The Toddler Dilemma: Potty Seat or Potty Chair?

by Jenna Hatfield Leave a Comment

When it’s time to start potty training, the options can feel endless. Do you go with a toilet seat or a potty chair? If you choose one over the other, which brand do you choose? And which ones work best? It can feel overwhelming before you even get to the task of actually helping your toddler learn to use the bathroom.

Never fear! We’ve looked at the options and come up with some pros and cons as well as some suggestions for each type.

Toilet Seats for Toddlers

Using a toilet seat, sometimes referred to as a trainer ring, provides a number of pros. First and foremost, you’re teaching your toilet trainer not to fear the big toilet. As they will start using it from the get-go, they’ll always associate it with safety. This means that there’s less fear when you’re out and about and need to use a public restroom. Additionally, a toilet seat–especially the ones that fold–provide an extra convenience factor. Your trainer will be able to go in any bathroom.

Cons include some of what you’d expect with any toilet training: As they don’t always fit every toilet, there can be messes involved. Additionally, if you do have a child who shows fear of the bigger potty, they may still show hesitancy even if this is the route you choose.

Delta Children Little Jon-EE Adjustable Potty Seat and Step Stool – $34.99

Adjustable potty seat

This toilet seat features a wide array of benefits. The adjustable height feature will grow with your toddler. The splash guard is a must-have as well. You can also use the step stool at the sink to help your little one learn how to wash their hands after using the toilet. It really is the perfect addition to your home bathroom.

Jool Folding Travel Potty Seat – $14.99

Folding potty seat

For potty training on the go, we love the Jool folding potty seat. The suction cups on the under side help keep it attached to any toilet. It will help keep it from slipping and keep your little one secure as they go. This toilet seat folds up easily and even comes with a travel bag for easy transport. If you’re potty training and traveling, you really need to have this on hand.

Potty Chairs for Toddlers

Potty chairs are miniature versions of the real thing. You can plop them down in your bathroom, or–one of their biggest pros–just about anywhere. That’s right: You can set the potty chair in your home office, their playroom, or take it on the go with you to the park.

Cons include a little more mess than a toilet seat in that you have to dump the contents of the enclosed bowl and clean it out. Some kids might also find it difficult to transition to a bigger toilet after getting used to the smaller version.

The First Years Super Pooper Plus Potty Seat – $39.99

Winning potty chair

This potty chair was the winner in the feeding Feeding/Bathing/Changing category of the JPMA Innovation Awards last year. Why? It encourages your toilet trainer to sit in the proper position for going, complete with a foot lift. It looks like a miniature toilet as well to encourage familiarity with the real deal.

BabyBjörn Smart Potty – $24.99

Most portable potty chair

The BabyBjörn Smart Potty is a very simple potty chair. It’s easy to clean, but the best selling factor is how easy it is to take along with you wherever you’re headed. Set it out on the deck for evening playtime to ensure your toddler can make it to the potty in time. Toss it in the back of the van for your upcoming trip. Just bring along some bleach wipes and you’re good to go!

The Best of Both Worlds

Instead of buying both a potty chair and a toilet seat, why not get both at the same time?

Munchkin Arm & Hammer Multi-Stage 3-in-1 Potty – $31.49

All-in-one potty chair and toilet seat option

Not sure if you want to invest in a toilet seat or a potty chair? Why not both? This option gives you a trainer ring to use with your toilet or ones in public restrooms, a potty chair for home use, and a step stool to encourage that hand washing with ease. You can cover all of your bases with one purchase.

My Size® Potty Lights and Songs Transitions – $44.99

Another all-in-one option, the Lights & Sounds Transitions is a potty chair with a potty seat that can move over to your toilet. Additionally, kiddos will love the six different songs it plays each time you “flush” the potty chair. It makes potty training feel fun and rewarding. (You can read more about this potty chair on our site.)

No matter what you choose, your little one will benefit from the research you’re putting into helping them make this next life transition. It will take some patience, but you’ll both get there!

