Feminine and Whimsical Nursery Reveal

by Christine Swearingen Leave a Comment

Today we are featuring a guest post from our favorite nursery e-design service, YouthfulNest!

YouthfulNest is a service that matches you with an expert nursery room designer for an entire custom room design. Their e-design service helps expecting parents find more ease and joy in nesting. Let a YouthfulNest Design BFF de-stress the process of designing a nursery. Taking the guesswork out of choosing the right products for your specific style and budget. All at an affordable price.

You can check out their services on our shop and sign up for your own specialized nursery design package.

Oh girl, here we go! This fresh, feminine nursery designed for a mom of three boys is so ready for her spotlight. It started with a blank canvas and bloomed into a whimsical space full of flirty fauna in pinks and greens.

We started following Megan Sullivan on Instagram a couple years ago. She was already following YouthfulNest and we appreciated her likes and comments on our work. When we learned she was pregnant with her fourth child, her first baby girl, we reached out to her and recommend our eDesign service.

THE GIFT OF TIME

Megan has her hands full with three young boys, is a real estate expert undergoing a huge home remodel, and is also the co-founder of The Local Moms Network. An organized community that strives to give moms the gifts of time in cities across the country, currently in 30 states. Let’s just say she had her hands full. It was our goal to give Megan the gift of time by helping her plan and design her nursery.

It was also all happening during the heart of a global pandemic due to the invasion of covid-19. Megan had worked with a traditional interior design in the past but this time needed a contactless option for the health and safety of her and her family. Our completely virtual series allowed just for that.

A FEW OF OUR FAVORITE THINGS

Megan was already thinking to purchase our services and landed on the Biggie eDesign package exclusively sold on the Gugu guru website. From there we paired her up with YouthfulNest Design BFF Jolene Fontaine.

Megan already had her eye on a particular wallpaper and the rest of the room sprouted up from its style and color. The Frida print in pink by Pepper Home captured Megan’s heart. And even though there were a couple moments spent considering another style this flirty print stayed on top.

THE THREE NURSERY ESSENTIALS

With the color and style direction set, the designer started pulling in the three essentials; glider, dresser and crib. A few of our favorite brands wanted to contribute to our design and gifted premium pieces to the nursery.

First, we have the Stokke Sleepi crib taking center stage in front of the wallpapered wall. With a Tiktak Design custom crib mobile dangling over this cozy sleep space.

Then we move over to mom’s haven for all things baby, the glider. The Compass Rocker was selected from Project Nursery. The curved body in a creamy plush upholstery is luxurious and supportive. We loved the touch of pink from the rose gold metal legs.

The other top spot any parent looks to be functional and stylish is the changing area. The Schooner dresser was found on Paynes Gray. This piece is a beautiful blend of retro and modern styling, featuring brass metal accents.

ABOVE AND BEYOND

With the three essential nursery spots nailed down, there was one more spot that was important for the family to incorporate in the room. With all the little brothers wanting to get in on welcoming their baby sister to the family we needed a spot for them and other guests to sit. This meant the need for additional seating. Originally we selected the Natural Daybed Boho from CB2. Then it was delivered damaged and a replacement was unavailable for weeks. We quickly sourced a few other styles and it was The Mid-Century Daybed from West Elm was ready to ship and fit the bill for both form and function. A clean line daybed lined with plush pillows from Paynes Gray and One Affirmation.

With all the main functionality covered let’s move on to some fun details! We can almost hear those adorable baby giggles as baby Scout is pushed by those big brothers in her macrame swing from Emma and Finn. When baby Scout is tired of play, it’s time for snuggling up with her new BFF, a plush Narwhal creature, and listening to his story, both from Slumberkins.

BEFORE & AFTER

ROUND OF APPLAUSE

We can’t take all the credit for this fabulous nursery room reveal. The fact is Megan and her install crew are ultimately responsible for taking their designers’ product and styling recommendations and installing it all themselves. As you can see they did an impeccable job.

Our best wishes to this lovely family and welcome to the world Scout Sullivan!

For a number of our other favorites, please check out our Explore page!

