is the perfect selection for working moms who need to pump during the day. It’s wire free and comfortable, complete with hands free pumping in a snap-free, zipper-free, clip-free, patent-pending design. It’s a must-have, for sure!

For Work-At-Home Moms

DockATot Deluxe+ Dock – $195.99

Dockatot keeps baby close by

Keep your baby nearby with this adorable marble patterned Dockatot. Your baby will be safe at an arm’s reach while you’re on your next conference call. Then you can hang out and get some tummy time in between meetings. Additionally, if you’re working from home, you may want to check out some advice for working moms; it was written in 2020 and still applies today.

Babymoov Travelnest Portable Bassinet – $89.99

A bassinet for a home office

Then when it’s time for a nap, you can move your little sleeper over to the Babymoov bassinet. Instead of running them back to their nursery and risk waking them up, you can simply set them down right next to you. You’ll be able to keep working while they take a restful nap. It would fit in just right in the ultimate work-at-home mom office.

For All Working Moms

Belly Bandit MT Moto Leggings – $89.95

All working moms need black leggings!

Black leggings are a must. These moto leggings from Belly Bandit offer compression that keeps your postpartum belly firmly in place. The moto detailing will pair well with just about anything. However, they also have some solid black leggings without the moto effect, too.

Kibou Bag – $89.00

Minimalist diaper bag for working moms

It’s described as a “deliberately minimal diaper bag,” but it’s so much more than that. It may look small, but looks are deceiving. You can wear it in a variety of ways, including crossbody and as a fanny pack. It’s got hidden card slots and holds more than you might imagine. It even has a detachable changing pad that unfolds from the back flap.

These are just a few of the must-have baby registry items for working moms. What items did you have on your registry that have proven to be your favorite as you’ve returned to work?