Teaching Littles About Diversity

by Jenna Hatfield Leave a Comment

While we live in a very diverse world, teaching our children about diversity can feel daunting. How do you even begin to explain differences in skin, race, ability, family, and more? And should you? (Spoiler alert: You should!) Our differences are what make us human. By exposing your child to diversity — both in concept and in person — you will be raising children who embrace those differences rather than turn away from them in their adult life.

Read Diverse Books

The easiest way to expose your child to diversity is through books. This is especially handy if you live in an area that lacks in overall diversity. By reading a wide and varied library to your toddler, you can show them that people and families may look different but are all valued. Be sure to include books that feature children who don’t look like your child as the main character.

Some great suggestions include:

  1. Everywhere Babies by Susan Meyers — not only does this book depict a wide range of diverse people, it also includes a variety of ways to become a family, including adoption, single parents, LGBT families, and even grandparents raising children.
  2. Kindness Makes Us Strong by Sophie Beer — The colorful illustrations and simple message of this book make it a great early pick for introducing the concepts of diversity and kindness.
  3. All Kids Are Good Kids by Judy Carey Nevin — This book reinforces the concept that while we may all be different, we’re all good.
  4. Girls Like Me by Valerie Thompkins — Not only does this book center a diverse main character, but the message of the book introduces our youngest readers to a variety of careers they can choose. It’s a great conversation starter in many regards. This book has paper pages.
Diverse Books for Toddlers

Encourage Curiosity and Critical Thinking

Children notice differences in people. Toddlers especially haven’t yet been conditioned to filter their thoughts, observations, or questions in public. They may ask questions that make you feel uncomfortable. Examples include questions about skin color, disabilities, or family makeup. Instead of shushing your curious toddler and making them feel like the subject is taboo, encourage curiosity by responding positively. Follow up with questions to continue the conversation.

As an example, your child might ask why someone is in a wheelchair. Follow up with a question about how your toddler moves through the room. Ask them what they think a wheelchair might help that individual accomplish. Point out your eyeglasses and ask if they can think of anything else that might help someone through their day. Asking more questions and connecting topics to ones they might already understand expands their critical thinking skills. Allow for recognition and discussion of differences without making it feel like your child is wrong for wanting to know more. Becoming comfortable yourself talking about these topics will help your child become more comfortable as well.

Embody Kindness

Your toddler will soak up not just every word you say but every action you do. If you tell your child that people with differences are just as good as we are, but you speak or act unkindly toward someone who appears differently, they’ll recognize the dissonance even at a young age. Practicing kindness at the grocery store, daycare drop-off line, and at playgroup will encourage your child to do the same.

Expose Them to Diversity

Again, if you live in an area where diversity is lacking, the onus will be on you to step out of your comfort zone. Do you live within driving distance of an area that does offer a more diverse population? Can you go there every so often to shop, eat lunch, or play at a different playground? Additionally, can you attend a library class there? Or even mommy and me music class in that location rather than in your hometown? Exposure to the arts via age-appropriate live theater and dance is another way to welcome diverse people into your life. But it starts with you actively seeking out ways to incorporate diversity into your lives.

On the Go Gear for Eco-friendly Families

by Abby Ludwig Leave a Comment

Your life is busy and full of complicated stuff. Your baby gear should be simple. It should be easy. Most importantly, it should be something you love to use. When we come across excellent products, we need to ‘shout it from the rooftop!’ Bumbleride strollers are our go-to recommendation when working with eco-friendly families. Born in San Diego, Bumbleride’s stroller line can do it all. They are all-terrain strollers, not too heavy, and designed for all of life’s adventures.

While all of this is great, our favorite part about the brand is their dedication to the materials. They put great pride in using recycled materials and production processes that will create the safest strollers for your littles. Pair with some of our other top Eco-Friendly (and Affordable) finds and you’ve got all your basics covered.

Want to learn more? Read about their materials here and their manufacturing processes here. Cheers to Bumbleride for focusing on sustainability!