Giving Cradle

Giving Cradle: We love to highlight companies that give back. Giving Cradle’s biggest goal is that all mothers and newborns “have equal access to a healthy start.” They have launched a variety of products and donation opportunities, which help moms in South Asia with access to medical and care items for their newborns. Plus, they are about to launch their beautiful cradle, a safe cradle made of bamboo, breathable mesh, and removable washable fabric. Proceeds from every cradle purchase will benefit these moms and babies.

Unilove

Unilove 3 in 1 Feed Me Booster: A line of high quality products, we are super excited about Unilove’s Feed Me Booster. This multifunctional 3-in-1 booster can be used on a chair, the floor, or as an armchair. It can also be used with or without the tray!  The tray swivels and the seat folds flat for easy storage/travel. Also, the height is adjustable to help reach any table. Check them out today!

Regalo MyPlayMat

Regalo MyPlayMat: The MyPlayMat from Regalo will be your new lightweight and foldable best friend! Great for both indoors and outdoors, this playmat will give your little one ample space to move around for tummy time, early crawling, and beyond! While especially great for small spaces, this mat will find a place in any home. It is also super easy to clean and comes with two different patterns.

The Baby Dream Machine

The Baby Dream Machine: The Baby Dream Machine is an amazing 5 in 1 product, which serves as a night light, sound machine, cool-mist humidifier, aromatherapy, and red light therapy. All of these modes are designed to help your little one get full nights of peaceful sleep (which means you get peaceful nights of sleep, too!). Plus it is a super cute design and will fit into any nursery!

Novogratz

Novogratz Kids Collection: Late last year Novogratz launched their own Kids + Baby furniture line, perfect for high style budget-friendly parents! Their crib options are simplistic and beautiful. We are also going gaga over their bookcases, which add a huge design pop while adding storage for under $100!

Urban Style for the Suburban Mama

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Did you know that Gugu Guru was started because Monica Banks was living in New York City and realized that city mamas have different needs than suburban moms? Many young couples start their life in an urban environment and move out to the suburbs when they start a family – but how does this affect your personal mom style? Today’s post is by musician and model, Cassie Taylor; she is known for her mod-urban style, but as the mom of a 2 year old boy, she needs to make sure she can run around and keep up with her toddler as a suburban mama. Cassie is sharing her favorite ways to transition you and your kiddo’s style from super urban to suburban mama – all while still feeling hip and modern. You can find Cassie on her Instagram or Facebook.

Mom Life Must Haves’ Permanently Exhausted Shirt; Rowdy Sprout’s Nirvana Shirt

I was a size 10 before I got pregnant, and after I had my son, Woods I was a size 20. It was emotionally painful for me to get dressed every morning and my entire closet just hung there and made me feel pathetic. Rebuilding my life and wardrobe postpartum has been a struggle, but also a pleasure. I have found a new standard of beauty and embraced my curves, with a new easy styles that work for me as a mom, business woman, artist and wife.  I love Mom Life Must Have T-Shirts! The shirt is so soft and they are versatile. I can combine it with leggings and a jacket for a cool and easy look for a toddler play date or jazz it up with a leather skirt and rock it for a mompreneur outing. I love this tank, it pretty much sums up my existence. My son is an adorable happy toddler but a terrible sleeper, despite my husband’s and my efforts. I am in a constant state of exhaustion which is fueled by my love of caffeine. (Check out some gifts for coffee loving parents!)

suburban mama

Mom Life Must Haves’ Mom Life shirt

I have had the pleasure of living in Chicago, Denver and Memphis and spent months at a time traveling abroad in Europe with when music was my full time gig.  But when I met my husband we moved across the plains to the Missouri countryside. After our son was born we knew we needed to meet in the middle somewhere. He’s an avid outdoorsman who hunts, fishes and rock limbs on the weekends and I’m a gal who wants to dine out, shop and see live music. It was a compromise on both of our parts but in the end it’s been a wonderful place for the both of us and a safe place to grow up for our son.

suburban mama

When it comes to urban style for the suburban mama, it’s all about looking rad while staying comfortable. Old Navy is a staple for the suburban mama, with their Rockstar jeans that you can easily bend, stretch, run and jump in.