Bumbleride Era

One of our top recommended strollers at Gugu Guru, Era changed the game for eco-friendly families. With its reversible seat, quick compact fold, and small footprint, this is the perfect stroller choice for city, suburbs, or country! The stroller is newborn compatible (on it’s deepest recline or with a car seat adapter) and has excellent storage. Plus it’s air-filled tires (and included air pump) will help push through anything. This stroller is truly one of a kind!

Don’t take our word for it!

See what Brittany Littleton (Mom of 3 & Vegan Restauranteur) had to say:
“Over the past few years, sustainability has become trendy. This would be great, except that so much of what is marketed as “eco-friendly” isn’t at all. Especially in the baby market, there is SO MUCH PLASTIC WASTE. If you want something high end AND kind to the planet? Forget about it. Until @bumbleride — they have a true mission of sustainability with documented proof. They are constantly seeking to improve and being transparent about their operations. The fact that this fabric is made fully from recycled plastic water bottles makes my heart happy. I have hope we can create a beautiful future for our little ones.”

Bumbleride Indie

This do it all single stroller is a great choice for families who like to constantly be on the move. Great for unpaved trails, sidewalks, grass, and more, the Indie can push over anything. Its all-wheel suspension, air-filled tires will give you an excellent push and it will hold your little one up to 55 lbs. This stroller can take a car seat and reclines flat enough to be newborn compatible, making it a perfect option from day 1. Great for a day at the beach or a walk to the park!

Eco-friendly Family with multiples? Looking for a great double option for your toddler + baby? Check out the Indie Twin, which offers all of the same great features noted above, but with two seats! And for those twin moms? Yes! It will take 2 car seats!

Bumbleride Speed

Active and eco-minded? Bumbleride has you covered! Their Speed stroller can run, walk, and jog with you through every errand and activity. One of the lightest-weight jogging strollers on the market, the Speed will double as your everyday stroller. With it’s large wheels and huge canopy, this stroller is the perfect choice for your little ones up to 65 lbs. Just make sure not to run with your little one until cleared by your pediatrician and Bumbleride will take care of the rest.

Looking for more active must-haves? Check out some of our favorite Gear for Active Families.

No matter what your day’s activities look like, Bumbleride has a stroller to meet your needs. Thank you so much to Bumbleride for making this sponsored post happen and for creating excellent products to help take care of our babies and our planet.

Sippy Cups vs Straw Cups vs 360 Cups

by Jenna Hatfield Leave a Comment

When it comes to sippy cups, the options can feel overwhelming. On top of different types of lids and styles as well as recommendations, the truth is that your child will end up having a preference when it comes to lid, shape, and style. Finding the one that fits your lifestyle while also appeasing your toddler’s tastes can take a little bit of trial and error. We’ve rounded up a variety of sippy cups in the traditional, straw, and 360 cup categories to help you get started with your toddler’s collection.

Traditional Sippy Cups

When you think about cups, your first thought may fall on the traditional sippy cup like the ones in this category. A lot of younger babies prefer to start with this type of lid when learning to drink from a cup. While the other two categories may provide your child with a few more dental and developmental benefits, the truth is your toddler will definitely prefer one type of cup over another. We found two great options for those who prefer this type of sippy cup.

Re-Play Sippy Cups

Why will you love these sippy cups? Let us count the ways: 1. They’re made in the USA! 2. They’re made from recycled milk jugs. 3. They’re BPA-free. 4. They’re leakproof. We know. They all say that, but this review really has us sold on the leakproof-ness of these particular cups. 5. They come in a lot of fun colors.

Thermos Foogoo Hard Spout Sippy Cup

This stainless steel sippy cup offers you more bang for your buck. You can use the cup with their three transitional lids. Start with the lid that features the traditional spout as well as handles. Then move on to the one without handles. Then when your toddler is ready, move on to the one with the straw. It will also save you time and money if you have two kids who prefer different types of sippy cup lids.

Straw Sippy Cups

Straw sippy cups are a great option for a variety of reasons. They help build lip, cheek, and tongue strength. They also help get your child used to straws for when they’re out and about and you happen to leave a cup at home. It’s a great transitional cup between traditional sippy cups and a regular drinking cup. We found some more great options for your toddler.