I love to have fun styling my little guy, which is why I turn to super comfortable children’s clothing with a modern twist! I’m a huge fan of Mitz Accessories; their clothing promotes education, creativity, and empowers kids to make their own decisions about what they wear. Blade and Rose has a huge assortment of funky leggings for both boys and girls. And, as a musician, I’m a personal fan of Rowdy Sprout, because, let’s face it – every little guy needs an assortment of rocker tees! And, really, what’s a toddler without a bow-tie? Exactly. Lillabarn is my go-to for rad bow-ties for my son.

Lillabarn Bow-Tie; Mitz Accessories Rainbow Shirt; Rowdy Sprout ACDC shirt

And, as any urban turned suburban mama knows, babywearing is the way to go! I’m a huge fan of Lillebaby – not only because they have the most awesome designs on their carriers, but because I can wear my son on the front or back. It’s ideal for weekend trips, errands, or just hanging out at home with a grumpy toddler.

Space-Saving Products for Parents of Twins: Gugu Guru Answers

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

A Gugu Guru registrant asks for help, and one of our registry consultants answers! When a mom of twins mentions on sign up, “I share a small room with my two babies and am interested in space-saving products for parents of twins” – our registry consultant, Abby, who is also a mom of twins, comes to the rescue. Here’s what she has to say:
I am so excited to send you this list of space-saving products for parents of twins that I think will *hopefully* help with some of your dilemmas. I even use some of these with my twins, so I can personally say they are ‘Twin-Mom Approved!’ I am sure you have solutions for sleeping and clothing storage so I tried to stay away from the basics.
Space-Saving Products for Parents of Twins: Diapering
Diaper Changing
  • The best solution for a small space diaper station is the Skip Hop Pronto Changing Station. With compartments for extra diapers, wipes, and diaper cream, this is a great go-to for floor changes.
  • My other recommendation is the Keekaroo Changing Pad, which makes diaper changes on top of counters/dressers/even on the floor completely possible! Bonus: the changer is slip resistant, meaning your little ones won’t be able to move it.
Space-Saving Products for Parents of Twins: ShelvingShelving and Displays
Wall Shelves can be a great way to display items in a fun (and out of the way) way.
  • The Babyletto Spruce Tree Bookcase can be used for books/toys/pictures/etc.
  • These Floating Shelves can work for both your items and things for the kids.
  • Lastly, these acrylic book shelves take up hardly any space and can be used in many areas of your house.
space-saving products for parents of twins : kitchen
For the Kitchen
The first item that popped immediately into my head is a compact highchair. Here are a few options you may like (at different price points).
  • Many twin moms prefer the Ikea Antilop high chair. At just $19.99 it is a steal. It is also easy to take apart for quick storage.
  • The Joovy Nook highchair is the one I currently use for my boys. I love that it folds completely flat for easy storage when it’s not meal time.
  • The Stokke Tripp Trapp is a favorite high chair of moms everywhere. It slides easily up to the table, or you can use purchase a separate tray. Also, I love this chair because it grows with your kiddos.
space-saving products for parents of twinsKids’ Activities
The hardest part of living in a small space is the amount of stuff the twins’ need for activity and stimulation. Finding small activity tables and toys that can be easily put away is a challenge, but possible! Also, utilize underneath bed/crib storage for items that aren’t being used.
  • Finn + Emma has a ton of play gyms that aren’t connected to a mat, which makes them easy to set down anywhere! They are adorable and easy to store when not in use.
  • My last suggestion is a little bit on the larger side, but it plays multiple roles! The Ruggish Play Rugs are great and stylish on one side, but turn into a play mat for the kiddos on the back. These are actually currently on my ‘To Buy’ list as my boys get a little bit bigger.

Nursery Essential: Ruggish Play Rugs

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

-Sponsored Post-

One of the questions we get asked daily is “what items are the best investment when it comes to nursery decor?” It’s a good question, because as we all know, diaper pails aren’t going to be needed forever, neither will mobiles, or even gliders, but one thing which a house always needs is somewhere safe, soft, and gorgeous to play, dream, and lay upon. Enter: Ruggish Play Rugs –  gorgeous play mats which are not only ideal for the nursery, but for your home decor.