Green Sprouts Sip and Straw Cup

Our eco-conscious parents will love this cup as it’s made from glass. The liquids will only touch glass or the silicone straw. It’s BPA-free as well as free of various chemicals you want to keep away from your precious little one. It features a drip-free spout. Additionally, this particular cup comes with a variety of spouts to grow with your baby, including a traditional sippy, a straw spout, and a traditional straw. Cups that grow with your baby are definitely handy.

Nuk Everlast Weighted Straw Cup

How many times have you seen a toddler take a straw cup and tip it up as if it were a regular cup, only to find out they can’t get anything to drink that way? This straw sippy cup solves that problem. The weighted straw floats with the liquid inside the cup to make sure your toddler can drink from any angle. It’s basically (scientific) magic!

360 Cups

A 360 cup looks like a regular cup. Additionally, it will help your growing toddler learn to drink from a regular cup. They can drink from any angle through a valve all the way around the rim of the cup. Of course, because it’s valved like this, it helps prevent spills while your child is still learning how to drink and manage a cup. You’ll save yourself from some unnecessary clean ups by transitioning to this type of cup before going full force into the regular cup world!

Munchkin Miracle 360 Sippy Cup

We love that it’s BPA-free. You’ll love how it keeps spills from happening since the valve seals when your child stops drinking. Your toddler will love drinking like the big kids. Additionally, it’s easy to clean with no extra valves or parts. Easy to clean feels important when you’re busy chasing a toddler around the house.

Dr. Brown’s Cheers 360 Spoutless Transition Sippy Cup

This version of the 360 cup is translucent so you can see when it’s time for a refill. Like the Munchkin cup, it’s BPA free so you can feel good about your choice. Like the others, it offers leak-free learning, making life feel a little bit easier for you.

What are your favorite sippy cups? More importantly, which sippy cup does your toddler prefer?

Snuggle Up in the Snow: Winter Baby and Toddler Must-Haves

by Jenna Hatfield Leave a Comment

As you enter into your second, third, or even fourth winter with your older baby or toddler, you might need to add some items to your household. You’ve already collected and used the ones we’ve suggested on our winter newborn list. Now your active little one needs more things to round out their cold-weather experience.

Looking for our best winter gear for your baby? Check out our must-haves here.

Winter Sleepwear

ergoPouch Jersey Sleeping Bag 3.5 TOG

For your older babies who are still loving the sleep sack style, this ergoPouch sleeping bag is a great option. It’s rated 3.5 TOG, which is good for temps down to 57 degrees. Your little sleeper will stay warm and cozy all winter long.

ergoPouch Sleep Onesie 2.5 TOG

And for the walkers, grab this sleep onesie, which has a 2.5 TOG rating. It’s good for temperatures down to 63 degrees. Your toddler can run circles around you and stay warm at the same time.

Snow Wear

Baby ColdControl Max Puffer One Piece

If you live in a colder climate with snow potential, you’re going to want some snow gear. This one-piece snow suit from Gap offers a simple gender-neutral option. We also like offerings from L.L. Bean and Land’s End for some more colorful picks.

Buffalo Check Sherpa Hat

Your little snow bear is going to need a hat, and this one from Carter’s stole our hearts. Buffalo check and ear flaps? Yes, please.

Cozie Fleece Mitten

When it comes to gloves, this set has the trick we love. You fish the string through both sleeves and, voila! Your toddler can’t lose their gloves in the snow. Or in the car. Or while getting their coat on at daycare. You get the point. You’ll spend less time looking for missing gloves. That’s a definite win.

Toddler Denver Winter Boots

Keep their toes warm with these cute snow boots from Cat + Jack. There are a variety of color options to pair with whatever snowsuit you choose. The velcro closure makes them easy on and off, a must-have for trying to get toddlers dressed for snow time. (You’ll be in a race to get them dressed, yourself dressed, and everyone out the door before you or your child overheat!)

Outdoor Travel

Larktale Chit Chat Stroller, Rain Cover, and Foot Muff

Start with the Larktale Chit Chat, a great stroller for all of your adventures. Then, as the winter season arrives, add the Rain Cover so you can still get out for a walk even on the not-so-perfect days. Lastly, for cold days, add in the foot muff to keep your baby’s tootsies nice and toasty.

See what some of our moms had to say about the Larktale Chit Chat here.

Sherpa-Lined 3-in-1 Maternity Hoodie

Pair this jacket with your favorite baby carrier, and you’ll both stay warm and toasty. It features a zip-in panel to fit over any carrier or sling. Throw this on and head out for a winter hike you’ll remember for the rest of your life. Looking for a great carrier? Check out our Baby Carrier Quiz to narrow down your choices.

Kids’ Pull Sled and Cushion Set

Not wanting to go for a stroll or a babywearing hike? How about pulling this adorable sled through the snow? Or even the double version of it? Or perhaps you want to push a sled? Whatever the case, these sleds are heirloom quality and can be handed down for generations to come. (Plus, how cute are they? Goodness!)

Winter Health & Wellness

Earth Mama Organics Baby Face Nose & Cheek Balm

If you spend as much time playing outside as your toddler wants to, they might end up with some chapped cheeks. Rub some of the Face, Nose & Cheek Balm from Earth Mama on them to help soothe and moisturize. It’s certified organic and free from stuff you don’t want on your baby’s sensitive skin!

These things will add some joy to the winter season as you make memories with your little one.

Gamechanger for Bathtime: Moms Love Bubbsi

by Abby Ludwig Leave a Comment

Looking for a bath routine to top all others? We had five moms test out Bubbsi’s Newborn Starter Set with their little ones. Bubbsi is revolutionizing the bath game. Utilizing coconut oil, they have created a line of bath products safe for newborns battling a variety of skin concerns. Eczema, Diaper Rash, and Cradle Cap be warned, you are receiving your eviction notice! Keep your little one’s skin nourished this winter with Bubbsi.

Abby, 4 year old twins, 17 month old twins, Chicago IL

Having 4 kids with sensitive skin, I am always on the hunt for new skincare lines. Generally, we look for things that are fragrance-free (and sesame-free, thanks to allergies!), tear-free, and easy-to-follow. Some of the skincare lines I’ve tried with my kids have had up to 8 steps, making them nearly impossible to complete daily. Our pediatric dermatologist has always spoken about the benefits of coconut oil, but when I tried putting this on my kids directly, we all ended up greasy and miserable. Enter Bubbsi! The answer to our daily struggles! First off, the bottles are adorable! Quite honestly, they became a nice distraction for my babies during bathtime. Next, they are refillable. No more spending $$$ on new bottles every time you need a replacement, and with 4 kids, it’s often! Lastly, they work! My kids’ skin was nourished, moisturized, and the steps were easy enough for my 4-year-olds to follow without any help. I will definitely be recommending this to my friends!

Anya, 1 year old + 3 year old, Rhode Island

I was so excited to try Bubbsi. I’m always looking for all natural products for my girls. They have super sensitive skin and sometimes get eczema from food allergies and colder weather. I love the fact that Bubbsi is almost fully naturally derived and I don’t worry about putting that on their skin. Both my girls have full heads of hair and I have been looking to try a shampoo and conditioner. The shampoo really cleans well but left their hair a bit dry so you definitely need to use the conditioner with it. The conditioner left their hair super silky with no knots and made it easy to brush out. As for the cream I was shocked. My younger daughter has little spots of keratosis on her arms and they almost went completely away after only one use and the diaper cream left her super smooth and protected. So excited to find Bubbsi and will continue to purchase in the future!

Katherine, 5 year old + 10 month old, North Carolina

I was given the Bubbsi head-to-toe set to try. First off, the packaging was super cute. I love that the packing peanuts dissolve in water! What a great way to help the environment. The products all smell wonderful. It’s a light scent, so it isn’t overpowering at all. My son and I both love the squishy feel of the bottles. The shampoo/body wash, lotion, and balm are soothing to both mine and my baby’s sensitive skin. We also appreciate that it is peanut and tree nut allergy friendly!