You can find Ruggish on Facebook and Instagram.

Ruggish was founded by an interior designer and new mom who realized when it came to creating a safe, comfortable and beautiful, not to mention multipurpose space, for her new child, the options were slim. When it came to rugs, nothing was as cushioned as it should have been for hanging out on the floor, and the interlocking mats left lots of rooms for crumbs and dirt to fall through. As necessity is the mother of invention, Ruggish was born.

Ruggish is essentially a one-piece play mat  which offers the look of a rug and the feel of a play mat, allowing you to swap out your expensive rug for a long lasting, aesthetically pleasing, protective product that’s a fraction of the price. The rugs are 2-in-1, as one side is a stylish piece of art for your home, and the other side is a playmat for toddlers and kids.  A layer of memory foam provides more cushion than any foam tile, and an exceptionally comfortable place to play, and most importantly, they are durable and easy to wipe down. Many parents have also reported that Ruggish Play Rugs are ideal for doing yoga or even resting alongside their kids, without any aches or pains normally associated with playing on the floor!

Ruggish Play Rugs also make the list for eco-friendly living, as they are free of BPA, Phthalate, Lead, Latex, Formaldehyde and EVA, and tested to European Toy Standards. Plus, they feature a 1-year manufacturers warranty, and free shipping in the United States. Ruggish Play Rugs come in two designs, the Lulu and the Romy (we’ve featured the Romy in our gray nursery inspiration post). The back of each of the play rugs features a whimsical roadmap, pictured above.

As one of the reviews says, “We absolutely love our Romy play rug! As a family, laying and playing with our son Marcello on the play mat is our favorite part of the day. It’s incredibly comfortable, stylish, and multi-functional. Our son loves rolling, crawling and playing with his toys on the mat, I love stretching on it after the end of long day and my husband even naps on it! We love it so much we’ve ordered 3 of them for different rooms and are now considering another for our outdoor patio. This is an absolute must buy!”

Thank you to Ruggish for making this sponsored post possible.

Nursery Inspiration: Black & White Patterns

by Gugu Guru Leave a Comment

Black and White nurseries are super trendy right now, and for good reason – they’re gender neutral, so you can set them up long before baby comes and they transition really well to toddler/kid rooms. However, when you’re working with two strong contrasting colors such as black and white, you’re going to want to throw some patterns into the mix to make for a stylish room. We rounded up nursery essentials for your black & white pattern inspired nursery – plus, head to the bottom of the post for some inspiration help.

Want to see more nursery inspo posts? Check out Gray Nursery Ideas, Gender Neutral Nursery, Botanical Nursery; Buffalo Plaid Nursery Inspiration; Princess Bride Inspired Nursery; Red, White, and Blue Nurseries

Crane Drop Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier, black:  We have posted many times about why Crane Humidifiers are a nursery essential, so we had to include a plain black Crane Drop Humidifier black and white nursery. Humidifiers are especially important for Newborns because they are Obligate Nasal Breathers, breathing only through their tiny noses for their first 4 – 6 months. Any congestion can make breathing, feeding, and sleeping incredibly difficult for your little one. Why not grab this nursery essential in black to match your black and white nursery?

Black and White Swaddle Blankets: We love the variety of designs and patterns on these cotton swaddle blankets; plus, the velcro makes for an easy time swaddling baby.

Sea Team Foldable Mini Square Storage Containers: These eco-friendly and durable storage containers are ideal for your black and white nursery. They can hold everything from diapers to toys to clothes. We love the variety of patterns on them, they’re pretty enough to display on a shelf.

How You Can Use: See Hint Mama’s tips on using canvas storage containers for organizing baby clothes.

Black Cloud Changing Pad Cover: This cotton sateen changing pad covers adds black and white whimsy to a drab diaper changing station. Fabric is 100% cotton sateen, a weave that results in a bright satin-like appearance and feel, providing the optimal mix of durability, beauty, breathability, and ease of care; machine wash and dry.