Overall, I give it a 5 out of 5! We will definitely be Bubbsi customers for a long time!

Erica, 2 1/2 year old + 9 month old, San Diego CA

I received the Bubbsi product via Gugu Guru and was so excited to try it out. Upon opening the box the smell was wonderful. I tried the body wash and lotion with both of my boys, age 9 months and 2 ½ .

Packaging: Absolutely love the packaging, design, and colors. Both of my boys immediately took to playing with the packaging. With that, I also had to make sure they didn’t have anything without supervision ☺

Feedback: The biggest thing I noticed was due to the consistency of the product and because it is cream-based, the water in the bath got murky. It’s inevitable that my kids put bathwater in their mouths, but this time I was careful to make sure they didn’t. I ended the bath a bit early so I could drain the tub.

Although I LOVED the packaging, smell, and overall look I wasn’t a fan of the creaminess and the residue it left in the tub. The lotion was great, but I found the small was just a bit too much for my kids and I used it on myself.

Thank you to Bubbsi for letting our moms test their products!

The Scoop: Aden + Anais Weighted Blanket

by Christine Swearingen Leave a Comment

Did you know that they make weighted blankets for babies and toddlers? They do! And when it comes to helping your little one get the best possible sleep, many parents find themselves willing to try different methods or employ new techniques. Enter Aden + Anais with their stylish weighted blanket options.

If you’re unfamiliar with the concept of weighted blankets, they are proven in clinical studies to both help alleviate stress and help promote longer, deeper sleep. They can promote happiness and reduce stress by releasing those happy-making hormones while simultaneously reducing the ones that cause stress. It makes sense that while a weighted blanket will help an adult sleep, it can do the same for the littlest among us. Just note that sleep experts do not recommend weighted blankets for babies under 20 lbs.

Aden + Anais created the embrace collection to help babies get their best possible sleep. They combine unique weight placement with 100% natural cotton, allowing you to use the weighted blanket all year long. Additionally, they make three different weights and sizes to accommodate babies of different ages and stages. Let’s take a look at what they have to offer.

On-the-Go Blanket

$59.95
Weight: 2 pounds
Recommended Baby Weight: 20+ pounds

This is the smallest of the weighted blankets from Aden + Anais, fitting easily into strollers to keep baby both calm and warm on your morning or evening walks. This blanket is for babies who weigh 20 pounds or more, meeting the weighted blanket guidelines of no more than 10% of the baby’s body weight. It comes in two neutral, modern prints that will look great tucked into your favorite stroller. A safety note: Babies should never sleep with a blanket. Keep this handy for your stroller rides and other outings.

Toddler Bed Weighted Blanket

$99.95
Weight: 2.65 pounds
Recommended Toddler Weight: 26.5 pounds

The next size up fits your toddler’s bed just perfectly. This weighted blanket will help your growing little one adjust to their new bed, soothing their anxieties and helping them drift off to dream with ease. Using this blanket as part of your sleep routine could make bedtime easier for your whole family. It’s made for toddlers who weigh 26.5 pounds or more. This blanket comes in three prints with colors that feel perfect for a growing toddler who wants to have a say.

Lounge Blanket

$119.95
Weight: 4.4 pounds
Recommended Toddler Weight: 44 pounds

Sure to become a favorite for the whole family, the lounge blanket is the largest option from Aden + Anais and feels perfect for snuggling together. You can throw it on your own bed for a joint naptime or cuddle under it for family naptime. It weighs in at 4.4 pounds, which means you could also use it as a solo option for kiddos who weigh 44 pounds or more. This weighted blanket comes in one classy, neutral print to complement your decor.

If you’re looking for an easy way to help your baby with sleep, starting with an Aden + Anais embrace collection weighted blanket seems like the perfect choice. You’ll be offering them a gentle hug when you can’t be there to hold them, calming their anxieties with ease.