Brooklyn Born Organic Knitted Blanket – Breton Stripe, Black/White: This handsome GOTS certified organic cotton adds sophistication to your black and white nursery. We’re big fans of the Breton Stripe; this blanket is mature enough to transition to a big kid room, as well.

Also seen: Red, white, and blue nursery

aden + anais silky soft swaddle 3 pack, midnight: These silky soft muslin swaddle blankets combines breathability and versatility with oh-so-soft rayon made from bamboo, making it the most luxurious fabric to use on your baby’s delicate skin. And, as if off-the-charts softness isn’t enough, the silky soft swaddle can also be used as a stroller cover, burp cloth, nursing cover and more. The black and white patterns add to the overall theme of the nursery, not to mention, they look great in photos.

Ubbi Steel Diaper Pail, Black Triangles: An Ubbi Diaper Pail is a must have for any nursery; with a modern look, you can add efficiency with an essential nursery item to your nursery decor and not break from the theme of the nursery’s style. The Ubbi Diaper Pail holds up to 55 diapers, and with its powder-coated steel interior, it keeps smells far, far away. We’re loving the ultra-modern look of the black and white triangles, perfect for a black and white patterned nursery!

IKEA black step stool: A step stool is an often overlooked nursery essential, but there are many times you may need to reach the top of the closet or shut off a smoke detector. Plus, this transitions really seamlessly into a big kid room.

Also seen:

Product Discovery: PhotoSquared App

by Gugu Guru 4 Comments

Gugu Guru’s editor-in-chief came across the PhotoSquared App and thought it would be the perfect addition to any nursery.

There are a few universal truths about having a new baby: you spend a lot of time sitting, you take a million photos, and you feel the need to redecorate the house. When I was home on maternity leave with my older son, I grew so tired of the house’s decor that I felt the need to change everything. However, new picture frames were expensive, and I didn’t want to hang a heavy frame over my son’s crib. Also, I was so excited about all the photos I was taking of my son on my iPhone, but didn’t have the time or energy to get anything printed. At the time, I thought, I wish there was a safe and quick way to display these photos in the nursery and around the house! Luckily, the PhotoSquared App is here to help!

PhotoSquared is so easy to use, you can order the stylish, 3-dimensional Photo Squares with one hand while you feed the baby with the other. They work within any space and make a wonderful gift; need a quick gift for grandma? Head to the app and order with one finger while you rock the baby to sleep. Download the PhotoSquared App, pick your photos, and they will be printed on gorgeous 8”x 8” half-inch thick photo boards. What I love most about the PhotoSquared squares are that they are lightweight, and hang with no nails required – and no damage to the walls. You can move them all around the house, and hang them safely over baby’s crib, too. They’re even water resistant, so you can hang them in the bathroom, and they are UV resistant, so you can safely hang by any window.

PhotoSquared makes it so easy to print your favorite memories on 8×8 photo squares with no need to shop around for frames or figure out how to hang. Looking for a gift? Your gift can be ordered effortlessly from a smartphone using the app available on the App store or Google Play. Super easy for you to order the perfect gift, super easy for them to cherish their precious moments. Click. Pick. Stick.

I knew I wanted to hang my Photo Squares above the baby’s crib, but since the boys share the bedroom, I wanted the squares to reflect special moments in both of their lives. I went with the 4 square option ($44, free shipping) and chose a photo of each boy, plus a photo of them together – and for my last photo, I picked a recent photo of my older son with my grandmother. PhotoSquared sent them so quickly that even though my grandmother recently passed away, I had a gorgeous photo of her to hang on the nursery wall – all I had to do was click a button! If you’re looking for a way to easily decorate the nursery (or any room in the house), I highly recommend PhotoSquared; it fulfills all the checkboxes in a new parent’s life: easy to use, baby photos, great gift for grandma – and, if you put it up totally crooked because you exist on 2 hours of sleep a night, you can easily take it down and start again. Win-win!

Thank you to PhotoSquared for making this sponsored post possible.
